Awesome professor. Make class interestingly fun. Well organized, well prepared, funny, open to questions, and approachable. Awesome lab class to take. He is bad a$$ like quartz.
Fun class and very nice teacher -- he wants to see students succeed and will bend over backwards to make it happen.
He is the best teacher I have ever had...hands down! Very informative, kind, and entertaining at the same time. Shows tremendous concern for students and wants everyone to do well. I highly recommend taking a course from Professor Hughes! He's pretty cute too, if you like the science nerd type ;)
Mr.Hughes is the best teacher I've ever taken at MJC.A great thing about him is that he is more than eager to help anyone that asks.He really enjoys his work and it shows. If you need to take this class or are just interested in Earth Science I would definately recommend Mr. Hughes.I wish all the teachers at MJC were like him!!!!!!
He is a very cool guy, and is very helpful to all students. All the questions for the final and the midterm came straight from the his lectures or from questions from the readings. There are two group projects which were pretty easy. I recommend this class, probably the coolest teacher I've had at MJC.
He's so animated, too bad his lectures are boring zzz...I only went to 5 lectures the whole semester, and got the notes from someone that went to class all the time. Ended up with a B. Study for the midterm, final and do all of your labs and you'll be fine.
Mr Hughes is a GREAT teacher! He really cares about his students and helping them succeed. He really cares that you learn the concepts that hes teaching you. I'm going to take his other class, Intro to Weather and Climate. I would reccomend him to anyone looking for an interesting science class.
it's like 6th grade all over again. And I mean that in a good way. Very easy and fun teacher that might inspire you to be a teacher yourself. His labs aren't the easiest but if you ask for help he'd be glad to help! All tests are from lectures discussed in lecture and labs done in labs.
Excellent teacher--but keep in mind that there's 3 hours of lab time a week, and you can't afford to miss a lab. His tests are short answer tests...very rarely does he use Scantron. Still, I would take a class from him again.
Highly recommend this teacher I took his class and got an A. All he has is two projects. His midterm and final are in short answer form that come straight from the lecture and some from the reading. Good teacher very nice and willing to help out.
Ok so this teacher is not only the best ever he's sooo cute!!!!!!!! i loved him me and a couple of my friends took his class and totaly passed! he is such a great teacher he is clear and if you do the labs and the projects you'll get an A for sure! i love him!!! i wished he teached different classes! so TAKE HIM!!!!!
He is one of the best professors I have had! It is so interesting, and he is so enthusiastic about it. He does tend to talk a lot, but it is not boring at all. There are only two tests: the midterm and the final. The labs are fairly simple, and he expects you to do a little bit of writing in an "academic journal." He is an awesome professor!
This teacher is god sent. Not only will he get you into the subject, but you'll learn too. He's an amazing teacher, and if I wasn't so in love with history I would become a scientist of some sort (maybe not that extream). Plus he's not bad to look at either.
Class expectations are very clear. Very easy class if you attend. Hes easy on the eyes, which is always a plus.
Noah is awesome and so clear on expectations and material that if you don't get an A in this course, it's because you didn't do the work. I really really enjoyed the class because he made it interesting and showed his passion in teaching this course. He was always around if you needed help or clarification. Cutie Putie too. :-) Wish he taught more!
Mr. Hughes is helpful, friendly and concerned about his students. He makes a challenging subject fun & interesting.
Noah is an awesome professor!!!If you're looking for a fun and interesting science class, then take him!!!!he's very reasonable and understanding. plus he's not bad to look at either. Mrs. Hughes should be proud! :)
Great Prof. I learned a lot from him. He's the best prof. I've had. He gives a lot of extra credit that can help your grade. Do all your labs you'll be fine. Science is not my best subject, and I still got a good grade. I HIGHLY RECOMEND HIM!!!!
Geeky, goofy, and entertaining. Show up and take notes, study them, and you'll do fine. He tells you what to know, and grades mid-term and final harshly, so be prepared!
Great teacher and fun class. Made the class interesting even for those who might not be that interested in Rocks. Just keep up to date with your weekly journal and notes, and study for mid-term and final.
Great teacher! Everyone has to take him!! He's fun, down-to-earth, relates to his students, and so knowledgeable about Meteorology that it's very easy to understand and learn!
best teacher ive ever had. makes cls very interesting. labs can be abit challengin but he provides ans to check. Lects helps understand labs better. only 2 exms-midsem and final. final is litl challengin not 2 difficult if u study.1 poster project (its fun) w/group &a grp presentn. every lab cls 2 articles relatd to easc write up due.criteri given
This was such a fun class..noah was one of the best professor's i have had, he knows what he is talking about and relates it to his students so it isn't boring, anyone who takes earth science has to take it with hughes!
At first I really liked this teacher. His labs were a bit tedious but the lectures were always entertaining. Then near the end of the semester for some reason he stopped accepting my work. Has a bit of an attitude. The class was alright. I didn't learn anything though.
If you want to do a ton of work this class is great (NOT) I would never take this instructor again or recommend him. He expects way too much out of his students. Expect 2 hours of homework for every hour in class. 4 hour class. Also has 2 group projects. I have more homework in his class than all my other 3(14credits) classes combined.
He is a great teacher, he makes the class fun and teaches you alot, you learn a lot about rocks and weather and other things related that you never cared about, but he makes you laugh and actually learn the stuff. Just do the homework the weekly homework and do the lab and you'll past, test are a fair and you could past even if you do bad on test.
hughes was great. he expects a decent amount from his students, but it is not overwhelming at all. anyone who thinks this class is too hard is clearly lazy. just do your homework and study a little for the tests and you're good.
Very Helpful.
Hughes is definitely one of the best teachers at MJC! I struggle with science overall and have never liked physical sciences in the past. He has such a laid back, interesting way of teaching that you can't help but like his course. It's work, but you can easily get an A by showing up and doing your work. I would recommend this class to anyone!!
I'm ready to graduate and can easily say that Hughes is the best of the best at MJC!! He's very approachable, great at lecturing, and has reasonable expectations. I never thought rocks & minerals could be so cool!
Hughes is a great teacher i was really avoiding this class thinking it was going to be terrible but he really made it fun, hes a down to earth guy thats really easy on the eyes lol and really willing to help with anyone thats willing to learn but hes also one of those teachers that grades by you get what you earn, his work isnt hard just long!!
Professor Hughes is very helpful and makes his lectures and labs easy to follow and entertaining. I recommend his class to anyone who wants to have a good time and learn a lot about earth and the geology of California. Great field trip as well.
Took an oceanography class with him and had a blast! Its a difficult subject to understand, however he makes the lessons and important topics crystal clear. He gives the study guides to every test and lab quiz. Offers extra credit every week. He is funny and a normal, cool guy. He cares about his students and knows everyone by name. TAKE HIM!!
i love noah hughes! he's fair and it's a bonus that he's cute too. may come off cold at first, but that's just because this is his job! exams were heavy in material, but he lectures well, which is why attendance is mandatory for an A. i really enjoyed the class, only a bonus that the fieldtrips are awesome too.
Hands down one of the best teachers I have ever had He makes the material very understandable as well as interesting I even found myself explaining and pointing out things I had learned in class to my bf when we were in SF You need to show up and pay attention in class but if you do that you'll pass no problem Take him! His field trip is a blasttoo
Such a great teacher! The tests are easy as are the labs. You get a lab group and you guys work together. Noah is great and he helps clear anything up you don't understand. Easiest science class I have taken at MJC, hands down. I was worried about taking science, but this was easy. If you are worried about science or hate science, take this class.
He is an awesome teacher! He teaches in many different ways. In doing this, he meets many student's educational goals.
Hughes is a really entertaing and fun teacher. He's really straightforward on what you need to do to pass the class and he'll tell you how to get a good grade. The one thing is that participation counts for almost half of your grade so its important to attend and be involved. All in all, though, I really recommend him.
I HIGHLY recommend taking this class. His lectures are wonderful. He makes things very clear for everyone, and challenges you if you want to go deeper. The work load is very reasonable, but I recommend keeping up on the reading. This course is for anyone and everyone and you will learn a ton without even knowing it!
I loved this class. Prof Hughes is an amazing teacher & he really loves what he teaches. The course material isn't the easiest but he is very helpful and wants his students to succeed. He makes the class interesting. There's also a field trip at the end of the semester to Monterey which is a blast!
Great Professor!! The study guides are very important! And the sample labs are just like the test!
Do the study guides, they're long but are exactly how the tests are. There are two lecture and lab exams, and one final exam on lab and lecture which is just like the other four. He can get off topic during lecture and doesn't go over the study guides, but overall easy class.
Hughes is a great professor! He has a true passion for Earth Science, which makes you want pay attention. Their is a study guide for every chapter, for which he goes over the answers in lecture. Labs are pretty easy; do the PRE-LABS and ONLINE work and you'll be golden! Honestly, your grade will reflect on the workeffort you give.
Hughes is fabulous! It's so nice to have a class where everything is so well planned. It really shows that he enjoys what he does and makes you enjoy it more too. He def knows his stuff but remains very down to earth. (haha) There is online hw and an article summary due each week. There is a lab and study guide done in class each week so don't skip
I was intimidated the first day but it turns out he's a cool teacher and helps as much as he can and he gives extra credit take it because it's not a breeze through class but it's doable
I was scared the first day but his class is not too bad he is nice and is a funny guy he is very helpful and offers extra but take it you will most likely need it if you do not read it study I recommend
Hands down the best teacher at MJC. Makes you want to learn, attend class, and ask questions. He wants you to succeed. Only thing I wish would be changed is the amount of items that you are required to print each week.
Professor Hughes is a fantastic teacher. He is very laid back and easy to approach, which puts the students at ease. He is very knowledgeable about his subject. One of the best parts of this class is the field trip at the end. Awesome class. I would take more classes with him.
Hughes was the most passionate teacher I've ever taken at MJC. This guy really knows what he's talking about and tries his best to make it interesting. Make sure you do all of your work, try to read before because that helps a lot during lecture and take good notes and you'll pass his class! I would and wish I could take him again for another class
He is a fantastic professor!! Highly recommended. He is very organized and follows his syllabus very closely. He is very nice and wants his students to succeed and will help you if you have any questions. He is also very passionate about what he teaches. Do the weekly assignments and attend class and you'll get a good grade.
I took this class during the summer and pass easily. He goes around the classroom during labs making sure everyone understands the material. Although in his lectures, he talks a lot, some material is interesting. Take good notes, or the tests will be hard. Throughout the class you can see he is super passionate about Earth Science.
Hughes was just one amazing Professor, hands down. He's passionate about his field, is very open and friendly (we often talked outside), and more than anything, he wants you to succeed. His lectures are basic repeats of the reading assignments (I played Minecraft), but he more than makes up for it in the labs. Cameras are better than copying boards
Prof. Hughes is an awesome guy! He is very passionate about the subject and is really there to help students! I would definitely take him again.
Terrible. lectures are long and confusing, does not take the time to help you out. VERY Judgmental. Never had such a horrible professor in my years here.
Noah Hughes is a great teacher! He's passionate about the field of Geology and all Earth Sciences. His lectures tend to get a little jumbled, but they aren't bad or tough to follow. Just LISTEN. Take notes, attend every lecture, do all assignments and every lab and you will succeed. Great teacher and truly inspiring!
Prof. Hughes made this class very interesting especially for someone who doesn't enjoy science. He's funny, helpful, and informative. Don't skip the class and you'll definitely need the book. Do the homework and you'll pass. He does let you make a "cheat sheet" for all tests. DO THIS Would take his class again.
Great professor. Very helpful throughout the course. I personally enjoy earth science so I thought this was an awesome class with an awesome professor. Definitely would recommend to anyone needing this class for general ed.
One of the best teachers I have taken at mjc. He is funny and his lectures are interesting. Homework is not hard if you read the textbook, and in order to pass the exams you should do the study guide questions and do a cheat sheet if he allows it.
One of my top two favorite professors that I've had so far. His use of analogies and diagrams/drawings makes the material really easy to relate to and understand. There is a lot of weekly busy work due including article summaries, lab prep worksheets, and study guide questions, but it is not difficult. Approved "cheat sheets" allowed for exams.
His class does have lots of work but if you do your work you will have a good grade! Article summary, mastering geology, and prelab assignment every week . He gives study guides and the questions on it are on the test! He lets you use 1 page front and back written by you for the test! he's amazing and passionate about his job . You won't regret it
Professor Hughes is an awesome professor and human being. Simply put, he is THE BEST professor I have ever had. They guy truly cares about his students. Plus, he is freakin' hilarious.
Extra credit opportunities throughout semester. Field trip in March. Allows crib sheets for all exams. HW is article summaries, online hw, pre-labs. 3 exams, final included, not tested on entire semesters material for final. He is very passionate about earth science and teaching, you will learn a lot in his class. Grades quickly.
He loves Earth Science. Takes roll every lecture. He never lets you out early always keeps you till the end. Gives 3 test for both lecture and labs but allows one sheet of paper as a cheap sheet. Test are not difficult. A writing assignment, a chapter test, and a pre-lab assignment is due each week. There is a field trip that is required.
Professor Hughes is very passionate about his job which makes the class more interesting than it actually is. He doesn't like questions, he gets frustrated at students who have questions about what they are doing. What upset me the most was his grading, he would grade groups differently even if they have the same exact answers. (Avoid If Possible)
Professor Hughes made earth science pretty fun. This class isn't hard to pass. Out of 6 exams (3 lab,3 lecture) I failed 4 and still earned a B. There is homework due every lab meeting, and online homework due before lecture as well. It gets annoying, but DO ALL THE HOMEWORK. Easy points, and it will make up for failing the exams. Would recommend.
Professor Hughes is an amazing teacher! All you really need to focus on when doing earth science is to do the homework and the article summaries. Focus on completing the online homework and article summaries early so that your not stressing over them.
I really wanted to drop the class once i hear all we needed to have done every week, but I didn't. It's not really much, the only thing that might take up a log of time is doing the study guide which I got lazy on and it did come back to haunt me. It's not hard to pass this class as long as you really try. Actually be openminded and excited to learn
Class was great, he is very passionate about the subject. Tests are HARD. It never mattered how hard I studied, I never got an A on a single test. He is a wonderful teacher, I just feel that if you take him, you NEED to study every day to pass the tests.
Cancelled our field trip 1st because the football players got our bus instead. After we already payed. Then it was cancelled due to air quality. He went on strike & then bombed us with assignments the day after. Super homework heavy. Keeps you the entire class Pretty sure he doesnt read article summaries, I started turning in old ones hasnt noticed
Professor Hughes was an amazing professor! he really cares about his students and the subject he teaches. He is very easy going, funny, and a pleasure to be around overall really chill. There is kind of a work load but it helps to keep your grade up, HIGHLY RECOMMEND FOR EARTH SCIENCE 161
Hate science, but if you turn in all your hw and go to every lab you'll pass. failed every test with D's(they are Hard!) and long, but still passed. lectures are boring but its science. lol
Mr. Hughes is really passionate about science and makes Earth science fun. He wants everyone to understand how amazing our planet is. The homework is online and is time-consuming, but worth it because it helps you understand the material better by looking for the answers in the book. Tests are not hard and will help you prepare for the exam.
The professor was extremely helpful, gave good feedback, and was pretty funny in a scientific way. If I could retake his class, I would, but I do have to transfer after this semester.
He made me appreciate the class so much. He made it fun. To pass this course please do all your hw is not even bad. Attendance is part of your grade. Study for exam the lecture notes and study guides and you'll be fine.
Absolutely one of my favorite professors at MJC. He is extremely intelligent but is obviously stoked to spread it. From what I gathered, he LOVES questions and interactions in the lab room and lecture hall. A totally rad professor. Just do your article summaries, labs, pre-labs, and PARTICIPATE! Even if you're wrong he likes to know you're there!
Makes it his mission to ensure that all students are doing well & understanding the content, especially during COVID-19. Obviously, it is important to make sure you are doing your best. Participation matters, especially for labs. One of the best professors I have had, caring, hilarious, respected, and offers extra credit. You can't fail.
This professor is the best at his job. Never met a professor who cares, and shows interest with the students. I hate science, but this man helped me see It differently. I learned so much in this class. Best I Ever Had - Drake .
I took ESC-5 with Professor Hughes during the 1st summer session at Columbia College in 2001. Yes, I am aware my review is a bit late. However, the education I received via Professor Hughes's instruction has both stood the test of time and has further solidified in the 21 years since I took his course. Those are two fitting definitions for geology.
Prof. Hughes was amazing. Throughout our semester he made his expectations very clear. He is super flexible, and all around just a great teacher. The assignments are not hard, they just take a little time. Every lab and assignment he gave feedback on what was good or what needed to be changed if anything. Would highly recommend to take his class
Great guy! Made the class really interesting, always approachable and understanding. Labs each week are very easy, if you work well with your group you can be done in an hour. Rubrics are always very clear and everything is well organized. Quizzes and exams are easy and there's only 3 exams for the semester. Don't skip the field trip, it's fun!
I would take this class again. I liked the materials and the way it was presented. Every week we had set tasks and worked within our set lab group. Testing and quizzes weren't full of surprises. Professor is very easy going and explains things in a way students can understand. Overall great professor.
I took Hughes' Earth Science as my first in-person class in college. I really doubt there's an easier Science class at MJC. Hughes was easily the chillest professor I have ever had. The labs were extremely easy to follow, and his lectures were straightforward as well. Exams were quite easy to prepare for and the questions were very simple.
I took Professor Hughes' class in Spring 2024. Great experience! I'm a techie, but he ignited in me an appreciation for Earth Science. Even now—as someone who goes to a university in SoCal—I like to visit Dos Rios, the state park that opened a few months after I graduated MJC, when I come see my parents during break. The class labs are a joy to do
Professor Hughes is such an understanding person and makes science understandable for beginners. Taking a climate change course has been very eye opening and I'm glad I got to learn a lot from this class with Hughes. Even though I really dislike science he made this course very easy to understand.
Professor Hughes is great, making an effort to be friendly and connected with the students, and is very accommodating. There is little homework, most of your score comes from your group labs, and he really wants you to succeed, offering lots of extra credit. There was one required field trip, but it was fun and everyone who went was happy they did.
Professor hughes was nice and helpful. I really liked that everything in the lab was group work it was nice to work with other people and make friends. Lectures where not really my thing and confusing to me so exams were hard. He took us on a field trip to yosemite which was so cool
Hughes is a very awesome professor he teaches well with his lectures and labs are fun. I was lucky to have a awesome lab group because if you don't its gonna be rough. The only hard part are the Exams you have 3 study and write notes. Field trip was meh I was expecting better. Talk baseball with him (he loves it) and lets go Oakland Athletics!!!
I am taking Earth Science with professor Hughes in the Spring semester and he is incredible. The semester is almost over and it has been a great one. He is very passionate about his job. He genuinely cares for his students and aims for his class to be “passable”. Just do the assignments, which are not difficult with his teaching style.
I really liked Professor Hughes. He's a very kind and understanding professor. The labs are not difficult at all, he always provides great feedback. He drops your lowest grade in each category besides exams. Lectures can feel boring, but you can miss up to 6. Exams can be a little difficult, but there's only 3 of them. No busy work either!
A great professor who genuinely cares about his subject and his students.
