He was so boring and his tests were so hard! If someone plans on taking this class, get ready for lots of reading and daily quizzes.
Kind of whacky but very interested in his students. Not bad
A very intersting man, with knowledge that goes far beyond text books. I strongly reccomend Dr. Barker, especially his knowledge of the City of Chicago.

AWESOME PROF!!! I search for classes the he teaches. I have had 3 classes with him already. He gives a quiz every day in class, but you only have to answer one question out of 8. His midterms and finals are easy!
SUPER resource for first-year students. I learned about different facets of a Chicago lifestyle in business/crime/politics. Through his engaging lectures, daily quizzes (not fun but helpful) I found myself interacting more than ever!
seems to know a lot about kids and how they kive their kives today. He's funny and doesnt bore you while you are in class. The quizes are really easy as long as you read.
AWESOME teacher. He made the class so much more interesting, and he tended to make strange faces and act things out, it made everything much funnier.
Easily the worst professor I've had at DePaul. Incredibly boring, class discussions have nothing to do with the textbook. Takes forever to get tests/papers back. THREE ENTIRE WEEKS after Final until our grades got posted! Only likes suck-ups.
He is so smart and so knowledgable. Has good intentions, is a very interesting man, someone you would like as a friend more than a teacher. You do learn a lot and very impressionable. Should experince his teaching style.
Dr. Barker is the coolest, most laid back professor. He knows his stuff and is a character in class!
The man is a genius! So nice and really easy to talk to. Lectures get very boring, but he's pretty funny! Great guy! Quizzes everyday, real easy to get an A without reading the material for them. I would take him again in a heart beat!
very laid back.gives daily quizzes, but you only answer one little question on it.a little boring in lectures.just try and take notes and pay attention.you do HAVE to read to take the mid-term and final or there's no way you can do it.
Some of his canned lectures are boring, but for the most part his classes are very enjoyable. Reading is mandatory since he gives a quiz on it each class, which can be a pain. The exams are hard to study for since he doesn't explain what to focus on.
Noel is a nice and funny guy but his theories class is suicide. The material is the worst. It's a maditory class for soc. majors so be prepared, it's a killer-not in a hard way but in a very boring way. His tests are pretty hard but zero papers.
I've had him for 2 classes a very easy teacher, just do the readings and be prepared. Everything is multiple choice. Nice guy, funny, lectures can be boring but he tries hard and trys to get the class involved. Recomend him
I liked this class. He gives easy quizzes and has lectures that relate reading topics to everyday life and culture. Most easily the funniest older prof. I have ever had. He has a superb sense of humor and knows a lot more about popular society than most would think. Take this class.
Boring, lots of reading, and unclear on midterm exam. Daily quizes are easy depending if you read or not.
Gives quizzes everyday on reading (one question). Midterm and Final are tough if you don't read. His lectures are very boring and half the time he goes off subject talking about stuff that's unrelated. He tries to be funny but fails. The one good thing about the class is he has an awesome curve.
ok i gotta agree on a couple of things. 1.the midterm is impossible. 2.he does get off subject all the time. 3. the final is easier than the midterm but still really difficult...1 question quizzes are funny though...u get to choose which question u want to answer out of like 8 choices
He is a funny man! he makes the class fun with this witty stories. he's really cool and very understanding. take his class!
obviously (see course listings) i really like barker. He IS funny, and a little eccentric, but most U of C grads are (really, pay attention to it) He incorporates readings, videos, handouts. His tests are multiple choice (and you want easier?) He is great, take Policy and Urban Community !!
awesome teacher
Barker is a great professor and his class is interesting at most times. However, he speaks in a boring monotone voice that makes you want to fall asleep sometimes unless you really pay attention to what he is saying.
Barker was an alright professor. his lectures were pretty boring except for a few. you should definately go to class bc there is a quiz everyday, but they were easy. midterm and final were kinda hard and basically the only grades in the class. i got a B+ but i really studied for the final - the midterm was harder
Funny guy. Really helpful if you talk to him after classes. Only need one question right on attendance quizzes. Midterm hard, but final not so hard. Great teacher. Very knowledgeable.
I had him for four classes a few years back. What you need to do is sit in the front row and prepare to laugh. His 'bits' are priceless! Most of the class won't get his humor, but he's f-n funny.
Great professor. Interesting, funny. Intriguing class.
Monotonous soft voice, very difficult to hear. Likes to wear a purple collared t-shirt. Gives detail orientated and difficult daily quizzes especially the mid-term even if you do all the reading. Grades on a curve. Consists of A LOT of reading. More like a history class. Does not like dogs nor cats. Used to be a hippie.
This class description is false advertising. It's just the history of Chicago. It requires a lot of time for a Explore class. Read and take notes and be prepared to take a descriptive quiz every class. Nice enough guy though. Really likes to hear himself talk and play tour guide.
awesome teacher!!!very helpful and make his class very interesting. everyone should take his class;i had him for 3 classes.
Great prof. Very funny and interesting. Worth going to class. A little slow on getting papers/tests back (up to weeks after you took the tests) and you never get quizzes back. Also, exams are on unimportant details, making it hard to know what to study. Would recommend him, but just make sure you have patience.
Agree with all. He is old, but truly knows the minds and attitudes of college peeps. Recomended. This class was half interesting, half forgettable and half boring. His stories and experience are worth it all.
He's a little out there, but he knows a lot about the subject. His lectures can drone on, but there is a lot of interesting information to learn. Be prepared for daily quizzes on the reading (that way you have to do it) and his final was a beast, but he grades mainly on participation.
Great class. If you're not interested in the content of it, that's okay. At least yout get to look at his hot body for an hour.
Watch a lot of videos
Daily quizzes that you NEVER get back so you never know how you are doing in the class. Very quiet man, can barley hear him. No attendance policy, but if you miss you miss the quiz. Midterm and final-gives u the essay question. I would not suggest Noel Barker...
Pretty good teacher. Interesting guy knows alot about chicago, so if you coming into depaul and he still has a discover class you should take him.
The lectures are often seemingly unrelated to reading material, which there is a lot of. Will talk until the end of class if not past it. Otherwise, a very knowledgable teacher and you watch a lot of interesting and fun movies.
Ok he's a cool guy but he doesnt help very much with testing and made it seem like I had an A- and gave me a B.. a little pissed
Monotone! but if you read the class is easy. Make sure you participate because that gives you an edge if he knows you. Daily quizzes are not that bad. If you have a demanding schedule and would have problems reading everything then you might want to reconsider because you do have to read a lot. Cool guy though
He's a smart guy, sometimes funny. You have to read for every class, so that sucks. Pretty easy class tho.
Amazing professor. He is very knowledgeable and has very interesting lectures and films. Not a hard grader at all, but gives a quiz on the readings every day. Reading helped me not have to study much for the tests.
awesome teacher!!! very helpful and understanding. true, he gives a quiz everyday, but they're very easy. Best Soc teacher at depaul.
This guy is totally awesome!! He makes you read a lot and gives a lot of quizes, but he is sooo cool. I would recommend him to anyone
He seemed austere at first but he's so not. Really interesting if you want to learn. Can be funny too and knows his s***. Short daily quizzes on readings but it'll help you prepare for the super easy mid-term and final.
Noel is great and the class was easy. There's a small amount of reading a quiz on it every class, which is his way of taking the test. The class was like a book club and we watched a lot of movies.
the best professor at depaul. hes awesome!!! i took every class he taught.
The classes are incredibly boring and the teacher is very very dull, but he's pretty generous with grades.
Will make a few jokes and is very understanding when in comes to turning in late assignments and the midterm and final exams are pretty easy.
A very nice guy, but class was a waste of time. I hated reading the material, only to go to class to hear him tell me what I just read. Thanks, but no thanks. I'm here to work and read,; the teacher should be here to challenge me and make me think about what I read, not waste my time. Very lenient with grades. Easy class.
All he does is talk about random stuff that makes no sense. His classes are usually easy just do the reading and you should be fine. He also does the same thing for every class he teaches so if you have a friend in the same class but a different time chances are he did the exact same thing.
He is really nice, but I do not like his lectures. He goes off topic WAY TOO MUCH! The class was about Police and the Urban Community, and then he makes us watch Romeo and Juliet. He knows his stuff, class is easy, but expect lectures to be boring, useless and pointless. Oh, and attendance is very important, so show up!
A real nice guy who tries to make his interesting and funny. However, I think he is way too focused on the lecture aspect of his classes. Even though I actually enjoyed the readings, we had one for every class and daily quizzes based on them. I enjoyed what I learned but all the reading and and quizzes really tires you out. Easy midterm and final!
Seemed out of it alot of the time, quiz every class and a 5 page paper for the final. Overall not too bad.
Prof. Barker is insanely intelligent and has so much to share. The class is definately a lot of work, but I got so much out of it!
GO TO EVERY CLASS, ATTENDENCE AND PARTICIPATION ARE KEY. I CANNOT STRESS THAT ENOUGH. THOUGH CLASSES ARE BORING AND LECTURE UNRELATED TO BOOK READING, IT IS IMPERATIVE TO PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT HE SAYS, BECAUSE HE CITES SPECIFIC EXAMPLES FROM HIS LECTURES IN THE MIDTERM AND FINAL. READING EVERY NIGHT, QUIZ EVERY DAY. KINDA HARD. GO TO CLASS!!!
I was really looking forward to taking this class, as mental illness is a huge interest of mine. While he's a cool guy and makes awesome pop culture references, he's a pretty bad teacher, if you ask me. VERY unclear on what he wants for the midterm and final (except for the essay question), quiz every day
Barker is my favorite Soc professor. He is crystal clear on what he expects and follows the syllabus exactly. The classes are 100% lecture, but it's all relative to class and it's very intersting. He makes great examples that can relate to everybody. Quiz every day, but you only need to answer one question-out of eight. Stop whining, great teacher.
Do not take this class! I am a straight A student who got a C+ in this class! The books were interesting, but lecture was extremely mind numbing. He picks random facts from the three books and that is the midterm/final. No study guide, no pre-test prep, just random facts, like "What color were Gina's socks when she went to sleep?". Don't do it!
He is a very easy teacher. Just do the readings required because he gives a quiz everyday. His tests are based off of lectures and readings. Easy grader for papers as well. I got an A- on it.
Noel Barker was a pretty good teacher. Sometimes, lectures could be boring. MAKE SURE THAT YOU READ THE CHAPTER BECAUSE YOU WILL HAVE A QUIZ EVERYDAY. CLASS ATTENDANCE IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE SOMETIMES ON MIDTERM/FINALS HE WOULD ASK ABOUT A LECTURE. ONE FIVE PAGE PAPER (EASY). HE ALSO, GIVES YOU A WRITTEN ESSAY PART BUT GIVES YOU THE QUESTIONS ONE WEE
Noel was a great teacher who knows a lot about the subject. I took him for Jr. year experiential learning about the criminal justice system. I read some of the most amazing books, quizes every class on reading if you do them you'll be fine
Awesome guy with a lot knowledge and the proper skills to teach effectively. He is funny and very open minded. Do yourself a favor and take this class!
Interesting guy. Even though he's old, he can connect to students our age. Funny anecdotes from his life keep the class interesting. EASY quiz everyday. You only need to get a few right to get an A on them, so guessing totally works.
Mr. Barker is great. Sometimes is hard to pay attention to, he rambles a little. He's a great teacher, he assigns great and intriguing reading. I learned a lot and it was an easy class. 1 question quizzes daily but midterm, final and serice hours were easy. Great class-DEFINITELY take it!
Professor Barker is great. His lectures can be a bit boring, but most of the time he keeps students engaged with funny/interesting stories and facts. He knows his stuff. Daily quizzes on assigned reading, but they're multiple choice..pretty easy. As long as you pay attention to lectures and read, you'll do well.
Absolutely the worst professor I have had at DePaul. No basis in sociological theory - we watch videos all the time. 15 quizzes and a mid-term so far and we have received nothing back - almost the end of the quarter. Boring, uninteresting, a waster of time as well as frustrating for someone who takes school seriously. Don't waste your tuition!
He was a fantastic teacher, very passionate about his subject and seemed to have a wealth of experience to draw from in lectures. While at first the class drags it is certainly made up for when he gets into the topics he's interested in. A must have for any sociology majors.
Teerrrrrriblllllee!!!!! he is the worst. my whole class scored terribly on every quiz we took. yes, he curves them, but if u want better than a C in the class GOODLUCK. dont do it he is boring too!!
He is a great professor! Easy A! Okay sometimes he can be a little bit boring, but if you participate in class it won't be. The books he picks are good reads. 25hrs of service learning is easy! If you have the option of picking Central States SER, pick the 76th and Kostner location. One question quizzes (super easy!)is his way of taking attendance.
Gives quizzes every day which are ridiculous. Lectures are sometimes funny, but offensive. Easy paper. Midterm and final are short answer and mult choice that are super hard. Didn't learn anything and you read 70pgs to remember one statistic. stupid
Terrible teacher. He just stands up there and talks to himself, wincing as tho he has heartburn. Dont sit in the back or you wont be able to hear him. His daily quizzes ask very specific questions from the readings. However, he does have a curve so as long as you get half the questions right, you should have at least a C.
He is a great teacher! He is funny and interesting. Daily quizzes for attendance and to ensure you read the assigned material. Easy paper. One of the best at DePaul.
Greatest teacher at DePaul. He's awesome makes content really interesting teaches great classes
Noel is the best professor at DePaul. Make sure you read because there are daily quizzes about the readings BUT the readings are super interesting! You also have to write a 3pg paper (piece of cake)DO NOT stress out about the midterm and final, he curves them, trust me! Plus he's super knowlegable. A bit boring sometimes but funny guy. take him!
I took Police and Urban City with Professor Barker. He was a boring teacher. His voice is very monotone but he is an easy grader. He curves the test a lot. We watched a lot of videos in class. There is a 1 question quiz everyday from the readings...easy.
Lectures can be boring, but he's a funny guy who tries to keep it interesting. "Quizzes" everyday but you can use the book when hes not paying attention. Curved the midterm and the 1 paper in the class was easy, I would definitely recommend him
Very interesting class. Prof Barker is really boring but makes an effort in making class fun.You have to read because there are quizzes everyday. You could use your book because he is usually not paying attention.
At first I thought that this class was going to be boring, which I have to admit that it is at times, but his lectures are pretty interesting when you get the hang of it. You have to take daily quizzes, but they are not that hard. I would take him if you wanted to get interested in to sociology.
This was my first class at DePaul and it was the worst thing I have every experienced. Noel Barker has no structure to his lecturing, no notes, no study guide. Daily quizzes, and you don't find out your grade until the day before the final. Worst class in the entire world!
This was literally the worst class I have ever taken. He gave no direction at all and no one in class ever paid attention because his lectures sucked. I retained no information that I needed for the tests from him. He lectures about things that had nothing to do with sociology. This class ruined my GPA. It was horrible! STAY AWAY!
Awww lol this professor is great! Hes very funny ( not humor) but how he teaches! Easy A paper wit no bibliography, easy daily quizzes& final that just for fyi: you mustt readd everything! He'll still curve it tho! Lol
Barker is easily one of the easiest professors. ITS CALLED READING PEOPLE! If you do it, I guarantee you will get an A. Do the reading and pay attention. quit whining, and welcome to college.
This has been my favorite professor by far at depaul. I've taken several of his classes and it's the only class I've ever really enjoyed going to. He knows what he is talking about, shows interest, we have cool field trips like visiting prisons and jails, and he can be really funny. Love this professor!
He is funny, and very interested in teaching, his methods are very different but he is very easy to fallow and understand.
Professor Barker is nice. He responds to e-mails quickly. I did not enjoy hunting him down for my grades, because he never gives them back. Come to class. Do the readings. There are daily quizzes. Put some effort in and you should be fine.
Had professor barker as a Freshman for Explore Chicago (Crime/Business/Politics in Chicago). BARKER WAS THE BEST!!! Class is nothing but field trips! You go to many cool places! Weekly reading assigned, but it's short and simple! Quiz each week. Midterm/final are doable. Final paper as well....super easy; you just write about memories. TAKE HIM!!!
I took him twice for two separate classes. i found the class easy. You have daily quizzes which is basically your attendance. Your midterm and final come exactly from your reading material. Just read, show up, and you will get an A
I took three classes with Prof. Barker- and he is the favorite professor I've had even through my PhD coursework. It's college- you should be expected to work hard, and he expects college level work. He is a bit odd, but brilliant and also wonderful outside of class. Any issues, just email- he is a reasonable person. He is fantastic.
For each class he gives a test based on the readings. Midterm and final had about 80 multiple choice questions which was a bit difficult because its hard to remember 6-7 chapters without a guideline or something to focus on. And so he curves both tests. He shows a lot of videos. And he is a big talker, he can talk your ear off to like death.
If you are looking to learn anything about sociology, this class is not for you. To be frank, Prof. Barker is a terrible teacher. Every single class period is wasted discussing trivial, irrelevant topics. However, if you are looking for an easy A, just do the reading and you should be fine. This class was an immense disappointment.
This class was a waste of time. Quizzes every class and he asks the most insignificant details about the reading. No feedback on assignments. Ridiculous multiple choice midterm & final. He gets on huge tangents and all examples, videos, and readings are DECADES out of date. None of his materials were relevant, helpful, or current. Do not take him.
Worst teacher of all time. The exact opposite of helpful and definitely not just a waste of a time but a waste of money on the books. Horrible teacher, and just a weird guy who doesn't have a damn relevant thing to say. Not that I'm only angry about the time wasted but the ridiculous quizzes with irrelevant topics
Prof. Barker is my favorite professor at Depaul hands down! He is great at what he does, very smart but kind of dry. I love the readings you do for this course. He tells great stories that relate to what we are learning, it's like having your grandpa tell you entertaining stories from the past! Take this class if you want to be amazing.
Quiz every class, but this is the only thing in class that will feel slightly relevant to material. Practically no feedback on work. Very unclear about what to expect. "Test on everything we have learned so far" is not helping anyone. Neither are his dry ramblings that never seem to have a point to take away. Rely heavily on readings to learn.
His lectures are unusual but very interesting and I find him pretty engaging. He's also very strict though, quiz every week. There's not a lot of assignments, but if you don't do the reading every week you will fail the class. I did the reading, didn't study for the final and still aced the test so basically if you read you'll be fine.
He is so unclear when lecturing about the topic for the day. I didn't pay attention throughout class because when he would lecture it was always off topic and made no sense. When it came to taking the tests I got a B+ and an A and I never paid attention to the lectures just read little bits of the books.
Very unclear. Talks super quiet, and expects you to come closer instead of him talking louder. Most of the Explore Chicago class was spent roaming around random parts of Chicago that had NOTHING to do with our readings purpose of the class. He's also super disorganized.
This teacher has been offensive from the first day of class. He has made off-the-cuff comments in class to the point where I and a friend of mine had to walk out. His readings are equally offensive. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. I have never been more offended by a class.
The texts are very detailed and if you don't remember particular quotes for the multiple choice midterm, you will not do well. Lectures are insanely boring and off track. He has awesome handwriting on the board- that's the best thing I can say about this fellow. Avoid at all costs.
These lectures, what can I say, one minute we are talking about the book, the next, I have no idea. The class itself is not something I would recommend. He is a nice fellow for sure, but is so dull, I am put to sleep every time. If you must take this class, it is not horrid, but if avoidable, you will have more fun elsewhere.
This man is full of character, his topics are pretty serious so it can seem boring at first because he lectures a lot, I've taken 2 of his classes and he's pretty straight forward. Read!! he quizzes every class on the readings assigned. write down the questions from the quizzes and you'll do good on the midterm and final
Professor Barker is nice. His voice and lectures tend to feel long because he talks in such a monotone soft voice. He gives quizzes before every class. If you read the material it's not hard. His multiple choice midterm and Final are ridiculously hard but he grades on a curve and if you do well on the essay portion you'll pass the exam and class.
Professor Barker has super interesting lectures that are fun to listen to if you pay attention and participate, although many of my classmates I noticed got bored. For my class, there were multiple chapters assigned to be read each week. But the quizzes were impossible because there was so much information and 7 incredibly specific questions.
Professor Barker is the best professor at DePaul University. He is very understanding, nice, and genuinely cares for his students. Although his lectures could be long, if you're interested in criminology then they won't be so bad. Also, the readings are interesting and he knows what he's talking about. Their's a quiz every week, which are easy!
Noel Barker is a fabulous professor and so bright. His tests are difficult and are reflections of how critically you did the reading (they are almost always curved). Daily quizzes are a piece of cake if you doing any of the reading. He is more approachable than he may seem. If you need help, talk to him! He is very flexible and cares!!!
Midterm and final exam where difficult pop quizzes every class to and alot of reading. Overall this was though one of my favorite professors at DePaul University as he follows up with students who are having difficulty and contacted me to make sure everything was ok during this quarter of hell. I would have to say he is the most easiest to reach.
Take his class! I have taken now two of his classes. These past comments that say his is "too hard" are honestly ridiculous. You have readings every week ( never have I in 20 weeks had a boring reading...). The readings are easy and the quizzes everyday a joke if you actually read. He curves both the midterm, final and paper. Read and get an A!
I took his mental illness course which was fantastic, so I decided to take him again, and what a big mistake that was. Now he is just boring, he lectures the entire time in class and it is very boring. He requires a ton of reading even some stories you cant find online, and he will give a quiz before every class on the readings
I took him twice, and I thought he was great. His lectures turn more into class conversations, but who doesn't enjoy that? He is SO caring. I was going through a lot of family issues last quarter, and he went above and beyond to help me. He gave me his personal # and checked in on me to make sure I was doing ok. No other prof has a heart like him.
Gives tests every class, the tests are on absolutely redundant details And stuff he never even taught for example one question might be how far is this street from that street (geography) while the class is about crime politics and business. Havent learned anything about crime, politics or business. Take him if you want to fail or Get stressed out
He's nice but his teaching style truly is not for me. I should have looked at his ratings before I signed up for the class. There are so many pop quizzes on the readings however questions will be on the most specific detail in the chapter that you probably looked over because it had nothing to do with the main terms. Heavy lecture.
Probably one of the worst professors I've had at DePaul. He is very old fashioned. No way of knowing your grade, no powerpoints. Just straight talking and chalk board which was the most boring thing ever. He never explains anything and the mid term and final are a joke. Do yourself a favor and save yourself the confusion. Don't take him..
There's no d2l page, so the only info you get is the two page syllabus on the 1st day. This is also the only class without a quiz at the beginning; better remember inane details from the books (1 of which is from the 80's) because that's all the quizzes are. He talks at you for the whole 1.5 hours, and doesn't give any info not already in the book.
The class is 90% just reading 2 chapters at a time from each reading; each class begins with a "quiz" on the reading. the quiz is answering one question from each chapter, each student picks 1 question he or she wants to answer from a list of usually 6 questions . the midterm is based off of the readings and moments in lecture so go to lecture
Amazing Professor. If you ever talk to Professor Barker outside of class, he is the most thoughtful and accommodating Profs I have had out of my 5 years at DePaul. He TRULY wants you to succeed. I really enjoyed his teaching style. Don't be afraid to ask questions, he has so many interesting stories relevant to his topics.
Professor Barker is really interesting if you are into a more lecture heavy class. Also an all around good person. Missed an assignment and he understood and gave me another chance without a silly penalty.
Prof. Barker is an amazing educator. He genuinely cares about the content he's teaching on and his students. There were lot of readings assigned and there are short quizzes at the beginning of each class. He mostly lectures, but designs the classes to be like a casual group discussion. Definitely would take another one of his classes.
He's so boring. He lectures every class about things that are interesting and that you will find hard to connect to soc. Quizzes everyday and he does not prepare you for the midterm+final, and questions can be based on quotes from class so you must be engaged. Do not take if you are not a soc major and want to just skate through the class with ease
This is the second class I've taken with Barker. I don't know why I made the same mistake twice. He doesn't even seem to be trying to teach us. In 3 months he didn't once cover the connection between mental illness and society. Midterm wasn't just to check if you read, not learned. Easy A, but learned nothing. Not worth your tuition dollars.
He posts lectures every week that are sometimes hard to follow. He also never sends out reminders of anything so you have to keep track of the schedule in the syllubus. Multiple choice tests are curved and are based on readings and the lectures so take lots of notes! You have to read 3 books.
Noels lectures are a bit slow and boring but the content is fun if you enjoy sociology. All the papers are mainly opinion based so very easy to complete. The midterm multiple choice was tough as it was all based on the lectures, luckily this class was online. If you need to email him for any reason he always responds promptly and is super caring!
The course itself was ok. Except I wish he was more clear about our grade. You won't know about your grade until the end of the quarter. which is a fail or pass. The same thing goes with his midterm there are about 4 grades and he doesn't give you an exact grade which frustrates me. get ready to read the exams are 75 multiple choice and an essay
Prof. Barker is very well versed in the material. He gives long reading assignments for every class that is quizzed on, they are easy if you did the reading. The midterm and final are okay if you practice the writing sections and study vocab in the textbook. You will never know your grade because he doesn't often give grades back and never in d2l.
This Professor though gentle in his delivery of subject matter he is very serious about what you are to retain and understand. I took his class in the 1980s and what I enjoyed most was in class and after class discussion. Remember to show up for class and participate. Great experience!
Professor Barker is a very intelligent man, but his lectures drag and they get boring very quickly. Every class is a field trip and some of the locations were actually really cool. We had a midterm, final test, final paper, and weekly quizzes. Do the readings and pay attention to what he says, or you won't pass.
LSP 111 was supposed to be about crime politics and business in Chicago but the class ended up being 8 weeks of "learning" about workers unions and a week and a half of learning about Al Capone. The field trips were utterly useless because half the time they didn't connect to what we were learning about in class.
Professor Barker is one of my favorite instructors I've ever encountered at DePaul. He is extremely wise and always has interesting things to say. Show up to class and do the readings, he quizzes everyday and may ask questions that could be missed if you just skim the chapters. Do these things and you will pass!
