Don't waste your time going to his useless lecture. He somehow turns what should be an easy lecture into impossible because he's an ass. Awful. Just awful.
He once lectured about why you should never give someone CPR. He is legit the worst person ever. Don't take him your first semester, you won't be ready for such a terrible man. Take bio or something. Everyone hates him. He's unreasonable and teaches you NOTHING.
Professor Dean is extremely unorganized, lacks the ability to explain things clearly, he is unable to understand the needs of his students, the list could go on forever. NEVER take a class with Professor Dean
Terrible professor. Constantly contradicts himself. Review sessions make the tests harder to take. Refuses to explain material and answer questions
He will be of no help to you at any point throughout the semester. He is not concerned with how his students are doing or how they feel about the course. I asked him a question about a lab once and his response, was rude, unhelpful, and condescending. The average exam scores were low C's and high D's. Overall, worst professor I have had.
Literally doesn't care about how terrible exam scores are and even laughs when class averages are low. Completely useless as a professor.
He is not helpful to the students whatsoever.I think this approach helps us in the long run though. The exam was crazy difficult, but if you TRULY THOROUGHLY understand why the chemistry is happening, then you should be good. I believe the above negative responses are students who are not accustomed to this level of difficulty.
The. Worst. Dr. Dean doesn't care at all about how the students do in his class. The midterm/final was ridiculously hard and his lack of providing any type of rubrics for the lab reports or other work proved his unwillingness to help any. He would just say GO and then grade horribly. His lecture is very boring and completely useless. Avoid him.
He is the worst teacher I have ever experienced. I completely understand the chemistry behind each experiment (A+ in C117) and yet Dr Dean confuses me. He also made my lab AI lower all of the grades in my lab section (because it was above the average) without reading any of our lab reports to see if he disagreed with my AI's grading.
Dr. Dean is terrible. He only teaches one class, and he should be teaching 0 classes. His help session are not helpful. He is averaging an overall rating 1.0 for a reason. The chemistry isn't hard, but he makes it hard to understand. He isn't fair in his grading. He decided not to curve our midterm which averaged a 65%. Try to avoid.
Everything that has been written so far is a dead on description of prof. Dean. His lecture are useless and he just rambles at you, review session are hopeless and midterm was impossible. He is not helpful so unless you have an AI who is willing to help you out, you will struggle in this class regardless of how well you do in 117. He is awful
He gives out grades without telling you what he wanted. It's like guessing what a random number generator is going to pop out; the right answer is 'a number' and that's the closest you get to help. The best you can do is put all information humanity has accumulated, ever, on the lab reports and tests, then maybe you'll get an A. Maybe.
Professor Dean is legit the worst professor I've ever had. His lectures are completely useless; you learn nothing in them whatsoever. For the biggest lab of the semester, he told the AIs to not help us at all and to actually tell us that we didn't have to do certain things when we did. Don't take this class if you care about your GPA.
If you want to sit through a lecture with no attendance that has nothing to do with anything useful, take a midterm and a final over nothing he has ever taught in lab or lecture with 20 point questions that are impossible, and a class that offers no rubrics or helpful advice toward lab reports, exams, or lab practicals, then I highly suggest him.
The professor's lectures were useless. He failed to describe anything clearly. The grading on the labs was extremely difficult as he refused to hand out rubrics beforehand. Tests were also very hard because the problems were never covered anywhere else in class.
Professor Dean is one of the worst professors I have ever had. He does not care about student grades and he acts condescendingly towards students. He tests over material not taught in class and he grades the tests harshly. Try to avoid him if you can.
WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD AT INDIANA UNIVERSITY. I got an A on all my pre labs, post labs, and lab reports, but got a C in his class because his midterm and final exams are terribly difficult. He does not curve these exams either, no matter how poor the average is. Nor does he respond to emails when students want extra help or assistance.
Lectures pointless. Promised a curve for the class multiple times and never applied one. Some info on the midterm & final was never taught. Happy with D averages on tests. Doesn't communicate well with AIs. Expectations not clearly explained. Has review sessions before writing the tests. Awful. Try your best to never have him
Disappointed to see he is still teaching even if he does have someone else assisting. Not because I am mad about my grade, but because the cycle of his awfulness will continue.
I took this class last summer, and Dean was in charge of lecture. Being a summer class, the material was kinda cut down. But I do like how he writes out everything on the board, and will stop and go back if there are questions. I have had more clear instruction, definitely, but he isn't terrible. Make sure to keep up with the problems.
The concepts are relevant, the labs are okay. The issue is the disconnect between Prof. Dean and the rest of the world. He is cheerful during class, but disrespectful and uncooperative outside class. I have received almost perfect scores on the Labs/reports. Got an AVERAGE grade on the exam, D, and will get a C. This class is a major requirement.
He is an awful professor, heard he's getting fired. My grade won't be saved but at least students in the future will have a better chance at learning
He is the worst! his lectures are pointless. He has an optional saturday class that is actually not optional if you want to pass. Many things he says in the saturday class are not repeated to the full class in lecture. Most of your grade will depend on if you get a good AI who actually speaks english.
He is a cynical man who enjoys the agony coming from failing students. Attended Saturday sessions because this is the only way to get him to teach. Great head AI but I can tell he hates him too. Go to office hours with an AI who isn't extremely full of themselves and just pray you make it through.
Lectures are pointless. I attended the first two and decided to never go again, because they were that useless. The questions on the exam do not all relate to the labs, and the exam is open ended. Though, later exams are being changed to multiple choice, because this exam average was a C-. Labs are easy, the two exams are the difficult part.
Such a horrible teacher. He is not helpful at all and his exams have been the hardest I have ever taken! He does not explain material and pulls random questions out of nowhere and tests you over them. I have averaged A's and B's in the lab portion but because of the midterm and final, I will be lucky to even pass this course.
Norman is the worst professor at IU. He told the AI's that the students should be failing the class. Lectures do not help at all, he just talks about what he posts online. Thankfully, I had an awesome AI who helped during lab and graded really nicely, ending up with A's on assignments but failing the exams. Let's hope there's a curve.
Attending lecture is not necessary to receive A's on lab reports or understanding how to do lab. All the required information is in the write up. He does not respond to emails from students. Exams are beyond difficult, not because of the material, but because he is very ambiguous and does not specify what needs to be studied. Brace yourselves
Norman Dean actually goes out of his way to TRY to make students fail. He is completely out of touch with students, teaching, and reality. His exams are schizophrenic with no way to effectively study for them. If you are required to take the class be sure to get an AI that speaks english well. Tip, secure a TUTOR immediately if required course.
Dr. Dean is a good professor despite what people have said before. I was nervous about him being tough, but he is a really great guy. The class has changed a bit since the 13-14 year. Pre and post labs are a lot easier and attendance is not required. If you need help he will definitely help you.
A very helpful professor, willing to help if you have questions.
Norman Dean assumes that you've have an amazing background in chemistry and so tests you over things that you probably have never seen in class. Get ready to teach yourself chemistry.
Dr. Dean is extremely fair and really cares about students. I think a lot of students are not prepared for this class and that's why they struggle.
Professor Dean's lectures teach very little to help you write a lab report about what you do during labs. The extent of his usefulness does not go much beyond providing the procedure and safety tips. After that, you are for the most part on your own unless you have a good AI. His tests don't correlate well with post-lab assignments.
Dr. Dean. Upon the utterance of his name the words conjured include terrible, horrible, annoying, gross, unhelpful, stupid, and destroyer of everything fun you thought chemistry would be. Get ready for tests that ask about things no one has ever learned ever in multi-paragraph essays. Crying, clawing of eyes, and extreme depression included free.
Get ready to rely on your AI. Dean is the only intro chem lab professor, so if you're a science student, you will have him. He writes his exams the morning of which basically consist of free response questions sort of related to the labs you've done. Pad your grade with good prepost lab scores by going to your AI's and prepare for hard exams.
Dr. Dean is not as bad as everyone makes him seem to be. The fall 2014 C-127 seems to have been partially revamped, making the class somewhat easier than previously. Put plenty of effort in initially and then gauge where your grade is and where you want it to be. The tests can be difficult, but group and head AI office hours were helpful.
his exams are ridiculously tough and no amount of studying can prepare you for them.
basically you have to reteach yourselves everything you know about chemistry. His test are the most random collections of question that half the time dont even go with what we "learn" through the lectures and the labs
An overall difficult class. Success in lab is very much dependent on your AI. The problem is that the prof doesn't prepare students very well for application type questions on the exams, which is all we're really tested on. He speeds through notes and there aren't nearly enough practice problems to help you prepare.
This was a very subjective class and your grades are highly dependent on AI's. Tests are very hard, especially given the fact that you never know what will actually be on them. The grading of them is also very mysterious and not very well structured. Post-lab grades are also very dependent on your AI. This class lacks structure and uniformity.
I have never seen a teacher ask test questions so loosely correlated to a course's content. Many do not relate to the labs or lectures at all. Not sure how this is justifiable. Score well on your post-labs because no one does well on tests.
The final exam was entirely unrelated to the chemistry that we learned in lab. This is an introductory chemistry course and I was expected to understand chemistry that we didn't even cover in lab. The practice exams are also nothing like the actual exam you will take. AVOID if at all possible!!
Norman Dean is not a good professor at all. He has a sense of arrogance that makes him completely unable to relate to students and not a good resource for help. He will make you look and feel stupid for asking questions and even act mad that you did so. His lectures are long and painfully boring, and his tests are pretty tough. Class was curved
Extremely inconsistent and lazy. Awful professor.
Offered to regrade the final exam that the AI's originally graded, never got back to me, and didn't regrade it at all. Left my grade the way it was which I believe would have been higher had he actually cared to keep up with his offer.
The actual lab reports, post labs, and pre-labs are what saves everyones' grades. A majority of the class failed the final (he said there would be a curve, I think it was curved about 3 or 4 points). Best advice: work your butt off in labs, on lab reports, and post-lab assignments. Don't rely on tests for anything. Going to lecture is 50% helpful.
Dr. Dean is NOT that bad, and you barely interact with him anyway. Go to lecture and AI office hours, research labs beforehand if possible, and have a good attitude. It's a difficult class but it's not impossible.
Dean is terrible. The labs werent explained in lecture at all. Barely any guidelines were given for lab reports and the grading is done by AI's who have no idea what they are doing. The two exams look like they cover material that we did in labs, but no matter how much you study, its almost impossible to do well.
Dr. Dean is not the most helpful. His AI's all grade differently and there is no structure to the grading.
Professor Dean is not very helpful at all. Try not to ever interact with him. Attending lectures are your only hope of passing the tests. Take very good notes. Study all of the lab worksheets and take his practice tests to do well. I got lucky and had an AI that grades the long lab reports pretty fairly but my friends weren't that lucky.
I had heard of the horrors of Dr. Dean, if he even deserves to be called a doctor, but I was skeptical. The first lecture was ok, but the rumors were soon confirmed. Dr. Dean is the saddest excuse for a professor ever. He is extremely condescending, not at all helpful, and is generally just rude. Change your major before you take his class.
He just shows up to lectures and is very unclear about what we are to do. Gets aggigated when students ask him for help. Not sure why IU keeps him around. My lab AI is the only reason I even got a C in that course.
His test are horrible. He grades very harshly. He has to curve very much in order to look better, because he is on academic probo. NOTgreat at all
Norman Dean is a worthless professor. No one passes his exams, he is on academic probation, he will not help you with anything, and has to curve the class to cover himself. There are only two exams and they are the most vague, unrelated questions you could imagine. Avoid him at all costs.
Easily the worst professor I have ever had. He will say things in class (like "there will be a curve for the class") only for his head AI to contradict him. So basically you have a very unclear way of how you will be graded. If you can get any other teacher for this class, it is in your best interest to do so.
Not helpful one bit. Makes tests that have nothing to do with what you did in lab. lectures are long and boring. Not sure how he still has a job. Absolutely terrible teacher to deal with.
Tests are pretty difficult but they're not worth that much so it won't affect you greatly. Just nail the lab reports and you should at least get a B. With an average amount of effort I got an A-. By the way don't go to his lectures because they are absolutely useless.
Most of his lectures have little to nothing to do with the actual class. The lab reports are not too difficult, but that is undone by the difficulty of the the midterm and final (which account for roughly 30% of your grade). Most of the midterm and final are based off obscure conceptual details from the experiments, which makes preparing tough.
What is wrong with the tests in the course? It does not matter how much you study, it seems almost impossible to get a good grade in the tests. Horrible class. I barely learned anything, and the tests were just plain awful.
Worst class I've ever taken and worst professor. He acts like all the students are stupid and he has so much more knowledge that he is doing us a favor by giving bad grades. Unfortunately, this class is mandatory for science majors so be ready to not learn anything and to not get a good grade even if you try. I don't have anything good to say...
Your grade depends on who your AI is. I had a tough AI who graded harshly but my friends had sweet ones who graded nicely. However, professor dean was nice enough to bump my grade up which helped. The pre-lab quizzes were awful, but he gave some information about them. As long as you attend lecture and labs, you will be fine.
Course is difficult not due to the material but you do not know what you will be tested over, as the tests usually cover things that were not really discussed in class. AIs grade lab reports and can vary from different AIs. Would highly recommend to go to all review sessions as he often gives insight into the tests.
Attendance to the lecture is not mandatory, but very helpful if you are wanting to succeed in the lab. Attendance to the lab section is not required, but if you'd like to pass you must go to complete the lab and the corresponding materials. Going to the lab, participating in the lab, taking notes, and attending lecture will be very helpful.
The midterm was impossible not even worth your time to study because nothing on it was taught in lab
Dr. Dean is not a very strong professor at all. The lectures give you some concepts that you should study for the midterm/final, but they usually have no relevance to the lab. You will spend most of the lab time trying to figure out what you are even doing. AI's are no help. Don't bother studying, exam questions have little relevance to lab.
I would suggest going to lectures unless you want to study the experiments outside of class. The test questions are all related to the concepts that he explains in the lectures and that you have to know to understand the chemistry of the experiments. If you attempt to understand what is going on and do the post-labs etc., it should be an easy A.
Norman Dean does not care about his students. He doesn't care if they pass or not. Every email I ever sent him received no response, and asking questions during lecture result in the students embarrassment because of the way Norman Dean treats them. What sucks is that you need his class for C127 lab, there's no way around it. So just be ready.
Honestly, the lab itself is not difficult. Many people do not attend the once-a-week lectures but they are actually extremely beneficial to your understanding of the following week's lab. However, his midterm and final are RIDICULOUS. You are allowed to use your lab notebook on them but some of the test material is not relevant to the labs at all.
This class is hard, but not impossible. Your grade depends on who your lab AI is and how they grade your post labs. The exams are impossible and the only thing that helped me to study them was to go through the pre-lab quizzes.
Norman Dean is the worst professor I have ever has at IU. His exam are ridiculous and he himself takes no pride in his students doing well on his exams. Luckily, I had an amazing AI that helped me with the post labs and questions during lab. He was the reason I got a B in the class. Overall, Dr. Dean is a horrible professor.
Midterm and finals are not as bad as everyone says, though I agree that Norman does not prepare you very well for them. Tests are rigorous and thoroughly test your understanding of underlying chem behind each lab. Grading is unfair since most important grades will be your lab reports, which are graded by A.I of varying strictness.
Could have been worse. Dr. Dean tries to be friendly & helpful, but students seem to receive him poorly. Exams are tough, but I've heard they have gotten easier over the years.
His lectures cover info that is sometimes useful, so I recommend going to them, but if you miss a few, it's no big deal. I had an amazing AI who seemed to really dislike Norman Dean just as much as the students did, so he really did his best to help us out. Grade heavily depends on who your AI is. Dean himself doesn't do much for you/your grade
Everyone seems to hate him but he is actually a really awesome dude. His tests are hard but he compensates with ridiculously easy labs that make up most of your grade.
I found it really hard to study for his exams-you never really knew what to expect. Focus on understanding the purpose of the experiments and know the lab protocols very well in order to get a good grade. To get an A make sure you put in a lot of time on the lab write-ups/post lab questions since they make up most of the grade.
Studying for the midterm and final is near to impossible because one does not for sure know what will be on the exam. Best advice is to do really good on all pre and post labs to get the points.
Dr. Dean is one of the most caring professors at IU. He is VERY intelligent, and his office hours are a great resource!
He seems a bit arrogant and does not make himself available to students, so your whole experience with his classes will be dependent on your AI. His lectures are not necessary because everything is explained in the lab procedures posted on canvas. His tests are very difficult to study for, but not impossible.
Norman's lectures are pointless, but I went and he would sometimes give out answers to pre-lab quizzes. Grade depends on your AI. Mine graded easily and gave us old test questions for midterm & final that he would sometimes reuse for the next year. His tests aren't impossible if you go through introduction and post-labs carefully.
I hated this man. He was awful. He didn't give you anything to go off of for exams, and would deliberately try to trick his students into doing badly. I tried to talk to him at office hours and he was horrible. AVOID.
Lectures are fine. Material is fine. Labs are kind of cool. Quizzes are based on reading and are fair. Exams SUCK. they are full of trick questions and material that was not covered. Your only hope is a good AI. My understanding is that if you are CHEM or BIOL you cant avoid him. So go to office hours and make sure to do well on quizzes labs.
If you can take the class with anyone else, do it. I would say this counts for any class Dr. Dean is teaching. I have not had a more incompetent professor in all of college.
Norman Dean is teaching an unnecessarily difficult course. The fact that this course is 100 level is totally misleading - if you aren't on top of your game you will do poorly. Exams aren't as bad as people suggest, you just need to know / refresh material from C117. I actually did worse on the labs than the exams (I aced both). Get a good AI.
Taking his class made me question why I was a Chemistry education major, as well as my existence.
He uses the slides provided from the book, so there is legit no need to go to class. The book sums everything up. The discussions are not helpful. We essentially do worksheets and the AI has no idea how to answer our questions. The exams are tough and sometimes you have 90 problems due, an exam, a lab report, and a quiz , all due in one week.
His exams are very hard and are nothing like what is done in class. His lectures are literally word for word from the book yet his exams are completely different from problems gone over in class. Avoid this professor at all costs.
Was by far the worst professor I've ever had at IU. He doesn't care about his students and actually takes pride in his students doing poorly. The lectures are not helpful and the assignment instructions are unclear.
He is an awful professor. No matter the amount of effort you put in to the hw and tests your grades will not reflect it. He does not have a straight forward grading criteria. The AIs grade all differently. The midterm and final are extremely hard.
The absolute worst class I have and most likely will EVER take. Norman makes the class way more difficult than it needs to be for a 100 level. The midterm and final are not relevant to anything learned in lab. He does absolutely nothing to prepare his students for the exam. Avoid this professor at all costs. No amount of effort is enough to do well
If you are a student that is pre-need, and is actually smart enough to be pre-need, you will get an A in the class. The tests are easy if you understand the concepts in C117( got As on both) and the worksheets are applying concepts you learn in C127. Everyone that gives him a bad rating are people whos grades didnt get rounded up at the end.
Honestly one of the worst professors I've had at IU. My lab class averaged a 50% on our first two lab reports and he didnt care. The exams are completely irrelevant to what was taught in lecture. The people saying he was good definitely got easy grading AIs. Cross your fingers and hope you get a good AI if you have to take him.
I'd give him a zero out of five if it was possible.
WORST PROFESSOR IVE EVER HAD!!! Took this part online and his canvas page looked like it was made by a elementary school student. If possible do not take this with him!!!! He does not prepare whatsoever for your assignments
It's terrible. Every assignment is out of 1 point. Notebooks are an easy 1/1 as long as you include everything he asks for. Worksheets are a nightmare. You'll spend hours on a worksheet and get a 0/1 with little to no explanation as to why. Not fair to students. Terrible at replying to emails. Optional quizzes are near impossible.
Do not take this lab with this professor. He does not care about students and makes the worksheet out of one point. You either get one point or a zero. The optional extra credit quizzes are nearly impossible and never responds to emails. Good luck if you do decide to take this course. You'll definitely need it.
Class was disorganized and prof. dean showed very little enthusiasm for teaching. The labs themselves were fine and honestly the class content isn't horrible but the organization makes it super frustrating. If you need to take 337 good luck because he is pretty much the only teacher.
