Her in class lectures are kind of all over the place. The powerpoint notes she provides are incomplete and are only usefull for the diagrams they contain. Her exams can contain vague and poorly worded questions. She tries very hard though, and wants her students to succeed. Studying from the textbook is highly recommended.
Hard to understand. It's even harder to pay attention in her class.
It's hard to pay attention in her lectures. She doesn't have a strong voice so you're likely to get distracted by something else going on it class. Her notes aren't laid out very well, and she struggles to teach the material further adding to the unclarity.
Her notes are good but her lectures suck. She can't explain the material very well, can't answer questions and I always fell asleep in her class... =|
Nice lecture material. Need to speak up a bit. Exams are hard but fair. Very helpful and wants you to succede. Good prof.
She does not seem interested in the material she is teaching for biology. She earlier mentioned she got her PhD in biochemistry - this is reflected in her lectures. Lectures are boring and monotonous, sometimes hard to understand and all over the place. Tests are unbelievably difficult and produced low class averages. I don't recommend her for 107.
She has fair exams that she prepares you for. Her lectures become better in structure as the term goes by, sometimes she goes quickly in an area and jumps around. She has corny jokes which are pretty funny but nobody really laughs at. She knows her stuff and is getting better each term I've heard for teaching the material. U can go see her anytime.
Tests are fairly easy
Helpful professor. She was clearly interested in the material and was always there when you couldn't understand a concept. Recommend!
Great prof! She clearly shows a keen interest in biology and truly wants to help her students out! LOTS of effort needs to be put out by students themselves as the course is pretty intense for 100-level. Show up to class to get the awesome notes, study the material well enough, and you should be set! She's super helpful, dont be shy with her (:
She's ridiculous, i asked her a question and her reply was "thats a great question" and continued teaching. then she taught us the photosystems completely wrong and told us to forget everything we just learned. brutal
Great power point notes. They're easy to read and study from but you must print them off beforehand and attend class to get everything she adds in. She was very difficult to get ahold of for help on assignments and seemed like she didn't care about the students. Her tests have a few really hard "application" questions on material she doesn't teach.
I thought she was a good prof. Provides practice questions in-class which really come in handy when studying for exams! Like someone else said, her voice is soft so you have to really pay attention.
I would have to say Nina was a horrible professor. She was not bad at explaining things but sometimes she would make mistake and teach us wrong info. Her tests are no where near fair. you think u are ready for the exam but not really. her questions are all inferred stuff and it feels that what u studied isn't tested. Stay away.
She's very intelligent and approachable. However, her notes are incredibly basic/simple and her exams ask multiple ''application'' questions. But, any calculation questions will always be like ones from the assignments. Despite this, I don't think her exams are fair overall. It's not impossible to do well, but tough on a full course load.
I know that people always say a proff sucks if they don't do well but this is the first time i believe that the exams are not fair. No formulas are given for the final, not cool (even physics finals provide a formula sheet). I've always given proffs the benefit of the doubt but not anymore. Oh yeah, practice questions are a joke.
Lectures are were interesting but she often had a hard time explaining concepts or would forget how to do practice problems, tough tests, tough marker, unclear expectations for exams, but was really nice about assignments, she'll give you extra time if you need it. Overall, avoid biochemistry if you don't need to take it.
If you know the material really well then you shouldn't have a problem in the exam but you have to study a lot for her midterms and especially the final. Her exams are extremely tough so be prepared. Don't skip class because she covers a lot of material in just one class. ADVICE: Stay on top of what she covers in class so you don't fall behind.
Nina, can be a hit or a miss. I found her lectures interesting because of the additional information she provided. However she was not very good at explaining the concepts. I would ask questions and she never had a good, clear, understanable answer. To really get a clear understanding of the subject matter I relied on other sources.
Honestly, THE WORST professor in my three years of university, asks you things on exams and assignments that were NEVER covered in lecture! Her lectures are ridiculous and so unclear, you have to fill in the blanks to slides that already make zero sense.. I just cannot stand her and she has completely turned me off of this subject or any relating
After reading previous comments, I was scared but Nina is a really great prof... but it is pretty unanimous that her tests are VERY tough. Most people never miss lectures and are all really keen and the class average is still in the high 50's, so you have to know your stuff but she is really approachable and passionate. Video lectures helpful!!
Nina's class was the toughest and most stressful class to take. Her notes are hard to follow and she expects you to know every little detail on her impossible exams. She rarely has office hours (if she shows up) and can be very condescending when you ask for help. Be prepared to receive a lower than expected grade in her class. (average-50s)
Biochem itself is a difficult class. ive had my experience of Biochem teachers and Nina is good. Yeah the averages are low but its people people under estimate the class. its actually not difficult at all, theres just a lot to memorize. Study and you'll be fine.
She rarely teaches , her fill in the blanks dont make sense and they are impossible.
Overall a very nice and enthusiastic Prof. Posts fill in the blank notes but not her actual slides. If you ask for help, she's there for you. Study hard and you'll be fine.
Nina is a good professor. She is eager to make the class like her. We had 5 online assignments that were tough but you got 3 attempts so you could get a good mark. Her midterm was tough but there is a lot of info in Bio 107 . I would definitely take again
Knows her stuff and is very straight forward in her lectures. Would recommend attending her lectures in order to do well. Minimal assignments and tests. Great lady and helpful when in need!
After a year a the U of A , MacEwan was a walk in the park. MacEwan needs to mark much harder. Easy GPA booster. She did a fantastic job compared to the profs at the U of A. Willing to help out in her office anytime. The students that complain are just lazy and/ or skip classes too often. If you show up and put in some effort its an easy A.
i am surprised nobody mentioned how hot she is. A supersexy version of welma from scooby doo. this welma will make daphne look bad :))) seriously OH and btw, dont bother buying the textbook. never used it
Definitely a good professor. Always willing to help and was an enjoyable teacher.
Easy A. Show up for class and read the notes. Never cracked the textbook as it was useless. She did a great job teaching the material. Only need 85% for an A. I would have been destroyed had I attended the U of A with how little work I did at Macewan to get an A. SO many dumb students is the class. Just memorize. No higher level thinking needed
nina makes students work in groups and lets us socialize in class. that is actuallly how i met my girlfriend. was back in bicm 200. owe that to her!!!!
If you like using knowledge outside of the pre-req's and enjoy tests that dont have anything to do with the lecture, this is the class for you. Didn't buy the textbook but did comprehensive study of notes and encountered questions totally unrelated to lecture material. Unless you have a strong background in organic chem, I recommend the textbook.
I personally didn't like her, it seemed like she didn't know what she was teaching and are terrible at giving examples, she says a lot of um's and uh's. Definitely look at some other profs before you take her, she seems like a caring person but she's just not that great of a professor IMO.
I think she is a great teacher, but her tests are just way to hard and long for a 50 min class. Also the practice midterm is not similar to the actual midterm unlike other classes I've taken (she throws never seen before questions).
Dr. Bernstein is a kind-hearted lady and seems like she really tries to do her best but her teaching needs major improvement. Exam questions can be ambiguous. Her notes are too vague and confusing to understand. The textbook is pretty useless. The exams are frustrating and discouraging. If you can I'd suggest taking intro biochem at the U of A.
Very difficult exams, Nina didn't test the principles of BICM. Instead she tested the minutia on her slides and thus, the exams were almost impossible. Memorize the lectures if you want to do well. Still though, I loved her class and learned a lot.
This was a hard class only because she tests on very specific things. Her assignments do help with tests. To do well, go to class & memorize her slides. ALSO if you can, take this class in the spring or summer (better prof)
Nina did not test the overall concepts of biochem, she tested us on specific details from her slides. I really enjoyed this class as it was interesting but I hated her tests as they did not reflect this course very well. The textbook was useless and her practice exams are nothing like the actual exams. Nina needs to improve her exams and teaching.
You really need to understand the material to do well in Nina's class. Exams are very difficult and require you to apply your knowledge. The assignments are a good tool to study off for exams. Try to take this class with another prof. She also expects you to watch video lectures in your own time which is unreasonable.
Cannot stress this enough, do not take her. The material wasn't hard, but her exams and assignments were something else. She made questions that made absolutely no sense in regards to her notes. Says textbook isn't mandatory but if you want to understand the material get the textbook. She didn't even know the answers to her own questions.
If you can, please try and find another prof for this class. She is the most confusing prof ive ever had. She says a lot of "umm" and "uhhh" and "oh yeah sorry" and just makes students more confused than ever. Its EXTREMELY FRUSTRATING AT TIMES. The material is very heavy and difficult so trust me when I say to find another prof. Horrible. RUN AWAY
Biochemistry is not a hard course but she made the class so difficult. Her practice exams do not help you at all. They are completely different from the midterm and the final exam. She will put in tricky questions/words that were not used in her PowerPoints that will throw you off on the exam. I do not recommend.
Nina makes biochem soo hardd, i would always be prepared for her midterms but her notes were nothing like her exams. It was so stressful just studying for her exams. Her final was the worst, mostly all the questions were very irrelevant.. this is the best way to lower down your GPA!!!!!!
She is a nice prof and cares about her students but the assignments and exams are way way above the difficulty of examples covered in class. Even going to class everyday and filling in the skeleton notes she provides doesn't seem to be enough for exams. I always seem to be missing information even though I wrote down everything she said.
WORST PROF EVER FOR BIOCHEM!!! avoid her class at all costs. her exams/quizzes are so freaking difficult and she words them horribly and her lecture videos are honestly no help, and she gives you extremely hard questions on the quizzes that are no where near what she taught. she also forgets what she teaches you and still tests you on it.
I started off the course thinking that this class would be easy as the material is pretty straightforward In fact it was easier than Chem 30 and bio107 The practice tests were also something I would always do well on Come time for the tests the questions made no sense You cannot write her tests with just listening to her lectures textbook isuseless
Yes, this course is challenging, however, I am someone who prepares themself well for exams and yet her quizzes are so hard. She literally doesn't teach you the concepts thoroughly then asks you such a badly worded detailed question. The way she teaches is terrible. She skims over difficult concepts then expects you to know it. DO NOT TAKE HER.
Dont take her. The most recent reviews of her bicm 200 class are all valid. Her slides and lectures videos are not helpful and do not reflect what will be on the weekly tests. The textbook doesnt help either b/c she specifies different content for her test.
DO NOT TAKE HER!! Worst prof I have ever taken in my life so far. Her weekly quizzes are cumulative, and the questions she asks are very confusing, and it's material she skimmed over. It feels like I'm studying for a midterm every week for her quizzes. No matter how hard you try in this class, she will find a way to make you do terrible.
She grades her quizzes in a way so you get the lowest mark possible, ex: a pick how many apply and there's three right answers if you pick two right answers and one wrong, you'll get 1/3. She's the worst, not helpful at all, she wants to see you fail.
One of the worst profs ive ever had. She tests on the most specific things ever on her tests, its like she wants you to fail on purpose. She posts lecture videos that are 1 hour long, and practice quizzes, and those are not even close to enough to do well on her quizzes. She tests on stuff that she skims over maybe once and expects you to remember
Im normally a 4.0 student. I study thoroughly for every quiz and review every piece of material she gives us, yet my grade in this class is at a 2.7. A lot of my peers in this course seem to be going through a similar experience. Avoid this prof if you can, its not worth it. Bicm is an easy course, but she makes it insanely difficult.
She is not fit to teach this course at all. The material is fairly straight forward but her quiz questions are terribly worded and difficult. This class is not worth lowering your GPA. Honestly try to do this class at a different university and if you can't good luck.
Probably one of the worst professors I have ever had. She is incapable of admitting when she is in the wrong. She will provide you with hours of recorded lectures and practice questions, and all of that will STILL not be enough to answer her insanely specific questions. Please save yourself the trouble and take this class with anyone else.
During Covid (online), Nina's class was the worst. Quizzes every week worth 50% of your final grade and these quizzes are HARD. Weekly participation is worth 20%, which boosted my grade, but you can't even miss one class. Her assignments are unfair as well, first assignment had material we hadn't even covered yet. Go with another prof is possible.
Avoid, avoid, avoid! She's a definite tough grader and does not give partial markers whatsoeverbrutal. Quizzes and assignments are so much more difficult, and often unrelated to her lecture videos. She expects you to know things that are not even mentioned in the lecture! The content of the course is enjoyable. However, her execution is poor.
just dont take her lol trust
worst prof ever. she wants her students to fail. her weekly quizzes are insanely hard and half the time they cover material we were not taught. normally an A student and I was worried about failing for the first half of the semester. super unhelpful gets very defensive and can't admit she's wrong. if you can, take it with anyone else
Nina is one of my favorite professors I have had so far. She tests on information that is relevant to the class and is easy to get into contact with if you have questions. I don't know why the other comments are so negative, she does a lot in favour of the students and students' success is her top priority.
Nina's tests are super hard, and she marks decently hard as well. Sometimes feels like she wants us to fail?? Her quizzes cover material that isn't in the lecture, which is why the averages are usually quite low. She does take time to answer questions if you actually ask them, and its usually helpful. MacEwan should hire another biochem prof LOL.
nice person but I would rather have a piece of grass teach me biochem. Worst. professor. ever.
horribly structured notes. overcomplicates everything. you will spend hours slaving over her lecture videos trying to understand basic concepts/notes. quizzes are overly difficult and horribly worded. i have never left a review like this for a prof before but it was a must in this case. do not take her class. biochem is not hard unless she teaches.
Literally, don't take her, her final was horrendous it was insanely difficult for no reason. The questions were so badly worded and confusing. There was some stuff on it that she did not go over. Worst professor ever. Not worth your time, money and lowering your GPA.
our class average for exams have been extremely low so far. her unit exams are extremely difficult, it does not matter that they are open book. She has very tricky wording in the questions on her exams. I wish I paid attention to these reviews and switched out of her class.
Do NOT take her if you don't absolutely have to
Dear God! I have no idea how I survived this class. She is a very nice person but her teaching is absolute nonsense. Her test is so much harder than the material she teaches. she teaches you about hemoglobin but tests you on myoglobin. she does not give you any feedback on your assignment whatsoever and gives no partial mark. AVOID
worst prof at MacEwan and Ive taken many science courses. her expectations are extremely unreasonable because the resources are not enough to answer her questions properly. she also marks very hard.
Had her for bio 107. The test were extremely difficult even if you sat for 10-12 hours every day learning the concepts, you'll never get a 80%. Definitely do not recommend, as you would have to read a lot and the exam is extremely challenging as the materials that you'd expected would be on the exam are barely on there.
Overall the course material was easy to learn but the 4 quarter quizzes are the most difficult tests ever. They are nothing like the weekly review quizzes. These quizzes are graded heavily and are extremely difficult to even get a 70%. Spending hours studying did not help me through those quizzes either.
Absolutely horrible, study as hard as possible but it won't even matter because you can memorize everything and you'll still manage to fail. Looking for an "A" well don't even think about it, as a matter of fact don't even dream about it. The worst part about all of this is that i don't even go to McEwen, this is all based on friends stories.
Her quarter quizzes and finals arent weighed heavily (10%) and she drops a lot of questions when the class does poorly to boost your average. Shes not bad at all. If you know ur material, the exam questions test your knowledge and are worded differently. Everything is only tested on the videos no textbook at all.
Save your money and DO NOT take her class, shes a really nice person but her exams/quizzes are impossible. Please save yourself money and DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS
This course was hybrid. Lectures were pre-recorded but she held review classes every week to go over the topics. Weekly quizzes were heavily weighed and the quiz averages were usually in the 60's range. Her quizzes/exams are really hard no matter how much you study.
So lecture heavy, and expects you to know the very, very specific details about EVERYTHING. She teaches you the basics, but then expects you to know SO MUCH MORE on midterms. There's also weekly assignments that are so hard. Genuinely wish there was another BICM prof at MacEwan because I cannot take her again.
Quizzes had averages in the mid-60s same with the midterm does not really matter how much you study. It's pretty difficult to get a good grade in this class. The prof does really help, either.
I would avoid this prof. Grades extremely hard and expects you to recall every little detail
Avoid!! She does not clearly explain course material
Exams were incredibly challenging. Tested on the most minute details that were grazed over in class
BICM is a tough class, but this professor doesn't help. No clear criteria on what's examinable, so you have to remember everything. Exam averages were low, around 60%. Hard to avoid prof since she's the only BICM one at school. Many classmates feel frustrated too.
Very nice professor. Material is not difficult but she chooses to test on small details rather than most of what was taught. Coming from a straight A student, you will really really have to put in the work in this class just to do decent.
Save your money and DO NOT take her class, she's a bad person and her exams/quizzes are impossible. Please save yourself money and DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS.
THIS COURSE ITSELF IS DIFFICULT MATERIAL BUT NINA IS NOT THE WORST PROF I HAVE HAD. SHE IS VERY CARING AND SUPER NICE AND ALTHOUGH HER MATERIAL MAY BE A LOT, ITS MAINLY BECAUSE THE COURSE ITSELF IS A LOT.
I know a lot of people have bad reviews for Nina, but I found her to be decent. She is always willing to help you during office hours and answers emails quickly. She explains everything you need to know for exams, but you need to be able to APPLY what she teaches you. As long as you review frequently and put in the effort, you will do well.
The class was unexpectedly challenging for a 200-level course. Nina, however, was not particularly helpful in clarifying the material and insisted that everything on the exam was fair, which seemed unreasonable. Her perspectives on certain political issues also raised some eyebrows among students.
If you think you have a bad gpa, this class will make it worse. She confuses herself and everyone else. Macwan needs to get it together, and hire another prof because for a required course, this is insane. Literally woke up in the mornings hoping she would cancel class. Rather have my three-legged cat teach BICM.
THE WORST PROF EVER! I usually get A's as an honours student (not to brag), but this class made me rethink my decision to be in an honours programme. She made it a point on the first day of class that her exams were fair, which, if you have to do that, then you're probably lying to yourself and everyone else.
Nina is not a terrible prof, this course just has so much material to cover which makes it objectively difficult. Nina is always accessible to answer questions on exams/quizes/assignments. She does post videos to help reaffirm what is learned in class. People who said her exams are unfair simply didn't review material appropriately. Just study.
To whoever wrote Nina Bernstein's rating on Nov 21st, 2025, take it down. I know who you are, and I am in your class. Don't lie to these people...
I have her for a 300 level BICM course and let me warn you, if you think she's tough for BICM 200, she's even worse for BICM 340. There were only 9 people in our class and she is pressuring to take a 400 level with her because there's only 5 people enrolled in that class. TRY TO AVOID IF YOU CAN!
I dont even know where to begin. Her exams are super unfair and is nothing like the practice midterms and questions you see that she posts. She also marks super hard and takes marks off for sig digs like who in their right mind would do that. If I could give her a 0 I would. Her notes has literally no words in them and they're just diagrams.
I liked Nina as a prof and I think a lot of her ratings are unfair. This class has a lot of content to cover, you need to put in effort and study. She was always helpful when I had a question, literally just ask for help.
