I was so confused during my Chemistry class that even tutoring didn't help me.

SHE IS A VERY GOOD TEACHER. SHE KNOWS HER STUFF!!! I LEARNED A LOT IN THIS CLASS. SHE IS VERY INTIMIDATING, BUT IF YOU SPEAK WITH HER PERSONALLY, YOU'LL SEE THAT SHE IS VERY NICE. SHE IS ALSO VERY HELPFUL.
After taking two more chem classes, I can say that she isn't very good at explaining things. A year later I am starting to understand them because other teachers are better. Her tests are very difficult as well.
Class is not too bad. She gives good notes, but her tests are IMPOSSIBLE!
MEMORIZE HER NOTES AND GO TO CLASS!! you don't really have to read the book unless you're really lost in a particular section. also, make sure u get copies of previous tests, as they're usually the same types of questions.
I thought she was a great teacher
She wasnt that bad of a teacher. One thing I can say is I learned from her class. I finished with an A-. Yes she is really hard, but her curves are really friendly. Also once you get to know her tests, you figure out how to study for them.
She's not that great at explaining things in class but if you go to her afterward she is very helpful and nice. the tests are hard but fair.
She's very challenging, but if you work hard you'll get what she's talking about. She's very knowledgable and knows what she's doing. She even worked with Pultizer Prize winner Henry Taube!
The class is rediculously boring, she doesn't answer questions. She does attempt to be funny (but fails) and she wants her students to learn...but chances are that you won't. Tests are hard, but there is a curve.
Dont take her! Evil!!
Dr. Lewis ruined my life fall semester of my sophomore year. I failed her class miserably with a 30% and i went to class every day. Her tests are impossible, she is an awful human being. I got an A in the lab, so obviously I knew what i was doing. I re-took chem with Purcell and got an A. Unfortunately, i still have an F on my transcript, and my GPA suffered. Please, do not take her. Everyone told me not to, and I didn't listen. Take CHM111 with Purcell. He is much nicer, and a hell of a lot easier.
Dr. Lewis i have to say is one of the most challenging professors i've ever had, but she definitely knows what she is talking about and very helpful when you need her. Yeah she has bad jokes and sometimes not even a straight bottle of caffeine pills will keep u awake in class, but her exams are do-able... if you try hard. So i recommend this class.
Dr. Lewis's class is not the worst class ever, but it's not the best either. Her tests are hard. She spends too much class time on easy stuff and not enough time on the hard stuff. I would try a different professor if I could.
Dr. Lewis was tough, but I think she's a very good teacher and I learned a lot in class. She can seem intimidating, but I found her to be very nice. Honestly, if you're horrible at science don't take her class, but I think almost anyone can pass if they try. I just made sure I went to class everyday and I made an A-.
i hated this class and didnt like her either. her tests were insanely hard, i would study all my notes front to back and still never did well on them. dont take her.
my worst decision since coming to college was taking her.i went to every class, studied until i could answer every question in the homework and her inclass questions. her tests gave very advanced applications of all the topics. questions on her tests are harder than homework questions. her tests are too long. she tries to trick you. DONT TAKE HER.
This woman is the WORST teacher I've ever had. Her lectures are insanely easy, but when you get to the test, it's impossible to overcome. I had a tutor 3 hours a day 3 days a week & STILL couldn't pass a test, even my tutor (master going on PhD) couldn't answer the questions. DO NOT TAKE LEWIS! She doesn't even help you when you go to office hour.
Although she has a tough reputation, she gives a greater % of A's than Purcell. her notes are very helpful, rarely have to open book. Tests are hard b/c she wants you 2 study. Obviously its a weed-out class, not every1 is going to make an A & the people that complain should rethink majoring in science. she prepares you well, & you will learn a lot
I had dr. lewis for general chemistry 1. I did not like Dr. Lewis or her class at all. In class I would understant the material, study for days for the exams and then get no higher than a C on it. I went to her several times and she told me there was nothing she could do for me. I would not recomend her to anyone
Great professor, knows her stuff, very clear and neat with her notes. If you need help she is willing to meet and explain no matter how long it takes. Her tests reflect the practice tests, be sure to do homeworks and practice questions and youll do fine on her tests. great class, she keeps it interesting
I worked in Dr.Lewis' lab (she does research) and she's always there and really helpful and always willing to answer questions if you don't understand something. She tolerates dumb questions (because its probably better than dumb mistakes...this is research people.)
The problem with this class is that if you pay attention and take notes and read the book, it still isn't enough. You have to study and devote your life to it to get a good grade. I loved chemistry and now I honestly just dislike the subject. She made it terrible and I can't even think about chemistry without feeling nauseated and exhausted.
A lot of people do not like Dr. Lewis, but I think that she is a good teacher. Her tests make you think but it is possible to get an A
Her class is really hard, be prepared to study alot. The practice tests are very helpful, she reuses a few of the questions in each test. If you go to office hours, she will help you.
Not an easy class by any means but you will learn a lot from her if you want to...Extremely clear and easy to understand and always available during her office hours.....She gets a bad rap but I dont know why....GREAT PROFESSOR and easy to talk to....TAKE LEWIS...
horrible!! she teaches at a level she is not supposed to... and admits to it! the in class exercises are nothing like the exam questions... you'll honestly feel lost avoid her if you can!!
"take Lewis" is crazy talk - probably posted by her or her croonies! Purcell actually looks better in comparison
DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS! The lecutres are understandable, but when it comes to the tests they are impossible! They are about 10 times more difficult than the class exercises and homework problems. I had a tutor, did the homework, went to workshop, studied, and didn't get higher than a C on exams!
I dont know why people think she is so bad. Studied the night before the tests and still got a B. She does random attendance quizes, but if u go to class for the notes, you never even have to open the textbook. Test questions are identical to previous tests, and similar to homework. A is attainable
Don't take Lewis! Do not believe any of the people who are saying she is a great teacher. If you do not want to kill your GPA take a different professor for chem 111.
I hated her. She has a superiority complex out the ying yang. DO NOT TAKE HER! I hope I managed to pass her class. She is unnecessarily hard. Get out while you can.
She's not an easy A like Purcell. She's not the greatest chem. teacher I've had, but she is good compared to the rest of chem teachers in chem I. Just study her old tests and do the hw over and over and you're guaranteed an A. Also go to her for help and tutors if necessary. Although the curve sometimes blows.
dont take her!! she actually takes attendance so you have to go to class... her tests are really strange and she likes to write little stories and poems on them which just waste ur time... try to avoid her! if u HAVE to take her like i did, do all of the homeworks repeatedly and go over her old tests, sometimes she repeats questions....
The ratings don't lie! This was the hardest class I have ever taken in my life! The test were so tricky and they make you feel really dumb. Though I didn't fail, I changed my major because of this one. DO NOT TAKE!
people are exaggerating. You'll get from this class exactly what you put into it. Chemistry is a difficult subject as it is. Anyway, Lewis is very good at explaining and though her tests are tricky, she wants you to do well and emphasizes practice. If you don't practice like she says, you'll do bad.
The class is difficult, but Lewis is really straightforward. The tests are hard, but the problems are almost identical to the homework and the problems she does in class. However, there is a ton of information you just have to memorize. She isn't the warmest person, but she really helps you if you ask her questions during her office hours.
if you want an A in this class u can easily get one. just listen to what she tells you. do and understand the homework. do and understand the practice test. read through your notes and if she tells you to memorize stuff actually memeorize it. never read the textbook cause its not necessary. also shes very helful if u go during office hours.
Do not take this class! the tests are riciduolous and she always goes off into little tangents in class and wastes 10 minutes waitng for people to anwser questions that they obviously dont know the anwsers too. if you get lewis change classes immediately!!!
She was horrible. I almost quite pre-med because of her!I studied for weeks for her tests...and I still got a C in her class. Everytime I see her my blood boils. Her tests were unnaturally cruel and her classes were mandatory, but completely useless. SAVE YOURSELF AND GET OUT OF HER CLASS!If you stay, plan on devoting your life to a gen ed class!
This teacher has an uncanny ability to make you think that you understand the material during class. The second you leave class, however, you're clueless. Study hard, do the homework, and go to your tutors. Good curve.
The concepts aren't too hard to understand, and the homework assignments can be time consuming, but are pretty easy. Her tests are harder than Purcell, but are pretty fair.
Lewis has been teaching for so many years that she has forgotten how to actually teach in a way that students could understand the concepts and actually learn CHM. She is definitely a bad professor who doesn't care for her students, I'm impressed UM, such an expensive university, has such a bad professor. An A is not impossible if you study a lot.
I thought she did a good job teaching chemistry. She used different ways of explaining the material to help everyone understand the concepts on the tests. She's not an easy teacher but it's definitely do-able. Go to the workshops and you will be fine.
not hard if you show up to class. she uses examples and drawings to help comprehension. study for tests and actually do the homework and her class is a breeze.
Fairly easy class not too much work but attendance is mandatory and trust me I wished it wasn't, she is so boring but she thinks she's funny other than that study her notes and you'll do fine tests can be tricky always ends test with the last question being a poem...
DR LEWIS IS ONE OF THE HARDEST, IF NOT THE HARDEST CHM TEACHER AT UM. HER IN CLASS TEACHING HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THE EXAM AND THE ONLY WAY TO DO WELL ON THE EXAM IS TO DO A PRACTICE ONE. NOTES DONT MEAN A THING, THEY ONLY HELP WITH FURTHER REITERATION. SHE TEACHES IN A WAY WHERE SHE THINKS EVERYONE TOOK AP CHEM. I DNT GET IT! Y B TRICKY!!!!
horrible professor. you teach yourself everything.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! Those who say that is easy, probably took AP Chem, or are just naturally smart with Chem, or are auto sufficient, selfish people that only care about being the best, and have no sense of solidarity . If you're not a chem person STUDY a lot for the class. She is not completely annoying, want-to-hate kind of person.
DO NOT TAKE HER!! you have to teach yourself everything, tricky test questions, curve doesnt help at all, she overcomplicates everything in the lecture. Unless you want to study like a mad man by yourself, go to tutors, go to workshops, make chemistry your life and maybe you'll pass!
The truth about Lewis: Her tests are hard and the only way to get a good grade (if you did not take AP Chem) is to do the practice tests and do the homeworks at least twice. Test problems are related to HW and previous tests but you HAVE to PRACTICE. I had an ARC tutor and went to workshop/class but still struggled. Ran out of time during the tests
Hard class and extremely difficult tests. Notes are pretty much useless. Only way to do good in class is to practice her old test but she took them off premed 411.
This class is ridiculously hard. Notes are pretty much useless, she gives pointless pop attendance quizzes. The tests are pretty much word problems. And the first day of class she tells you, "if you didn't take AP, you've got a lot of work to do." I wanted to study chemistry before this class, now I want nothing to do with it.
Great person. If you attend class and study her notes and practice the problems she does in class you should be fine.
Dr. Lewis is a fantastic professor! She teaches the material thoroughly and gives you all the tools you need to do well in her class. Practice, practice, practice and an A is possible!
Moves very fast but is helpful during office hours.
Dr. Lewis is a great teacher, however, it's like any other college lecture. She gives you all the information you need (no book for this class) but if you don't study and practice the problems (a lot) then you won't pass. A couple of random attendance quizzes but they don't count much - but if you want to pass you need to go to class!
Dr. Lewis makes her tests pretty tough, but she teaches very well. You should go to class and write down everything she writes down on the board, study it and know how to do different types of problems. If you practice enough, it shouldn't be too bad.
Lewis says from day1: dont buy the book. Her tests are straight from her notes. Only class I never skipped. Helps if you took AP Chem, then its a breeze. She's funny & sarcastic, tells you all the tricks to ace her exams.Random attendance quizzes, so attendance=mandatory.Hw is easy & mandatory.Great teacher, you actually learn in her class!TAKE HER!
Do not take honors chem 1 with lewis! Find easier honors courses to take. The regular class got multiple choice exams, while we had to write out all of our exams. Unnecessarily difficult and although she gives partial credit, she is a hard grader. Her exams are too long for the time given, rarely could finish! Oh and mandatory attendance
Unless you had a solid high school chemistry background do not take her. She expects you to know a lot of things for a basic 100 level course. Never uses the book and her notes jump from ch 1 to ch 9 then to 3 and to 24. It's impossible to study on your own with book notes, so if you dont take excellent class notes you are screwed. Bad teacher.
Lewis is one of my favorite professors! Shes tough but shes excellent! WAY BETTER than Purcell (you wont learn with him). Take her if you really want to learn chemistry. Don't buy the book, her tests are based off lecture and she does an excellent job teaching. Attendance is mandatory.
no no no
This is supposed to be an Intro to CHM class. Yet, she (and the whole dep't) expect you to have taken AP CHM back in HS. If you didn't take AP Chem in HS, you're SOL since you won't understand anything at all. IF you took AP CHM, you're well off. I personally lost all interest in CHM after this - didn't take AP in HS. Very disappointed in the dept
This woman enjoys the misery of other people. She loves nothing more than to see a room of students fail her stupid tests. She's the only professor who doesn't go over homework, give a review before a test or have a text book to read - because she WANTS you to fail. For the love of god, DONT TAKE HER. She's probably giggling reading this comment.
Very hard class to take if you do not have a solid background of chemistry. She expects you to know a lot of what she teaches, so she will skip steps and assume that you know it (and if you don't she will tell you to take a $40 online course ALEKS) So try to avoid taking her.
Very Very difficult tests!!!!! However, her lectures were interesting. Make sure you know how to do hmwk problems cause a lot of test questions come from the hmwk. If you don't have a strong Chm background you will have to work really hard. This class is very difficult, but you do learn.
very clear teacher. Straightforward gives homework assignments weekly, multiple choice. Test are all mc and she pretty much covers everything on the tests in the lecture.
I don't know what people are talking about. She is the EASIEST science professor at UM. The tests are EXACTLY like the homework and example problems from class. It can't get easier than that. And her notes are so organized and crystal clear, she literally spoon feeds you the material. Dont need book.I highly recommend this class if you want easy A.
I have no idea where these negative ratings are coming from. She's a GREAT lecturer and is willing to help you out. The tests are really not bad at all. They come entirely from the lecture and homework problems (the book is not needed). If you take good notes and study hard, you'll get an A. Also, go to class. She does random attendance quizzes.
The lectures are straightfoward. The notes she gives are given word for word on the board. You have homework and it counts toward your grade. The tests follow the homework, but the questions are more difficult to follow and she often tries to trick you by always including the exception or something small and often overlooked. Ehh, she's ok.
Very straightforward teacher, not very difficult compared to other science teachers. Attendance is mandatory which can be annoying and there is hw.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS I never attended class which is probably why I did so poorly;however, when I did the notes she wrote on the board were very hard to follow. All the information on the test comes from the notes which she only writes on the board during class, no out side resources to help you.
Definitely one to avoid if you don't already have a strong background in college-level chemistry. I did all of the homework several times each, worked with a tutor, went to every workshop, did the remedial ALEKS thing and STILL struggled with her tricky exams.
Do not take her class!!! Her lectures are fine and fairly easy to understand, but she is incredibly arrogant and very unhelpful to students with questions. She talks down to students who ask her for help, and her grading system has a downward curve. It's useless to go to her for questions because she'll just insult you, rather than help you.
For the sake of your GPA and your dignity, do not take this class. No matter how much you suck up she will talk down to you. Makes you do ALEKS which is literally 10+ hour a week commitment.. for a HW grade. Many people, including myself, had to drop this class. Advisor even told me to write a letter to the dean about ALEKS cause it was so unfair.
This professor is the most arrogant and obnoxious person I have ever met. She'll put you down if you go to her for help. Completely disorganized, doesn't help students at all. Do NOT take her class.
Dr. Lewis was an extremely bad chemistry professor. She had no textbook so that you have to depend solely upon in class notes. She has homework due almost every night and dont even consider going to her for help. She gives attendance quizzes and is extremely paranoid of students cheating on every exam. Horrible teacher and a horrible class.
Her tests are difficult but doable and people have a problem with her grading on a bell curve, but they just don't understand what a bell curve is. ALEKS was not a problem for me; I usually went ahead. Like all classes, if you put enough time and effort you can manage a decent grade.
This is a class you need to study hard for. The tests aren't hard if you put time and effort into studying and thoroughly know the material. Tests never change, get old exams from someone. Also, the textbook is useless, don't even buy it. She's not a bad teacher, people just get mad because they do poorly because they don't study hard enough.
Dr. Lewis is a really good teacher. Just do all the homework problems and practice tests again and again, and go to class and workshops because you will learn how to do problems. Tests are hard, so make sure you study a lot.
She did things just to make our lives horrible. I got a raw 84% on one test and it was curved down to a C, spent 30+ hours doing mandatory Aleks online assignments, she tried to get us with attendance quizes several days in a row. Final curve ended up being beneficial though.
real bell curve sucks. brought down my grade. majority of class will get a C. ALEKS is awful but can be helpful. didnt learn anything in class. workshop taught me almost everything. shes overly paranoid about attendance and cheating. will make tests harder if people do "too well". overall i did not like her and hated her teaching style.
She is not approachable unless you prove yourself to be a genius in her eyes. Otherwise she has this cold attitude towards you. She makes her tests curve so only 1 or 2 students get an A on the test even if you actually received an A on it, only the highest grades will get an A. There's no reason to put yourself through her misery.
Her tests were unnecessary hard. General chemistry is a cool subject, but she'll make you hate it as the semester progresses. She's a nasty person and will be condescending if you ask for help. The insane bell curve makes all your grades relative to your classmates and not so much to your studying. Very few people get As, just the top 5%.
An absolutely wretched excuse for a human being. She is one of the most condescending people I have ever met. Her tests were impossible (and yes, I did study a lot). You are much better taking Purcell (even though he is extremely boring). Taking Lewis will competely tank your GPA.
Dr. Lewis is needlessly condescending. She is antagonistic when dealing with people who don't understand and yet she isn't clear in class. There is no text book, so you have to go purely off her notes - which are insubstantial. If you can take the class with another teacher, do so. You need extreme patience and an abundance of time to do well here.
She is unclear and deviates when explaining. The book is optional and her notes are just not enough. There are three tests plus the final and they are all very hard. She does give attendance quizzes although attendance is not mandatory. I think she's nice but just don't like her teaching methods.
She teaches clearly and has a very simple organization on her blackboard course documents. If you do the Exercises, Homework, and then Old tests, there is no reason you shouldn't get an A. Since this is a weed-out class for pre-meds people get mad when they find it difficult, yet this is among the easiest of courses premeds will take.
Lewis is extremely clear with what she's going to test on and exactly how to solve each problem. Print off her notes from blackboard and take additional notes on those pages, so that you don't waste time copying down things she has typed up. Go to class and redo the homework and practice test before you take the tests and you will easily get an A.
She's a good teacher. She tells you exactly what you need to know for the exams, which are based heavily on the HW, notes, and Practice Test. There were times when I had to see a tutor or consult the book to clarify material, though. She's not a cheerful person, but she is pretty funny in a sarcastic, demeaning way. Start studying early.
I learned a lot from Lewis's class. She does have a sarcastic attitude and is not very approachable. However, paying attention in class, doing the homeworks and the practice tests, was enough to do well con the exams. The exams are challenging but doable. She does go a bit too fast in class, but nothing crazy.
Not the greatest teacher, but certainly not the worst. As other reviewers have put it, if you redo the HW, go to workshops, and study the past exams she puts up on Blackboard, there is absolutely no reason you should get lower than a B in this class.
good professor
Lewis can be tough but she is a fair grader and your grade is based off of a curve. She's nice when you go to her office hours and she's really specific about what you're going to be tested on.
She was hell for me as a freshman. I study 2 weeks before exams just to get a C or a B. Although, her classes were really clear and I learned a lot with her. Do all of her homework and exercises and you probably will be fine. DO NOT miss her classes. Attendance is not mandatory.
Greatest Professor I've ever met! She will put almost all her lecture notes on Blackboard. Although the test is not very easy but also not pretty hard. Class attendance is not mandatory but it's better to attend on her class. If you'll do more extra work for preparing the exam, I believe getting A is not pretty hard.
She expects you to already know chemistry from when you enter the room.
As long as you attend class and review the notes, you wont have fundamental problems with solving the chemistry questions but it is true that you do have to study a lot in detail and for a long time to actually get a good grade on tests. She will say a lot of times in class that you should be able to do the homework problems multiple times.
Lewis is a nice person but her tests are incredibly difficult, especially the final. There is just too much to know.
If you study exactly how she says to, there's no reason you should get less than a B. She tells you exactly what you need to do and will use questions in the exact format of in class problems, homework, and old exams she provides. She is sarcastic and condescending, but her class isn't hard if you put in the work. She gives a strong chemistry base.
This professor is not one that I suggest. Her classes don't help with understanding the material and chemistry isn't like Bio where you can just read yourself. You need to understand the concepts and she doesn't help at all. 3 tests and a final. Tough, so try to study your best. She gives attendance quizzes worth 5% of the grade. Hard class overall
If you go to class, do the homeworks, and study with the homeworks and past tests, there is no reason that you shouldn't get an A. She may seem harsh in class, but go to her during office hours and she is beyond helpful.
Certainly explains everything in class but the lectures are very boring so it's hard to process everything after a while. Still the tests are fair but pretty hard. Attendance quizzes show up too so attend class! I do feel that I have learned a lot and have a good understanding of chem after taking this class though. Would recommend!
The lecture is super clear and homework is not much. It definitely prepares you well for tests and finals as long as you go to classes and do the homework.
She was little to no help. If you have class during her office hours (like I did), good luck trying to meet with her. She refused to help me over email or set up an appointment out of her assigned office hours. Her tests are ridiculously challenging and she does nothing to help you prepare. I did not miss a class and studied a ton still got aC+.
If you are considering taking pre-med: BEWARE! I myself thought I could handle it, but now I am extremely regretting my decision. (See Dr. Knecht for Chemistry of the Biosciences- people have told me its an AMAZING class and its relevant). This class is doable if you do all of her homework, read the notes, and attend class. Study hard!
she ruined my first semester. honestly if you can take anyone else for chm 111 do it. I dropped and now have a w. im one of those people who went to every lecture and optional discussion and the first exam killed me. not worth it.
A tough class that you really have to work for that a. does random attendance quizzes. weekly hw assignments however, if you go to class, do the homework, go to chem workshops, go to chem resource center, do extra practice tests, and really study you can get the a. everything is based on a curve which is the best part if you do everything you learn
Good teacher, kind person. However, she grades your whole mark on the curve so unless you are really smart (or just have some really dumb people in the class) you probably wont get an A which is pretty unfair.
If you go to every single class and pay attention you will most likely understand the mathematical exercises(which is about 90% of the course) However, the homework that she assigns is a lot harder than the excersises she explains in class and those are the ones that you will have on your tests. Studied my ass off and probably getting a C.
Everyone is quick to bash on Dr. Lewis because her lectures are long and she's pretty specific about what she wants, however I made mistakes in the beginning of the year (i.e. not devoting enough time to this class) and got bad grades, and when I wanted to fix it she was there to help me.
Dr. Lewis is not easy, but she does have a way of making you understand the material in class. Go to her optional discussions, they are really helpful in covering the hard questions that will likely be on the tests. Exam curves are harsh but the final curve is more generous.
One of the hardest classes at UM. Dr. Lewis grades this class on a bell curve, where the majority of students receive a C. Exams are notoriously difficult and are much harder than the assigned homework. Be prepared to work and study very hard. If you have a background in chemistry, you might be at an advantage. Would not recommend.
Only got an A only because I have a very strong chemistry background, could beat the group discussion guy, no sweat (he's really bad). However, her tests are ridiculous, sometimes cover stuff I wouldn't even call chemistry. If you have never learned anything about chemistry before taking her class, drop it ASAP, or it's unlikely to end well.
Dr. Lewis has a bad reputation, but I promise you'll learn a lot in this class. Her lectures are clear cut and she tells you exactly what she expects from you and how each problem should be done. Tests closely resemble practice exams, and there aren't any curveballs. Thoroughly enjoyed the class.
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. She is the worst person in history. She curves a lot, but that is because her exams are ridiculously tough. Nobody has gotten 100 on any of her exams this semester. The avg grade on each test has not been passing. The avg on the most recent exam was the worst of all, so she is making that information a big chunk of the final
Worst professor at UM. Since all non-premeds must take her for CHM111, it is would be worth switching to the premed track and then dropping just to avoid Lewis. Her notes are incomplete and don't bother asking questions because she won't know the answer. Sometimes she would get confused halfway through teaching and have to start the concept over.
Lewis is a great lecturer, she does a great job of explaining the concepts and gives step by step examples. Attendance is not mandatory, but if you do not go to class you will not do well on the tests. If you need help she will give it. The exams are hard as hell, but if you do the work and go to class you will do okay. She gives a generous curve.
An absolutely awful teacher. For some reason this semester she decided to try a flipped classroom, and it simply doesn't work. Hardly goes over concepts in enough detail in class because she expects you to just know everything from reading her notes online. Homework is hard, misses discussion sections, exams are hard... Overall an awful class.
She gives you all the materials you need to do well in this course, but her teaching style can be difficult to understand. You can tell she's passionate about chemistry, which is important. The tests are pretty difficult, but she has a great curve. The only problem is that the curve can bring down your grade if you are slightly above average.
THIS CLASS IS POSSIBLY THE WORST DECISION I EVER MADE MY FRESHMAN YEAR. I HAD TO DROP BEFORE I FAILED IT. SHE DECIDED TO TRY A FLIPPED CLASSROOM AND BARELY TEACHES ANYTHING. SHE SPENDS CLASS TIME GOING OVER USELESS PROBLEMS. WHEN SHE GIVES YOU TESTS TO STUDY WITH I SUGGEST YOU STUDY HARD AND LEARN THE CONCEPTS NOT MEMORIZE THEM. LEARNED 0 CHEMISTRY
She is an incredible professor. You do need to have some chemistry background, which may seem unreasonable for an intro chemistry class, but once you are up to speed, there's no problem. Her methodical approach to gen-chem as well as her problem solving tricks will last you a lifetime.
She doesn't give good feedback when you ask a question. Talks down to students. Quizzes are very difficult. Overall not a very helpful or happy professor. If you have the option I would recommend another professor
She is a very nice woman but her teaching style is terrible. She gives points off for the smallest details. VERY hard and nothing about the lab is clear. 1 lab report per week, 2 lab quizzes per week.
Took her as my lab teacher and she told you everything you needed to know. Shes a tough grader so make sure you do everything she says to do.
Lord help you if you take this class. She couldn't be less efficient in the 3-hour lab. Makes you jump through hoops just for a C due to unclear grading policies you learn as you go. Math problems have to show every single step just like a first-grader. If you get the right answer but don't follow every overbearing step you get a 0. 0/10 awful
"Nita Lewis is the best professor I have ever had" ... said no one ever. I have PTSD from this class. You get points off from being too accurate. You get points off from being not accurate enough. She thinks she's funny. She's not. She thinks she teaches well. She doesn't. Worst experience of my life. Including fluids. She probably likes horses.
Nita Lewis is an amazing professor, she really cares about the students and that they learn. In class she may seem a bit careless but if you go to her office hours she's extremely helpful. This woman can seriously teach. As long as you go to her office hours you should be fine!
Probably the worst lab professor I've ever had. It's a 1 credit lab and she makes it way harder than it should be. She does not understand technology or blackboard in the slightest, and if you experience any sort of technical difficulty during a quiz she claims it isn't her fault and you get a 0. The way she runs the course is unreasonable. 0/10
By far the worst teacher I've ever had. Majority of my points lost were due to "bad form" which means not formatting my answers correctly. She blames all the problems in the class on you or problems with black board. Do not ask for help, just hope you aren't failing by the time the semester ends.
DO NOT TAKE HER. I have NEVER HATED a class more in my life. You can do all the work and still get a 0 because you messed up in" good form" and "sig figs". she gives no partial credit. I had her for A LAB which is supposed to be simple but it was the most complicated thing ever. She's horrible with technology and disorganized
If you ever imagined what hell would be like, take this class. Each lab starts with a quiz about specific details from the lab manual, which was harshly graded and as much as one decimal off would cost the whole question. For the labs itself, she will be of little assistance with questions about procedure or whether your doing the lab right. Awful
Worst professor ever. Stresses the littlest thing and doesn't take responsibility for anything. Avoid at all costs
Big hard no. Can't reach her by email or office, she is tenure so none of our complaints were considered from the chem dept. Work with your peers, you will need as much teamwork as possible. Create a group chat for this class because it's gonna be a RIDE. If you show up and do work, you will get around B grade, but also lose your mind like 10 times
Avoid this class at all costs - the professor is an absolute nightmare. Try using Unstuck ai and working with peers to survive this course. Wishing you the best of luck!
