Great english professor! You'll learn what it takes to become a better writer. Thank you Nils!
Excellent teacher. His class is fun to go to because he has a lot of group activites
nils is a great teacher. he works with you whenever you need it and his class is so much fun to be in. i can't help loving the guy.
wasnt very clear or helpful and not easy my any means
great teacher
Great teacher. Alot of work, but is an overall fun class. He wants you to be a great writer.
His lectures are really interesting and he is a nice teacher. He makes a two hour class fly by. He gives a lot of homework and essays. He's a tough grader on your essays and it requires a great deal of effort to get an A.
Great teacher: interesting, helpful, concerned, not easy. You'll learn to write well.
Nils is an amazing teacher. I took the summer class which condensed everything so it was difficult, but for a normal semester it will be good. He's very helpful and constructive; he gives you the opportunity to re-write your essays for a better grade
Very unclear about assignments and papers not helpful at all.
Awesome teacher! By far the best english teacher ever. Makes you think and turns you into a better writer. Thanks Nils
He was not a good teacher. He grades papers based on his mood. I did well in most everything in the class and he gave me a D. Not a good teacher at all!
Nils is awesome. I would definitely take another class with Nils.
His teaching style is second to none. Very easy going - I can't speak for his grading scale, but I thoroughly enjoyed his class. He knows his stuff, and makes English more interesting than it reallly is by using his personality. Definately recommend him if you want an interesting class. :)
man i was scared going into this class but nils made it so much fun. it was a chalenging class i'll have to admit, some advice: Do your journals, its worth 20% of your grade. I got an A in the class because of the journals. Also if he offers rewrites DO THEM!!
Nils is the best, he helps you out with everything. You will leave his class a much better writer than before you entered it. He is very random when he selects his paper topics and his reading assignments so it will change each semester. Great Teacher!!!!
Great teacher.
He is very helpful and makes assignments very clear. He makes class go by fast with his humor and interesting discussions. If you complete your journal assignments and do your own part (which isn't difficult) you should have no problem receiving an A in the class.
Good sense of Humor and even tempered. He has interest in the subject and it shows, but if you want an easy grade, your not likely to find it here, unless english is an easy subject for you. Tries to scare away potential students at beginning of class with his long, long list of his pet peeves.
I wasnt happy with how he handeled things. I felt he was very insensitive and a person who had favorites in his class. I worked hard on my work and he never had anything good to say.
At first he seems nice.I did all the work and my attendence was perfect. For the final I did pertty bad. He told me to rewrite it and he would give me a higher grade. He didn't he still gave me a D.Don't take him. Lots of assignments, grades hard.
Team tought class, and he's the fun one of the three. On first day of class, brought in HUGE collection of his kids' toys to illustrate how they use them differently than the directions say to, and how they utilize creativity. I enjoy him!
Nils is the coolest! I've taken his class twice and would take him again. He picks wonderful material and has such a great personality in class. He is also really sensitive to people's personal opinions. REWRITE all the papers! I got a B in 1A because I didn't rewrite. He is a lot of work, but fun!
I have always loved English until I hit high school and was scarred by horrid people who thought they could teach. He's a bit intimidating, but I loved his class discussions and essays. I would have to recommend him because he made me love English again. One of my favorite teachers at MP College.
Great teacher! The class was plain fun to go to. Nils is very happy to help you with your papers. I didn't do some of the journals, and didn't do 1 paper but I still got an B. Take Nils you will not regret it.
BEST TEACHER EVER. i took this class fearing MO1B it was easier than M01A very insightful extremely helpful hilarious i was stoned everday for english and i still got an A do ur work and ull have a great time. liked the teacher so much i took humanites cause i found out he was teachin it. if its an option take him.
Very funny and cool. Try hard and turn in your assignments and there should be no problems!
I hate english but he made it fun
If you work hard and rewrite your assignments you should do fine. He picks great literature to cover, and it was a true pleasure to attend class.
Awsome professor. Actually cares about his students
Extremely interesting and makes listening easy.
the class was pretty easy and Nils still manages to make the class exciting. He's hilarious too which also helps. A must take for all people who need to take english credits.
best teacher at mp along with daurio! he's extremely funny and nice making english enjoyable for once. if you don't do well on your papers, he lets you re-write them for a better grade. honestly, it's impossible not to get an A if you re-write. he is always willing to read your papers and give you tips before you turn them in. fabulous teacher
Prof. Slattum is awesome. My writing improved tremendously with his guidance. He and Dr. Daurio are two exceptionally talented professors.
Nils is an awesome teacher. Once you get the hang of how to do the papers, it's relatively easy. He grades fairly.
Great teacher! He's really funny and gets the whole class involved. We had to write 3 papers, which were easy, and a final paper. Take him!
Definitely challenges you in your writing. I wished he were a little more consistent in his challenges, and also that he followed up on a challenge once it was attempted. Hope that made sense. Fair grades, and not too hard once you get the hang of what he's looking for. Fun and involving lectures; he's very knowledgeable. Sexiest pants ever.
Totally Love him. Very understanding, if you get lost or want a better grade, just ask and he'll clarify what he wants out of your writing. Very funny and helps lighten the whole mood of the class. He's great every teacher should be as cool as Nils!
one of the best teachers at moorpark. makes the class interesting and involves everyone. def should take him
Great teacher!!
Nils is a great teacher! He's interesting, funny, personable, helpful. Everyone should take a class with him while at Moorpark College!
I've never had a better teacher
He does have you write 4 main papers. You read a lot. Including two outside books. But he is a great teacher. Very funny. Classes can get boring sometimes, but if you like participating in class, you'll love it.
nils is the man take him, their is a marginal amount of work but he explains cleary how he wants the papers written. he alows rewrites which helps a lot. I got a b but if i didnt slack off at the end i would of got an a
Don't doubt it, TAKE NILS!
A friendly, interesting and intelligent man - Nils is by far the MVP of Moorpark College. Any actions necessary should be executed to take one of his classes (quit work, quit the other four classes you already signed up for, tell your significant other you don't love him/her anymore, etc). If you do not take Nils' classes, you don't have a soul.
By far the best english teacher i've ever had. made me have a passion for reading! class was very entertaining and he relates to students well. alot of work, but he makes it worth it as well as makes you want to do it.
Nils is one of the best English Teachers at Moorpark College. He is Clear on the subject matter and does a wonderful job teaching students how to critical think. The class wasnt easy but it was fun. I ended up with an A when I thought I was at a B. Does Xtra Credit once in a while. you write 3 papers, 1 research and an essay for the final. Nils RoX
I found his lectures to be both shallow and pedantic! Unreasonably hard grader on essays. He's nice, but that won't help your GPA. FYI, he made us do an impromptu, group presentation in front of the class with only about 10 mins. to prepare. I suggest Morinini, Baker, or Rayl if you want great English teachers. Took him b/c of RMP, big mistake.
NILS IS THE MAN...NUFF SAID
Very good class...enjoyable and mostly easy. Three essays that aren't too difficult. I could not have asked for a better english teacher. Take him!
Nils is a bit disorganized. I think I'm going to give him a free binder to keep students' essays, like a gift for being an awesome teacher. Other than that, he's very knowledgeable , and knows way more than he let on (talk to him out of class and you'll see what I mean). He has a bit of that surfer/"chilling" attitude, and very easy on students.
I thought this class SUCKED. You have to read a bunch of boring/useless stories that mean nothing to you and you have to write papers on them. I thought he gave way too much work, and he's also a shady grader. This class ruined my 4.0 G.P.A. :( I highly recommend someone else unless you like a bunch of stupid work.
Slattum is an awesome teacher!!! you have 2 presentations but they are not even more than 5 mins! EASY A only 3 essays and only 1 in class essay which is the final! VERY EASY! People who didnt like him were lazy
I took Nills for m02 also and he was still the best. He helped me a lot and went over my papers and help me understand the subject. He's just a a great person. I highlt recommend him:]
Although not an easy ride at the end of the day you walk away feeling you were enriched for the experience!
slattum is an awesome guy but his class is extremely challenging. if you want to read and write every night for homework and write 4 difficult essays this is your guy. I would much rather go to lunch with Slattum and enjoy his company then take his class.. i got an A in M01A and struggled a lot in his M01B.
Nils is super easy going but at the same time his class is not a joke. Perfect mix. HW and essays(do the rewrites)are reasonable. Class is a big discussion, and he makes you look at things from different angles. Give yourself more than a week to do the final research paper, that thing owned me. Would not have been able to write it before the class.
I really enjoyed taking Slattum's class. He makes you work (3-4 essays w/rewrites, reading, and a journal) but he explains everything really well and the class discussions are interesting. Definitely recommend this teacher.
Great Professor, makes you want to go to class, a couple of papers that can be difficult, but he is extremely helpful, and lets you rewrite them, class discussions are always interesting, difficult, but rewarding.
I took him a couple of years ago. I really disliked english but he made this class very interesting. He picks great readings. Makes you really appreciate english class. He's very funny too! I got an A in this class. you must do the work, but totally worth it.
Mr. Slattum is such a good teacher. I took him for Humanities, and he is very respectful and honest. You can tell he is passionate about the subjects and has integrity. As long as you are giving your best you will get an A, because he can tell in the individual. A+ Teacher. If I could I would take him for all my classes. And hes a cutie patootie!
He's a cool guy and his class will certainly challenge and enlighten you... but it's hard work, and it can get painfully BORING if you don't participate in the discussions... so if you're introverted or lazy, stay away hahaha
Prof Slattum is a great professor. I hated english!!! he talks about real, interesting subjects. I was actually disappointed when the class was cancelled for the day. very willing to help. not too easy but you learn and if you truly try you will be happy with the class
dont take this class in the summer. Literally something due everyday. kinda boring if you dont participate in discussions. likes to crack jokes.
Slattum!!! This guy is awesome! I took his class during summer, and it really destroyed me. He tells you the first day if you dont work and if its your only summer class you might get an A. It is a lot of reading and writing! But his teaching methods are approachable and he is a great professor. He'll give you what you deserve as long as you try.
I was in a learning community with him and Daurio and it was on Lord of the Rings. I feel like if it were just a normal english class I would have really enjoyed his class. He is funny and has interesting class discussions. He's a bit of a hard grader. I feel like I deserved an A but he gave me a B. Mostly class discussions and papers
Nils is a cool guy. He's really down to earth and really damn funny (took LotR class), but appearances can be deceiving. It seems like he'll be an easy grader but than destroy you at the end... I felt like I was doing perfectly fine than all the sudden he said I had an F at the last day, so I had to prove I actually did everything. But I passed.
Slattum was an awesome teacher! He is a little tough on grading papers, but he is very helpful and a funny guy. Really cares about his students..would take again if needed!
Great teacher & a funny guy! Class is hard work though, and he's a tough grader on tests and essays. You'll enjoy yourself, though!
I was in his LOTR class with Daurio. He rambles quite a bit during class discussions, which proved to get really boring. Unclear with his expectations, especially on large papers. Still received an A with him, but I've had much better English teachers in the past. Would not recommend if you struggle with English.
I found basically all of Nils' short stories to be uninteresting with the exception of maybe 1. He is a very tough grader but is willing to help. He has some pretty ridiculous expectations with novels as he gives 1 week intervals between plays like Hamlet and Lysistrata and novels such as Cuckoo's Nest and Crying of Lot 49. I would not recommend.
All I can say is this prof is hard!!!! Very boring class, too many novels to read (you only get about a week to read a 100-200 page novel), you also have to read other stupid boring novels, hard grader, hard tests and essays, etc.. I can go on and on... All I can say is I do not recommend him at all. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!
Very unclear about assignment requirements. Too many novels; he only gives 1 week to read each play or novel. He grades extremely hard, his essay requirements are unclear and it has to be his way, no exceptions. Avoid this class at all costs. I wish I had dropped when I had the chance.
Nils is off the charts. He has pretty dry humor but he always keeps his cool. Sometimes i feel like it's the only class I'm actually learning something in. You have to do a reading journal almost every class but other than that theres no homework besides essays (I only had to write 3 all semester) But anywho... take this guy, you'll like him
The worst teacher I have ever had in my life. He acts like a kid and thinks like a kid. Its almost like I am in elementary school. Bottom line is he is extremely hard, unhelpful, too much hard work, too many novels to read, etc.. I hate this prof and if I had a chance I would fire him right away. DO NOT TAKE HIM AT ALL!!!!
DO NOT LISTEN TO THE OTHER COMMENTS!!!! Slattum is the man!!! He is passionate about his teaching, and every literature you reads is being taught for a reason. He teaches the best literature! He gets you to start analyzing literature like a true critic. I LOVED HIS CLASS and miss the class allready! :(...TAKE HIM IF YOU WANT TO LEARN!!!!!!!
Great English M01C class, he really picks your brain. It's a lot of hard work but he's awesome. He let's you rewrite papers. If you want a challenge, this is your guy.
A difficult professor who isn't helpful. Way too much reading in the class and little time given to read. One test was given and 4 essays, but doesn't give helpful direction for essays. This class killed my interest in going into English. Take with a different professor!
Was challenging but very helpful if you applied yourself. Was willing to sit down and help you outline your paper. Gave you rewrites for every paper except the final paper. A lot of readuing material but overall gave everyone the benefit of the doubt when it came to final grades.
Nils is funny and laid back. It's like he is related to JIM GAFFIGAN, I SWEAR! He doesn't give much hw, just about 5 essays in the semester, which he grades quite fairly. He takes an interest in his students and is super funny. I am so ashamed I keep dropping out, but its SO worth facing him awkwardly the next semester to take his class again.
He is a liar, the class is unbelievably hard and he thinks he knows everything even if he the dumbest prof I have ever seen in my life. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!! Too many essays and too many novels to read. He rushes everything and all I can say is he is the worst prof in the world. Take my word for it and do not take him because you will waste your time!
Worst professor I ever had
One of the best professors I've ever had. Actually makes you think and learn to analyze lit. Comes across as tough in the beginning but really wants to see his students succeed and will help you IF YOU ASK. Really, he is a genuinely good teacher and a good person. Take his class!!
Slattum was cool, but annoyed the crap outta me. His class dragged on too much for my taste. He was disorganized, and tardy. You have a reading response every class, and he checks hw every class as well. If you don't like writing papers, he's not the guy to take. He'll fail you if you don't give him what he wants.
Cool guy in a weird way. Odd sense of humor. Willing to help students. Gives lots of opportunity for you to do well. Would take him again.
A great teacher, he really knows his stuff. If you have questions ask them! He gives you chances to redue all papers but the final, just answer his questions in the rewrite and you will get atleast 1 letter grade better. Over all the best english teacher i have ever taken!
This professor was by far my favorite english professors. His grading is hard but if you just rewrite whatever he asks you too you can get a better grade. And if you just do the journals its an easy a. dont underestimate yourself. he is awesome
Don't take this class if you don't like to be involved in discussions, he will call on everyone. Two journal responses per week, 3 papers, in class essay is the final. Interesting class, funny professor, you get out of it what you put in.
Amazing class. I couldn't have asked for a better professor. I love to write, and he really helped me increase my talent. He pushes you beyond your comfort zone, and allows you to reach your potential. Don't take him if you do not take english seriously. He is amazing, but also a little more geared to those who like english.
You'll read lots of nonfiction readings from the textbook & write reading responses to them for homework, and there's 2 papers, 1 research paper, and 1 in-class paper for the final. He does grade somewhat hard, but he's very helpful in helping rewrite. He can be pretty funny, makes the material interesting, and engages students. Loved this class!
Nils taught my three-pronged teacher humanities class and he was probably the worst of the three. He didn't seem to know anything about the material and his comments bothered me. It was an easy class but Slattum either doesn't know anything or he just doesn't care.
Nils is an awesome guy, there is not any way around that. He lets you redo all of your essays to increase your grade, however you can't read his writing and he wastes a ton of time in class talking about nonsense. He is also overly strict about attendance, he counts your attendence down to the half hour, this is college not highschool.
Reality check Nils, this is colllege not High School. I work for a living and if you miss 4 classes he drops you even if it was a medical emergency. He also counts time you miss down to minutes. Chill out.
NILS IS AMAZING...LY HOT I loved humanities with him and tracy. It was a good time. Everyone should take this class.
I have to say, the humanitiesM01 class is my all time favorite class ive ever taken. sad to see i cannot take it next semester. Nils is an awesome teacher and very laid back.
Nils is an amazing professor! He is quite a funny guy, and his class discussions are very thought provoking. Do expect to work hard. He grades fairly, and I have become a better writer after his class. If you can, take the LOTR learning community with him and Dr. Daurio. I would take another class with him.
The worst professor ever! DO NOT TAKE HIM ever!!!!
He seems nice cuz he lets u redo essays but then he grades them on his mood. if u r a talkative person, u will be his FAV. student but don't argue with him ever even thou u want to participate. plz ask ur grade every 3 weeks cuz he doesnt discuss about ur grade in the class ever. iIDK where i m standing in class til i get the final grade, D.
If you are science/engineering majors, dont take his class. I think this professor is very useful for people majoring English/history majors. If you are just transfer stduent and want to get A, just take Gill.
I got an D in Slattum class so I took the same class again in Ventura College with Mrs. Wolfe. I got an A. Idk what did i do wrong in Nils's class. Cuz i went to his class everyday. 100% attendant. Turn in every essays and homework on time. I'm not a lazy person and I do my work done. He didn't see my effort, but Mrs. Wolfe saw it. :)
Fun class I like Nils. Took a long time to grade things which pushed back other essays and I didn't mind that.
Nills is soo cool really opens your eyes to ideas this class is hard! but you learn so much because of it it! super hard grader but you can re write papers! he keeps things interesting! all you need is the book of story's not the other one.. keep up with journals and the 4 essays and you'll be fine! he is a great professor
I had a horrible experience with this professor. He is an extremely harsh grader on papers and you must speak up constantly or he wont really feel like you are participating. I would really recommend taking another professor.
Slattum is a great professor. However, there were a lot of days in class when he allowed the discussion to get off topic and it was irritating. He is not the hardest essay grader, but he is much harder than he seems during class. He is laid back and very insightful. He doesn't have a chile pepper but he deserves one because I thought he was hot!
I never write reviews but I wanted to for Slattum because he was so awesome! Probably my favorite teacher so far in college. I took M01C and it was tough, but only because it makes you think! I got an A and learned a lot. Slattum is so hilarious and a super encouraging. Great teacher.
Slattum is an awesome professor. He requires participation, so if you are a voyeur, be prepared to be called out. Tests are extremely detailed. You MUST read everything in the chapters (including captions) to do well. Lots or reading write ups and 2 major papers. Very fair at grading. I hope to taking more classes w/him. He's a hottie too!
Awesome teacher! Not really hard to get a good grade. Just read the works and show up to class, you'll get it from there. Make sure you do show up to class though. He does take attendance and will drop you for missing too many.
Mr. Slattum's class is fun. He is pretty humorous and doesn't stress the students out. He is serious about attendance though. The class isn't hard as long as you participate. As joking as he is Mr. Slattum is serious when it comes down to grading papers.I liked this though because it made me try harder. I recommend taking him.
Nils is a great teacher, very friendly & easy to get along with. He's pretty funny also, and makes class interesting. only downside was how hard he grades the essays. I'm normally a pretty decent writer. (I usually get A's on essays) I got an F on the 1st paper, but he gives you a second chance with it then i got a B. he also offers help.
Slattum is a kind man. He grades hard, but makes you think rather than mindlessly writing papers (like i used to do) As a creative writer, this isn't a course to express your creative side, which was difficult for me. BUT you can be creative in other ways. I just had to find those ways. Fun guy. Hard grader, must attend class.
This guys is HILARIOUS! He makes difficult subject material fun and exciting while keeping the entire class on their toes & thinking hard. Each class consisted of discussion from previous night's readings, and class flies by if you participate! He is a tough grader when it comes to essays, but was willing to help when I had questions!
This class isn't an easy A. I got a B & it was hard to earn. Don't try to BS a paper, he is a tough grader & will read right through it. Class is primarily made up of class discussions so if you're insightful & not shy, you will enjoy it. With that being said, he is a great teacher, really cool guy, & I really did learn a lot from him
Professor Slattum's class is centered more towards philosophy than English writing and language. It was not pleasant to be in his class at all.
Professor Slattum is a really nice person and an excellent teacher. He teaches you how to truly appreciate literature. His class was a challenge, I had to work for my A, but the lessons learned were worth it. If you do not like to talk about books in a class discussion, or do not have much insight to give, this is not the class for you.
I've never really liked English, but this class was great. We read interesting material and he's always open to your opinion about a text as long as you can support it. The tests are easy but expect to read alot and work hard on the papers(4 total). My favorite professor at Moorpark so far.
Slattum is a really cool guy. He is very insightful and you will find yourself wishing everyone in the world would take his class and gain some perspective. Be prepared to read and write. Its no cakewalk. The topics he selects are eye opening and inspiring, however, so the class is never dull. I found myself speaking up even though I'm super shy.
Great English professor! His class discussions are very interesting and on the days he does lecture it's very useful information. He's very funny and very helpful. He kind of gives a lot of assignments but if you do them in a timely manner you'll be fine. Really cool guy.
love him! amazing teacher, always willing to help and very clear.
Slattum is awesome! His class was definitely a challenge and you do a lot of reading/writing, but he really teaches you to think. My critical thinking definitely improved a lot in this class. He gives scantron tests on books, so be sure to do the reading--the tests are specific! Slattum makes daily references to Walter White. He's a funny guy!
Lots of reading but 3 out of 4 papers did'didn't require work cited pages or even parenthetical citations. Kind of strict on the grading, but if you go to him during office hours he'll tell you everything you need to get an A on the paper's rewrite.
NILS IS THE BEST. He really loves his students, he is extremely intelligent, and the class is always fun with him. He communicates with his students really well, and likes to get to know everyone. Really funny guy. Oh, and he likes Breaking Bad, so even better. He's a VERY FAIR grader. Isn't biased. Do your work and you'll get an A.
Mr S is easily my fav teacher at MP! 3 essays and a research paper. I actually liked the research one the most. There's also journals and tests on the reading. He's hilarious and makes class interesting. Make sure to go to his office for rewrites and he will tell you exactly what he's looking for. I enjoyed going to his class every day and miss it!
AMAZING professor. I looked forward to coming into class. His discussions are fun and engaging. He really cares about his students and their success. If only all our professors were like him. He is challenging, but it's for your benefit. Use Breaking Bad references and he'll love you forever.
I cannot stress enough how much I loved his class. I took it last semester and already miss coming here twice a week! The discussions get you to think and his papers really challenge you in a good way. He is an overall great guy- insightful, hilarious, and helpful. I would take this class again in a heartbeat. You will NOT regret taking this class!
Slattum makes it really easy to talk in discussions, doesnt force anything on anyone, & makes everyone feel like their opinion is correct. Weekly readings but take the time to understand them. If u try hard and take the time to look at what hes putting in front of u, his class is one of the best and i feel ive gained a lot of knoweledge from it
Absolutely loved this course. Mr. Slattum is so hilarious and insightful at the same time. Makes a lot of Breaking Bad references. He's really great at making the literature understandable! Weekly journals on short stories, four papers, three tests on three books. He tells you exactly what you need to pass. Do the work and TRY! Highly recommended!
Great professor, very helpful and motivated us to want to do well.
Mr. Slattum is great. He pushes you and makes you work hard, but by the end of the class I felt like I really got something out of it. Show up to class, PARTICIPATE, and concentrate on presenting well written essays and you'll be golden.
Slattum makes every class one to remember. Not too difficult, a few papers and a couple scantron tests on novels you read, and one test on literary terms. You will learn a lot about writing, and find yourself looking at things from new perspectives. This guy loves teaching and it shows. If you want to get smarter, TAKE SLATTUM!!!
Be prepared to win Nils lottery. His attitude makes him spicy.
Amazing professor! He is extremely intelligent and has a great sense of humor (very witty!). His lectures can be long but are in no way boring, he always keeps students engaged. I am so glad I took his class, I learned a lot of really neat things. Take his class, he'd great!!
Is a fantastic teacher. He is well versed in his field and shows an obvious passion for teaching. There are quite a few books you'll have to read. Class lectures were always interesting and he's open to all interpretations from the reading. He's pretty funny too. I definitely recommend that you take his class.
Slattum is the best instructor at Moorpark! His lectures are riveting and he inspires to to think outside the box. I loved his class!
The most demanding and rewarding teacher I've ever had. He forced him to dig deep and find something that I didn't know I had. Be ready to read and write. If you pass his class, you're truly ready to move up. DO the legwork and take your time. Our class dropped from 45 to 20, and had some great discussions. Ask him about the cyclops.
I loved taking humanities with Professor Slattum. He encourages you to grow in your thoughts and opinions by bringing up interesting topics. He is a huge reason why I changed my major to Liberal Studies. Highly recommend this professor!
Fair, understanding, hilarious, and inspiring. I loved this class so much. He really does create an engaging and interesting class. He picks relevant readings and encourages debate and discussion. He's a pretty tough grader, but you get what you give in terms of effort. ALL THE CHILI PEPPERS FOR SLATTUM! Take this class, you won't regret it!!!
Slattum is hands down the best professor I whose class I've had the pleasure and honor of enrolling in at Moorpark. He is funny, kind, accommodating, cheerful and incredibly wise. After having a rough time in my M01B class, Slattum completely turned my view of english around. If you do not enroll in his class, you're doing yourself an injustice.
He was very funny but definitely liked giving out reading responses.
Slattum Is a great Guy and all but his tests are really difficult. He gives out Information to know for a test one class before the test. For me that was only 2 days to study. There was a lot to read in a short amount of time and not enough Information in knowing what to study. He is helpful but a hard grader.
Slattum is literally the coolest teacher. I have his class at 8AM & i manage to stay awake because his class is always interesting. Hes really intelligent and super laid back. Hes not intimidating at all, so u really feel like u can ask for help if u need it. u need to keep up with the work & try, but i would 100% take him again. He prepares you.
He's a great guy! His class isn't too hard, but I feel like you have to be a hard working student who has been prepared for a college class. He definitely prepares his students for higher division classes. You have to read a lot, and study, but like i said, if you're a good student, you shouldn't worry!
He's a really cool teacher, but has the worst writing! It was so hard to read the comments on my papers and what sucks is the comments were important to rewrite the paper.
Participation matters so do the homework and show up. That said, classes don't have a lot of structure and he is so entertaining, but you won't learn a lot. He assigns a lot of work and gives great feedback. He grades tough but gives you opportunities to raise your grade. Slattum is a super cool guy
He is a good guy but an O K teacher. He's too hyped on this website. Basically he doesn't teach anything new. All your English knowledge has to come from previous classes. He is an o k grader though he does give you an option to rewrite a paper for more points. Take him if you like participating in class alot.
Critical thinking not my strength. But really enjoyed class and got better! It's a good, but not crazy amount of reading. Prof. is funny, and personable, slightly disorganized, but totally fair. I appreciated the clear syllabus. Very willing to answer questions and gives solid feedback. Seriously enjoyed the reading list-would totally recommend.
Honestly one of the best professors I've had at Moorpark. He is tough but taking his class is worth it. He gives you chances to redo papers and most of the tests are easy if you do the reading. Easy midterm and easy final. Honestly 1010 guy
If you want to develop your skills, and become a stronger writer, take his class! He's NOT an easy teachergrader, but his lectures are interesting(LOTS of discussion), and the readings are pretty good.
Mr. Slattum is probably the best professor I've had at Moorpark thus far. I'm an English major partially because of him. His classes are discussion based, and he encourages you to think beyond your "System 1". Make an effort, and get to know him! Wish I can take him again!
Slattum is probably one of the best English teachers at Moorpark. He's a little tough on grading, but he's more than willing to offer advice and help if you ask. He wants you to think and work for your grade. If you really want to learn to be a critical thinker, he's the teacher for you. Do the work, listen and ask questions and you WILL get an A
Awesome teacher. Knows his stuff and makes it interesting to learn. Highly recommended. He's fun and there's a lot of class participation and working together.
He is a pretty chill and hilarious guy no doubt about it, but he really does not teach the class at all. In order to pass the tests make sure you make your own notes from the textbook since he does not teach. Other than that it's a somewhat interesting class.
Professor Slattum is a great teacher! He is a pretty hard grader, especially on the papers. I also learned the hard way that his tests on the books are pretty tough. Your going to need to read the material and understand it. Spark notes will not work! But overall he makes you really think and learn through this class. Highly recommend!
Slattum can be a tough grader for the first essay. However, his critique does help you improve your writing. He is really funny and his class is overall enjoyable. he gives breaks in between and if he doesn't then he lets you leave early. He is always willing to help as well. I would definitely take him again.
Nils is hands down the best professor I have had at Moorpark College. He pushes you beyond your normal system one. He assigns a lot of readings, but the lectures and discussions are amazing. He is there to help you on any paper, if you show the effort. He really cares about his students success and has a great sense of humor!
He's a very funny man. The short stories he picks us to read are very interesting. Tough grader on the essays but offers you to revise it. There is a lot of outside reading which kind of sucked but overall the class was very fun to take.
Slattum is really educated in his subject. I would give him all 5's if it weren't for his lack of clarity. Reading tests are pretty straight forward, but for essays and reading journals he doesn't really explain what it is you're supposed to do, and when you ask, he says "Just write". Take this class if you like being completely independent
I took this class and honestly I had to force myself to go. I don't like bashing on people but this class was just not a great experience for me. Its more busy work and less of what you should be doing in class.
Mr. Slattum is an awesome teacher and really cares for his students. He wants you to succeed in his class but you have to work for it. He gives great feedback and my writing did improve a lot. However this class can be very difficult at times and you have to work hard for a good grade. Participation is very important and get ready to read a lot.
One of the best professors/guys out there. He assigns a lot of readings but are all good books or articles. Funny guy that wants you to learn and be able to think critically. over all would recommend to anyone. just grades tough on papers but only have to write two papers and is willing to help.
Absolute must take class. I went to Moorpark for 4 years and honestly, I think Professor Slattum is the best professor I took at the college. He's a real inspiration and wants to know what you think. Participitation in the class discussion is mandatory to pass but he's very encouraging even if you're shy. He's funny too.
Very engaging professor. If you read his material, the journals are easy (read the material and do the journals!) His papers are hard, but that's what this class is about. He will challenge you to dig deep, & think critically about the material we're writing about. Nils is by far the BEST English teacher I've EVER had. Challenging but very helpful
Definitely one of the best English professors i've had. He truly makes you think hard AND work hard for your grade, but it is worth it. His voice is also very chocolatey and soothing.
Slattum is the greatest teacher I've ever had. I took him for two English classes and I would take him again if I needed another class. You need to be in class to pass but you want to be in his class so it's not hard. Great teacher, very caring, and personable. Highly recommend taking him.
I have taken 2 classes with him and he is sensational. He is hilarious and open to new ideas and ways of thinking. He is very interactive and calls for a lot of class participation. He is not a guaranteed A but if you do the work and participate in class you will get a good grade and have a great time in the process
Great class. Interesting with thought-provoking discussions and assignments. Lectures were varied and interspersed with other kinds of activities. Happy to take the next course in the sequence with him. Strongly recommend!
The best teacher you could find while at Moorpark. Slattum is a fantastic teacher who truly makes both his Humanities and English courses a pleasure to be a part of. He's funny, down to earth, and very constructive in what he teaches. He's improved my writing tremendously! Tests are pretty easy, just read and show up to class and you'll be good,
NILS TAUGHT ME SO GOOD. You learn so many stuff in his class!!! So helpful and deserves ALL THE CHILI PEPPERS!!!
One of the nicest professors but doesn't teach material thats on the test. Be prepared to read the book and teach yourself. Also you must be on top of your dates, he doesn't remind you of upcoming tests
Nils is really cool and nice! He is very easy to talk to and always gets back to you if you make an appointment with him. There is A LOT of reading and A LOT of analyzing. He is a very tough grader, but if you put in effort and try he defiantly takes that into consideration.
This won't be an easy A, but honestly I wish this guy was my professor for all of my classes, he's so great. Hilarious and definitely wants you to succeed. There's a lot of reading, but it's manageable. Would definitely take him again.
Not the easiest A, but definitely doable and even enjoyable. He really wants to help you get into the habit of analyzing everything you read. That said, there is a lot of reading that you have to stay on top of because participation is extremely important to him. Also, always read the books that you're being tested on.
Great teacher and easy class. We had homework every night but it only takes about 20minutes to complete. He's very funny and super helpful. He will go through your brainstorm/essays with you to make sure you get an A on every paper. Highly recommend
Nils is a great teacher who cares about his students. The topics covered in this class will really make you think about life in a different way. It is not your typical English class, it is much better. Do the journals and write the essays and you shouldn't have a problem passing the class.
Mr. Slattum is a hilarious teacher and such a funny guy. He wasn't very hard on grading the papers, but the tests I found to be VERY confusing and hard. For the tests, you study everything on your own. His lectures in class have nothing to do with the tests, therefore you must read the textbook top from bottom; tests are VERY SPECIFIC.
He's fascinating to listen to, will make you laugh at least twice per class, has a voice that rivals Morgan Freeman, cares about his students I think more than he cares about his own children, and, using the Socratic method, creates VERY thought-provoking discussions during class.
This is not a normal English class. Most class sessions are class-wide discussions that will really get you to think about various subjects. There is homework every night, but it really only takes half an hour. I strongly recommend taking this class.
I L O V E D Slattum!! Definitely get ready to read and you must complete the journals because it is a pretty important part of your grade! His discussions are really interesting and enjoyable. Hilarious for sure. You will for sure laugh in his class.
Professor Slattum is truly an amazing instructor. This was my second class with him and he is fantastic and very engaging. His lectures are interesting and he is always open to answering questions whether it be about lecture or any of the assignments. For essays take advantage of his office hours! He is extremely helpful!
By far, best English teacher I've ever had. He really helps you become a better writer, just ask him for help. He cares a lot about his students. This is not an easy A, but if you study for tests, do all the reading, and put effort into essays, you should be fine. He is also hilarious. Laughed every day. Class was fun, but it can drag on awhile.
Great teacher with an amazing personality and passionate about literature. Good amount of homework. The papers are not too bad, but the big 7-10 page one is especially challenging and will take up A LOT more time then you think. The tests on the books you read are easy. Has a very chocolatey voice (Make sure to Tell him that in class he loves it)
So Nils is a pretty cool teacher. Going from M01A to this class was challenging. He makes you read a lot and do journal responses about what you read. This class was strange because its more than half way through the semester and I still dont know the grade of my first essay that I turned in in February. His class is good and would reccomend him.
One of my favorite classes so far.. lots of reading/analyzing throughout the semester but nothing too bad, a great prof!
Nils Slattum is one of the best professors I've ever had. His witty attitude and positive outlook on life is truly inspiring and it radiates in his classroom. He is extremely intelligent and truly wants to help every student. If you are going to Moorpark, you have to take Slattum. He also has the most amazing voice in the world!
So lucky I took this professor. The class was not too difficult, but still requires effort and deep thought. Lots of reading and analyzing, there are a few essays, and a final in class essay. He is willing to meet with you to help you brainstorm for essays, or help you reflect on ideas. There are 3 tests on books, and one vocab test. Actually read!
One of my favorite teachers ever. You have to work hard on the essays but he is willing to help improve your writing. He also makes you want to work hard. He is entertaining but expects you to work hard. Spark notes does not help with every literature test. Although, you do not need to buy every book that he has listed; try to look them up
Slattum is the one of the best English teachers I have ever met, he is interesting, funny and makes his lectures interesting. He really tries to try to find connections between the younger generations and the things you have to read. You are required to read a total of 8 books, and if you just sparknote the night before, you won't pass the test.
ALL TIME FAVORITE PROFESSOR. Take this class if you want to be educated, read amazing books, learn how to think critically, and write well. You have to work for it. He doesn't mess around. But he is hilarious and has amazing lectures. Don't procrastinate in this class. Do the homework. Study. It's worth it. How else can I say it? TAKE THIS CLASS!
I could not recommend an English professor more. Nils truly cares about his students and wants you to succeed in his class. You will use all of the books he asks you to purchase. Pay attention to the readings, do the journals, ask for feedback on your papers, and youll do just fine
Professor Slattum made this course interesting and easy to learn. He encourages participation and engages his students to think beyond the surface of literature. He's hilarious, inspiring, and caring. With all that said, this class requires lots of reading and papers though, so be prepared to work! tl;dr - amazing teacher, highly recommended!
Slattum is a pretty cool guy and I think he genuinely wants you to become a better writer. With that said, be prepared to read a lot and make sure to put a lot of work into his essays, they can be quite difficult. But, he does give good feedback. Please take advantage of his office hours, he will help you.
Second time with Slattum. Love his classes. He definitely wants students to improve in their writing, so don't give up after the first essay! Stay on top of the journals and readings!!! Leaving them until the end is a lot more stress than you want! It also helps to take notes from class discussions for future assignments. Sparknotes will not help.
He was a fun teacher. He kept the classroom discussions interesting and respected each of his students ideas. My only complaint would be the lack of feedback on our papers and reading responses throughout the semester. Participation in classroom discussion matters.. you don't have to talk that much but be sure to add a thing or two here & there.
Slattum is one of the few English professors that will actually make you a better writer and reader. There is a lot of reading (usually short stories) that you discuss in class for deeper meaning. You take a couple quizzes on books that are pretty straight forward. Always willing to meet and help with the essays (heavily reccomend doing this).
Slattum is a great professor. He is extremely difficult though and I still do not know my grade in the class. Most of my class failed the Odyessus test so just be ready for that test to be dropped. Lots of work and you cannot slack so be ready.
Slattum is a laid back but respected guy who uses humor to keep you interested. Great class overall and all you gotta do is honestly read the assignments and you're golden. Show up and do the work and just talk w him like you know him! Understanding and just wants to interact w his students.
I absolutely loved Mr. Slattum. If you want to get better at English, take him. He greatly improved my English skills. He makes English lectures much more interesting! 100% one of my favorites!!!!
I cannot recommend Slattum more, he was awesome. He's very likable, chill, funny, and helpful. He really walked students through the thought process of formulating papers and analyzing literature. I would, without hesitation, take another class with professor Slattum.
He makes art and literature interesting. Most classes are very interesting topics, or he makes it interesting at least. He doesn't really go over the test material but you have 2 really important papers if you didn't do to well on the test. He's a really cool guy. o and buy the book!
Professor Slattum is definitely a great teacher to take for english. You cannot expect him to tell you when a deadline is coming up, that you need to just know. For reading tests, he gets very specific and unpredictable, even if you know the book inside and out it is still really hard. Other than that RECOMMEND!
Funny dude, not the best professor. I think hes rated high cuz hes chill. Theres a few times you go over what you read, but for the most part he just talks in class about stuff thats not even on the test?! Get ready to teach yourself the entire class from the book if you wanna pass. A few reading responses, 2 papers, museum visit, final.
One of my fav professors. Really chill guy and makes learning literature really interesting. Genuinely a good-hearted fellow and I cant help but say hello to him everytime I see him outside of lecture
I'm loving having him as a teacher. He has a really good personality, very genuine. However, this class is not easy. He makes you work for your grade. Lot's of dense reading and he grades exams and papers very harshly. BUT, if you put effort in and ask for help he will give you all his attention. He wants his students to do well.
Slattum was by far the best english prof i've ever had. Super chill dude, let us call him Nils. BUT this is not an easy peasy no reading-pass english class. Nils makes you WORK for a good grade. Gotta read 4 front-back books every 2 weeks and then test with detailed questions. Essay's weren't as bad, overall awesome guy but tough with tests.
Slattum is the best!!! He makes English enjoyable for all of his students and he's a really funny guy. But he assigns a lot of readings so be prepared for that and always try to go to class.
Professor Slattum was by far the best professor I've ever had. He was so inspiring, helpful, and made class really interesting. He discussed issues beyond just ancient art and culture, and he made you excited to learn. He gives great feedback on papers and the exams are easy! He is a great resource for general life advice as well!
In my class we ended up not using the textbook, but he does have one. He is by far the best english Professor Ive had including high school teachers. Hes there to help you and as long as you participate (he grades that) and contribute you will learn and pass with a good grade. And hes funny so take his class.
Hes funny... Good teacher
One of my favorite prof/teachers I've had the pleasure of taking. He's a genuinely nice person and is constantly wanting to learn more about his students. He is patient and very understanding and somehow manages to make a typically boring subject seem interesting. There is a fair amount of textbook reading if you want to do well on the tests.
Definitely makes you work for your A however you will learn so much in the process. Great teacher and even greater guy. You must read the books in order to pass the tests, reading them on spark notes won't help you. Essays he assigns are long but he sets up individal appts with you and they really help. Show up, put the effort in and you'll pass.
Slattum is a real one. I took him for both Survey of the Arts and English M01B last semester and he was great. His English class is pretty heavy on the reading but you can still pull through with a high grade. I would 100% recommend his Survey of the Arts class, it's a very easy A and it really changed how I view art.
Slattum is a good, whole-hearted professor and cares about his students in the classroom. Work is easy as long as you're willing to read fairly long articles/books and write in your journal every other day. Not many essays to write, but there are some tests on the books we read. Just do the homework and participate in discussions, you'll be fine.
Loved having Slattum! Makes class very enjoyable, thought-provoking, and profitable. He's honestly so good at fostering conversations, helping encourage you to find, have, and share your voice not only in word but also writing. Gives great constructive feedback, very understanding, funny, and approachable. Helped me fall in love with writing again
I absolutely loved taking from Slattum. He connects with his students very well and gives amazing feedback. We wrote short journals & had tests on our reading. There were two major essays. Hard work is rewarded, but you need to put in the effort. He makes time to meet with students outside of class which is very helpful. I 100% recommend his class!
He's a chill guy, but this class can be really stressful because he barely lets you know what was going on half of the time; you have to make sure to check the Canvas homepage daily. The tests are a huge part of your grade and they're super difficult, so don't procrastinate on reading. Not an easy A.
He goes on rants about things that don't matter. Make sure you pay extra attention because he won't go back to what he said. Regularly check the home page because he doesn't put anything anywhere else.
Professor Slattum is a nice guy and an even funnier teacher, but he just kind of goes on incredibly long discussions instead of teaching us. He expects you to come to your own conclusion on the stories that are read. Tests are really hard, but he drops the lowest score, which helps.
Mr. Slattum is by far one of the best English teachers EVER. Although he is a harsh grader, it's only because he wants students to get the most out of his lectures and class. He's super funny and presents a very friendly and welcoming environment for his classes and is very passionate about his lectures. I'd definitely take his course again
Tough grader and lots of reading, but he is a kind and funny professor. Required readings include: The Odyssey, Oedipus Rex, two stories from Canterbury tales, Hamlet, Pride and Prejudice, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, and some short stories. Three tests on three of those books, lowest test drops, and a midterm on vocab. Two essays too.
I enjoyed him and his class, despite it being online, but a lot of his work is simply due at the end of the semester rather than throughout it. Keep that in mind if you're going to take his class, I hadn't let myself do it gradually, then was stuck with a lot of work at the end of the semester. Get ready to write papers, too! He likes them.
Class was asynchronous, yea he's a harsh grader, but he was straightforward about what he expected in his syllabus, try not to ignore assignments and follow the weekly due dates he recommends (journals, around 2 essays and one research paper), if you think of yourself to be a good and efficient writer then this class won't give you any trouble.
Took this class after having taken his ENG M01A class. Was sooooo much easier. Most days we just talked/looked at art. Two three page papers that aren't too bad and a few assignments here and there. Definitely would recommend taking.
Professor Slattum is one of the best teachers I've ever had. There's a lot of reading and writing to do, so don't fall behind. Participation is a must if you want to succeed. His feedback on writing is extremely helpful and he's easily accessible if you have any questions. Tests aren't too bad if you read carefully. He's funny and kind as well.
Slattum was probably one of my favorite professors at Moorpark, I took his English M01B and am planning on taking his M01C course now. There is much reading and tests to prepare for. This course was definitely great and I recommend!
Class discussions are super fun and engaging but writing papers are tricky because your'e expected to be a good writer beforehand. He is super nice and will answer any of your questions but there is not much teaching going on, it's just reading books and short stories and doing assignments on them.
English has always been my best subject and I have never struggled and I have only taken the hardest and highest english classes before. This professor makes you do so much and grades so hard and makes you question yourself. He wasn't bad just get ready to write a lot and take a lot of time for this class. People did better by using outside sources
Professor Slattum's class was not too difficult and I did pretty well. For me the only problem was he was not always the best with updating grades and responding to emails.
I fell asleep in his class once, instead of being mad, he took me aside and asked if I was okay. He's always there to help you with anything. He's really funny, and his assignments are painfully easy. You do have to show up. he allows for 4 days of being absent in case something happens in your life. Either tragic or you just want to sleep in.
Professor Slattum really opened my eyes, and I enjoyed his class. I will never forget what I learned.
I felt that he really cared about his class and everyone learning well. While I do find some of the course material to be not quite up-my-alley I still enjoyed the course and him as a professor quite a bit. There was one student in my class that was hella disrespectful and he handled it pretty well.
I got an A in this class but would still not take this professor again. Professor Slattum can be quite belittling of students during required discussions and often laughs publicly at student responses when he does not agree. You are allowed 4 absences before you get dropped with NO exceptions even if it's an emergency. Class is lecture heavy.
Prof Slattum is definitely a cool guy, but his class was just annoying. Starts the day off with putting students on the spot, having to read journal responses out loud to the whole class. If you don't love to ALWAYS participate in class discussions, stay away. Also tests are taken at home online, but you are recorded on video cam... big NO from me.
I got an A, but I wouldn't recommend the class. He takes forever to grade and is bad at responding to emails. I was walking at graduation, and he still hadn't posted final grades. I was anxious to find out if I even passed. He's a kind and funny professor, but ngl it was a stressful class, especially with how he grades things.
Very caring professor and clearly wants you to improve/learn, though his grading can be rough its because he cares. Maybe wouldn't recommend for extremely shy people (me, participation is 100 pts) but he is NOT mean! Just mention it to him. His grading criteria is also pretty clear. Definitely not like other English professors I have taken before
Very amazing teacher. I hadn't taken English since my last year of highschool back in 2023 and he reminded me of the ones I had back then. Very sweet very funny yes participation matters and he's old fashion with no electronics but it's so worth it. He's very caring and helpful so if you want to pass English take Slattums class.
