solid choice for chem 1
I hated chemistry in high school and thought I would for sure fail it in college, but Dr. K is AMAZING! She is very helpful and gives out extra credit opportunities. She is very straight forward about exam content and gives practice worksheets to help you prepare. Best gen chem professor.
Dr. K is a great teacher and does plenty of examples in class. She also is very accessible outside of class and was a great gen chem 1 professor. Highly recommend.
I LOVE THIS GIRLLLL. She ate the chem 1 class uppp. Please take her if you can you'll love her she is so sweet and amazing and makes class fun.
Simply amazing. Dr. Kurapati is a must take for non-STEM majors interested in chemistry or for gen chem 1. Best professor at Pitt.
Dr. K is an amazing professor! She is so sweet and kind, you could tell she genuinely cared about her students and wanted them to pass. Her exams were a little tricky but you'll be fine if you go to her office hours or TA's office hours, she doesn't throw curveballs on exams either. She gives LOTS of examples in class. Overall I recommend her!
Dr. K is a new professor so her slides were constantly off or did not contain enough information, which was annoying. She is a really nice woman however, her teaching was questionable. Multiple times every single class she would mess problems up and students would constantly need to help her. However, she is one of the easier gen chem 1 profs.
She was very nice and kind, just not a great professor. She's inexperienced, so her slides were rough, she gave practice problems rather than really taught (and very often made mistakes), her tests were too long, but she gave good review sheets. Only recommend if you're good at Chem/took AP Chem, otherwise you'll struggle. Learned more from my TA.
She's a nice person, but not a good professor. She made so many mistakes in class and students would have to correct her. Attend lectures because the slides are horrible and don't make sense if you don't show up. She had 3 exams that were fine if you reviewed, but the final is ACS and it is nothing like the exams she gave. Totally not fair.
Dr. Kurapati is a new professor and as a result her lectures were very unorganized and she often made mistakes and relied on students to correct her. If you get three problems wrong on an exam you're already at a almost a C for that exam. Go to lecture because her slides make no sense. Go to your recitation because your TA will help.
Very sweet person, but this was her first semester teaching, so her lectures were often disorganized. That being said, she gives lots of examples in class, and her practice exams are pretty similar to the actual exams. She is also very accessible outside of class, and gives extra credit opportunities. Overall, a solid choice for Gen Chem 1.
She's really sweet, but she's inexperienced. Makes a lot of mistakes in lectures. Her exams are straightforward and don't have a lot of curveballs, but if you get 2 questions wrong you're already at a B... Honestly, she was a pretty good choice for gen chem 1, especially because Pitt's chem professors kinda suck
Dr. K was really nice! Her lectures were definitely a little disorganized and she messed up on some practice problems, but she taught material similar to the exams and made practice exams for extra help. She taught in a way that made it a bit easier to understand what we were doing. She's probably the best choice for Chem 1.
Lectures at times were disorganized and mistakes were made but she's a fair professor. Extra credit is limited but available. Attendance isn't mandatory but you should go. Slides are posted online but going into detail and doing the work for the math problems are done only in lectures.
It was Dr. Kurapati's first year teaching, so slides and lectures were a little disorganized. Most of class is spent going over example problems, and she is very clear with what we need to know for tests and quizzes. The review worksheets are very similar to what is on the actual exam. Class prepares very well for the ACS final exam.
I loved Dr. K, considering it was her first semester teaching she did an amazing job. Exams were not too difficult, as long as you study. Fantastic, nice, and very understanding professor.
Considering that this was her first semester teaching, I really enjoyed her class. The class was not hard to succeed in if you showed up to lecture and used her study materials as well as studying on your own. There's definitely some things she could improve on, but overall she was a pretty engaging lecturer and easy to approach.
Dr K is a knowledgeable professor and is very sweet. Her teaching abilities are limited and lectures are not put together well. The exams were difficult with only 15 questions and no partial credit. More than two questions wrong resulted in a B, so make sure you study using a lot of practice problems. She is one of the better gen chem professors.
Although it was her first year of teaching, I liked Dr. Kurapati's class. During lectures, she would often make little mistakes and sometimes slides were disorganized, however she is a very caring and understanding professor. You are sure to succeed in her class if you put the time and effort into the course.
Dr. K was a pretty nice teacher however since new it was mirrored in class. Mistakes made during practice problems and would have to be corrected. Ask all your questions in recitation. Class has 3 tests and the ACS final. The test reviews she posts are similar to the tests she gives out. Overall, not a bad teacher to take for a gen chem 1 class.
Dr.Kurapati is a genuinely nice teacher and she cares about her students and will work with you to make sure you do well in the class. Her class is not overly difficult and her tests are relatively straightforward and similar to the practice tests she posts.
LITERALLY FOULL. Such an awful professor. She was so incredibly disorganized and made so many errors during lecture. Would give us practice problems but never post the work for them on the slides. Would assign ALEKS modules, but would never teach you what was going on in the modules, which made it so difficult to actually complete them.
Dr. K was a great professor! She started pretty nervous and unsure of herself. Her lectures were initially a little disorganized, but as the course went on she improved a lot. Her lectures became better to follow and she offered several examples in class and held lots of office hours. For her first time teaching, she did great!
Dr. K was my favorite professor. She is so caring and always willing to explain difficult ideas. Go to her office hours if you ever have any questions! She is very easy to reach.
For it being her first year teaching I think she did a great job. At times she would make mistakes during problems, but nothing you can't figure out the answer to on your own! She is very caring and wants her students to succeed. Also, the practice exams are VERY similar to the tests which was very helpful. I recommend taking her class!
Great choice for a Chem 1 professor! Has info-heavy lectures but explains things well. She is funny during lecture too. The weekly homework was a pain, but if you don't put it off until the last second, it's not hard. A lot depends on the TA you get (Grace is a great option). 3 exams and a final- if you study and do the practice exams you're set.
Dr. Kurapati was a pretty good teacher. Her lectures are interesting but sometimes unclear. Participation isn't required, but she sometimes does in class questions graded by participation. There's a homework set every week that covers things that were sometimes not taught yet, so you may have to teach yourself some topics to finish the homework.
She was an okay teacher but the main thing I didnt like is that her exams have multiple choice questions that are worth 6 points each, and you dont get partial credit. I also hate ALEKS for homework because it does not help you learn the material. But As long as you study the test are pretty simple and she does offer extra credit sometimes.
She made a lot of mistakes during lecture, her slides make no sense unless you are in class actually hearing her explain her slides, and there were numerous times I went to office hours and she either wouldn't be there or would say she has to leave and would be back in "like an hour" which is basically the entirety of her office hours!? nice but...
Only gave 50 mins on exams when our section was an hour and 15 mins long. She will just leave during office hours for a meeting or will just not be there. Exams and quizzes were easy, but the amount of the mistakes made on them by her and also during lecture is just honestly unacceptable. She is okay at best.
I honestly do not have anything bad to say about her. She is super nice and accomodating. I will say she can be hard to reach outside of class so I would ask questions in person. Exams weren't too difficult compared to other Gen Chem 1 teachers. It is her 2nd semester teaching so she is still trying to sort everything out. I recommend this class!
This was my second time taking chem 1 so I can say that compared to the other professors, she's easily one of the best. She closely follows the textbook which makes her class easy to follow. Quizzes are pretty easy and exams are more diffcult, .but still doable. Doing well in this class requires work, but is very doable if you study and understand.
Dr. Kurapati has been one of the newer professors here and despite her occasionally disorganized teaching style, she does mean well. There is a lot of homework on Aleks, but it is only 5% of your grade. Most of the UTAs are a lot more helpful since her office hours are janky. Learn how to study because the quiz and exam grades will catch up to you.
Best choice for Chem 1. Chem is meant to be a weed out, but Dr. K makes learning the material easy. Aleks takes a lot of time, but every professor has that so it's not her fault. 3 exams that aren't bad and the final is curved. No drops. You also have to go to lecture to get the notes cause annotated slides with the examples aren't uploaded.
All work is done during the lecture and her notes to solving the problems in the slides are never posted. She assigns ALEKS for homework, which will take hours to do and often does not relate to what you are doing in class. Exams will have multiple errors in them which costs you. Final is a standardized test 70 questions long that everyone fails.
Very new to teaching. During lecture would get practice problems wrong and be corrected by students. Exams would have multiple errors which would be corrected during testing. Final is a 70-question standardized test that has a average of 50%. ALEKS is assigned for homework and usually doesn't relate to what you are learning.
Adequately prepares you for exams which require minimal studying, covers everything you need to know for the final ACS exam, new professor but all around easy course and great option!
Dr. K is very kind and means well, but makes too many mistakes during lecture and way too many on exams (and you don't receive compensation in return for HER mistakes). I understand she is still new to teaching, but when students find more errors than things correct, then something needs to change. Also is sometimes inaccessible out of class.
As someone who had to retake chem, she is much better than my previous option. Dr. K cares about her students and does not make it extremely difficult to succeed. If you are someone who is retaking the course, I would strongly advise you to take it with Dr. K. The exams can be somewhat challenging, but definitely not unreasonable.
Niraja Kurapati was a great chem professor. She was funny and made a pretty mundane subject bearable. However, she wrote most of her lectures on a sheet of paper in class, so if you weren't in class you wouldn't know what the actual lectures meant. A good bit of the class you learn in ALEKS first, then in class.
Kurapati is hard to reach and reads off a powerpoint, giving literally no insight into the class. Her exams are pretty easy but aside from that she is pretty much a terrible teacher in every sense of the word. She also drops exams for some people and not others with literally NO logic behind it.
Dr K is very kind and was very accessible outside class, I struggled and her office hours helped me a lot! She does a pretty good job during lectures, sometimes confusing but was open to feedback
Dr. K is a very genuine professor, but her lectures were boring at times. The exams were fair but sometimes a little tricky. She would do practice problems during lecture which helped and the lecture slides were kind of just there for the sake of being there. 3 midterms, 1 final which is curved, and weekly ALEKS which was good practice.
Does not post the grades in full at the end of the semester, go to her office hours if you need help, messes up her exams sometimes, ALEKS is only 80% of your grade, just do not take her 8am class
Dr. K is the best professor you can take for chem 1. So kind and genuinely wants to see you succeed. Her exams are exactly like her practice worksheets, so do them and ask questions if you have them, and you will do fine on her exams. Do the ALEKS, test questions can come from there. She does test level questions in class, so go to class!
QUEEN!! I just love Dr. K. She is adorable and super funny once you get her going. Love her comedic timing in lecture as well. I already took chem 2 yrs in HS so this class was EZ, but she was more than willing to help me one-on-one with learning some trickier concepts I hadn't seen before. I think she's a good prof, still super new. Great person.
Lectures seemed all over the place at times and felt like there was some miscommunication between TAs and the professors. Not my favorite
I unfortunately had to take chem 1 twice but both times were with her and I honestly don't regret it. easiest chem professor, exams are pretty simple if you do the practice. Lots of Ta's (like a lot) and decently accessible outside of class. Few extra credit opportunities and the final (ACS) is curved by up to 20 points if needed, I recommend!! !!!
Her tests were hard but if you pay attention in recitation and solve ALEKS you should do well. This is my 2nd time taking chem 1 and she was such a good lecturer. Highly recommend. Exams are worth 60% in total(15% each)but aleks is just 5% so you need to do well in every exam and final as no exam is dropped. But good class if you put in the work
She's a really good professor and explains well. Graded on 3 exams and the ACS final all weighted the same, aleks homework, recitation quizzes, tophat participation, and lab. You don't have to go to lectures because she posts the notes on canvas
cant even say anything
Her practice tests given before exams were nearly identical to her exams so definitely do those. She curved tests and gave extra credit and was a very fair grader. Also, her grading was evenly spread. For example, an exam was only 15% of your grade, so if you did bad on one exam you're able to bring your grade up.
Ms. Kurapati was a nice and caring professor. She was fairly difficult but if you study enough you will be fine. She is a fair grader and I would 100% take this class again.
amazing teacher, very prepared so much enthusiasm!
THE BEST GEN CHEM PROFESSOR HANDS DOWN. If you can choose one, choose her.
I took Dr. K after failing gen chem 1 the semester before. I had absolutely no confidence that I would be able to pass. Dr. K was such a good prof. she was patient, kind, and willing to help at office hours or in lecture. She is so good litterally dont take anyone else!!!!!
This is my 3rd semester taking her. I'm in chem 2 now. I took her for chem1 2x lol (my fault) shes fair, sweet and kind. She gets messy but go through the slides, practice. go to office hours and you're ok. exams are 14-16 questions lowkey lightwork if you follow along in class. it's lightwork if you do your best to follow along bc she does messup
She's nice but still very new. she messes up the problems in class A LOT. like, every time. people constantly have to correct her math and she's been known to mess up on exams as well. her tests also are too long/take too long and most of the class will be scrambling to finish. suffice to say I will be retaking chem 2 lol
I loved Dr. K! After having a not-so-ideal Chem 1 experience at Pitt, I was super nervous going into Chem 2. Honestly, her lectures are good and easy to follow. There are many practice problems in class, and the quizzes are pretty simple and I often got 100%. She prepares you pretty well for all exams so I would recommend completely.
Professor K was great for Chem 1, but not as great for Chem 2. Her lecture style is entirely dependent on her hand-writing what she's saying, no slideshows or videos during lectures. It was confusing for some people to follow. Exam class averages were always low 70's. She was OK, but my grade suffered.
Was not too hard of a class, but you have to put time into learning the material. Dr. K is extremely kind and helpful, but can be a little scatterbrained. If you follow along in the lectures, you should have no problems.
If you can do the practice exams, you're set for the actual exam. Sometimes she messes up on the problems in lecture but she does the problems in real time and writes out each step. Sometimes she flies by the problems but you can stay after class and talk with her if needed. Overall, definitely take her for Gen Chem 1!
She was pretty good. Some of the lectures were a bit of a disaster but she is a very kind lady.
I took her for Chem 1 and 2. A good teacher and definitely made a super hard class more manageable. I thought it was easier than Chem 1 but that's probably because I'm used to her as a teacher. The practice exams are very similar to the real exams
Dr. K is an awesome professor. Her lectures are very chill (goes over concepts as well as practice problems). Redoing the practice problems in her slides and studying the concepts she covers is all you need for an A on her exams. There are weekly quizzes graded by TAs that are basically grade boosters and she gave 2 extra credit "assignments."
Kurapati is a very kind professor, though sometimes a little disorganized in her lectures. Her practice exams were helpful before each test, and the weekly ALEKS homework is also good practice. This is my second semester with her and she always means well and will advocate for her students' grades. Three exams + 1 final, homework, quizzes, lab, etc
Had her for Chem 1 too and she was great! 3 exams and the ACS final, but exams are very fairly weighted (15% each). Super kind and caring and gives lots of examples in class. She lectures a little fast, but it's all straightforward when you review your notes to study. Practice exams are really great to study with.
She is a really caring teacher who is always accessible outside of class and ready to help. Your grade is based on tests, quizzes, ALEKS, Tophat, lab, final, etc. She also gives practice exams before tests, and the content on those is usually close to what is seen on the test. And, she does give extra credit opportunities!
I love Dr. K and signed up for Gen Chem 2 with her next semester! The way she explains problems in class is very easy for someone with a non-chemistry background to understand. The weekly ALEKS helps to practice material as well as the practice tests she posts before the exams. Very approachable and you can tell she wants her students to succeed
I came into this class with almost zero chemistry knowledge. Dr. K makes gen chem 1 super manageable and she's extremely accessible outside of class. She adds in extra credit, weights exams fairly, and her exams aren't too bad. She gives good preparation for exams and lots of resources. I highly recommend her!
she's a great prof! the only thing I will say is that during her lectures she actually writes her notes out with the class and while she does practice problems in class she doesn't allow you to actually try on the problems and often she makes mistakes during lecture that can confuse a student more. Other than that I highly recommend taking her!!
Nice person and good lecturer. Only complaint that I have is that annotated notes were not posted, so it was hard to check if your solutions to the practice problems were correct or not. Lab was hell, but not her fault. If your lab instructor sucks and grades harshly it'll kill your grade. I would've gotten an A if not for that.
Although I ended with a C, an A is SO manageable. Keep up with ALEKS + actually care about lab. Dr. K gives out study guides for exams that are extremely helpful. Don't use her guide for the final since its a standardized test rather than one she made. Her grade makeup percentages are fair and not extremely exam heavy like many STEM profs.
Dr. Kurapati is a very nice person but she is an inexperienced teacher. She rushes through lectures that have 60-70 slides each and simply reads off the slides without adding any additional information or explanation. She wants her students to succeed but her getting corrected by students for making errors in simple practice problems is worrying.
Dr. Kurapati is an amazing professor. She provides practice exams that are very similar to the actual exams, and she also provides any extra credit opportunities. In lectures, she mainly works through practice problems with the class, which I found very helpful. Dr. K is very kind and you can tell that she really wants her students to succeed!
She is so kind and a good prof. She helps her students understand every concept. ALEKS is a lot of work but trust me u should take her bc shes a rlly good prof.
Her tests are identical to the practice tests she gives, so if you do those you will be more than fine. She is not the best lecturer and uses ALEKS but I think doing ALEKS helped me a lot.
I have had her for both Chem 1 and chem 2. In order to succeed you need to follow along in lecture for the concepts because you will be quizzed on them and MOST IMPORTANTLY is to study her practice exams like they are the bible. her practice exams are almost exactly like her real ones when it comes to free response questions.
LOL just dont take her. Awful.
The lectures weren't too great because she reads straight off the slides and nothing more. You can tell she cares about her student's success and is by no means a bad professor. What really made this class good was the difficulty of the tests, which is not hard at all. The final exam is heavily curved (I literally got a 100). Would recommend.
Honestly a very sweet lady that means well. However, her classes were so draining. She would do practice problems the entire class and straight up read off the slideshow without explaining or teaching any further. TAs weren't very helpful either. Please stay clear as she is also a very unexperienced professor.
I thought Dr K was very kind laid back. Her tests were exactly like the study guide she would give you before hand. My only complaint is that I felt like she stopped teaching by the end of the semester. Each lecture, be prepared to sit there and watch her solve problem after problem while barely explaining her process. It just got hard to follow.
a little disorganized but i took her for chem II and I and she was super nice and tests were easy compared to other classes. She prepares you and has a study guide/list of things to know for the exam and recitation quizzes so really not hard to get an A. Also her office hours are super helpful.
Super nice, fair grader and loves her students
Very very very very disorganized prof. Lectures were just her doing problems and she struggled to answer some questions.
I really liked her, she is a good transition from high school chemistry to college chemistry. She genuinely wants you to succeed and her practice exams were similar to the real ones. Her tests were fair in the way that everything she had put on her lecture slides will somehow be directed toward the test. She won't pull any tricks on you.
Dr. K is queen. She is so caring and sweet, and very approachable. Exams aren't weighted too heavy, and there's also extra credit assignments that can boost your grade a lot. I found it easy, but I also took AP Chem and 3 years of chemistry in high school, so take that as you will. Only negative is she's disorganized and exams sometimes had errors.
dr k is so amazing! super kind and approachable; her lectures and general vibe made her class the ONLY class i never skipped that semester. she does plenty of practice problems in-class and posts notes on canvas. pretty test-heavy course but just study and you'll be fine. don't wait to do aleks until the last minute unless you're a masochist lol
She is a gem of the chem department. She is genuinely kind and cares about her students and their doing well, she's super understanding and approachable and will be more than willing to help you. Her exams are fair, and she is not trying to trick you anywhere. I would absolutely recommend her!
What a great professor gives very clear in class examples that mirror exam problems. gives study guides and grades fairly. study aleks, the study guides and make sure to take good in class notes to use for studying and you are good to go in terms of passing her class.
She uses ALEKS but modules are due every 2 weeks so it is manageable. If you do practice problems you will be fine. Uploads the slides before class but no recording. Does tophat questions but doesn't track your location. Quizzes every week and 4 total exams including ACS. She is super sweet and caring, the best professors I've ever had!!
Loved her, she is incredible, super nice, and very welcoming in office hours
Prof. Kurapati has probably been my favorite professor during my time here at Pitt. She is extremely caring, wants the absolute best for her students, and is always very helpful. Gen chem 2 is a tough course, no avoiding that regardless of professor, but her teaching style allows for a lot of in class learning rather than doing it by yourself.
Dr. K was a wonderful professor who's incredibly nice and cares a lot for her students. Her exams count for a bit less than other chem professors and you have other chances to boost your grade with TopHat, ALEKS, and extra credit. Her lectures were easy to understand and she posts practice exams that are identical to the real thing.
I have taken Dr. K for two semesters, she is incredibly kind and caring. SO accessible outside of class. She genuinely wants her students to succeed and she takes any input from students very seriously to make sure everyone is learning efficiently. She gives a lot of partial credit, and is extremely humble and comforting. Very intelligent, 10/10!!
Dr. K was a wonderful professor. She is kind, funny, flexible, and cares so much for her students. She was very accessible and helpful as are her UTAs. Her exams are fair, but be sure yoy understand all of the free responses. If you can take her, do!
Best Chem 2 professor at Pitt! Her lectures are easy to understand and she does go through the types of problems with you. She is also very accessible outside of class and answers questions to the full extent. If you put in the work, you'll be fine.
Exams are fair. Just do the practice exams and redo all the in class problems. Doesn't post notes and can go a little fast. Would recommend.
shes an amazing prof and even a better person. her exams are harder for chem 2 than chem 1, but doable, just requires more effort, but she makes getting an A attainable and highly reccomend.
Dr. K was an amazing professor! After my traumatic experience with my Gen Chem 1 professor, her class was a treat. She solved questions in class, uploaded material beforehand, and genuinely cared about her students. Her exams were manageable, though the final (ACS exam) was different. Weekly quizzes were fine too. Take her, she's the best!
TAKE DR. K!!!! I could not recommend her more. She is a very good lecturer, super accessible and helpful outside of class, and genuinely cares about her students. Her exams are pretty fair but chemistry is hard. So, for chem 2 I think Dr. K is the best option. She gives extra credit and curves the final and your overall grade in the class.
this is my second semester taking dr. k. she's truly an incredible professor and i am seriously going to miss her class! three exams and one final (ACS). no curves on the three exams or final grade but the ACS final is double curved. tophat for participation and aleks for homework every two weeks or so. i totally recommend her for chem 1 and 2!
Chem 1& 2. the best professor out of all at pitt. Provided lots of resources and the slideshows were extremely helpful. Barely any trick questions on the exams as long as you understood the practice exam (almost identical to the real one). Just make sure you understand the class conceptually. Do the ALEKS and the tophat for a grade booster.
Chem 2 was harder than her chem 1. The grading system on her syllabus will change depending on the class (should've gotten a B+ but ended with a A-). Lectures ending up being only practice question but the hardest part was the multiple choice. Would recommend her office hours because she is good at explaining there.
kurapati is great. i had a not-so-great chem 1 prof fall semester, but kurapati completely turned around my freshman year chemistry experience. she is very knowledgeable and her lectures are very thorough. only thing is that she doesn't drop any exams (there's 4) but she does curve the final (70 acs questions) so that's good. take her if you can!!!
She's a really nice and cares about all her students and is def the best genchem prof. However, there are no good gen chem profs. Her teaching style is def not for me at least long boring lectures where all we do is practice problems and Aleks is really easy but extremely tedious and time consuming. I just feel like I didn't learn much in her class
Professor K is very kind and does her best to help her students. One of the better chem professors, yet class can still be a bit boring. Had her for Chem 1 and 2, and 2 is defiantly harder but gives partial credit.
One of the best Gen chem professors at Pitt. Best option. Take her.
