Prof Moranton is by far one of the best psychology professors at UCSD. Would not be passing this class if it wasn't for her. Lectures are very clear and understandable. 4 quizzes, 2 midterms, 1 final. All non-cumulative though!!! Really helps keep your grade up. Her grading criteria is also a bit different so it's pretty nice (100-90 is an A).
The course materials are pretty dry and boring at times. She has a nice grading scale, which is good. It's good that she always start the class with a review of what we learned from the previous class to refresh our memory. All of the exams are a combination of written responses and multiple choices. The exams are based on mainly the lectures.
Hands down one of the most down to earth professors! Despite barely anyone showing up to lecture, she still exerts so much energy into her lectures and keeps it interesting. The podcasts are a must if you want to pass the class since it is mostly short answer but she gives alot of partial credit!! Great Professor and I definitely would take again
This class is so hard. all tests are not multiple choice.
Her slides are so vague to the point where she'll ask questions on the exam that were about a random picture in her slides. Sometimes she doesn't explain everything she puts in her powerpoints and expects u to know it on the exam. Don't rely on the podcast bc if it doesn't work u won't understand the material unles u get it explained by her in OH
I'm taking Moranton for psych 2 and I'm really enjoying it so far! Her grading criteria is great and super fair considering it's a tough class (An 80% is an A-,) but honestly as long as you study and put in the time you'll have no problem doing well. A lot of information to memorize but her exams are fair and questions come directly from lecture.
quizzes are like midterms, midterms like finals. class grading appears generous, but really is in place bc without it majority students would fail. she holds us accountable to standard in new Zealand bc thats where she's from. during covid outbreak, while others made finals open note bc students r stressed and haven't studied she made it via zoom
Her lecture is fun despite she goes really fast paced. Not everything is included in her slides, so you have to go through podcast a few times to make sure to get everything down. She is a nice person and is very passionate in teaching. Yet the cons is that she cramp everything into the syllabus and make you learn everything. Also, exams are hard!
Took her during Covid-19. She was one of the few professors that recognized AND prioritized the mental health of students by being really flexible. She really cares about her students. I honestly feel bad that I only showed up when there was a quiz or midterm because she has a big heart. Just study the lecture slides!!!! + watch the podcast pass
Finished "midterm 3" today, since it's on Cavans bc COVID-19, it was open notes. 1st time: I guess a lot of ppl didn't finish, 2nd time: unlimited time took me 2 hrs. Made me realize how vague her slides are. Questions were vague too. This class is too unnecessarily hard.
Overall, (-)class was memorization heavy, 6 quizzes (drops worst quiz), and 3 midterms all short answer. (+)You don't need to buy the textbook; (+)Fair exams are fair and based on her lectures ENTIRELY; (+)Very fair grader- you can dispute your grade for a higher one; (+)80% A- (+) 1/3 of the class got an A+
I took her during winter 2019-20 (when all we ended up having to take online finals). She has weekly quizzes that are very content heavy but listening to her podcasts helps. Attendance is not mandatory but recommended. 3 Exams total, they are not easy but she is good at teaching & interesting. She is also understanding.
Most obscure slides ever. Short answer exams rather than multiple-choice push time on tests. Grading that devalues quiz scores based on class results; not traditional, an A is 80 due to how severe the class is. Boring class with a mediocre Adjunct. Her teaching style and personality leave little to be desired. Prepare to be bored senseless. Dreary.
Is always skipping slides in lectures, do not attend synchronous class because you won't be able to take notes. The moment she switches to one slide she has already skipped it so if you actually want to retain any information you have to rewatch lectures so you can pause and unpause over and over for slivers of information
Skip slides and go way too fast during lecture, so its better to just watch the podcast honestly. The quizzes are mostly short answer questions that test you on random slides, which really doesn't make any sense in terms of efficient learning. Really disappointing. Don't take her if you can.
Contrary to a lot of the other reviews Ive seen on here Ive really enjoyed her class! Shes understanding if you have situations come up. She does go a bit fast, so podcasting the class might be better if youre like me and like to go at your own pace. But overall shes really sweet and the grading scale is really generous (80% is an A-)
i really enjoyed lia's class; she was very funny and understanding. such a sweet prof and she does go fast but just rewatch the lectures at your own pace. her slides do not have much info on them sometimes so it forces you to really listen to what she says and take good notes, which is a good thing for me. def recommend her!
One of my favorite professors at UCSD. Can come off a bit serious at first but is a really awesome professor. Whenever you have a question she will always make sure to clarify anything. After every lecture it was required to do 5 questions but it just really helps to prep for tests. Your tests make up your grade. STUDYYYY
A really nice professor. She's a very good lecturer, and has a very good understanding of everything she presents. She's funny too, and very kind. She gives lots of quizzes, and it can feel overwhelming, but it makes exams much easier. The quizzes and exams are primarily short answer questions. The assignments aside from that are manageable.
Yes she expects you to actually learn the material and we are graded by primarily just quizzes and exams but if you actually watch the lectures back they are presented in a way you can easily understand and she is a very engaging lecturer. I would take her again and again even though there is a LOT of material to absorb.
I do not recommend this professor at all because her class is harder than expected. She expects us to learn everything in her lecture slides fast. The only thing she and her TAs grade are tests. And tests are more than half of your grade in college. She gives too way too many tests. Tests are the only assignments we get graded on in her class.
Super funny and caring professor! Lectures can seem vague at first as they only have pictures and few bullet points. However, her lecture style encourages students to take notes in their own words instead of copying word for word what is on the screen. Quizzes and exams are straight from the lectures, so make sure to actually LISTEN.
Professor Moranton sets up her class in a fair manner, dividing the course into thirds. This means there are 3 major exams and quizzes almost every week. You only need to know that third for that exam. Essentially, if you're good at memorization and rewatch the lectures through the podcast you will do great. You get an A+ if you are over 90%!
She's not caring and seemed annoyed in office hours. Tests are written responses and MC but she only gives 1 minute per question. Sometimes has obscure questions on the tests. Has accent that was hard to understand/rude about America. Just show up for the test, don't bother going to lecture they're recorded & 3 hours. expect to re-watch everything.
There are quite a few things about this professor that make it incredibly difficult to succeed in the class. She doesn't allow you to view your quizzes/exams after the grades have been released. She'll show you the wrong answers for ~5 min. Her lectures are 3 hours long and she rushes without actually explaining the concepts. Overall not great.
Grades on the curve to give extra credit for difficult exams. Lots of memorization, but the Prof makes lectures entertaining. I suggest reading chapters after each lecture and going over podcasts since she talks fast to better understand the material. The assessments have short answer prompts which are harder than multiple choice, so memorize lots!
Her lectures are full of so much information and you have to memorize every little word she says because it will be on the quizzes/exams. She was very rude when I emailed her about questions that I had. Would not recommend at all. She is a little funny but overall this class will be making you study every minute of your life for 10 weeks.
so many things to memorize, the powerpoint used in class is different from the one posted in canvas.
This professor clearly knows her stuff and has really good energy lecturing in class. Structured as a 3 hour class once a week, so the lectures were SUPER content heavy and it took some endurance. All students required to show up in person to take a quiz on the last lecture, but you can leave after that. Grades hard but grade scale is forgiving.
She expects you to memorize any and every little word that she says. When I emailed her about any question that I had she was so rude. Expect to be writing down everything she says and rewatching her recorded lectures many times. She uses a cool grading system which is how I passed the class because if not I would have failed. Don't recommend her
She is honestly a great professor and I would say she quizzes and tests only on things she covers in class. Her quizzes were not too hard but you NEED to stay on top of lectures and take lots of notes on them. It was a lot of content but if you are going for psychology and stuff about the brain you will love the class.
The lecture was very messy. The slides were almost pictures without words. You had to memorize a lot of things by yourself.
I feel like I studied more for this class than the rest of my courses. It seems like she knows what she's talking about but the presentations were a bit messy. She really likes short answer responses with a side of multiple choice questions. You gotta rewatch the lectures & review the material outside class to do well on this course for SUREEE
The class was very interesting, but it demanded a lot of memorization, and as I took it as a GE, this was sometimes really frustrating. In addition, there were exams every week, quizzes, and midterms based firmly on the lectures. The grading scale is very forgiving, so although it is hard to get a very high percentage, an A is 85%, which is great.
Her lecture slides have barely any information on them; she speaks about everything. Her tests are mainly short answers, so you'll fail if you don't write word for word what she wants. Be prepared to do outside learning because she doesn't explain full concepts, but they are on the test. Overall, the worst experience I've had at UCSD.
She demonstrates her knowledge well but lacks the ability to transfer that knowledge to students. You have to be willing to do the extra steps to learn the material. The class is graded on a high curve. A 60% is a C. She has assignments based on each lecture, and there are 3 lectures a week. If you have a choice, don't take her.
Her lectures are very difficult to follow along bc it's mostly her explaining pictures. She doesn't fully explain concepts clearly. I had to spend so much extra time teaching myself the concepts outside of class. Tests are short answer but she's looking for very specific answers. Overall probably one of the worst classes/profs I've ever taken.
There are 6 exams. If you use spell check, she'll fail you. If you quote her on an exam, she'll fail you. If you click off the test for less than a second, she'll fail you. Do not take her.
In W22 the class relied heavily on memorizing a lot of material, as long as you put effort into paying attention during lecture and taking good notes, a good grade is rather easily achievable. Her grading curve is very forgiving as long as you make an effort to do well. She explained material very well and clearly knew what she was talking about.
Lectures are overwhelming/fast and it requires A LOT of studying (short answer/closed note exams). Teaching team grades HARD!! You need to know everything, but there is a generous curve. I studied daily in order to succeed & because of how time consuming this class is, I personally wouldn't take it again. Moranton is passionate/positive though! :)
Class was fairly easy as all you had to do was memorize things. Her lectures are thoroughly explained and you can tell she enjoys teaching a lot. The weekly quizzes are easy as well, students who say they were hard simply just didn't study the material enough because it is all included in the lecture. I literally only showed up on quiz days LOL.
I took this class as a science GE because I thought it would be the least science-y, given the name Psyc. It was hard, LOTS of memorization, but decently interesting and if you take it you might appreciate it IMO. It was just more bio-heavy than expected and I'm more interested in the mind and behavior on a philosophical / psychological level.
This class was hard because it's literally ALL memorization and if you don't stay on top of the lectures you will 100% fall behind. The prof is super nice and cares about what she is teaching, but if you don't understand the concept the class doesn't compensate for that, it's also more bio than psych for 7 weeks but after that it gets easier.
The class overall is A LOT of memorization, and it leans more towards bio than psych, but Dr. Lia makes the lecture very engaging and you can tell that she knows what she's talking about. She explains in depth everything she teaches and her grading scale makes passing way easier than any other class and takes her time to answer questions.
She is naturally charismatic so her lectures were largely interesting and engaging. Although she speaks quickly and covers a lot of content in a short amount of time, she made sure to carefully answer all questions that arose during lecture. The content itself is not difficult, but it requires a lot of memorization (with very generous grading).
I love Professor Moranton: she is charismatic and clearly very passionate and knowledgable about the subject. The class is hard by nature, and I think that its name being merely "PSYC2" undersells how difficult the material will be, considering that it's presented like an intro class. It is largely neurobiology. Grades hard, with a nice curve.
The class is interesting but is memorization based, you need to review the lectures and your notes daily. There are quizzes every friday and the class is split up into 1/3rd's so there isn't really a final it's just a third midterm. The class itself is curved due to her grading scale and isn't super difficult, just review notes and lectures.
Her weekly quizzes are stressful but it ensures ppl don't slack off too much and preps ppl for midterms. Very fast-paced and her slides can be a bit messy. She follows the Australian grading system which is just amazing. She understands textbooks are pricey and does not make them mandatory. Even w/o a textbook, it is doable to perform well.
Loved her and her grading system. Her slides are a little unorganized and some of the info is stated rather than written on the lecture slide so you have to be quite attentive during lecture. Its not difficult at all, but its just a lot of memorization. She is fast paced and there are weekly quizzes to keep you accountable of the content.
Amazing Professor:)
This professor is not good. She is very knowledgeable but she is too fast about the content
Do you want a class made artificially more difficult? Well, you're in luck... meet PSYC 102 with Nirelia Moranton. All of her slides are always messy; she intentionally leaves off material from those slides to force you to rewatch lecture; the majority of her exam Qs are free-answer, where she seeks a very specific answer. Avoid at all costs.
Get ready for a ton of busy work (including a research presentation) and 6 exams (every other week). More than half of her exam questions are free-response and she says she does this because she doesn't want you to memorize the material. Let me just say that I haven't done more memorizing in my entire life. Don't take this class unless you have to.
The lectures feel more sparse than the actual material that you will be tested on. It was more helpful to read the textbook AND watch/attend the lectures than it was to just rely on the lecture material. The course is fully manageable if you stay on top of the work, participate during lecture and ask questions where there is any confusion.
Sensory neuroscience is a dense class, unlike the other core neurosciences. Moranton is approachable, knows her stuff, and gives amazing lectures. Her midterms/weekly quizzes are all free response and based on lecture; rewatch the lectures, go to office hours, and study your butt off for an A (even with the huge curve).
Dr. Lia is a great professor with a sense of humor. Most of the grade is based on tests and weekly quizzes, both of which are fair and only contain content that's been adequately covered in the lectures. She puts a heavy emphasis on free-response questions but makes up for it with a very generous grading scale.
Weekly low-stake assignment based off lectures, weekly quiz, 3 exams, 3 SONA credits. Many free-response questions on quizzes but 80% is an A. No textbooks, slides available online. Attendance only needed for quizzes/exams. Be prepared for lots of memorization. Professor has a great attitude, is knowledgeable, and respectful.
I could not wait to get this class over with. It would be so much more enjoyable if tests were multiple-choice, but instead, I risked pulling my hair out over the poorly worded and vague free-response questions. If you're a student that's okay with Bs and Cs you'll probably be fine, but for you A students, don't let the grading scale deceive you.
Don't get me wrong, Moranton is great at giving lectures and really nailing in topics that are tricky or hard to understand. That being said, I could not wait for this class to conclude and it felt like one of the longest quarters of my life. The quiz and test questions were vague and specific responses were expected.
She is really knowledgeable about psychology, I just wish her classes weren't so test heavy, even though the curve was very generous. A lot of the class was very memorization heavy but I feel the quizzes and midterms with the MC Q's and the short responses the questions were very vaguely worded and the grading wasn't really clear.
Records her lectures! Very knowledgeable and willing to take a pause during lecture to answer everyone's questions. Was very test heavy but all the answers to the quiz questions were in the slides which she also posts. No cheat sheets for the quizzes or finals.
Your best bet for this class is to watch the podcasts and memorize basically everything. It's tedious but it's very doable. Props to her for structuring the class to FORCE students to stay on top of the material, otherwise I would've failed. Overall, it's not that hard just do ur work, make a quizlet and you'll pass with flying colors (+80% = A-).
The professor is extremely knowledgeable however the lectures are quite heavy with content and require your complete attention or else you may fall behind in understanding the material. There are frequent tests which are the major determinants of the grade.
Prof Lia is really funny and sweet. She clearly cares about students and has a very forgiving grading curve, but her lectures come across as disorganized (still very informational) and the course is very test heavy. Her exam questions are very open ended so my best advice is to just brain dump as much as you can when it comes to written responses.
This class isn't designed for you to get good grade. She made it more difficult by adding a presentation at the end of the semester. The averge on her exams is an F on every single exam we took. Our exam and homework grades weren't graded for a long time. Singlehandly the most difficult class I've ever taken. So many people dropped out of the class
Moranton gives such fun lectures with lots of interactive experiments. That said, this was the most difficult class I've ever taken in my life, which met my expectations for the quality of education I'd get at UCSD. It felt like a triumph to make it out alive. It was a challenge, but a worthwhile challenge on an interesting topic. Study a LOT.
Great professor but difficult class. I loved the material and Dr. Moranton is funny and makes learning fun. Attendance isn't mandatory but most people came on the days we had the weekly quiz because those were mandatory. There is a huge curve with an 80% and up counting as an A. Overall, I'd recommend but be sure to stay on top of the class!
If you took PSYC 2 with Moranton and you think you can do it again, think again. If you take this class, you have to either be REALLY into Sensory Neuroscience. Expect to be proud of receiving a 50/80 on your tests. All tests are 70% difficult short answer/essay questions. If you don't want to be studying for this class all quarter, don't!
I truly believe she is a great professor with a kind heart. However, her class was really difficult as the tests are mostly short answer questions that require you to understand a high level of detail. The topics were interesting, but some topics were difficult to understand when there was lack of organization in her slides.
If you want an elective class that requires memorization of lectures to pass look no further. She didn't even have stuff graded from 9 days ago and today was the final. Yet she gives you 48 hours to do hw. Ours were due Sat. morning at 8am. Absolutely the worst teacher I've had at UCSD, and this was my last class to graduate. Don't take her class.
DO NOT TAKE HER! One of the worst professors I have ever had. Her exam questions are extremely difficult and too broad for the subject matter. DO NOT LET THE HUGE CURVE FOOL YOU I let it fool me and took her and I regret it the most as she is disorganized, extremely harsh grader, and goes extremely fast during lectures. AVOID IF YOU WANT A OK GRADE
Just rewatch her lectures and take good notes. Memorize the entire lecture (have meaningful memorization, not rote). Students will panic/complain, don't let it get to you. This class is a breeze if you make it a breeze. Make flashcards about everything, they will help you (Anki is my preferred, quizlet would work). Good luck, have fun, lock in.
Not even going to lie, this class is hard. Like, HARD. Be prepared to dedicate hours and hours to study. You need to know all the material at a very high level of expertise to get an A in the class. 80%-100% is considered an A. One of the hardest classes I've taken here but if you stay on top of your...stuff...you'll be fine. GOOD LUCK!
you have a single week to memorize 3 lectures fully. Her exams are really hard if you even fall a minute behind. If you can avoid this class you should
I enjoyed her class because the content was interesting, her teaching style was great, and she made it fun. Yes we did have tests biweekly, but as long as you study you should be fine. She does it this way so we actually learn, for me it worked wonderfully.
You have to essentially guess what she wants you to write on exams in a very specific way and if you don't your grade plummets even if you do well on every single other assignment in her class. Get ready to receive 40/80 which is the class average or 30/80 on really bad exams she does not address this in any way and the curve doesn't help.
Hard, yes, but definitely not as unfair as others describe. Free response exams, but just describe things exactly how she did in lecture and you will get nearly all full credit every time. Go to lecture, take notes, study them thoroughly before the exam, and with the insane curve you're guaranteed to get an A or a B.
very little HW other than studying for quizzes. the quizzes are HARD. like HARD. which is why an A is 80% and above. the slides are already filled in, and attendance isn't mandatory, but the quizzes are more over what she says rather than what's already on the slides. also potential for 10% extra credit. make sure to do the SONA early!!!
Really sweet professor, she was funny and engaging during lectures. The quizzes and midterms were definitely graded pretty hard, mostly FRQ. But she curves the class a lot. The syllabus states that an 85% is an A.
She is a really caring and engaging lecturer. There is a weekly quiz so you really have to stay on top of things but it does also help with keeping you engaged. Exams are mostly frq so take good notes. Amazing curve but I really suggest to not solely rely on that if you want an A.
BEWARE that you HAVE to take super in depth notes because ANYTHING said in lecture is fair game, even if it's barely brushed upon. There are weekly quizzes and 2 projects, no hw. The material is extremely memory based, NOT application, so if your memory is not great, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Pretty interesting, but this is NOT a free class.
Difficult class, tested on everything
NOT an easy class, attendance is not mandatory, but weekly quizzes are based entirely on memorizing lectures word for word. Do not take if you cannot actively recall over 50 words per week. The grading curve is 85% is an A, but the average is a C, so take the curve with a grain of salt. Lectures and material based on memorization, not learning.
Taken Moranton for psyc2&102. You have to be consistent w/studying. She's disorganized. I had to reorder and delete slides myself, because they would be different from the ones presented in class. Exams are biweekly and you have to be V detailed in your responses, mostly SAQ. She is a sweet&silly professor but don't take if you don't want to study.
First off, 3 out of my 5 exams weren't graded till finals week, super unprofessional to not grade exams in a timely manner & left me anxious the whole quarter. Exams are very difficult, mostly free response and she grades hard. Goes fast in lecture & expects you to remember the smallest details. Only good thing about this class is the curve.
Took for CBN core seq. Unless you need to take this class, I'd choose another upper div. Podcasted the whole class because I felt like I couldn't understand everything without pausing, since the course material is so dense. Overall fair, but definitely difficult. Moranton's a good lecturer, but there's just a ton of material for ten weeks.
i HATE her
AVOID HER ! If you're not good at exams, not good at memorizing, or not good at taking notes, DO NOT TAKE HER. ALSO It took her about two weeks to grade one fking midterm. WORSE The final exam tested contents in students' presentations, you need to learn and memorize contents have nothing to do with this class, in my case, 3 other students'. FK
Just don't
I know this professor is controversial, but I personally thrived in her classes. She podcasts all of her lectures, and the transcripts are very easy to study with. What she talks about in lecture is exactly what is on quizzes, and while it is a lot of memorization, it is very easy to prepare and obtain a good grade if you know how to study. (ANKI!)
bruh save urself
Class is heavily lectured based but I thought lectures were engaging and intriguing. The lecture is recorded, and so people don't come to class unless there's quiz/test. The class required a lot of studying/reviewing, but the professor was really engaging. All the questions on tests and quizzes are in the lecture so I thought it was pretty fair.
It is the end of week 10 and many of us have yet to obtain our grades for Test 2 that was on nov 4. just takes very long to grade. Topics are enjoyable but there is a lot of content, quiz/exam every week basically. they have some multiple but mostly open questions. grading curve is very generous though C- is 50%.
takes forever to grade (took almost six weeks to receive grade on midterm 2); no real opportunities to actually practice what is learned in lecture; confusing lecture format and difficult to study for quizzes
Took almost two months to grade midterms, quizzes, and assignments. The TAs grade harshly. Do not take any class with this professor. would not recommend.
dont even try w this prof. save urself time and dignity.
Very disorganized and passive aggressive, the entire class was a mess and extremely unaccommodating to students. The canvas was not organized until halfway through the semester, there was barely enough time to take the quizzes, and some students didn't even get their midterms back until AFTER THE FINAL. Interesting material but horrible execution.
I hyped up this prof. halfway thru the quarter. Regret. I got an A, but be ready to put up with extremely slow grading timelines and late-quarter assignments with little guidelines and a passive-aggressive professor. A is definitely attainable, just know what you'll be dealing with. Exam 2 wasnt graded for 6 weeks for some.
