good teacher
Mr. Alvarado is a great teacher. I enjoyed being in his class,he was fun, and very helpful. I hope to take the next class with him.
Alvarado is a very good teacher. This is the second class i took with him and he makes the material easy to understand. I highly recommend him.
THIS CLASS WAS VERY DIFFICULT FOR ME....BUT HEY MAYBE IT'S NOT THE PROFESSOR....GOOD LUCK.
THE BEST MATH TEACHER ONE CAN HOPE FOR! RECOMMENDED!!! FUNNY, HAS DEEP KNOWLEDGE, ATTENTIVE TO STUDENTS! AWESOME OVERALL!!
I really liked his class. He was very helpful with all the material that he was teaching. I only wished that I could have finished his class. But other than that I thought he was a great teacher. I recommend you take his class because even if you are struggling he'll find a way to help you out. Unlike some other teachers, he wants you to pass.
wanna try to learn fun things? this is your class! watch out ladies...hint.
He was very nice, cool, and just an outstanding professor
noel was a pretty cool teacher. clean cut and trendy. sounds like a hispanic william shatner. teaching style; over complicates lesson, is neat, but skips steps. quizzes; somewhat difficult. exams; very difficult. this class is not for those looking for an easy A. recommend the MARC. study your butt off or take an easier prof.
Late to office hours, makes test difficult on purpose, will call on you on purpose, always seems to be in a hurry to go, arrives to class right on time
VERY SARCASTIC. took him in the winter and was stressed out all the time. i barely passed. do all the hwk. study hard. ask questions. try to surround yourself around other students who "get" the material. he's not easy. if you struggle with algebra or if you NEED to pass this class, take another prof. doesn't go by the text. good luck!
This class was one of my least favorite. He is not clear on what he wants, I agree with the other person who said he is sarcastic. Plays favorites in class and some girl from school says that he is in love with her...i dont like his teaching methods.MARC highly recommended... and take another teacher if possible.
Ya he could be sacastic but he was very helpful and I was able to understand him. His tests are a little hard. He is a cool chill guy. If i had to take another math class i would take his class.
HE his favorites, and if your not one of them, your bound to fail. He doesn't alow any help time. He acts as though your questions are NOT needed. I had to withdraw class, so I didn't fail, his class was so hard. DON'T TAKE HIM...
BEST TEACHER EVER! TELLS FUNNY STORIES ALL THE TIME! GOES OVER MATERIAL VERY WELL. HAD POTLUCK WEN WE HAD A REVIEW FOR A TEST. WILLING TO HELP. EASY! MAKES CLASS SOOOO MUCH FUN. DNT TAKE ANY OTHER TEACHER BUT HIM. LETS US USE NOTE CARD & GIVES XTR CREDIT FOR MARC. EASY A!
Worst instructor! Other comments on this site must have been written by him, nobody in our class likes him, most of us are failing. He is always late, always in a hurry, teaching style leaves alot to be desired. NEVER, NEVER, NEVER take this guy. He doesn't even qualify to be called a professor.
This professor is unique in his approach to teaching. Is not always clear, however, he is definitely willing to go above and beyond to help you help yourself. If you are failing his class it is a result of your own personal lack of committment to your studies. If you want an easy A this is not the class for you.VERY GOOD PROFESSOR!!!
He is not easy to follow. Give it time; do alot of studying on your own, Google other Stat websites for help; then you may have a chance. He wants students to pass and is VERY dramatic when people do poorly on tests. Wastes load of time talking rather than teaching. Needs more examples. Needs to prepare his board notes as hand-outs.
I liked his class. I got a C but hey i passed.SUPER CUTE!!!
he was really great...loved this teacher... he thinks he's funny but sometimes he may be...n he is hot....very helpful and fun class
teaching style loose, not from the text. Some people had trouble in class, I did not. Very clear on what is expected, how to get a grade, what you need to pass. Teaching methods worked for me.
At first I didn't like him, but he turned out to be alright. Make sure you do ALL your h.w. and study before the tests. He usually collected the h.w. on the day of each exam. Although I got a B in his class, this class was though and he doesn't cares whether you pass or not. Please do extra credit hrs. you will regret it if you don't.
math is math but hes a pretty good teacher
Great Teacher, explains material well, test easy, very helpful
He is ok, but he seems to pay more attention to girls. Especially those who flirt with him. Overall breaks down the material well.
I don't recommend anyone to take this professor. He was very rude to students that were not doing well in class and couldn't understand various topics on a number of occasions. During office hours he would show up five minutes before class started. Tests and exams were excruciatingly difficult. Became angry and defensive when questioned.
Took him for Spring 2011. At first he seemed like he was going to be very mean but he is not. Homework due day of the test & Class material was not really hard, i enjoyed the class and passed with a B!
this professor is cocky when you ask Questions he gives smart remarks . I dont recommend this class if you dont like rude people. he does explain but always with sarcastic answers.
This professor was very helpful, and very clear on what is going to be on the test. Test are a bit difficult but if you ask alot of questions and do the homework and turn the homework in on the day of the test you will do fine.
Does a good job explaining and elaborating on the information given. Hw is due day of test. Explains with clarity what exam includes, so listen up! DO NOT LET YOUR PHONE RING IN CLASS! you will get sent home! happen twice and nothing after. exactly why he does it. overall good professor.
He was really good and explained everything he expected from you. I took it in the summer and didn't purchase the book and got an A. I just reviewed his notes and I felt confident before exams. He seems tough but towards the end he is nicer. Such a good class!
He is pretty funny. BEWARE if he asks you to repeat the answer to a problem you just voiced aloud, it is most likely wrong. He loves to point out when people are wrong so he can explain why. He never asks someone to repeat something if it's right, he just moves on. Well traveled, make sure to ask him about it during class so he stalls.
Best math teacher I have ever had, and I hate math. Is sarcastic and does call people out when they are wrong but just to explain why it is they are wrong. Great at helping understand. I changed my major because of him. Take him! just do the work study and you'll be fine for the exams. Answers all questions and makes sense of them.
The worst professor I have ever taken. The subject is not hard, he is just a terrible professor. Do not take this man! I swear, most of these ratings are probably him talking about how wonderful he is. He is not. He words the exams differently. No one in my class finished the first exam. If you still take him, despite my warnings. You'll regret it
Attendance is important - he explains things much better than the textbook. About 15 problems of homework per section, 4 quizzes, 3 exams, 1 project(which isn't difficult), and final. Although not a lot of critical thinking is required in the material, there is a lot of material to memorize, so be prepared to study if you want a good grade.
One of the best teachers I've ever had for math. He does not require you to bring your book to class. He explains his lessons and does not just lecture. He is fun and there are no dull moments because he is on top of his lessons. He is very friendly and welcomes you to come and talk to him if you need help. He is passionate about teaching.
Trigonometry is hard but he made it clear. Just study and this class will be a breeze.
Professor Alvarado is one of the most inspiration professors I have ever had. His lectures are something to look forward to, and his joyful personality will motivate one to keep coming to his class. His methods of teaching allow anyone to understand and enjoy the math material. I highly recommend him for anyone taking math courses.
Took him during winter, don't get this class if you can't keep up with the very fast pace. He gives you assignments after assignments , the quizzes aren't too hard but the final exam will destroy you if you didn't study like crazy.
He's a cool sarcastic teacher and helps you out if you have any questions but his quizzes and tests are hard. So study study! I'm currently taking him, and this winter and I just want to drop because the test and quizzes are hard.
Prof. Alvarado is one of the favorite professors. I took his class for a winter semester, and honestly, even though it is a lot of work to cover, he really helps you through it. I would definitely recommend anybody take his class if you love math or even struggle with math. He's awesome! But..... prepare to drown in homework. Its pretty easy though
Doesn't help, and an awful sense of humor
He has the ability to make you love math and even question switching your major. He teaches in a way that it is fun and it ensures that you will learn the material. Need the book for homework, but he teaches better than the book ever could so you won't need to look over the concepts much. He truly wants his students to succeed and he is amazing!
He was an amazing professor, and very inspirational . He is passionate about math, and that is really important, but be aware, it is NOT an easy class. lots of homework, and some quizzes now and then.
I took his class to freshen up on lower math. He is very enthusiastic and will encourage you, as a class, to do your best. He also gives very clear notes and the homework is turned in all at once for each chapter. The syllabus is very organized and detailed. He is also very easy to get along with and will make sure everyone participates.
Professor Alvarado was pretty cool teacher at first. But once you get into the harder material he rushes through it, I got confused and even asking questions during class he would get annoyed or just ignore you. He would try to be funny all the time and it was just annoying, he needs to be more understanding and Helpul.
Really good teacher! Uses the whole entire class time, so never expect to get out early! Gives extra credit, but for only students that have perfect attendance. Overall great teacher, if you have a tough time with math he's the teacher for you!
BEST teacher for stats!!! Passed his class with an A, gives clear lectures, answers questions and if that is not enough he really encourages going to his office hours. Be prepared to study and your grade will show it.
Recommended. Never understood stats until I took his class. He tried to make lectures interesting by being humorous but it's a hit or miss. Exams are reflective of his notes, but you have to understand the concepts. Good amount of hw but only due on exam days. 3 quizzes, 3 exams, 1 final, 1 project. Replaced lowest exam grade with final if higher.
Good professor for the most part, really tries to help and doesn't leave you til you understand, the only part I disliked was the grading system, he has 3 tests worth 100 each while homework and quizzes are only worth 15-20, tests are really heavy!
Really hard Stats class. He's nice but a tough professor. Tries to be funny but isn't. I studied hard and still failed his class. I couldn't have studied any harder, I gave it my best. He does offer help if you need it, just go to his office hours. He favors girls over guys. Be prepared to study your butt off. It's a tough class. Lots of reading.
Prof Alvarado is a really good math teacher and explains the WHY behind the formulas rather than just telling you the formulas with no understanding of how they work. This is really helpful in the overall understanding of the material, esp with stats. He is nice, but be careful because the tests are HARD. Be SURE to review the material b4 tests!!
Professor Alvarado is a great teacher. As long as you're willing to put in the same amount of effort into learning as he does for teaching, you should be able to pass his class & understand the material. The way he lectures is very clear & organized, & he makes sure that everyone understands before he moves on. I loved this math class-that's a 1st!
Noel explains lessons pretty good but he gets annoying because he is way too sarcastic. His tests are hard and way different from his lessons. Him being soo sarcastic just ruined the whole semester and made it a class that I really disliked going to. Lots of hw!
Professor Alvarado is a very good teacher and a genuinely nice man .I was able to understand all the concepts for pre-cal with ease . He is very lively in his lectures :)
if math isn't your favorite subject and you are usually confused in class, TAKE HIM!!Hands down the best math teacher that I've ever had in my entire life. You can tell through his lectures that he genuinely cares that everyone GETS the concepts behind the formulas, and is SO THOROUGH and detailed in his lectures, if you pay attention you cant fail
Professor Alvarado is a solid teacher. He is clear on what he wants us to know for exams and quizzes. He gives a lot of homework, if you do it you're set for the exams. He gives you cheat sheets so you have to get an A in this class. He really cares about students, if you reach out to him he will definitely help you. gives inspirational speeches.
The Good: He is passionate about stats, and his lessons are straightforward. The Bad: His method of teaching with sarcasm and stale jokes isn't always a good thing. Initially funny, but gets old very fast. Occasionally, he'll discuss unrelated things and rush through the lesson afterwards. The Ugly: Homework practice doesn't help with tests.
As a person who struggles in math, he presents his lectures/notes SO clear & straightforward. He cares about his students and is open to questions for clearer understanding. His jokes can be dry and he can sound condescending. Quizzes, exams, finals aren't too hard unless you study & do hw. Cumulative final but shouldn't be hard unless you STUDY!
Great Prof. helped me get back on track with Math after 10 year gap. 3-4 exams + accumulative final. Study guides for ea. exam and his final study guide, WAY harder than the actual final. Funny guy & story teller. Makes sure everyone understands b4 moving forward. Doesnt review HW unless U ask. Extra Credit for 0 absents only. Do HW & u will pass!
Prof. Alvarado is passionate about math. He explains the material well. Unfortunately, I struggle in math. It was not HIS fault the subject was hard for me. He was always available to help and aswered questions. Such a nice professional guy.
He needs to be more understanding and Helpful. He gets annoyed at students too easily. He can be very pompous and disrespectful to students. Find another professor.
Overbearing amount of HW (doesn't help at all with exams). He's the kind of teacher who will teach basic problems, find shortcuts, and then give you a problem on the exam x5 as hard. Condescending tone. He said the final exam wascumulative but 70% consists of the last chs. -Student who can't transfer to a UC this Fall only because of this class!
He's a decent teacher in terms of teaching, you can tell his passion for math. Funny but takes time to lag in class. He'll ask if anyone has any questions and then poke fun at anyone that doesn't know it. This class was very difficult to me, the few students who did well are just exceptional students, but he'll take credit even if 3/4th fail. Warn!
He is really the best math teacher I ever had. He explained the materials so well. If you take his class, try not to be absent because all the material is really important. But dont worry if you study the papers he gave you well quizes and exams just is very similar to them. Also his study guides bc some of them will be exactly the same in the exam
nice guy but as a teacher his teaching is ruff
This professor is so awesome. He is relaxed, funny, and really helps you understand a difficult topic. He gives a lot of homework and tests, but if you do the homework and do your best to pay attention and keep up in class, you will do well. He wants you to do more than pass, he really wants you to learn.
Math is not easy, but he makes it interesting and you can tell he's passionate with his teaching. That passion does mean challenging problems show up on the exam, but he often goes over very similar problems in class, step by step. As with most math classes, quite a lot of hw and tests aren't easy, so make sure you study!
Math is hard. It takes constant work and its up to the student to make school a priority and do the work. Professor Alvarado is a fair guy. Hes clear about what you need to know. Hes passionate about Math- Would you expect anything less? Be a professional student. If your anything less, your input is invalid.
Do NOT WASTE YOUR TIME IN THIS ClASS! do not take him. He is a joke! He teaches way TOO FAST which is very poor of him especially to be teaching students STATS for the very first time ! He jokes way too much that is not funny at all! He just needs to teach better and slow down and he is not big on asking questions.
I wouldn't recommend any student to be in his class because he teaches in a fast pace, he is always going off topic, he doesn't like helping students. Due to the fact that many students had questions about math he would say not now later but would never answer back. I wouldn't not take his class if i were you!
If you want to be tested on the material covered in lecture, DO NOT take Alvarado. You will be told to study one concept and will be tested on something foreign from what was in lecture and the homework. Do yourselves a favor and avoid this professor unless you want to feel unnecessary frustration. He barely shows examples on how to do the work.
Never finished lectures on time, keeping us after class at least 15 mins every session. Spent half his lectures off topic. Kinda condescending. Anyway, more than half our class dropped because of his teaching style. Hardly available outside of class. Trys to be funny but comes off as awkward and rude. I would avoid him if you can.
I'll admit, when I first took his class, I was a little reluctant because his reviews all over the place. However, I took his precalc class over winter and he was great! His tests were almost identical to the lecture packets except with number changes. If you don't understand something, it's up to YOU to ask questions. Nice guy too, 100% recommend
The volume of his voice fluctuates a lot, but it's not something you can't get used to. He teaches well, but make sure you ask questions if you feel even a little iffy on something. He's really funny, and enjoyable, too.
If it's your first time taking Stats, I wouldn't recommend you take his class. He moves really fast and tries to catch up to the other teachers, and there are times when he tells you not to ask questions because he's gonna lecture only. I would not take his class again, he can be really rude sometimes.
This is a honest rating. Professor Alvarado is a really great professor. Yes he does go a bit fast, but he TEACHES. He is great at explaining, and welcomes students to come to his office hours if they're still lost. I took him my freshman year, and I don't regret it. He allows you to have a note card for formulas on exams. He's a great person/prof.
Hes hilarious and if you follow whats on the paper and study the study guide you will do great, homework usually doesnt matter with the test, mainly on papers!
He makes you work for your grade. He moves very fast. He starts at a normal pace; however, he gets sidetracked sometimes and rushes in the end. Exams are not that difficult because he lets us use a small notecard during the exams. As long as you pay attention and follow along all of the assignments, it is doable.
He does have fast lectures, but he gives you packets with examples that are structured the same as the exam. He really makes you work for the grade, and if you have questions or need help its on you to get it. Math is my worst subject but he made it stomachable and always reminds office hours/emailing him questions. Nice guy, wants you to pass!
He teaches way to fast. You basically teach yourself. I do not recommend.
I took him in winter intersession. The class was pretty hard, but that was to be expected with a class like Calc 2 being compressed to 6 weeks. He's very energetic, passionate and loves to go off on stories. He's also very thorough in his teaching and makes an effort to help falling behind students. He's not easy, but he teaches very well.
Genuinely an incredible teacher, inspires you to learn more about the subject and makes it fun. Be ready to study outside of class, as he only has 3 hours / week to teach, and he does skip over certain review sections that reteach concepts from Geometry and Algebra, so touch up on any sections he skips if something is unclear. Would take again )
He's very inspirational and willing to help. He prepares u for the next level. lectures are easy to understand but goes fast at the end. Note that he will test u something outside the lecture and HW cuz he's clear on what he wants from u. Want a easy A?wrong professor! U have to work for ur grade! He's definitely a good and responsible professor.
very arrogant with teaching online, and made the students feel incompetent when they didnt understand the topic. I was looking forward to the class as he seemed very energetic and happy but he wasnt a good teacher and most of the students had to learn everything off of YouTube. The hw wasnt very manageable and the study guides were misleading
Professor Alvarado decent teacher. This class is by no means easy and he really makes you work for your grade. I think he did his best when it came to teaching online, but he was a bit of disorganized with tests and comm. Tests used proctorio. 4 quizzes 20 pts each, 3 tests worth 100 pts each, a final worth 150 pts, and an excel project 50 pts
Professor Noel Alvarado is willing to spend extra time and effort to help students in need. He is a great teacher, however, I do not think will take his courses again due to his course being too test heavy. Homework accounts for 60/650 points. Which is only about 9%. Rest are Tests and Quizzes. I have A's on all test, yet still got B overall.
Choose another professor. Not enough time on exams. Tough grader. Be prepared for a ton of homework.
Hes the worst professor Ive ever encounter in my academic experience. I agree with the comment below that he gave 5 questions on Quiz, Only 5min for each questions! considering students already wasted their time on Proctorio Check, scan ID and Desk already took 1-2minutes. I saw on Canvas that 15 people or half of the class dropped. NOT RECOMRND!
AWFUL professor. IDK why there were positive comments, probably he rate himself! He is super unorganized professor I have ever seen in my life. No study guide. Give only 20-30 minutes Quiz for 5 questions (Other class has only 1-2 questions) Exam has 18 questions! I don't recommend this professor for any class he teaches... DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!!
PRO Lenient with pushing back due dates. Explains any problem with detail if you ask him. CON Lectures are rushed. Some study guides did not apply to the tests. When students pointed this out, he punished the whole class by not providing study guides. Took attendance after class, sometimes when it was past time to leave. Often went over time.
His class is not for people who dont have any experience in a statistics course. He was always in a hurry to move on to the next topic for his lecture. Also, He quizzes you on something that you learned within that day. He does not give you enough time to prepare for the quiz.
His lectures are way too fast, and it seems he wants to finish the whole book with many chapters in few classes. He is always in a rush, and he only gives few examples of the topic. Bunch of homework, and some are not related to what he taught us. He is rude to his students and pretends to be nice. His lectures and examples are hard to understand.
Professor Alvarado is the worst math professor. He speeds through lectures and chapters and then expects you to know everything on the quizzes! He refuses to give tests outside of class days and gives very little time for them before we start class. He gives easy examples during lectures and gives harder problems on tests! Don't take his class!
Do not take this class if you have a steady job or other issues. This professor is by far the worst ive seen so far. He knows his material and shows it perfectly but i have yet too find a reason why it is necessary too speed every section. Get ready for lots of homework that you'll be scanning pages left and right as the HW wont be on mymath lab!!
He lectures too fast and expects you to understand. Lots of quizzes and exams. Final exam is on the entire course.
He is by far the worst math professor at Mt. SAC. He speeds through all of the lectures and is so condescending towards students when asking a question. He throws fits when students do not interact. He gives exams right before class and expects you to finish by the time class starts. He jumps back and forth from chapters. This class is not worth it
Professor Noel is arguably the worst math teacher I have ever taken, when you first meet him he seems very nice and genuine, but as the semester goes on he is rude to the classes when it comes to asking him almost anything, as a teacher you should go out of your way to help your students learn the curriculum. He definitely chose the wrong career
Professor Alvarado is not a good basic math professor. I thought this class was supposed to be a basics class it is very hard and he doesnt know how to make it any easier. He is very condescending to his students and gets almost mad when you ask a question and he doesnt understand it. Then gets mad when you dont ask questions. Dont recommend.
He always goes by the book but then goes off topic. Very confusing, My issue was that he claimed to unlock discussions but waited until past the discussion due date to unlock it, so when you miss discussions you lose points. I'd brought it to his attention on a Tuesday and kept asking until the day before it was due it was unlocked for me.
He is very condescending and has as an arrogant demeanor. Doesn't really try to help you in class. Boring lectures that never make sense.
I recently dropped his class for the summer. He is condenseding. He says he wants class participation, but then gets mad when students ask questions. He's not patient, kind, and he expects you to get the material right away. Don't take during summer/ winter session unless this is all you will focus on. Quizzes and test difficult. No way!!!!
Great lecturer, just go to office hours and he'll be more than willing to help! This class is easy if you watch lectures.
Do yourself a favor and get another professor or class. We started with 36 students and concluded with 10 students. I should have withrawled when I was able to. His lectures are hour-long lectures of him just solving problems. Very slow and boring. There are videos of him with mistakes so it will throw you off. Slow grader and unorganized.
One of the worst professor, Tough and slow grader. Lots of HW, discussions. Gets mad when students asks questions. Lectures are just him solving problems by himself not helpful at all. He sent to my personal email about not showing hands and calculator in a very arrogance way. Definitely not recommended and stay away from this class please.
easily one of the worst professors I have ever had. very egotistical/demotivating attitude. gets mad when there's no participation but proceeds to get annoyed when someone asks a question. treats students like they're some type of robot. doesn't give enough time on quizzes/exams. would recommend to stay far away from his class.
His style of teaching is very unorthodox. Forces us to use a 3rd party extension called Honorlock and do a 360 of our room when taking tests. I once couldn't submit a quiz in time (10 seconds) due to internet issues, and he gave me a 0. We started with 36 and ended with 8. Your best bet is to make a group chat with other classmates if you take him.
The worst professor I've taken. His lectures weren't helpful to understand the lessons. He makes you to download an extension called Honorlock that tracks your every move in your room when taking quizzes and exams, you could look down for a couple of seconds and you're flagged for cheating. Don't recommend taking this professor.
Videos are 1:30 long for one lesson when it is easier to learn from the textbook. The prof is also blind, as he will deduct points off your tests if you don't box your answers. Also, if you solve a problem without his method (as taught in lectures), he will deduct points. He is also very condescending and passive aggressive in his emails. 0/10.
Noel is a very paranoid professor. He seemed friendly in the beginning. His demeanor changed throughout the semester. In total, he accused around 10+ people for cheating with no evidence. He also requires you to install an Honorlock extension, which violates our privacy. Half the class failed. Hopefully, HR will investigate him in the near future.
Like many have said, this professor seemed to be fair and reasonable in the beginning of class. As time went on however, he began to implement stricter rules for assessments just because students have similar approaches to solving problems and accuses them of cheating as he sees fit. This creates a stressful environment in class and low pass rate.
He is truly the toughest of the toughest professors. He assigns a ridiculous amount of homework (10 sects; each sect has 20+ problems), which is worth only 20 points. As many have said earlier, Alvarado is an unpredictable grader. There are no study guides, and he nitpicks our exams and sometimes accuses individuals of cheating due to correlation.
Professor Alvarado is easily one of the worst professors. He issues an unreasonable amount of homework. The exams and final are no better, as he is unpredictable and deducts points randomly even if you correctly answered the problem. He also attempts to accuse anyone of cheating when granted the opportunity. Take him if you want a challenge.
I had to work so hard to get an A. I had to commit 20+ hrs a week to understand the material fully. The HW is manageable if you complete 2-3 sects a day. Additionally, you had to solve the final and exam questions similarly as shown in lecture videos, or he would deduct some pts. There are better professors than Alvarado. Take him as a last resort.
Alvarado issues excessive homework, and his grading is unpredictable and inconsistent, as he doesn't use a rubric. As other reviews have stated, he attempts to find reasons to deduct points, even if you have the right solutions. Reasons include unclear steps/work, not using limit definitions, the professor failing to realize the methodology, etc.
He is decent in-person, but nightmarish online. Also, he doesn't curve on tests. I don't recommend taking him during winter/summer intersessions, as you must watch 8-12 videos (~1 hr) every week (tip:watch in 2x). The quizzes, exams, and final aren't challenging if you fully understand the HW. Take him if you want a challenge and exceed in math. GL
He is the worst professor I have experienced. He accused me of cheating on exam #1 due to my uncontrollable head movement. He issued a zero, even though I have retrocollis. I attempted to explain this to Professor Alvarado but to no avail. Luckily, I dropped before the deadline. He is my role model, and hopefully, one day I will be like him.
This guy is so slow and unpredictable. He talks in 0.5x speed in lecture speed, so you have to watch in 2x speed to keep up with the pace of the lecture. He also takes a long time to grade. Who knows if he is going to finish grading in one day or one week. The only upside is you do get a lot of knowledge.
Expect extremely long assignments and lecture videos well over 1 hour. During tests, Mr. Alvarado's paranoia towards cheating was very difficult to work with. Multiple students were repeatedly accused of cheating with 0 evidence backing this claim. As result, some students even failed. We ended the class with 8 out of the original 30 students.
As a Special Admit student, I found the class challenging but manageable with 10+ hours of weekly study. The professor is a tough grader and deducts points for unclear work.
Alvarado is a very passive aggressive professor with very strict grading often taking points for reasons you do not understand. He often accuses you of cheating even when using honorlock and doing a 360 scan of your room. very heavy on assigning hw that takes up a significant amount of time that should be devoted to watching the 8-10 videos a week.
The homework is overwhelming with 10 sections of 30+ problems each. Less than 20 problems mean they're extremely difficult. Expect to spend 20+ hours a week just to understand the material. As many have mentioned, the grading is unpredictable and harsh. If you value your sanity, avoid this class.
No one in my class received a grade higher than an A. Half the class dropped and 1/3 of the remaining failed. The highest grade was a B. That should speak volumes of the sheer difficulty of this class. I do not recommend Professor Alvarado, but if you take him, best of luck!
The tests are stressful with Honorlock requirements, short time limits, and strict grading. Privacy concerns and the need to use pencil and paper make it even worse. Expect to spend more time proving you're not cheating than actually learning.
Homework is excessive with each section containing 30+ problems. Quizzes and exams are timed harshly and monitored invasively. Grading is unpredictable and unfair. Alvarado's demeanor shifts from friendly to aggressive, especially if cheating is suspected.
The workload is insane with at least 20 hours a week needed. Grading is erratic and penalizes for minor issues. The test-taking process is intrusive and stressful with Honorlock and manual submissions. This class is not worth the mental strain.
Listen to the one-star reviews!!! This class is a nightmare. The amount of homework is ridiculous, and the tests are unfairly timed and monitored invasively. The grading system is unpredictable and harsh, and Alvarado's demeanor can become hostile. Avoid this course if you value your GPA.
The workload is unbearable, and the grading is unpredictable. Tests are invasive with Honorlock and strict time limits. Alvarado's attitude shifts from friendly to aggressive. The class demands too much time and effort for unfair grading.
Alvarado's class is flexible and informative. The asynchronous format allows for a manageable schedule, and the responsive communication helps a lot. The quizzes, exams, and finals align well with homework, making it easier to succeed. Alvarado is very responsive and helpful. Highly recommend for those who want a flexible learning experience.
4.0 student here. The positive review under me is somewhat inaccurate, Alvarado is not caring, as he is a strict grader and will find insignificant reasons to accuse you of cheating. He will confront you aggressively and condescendingly through his emails. The material on tests is indeed similar to HW problems, but the strict time limit negates it.
I should have listened to the previous reviews! Alvarado sounds condescending at times and can be frustrating to follow/deal with. He explains concepts thoroughly and clearly but at a slow pace. This week peeked 100+ degrees, and he didn't release us early :( Other classes got dismissed. I will update this review once the semester ends.
Save yourself and do not take Professor Alvarado's class! His odor is strong, and his hairline hasn't grown back yet. He becomes agitated when no one responds to his questions; he should diagnose his anger issues. I withdrew from his course and registered for a late start course. Best decision ever. A withdrawal is better than a failing grade.
One of the best professors I ever had. His lectures will never bore you, and he explains concepts in a way you never thought of. His class's average is a 75%, but this is due to the student's lack of study. The exam is very reflective of the homework. Calculus is expected to be rigorous. If you put in the work, expect to be rewarded. Don't be lazy.
Alvarado's class is demanding, with excessive homework and invasive test-taking. The grading is unpredictable and the professor's attitude can turn aggressive. However, Unstuck ai's study tools helped me manage the workload and succeed.
bro fr carried. ez class
His shiny, bald head keeps looking at me. IDK WHY. Also, show ALL your work. Otherwise, professor Noel Alvarado will be flabbergasted and lose common sense, resulting in (-5 pts). You will die of frustration and aggravation. His lectures are also so boring, putting me to Zzz. In calculus, the limit is crucial for understanding how functions behave!
This is a Statistics MATH110 class. The way Professor Alvarado teaches would make anyone doze off from boredom and drop his class. Sort of pervy towards girls in class. It is recommended to take this class online instead.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Trust me go with anyone but him. He is REALLY strict, his online method of test taking, recording your screen, listening to your mic, watching through the camera is ridiculous i understand the point of the camera or screen recording but why you have to listen in and watch me at the same time.
Not actually as bad as I thought. Does have a slightly tough syllabus, but can make exceptions. Made some mistakes during class, but will admit them. If you have to take him, be prepared for some difficulty, a good amount of homework, and exams that take up 63% of your entire grade. (There were 9 students at the end of the class out of 34 students)
Do NOT take him. Go with any other professor but him. He is disrespectful. Does Not help you at all. Has no consideration towards anyone. He gives assignments as if your life revolves around only his class. save yourself the frustration.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR AT ALL COSTS. HE ACCUSED ME OF CHEATING EVEN THOUGH I WASNT AND HE FAILED ME. He is very aggressive in his messages and will call you out for the slightest thing. I would have him fired tbh.
Oh my god I was doing so good on all the work and then exam 1 came and he ACCUSED ME of cheating. He gave me a 0 on it and his only aliby was because OF MY EYES. Btw I was supposed to do my work ON PAPER MEANING I HAD TO LOOK DOWN TO WRITE. That what the only thing he said so I'm not sure what to do with this now
Horrible had to drop his class, one of the worst teachers ever. Doesn't care at all and his quiz time is short but wants a lot of work for it. Doesn't even allow you to send the work after the time runs out. NEVER GET THIS TEACHER
He answers questions well, teaches thoroughly, and is interesting. He is too harsh of a grader in my opinion. If math is your life, sure take his class. I barely passed with a good effort because your grade is mostly based on tests. I would recommend taking a different professor because he is not here to do you any favors on test day.
professor alvarado is a tough grader, you must be super thorough during quizzes and tests (many students dislike him for this) if you want to go into mathematics or physics, he's very good at making you think like a mathematician. he wants to see you succeed and is communicative. also his lectures are entertaining and he values participation
