If you can get someone else for tax, please do. I hear she is fantastic for ACT 317, but she is way too disorganized and all over the place to be teaching Tax. Very nice lady, but you'll end up leaning from the text because she misses a lot of things and does a lot incorrectly.
Where do I start... Noreen is a really nice lady. She's funny, goofy, and a little charming. However, her teaching is awful. She bounces around, does not explain anything clearly, and expects you to know everything! Now, I understand tax is one of the harder courses, but honestly, this class killed me. Half of the class failed the midterm.
Really nice, and helpful after you ask her the same question 100 times and she figures out how to answer, your better off learning it yourself
Very helpful prof - really knows her stuff. Extremely approachable and kind.
Noreen is absolutely wonderful. Unfortunately there are a couple of really mean spirited students in this class and another who asks too many questions. She is not disorganized - the IT act is not easy to understand - its complex and these students want to be spoon fed. They need to grow up.
Horrible, disorganized prof. Nice lady though. Can't relay information in a coherent way though. Often gives the students wrong information (taught CEC incorrectly before the midterm, thankfully I knew how to do it before hand). Don't take this class with her, especially when she is in tax season.
Too disorganized. Gave two questions on the final on RRSP's without actually going over RRSP's at any time during the course. Incredibly frustrating class, DO NOT TAKE TAX WITH HER
Yikes! Really nice lady but avoid at all costs! If you have to have her, hopefully you are good at learning out of the textbook.
Absolutely brutal. She is nice & tells good stories but has no other redeeming qualities. Her exams are unfair and her instruction is confusing. I got through, no thanks to her. This woman is a student's worst nightmare.
Awesome. Made me want to take the advanced tax class. Fun, interesting and not to hard as long as you don't fall behind. Hard to catch up if you miss class. Best instructor I have had.
She's actually really nice and is super helpful. Actually wants students to succeed and gives as many marks as she can on midterm's / final
Irvine made accounting as tolerable as possible, and I got the sense she really cared about her students. She seemed to know everyone's name, which was impressive in such a large class.
Noreen is a very caring prof and she definitely gives as many marks as possible on exams/project. She always relate ACCT concepts to real life situations and funny stories. Her lectures are clear, but she can be a bit disorganized sometimes. ACCT317 is hard no matter who you take it with...You have to do A LOT of questions and be familiar with them
Noreen was super helpful! She encouraged students to ask as many questions to make sure they understood the concept. She emphasized what needed to be understood. Do the recommended textbook questions and you'll ace the class. Finished her class with an A+
Awesome teacher. Thanks for a great semester. I never realized how much I learnt from you until I started writing my professional exams. Greatest teacher!
Best accounting teacher I have had. I never realized how much I learnt from you until I started writing my professional exams. Greatest teacher!
Noreen is a very nice person and is a whiz at tax; however her teaching skills are not the greatest. Her lessons were frequently disorganized, she constantly mixed up formulas/dates/times/rates, and classes always felt rushed. Be prepared to read a lot, and learn everything from your textbook.
Awesome prof. Made accounting so much better. She is always willing to help and will help you get better grades if you go talk to her.
I personally, hate accounting. However her teaching for the concepts of accounting are not bad at all. She can be a bit contradictory and disorganized at times, but otherwise she's quite clear....except for this one tax question she did that went over everyone's heads...but she made it clear we'd never be asked it. Overall, good. Tough class though
She is a nice teacher, however she is very disorganized, and rushes certain concepts before tests.
Noreen is an amazing instructor. Offers office hours whenever she can. Very experienced. Never makes you feel stupid for clarifying concepts. Super funny and makes accounting interesting. She warns you that you have to commit approx. 5-6 hours a week of practice problems, excluding class time. If you don't do it, you'll get a C max. No joke.
I was able to get away with her unorganized and messy notes because I basically self-taught myself. But now I'm in the CPA program and I just heavily regret taking her. Take any other tax professor if you want to understand the material.
Best prof ever. I am in the CA program and aced the tax section because of her. Great instructor. Has lots of time for students. Best class ever. Excellent notes - saved my butt in CA classes BIG TIMe
Noreen is a good teacher and she's willing to help students in whatever way she can. This is a hard course and requires a lot of work to do well and a prof can only do so much. She's good.
Noreen is a great prof!! She is really good at making things simpler than the textbook makes them. Course is a lot of work, but if you put in the time it is a pretty easy A, especially considering the grade scale (86+ = A).
Noreen is the best professor! she loves teachng and was so helpful if you had questions. Make sure to do all the questions assigned in the textbook and your guaranteed a B+ or A-
She was a great prof! So helpful and super nice. She always told us to go to her office hours if needed. You could tell she really cared about her students doing well. So glad I had accounting with her.
Very kind and helpful prof. However, course was very rushed. Definitely the best accounting prof available when I took the course. You really do need to put in the work though.
Noreen is good professor for accounting 317, she really tries to help her students and is very nice for the most part. However, her exams are fairly difficult and she's so unorganized it's almost impossible to follow her lectures. Theres no sense of order to her notes.
Great prof. Knows material well. She's also entertaining, so it's hard to fall asleep in class. She goes over questions in class, which I found helpful. Like any course, students should read the textbook and solve problems. Imo, Noreen did a great job of emphasizing the important points of the course!
ALWAYS keeps you late. Ccompletely disorganized. I'm so unhappy with this woman.
Noreen is a amazing prof , always there to answer your questions and help you through the assignments. I recommend that you utilize her office hours because the class is always rushed and fast which doesn't allow her to cover everything. She will give you the extra explanation if you show up at her door in the office hours. got a perfect grade....
Noreen is very kind and cares about her students. But she is so disorganized that she leaves everyone confused. The questions on the quizzes were not what anyone expected. We were told to do lots of textbook questions and that would help you. It doesn't
Great Prof. thanks so much for teaching. I am learning so much in this class. Noreen is helpful and classes are clear and easy to understand - love the notes
Noreen is amazing! Best prof to take tax from. She has great notes and will help you if you don't understand.
Kind professor, but words I'd used to describe this class includes: disorganized, frustrating, and unclear. You need to go to class to get solutions for problems, but the solutions tend to have mistakes. Unfortunately, Noreen is the only professor that teaches ACCT 421. Textbook is recommended, and ask or send her questions whenever possible.
Very disorganized making tax impossible to learn. Keeps us late most days, and only has a few office hours per week so you're left standing outside her office just to try and get some clarity on her mistaken ridden notes. Buy the text and start teaching yourself
Too many assignments worth absolutely nothing. Spent 15hours on a 5% assignment. Also assighments were written very poorly and had to be constantly fixed in emails up until the night before the assignment was due.
Would go through CPA level exam questions that would not be testable for this course. Rarely would go through notes before doing example questions so reading before hand is definitely a must. Very unorganized. May hand out things through email, in class, on D2L - BUT NEVER ON ALL 3 PLATFORMS. Often makes mistakes while going through answers inclass
ACCT 421 is the hardest accounting class in my personal opinion. Noreen is a nice person, but simply a bad teacher. She's extremely disorganized, forgetful, and don't cover important materials. We are expected to work hard, yes, but it would be better to have a more organized prof who at least tells us what's important!
Goes off on tangents constantly. Has the worst habit of handing out some notes, posting some others, and emailing the rest. Horrible format on D2L. Didn't go over all the material. Glad I never have her again. Highly recommend not taking her courses.
Gets frustrated in class when you don't understand something instead of just explaining things differently. Go to class to get documents she refuses to put online but that's about as good as the classes will get. Read the textbook!!! Do the questions in the textbook and the ones given in class but don't expect her to give you detailed solutions
Take Acct 421 in your LAST YEAR!!! To many of my classmates take in after only 1 financial accounting course. What are you thinking - no wonder you have a hard time. This lady saved my ass in CPA - keep her notes.
Throughout the semester I was in a perpetual state of confusion. Though her lectures are clear and helpful she does not seem to follow any specific or predictable pattern when presenting the course material. Go through the chapters every week, spend like 8 hours doing practice questions. Will test on material not covered in class.
Noreen is a good prof and I enjoyed taking personal tax with her. She makes you work for your grade and you better attend class and do every practice problem she gives you if you want a good mark. But if you do all that you will pass well and learn everything you need to know about tax. If you are taking the CPA then take tax with Noreen.
Great prof! The notes are awesome. She's very enthusiastic &helpful. I really liked her. The only issue is the group project: a lot of work to do in little time that covers material you don't learn until 343 (why give an assignment with issues on both sides of the balance sheet when we're only learning about assets?) buy the 343 text early to help!
Unfortunately, I did not manage to finish her class before dropping. It was difficult because there was not enough support material for it. The textbook questions looked nothing like the exams and the exams looked nothing like the notes. Not to mention the notes were confusing and she did not give enough help to students.
Very disorganized prof. Quizzes were ridiculously tricky (didn't pass a single quiz), but only worth 3% . Projects took way too much time to complete and weren't worth very much either. Thought about dropping but stuck with it and the final wasn't bad. Glad I am finished with this course...
I love Noreen. She really seems to care about everyone and wants to do everything to make sure people do well! She can get a little all over the place during lectures. But I still loved her overall just because she is so nice and easy to talk to.
Super nice lady, but is really unorganized and notes seem to be given in a sporadic nature. Doesn't explain what she is doing often or where numbers are coming from unless asked. There are often mistakes in the class notes and the class is left unsure of how to actually solve the problem. I left this class feeling stressed out every single time
Had Noreen for 317 and she was great but 341 was a different story.. She was super confusing, all the details in the cases were wrong, she contradicted herself on everything.. I highly recommend you take this class with Wayne. She was also really unorganized and the tests were nothing like the practice exam she posts. Super nice though
Such a great professor. Tax is hard but Noreen will make sure you know everything you need to go on to take the tax portion of the CPA. Study hard and see where your weak areas are with each quizexamassignment and you will do well. Noreen is very happy to help if you need it. Dont kid yourself though, a ton of work!
I took both MGT 3151 and MGT 4151 with Noreen and this 4151 was way easier due to the amount of material that Noreen has to cover. Noreen has a strong grasp on both personal and corporate tax law and is a great professor to have if you are planning to go on to take the CPA. Go to class! Or dont expect to do well.
What can I say. Noreen is a really bad professor. I am doing okay because I have taught myself; however, she seems to know very little about what she is teaching and makes so many mistakes, you're bound to be lost, even on the easier concepts. Do not take a class with her unless you want to leave every lecture feeling frustrated.
I struggled with this class but Noreen was always willing to help. She is enthusiastic in her delivery and knowledgeable in what she was teaching. Honestly, I think she is the best prof I have had, she genuinely cares about her students. I would totally recommend, just be sure to do lots of practice and don't skip class or you'll fall behind fast.
A very brutal instructor.
Disorganized is the perfect way to describe professor Irvine. Never available, never follows through.
Noreen is an extremely unorganized and unclear instructor. She works a full time job on top of her courses and has no time for her students. Help is impossible to receive from her as she forgets email numerous times, and does not show up to office hours. Her lectures are hard to understand as she does not explain where the numbers come from.
Noreen was secretly teaching this course since Liana McCreadie was so incompetent. Noreen was very rude and even threatened student's careers if they complained about her or her precious Liana. Very unethical. Very disorganized.
Noreen is disorganized and unclear. She told us to never read the textbook and that it was confusing but she didn't teach us material but was testing us on all the material in the textbook. Makes mistakes in class all the time. Misses class all the time.
Noreen is suitable for 300 level ACCT courses. Would not take a class with her at the senior levels. An average prof, not funny but nice to the students. One issue is she often stretches class past the bell. Do the homework questions in the textbook and grab the practice exams from the ASA. I would say she is better than Lakra for this course.
I have taken both 343 and 421 with Noreen. I think people are giving harsh reviews based on the difficulty of the courses. You have to be willing to put in time to do practice q's. You can't expect to learn everything just by going to class but Noreen gives you all the tools you need to excel on the exams. She is very approachable and helpful.
The course is not an easy, a lot of material is covered. Noreen does a good job teaching, goes fast but clear at explaining. Students complain too much about her tests being too hard, however if they actually did the problems and make sure they understand the note package, then you can do good. Always willing to help during office hours.
Terrible instructor, Tests you on material that she doesnt cover. She fell so behind in class before the midterm that we only had 2 classes to learn 2 full chapters of material. The textbook questions are required to understand how to solve questions but she does not even provide answers to these questions so gives us no point of reference
Great instructor. Noreen is an engaging lecturer and cares about her students. The midterm and final were challenging, however they are manageable if you put in the necessary time and effort (no getting around that part unfortunately). Just try to keep up with the material and do as many questions as you can! Its a tough class but I learned a lot!
Avoid. It's crazy how amazing her husband is as a professor - Wayne is the MVP @ U of C, using clear and concise examples to demonstrate learning objectives. Noreen is the opposite. She's disorganized and spends way too much time on easy things. If you don't believe me, try doing the textbook practice problems after her class and notes.
It's been nearly a month since we submitted an assignment worth 15%, and over 2 weeks since our final and she has not posted the grades. Nearly half of our grade is unknown. She shouldn't be teaching if she can't mark in a reasonable amount of time. She also only goes over the easy stuff in class and tests you on things she never talked about.
Wayne and Noreen are like night and day. She wastes a majority of class time rambling on about some useless "hot topic", is VERY unorganized, and is unavailable. She won't reply to emails, and don't expect to see her during her office hours because she won't be there. There are LOTS of errors in her notes, so follow the textbook.
Noreen was very caring and helpful outside of class. Very difficult support but she will do anything she can to help you be successful in the course.
Overall good prof. Took 341 and 343 with her, not a great lecturer but she definitely provides you with all the resources to succeed (course guide and notes). Testing is very fair, all questions asked on midterm and final had been thoroughly covered as well as similar practice questions provided. Just beware of the quizzes!
341 is easily the hardest class you will take in your accounting undergraduate studies. Noreen is an excellent teacher for this class. One of the things I appreciate most about her is that she reminds the students of the most common mistakes that students make on her midterms, so this way you don't make the same mistakes. She also genuinely cares.
Fantastic prof. You realize it even more once you graduate and you just "know" stuff. Take courses from this prof
loved this course! Noreen is the best professor ever. Take Acct 341, 343 with her She helped get me her job
Noreen is an amazing prof and knows her stuff. She tries to help students as much as possible, and if you put in effort, she'll get to know you and put in work to help you outside of classes. She's genuinely a great person, and is passionate about accounting. The RMIN class is a block week, and a very easy A if you put in a little bit of effort.
Her notes have numerous mistakes in them/are not up to date. She is disorganized and when sending out email there are clear mistakes or even parts missing from the so-called "solution." You will need to find the correct way to do things either through the textbook or other solutions not done by her. You basically have to assume something is missing
Noreen has been winging the course since the semester started. She is unclear about expectations and changes her mind about questions, assignments, due dates, class structure, etc daily. Extremely poor time management skills- goes over class time by 5-15 minutes every single class. Does not know how to properly use D2L and blames IT for every issue
I have had Noreen for three classes now and while I agree that she is probably the least organized professor I have, she is one of the best accounting professors for reinforcing concepts and learning tax. She also gives full exams to mimic in person as opposed to D2L fill in the blank exams online which makes doing well significantly more possible.
Participating in Noreen's class is like living a fever dream. If we stopped to clarify every little thing that left students confused, we would never get anything done. That is actually what happens - class goes over time every lecture and we are about 4 weeks behind the syllabus schedule. She takes all criticism personally. Do not take her class.
She doesn't cover everything she tests on in class because she expects you to teach yourself from textbook. Her midterm questions were straight from the textbook. She will kick you out of her class if you turn off your camera for any reason (going to the bathroom? Kicked. If your camera is off you're booted from the lecture). Awful person.
She keeps telling us "You guys did awesome, you guys are the smartest students I have ever taught before". Unfortunately, Noreen is the worst teacher ever in U of C. Other teachers are just boring and we can do self-study, she makes me feel "I don't know what's going on" all the time. She is the only teacher who has an unclear outline.
I literally learn everything from the textbook because I can't learn anything in her class. She will call on people for answers for things she hasn't taught. She will test on things she hasn't taught. The course content itself is maybe a 3.5/5 for difficulty but the way Noreen teaches makes it a 5/5.
I wish there was no word limit on rate my prof so I could explain in detail how horrible this woman is. Unprofessional, rude, condescending, unorganized, RUDE. Avoid at all costs, seriously.
Noreen is not fit to teach at all, much less a CPA prerequisite course. Extremely disorganized, scatterbrained, and indecisive. Changes due dates on a whim. On top of that, she is rude and unwilling to accept feedback from students. Lies to the class about averages on quizzes- says the average is 14/15, but students talk and a majority scored <65%.
Has an assignment due on the day of the final and the content is all from the midterm. Waste of time. 0/10 do not recommend.
She's making her final so that you're unable to go back and review questions, you can only move forwards. She says it's CPA mandated to prevent cheating. I asked other profs and they confirmed that it's not CPA mandated and on their finals we are able to review our questions afterwards. She really makes this class harder than it needs to be.
She is a good lecturer but is so rude and takes no blame or responsibility for things she did wrong. She is also just not helpful, you ask her questions and she doesn't reply or talks about something not related. She talks so much about her past work experience instead of progressing the class so it takes so much longer to finish each topic.
Not a good prof. Grading for a group project online took forever and they didnt assess it fairly. Needed excellent everything to get a good grade. Midterm was all messed up and she admitted to me getting some questions correct because of the wording but wouldnt give me the marks. Anne is the better prof if you can take it with her instead.
Noreen is a nightmare. I found myself stressed the entire semester because of how disorganized and chaotic her class is. She advises not reading the textbook but her lectures only covers a fraction of what content is actually testable. I got COVID-19 a few months ago, and it the pain and suffering was nothing compared to a semester with Noreen.
WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER, AND I REPEAT EVER, HAD IN MY 5 YEARS OF UNIVERSITY! If there wasn't a word limit here I could go on forever, but YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED - PLEASE AVOID AT ALL COSTS!! You will save yourself on mental health therapy by taking this class in another semester with another professor (just pay the extra textbook fees, trust me).
Not even exaggerating I spent 20 - 25 hrs each week just reading the textbook and doing all the practice Qs (not including lecture time, quiz time or time used working on assignments) bc that's the ONLY way you'll do well in her course. Literally the worst prof I've taken in my 5 years at Haskayne.
Worst prof ever. Doesn't respect students, will ghost your emails, is unorganized, doesn't prepare lecture, changes expectation on a whim, and much more but there's a limit on here. Self-taught class but have to attend every lecture because she changes everything too much. Sum it up: I'd defer graduation to avoid taking another class with her.
Even after the semester is over I am still stressed about this class. 25% of the course was graded a week AFTER the final (worth 30% so yes thats a total of 55% unmarked, including an assignment that was due 1 month before the last day), submitted materials are UNREAD and somehow everyone received 100%, and final marks are now overdue by 2 weeks.
This semester was a mess. I understand that instructors are adapting to the changes for online classes but she was EXTREMELY unorganized. Some examples are being 2 weeks behind on lectures, her inconsistent email correspondence timing, or having extended delays with marking our assignments and tests. If possible, do not take this course with her.
Her class was extremely confusing. I don't know why my school hired her to teach basic accounting. Also, Irvine will jump around topics very quickly and makes it extremely difficult to follow her thought process. Overall I would not take her class again.
Maybe it was just because she wasn't used to teaching online, but Noreen is a terrible professor. I would never take another class with her again. Be prepared to self teach even after going to her lectures. She will also literally ghost your emails and to this point we still haven't seen what we received on our final exam. Terrible.
THE WORST EVER! I have so much to say but I am very limited sooo: don't take with her; VERY unorganized; quizzes are so random; given no guidelines on anything; classes are useless; sucks at replying to emails; you will have to teach yourself; role-play is the most useless thing - no one knows what is going on; long story short AVOIDDDDDDD.
Have taken 2 classes with Noreen. Taking RMIN 439 with her was a dream (read earlier ratings to verify, she is great at teaching this class) but I would not recommend taking ACCT 421 with her. ACCT 421 is one of the hardest classes in the acct degree so Noreen's disorganized nature is not a good fit. Great person, but avoid her for this class.
I self taught the entire class as lectures are useless. I am genuinely upset that I wasn't given the chance to enjoy learning about tax and I cant begin to express how underprepared I am for the tax module of CPA. The fact that she is teaching the only exposure we get to personal tax before getting thrown into CPA is highly concerning.
The other tax profs teach you how to fly from the ground up and Noreen pushes you off the cliff and forces you to learn how to fly on your own to survive. Brutal, but effective. Just do the textbook questions and you'll do fine. You can't be spoon-fed for tax. Pretty easy marker and cares for her students. Super nice, but very unorganized.
The honest truth full disclosure: overall, okay prof, you will be fine. Goes out of her way to make sure students understand concepts, but she is painfully disorganized and she changed due dates so many times throughout the semester. There are also two sides of Noreen, nice and then unprofessional, childish and petty. Stay on her good side.
She made us role-play in class and was unbelievably unorganized (there was no outline for the final paper worth 40%). The course content is easy, but the fact there is no structure makes it hard.
As a 5th-year student, Noreen is probably one of the worst profs I have had. She is not organized and has a habit of blatantly lying to students about the reasons she does what she does to students. I have had her for both 421 and 423 and she is very poor. She doesn't respond to emails and gives "role plays" to stop students from reporting her. bad
For the love of god I hope I never have to encounter another class with her... The class itself is so easy but the sheer degree of disorganization and unclear instructions makes this class a walking L. It seems like she puts this class on the back burner while she works her other job.
Although I think Noreen is a very nice person, I do not think she is a competent or organized professor. She refuses to admit when shes wrong and makes things far more confusing for students even with relatively straight forward material. The lack of organization makes sure you have to teach yourself the class and does not prepare you for CPA.
Noreen is very knowledgeable about tax but her lectures are very disorganized and usually feel rushed to the point where she goes over class time. She takes a long time to get marks posted even when she specifies that they will be out on a particular date. Lectures arent too helpful, youre better off using the textbook ppts to teach yourself.
She is the most unorganized prof I have ever had. She does not reply to any emails, and is very unclear of how projects are grades. She does not follow the course outline at all. She also never sticks to what she says, at one point she will tell you something and in the next moment completely deny what she said. The class is fun, but she is bad.
I got mental health issues from this class - and this is coming from a straight-A student. Worst class ever. Noreen is super disorganized: quizzes full of errors/typos, CONTRADICTING + confusing lectures. But you can't skip because she will give random handouts (LIKE ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS) in-person only. Felt like crying after each lecture.
I really wanted to like her because she is nice. But there is a lot of contracting info from the textbook and her notes making it frustrating to study. Her writing is also god awful.
Very unorganized, does not answer emails, and very confusing instructions. I don't know how you can be so unorganized and have confusing/incorrect notes when teaching this class for so long
Goes on rants about herself, her friends, and her family who seemingly are all on the Forbes list. Classes are useless, and her thought process makes me feel like I'm having a stroke. HORRIBLE time management causes us to have rushed lectures. Get ready to teach yourself unless you can follow her absolute abomination of a "teaching method".
Noreen is the best prof I've had so far. Yeah, she is a bit disorganized and confusing, but she really cares about each student. She makes accounting seem fun. The nature of the content means you will have to work hard, not at Noreen's fault. She is super clear about how to succeed in the course and if you do that you'll be fine
Not the biggest fan. Her notes do not cover a lot of testable material and I don't learn much from her lectures and her horrible hand writing. She could easily improve her rating by putting better examples in her notes, not ghosting emails, and being more organized! She is so unorganized it hurts. The course calendar is also a joke to her
The worst prof ever! Never going to take a class with her again. She is so disorganized and had to teach the material myself. She doesn't know how to teach. Her lectures are very boring to be very honest.
She lectures like a slide-reading machine. Might as well skip class and look through the slides yourself...
She made me thankful for the mask mandate because it would hide my tears during the lectures. Picked on particular students and expected them to be tax experts. Course guideline? Don't even bother reading it, she won't follow it. Want to know what you're gonna be tested on? Find out on your own, she won't lay out the specific material requirements.
Lectures are clear prepare you well for exams. Attendance is mandatory if you aren't good at teaching yourself concepts. Very test heavy in grading, however nothing on exams was out of the blue and I felt well prepared and knew what to expect from lectures. Online assignments take quite a bit of time to complete outside of class.
Well done!! thank you for a great experience. Love the prof. Exams are well done and nothing that was not covered in class. Role play excellent and lots of opportunities to talk to her and ask questions!!! Thank you!!
She is a nice lady and very knowledgeable about tax but her class is very unorganized. She does not follow the course calendar. Notes on D2L vs some of the notes she will hand out in person are different which makes it confusing. Roles plays are very scary as she expects you to know your stuff and will pick on every student in the room.
Noreen is quite a character! I lived off of the textbook for 217 but she helped solidify topics in her lectures. Her enthusiasm is the only reason I would retake a class of hers. She has a good heart but doesn't understand that acct217 is a foreign and challenging class, as she just breezes through. Midterms 20% each and final exam worth 40%.
Noreen is an amazing professor. Her lectures are interesting, practical, and realistic. You just need to attend her classes and work hard, do the problems in the textbook and understand the material, you'll be fine. She also invites guest speakers, who are very helpful and awesome.
Noreen was a great professor, she was very detailed and to the point with the material and let us know exactly what to expect of her exams and what she expected of us. She is very helpful and any I had questions were answered. If you're having difficulty just talk to her, she's there for you. I would definitely take other courses with her
Loved her lectures. There were 3 profs and I checked out all three. TAKE Acct from NOREEN!!!
Nice personality and I like how she does examples in class BUT. She makes a lot of mistakes in class, which is frustrating because she goes so fast you only notice it after class. Her notes also commonly have mistakes. How she can have this many mistakes in her course after teaching for this long is beyond me.
Being really honest. She's a nice person and made me believe that I can do well in the class and I did. But she's unorganized and that's real. There were 3 quizzes out of 5 in the outline through the semester due in the end and we did it in the last 3 classes back to back. That hassle could've been saved. No complaints otherwise.
Very nice person and seems to care about the future success of students but lectures have no structure at all. Never follows the course outline. The items tested were never practiced in class, instead, she went on long rants about material that was not relevant or tested on. I strongly recommend taking tax with someone else.
Take tax with any other prof available. Noreen wastes time and does not present the material in any way that would allow students to understand what they will be tested on. Constantly goes back on whatever she said regarding what will be tested and what materials students will need to know.
worst prof ever
Noreen was great. She eased us into topics at the beginning and then threw new ideas at us quickly later on which was great because it lets you take initiative without it being too demanding from the get-go. I never thought I'd like accounting until I took this class which really says something. Overall 9/10 prof, she could be more organized though
Noreen is a good person and generally cares a lot, however, she is extremely unorganized. Probably one of the nuttiest classes I have ever taken. She rarely responds to emails so make sure to badger her after class. Additionally, attending class is important because she will use examples that are on the exams. Read the text and do those questions
You need to work and be willing to listen and show up to class youll be fine
Noreen makes everything super clear. she helped me personally after I reached out saying it was my 2nd attempt. She makes sure everyone has the opportunity to understand and asks questions and she is VERY clear about what is on the midterms and final. She also had some really interesting stories that made the class one I looked forward too.
Very confused by anybody who gave her a 1/5 (probably salty first years), Noreen is one of the most caring profs I have had in the Business faculty. She is very clear about what will be on the exams and will literally walk you through exactly how to execute exam questions. Compared with the other lecture when i took 217 our average was much higher.
Have to read the entire textbook on your own to pass. Only teach a few topics and skip a bunch of important contents. Throws terms that she never taught before at you. The teaching is not preparing students for the exams at all. The in-class examples are way easier than exams, so not that helpful.
Amazing professor and great notes. If you need to meet her for extra help she is always available. Had her for 3 classes at Haskayne and she is the best.
Take another acct prof
Pros: gives good real-life examples during lectures to give context to the lesson Cons: very disorganized, the study packages she gives have so many errors in the answer keys or the questions themself, and you have to pay for those study packages along with Wileyplus to be able to do the homework assignments. very cash grabby.
hard class
exams are super difficult and worth way more than the assignments. super fast class
Her lectures were full of examples and she was great at emphasizing what to focus on. The course itself is really hard and moves fast, but she had good resources and practice on D2L to help. She is accessible out of class and stays after class to help out with questions students have. Overall, she is a great prof but a very difficult course.
The class is fast, and she's honest about it. I had her morning lecture, and she was always seemingly all over the place. Went to a different lecture in the afternoon and she was organized. She is honest about what exams will be like. Exams are fair. Take her tips seriously, and you will be fine, the course is hard, but she will go above and beyond
It is very clear she genuinely cares and wants her students to succeed. She constantly emphasizes the importance of practice and that is the greatest secret to doing well. She provides so many resources to practice with. Her lectures feel so necessary as the textbook doesn't explain concepts nearly as well as her.
Prof was fantastic. Exams were long answer. You either knew your stuff or your didn't. All my friends failed the semester before but really enjoyed the class. The ASA packages were a big help. Someone lied in an earlier comment and said she sold them. She did not!! If you want to know what accounting is - take if from Noreen
difficult overall
hard
If you are taking ACCT 217, do whatever you can to take it with Prof. Irvine. She explains everything so clearly and if you don't understand, will take the time to review it with you until you do. Genuinely cares for her students and it shows in her lectures.
Noreen is a very nice woman, but her teaching style is the most chaotic and disorganized I have ever seen. Every exam consists of 50% things we were not taught in class and were much too long for the 3-hour time limit. You also will need to teach yourself the last couple of chapters. Make sure you do well on non-exam portions of the class.
One of the worst profs you can get for this course go find someone else. She couldnt care less about her students.
very hard class
She is a great acct prof. She goes through concepts a certain way to ensure kids understand it. Accounting is hard and not for everyone, but after every lecture I felt like I learned something and it was worth it to come to class.
Worst and disorganized professor.
difficult class and speeds through lectures. tests are extremely difficult
Convinced she is only in the job to collect her paycheck, she does not care about her students nor does she teach well. She tests hard and will not help when needed.
The best professor I have ever had. If you go to class, ask for help when needed, attend office hours, you will succeed in her class. She wants students to succeed. She is very caring and genuine. She will help you if you ask and put in the work. I wish all professors were like her. Highly recommend her classes.
Irvine's class is challenging but worth it. She explains concepts clearly - stay engaged and use tools like unstuck AI for prep, and you'll leave the course having learned a lot.
Professor Irvine is a great professor. ACCT217 is a very challenging class but she provides lots of really tough examples that she works through in class time. You must come prepared for the class and have at least a basic knowledge of the material she is going to present, she provides it before class on D2L though.
wertyuioghyj
fantastic - don't take any other course from anyone else!!! Lots of office hours. Always available for questions. Explains things well.
I would take every class from her. Great prof!!! Does lots of questions and will also answer any questions that you have. Great examples and guest speakers are amazing.
Prof Irvine is the best prof I have had in university so far, changed my perspective on university and accounting. Now I'm majoring in it and want to take every class with her. To be fair, I didn't miss a lecture, and was always in office hours but it paid off during my midterms and final.
Probably the best professor you could have as far as teaching the material goes. However, the class itself is very difficult and this requires the lectures to be speedy. Make sure to be prepared and on top of the content before going to class, as the professor has no problem calling people out for answers in class.
Noreen is very kind and caring, but her teaching style is awful. She jumps from topic to topic. Does not share keys to questions done in class, and then proceeds to send emails that there were errors (after students start asking questions). She is not transparent about grading. Good person, bad prof.
An amazing proff. The class is tough but rewarding, thanks to her clear explanations, engaging lectures, and helpful examples. To succeed: 1) never miss a class, 2) use her extra office hours—they're a lifesaver, and 3) stay consistent with practice problems. If you're prepared and put in the effort, you'll thrive and truly appreciate accounting!
Noreen was a great prof, she made sure her student understood what she was talking about. She had amazing office hours and was always willing to help her students! Be prepared to do lots of work but don't take it with anybody else. Another big thing is she provided real world examples.
Really cares and wants students to succeed. Good lectures and you will learn alot. Very accesible and approachable. Overall fairly disorganized but not detremental to students (cmon no ones perfect). Also had her for ACCT 217 and she was delightful. Activley took this class instead of a different one since she was teaching it.
While she is a nice and caring lady, this was the most disorganized accounting class I have ever taken. She jumps from topic to topic and doesn't upload the answers/questions she does in class. Last few chapters for the final had to be self taught bc she crammed it all into 3 days by having us teach each other with presentations.
