BEST PROF EVER
what a nice guy. hard tests though
Great guy Pfffpht
Absolutely wonderful. I LOVE this man !!!
Great prof! Labs suck but awesome prof!
Very helpful professor.
Best Prof in second year hands down. Nothing made more sense than the courses he taught. his final is a bit challenging, but if you work at the course then it won't be too hard :)
Probably the best prof I've had so far - very clear explanations and excellent notes make everything very clear. I really liked his style of teaching.
best prof ever
He is the nicest, easiest prof ever in engg. He has really organize and clear notes as well... very helpful.
if it wasn't for norm, digital filters would've been a long nightmare. he made the course so easy. but be aware that his finals are long... very long.
Norm is one of the best professors to date! Always helpful, and quick to respond to any questions. Relates well to students!
very helpful and interesting teaching style. THE BEST TEACHER EVER.
I agree with all you guys, but you all miss something that he looks like our buddy more than a professor, so you would feel comfortable to ask him questions & bug him TOO MUCH,haaa. He is a funny person & super patient. In enel, only few prof (e.g. Hasslet) are patient & helpful. He is one of them
He is a nice guy and very patient. His lecture is very clear and he is quite aware of what students do not understand and what he has to emphasize.
This guy is one of the nicest people I've ever met. He also teaches the course very well and is always willing to help! I Love you Norm!
Very Clear! Very Helpful! don't know what to say he is just amazing. I love him!
Great prof. Take this with him.
Super nice guy
Awesome organization!
Bartley is one of the friendliest profs you'll ever come across. Actually treats you like a colleague instead of a subject. Oh yea, his teaching is top notch.
30 University classes and I've nevvvver had a prof come even close to being as awesome as norm. Seriously, take his lecture and you won't even need to study for the exams. Plus somehow we stay so far ahead of the other sections that we're dismissed at half-time every other class! NORM ROCKS!
I can't believe I wasted over $100 on the textbook and I don't even have to use it because Norm's notes are so good. This guy is amazing, you'd be crazy to take 353 with any other prof.
Best second year prof ever. His notes are so crystal clear you really don't need the book except for practice problems.
Amazing professor, really cares about his students and their success. His notes are freakin' amazing too.
A god among mere mortals. Norm is the freaking man. Never used the text except for assignments.
Absolutely the best Circuits prof ever. So helpful and enthusiastic. I am not in Electrical Engineering, yet he made me love this class.
Norm is basically the****. Straight up
Norman Bartley is pure and simply a god among men.
Best professor for ENEL 353, period. Just read his notes and you're good to go.
While Bartley is excellent teaching ENEL 353, 369 is a bit different. The course is much more challenging, but the methodology in note clarity and implementation in 353 did not carry over effectively for same strategy in 369.
Norm is an absolute beauty, period.
His writing is very, very neat compared to all the other profs I've had so far. Teaches the course in a very basic yet good way that keeps us going every class with no problem. Very approachable and will kindly help you understand something that you may not get. Knows his stuff and an awesome prof to have. You'll breeze through the class easily!
Amazing Prof! His notes are the best. So easy to understand and grasp thanks to his great explanations and does plenty of examples. Some of his test are hard... some are easy. Labs for this class were actually fun and enjoyable! Highly recommended!
He's the BEST at what he teaches. He is totally easy to understand and easily approached if you have any question. Didn't buy the text book, his notes make a perfect one as they are amazingly detailed. Some of his tests are easy and straight forward, some of them are confusing and some of them are easy and way too long to be completed in time.
Absolutely wonderful prof. Had him before, took this course specifically because he was teaching it. I was not disappointed.
He is an amazing professor. I've never seen someone teach so effectively. There is something about him that makes his class enjoyable. Take his notes!!! They are really good and going over them is all you need for tests/finals. Easy marks if you pay attention and go to class. (I generally skip so take that into consideration)
I can't express in words the love I feel for this man. His teachings have touched me in a way that nobody else could. I started attending his lectures mid-way through the semester as I was having trouble understanding explanations given by my current prof and Norm made perfect sense. He is THE best prof for Engg 225
Amazing prof. This is a pretty easy course compared to other first year courses. Attend his lectures and pay attention (don't just take notes without getting it), do all assignments, practice old exams and you are guaranteed a good mark. Recommended!
This man is a god. The final (which he wrote) was pretty tricky, but other than that, he was perfect in every way. He's very passionate about what he teaches and it shows in how much he cares. I want him to be my prof for everything. ENGG 225 wouldn't have been the same without him!
He's awesome!! He cares for your grades, he wants you to learn, very patient... gives the besttt notes everrr. Cracks little (geek) jokes occassionally, which seemed hilarious to me for some reason. He is ultra soft-spoken, overall a great prof!
Can't emphasize this enough: This prof is just AMAZING! His handwriting is the best I've seen among profs and his notes are the best ever. Really easy to understand, he lays everything in front of you perfectly that only thing you have to do is pay attention and note it down. Has a great sense of humor, and has a funny way of saying jokes. VERY hig

He is the BEST. Any students I knew who were not in his lecture still attended because his notes were by far the best. If you have the option, take his class!!
clear notes, clear voice. his examples dont match the exams and he's too nice so the class abuses it and makes a lot of noise. one of the best profs imo
cleanest notes ever....named the best proff in engg in 2010-2011.most friendly, hands up for this guy.. amazing proff...you wont find these type of proff often....
SIMPLY AMAZING!! might be nominated for APPEGA AWARD this year
BEST. PROF. EVER.
One of the best profs. Norm has the really neat writing for a prof. He has a way to effectively communicate the course material to his student. This course is easy if you show up to class. Beware midterm and final was harder then expected but not impossible.
Best prof ever. Extremely helpful, best notes. Although dont expect easy tests cause you understand everything lol. Tests are long so still study.
Good at teaching, very clear notes. If at all possible take a class with norm.
Norm is the cream of the UofC professor crop. Fact: Norm Bartley once plugged a memory leak with his thumb
Brilliant notes, very clear. He has about 3 office hours per day, so if you need help, he is available. The exams are absolutely killer though (midterm average was 48%), despite the entire class knowing exactly what type of questions would be asked. Do lots of practice, and beat the average, and you'll be fine.
Norm is very polite and professional towards students, never once raising his voice or showing signs of disinterest during lectures. His handwritten notes are extremely clear and organized, a rarity among profs. Despite this, many people bombed the midterm and the final. Try to do all the past exams if you want to succeed in this difficult course.
Even better than 225. Dr. Bartley makes it so clear it becomes way too easy. Beware the exams though, since almost everyone can get an A, they make sure to put a lot of questions in the paper, not a lot finish the final and midterm. Cannot recommend enough.
It's a hard course, but Dr. Bartley makes it a lot easier with clear notes and explanations. Be ready to work hard though, this is probably the hardest course he's teaching.
Best prof you will ever meet in your lifetime. He will make all the hard topics easy to understand. His notes are the best for this course. There is no required textbook for the course. If you are good at MATLAB, you can get an easy A+ in his course. Labs are a bit hard, but he is always ready to help. No assignments and quizzes are quite easy.
Best Prof ever! Clear notes and helpful practice materials. Make sure you practice previous 4 or 5 final exams to get a good grade on the final.
One of the best professors at the university. Material is present clearly and with enthusiasm. Any class with Norm is a guaranteed A provided you are willing to put the effort in. Everything you need is given to you. He also is great on a personal level and is the first person to talk to if you have any questions about the program.
Awesome! Clear notes, super friendly, excellent at explaining things, always in his office and happy to see you. Highly recommended
Great Prof, Highly reccomended
THEEEE best prof I have had so far! His notes are concise and to the point, no useless information to confuse you. He has a quirky sense of humour that gets me every time. He is always open to help you and will even forgive mistakes on online homework to help boost your mark! PICK THIS GUY WHENEVER CAN! YOU WONT REGRET IT!
Must attend class! Very polite professor, and his notes are very clear and gives examples a lot. The class may be boring but when you get used to his monotone voice, the class is pretty good
What a great guy! Has amazing notes, and a good sense of humour!
Best explanations and notes!
Had him for ENGG 225 and have him next semester for ENCM 369. Great prof! Clear notes!
One of, if not the best prof in the engineering department. His notes are a godsend and he is always willing to help students. I had him for ENEL 353 and he was always on time, prepared and clear in lectures.
Best Prof by far for first years.
He is the best professor ever! So approachable, kind, easy going, and very very smart! He will help you with anything with a smile on his face. Such a great dude.
very good notes and very nice prof
Wonderful! Nice, very knowledgeable, notes are very organized, lectures are super easy to follow and understand. He's great at answering questions in and out of class. The only issue I had was the midterms were too long for the amount of time given, and he sometimes took too long on easy material meaning we had to go through some harder material faster
Best professor you'll ever have. What a sweetheart.
Nicest prof you'll meet. Brings himself down to your level, which makes class really easy to understand, makes him super approachable, and makes you feel comfortable talking to him about anything. His notes are a work of art and his personality and humor make class a warm and fuzzy experience.
Great prof! But Song Declares WAR!
Excellent at teaching lectures, Dr. Bartley used four colors of pen which effectively provided emphasis to his exceptionally clear notes. Easy to get along with and well respected by students. The course, ENEL 353, had a clearly communicated and well laid out course structure involving lectures, labs, quizzes, and tutorials.
Good professors lays out a proper foundation for students to study and excel in his class. Also by being kindhelpful with students he earns respect from his peers and students unlike certain profs that are rude Enel 469 wink wink
Loved his class. Very organized notes that you should write word for word. Approach and get to know him as he could be your next best friend
Norm is truly one of the best professors in electrical, the department wouldn't be the same without him. A class with him is a must!!!
Nice hair
Norm is an excellent professor.
Good prof, might be slow sometimes but great teacher if you actually pay attention. The exams are not tough, they have a very similar format every year; however, they do have a challenging question in every exam. Study well and you will do well.
Norm Bartley is an amazing instructor, his notes are very helpful and the examples he provides are great for getting your bearings. Circuits can be complicated but the way Bartley taught the class made everything clear and easy. Awesome Course, awesome professor! Take Circuits with him! Also do the old midterm and final for practise.
Great prof, incredible notes, overall really nice and helpful guy, made the course very clear and easy
Norman Bartley is the best prof at the U of C. He is very organized and outgoing. He loves helping students and makes the course very easy to understand with his examples. If you have to take Engg 225, their isn't a better prof. STAY GOLD NORM. YOU THE BEST
Norm is an amazing prof. He reminds me of a kindergarten teacher- very patient, and goes through examples slowly so you can understand. This professor makes me feel like everything is going to be all right.
Norm is a great prof and made me want to go into electrical engineering.
great guy, super helpful.
Norm is an incredibly nice prof. His notes follow his lectures quite closely, and both are very clear and logical. Most students from other classes were attending his class or using his note packages by the end of the semester. Would recommend.
Hands down the best professor in the university!
He is such a sweetie. Highly recommend, you will do well if you follow his notes and keep practicing with examples. The course isn't an easy A but it's definitely possible.
Always a pleasure to have a class with Norm! He is so caring and definitely one of the nicer profs out there. His lectures are pleasant and straightforward. Try to take a class with him! Textbook was used, but available online yay
Amazing class, potentially my favorite out of all of Bartley's classes which is saying something. Very well delivered, labs are amazing, good application of material.
Great Professeor. He posts his notes online and they are very well done ( I only really used the textbook for practice problems) . He posts practice problems and previous test online that are incredibly helpful. I definitely recommend him for both ENEL 353 and ENGG225.
Good prof. Didn't need textbook unless you're doing the practice problems.
The Best Prof.
Norm was amazing! His notes are concise enough to follow, as his posts them online after attending his lectures. He tries to teach it as slow as he can so everyone could absorb the concepts. Reading his notes, doing the assignments, and practice exams from his site would make you golden. Thanks Norm!
Good prof, amazing notes! Didn't even attend the lectures and just read his notes and practised old finals/midterms. Pulled an A even after doing poorly on the midterm all because of his notes!
Really truly passionate about the topic. Inspiring. Notes are amazing which he makes available online, and provides a lot of practice midterms and finals. Also the nicest professor/guy you will ever meet in life.
Excellent Prof. Goes over course content with great detail. If you attend classes, you will understand 90% of the material needed to pass the course. Exams are not difficult if you prepare well enough, rarely would you receive unpleasant surprises. DO assignments and practice problems, they are super helpful in preparing for exams.
Norm is the best! His lectures are really good and he does lots of examples. The labs can be tough but he is very helpful and very friendly. The tests were very difficult so do lots of practice and make sure you keep up with the course and understand as much as possible!
So easy if you don't get an A, you're garbage.
my boy norm!!! he just loves his circuits and makes you wanna love em too in his lectures! super nice guy, enthusiastic, funny, turn up.
One of the best professors out there! Class was very well delivered and labs were very interesting and applicable
he really cares for students. fun lectures
He is a fantastic prof and a really sweet guy. He is really understanding about moving deadlines and actually cares about his students succeeding
Norm was definitely a highlight of the semester, probably the nicest and most caring prof I've had. Very clear in his lectures, with very well hand-written notes that he also posts online.
I've been blessed by Norm 3 times so far in my degree (225, 353, 369). He's a fantastic professor and a really nice guy, who is always willing to help out students. The course material is always very fair, because the general format of exams stays the same from year to year. Do all of the assigned class work and old exams - you will do well.
Lecture felt a bit slow. Only thing I can complain about. Pretty perfect otherwise, highly recommend.
Norm is a gem. Take him. ENEL 353 is really really easy until the final. be ready
I'm in the last semester of electrical engineering. Norm is the best prof of UC ever. I took his 225 339 369 593 courses. Attending his lecture is an enjoyment. Everything is super clearly explained with his nice 3-colored hand writing. Also Norm is a very nice guy. You don't want to miss his courses if you are in EE.
Whenever I'm talking to doctor Bartly, I honestly feel like he's a true father figure. The man is a GOD !! Best lectures of my degree !
Very boring prof. Very easy to fall asleep during lectures. Doesn't go over the specifics required for exams.
As the course coordinator, Norm has made Engg 225 a very doable course even if you are as bad at circuits as I was. His lectures are a tad dry but you can tell Norm truly cares about everyone's success. We all fell in love with his adorably geeky personality. Norman Robertson Bartley is a gentleman, a scholar, and an absolute legend.
Norm is amazing and gives really wholesome lectures. He made me wanna like circuits! Just be sure to do enough practice for exams and you'll do fine.
One of the best profs in the U of C engineering department, he clearly cares about his students and gives great lectures. One of my all-time favourite profs.
Amazing legendary prof. Deserves the best. Even though lectures can get boring at times especially at 8AM, amazing at teaching and truly cares about his students. Definitely reccomend.
Nicest prof one can ever have. His notes are easy to follow. Lots of respect for him.
Norman has the best rating on RMP from all the UofCalgary profs, and rightfully so. I have to search for any reason why this guy wouldn't be a 5/5, and I honestly cannot come up with anything. An amazing lecturer, clear and well-structured notes, polite and adorable. If you are / will be in block 2 classes, I promise you, you will love Bartley :)
An absolute legend in the engineering program. His notes are the gold standard for this course; every prof makes some variation of them, but it's just not the same unless you experience them from him. Lectures can be delivered a little flat, but all for the purpose of making the material easier to understand. Cares about his students.
Prof Bartley is one of if not the best professor Ive had in engineering so far. He makes course materials intriguing and enjoyable and goes above and beyond to make sure topics are understood well.
Norman Bartley really cares about his students and it shows in the ways he tries to ensure students are reaching their full potential in his classes.
An absolute gem of a human, Bartley along with Norman easily gave me my best experience so far in online classes. I've never found it so easy to learn lecture content, I felt 0 stress from this class the entire semester. I wish every prof could be as amazing as Bartley.
Always responsive to emails, all round great prof and guy.
Love this guy, his notes, and his attitude in teaching. One of the most enthusiastic profs I've had
He is a real gem in the Electrical department was lucky enough to get a full course with him the quizzes and exams were not difficult they were out of notes which made it an easier time to understand the content not just rush through it because you are motivated to look through your notes not just memorize them. Highly recommend him. Notes are nice
He cares about the student's well-being as he has made the online learning experience very manageable. His lecture notes are also amazing.
The software department was lucky to have the norms throughout the 2nd year really made a fun semester with the notes and the tutorials great work all around highly recommend this duo for greater things. Made the content doable if with anyone else I wouldn't have done this well Norm Bartley knows how to deliver excellent lectures.
The lectures were great, the quizzes were designed to help us learn rather than just test us, & Norm himself was incredibly open! When I got a date wrong and missed an important deadline, I reached out & Norm let me complete an alternate (slightly harder) assignment - he didn't even penalize me for being late! He really cares that students succeed.
I took two online courses with Norm Bartley and Steve Norman during the pandemic. I had a tough time learning online, Norm and Steve adapted very well. Both very professional and knowledgeable, definitely some of the best at U of C as I learned a lot from them compared to other classes during the pandemic.
The lectures were great, the quizzes were designed to help you learn. He is extremely understanding and really cares about students education.
Norm is off the charts
I accidentally handed in the wrong file for my final exam. 3 weeks after everything was over, This legend and Dr. Steven Norman looked at the work I did not hand in before and Passed me with flying colours. I am crying writing this thank you so much
Norm is an amazing prof! He has pre-recorded videos and live lectures. His notes are awesome and you should definitely go to his lectures. The quizzes were easy, the midterm/final are both heavy and cover a lot of content. Best way to prepare for assessments: Do as many old tests as possible, our exam questions were very similar.
Great guy, nice, Easy to follow his notes, posts practice problems. All around great prof to have
Best professor in the University of Calgary by far. Not only is he a great professor when it comes to teaching, but is very understanding when it comes to anything that comes up outside of class. Answers emails very quickly and is very generous with his marking.
Amazing professor. Very well-paced lectures with small bits of humor thrown in here and there. Will always give you practice that leaves no surprises for the exams in this class. Still a challenging course but I never got overwhelmed, which may have been different if I didn't have Norm as my professor.
Norman Bartly was absolutely GOD in UofC. I took ~3 courses with Dr. Bartley, and every course is well designed, simply following the lecture is enough to make you successful in the course.
Norm Bartley is probably the best professor I have had so far. He is great at giving lectures and his notes are very clear and easy to understand. His courses aren't super hard but you definitely need to apply yourself to do well. He is also super nice and is great at answering any and all questions you may have.
Man's the most interesting prof. He is so funny that the entire class finds him hilarious. He is so entertaining that everyone sleeps in his class. He is so interesting that even a 1000+ pages novel sounds interesting. He is so slow, even my grandmother speaks faster than him. Never sign up for his morning classes.
Norm is very kind and caring. He wants his students to succeed. His lectures and notes are very easy to understand and he is very helpful in the learning process.
The dictionary defines "Sigma" as: Norm Bartley. And I agree. Absolute legend of a professor, he is the type of man you'd want to tuck you in at night, but also pray to him like a god - a deity if you will. All in all 10/10, would recommend. Love u Mr. Dr. Professor. Papi Bartley
One of the friendliest profs I've ever had at U of C. His lectures and notes are amazing as well! 10/10 would take again.
i love this man. norm = best prof (other than the fact that the final is worth 50% rip)
Made learning the material really easy to follow. Always made sure to prepare his students for quizzes/exams with practice problem sets, and tutorials that highlighted the important aspects of the course with clarity. His notes are precise and on point each lecture, with each lecture always having a purpose. The best prof I've had so far easily!
Doesn't get much better than this. These are the best lectures I've attended so far in university. He goes over the material so carefully that it's impossible to not be on top of this class. So glad to have been in his section, and I would go out of my way to take future classes with him.
Legend
One of the best ENGG profs around, an absolute legend, and for a good reason. The nicest man you will ever meet, and teaches very well. One of the tougher courses, but can be made very simple if you pay attention to him. Amazing prof and his reputation precedes him!
the 5 star reviews are accurate. He is one of the best profs around in eng. Get him if you can. Fyi make sure you get good lab partners.
Amazing professor who cares for his students. His lectures and notes are one of the best at this university. Make sure to get trustworthy partners for lab.
Easily one of the best professors from the ENGG faculty. Very thorough with his explanations and answers, and he cares about each student very carefully. Put some effort into his classes and your grade gets rewarded in return with solid teaching. Would take his classes again easily.
Professor Bartley is a fantastic lecturer - he explains concepts meticulously and genuinely cares about student success. Unstuckstudy and the course textbook are great study aids too.
His open door policy for office hours is the best thing ever! Dude is willing to help whatever question you have even if he doesn't teach ur class. Actually cares about you as a person. Genuinely nice guy. Good lectures. Fair tests. Highly recommend
Down to earth professor who knows exactly what he's doing and can clearly convey the concepts in class to students. He is also very caring when going to his office hours, where he answers questions to the fullest extent and makes you feel more confident after speaking with him.
Mr Bartley is simply the most amazing professor I have ever had .
Coming from a background outside of electrical engineering, I was apprehensive about my ability to do well in this course. Norm Bartley did a fantastic job in delivering the course content, and was regularly available for questions outside of class. I came away feeling like I had truly learned a lot. The gold standard for a university lecturer.
