I am so grateful I had the opportunity to be in her class. She is exceptional, respectful, dynamic instructor who provides you with outlines to make your presentations easier. She will approve your topic before you start working on it. An easy A? It's up to you. Just do your homework and take notes during class because it will be on your test.
great teacher, class is never boring very fun - just go to class participate- follow her speech instruction - do your best on speech she is always happy to help. i hate communication but i don't mind tal=king comm class with this proof again . I WouLD highly recommend this proof.. best teacher i ever had :) good look!
Nita had a way of taking a subject which most everyone dreads and transforming it into a fun course. I waited to take this course until my last semester at mission and wish I could take it again. Truly a great and enjoyable experience.
mrs nita class are every fun.
Do not hesitate to enroll in her class, she will make you feel comfortable during your presentations.Extra credits available. And finally, to follow up with my previous post of 10/27/13, I got an A in her class.
She's great! I was scared to take this class but she makes you feel comfortable.Hw is easy. 4 main speeches. She is so helpful and encouraging! def recommend her.
Nita is absolutely amazing. I was terrified of taking Public Speaking, but she was such a supportive teacher, it turned out to be a lot of fun. I would love to take another class with her. Thank you Nita. You are the best!
She is seriously the best teacher at Mission. She's so sweet and very helpful. I was terrified coming to class! Attendance is mandatory and she does not curve grades at all!, but she does give a lot of extra credit points which are very easy to receive.
Nita was just awesome. I dreaded taking this class due to the obvious reasons, but I'm glad that I finally took this class during my last semester at Mission. She really does put you at ease and gives effective, encouraging feedback. And the class itself was like a support group atmosphere. Definitely recommend Nita for Comm 001.
Nita is amazing. Very sweet, encouraging and knowledgeable. Take her class and you won't regret it. She make public speaking very east and enjoyable. She takes in class quizzes that are very easy. 4 lectures and lots of extra credits to earn a good grade. All you need to do is show up in the class and have fun.
Amazing teacher, passionate about helping her students, gives lots of chances to make up failed speeches, or for extra credit. Follow her outline for speeches and you're good
She is very passionate about her class, clear of her expectations, not an easy grader (I managed to get an A, but still). If you want someone who gives you honest feedback and helps you improve your presentation skills, take her!
Nita is one of the best prepared and excellent presenters I have ever come across. Class is always engaging and while Im not super into the material, Nita makes it possible to learn through her lectures
I was nervous to take Public Speaking and so glad that I took it with her! She was a nice professor! She makes you feel comfortable and She was really knowledgeable and a very good speaker. It was easy to get an A as long as you put the effort. She gives a lot of extra credits and her quizzes were so easy! I highly recommend her class!!
Wonderful and beautiful professor!
Ms. Esparza is the best. She's always so professional in class, and she's always smiling. You can easily talk to her outside of class and she's really passionate in what she does. She gives GREAT feedback on the speeches, and if you work hard, you'll surely get an A! Even if your speech sucks, she still makes you feel confident and comfortable.
Professor Nita is the best professor. Public speaking is not easy. But I learned it is very easy in her class. She encourages everyone and makes it lively. You have opportunity for extra credit in this class. Clear grading criteria. Some group work is necessary but easy. I recommend taking her class.
I loved her class, but she can be a harsh grader. For her extra credit assignments its not even worth it for the amount of work. She really is a harsh grader.
Nita is the best teacher for public speaking. She made 7:45 am worth going to because it helps me wake up during the day. I was a shy person but taking this class made me feel confident and comfortable. Definitely take her class.
Everyone recommended her to me and I'm glad I took her class! She gives great feedback on speeches. Make sure you PRACTICE with your group and ask questions on outline if you need it. Her lectures are based off the book and the quizzes are easy and quick. Activities in class are helpful too. She responds to emails quick and is very helpful!
She is probably the best public speaking prof at mission. She gives a lot of extra credit and is extremely nice.
Is an extremely harsh grader. She nitpicks speeches and deducts major points for minor faults. Every extra credit added up is 2% grade boost. If you sign up for this class, you will have to spend a large chunk of your schedule making and memorizing your speech.
She's an amazing professor. Yes, she is a hard grader but she's trying to help us become confident speakers. Gives extra credit to help you with your grade. Practice your speeches and you'll do fine.
One of the best professors in mission college. She is so sweet and professional, always encourage you to make you confident no matter you are a native speaker or not. She might be a tough grader, but she gives lots of extra credit. Try to get as many as possible, it's an easy A. Highly recommend!
Nita is a fantastic professor! I've taken her from Com001 and Comm004 and I wish I could have taken her for more classes. You have a journal where you define each term from the book (each chapter), do an example, and then you have 3 paragraphs where you answer different questions, a midterm, 2 group projects, a few other assignments, and a final.
Very powerful content and student interaction at first is hard, but eventually thru honest speeches by many it could possible have changed lives or empowered people to take action in a positive way to make our community a better place! For real! Awesome experience.!
Attendance is a big chunk of your grade, just show up to class. 6 quizzes, 1 dropped/extra credit. 4 speeches, intro, informative, persuasive and tribute. She's fun, fair grade. But if you choose a partner for informative, make sure to choose the right one because you both will get the same grade.
Spring 2019: She is a very nice person and outgoing with the students. The only 3 thing is attendance is a big part of your grade, including the group project, and also 1 essay. As long as you do the hw and read the book then you should be fine. The quiz is an open note from hw.
Ms. Esparza is a very caring and nice teacher. She will do everything that you pass the class. She gives many extra credit opportunities. The assignments are clear and easy. Her classes are fun and when you participate in the class you won't fail.
Youre mainly graded on 4 speeches, but she really helps you through them. Easy to talk and interact with. Uses PP & book for the quizzes but thats it. Gives a good time frame for each speech start to finish, to ask questions, change topics, etc. I felt really energized in her 7:30AM class, she really brings out the enjoyment so early!
Nita is a professional in her career as a Communication Major when it comes to teaches at Mission College. She gives honest and reliable feedback for each of the four speeches that she assigns. However, there is a caveat to the required two-person 'informative' speech. Do not take Nita Esparza if you have not takin an elementary stats class.
Clear directions, lots of extra credit, great feedback, easier grader. Would recommend 100% if you need to take Com. Even if you fail a speech she gives you the option to redo it. She genuinely wants you to succeed.
Easy going professor. I took her class for Spring 2021. We had four speeches to make: self introduction, informative speech, persuasive speech, and a tribunal speech. As an ESL student, this class was very challenging. May be not so much for native English speakers.
She was a pretty cool person but her views are so set in stone that if you differ from them she makes you kinda feel ousted but she was great to talk to and on many noncontroversial topics was great for being a friend.
Although it was an early class ( 7:45 AM) I really enjoyed it. She is a very charming person and will help whenever her help is needed. She gives high quality education and grades hard at the same time.
Though there's a textbook for this class, she gives a free version in Canvas. Most of your grades would be on the outlines and your actual speeches. There are 4 speeches that you have to do but they're reasonably spaced out. I advise working with your assigned group to gain real-time feedback since online speeches have other factors to consider.
I used to have a big fear of public speaking until I took Nita. Nita hypes you up after your speeches & she gives you feedback on how you can do better. She is soo kind and caring, probably one of the best teachers I've had so far at Mission. I would recommend going to her office hours and she will help revise your speech outline! TAKE NITA!!
She was nice & fun but I did feel like she nit-picks at the Final Outlines (i.e some things I found to be minor errors, but still received a poor grade). It has to be set to her standard (even though outlines/notes are a "to each their own" kind of thing). I would talk to a few other students in my group, & they would also be in the 60-70% range.
The class is not difficult. Public Speaking is challenging but as long as you try, Professor Nita will acknowledge your effort. She is accommodating and understands that everyone struggled with nerves. She also gives many extra credit opportunities.
Professor Nita is an amazing professor. There is not that enough homework and there are only a couple of small quizzes throughout the term. There are group discussions every day. There are also four speeches in the class. If you stick to the outlines and prepare for these speeches, you will pass. Professor Nita is accommodating to people's nerves.
She's a tough, but fair grader. She gives short/10mins quizzes, class activities, extra credit opportunities, and 4 speeches. Speaking in front of the class is not as hard as preparing for each speech, which is time-consuming. She's very approachable, helpful, and gives excellent feedback. The book is tiny and easy to read.
Not a good professor in my opinion could see right through her pretends to care but really just worried about her salary not to mention only gives time to a certain group of people if you don't fall in a that category your on your own, a few students never received help and eventually left the class
Horrendous teacher if you have any sense at all, do not take her class under any circumstances.
As a non-native speaker, I was very worried about taking her in-person class. I was scared to fail this class at the beginning. Finally, I got an A grade. She was a great teacher and graded fairly based on clear and detailed grading criteria. If you read the outline samples given carefully and follow the requirements, you will get a good grade.
Throughout the course, you would notice that this instructor doesn't quite understand nor intend to learn from other cultures. Discussions are limited to certain local cultures that are mostly on the surface level. She doesn't grade your homework in time, which means you won't get immediate feedback from her after each assignment.
She holds strong a biased view on some cultures. If you are from those cultures, DO NOT spend your time and effort taking this class. It won't worth it. You will NOT experience THE SAME as other students who fall into her preferred culture category.
Class is boring, lectures draw you out, presenting in front of class with spotlight on you she grades meanly, you have to meet all her requirements and guidelines, there are a ton, many assignments and multiple only worth a mere points 1-5 at most but they matter, SHE IS REALLY STUBBORN and STRONG BIASED, pretends to be fair and understanding
Make sure to read through things carefully and follow her guideline requirements, 4 major speeches that you get the time to prepare for, some you can present with partner/group, easy going if you clarify for understanding you can pass, just check her outline and follow the examples, all of her assignments are required and meaning, put in the work
There are 4 big speeches, each speech is recorded and posted on canvas, you will have to participate in many group discussions and provide feedback. Lots of assignments, make sure to follow her instructions and you will pass.
Just try your best and work hard and you'll do well. Presenting in front of the class isn't easy but she will give you time to prepare. From creating an outline, follow her steps and address each example and use it as a guide for your own. Make sure to read through her requirements so you don't lose points while being graded.
Make sure to take feedback into consideration. Speaking publicly is nerve racking but you have to have confidence in yourself. Keep practicing and rehearse what you have to say, it will really help you. She grades harshly but it is fair, make sure you follow what she has posted. Meet her requirements and guideline directions.
Take all the ratings into consideration, take the class with her at your own risk. If you are a perfectionist, it will be hard to get that A. You have to meet her requirements to earn all the points. What she has set can't be changed so don't bother asking.
This class is stressful, it sucks that it is a mandatory GE course... Grades hard but that is for your own good to take feedback. YOU HAVE TO FOLLOW HER STANDARDS, minor extra credit don't mean or worth much with the MAJOR speech, just follow her directions that she has clearly have available on canvas.
Quizzes are open note, follow textbook and lecture slides all free available on canvas. Know how to navigate through Canvas Modules for access. MAKE SURE YOU ATTEND CLASS, you have to sign in EVERY DAY at the beginning of class.
SERIOUSLY! Don't take her class it is very hard. She has high standards and stubborn. To pass you must follow all of her requirements which she clearly states the criteria for, but any mistake will hurt you. She tries to be helpful. Listen to other students and help one another
This class is strictly structured, instructor is quite strong biased. Read assignment instructions carefully and follow her requirements to earn all points. Participation matters and attendance is taken every beginning of class need to sign in. Quizzes are open note. Lots of assignments worth minor points only aim to score big on 4 MAJOR SPEECHES.
Terrible instructor who wants you to do things her way properly and if you don't meet her guidelines be ready to redo everything. Not a good professor and people keep leaving her class proves it!
A very harsh grader. Extremely strong biased, you won't be able to change her opinion. will need a good reason. Nitpicky and point out minor faults
Even if you spend hella time making an outline and memorizing how you want to say your speech ... thinking it is perfect and that you will do well. You won't! NITA GRADES HARD and IS VERY PICKY and has STRONG PREFERENCES. Beware
So many students had to drop her class during the semester as it wasn't going well. She takes ages to grade so you won't get much feedback. Her grading is very strict and lets her personal sturdy opinions matter more than students own work. her preferences can't be change unless she likes you and that you are convincing enough
Class moves by quick, you'll hardly have time to breathe. Lots of work preparing for speeches. Extra credit is hardly anything just mere points and if you don't follow her guidelines you are screwed. She has high preferences so meet her requirements
Terrible experience. Made me cry and stress. You will be outed by her if you differ too much. Extra credit work ain't worth nothing nor your time. She grades hard and not an easy A. Very biased and if she likes you, you will get a good grade and score during presentation.
Public speaking ain't easy. It takes a lot of practice to build your confidence. 4 Major speeches and minor preparation assignments. Slow responses and won't know how you are doing unless you ask. Fast paced and many things to do
There are a lot of assignments, minor ones worth a few points and 4 main ones which are the SPEECHES. Clear grading criteria, make sure to meet all her requirements and follow the examples through canvas as a guide as she grades really HARD!
4 Major speeches - Self Intro, Informative, Persuasive, and Tribute. You'll be recorded while giving your speech which is posted to canvas so other students and give you feedback, apart of group discussion as homework. Many assignments but they are to prepare for your speeches.
Stick to her outline format set up to help you prepare for your speech, make sure to check in with her to see if your topic and information is appropriate and relevant to her standards because she grades really tough!
Grades toughly but in a somewhat fair manner, points deducted on minor critiques if not following her guidelines. A few quizzes open note & extra credit opportunities if you meet with classmates to rehearse or see tutor. 4 big speeches, which you need to make outlines for and use to prepare
Build confidence in yourself by giving time to rehearse and practice your speech until you get comfortable knowing what to say. Nita gives you assignments to help prep for your speech, follow the outline guide and allowed notecards during presentation
Allowed to use notecards to help you during presentation but don't rely on it too much or you will lose a ton of points reading off it. Just give yourself time to practice saying your speech and find confidence in yourself.
Just have confidence in yourself and keep practicing your speeches, get feedback from your group, Nita, or tutors. The more time you practice the more confident you'll be to feel comfortable presenting up front of class. She allows you to have notecards during presentation, but don't read off of it.
Nita is very passionate about her class. She has clear expectations and tends to follow through with it so it is hard to convince her. Follow her guidelines to meet all requirements because she is not an easy grader, she just wants you to do well improving your public speaking. Take her feedback into consideration
She is really harsh grader. For her extra credit assignments, it isn't even worth your time and effort for the amount of work she always ask for and requests. Just a couple of mere points won't cover much. Very nit picky on things and grades very tough
Make sure you PRACTICE a lot rehearsing your speech and ask questions on the outlines if you need it. Constantly check in with her on work and if she is okay with it. She grades tough and fastidious over what she likes and dislikes. She looks for particular things.
Take the class and get it over with. Public speaking ain't easy nor enjoyable. To get rid of the nerves just practice a ton rehearsing your speech until you are very confident and comfortable. Make it look natural to her while you present, she is very observant and notices even minor mistakes and grades hard when you mess up
She deducts points on even minor things. A harshly firm grader, good luck convincing her. She is stubborn with her own opinions and stands grounded with them but only because she is trying to help us become confident speakers. Gives extra credit to help you with your grade but not worth it. Practice your speeches and maybe you'll do fine.
Many assignments with ton of requirements (several parts/steps) on top of the 4 major speeches (self intro, informative, persuasive, and tribute). There is a lot of things you have to do for homework and make sure you follow her instructions well or you'll lose points. A tough grader even with extra credit it not worth your time doing it.
I don't learn anything in this class. Sadly, all COMM teachers at Mission aren't good. It takes forever for her to grade your assignment. She can sometimes be hostile when you spoke up a different idea. Also, this class is not for international students because they will ask you about your high school so that they know who is local, who is not.
Class & instructor could be better. Minor assignments + 4 MAJOR speeches. Speech prep begins with an outline. Make sure to follow her format and guideline for full points. She grades hard and only her way is accepted. Outline print for class and review with group and rehearse to build confidence and finalize outline and present through sign up
Worst Professor so stay away. She assigned a huge project at the end and a final exam. Plus so many assignments along the way
She grades extremely hard for a comms class and doesn't even consider you progess as a public speaker. that's honestly why I didn't get an A because she would doc unnecessary points from my outlines and other work so be sure to follow her rubric. there's no point in arguing with her its her way or no way she doesn't round grades wouldn't recommend
She literally grades so harshly for no reason. Most of the time you ask her why she docked points off of your outline she will just ignore you. All grades are also put in the last week of the semester.
A very tedious class and poor experience. So many assignments which takes her ages to grade and update. Her way or the highway, she is very stubborn and grades harshly do follow her rubric
Class is so lame and boring and not worth your time and effort. She makes it all extremely difficult and exhausting. I'm upset I had to put up with her, wasted 1 semester ... no good COMS instructor at Mission unfortunately... and after hearing she was the best ... bummer
She doesn't give you any chance to make up on your mistakes as she grades harshly. Holds high opinions and stands her ground stubbornly. Only her way and nobody else. She is hardly nice or understanding
Oh my, can hardly stand her. Unfortunately too biased and hold strong opinions standing her ground GRADING HARSHLY for NOTHING when acknowledged about being reasonable... yeah right. Had a bad experience and no chance given
DONT BE AFRAID TO TALK WITH HER, it is a must that you check in with her about your work and see if it is to her liking. SHE IS VERY PICKY AND HOLDS STRONG BIAS, grades tough because it is her way only, don't argue with her and just accept it sadly
Ah good luck to those students who are taking her class in the future ... sticks that this class is a requirement to graduate/transfer from MISSION :( it is so scary and difficult not an easy A
A guidance counselor recommended me take her class as she was apparently the best COMS instructor at Mission. 50/50 just push through and try putting up with her. it was a rough ride and a poor semester no easy way out
This class was a frustrating experience. The harsh grading and lack of feedback made it difficult to learn or improve. The feedback provided on assignments was practically non-existent. holds students to an unreasonably high standard. Assignments were returned with red marks all over, highlighting every minor mistake. good luck, you'll need it
Very bad and frustrating experience. Lots of stress and pressure. She grades harshly and the feedback is awful, nothing from her helps because she holds students to an unreasonably high standard. Points off on every minor mistake. Can't be perfect, the extra credit isn't worth it, improving score/grade is nonexistence.
Find a difference professor for this course. Nothing can convince her, everything is done her way. Nit-picky even on small errors. We are all nervous to speak in front of the class but she could care less about you. She has no heart or sympathy for the students. Very strict and stern. Difficult dealing with her
No respect or care in the world. HER WAY IS ABSOLUTE. A very tough grader and deducts points even on minor things. You're done for if she doesn't like you. Terrible feedback and no self improvement ... doesn't teach you anything
Good luck getting through her class, Nita grades very harshly and it is difficult to work with her.
4 major speeches, you create an outline and get to use note cards during speech. Every speech is recorded and posted on canvas for peer feedback. She grades harshly and deducts points even on minor things. Also make sure to check in with her if your work is appropriate as she is quite nit picky and only allows things she like with strong bias
Most of the reviews are blantant ... give her class a try and see it yourself, it does go both way. Public speaking is tough, very nerve wrecking but she gives you enough time to prepare. Create an outline and able to use a notecard but the more you practice, the more you'll be confident and comfortable in front of the class speaking.
She is very tough at grading no matter how hard you try. The little errors in your speech can affect your score.
Tough class, stressful and very nerve-racking. Speaking in front of large class, spotlight on you and you are being recorded doesn't help either. A lot more pressure even though you're given time to prepare your speech and use notecards. Better if this instructor changes their TEACHING APPROACHES ... she is very strict and harsh! Her way only
I have taken Mrs. Nita for Comm 004, 012, and 001, and I loved each one. Her lectures feel more like a conversation and she encourages a lot of class participation. She is the embodiment of what a good communications teacher should be, and will go out of her way to help you as long as you respect her. Best teacher at mission in my opinion!
Pretty much torture and a ton of stress. If you do well under pressure then you should be okay. She grades harshly and knock off points even on minor things. 4 Major speeches which you have to create an outline for to help you prepare. Don't rely too much on the notecards. Assigned small groups to help practice and gain more feedback
She was a lovely and understanding teacher. Attendance was mandatory but if you couldn't make it you just needed to let her know and it was all good. Very open-minded and you can tell she enjoys teaching. The class felt a little rushed at times and they were many many discussions but over-all one of the sweetest professors i've ever had.
I took this class online and it was one of my favorite classes. I didn't think she was a tough grader as others say. She gives you an outline on how to prepare for your speeches so stick to her format & use your time wisely outside of class to prepare well for them.
4 major speeches which she gives you time to prepare for. Create an outline and get feedback from your peers. Make sure to follow her format as she grades harshly even on minor things. Practice a ton to make improvement and gain confidence. You'll be recorded when giving speech and it's posted on the class's canvas for feedback and review.
Professor Nita is caring, clear, and organized. Even in a fast-paced summer class, she made learning feel manageable and meaningful. Her assignments are purposeful and help you grow. If you stay consistent and trust the process, you'll learn a lot. Highly recommend if you want real feedback and support.
