She can not speak english. She is not helpful and her class is boring.
I love Astronomy and this prof ruined it for me. Her heavy accent would not be a problem if she spoke with clear, well-formed thoughts. Didn't hand back homework until *after* test, refused to help students undertand material (told us to 'ask each other' about complex ideas). Only good part was using star projector.
I was not interested in this class. I thought it would be a blow off but it was hard. Homework, group assignments, in class assignments, tests, reading quizes, and final. There is a lot of work. She does have review sessions before tests, which are helpful. If do not like astronomy take another science.
She is an ok teacher but it is hard to understand her at times. She is really enthusiastic about the subject, but the class is pretty borin. She gives out alot of homework and does tons of inclass activities so attendance is mandatory. The only good thing is that she uses a weird grading scale, 80-100 is an A. I wouldnt recommend her, take diff.
Very boring class, and she just does not really cover things as much as needed. She does not explain everything thoroughly enough, she tells you to see her after class if you do not know the answer to the in class problems. Her review sessions are pretty pointless. Positives are there's only 3 tests and only 2 count. One gets dropped.
I felt like she didn't teach the material. She showed us a ton of powerpoints that were mind numbingly boring and simple and then made the tests pretty hard in comparison. To boot, if you have a difficult time with accents you will not understand her at all.
This teacher is wacked in the head. I DONT NOT RECOMMEND HER TO ANYONE..RUNN!!!!! She isn't Fair. Doesnt elaborate on the material but, the tests are very hard. Doesnt make sense to me at all. If you have a question you have to wait until after class. Than she doesnt show up to her appointments, or cancels them or has a "meeting"

She really knows her stuff but does not know how to teach it. Hard to understand. She says to ask questions but it is hard to understand her answers if you get one at all. She comes off as she thinks she is better than everybody because she knows the material (intimidating).
Do not take this teacher! She treats you like little kids and refuses to go into detail because it's a 101 course.. WE ARE IN F***ING COLLEGE, GIVE US DETAIL!! When she tries to explain things, she does it like 10 different ways and you get lost after the first time. Her accent makes you laugh though. Anywho, just don't take her.
She doesn't answer your questions very well. Says "so" and "um" a lot. It gets annoying. Tests are hard, grading is odd. Lots of review questions at start of class for points, so it's wise not to miss. Keeps you in class for the whole time, never lets you out early. though. Lots of homework submitted online. Need to have internet access.
Very knowledgeable, not a great teacher though. The material was easy to understand for me. Very little reason to not pass. All quizzes are done online where you are allowed to take them twice (and use internet sources to help). Most homework is done online as well where you are allowed 5 attempts. She even lets you take tests twice. Gotta show up.
She was a knowledgeable teacher, however, she did NOT know how to explain things very well. She would get upset if we got answers wrong to those stupid clicker questions. She assigned tons of hw, and it was hard most the time. Tests are VERYY hard! If science isn't your strongest subject, don't take this class, or ever with her! RUN AWAY FAST!!!!

Do not take her class. She was very hard to understand. She is not organized and made everything harder than it had to be. Extremely unhelpful. Did not answer questions, but told you to ask them. Would go crazy at times about people she thought interuppted class, but how she handled these supposed distractions was actually more distracting.
i agree with the five comments before me, additionally,only takes attendance first four class dates then doesnt care. easy tests, study guides for each. quizzes and Hw done online multiple attempts for each. makes u cross check everything with a partner, annoying. shes foreign and a little difficult to understand. interesting class though.

Dr. D'Cruz is a ball of energy. She has a strong accent, and mumbles a lot. She speaks to her class as if they were children, and does not have any patience. Her empty head has been filled to the brim with astronomy knowledge, and without a doubt knows everything about the subject, she just does not know how to teach it.
Straight up, first 20 mins of class talks about Icampus, online quizes have tedious questions you'd probably look right over when reading the chapter,seriously will call you out if you wisper when she's talking(Not kidding), teach yourself the textbook and you'll do fine, her classes really teach you nothing but what to study on your own.Have an A-

D'Cruz is a wonderful astronomer, she knows more about the subject than the textbook. Yes she has an accent, and it is hard to understand her at times. But she presents the material on a powerpoint, talks you through it, then makes you do problems in class with the workbook. If you can't get the material, your not trying hard enough

Asking another student for HELP?? Nope, in my class that happened while the whole room was up in a chatter, and she screamed at the girl, threatening her to the Dean! Really???!!! (She had put that student into tears!) A little hypocritical, if you ask me. This teacher would be better working in a lab, not in the classroom!
I think that she is very nice. She really enjoys the subject. She lets you print our her powerpoints, and gives you two attempts on quizzes and averages the score. The class itself for me is decent, its all about putting time into it. The subject is diffcult to understand, but there is alot of extra credit opportunites. its all about putting timein

I arrived to class at 1:01pm on the due date for an assignment. We needed to submit it electronically and hard copy by 1pm. I was 60 seconds late(according to her clock, which is 1 minute faster than the jjc tv clocks) and got a automatic 50%. She is an awful teacher and will kick people out for talking even a question. Worst teacher I have ever.
She can be EXTREMELY condescending at times. She is very knowledgealbe of this subject, but gets frustrated when students do not understand. This material is difficult to learn, and I am a straight A student. She seems like an overall nice lady, but really needs to be working in a lab or different environment. Also, VERY BORING!
It amazes me how many people complain about the class because they could not follow the rules. 2 of the postings were in my class and did nothing but complain because they felt rules did not apply to them. Show up, do the work, and ask for help. That is how I passed the class. Just like any other COLLEGE class.
This teacher is horrible. First off, her accent is so thick, you can hardly understand her. She charges ahead with no consideration for the students. She will call you stupid for acting questions. If you already know the material; good class. If not, sucks.
Passionate about the subject but expects everyone to have the same understanding she does. Crams a lot of material into tests. HAVE to have homework in before 1pm, don't even think about being late or it's 50% off. Only 3 tests, drops the lowest score. Recommend that you not miss any class, since the points you miss in class cant be made up
Accent is understandable. Did not make class fun and was a bit confusing in her explanations. Without previous astronomy interest or knowledge you'll struggle. I would not recommend this teacher.
Very intelligent woman,not the best teacher. She doesn't really teach she just gives you the info & expects you to understand it as she does. She does offer help which is nice, but even then her explanations aren't clear. She's a tough grader, everything must be precise. I'm an A student & struggle in this class.I don't recommend this teacher.
If you can avoid taking this class do it! Her lectures are boring and she barely lets you talk to the people around you! she is hard to understand and she is not a good teacher the only reason I got a good grade is because I read the book and taught myself everything! I would not recommend this teacher to any one. The lectures are boring. She crams a lot of info in the test and the test are hard. she does give extra credit for going to obsering sessions. She does not give a lot of homeowrk, but the homework given is hard. Don't take her!!!
This teacher is brilliant. She knows what she's talking about. Don't take this class if you are trying taking it as a science blow off. Absolutely take it if you are interested in learning astronomy as a hobby or major. Get used to her accent. If you can't understand accents, you're going to have a hard time passing college.Go see a tutor is needed
She cannot explain things well. Her directions are confusing, she contradicts herself, and if you ask her a question she acts like you're an idiot. You basically have to rely on yourself and the textbook to do well in the class. She is from India and has an accent, but you can understand her words most the time. It's her explanations that are bad.
This is a college level class. If you expected ASTR101 to be an easy 101 class, it's not. She gives you a lot of work and the work is not as easy as you'd expect in a 101 class. If you're looking for a blow off class, stay away from this one. Overall she is helpful when you are struggling and an overall good teacher.
This woman is by far the worst teacher I have ever had. Class is not fun, can not understand her, jumps around so you don't know what is coming next, and she goes to fast to understand or write anything down. By far THE WORST TEACHER IN JJC HANDS DOWN!
This woman is by far the worst teacher I've ever had in my life! She gets angry when students ask questions. Don't bother going to her office to ask for help, she won't help you. Each assignment from test to quiz is worth 100 points each. So its very difficult to bring your grade up. She's a VERY tough grader. She's a HORRIBLE teacher. AVOID HER!

This professor was very short with students. She gave as much work as I had in a 3rd year class, and was horrible in class towards students. I got the feeling she wanted us to fail.
Prof D'Cruz was nice but was the worst prof I took in college. She makes students feel dumb if they answer incorrectly. Her material for tests and quizzes is straightforward but she is completely out of touch with her students. She should use her doctorate to research and not try to teach.
I honestly thought she was awesome. If you have any questions, just ask her after class one on one. It is much easier.

This is a hard class, so you do need to attend class(class only meets twice a week), pay attention to her lectures & do all your assignments. You have to work for it, but you can pass. Hard to understand her because she does have a thick accent & talks using a microphone. She tends to rush her lectures. Don't EVER be late on a day to turn in HW.
Ms. D'Cruz was a very interesting teacher. Her class was not hard since she showed you everything you need to know for the quizzes and tests in class. Didn't study once and I passed with an 87. Night time observations were very interesting and fascinated me. She does not like when you talk in class and will call you out in a second so beware.
If you are not majoring in something that REQUIRES this class, do not take it. It's the worst 3 credit course I've taken, and I take 20 credit hours every semester. This 3 credit hour online course was harder, more time consuming, and homework took longer than my 5 credit hour course. PLUS, exams are 50% of your overall grade.
Boring teacher, but very nice. Her lectures are confusing. However, most of it is on power-points. Lots of extra credit opportunities, but little credit. Absolutely no food or drink in class. Hands out a syllabus as big as the textbook, and will test you on it. Will ask easy questions that seem like trick questions. Not a hard class.
don't take her class if you cant stay focused or don't like to study. follow her study guides for tests, they match perfectly. tough grader on everything. takes points off for spelling and punctuation. no food, drink, or phone.. you will be kicked out of the class. tests are most of your grade, homework and papers wont help you get your grade up.
Petty grader, she grades you on the way you show your work very specifically without telling you what she expects beforehand. Talks for a long time and is very boring, but hardly covers any material. Seven weeks in and we aren't even out of the first three introductory chapters.
Lectures are mandatory, and you use an i clicker to answer questions during class for a grade. If you read the book and take notes you should get at least a B. Lectures go to the last minute and theres no talking or doing anything while she's teaching.
Absolutely ridiculous. She is rude, boring, and grades outrageously. Dcruz takes points for everything. She is difficult to understand, due to the heavy accent. The accent would be fine, aside from the fact that she is so bland, anyone, no matter how imaginative, could fall asleep through this class. Don't even think about talking, either.
As an online class, be ready to learn on your own. She provides feedback on online quizzes/mastering astronomy and always answers emails. I feel like she wants her students to succeed. In discussions, though, she can be very picky and deduct points quickly for any conceptual mistake; I learned to say only what I needed to say when writing those.
She is very knowledgeable in her field of study but cannot teach it to others. Her lectures are very monotone, and do not capture interest at all. Her grading is slightly unfair, and she doesn't allow you to argue points with her. Class was also in the planetarium, which makes it easy to fall asleep and can really put a strain on your neck.

Professor Dcruz is a great professor, she makes it easy to understand difficult topics. However, this is not an easy class. You have to work for your grade and theres homework/quizzes after almost every lecture. Take notes and show up and youll be good with a B. She also gives extra credit. But if you want an easy class, this is not the one.
She grades super hard. Won't give you points unless you are absolutely exact. Quiz and Homework online that are random and she doesn't tell you about them. She doesn't explain things clearly. All she does is lecture and you occasionally use the book. If available switch classes because this one it terrible.
Does not know how to talk to students properly. Most of the things on the test is not discussed in class. You have to be spot on with your answers or she will take points off for every little thing. DO NOT MISS CLASS!! You can miss a lot in one day. Only take this class if you're going to take it seriously.
This is the worst prof. I've ever had. She gave me a "warning" for violating the code of conduct even though she said we could work in pairs. She is extremely boring in class and makes the class very hard. The book is expensive and you need it, so TAKE A DIFFERENT CLASS!
Keep in mind, she is an astrophysicist, so she is on another level than the average student forced to take the class, and expects a bit more in your efforts. However, after you get the feel for what she expects of you, it is simple to follow thru from there. She is very approachable, and it is admirable how passionate she is about what she does.
This class is an elective and it's about astrobiology which includes biology, chemistry, physics, etc. It's not supposed to be an easy A. Don't expect to just look at pictures of stars the whole time. Once you know what she expects, it's very easy to do well on the hw and tests. She explains things very well and is passionate about the subject.
Terrible teacher and it's the worst class I have ever taken. Lecture is super dry and it's hard to understand her. Test are the hardest thing if you don't answer the way she would wrong. Since the class is very boring and is in the planetarium good luck staying awake. be warned worst class ever!!!
I was very nervous to take this class after reading the reviews. However, it's a laughably easy class. Most of this material I first learned freshman year of high school. That said, she is an incredibly tough grader, and the course is blended, whether or not it is supposed to be. She does laugh at you if you say something she finds stupid, though.
This is the toughest grading professor i have ever had. This was supposed to be a fun class and she made it awful. shes great at making you feel stupid when you ask questions of literally any kind. would absolutely not recommend.
Can't even begin to start with everything that is terrible about this class and this teacher. Honestly, it is so hard to keep up and understand her and the tests are so tricky. If you want a decent grade, I had to put in 2/2.5 hours of youtube videos and self taught. Very stressful class when it should be easy and fun. I do not recommend her.
This teacher does not teach anything that's on the tests, especially the final. The lectures suck, she doesn't actually teach it she just expects you to understand what she's saying. Highly recommend not taking this class.
Astronomy 101 with Prof. D'Cruz is not a fun class. Lectures are super dry and she struggles to explain simple topics. Also, the class is in the planetarium but you only use the sky viewer like twice. At least the chairs are really comfortable!
you have online hw/quizzes like every week. And you have 3 test and the final . she drops the lowest one and replaces with the final . and up to 6% extra credit. She wouldn't let me take an exam that I missed even though I had a doctors note because someone could give me the answers on the test!! like no dude so she gave me a bad grade in the class
Shes awful, most work done out of a workbook. Shell come around and check your answers; if youre wrong she wont correct you. Just yell at you and tell you that you need to know this information, and use her strategies on the board.
She lectures a lot and her lectures arent very clear. She is constantly switching through power points so it is very hard to take notes, when that is really all we do. She requires a work book and a text book. Shes not very friendly especially when you ask a question. It seems like she wants her students to fail.

Truly I am embarrassed for her because not one of her students understood nor was engaged in the class because of her negative attitude. Took this class thinking it was not going to be difficult, but I was wrong. This teacher does not care about her students and will look at you like you are stupid if you do not understand. She has students taking notes the whole time. The tests did not go with the notes at all. Theres no tutors for astronomy so shes the one who will help you.
OK so, i recently had to withdraw from this class because the professors teaching methods are a bit, unorthodox. she has you do the work book during class a good majority of the time you are there, however, you are almost never graded for the work done. i was only graded for one section. she updates/adds quizzes every week without notice.
My worst college mistake. Math was super hard, online work was impossible. I lasted two weeks.
She's reserved/introverted, not rude. This is a true college class. That's all. It runs like university classes do, meaning you have to put in work. Read the textbook (just the sections cited at the top of the quizzes to study plus any other ones you on topics we cover in class bc so beneficial&Pearson is so accessible.) Pay attention in class.
Emotionless, but you learn sm. Take notes from powerpoint AND what she says. Must do: 1) copy the online homework answers (MyLabAndMastering always gives a concise explanation of the correct answers) & 2) quiz answers to study. 3) Read the textbook & take notes, it's not confusing at all. 4) Watch 3-4 short Crash Course Astronomy videos on YouTube.
If you were like me and are reading these reviews and thinking, "well she cant be that bad right?" Well let me tell you this - she really is not a good professor. She tries and I believe that her lectures wouldn't be terrible if you could actually UNDERSTAND and follow what she was teaching. Her tests are some of the hardest ive taken at JJC.
The kind of class that forces me to rely entirely on the book. Professor talks in very dry, run-on sentences the entire class. Extremely boring, leaves every student feeling apathetic and confused on what material is important. Extremely difficult to keep up with lectures. Rude responses to basic questions. Most of the class has dropped. Stay away.
Overall, after you get passed her accent, she is a good professor. Tests are very easy IF YOU PAY ATTENTION TO LECTURES! It's all multiple choice for every test and she usually has them graded for the next class session. Don't forget to do HW (which is on a different website) because they are worth 100 pts each! I missed 2 and im at a stagnant B :(

Very lecture heavy & boring. Tests are hard. Study guides & syllabus super long. Class was tough, it's set up like a real university class, so you have to do the work. Horrible!! I wish I'd dropped the class when i had the chance. She explains everything in too much detail, thus making it more confusing. In one of my discussion boards, she told me I will receive a 0 if I respond to a post saying "Good job on your discussion" I have taken many online classes and never had a problem like this.
Do not recommend this professor. I am currently taking her online Astronomy 101 and she is horrible. She gave me a warning because I gave a personal opinion on a discussion post. She also gives sends out a lot of emails and has so many modules online I got confused once and missed an assignment.
She's a good teacher, but you must try in the class if you want to do good. A lot of people on here complain about it, but if you look over the powerpoint you'll do just fine. The homework is not bad because you get a lot of check my works so you should finally get the right answer.
This is the type of teacher who spends more time trying to control social issues at a school, such as unplugging a telephone, rather than trying to help kids who are starving for education.
TRUST ME, DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. If you read all these reviews and think to yourself, "She can't be THAT bad, right?" Wrong. She's worse. I would never in my life take another course with her as the instructor. She comments on the smallest things and has the mindset that perfection is unattainable. Seriously, don't do it. Absolutely the worst professor I have ever had. Discussions are not actually discussions as her ridiculous requirements prevent any critique of a users post. Her syllabus is over 20 pages long, she doesn't know how to use the online platform and you will get spammed with pointless emails full of "feedback" and useless information. DON'T TAKE.
This is the absolute worse professor I have ever had class with. Do not take her. Amid all this Covid stuff she has tripled the work load and gives resources that dont help with assignments. Her actual lectures are repetitive and dry. Teaches things that arent on the exams and freaked out when someone took a picture of the board. Absolute joke.
She is highly educated but unfortunately does not have the heart of a teacher. She is condescending and can only explain something one way. She writes her own tests and questions are unclear, possibly because English is not her first language. She suggested I memorize the textbook. I do not recommend this class but it is required so good luck!
I read all the bad reviews, and I thought it wouldn't be that bad online WELL IT IS. do not take her class, none of the material lines up with tests- so you're destined to fail. I don't have a single redeeming quality about her class, she is rude in emails, doesn't offer extra help, and none of the materials correlate with what's on the tests.
This is probably the worst teacher I have ever taken. If you have any personal comments on any of your discussion boards forget about getting a good grade. Would not take it again and I definitely do not recommend it. If I could give her a zero I would.

Out of every single teacher I have ever had she is by far the worst. She is condescending, study guides are given, but ZERO questions that were covered in the study guide are on the test. She isn't good at answering questions and just repeats back your question formed into an answer. She gets weirdly irritated if somebody doesn't know the answer.
This professor has grade tests WRONG! Multiple times! She has no regard for her students and lectures do not teach you anything that will actually be on the tests!
I took her class in the fall and we had 3 tests that basically made up our grade. She gives confusing study guide that are filled with so much useless information because it does not help you on the test. She gets annoyed when a question is answered wrong.
Not to diminish her knowledge of this field, but this is a VERY difficult professor to work with. Her method of presenting the material is VERY unorganized and needlessly complex, and will approach any questions asked by students in extremely rude and condescending fashion.
Yeah guys, don't ignore the reviews. I took astronomy for fun, as I'm sure some of you want to, but it's not worth it with this instructor. Very hard to understand during class as she is unorganized and rarely answers questions. Instead of helping students she will scrutinize them for not knowing something until they stop asking for help.
Her class was what I would expect for an astronomy class. It was very informative, but her lectures were sometimes disorganized and a lot of material was crammed down my throat at once. For people who love this stuff, definitely take the class! Make sure you have a notebook handy
I am warning you all..DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS, just trust me! I took this class because it sounded interesting, but she makes everything so much more difficult than it needed to be. Essentially, your grade in this course consists of 3 major tests and then the final. The tests include absolutely none of the information from the homework assignments.
D'Cruz failed to address my disability accommodations appropriately. She disregarded my request for extended quiz time and communicated dismissively. Her inconsistent grading and lack of support created a stressful and non-inclusive learning environment. I do not recommend enrolling in any of her courses, and the board should reconsider her tenure.
THE worst science teacher I have ever had the displeasure of taking. All of her lectures are irritatingly difficult to understand. Every sentence is a runon sentence & never stops talking. Also incredibly mean to boot. I am shocked that she was never fired. There can't so few astronomy related teachers that they have no choice, but to keep her.

There can't be this much of a shortage of astronomy related teachers that she can't be replaced. I would sooner fail college, then take her class again.
READI only lasted a few weeks in the class before I knew this was going to TANK my gpa. Lmk how there are THREE tests??? and a few homework assignments worth 100 points?? DO NOT take this professor - ESPECIALLY if it's an online course and definitely not if you have disabilities or get overwhelmed easily. She moves too fast and gives WAY too much work without explaining anything in depth - and relies way too heavily on the MyLab Mastering practices that do NOT prepare for HER tests which are worth your whole grade.
She is incomprehensible with her accent. Stopped going after 2 lectures because it was so hard to understand. Take another teacher. Please.
This is an incredibly fun class to learn about and take. She is easy to understand and the tests are super easy if you just review the material for an hour. I've never had more fun in a science class than this one. She makes me want to work at NASA.
My experience was completely overshadowed by the professor's attitude. She was consistently rude and dismissive. If you value an instructor who is patient and respectful, I would strongly advise avoiding this class. It's unfortunate because the subject matter had so much potential to be enjoyable with a better professor. DO NOT take w/ HER.
Noella D'Cruz's ASTR101 is no walk in the park. The material is challenging, and her teaching style can be abrasive. However, engaging with the textbook and using Unstuck study for study prep can help you succeed. Not for the faint of heart, but doable with diligence.
I went into this class after reading all of the negative reviews of this professor, but after taking her class I am shocked. This is one of the nicest professors I've had and she knows the materials very well. She is open to answering questions and provides extra resources to students for internship and program opportunities too.
She is awful plain and simple. Be prepared to have to buy some useless book and get yelled at if you don't. Class is very lecture heavy but good luck understanding anything she says. Forget about questions she gets very angry if you do that. You will also be tested on things that were not covered.
I have not even had her for a week, and I am so lost about what we are doing. She is so confusing; she lectures the entire class and will stutter and repeat herself. DON'T TAKE IT!
she stutters, repeats herself, and uses a lot of filler words so its really easy to tune her out and lose track of lectures. also kind of condescending tone in my opinion. there are homework assignments and quizzes, but your grade will basically be whatever you get on the tests. i wouldnt recommend but shes not the worst ever just boring
SAVE YOUR MONEY & TIME. She's incredibly smart / knows her stuff ,but genuinely struggles to translate / apply her knowledge in a teaching form. Modules make no sense bc she loads the first few with modules with stuff that could be helpful, completely throwing weeks off and makes it harder to tell where assignments & quizzes were. Exams are HARD.
I took this online and it was awful. The lectures and homework only make up about 50% of what will be on the exams. I would get 90-100% on practice tests and prep assignments and then get a 60% on the exams. Not worth it unless you love science.
Incredibly lecture heavy. Your grade was based off of three tests you take the homework points and quiz points barely added up. She was so unorganized and everything on the study guide was never on the exam it was completely different concepts. Was also rude if you didn't get the workbook.
