Great teacher, too bad he's gone
HE'S GONE?!!! His class: lot's of video and John Stossell.
Great professor, sets clear expectations and makes the material fun to learn
Great guy; great prof. He actually taught simultaneously at my former highschool. I think he spoke at graduation 6 yrs running? Sad to see him go...
Really great teacher!!! likes using john stossel videos. I had him in high school too, really great guy, too bad he went back to school!!
Ninos is a great teacher. Had him for both Micro and Macro Economics. Very clear on what he wants. Makes class exciting and worth going too. Good relationship with students as well.
This class was very stressful for me. I think it would have been much better for me if the material was organized differently. His lectures were useful although I was never sure what to study or focus on since he has videos, the textbooks, his own notes, the web (aplia) homework and another supplement book. And the textbook was horrible..
Took both his 1A and 1B classes in fall 2006. Real easy if you do the readings he assigns and show up to class and take notes. All exams multiple choice, and he dropped the lowest midterm exam. Also, all his notes and assignments are available at the start of the semester. The people that say his classes are hard are just lazy + didn't do the work.
I took both 1A & 1B. He is a great teacher, charismatic and definitely likes this subject. He opened my eyes to the world around me. I would definitely take him again. Do the reading, attend class and show up for the tests and do Aplia. He will give extra points at the end of the semester!
I had Ninos for entry-level Macro. He knows the subject very well and makes his lectures lucid and engaging. He does give off a noticeable libertarian vibe when he teaches, but he sticks with positive economics for the most part. Anyone that's willing to put in the effort can and will get a good grade in the class.
He is so freaking awesome! like freaking awesome, like what the freak would we do if freaking malek wasnt here in this freakin world! what a freakin miracle!! like really? reeeally? his arms are freaking huge and his head a shining light of wisdom!!
Awesome teacher! probably the best teacher I've had. Tests were decent, drops a grade, and has the biggest curve I've ever seen. His teaching strategies and examples that come along with them are very interesting. easy B
His classes involve a lot of reinforcements on every topic that really helps to retain basics forever. His style of teaching (incorporating videos, internet readings etc) encourages a student to naturally use Economics as a way of life. Really appreciate all that he does to make Economics a very easy subject to learn.
By far the best Econ instructor I have ever had, he effectively conveys the subject using an engaging teaching methodology that transcends spending months looking over endless models.
one the best teachers i have ever had. like econ and can teachy it to his students very well. i think its his big shiney head that attracts your attention to him. very good. take his class
Makes things very easy for you. Drops your lowest of 4 quizzes. 1 6-8 page paper. I had to attend every week and skim through the text book to make sure I understood stuff but some people may pick up economics better. Total libertation but tries to cover it up. Lot's of Stossel videos. Paper topics are a bit right-leaning.
Easy class after taking Econ 1A. He's funny and made class entertaining! I wish he made his own exams instead of using premade ones from the book and other sources.
Excellent example of a quality professor. Can't emphasize how crystal clear and engaging his lectures were. That said, his tests aren't freebies and make you use the economic way of thinking.learned plenty in this class glad I did not choose an easy professor.4 tests,drops1,aplia,and HUGE final worth a whopping 50%. only negative final worth too much.
lolfunny how he tries to hide his political views but clearly obvious hes a conservative/libertarian.often says about issues"whether thats good or bad, thats up to you to decide"cmon ninos, you know you want to force your political views on us and whats good and whats bad.I hated the fact that he didn't share what he thinks because he's knowledgeable
All of Ninos' 4 exams are multiple choice. There are no short answers or essays, and he drops the lowest test, so that's pretty nice. In order to pass his exams, one has to read the material and show up to class. It's not too hard. He lets you keep your exams, and he returns your scantron the following class session. I'd take him if I were you.
One of the best teachers I have ever had. I just transfered from community college and let me tell you. This prof is what every student should have because he explains the material sooo well. Not an easy A but if you do the work, not only that you will pass the class but also with a confident of understanding the way things works in the real world.
Very interesting teacher who relates economics to real life situations. Drops lowest test score, which helps out a lot, and all the tests are straight forward. Not an easy class, really makes you work for it. I've seen the other economics classes being taught and students are falling asleep in there, you'll be wide awake and attentive with Ninos.
Ninos is one of th ebest econ teachers at SJSU. I took his class during summer and he said the workload was fast and hard, but it was relaxed and easy. 4 easy test (drops the lowest grade), 1 final, 1 essay, and aplia is all that count towards your grade. not only is the class interesting and not very difficult, Ninos is a really cool & funny
He kept the class interesting and entertaining. You will learn a lot about real issues. There is a lot of reading, but if you cover all the material you will be fine for the exams.
The best! Lectures are crystal clear and entertaining, the readings (especially the textbook) are surprisingly fun, and his exams are easy. All multiple choice and he drops your lowest score. Grades the paper very leniently; if you follow his format you'll get an A. Highly recommended!
He's one of the best Econ professors I've ever had. He teaches you how to think like an economist. He's attractive (which is a plus) and he's extremely helpful and passionate about the subject. He gives off a libertarian vibe, but it's not forceful. And I believe I have more libertarian views thanks to him.
Effective lessons for non-Economic majors; simple for those Economic (naturally). Carefully regard: test material does not directly reflect that of the textbook, Aplia, or lectures. Meaning: to do well, look to outside resources/references. Lectures are important (also entertaining).
Took him this past semester. Knowledgable and shows a genuine interest in the success of students. Effectively taught the material. The exams were challenging and worded a bit tricky, but he may allow for open notes or book, and there is a review session before each one. Great class for anybody passionate about Economics.
Ninos is a very helpful and understanding professor who knows everything he talks about to the T. He grades reasonably enough for most people to pass and his lectures were so intriguing I was always sure never to skip a class (considering that my class only met only once a week). His testing methods, though, could be more varied in terms of format.
Good teacher. Ask questions if you don't understand. He is good at making the material relatable to real life situations that everyone can understand. Gives notes that give a basic outline of the class. Read the chapters around the notes and you will do fine.
Ninos is the man! He is a great professor and is very straight forward. He doesn't like to mess around and dives straight into lectures. He will not waste your time. As far as grading goes, it is quite fair. He gave us one take home exam and at the end of the semester replaced our lowest test score with our grade we received on the final.
Such a good professor. He is crystal clear on his teaching of economics and I hated economics before I had him. I recommend taking him if you do not like economics, he will definitely make it easy for you to understand. Just do the reading. He offers 4 tests not including the final and knocks out the lowest grade for one test. Great professor!
The BEST economics teacher i've ever taken! I took his night class, and I usually never stay awake and try to avoid night classes....but Ninos proved me wrong! If you fail, it's your fault, but overall very clear, concise, and teaches what you need to know without all the fluff. Recommend!
An amazing professor. Knows a lot about economics, however his class is not easy. There are 4 tests and a final. He drops a test, but they are very hard. He gives two take home and two in class. Beware of the in class tests. Study the book! Also the online homework will kill your grade. Has nothing to do with the lectures or the book.
He is very nice and funny. take him!
Best professor I've had at SJSU, period.
Best Professor in this planet!!!! this universe! Absoluatly take his class, otherwise you will be regret for your entire life !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great professor. Knows his stuff. Basically, there are 4 tests and a final, with some online hw. He drops one test, and the others are 10% each, with 10% HW and 60% final. He says you have to read or you won't pass, and that is true for many, but I didn't read and got an A. He'll cover most things in the lecture.
Im surprised by all the good comments for him. WORST 6PM NIGHT CLASS ever! if you cant sit through a 3 hour class. dont take him. He is very bad at responding. Never ever gotten a reply to any of my questions and concerns since the very beginning of class. Hard grader on essays and talks about non-text book related subjects in class, intimidating.
Dr. Vin Diesel! He is clear and gives everyday life examples using economics. It will change the way you think.
Professor malek is one of the coolest professors I've bee met! His teaching methods and hilarious relatable examples mould your thinking into an economic way of thinking. Took the class over summer; 4 hour class, but loved it! Wish he taught during the fall and spring too! Tests are very hard and final is almost 60% of your grade
Great professor! He actually makes you think about your perspective or point of view of the decisions you make in life. Gives you plenty of time for the take home test. There's only 5 pop Quizzes in total. If you READ and pay attention to his lectures you'll do fine. He's definitely not those boring professors, actually worth taking.
Class consists of 5 pop quizzes, 25 points each lowest one being dropped, 4 tests, 100 points each lowest being dropped, 1 paper for 100 points, homework 100 points, and the final which is 400 points. Overall the class was quite interesting and I am glad I took it, just wished I had prepared a little more for the final so I could have got an A.
Overall he was a great teacher and made the class really fun and interesting. His lectures were long but made jokes often and used real life examples. There is a lot of homework , 5 pop quizzes, 5 take home tests (he drops 1 quiz and test), 4 essays, and a final which is 40% of your total grade. Understand the material and ask questions.
Dr. Malek is hella cool. His lectures are interesting even though they are 3 hours long on a tuesday night. Grade is based on 4 pop quizzes, 4 take home midterms, online my econ lab hw, and the final. Legit take this class. The take home midterms are easy but the final is a little hard if you don't pay attention or study.
Best class I have taken. He is funny, but very knowledgeable. He makes learning Econ fun with his real world examples which also helps everything make sense. And the best part is as long as you do the reading and show up to class it's an easy A. Easy A + you learn a lot. Perfect class to take.
I took Professor Malek for Econ1A in my first semester as a Freshman and I can easily say that it was one of the easier classes I took. He makes it clear that in order to pass his class with a B or above, all you need to do is show up to class. He gives lectures and gives pop quizzes after the lectures. His tests (except final) are take home.
This is a MUST take Professor! Easy A if you listen to class AND READ TEXTBOOK! quizes and exams are all based on books and his lecture. Very attractive lecture and very approachable person! MUST TAKE!
Definitely a great professor! His lectures are super entertaining and he relates things back to real life. Make sure you pay attention!
Best professor EVER!! Very clear on what he expects from us, and what to be expected from him. His real life examples helped the material stick. Humorous. Very passionate about econ. Summer class was long, but he kept us engaged and entertained. 3 tests & a final- fairly easy & straightforward. I don't write reviews, but I knew I had to for him.
Had the opportunity to take Malek for 1A, 1B and 101. Everything is pretty straightforward, from the first day of class he lays out the expectations. All I can say is that you get out whatever effort you put into the course. I was able to see new perspectives on issues that were never offered to me in any of my previous courses.
Professor Malek is one of the best professors that the Economics Department at SJSU has to offer. Professor Malek is engaging and forces you to challenge your preconceptions on real world issues. Professor Malek is hilarious and made a three hour course feel like one. I wish he taught more upper division economics courses.
He has great lectures, you learn something new every class. He tends to repeat himself a lot. He is very straightforward and you are graded on few things.
Dr. Malek is the king of microeconomics. Very funny and gives many relatable examples of how this subject can be applied in the real world. He has 5 tests in total, 4 being the take-home tests, and 1 being the in-class final. Be consistent in your studying and the final will be a breeze
Malek was a great professor. He covers some of the lectures in class, but most of what he teaches is already on his site, so if you miss a class you can catch up. Test are all take home and understandable as long as you do the readings he assigns. Not the toughest class but make sure to study well for the final which is in class.
For the summer of 2017 where his class was 3 hours long, it didn't feel long at all. In fact I wish I get to listen to him longer. He changed my view of the world with his videos on Jon Stossel and his lectures. I wished he was in SJSU for spring and fall so I can recommend him to my friends and to all of you. Taking him I felt ready for any class.
Ninos is the best professor that I've ever had, period. His lectures are engaging, his tests and quizzes are easy to pass so long as you show up to class and do the reading, and he is all around great at his job. He will change the way that you view the world!
I had a night class, but he's hilarious and makes his lectures interesting. His tests are all take home and most of the answers can be found online. Also, he looks exactly like Vin Diesel.
He's fantastic. He's super relatable which makes his connections to the material really easy to understand. Four take home tests and the final. The hardest thing about the class was having to write four papers, but after all, as long as you just completed it and turned all four in, he gave everyone who did 100%.
Great Teacher. Learned a lot from him. Pay attention in class and you'll be good! He's a really funny and entertaining guy its amazing
Malek was really good at teaching. He reinforces a lot of stuff that you might already know. His class consists of like 4 tests that he posts online and you can use any resources to pass those tests. The only in-class test you take is the final (so you better know your stuff by then).
As long as you show up to class and do all the readings you will do good on the final. 4 take home tests . 4 short papers due at the end, graded very easy on it and most people got A for the paper.
We had a take home test for each chapter (all answers online). 4 essays tnd he chose 1 that he'll grade, but do them all and you'll get an A. Never read/studied any of the info he told us to n for the final i just remembered the answers to the previous tests the day prior and passed with a B. he says u wont pass if u dont study/come to class but...
Ninos is a great guy and I really enjoyed his lectures, but due to the COVID 19 situation we went online and he put no effort. He started to email us tests and answers making the class very simple. I have nothing against that as it makes it easier for students to pass, but he made us study by watching youtube vids and that makes the class not worth
Prof. Malek is one of those rare professors whos able to excite his students with his lectures. Despite working a fulltime job and commuting 1.5 hours after work to attend his lectures, they always left me feeling inspired/energized. He did his best to provide us with great online learning material during COVID, and its unfair to claim otherwise.
Total of 5 tests throughout the semester, the final which is the 5th test is 60% of your grade so it's crucial that you study for it. Very chill and easy-going cracks a bunch of jokes during class which makes time goes by fast, a 3-hour long class seems like only 1.
Taking a 3 hour night class can be tiring but his lectures were interesting and hilarious, making the concepts easy to understand. No homework but there are 4 essays (he only grades 1) and 5 easy take home tests. Final is 50% of your grade but study his notes and previous tests and you will do well!
Dr. Malek is one of the best professors I've had. He's clear and precise. Even though this was an on-line class he took the time to lay out the schedule and communicated through email numerous times as what the expectation was. There is no excuse not to do well if you follow his guidelines. He's more than fair and leaves the politics out.
Professor Malek is straightforward in course guidelines; he is strict and lacks an understanding of students' well-being. He does not accept excuses for late work or test-taking, whether it be internet issues or family issues. He did not offer live lectures, only prerecorded zooms and youtube videos for studying and lectures, and textbook heavy.
I was excited to take Economics since Professor Malek had a high score on here... I was disappointed. I didn't learn much from this class and would pass on his attitude. He isn't lenient about the coursework even though we are in a global pandemic
Professor Malik was overall an amazing teacher, He was very upfront from the beginning of the course. He laid everything out for you and is very specific. Don't be fooled by reviews claiming he isn't lenient, he literally allowed 2 days to complete exams with no time limit. Awesome guy who shows his compassion for Economics through his teaching.
Dr. Malek is extremely flexible in teaching an online course. Textbook & MyEconLab access required for the course. Consistent with emails and material he assigns. Reading the textbook is very important. Exam policy is flexible: two full days to do an exam, open notes. Gradebook consists of three exams (drops the lowest score), and one final exam.
All online. He gives you all the videos to watch and chapters to read. I watched videos on 2x speed. TBH I barely read the textbook cause I took AP Micro in high school. 3 exams 1 final. He drops the lowest exam. I literally googled every question on his exams and quizlet has them. Got a 90% on final this way. He makes it clear no late exams.
3 midterms + 1 final exam. No homework and just exams. No pressure in his class.
Listen to other good comments. You will not regret to take his online econ 101 class.
There is no homework given, at least for a grade. Your grade is based on 5 tests and a final. However, he drops your 2 lowest test grades. because of this, he doesn't allow any make-up tests period. The only downside is that the final is worth 50% of your grade, so it is really make or break
The professor is approachable, and this class is one of the easiest classes I have.
Professor Ninos Malek is VERY straight forward and will make his expectations very clear to you. He does not accept any late tests! There are 5 tests and 1 final, 2 of your lowest tests are dropped. There is a lot of reading but the tests aren't too hard considering they make up your whole grade. If you have to take ECON1A pick this professor!
5 exams, 1 paper, and 1 final. Drops the lowest 2 exams but no makeup exams what so ever. Exams are multiple choice and online. Usually his finals are 90 multiple choice in person but this semester, he switched it to 10 open ended questions. Gave us a study guide of what questions he would select. No graded weighting scale.
For the class, there are 5 tests then a final test, where he will drop 2 of the lowest grades out of the 5 tests. Half of your grade is from the tests and the other half is from the final. You get 2 extra credit opportunities one at the beginning of the semester and one towards the end. Lots of reading, but you learn a lot overall in the class
Listen to other reviews! He was a great lecturer and always made class funny and interesting, would definitely take again!
Take this professor. Lectures are easy, just have to pay attention. He does advise you to read a lot, but if you stay on top it, you will be fine. Doesn't really assign assignments throughout the semester, except for 5 tests, a writing assignment, and the final.
Malek is fine. The only graded items for the summer class were the 4 exams. There is few lectures and most of your learning will come from reading the material. You have to be careful with the exams as some questions were worded tricky.
Dr Malek is a very good person. He is super direct, there is nothing to question or make excuses about. The way he taught me and my peers how to view the world through an economic lens is powerful. He is yet the only professor in past 3 years, who offers viewpoints that goes against the binary. Take him if you want to expand your world view/mind!
Dr Malek makes his expectations clear from the jump and he provides many resources to his students to put them in the best position possible. He responds to emails and helps during class as well. He has 5 tests and 1 final for this class with entertaining lectures. The best way to succeed in this class is to attend class AND do the readings.
Professor Malek was a fantastic teacher! He has very interesting and fun lectures, but make sure to show up to class for them as he teaches stuff in class that you'll need for tests and finals. No homework other than reading he assigns (not required) which also helps for the final. Pay attention and you'll ace the class! Definitely take him!
Dr. Malek is funny and his class will shape the way u think about econ. A lot of assigned reading. If you use the study guide and show up to class, you'll pass the exam. 1,000 point class: 600 points for final, 5 tests (drops 2 of the 5 tests, each test is 100 points), 100 point essay. You will have to spend around $80-100 for myeconlab.
If you need to take econ take this prof! He makes the material so easy to understand and that too with NO math! Hilarious professor and definitely has made me love economics. All tests were online on Mylabmastering and the worst one will be dropped. He also offers extra-credit for that slight boost if you still need it! 100% recommend.
His class was fun and easy.
Honestly, Ninos is a ok teacher overall. His class was easy, but he gave me a rly hard time when it came to family emergencies or being sick. He is not at all understanding in that aspect. I was full on stressing at the end of the grading period since he didn't help not even a single bit when I had asked for guidance for the circumstances I was in.
Great professor! Lectures are always interesting and worth to listen to.
Great lectures, visual teacher. Tests are straightforward and covers content spoken about in lectures. Great teacher and class highly recommend
In 8 weeks we got two lectures from him that are just previous lectures of his, from a different class. The rest of the instruction we got was about 20 emails tell us to watch the YouTube playlist which many of the videos had broken links. He is the laziest professor I have ever taken. If you want to learn anything don't take him.
Chill professor. His lectures are very interesting and if you read the required pages in the textbooks, you will gain a decent understanding of course content. The entire course's content can be learned in a week or two if you really tried by reading, but his lectures provide great marginal extra info. Overall, great professor for an intro course.
Very easy going teacher, No papers, No projects just a few online quizzes throughout the semester.
Dr. Malek's lectures were super entertaining even though lecture was long!! He really made it easier to understand econ. Like everyone says, there are 5 exams and they're pretty easy as long as you read what he assigns which were eye opening. He's a nice professor too. he gave us all a 100% on the last test :)).
Very easy course. Just go to lectures, pay attention, and don't skip assigned readings. There are 5 tests, 2 of which grades are dropped at the end of the course, and a final. No homework at all. Tests are 50% of your grade and the final accounts for 50%. Loved that he never gave us busy work and just got straight to the point while being engaging.
Dr. Malek is definitely the best Econ Professor at SJSU. His lectures are so engaging, and he makes the class fun at the same time. He is also very chill and straightforward. He grades the top 3 of 5 tests that you have, and the final is pretty cool too. Definitely take him!
Hands down best economics professor at SJSU. The only way to fail this course is if you don't go to class, not read the assigned chapters, or literally do nothing. You could tell that he really wanted his students to succeed and made lectures interesting and entertaining. I heard from a friend that he played Dom in Fast & Furious as well.
Made a mundane topic really interesting. Went straight to the point. My previous professor made me hate economics, but his lectures made me really engaged. He is very clear about the syllabus and will not take any excuses, so if you regularly have special circumstances or issues, find another professor. Otherwise, great and fair professor, def rec.
Great speaker and really passionate about Econ. If you don't enjoy reading, don't take this class since reading is a big part in learning the content. Very thorough on expectations. Not much graded work in the end, so make sure to do well on the few writing assignments, and study for the exams/final exam. Class is easy if you make time for it.
Great informative lectures in learning about how ECON applies to our lives. Professor Malek makes real life connects that allows students to grasp on to material. Gives 5 exams on MyEcon Lab, drops 2, gives extra credit however reading the textbooks is important! I loved his sense of humor and fun connections to the topics. Great Professor take him
This class is incredibly easy if you show up, listen, and take notes. There's plenty of reading, but it's just there to reinforce the lecture material. Aside from a few important topics in the main textbook, you could probably get an A just by attending every class session and reviewing notes. The online textbook was over a hundred dollars.
Professor Malek is a great lecturer, his class is 3 hours long but he makes it pretty entertaining. Just show up and pay attention to the lecture, you should be good. There is 2 book and a testing website which is over $100. No homework but there is a lot of reading and watching videos. Overall, Great professor and I would 100% recommend.
Professor Malek is an engaging lecturer who makes economics easy to understand. With tests that cover lecture content and opportunities for extra credit, the class is manageable. The textbook is helpful, and Unstuckstudy can provide additional study support.
Really chill and entertaining lectures, just know that tests/quizzes make up almost all of your grade. Five online, two of your worst get dropped. Final worth 60%. a lot of it is just learning the economic way of thinking and applying that to the questions. Easy class and great professor !!
Absolutely terrible
Very good and knowledgeable. Great guy.
His class was ALWAYS engaging. You can tell he loves what he's doing and really wants his students to get something out of his class. We learn a lot about REAL economics and his lectures are worth going to, even though attendance isn't mandatory. There were 5 midterms (online), 2 get dropped, and the final exam (in-person). Worth your Fridays.
Great professor that is both engaging and informative. There is no homework and the class is graded just from exams. Textbooks are provided and he drops two exams. He has a zero tolerance sick or emergency policy and will not allow any make-ups or extensions, so keep that in mind. Overall, he made economics fun and was very informative!
The exams are hard as hell but they are online, open book and at home which is why they are difficult. He also gives you like two days to take the exams. 4 exams, Final, and Essay. No group projects. He's a really great professor and really educated, you can ask him anything. You will learn a lot. Take him!
The grade is based on exams, with half of the grade determined by the best 3/5 tests throughout the semester (open-book & online) and the other half by a final exam. He is a great professor and makes class interesting, but personally, I would not take him again because it's very lecture-heavy & your grade is greatly impacted by the final.
Ninos is funny and has interesting lectures. Don't be fooled by this. Majority of "learning" will come from reading the 3 books he requires. He's always late to class, so he doesn't have time to finish his lectures and leaves you to read the books at home. That's if you have time after the "homework" of watching videos and reading more articles.
very straightforward guy but knows what he's talking about. I took it online, and it was very easy. Just be ready to write a lot and read a lot, but tbh you don't need to read it all. Everything is open note since it is online. I recommend!
Super engaging class, you can get away with just showing up to lectures and not doing the reading. He's really funny and is clearly passionate about what he's teaching. His class is almost primarily graded on tests, though, so make sure you study really well.
