So boring- get ready to fall asleep during lecture. You can tell he likes the subject, but doesn't communicate it in a very fun way.
His lectures are really boring! And his exam was the hardest.
Norman Douglas seems like a professor that is genuinely interested in the subject he teaches. His lectures to get a bit boring but he is relaying the material well. His test had the lowest average but was extremely doable if you read the textbook. I thought his exam was much easier than the Genetics portion. Overall, nice professor.
honestly the most boring professor I've ever had
Dr. Douglas was a great BSC2011 prof! A lot of people say he's boring, but he's teaching about plants... Of course it's boring, but he is very knowledgeable and he likes to bring pop culture into his plant stuff. Test very easy. Top hats very easy.
In my opinion, Dr. Douglas's plant unit was the hardest out of the three units. But, smokin notes along with the SI review sessions were very helpful in achieving an A. Everything was mostly memorization instead of concepts. Dr. Douglas was very passionate about the subject, so attending his lecture was pretty interesting.
He's not well practiced when it comes to communicating some very esoteric conceptual ideas and it shows - though he does try hard. The course was at times far too nuanced, with far too many missed opportunities to integrate them in with big picture concepts. Interesting subject bogged down by excessive & uninteresting busy work (labs). Disappointed
Prof. Douglas is very passionate about plants which makes his lectures easy to listen to. I had him for bio 2, so I had him for a relatively short time. He wasn't very clear on what topics would be on the final, so studying was tricky. The best way to study is to take the key concepts from his lecture and use the book to go into depth on those.
HIs lectures have absolutely no organization. He obviously likes plants, but the absence of structure and general boringness made this the worse BSC2011 portion. He also doesn't make it clear what the exam will focus on, so I definitely recommend using smoking notes (old ones work as well) to study for the exam.
Loved his class. Pay attention and you'll do great. I got a 101 on his exam with little effort because of how great he was at explaining concepts. He incorporates many graphics to give you a better understanding of what is going on.
Not a good lecturer. He is very vague and doesn't even seem to know what he is teaching. I had him for the "evolution" portion of the course. Just get smokin notes or study edge and you'll be fine. He does give clicker questions, and they can be pretty difficult.
I didn't really care for his lecture part of the class. He is a tough grader on sentence structure and formatting for a plant biology class but is overall a decent teacher. His powerpoint slides are pretty vague so although attendance is not mandatory and the slides are posted to canvas, going to class is a must to pass the exams.
The lecture part of the class is boring but his slides are vague and don't help much for his exams which have fill in the blank, true/false and short response questions. Tough grader and this class requires more effort than it's worth.
He isn't clear on what he's going to test on, and when you ask him he gets very rude and gives vague, passive-aggressive responses. Evolution is normally the easiest portion of BSC2010, as it should be, but because he's bad at writing questions and makes them unnecessarily overcomplicated, it was the hardest out of the 3 exams.
Had him for the evolution section of Bio 1. Usually evolution is the easiest section but with Douglas as your professor.. good luck. His exam was definitely the hardest out of all 3 so make sure you study tons. He also loves to write novels as questions making you more stressed out about having time to finish.
Hardest exam of the 3, would definitely take a different semester if possible. Evolution is supposed to be the easiest of the exams but this was by far very DIFFICULT. Study hard but honestly the PowerPoints did not help at all. Good luck is all I can say! Do not think that your grade will stay up before this exam. My grade dropped drastically
If you can avoid getting him as a professor, I would highly advise. His exam made me feel like I learned absolutely nothing in the course yet I studied for a week. Studying the powerpoints, tophats, and even office hours did not help me on the exam. His lengthy questions left me stressed and he even put questions on the exam that he never taught.
THE hardest of the 3 professors. The exam was very unclear, seemed as if it was deliberately created to be confusing and make you second guess yourself. Exam questions were very long and eat up your time just trying to find the actual question being asked. His lectures DO NOT help and he is not very willing to provide clarification on the material
Honestly made Evolution (AN EASY TOPIC) so much harder than it should be. Lectures did not help at all, tophat questions were hard and confusing. Exam was difficult and not clear, literally 5 sentences to ask one question which takes up so much time to read. Just an awful experience. Does not seem to care about students' grades
His test questions are ambiguously written and he tries very hard to make the questions tricky. I appreciate his desire to test the actual concepts in the course material (evolution) but he is bad at making questions and bad at explaining them. Pay attention to the lectures and make sure that you study for his exam bc it is the toughest of the 3.
It was very clear that he was not interested in the subject he was teaching (evolution). He made this subject very confusing (statistics heavy). His clicker and exam questions were very poorly written and vague. Only he understands what he's saying. He was definitely the worst out of the 3 professors for the course.
Although his exam wasn't easy, his lectures and clicker questions were very helpful when studying for the exam. He was always willing to help in office hours and was very patient answering all of my questions. His exam was the only A I received and I highly recommend utilizing office hours to get a feel for what he's going to put on the exam.
Lectures are fairly optional, looking over the powerpoints is more than enough. The important thing is going to the lab, because attendance counts and you go over some of the course material in a non-lecture approach. Dr. Douglas is a cool guy and he gives good lectures, even if they do go in-depth on some stuff that won't show up on test.
I found Dr. Douglas' teaching method to be very relaxed and informative. Everything we talked about was seen in the exam and none of the exams seemed unfairly written or tricky. He admitted he had help writing the animal exam as that isnt his specialty, but even then, it wasn't too difficult.
Professor Douglas was a pretty good lecturer in my opinion. He taught the plants unit and so naturally that unit can be boring to most people so I thought lectures were dry. There is a lot of info to cover for this unit so start ahead of time. Test was not too bad and if you do his practice exam it is a good review. Get smokin notes if u can.
Great professor, gives good lectures & a bit of points for "class participation" aka show up for class and do a easy worksheet, but those aren't shown on the schedule. You have to show up to lab to pass, but lots of fun and not hard at all. The only negative thing I have to say is he takes a while to grade things.
This is a very easy class. The professor is kind of boring and obsessed with plants but the class was easy, and I never stressed over it so I can't complain too much. The lectures were boring though. The tests were decent. If you know the learning objectives then the tests weren't that bad.
Really easy class, Professor Douglas is nice and chill.. As long as you show up for lectures and pay attention, you are golden. Lectures can be kinda boring but he makes the info simple and fun to learn about. Do the book work, they are easy points! Had 4 fairly easy exams, with the lowest dropped.
The worst prof I've ever had in UF. Class is suck but mandatory. The only way to get attendence poionts is doing all practice questions correctly during the class. Lecture is confuse, teaching quality is poor, but the way of grading is incredible and harsh. Too much hw, but hw have nothing to do with your tests.
for someone who passed all the bio classes i have taken (honors and AP), i can say this course was terrible. no matter how hard you try, it is difficult to succeed in this class because douglas makes tests that are near-impossible to pass. my best exam score was a b- and that was with endless studying. so glad this semester is over
I really enjoyed his lectures and found him very easy to follow, even though I have had a very bad track record with science courses in the past. He lets you drop your lowest exam score or lets you skip out on taking the last exam of the semester, which was nice. Exams are decent, especially if you do the learning objectives and go to reviews.
I loved prof Douglas. His lectures were never overwhelming, class wasn't too fast paced, and there isn't too much homework. The only thing I would suggest is to study the textbook IN ADDITION to the lecture material for his exams. He will ask specific questions that sometimes wan't emphasized in lecture. Other than that, a good experience!
Honestly wasn't as bad as I expected it to be. He's a fair lecturer and wants the best for his students. The TAs for this class really pull through so going to their exam reviews will help you pass. Sometimes he gives extra credit opportunities for his exam as well.
This class compared to most science classes is a VERY EASY A. The only hard part about this class is the 3 tests, which sadly are 72% of your grade. Participation is 14% of your grade. To get an A, you don't need to read the textbook, but really just memorize his lectures/go to the TA's review sessions (the TA's are what makes his class so great).
I loved having Douglas. I had already taken the plant section of bio 2 but had to drop it earlier, and this guy made it seem so much easier than before. His lectures are really easy to follow, and if you draw out some of the major processes that he teaches then you are sure to pass. Got a 90 on his exam, versus a 66 from the semester I dropped.
This class was quite honestly a waste of time- the lectures offered minimal insight into quiz/exam material- the only real use I got was from the textbook which explained concepts and definitions better. Online labs were outdated and feedback was always vague and unhelpful, not to mention too late to matter.
Since Bio 2 is a pretty generic class, there wasn't much he could do that outshined the other professors but I really liked his lectures and thought they were super informative. Best lectures out of the 3 profs by far. Gave us real world experience with plant identification for LCs that made the material sink in better.
I had a hybrid- prerecordered lectures but lab in person. Dr Douglas seems cool, kinda rambly with lectures. I kinda learned more in the lab than from him. You don't *have* to read the textbook- but it would definitely help if you did. The exams are SO HARD- it is unnecessary. You think you know the material well and studied til you fail the exams
Decent. Lectures can be a bit boring but hes very passionate about plants and knows his stuff. Exam was very fair.
One of the best professors at UF. Everything he tests you on, he either covers in his lectures or he assigns videos to watch and the information is covered in there. I never once read the textbook and I still got an A in the class. He's passionate about plants and it shows. I learned so many random cool facts that you can't find anywhere else.
Douglas was great! He didnt give us a practice exam for the plants section because he told us that we would be fine if we studied every SLO, and he was completely honest about that. The plant exam is probably the easiest and most straightforward tests that Ive taken in college, but you definitely have to read/watch lectures to succeed! He is gr8!
Professor Douglas makes sure that you are well prepared for his exam and explains the topics well. His exam covers content only mentioned in lectures, which is extremely helpful, and if you watch lectures, fill out the SLO's and take good notes you should be more than fine. Smokin Notes helped to clarify some topics but are not necessary to do well
If you like plants, Douglas is not too bad. I found the lectures to be convoluted. Smokin Notes helped me prepare more for the exam than any other material that was provided.
Definitely the longest lectures in the BSC2011 semester. I did exactly what he and the TA said and wrote out answers to all of the learning objectives - still, the exam threw me for a loop. A lot of questions were related to random facts he only briefly brought up, not the actual content. However, he was nice and always ready to help if you ask.
Dr. Douglas is a great person. He makes a subject that is probably boring to most people (plant biology) into something really interesting and fun to learn about. His exam wasn't too bad, and most of his assignments were easy As.
Dr. Douglas was nice but was not the most interesting lecturer. His portion of BSC2011 was the hardest and is exam was very tough. His portion of the class requires a lot of studying and thorough notes in lecture.
I enjoyed having Dr. Douglas as a professor. He made the material as interesting as he could, and his exam was difficult but not excessively hard.
I took him in the spring online. Plants aren't exactly my thing, but I got a C on his exam with the curve. His exam will probably set the mood for the rest of the course. He answers any plant-related questions that aren't even part of the course, which is sometimes interesting. I kind of fell asleep while watching the pre-recorded lectures.
He gave plenty of practice questions using the learning catalytic and his office hours are really helpful because he will go back and explain everything in detail. He is really passionate about plants and the lectures are little boring, but not confusing. I would definitely take another class taught by him.
His portion of the class was not too difficult but was very boring. I found myself having little to no motivation to listen to the lectures. Smokin notes was very helpful to cram and do practice questions.
Dr. Douglas was kind and passionate, but I found this exam to be more difficult than the other BSC2011 exams following it. Maybe it is just because the material for plants didn't interest me, but I also felt like his exam required heavier application of concepts compared to the other exams. He is caring and addresses student concerns quickly.
had us take an exam the monday after halloween. halloween was on sunday.
Had us take an in-person exam at 10:40 AM the Monday morning after Halloween. The exam was on 14 lectures that were each 30 slides long. He gave 0 practice problems or review problems and did not help with any review at all. Every single student walked into that exam without knowing what a single question would look like.
He is very passionate about the study of evolution. His lectures are pretty concise, but to understand the module topics, you need to supplement it with the textbook or the extra content provided. Grading was not consistent, and they haven't graded any assignments or discussions for almost two months. This course will need your full attention.
Do not take evolution from Dr. Douglass. Its November the Withdrawal date is in 3 days and over half our assignments are not graded. He constantly makes excuses and then grades harshly. Many students dont even know if they are going to pass are not
Dr. Douglas was EXTREMELY out of touch and used pre-recorded lectures with minimal content. He did not respond to emails - it honestly felt like he was absent from the course. We did not receive any grades for 2 months, and I don't know my grade going into the final. Very disappointing, don't take this class.
I never usually leave feedback, but this professor is awful. We just had the final for this course today and he hasn't graded anything in almost 3 months. Whenever we try to reach out to him, he never responds and if he does it will be a one-word response or an excuse. Do not take this course. Everything is graded harshly and he gives NO feedback.
Dr. Douglas relies on outdated, unenjoyable lectures, the interactive textbook translates whatever language he's speaking in that monotone voice into English. If you HAVE to take his class, the quizzes are very representative of the type of questions he's going to ask on the exam, but he gives out few questions that you can use to study.
Just took him for BSC2011 in the summer for in person. I didn't think that he could have been worse than any of the BSC2010 lecturers but he was. He spent more time passing around sticks he found outside of the classroom instead of teaching what was going to be on the test. Plants is supposed to be an easy subject, but the average was literally 64%
Rarely responded to all questions about labs throughout the semester and grading was not complete until the end of the semester so I never got any feedback. You learn from pre-recorded lectures and it kind of feels like you go through the class alone. Tests were difficult and I don't feel like I learned a lot. Wouldn't recommend.
Dr. Douglas could be a bit bland at times. His lecture style is white background PowerPoints and a monotone voice. No textbook and pretty in-depth tests. Labs make up a big part of the grade, but they were fun (making soap & candles, using natural dyes, etc). The positives slightly outweigh the negatives. Best science option for non-STEM majors.
Had him for Plants in Human Affairs, nice guy and passionate about what he teaches. However, lectures can get a bit boring and tests are extremely difficult. Class is mostly graded on the labs and tests are not common, so studying for the exams is important. You can get away with skipping lectures since he posts the material online anyway.
During the class of 01/11/21 he is the number of times he said uh* in one period: llllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll (220 times) *this includes all variations of uh
Dr. Douglas's material wasn't my favorite, but he was passionate about it and conveyed it in an interesting way. He asks many conceptual questions, so it's not just memorization, but the learning catalytics help a lot. Overall good professor and cares about his students' success.
I had Dr. Douglas for the plant section of Bio 2. You really have to pay attention to lectures as this is what's on the exam. I recommend smoking notes for this class. There were only a few assignments due each week and he offered extra credit.
Put the most random, irrelevant, complex questions on the exams. Gave no practice exam and asked fun facts he mentioned once in class on the exam.
Mediocre teaching style that's disconnected from student needs. Exam questions are unnecessarily difficult, technical, and without a useful practice exam. Poor communicator of material in a way that makes it digestible. He is knowledgeable and could have a great class if he understood that BSC2011 is a requirement. We don't care about plants, man.
He is very passionate about plants and loves what he does, he even brings plants into class. Unless you are super into botany, a lot of the content is new. Very vocab heavy with having to know characteristics of each clade of plants. The test was decently hard because fo the minute details he focused on.
Douglas is pretty cool. He loves plants so much which is great if you love plants also which I do. I liked the class and I loved his lectures.
I would not suggest this professor to anyone unless you KNOW plants. This was my first exposure to plants and he made it so difficult to understand. He doesn't lecture very well, so you have to self study. Exam was SUPER specific on lectures and what he says in class. Do not suggest at all and don't even bother going to class!
He was really nice and passionate, he tried to make himself available, but there was much content and detail oriented it was just hard to know what to ask. He taught the plants section and it was super content and vocab heavy. I usually do pretty well on exams, but there was no practice exam provided and it was difficult to know what to expect..
he didnt have any resources available. no practice exam. made the exam borderline impossible. acted like we have all been studying plants our entire lives. dude was just so hard for no reason and i wasnt a fan of his lectures. he was very nice but i wouldnt take him again.
He loves his nomenclature and scientific names for plants which makes it very hard to learn and maintain. The best advice is to ensure you're actually learning and maintaining the information and it's not going in one ear and out the other, as well as getting smokin' notes for at least his portion of Bio2.
Boring lecturer if this is your first exposure to plants. His slides are very bare and usually only contain pictures so it is hard to study for the exam. I got smokin notes only for his section of bio 2 and still did not do very well on his exam because some concepts and questions were obscure and hard to grasp.
Just very boring. As if plants biology wasn't hard and boring enough, Dr. Douglas just made things much more boring. Overall, great guy, and maybe if I paid more attention, I would have done fine, but I just wanted to sleep upon hearing his voice. Probably should have recorded his lecture, it might have helped with falling asleep at night.
Dr. Douglas is a good lecturer, but often times they might seem a little disorganized or hard to pin point important information for the test. He teaches the plants section, which for most is the most difficult to learn. He doesn't believe in practice questions because he says we only study them and not the content. Overall, it was alright!
Like everyone says, this is the hardest unit in the biology sequence for no reason. Douglas is painfully disorganized in lectures, and he gives absolutely zero helpful resources for the exam (which, as someone who is bad at math, was harder than my calc final). I hope he isn't the instructor in future semesters for others' sake.
Professor Douglas teaches the easiest of bio 2. However, Professor Douglas made the course surprisingly difficult. Despite the material being straightforward, the exams were disproportionately hard. The average score for our first exam was a D, which is 20 points lower than my organic chemistry exam average.
The way he teaches is really easy to understand, the lectures aren't too heavy and he makes them really interesting, my favorite class by far, please take him he is an amazing professor
Only two exams in the whole class, and the questions are extremely specific, making it hard to score high. He never responds to emails and is hard to get ahold of to ask questions if it is not in class. No guidance given for what to study on exams, except for the objectives each module. The labs are extremely fun, but he made the class hard.
This professor is passionate about what he teaches about. Try to stay awake in class because his voice makes it easy to doze off to. The labs in this class felt tedious, and I did not enjoy them. Then again, I'm not a Biology-related major, so it makes sense. Also, use Quizlet and flashcards!! Tests require you to memorize a lot
Dr. Douglas was always in a good mood when teaching, and while the class wasn't riveting to me(he taught the plants unit), he is passionate about his work and so the class was more engaging. Just make sure to read the textbook though since Achieve quizzes on things from there. Attendance is counted thru iClicker, and midterm is weighted heavy (22%)
Exam was challenging but reflective of lecture. True that lectures were sometimes difficult to follow, but the claims that exams are random or unfair are misleading. Exam wasn't on fun facts but was very specific. Smokinotes very helpful, which confirms that the professor went over all tested material in class. Pay attention to every detail.
The professor was nice and very knowledgeable about his subject; Failed to elaborate on basic concepts but gave detailed explanations about the concepts. If you manage the put the pieces together, you're doing better. Smokin' Notes is really helpful, and the test is basically just memorization
Douglas is definitely passionate about plants. The IClicker was helpful in studying for the exam. Smokin' Notes also helped save a lot of time studying.
Very boring lecturer but overall not a bad class. His iClicker questions were easy and he gave plenty of time and explanation for people to figure it out. I would recommend Smokin notes for his test but overall not a bad teacher.
Took BOT2800c and Plant Tax with him in the same semester. Got an A- in both of them. He has very deep knowledge in his respective field, but as 2000s, the classes were ridiculously hard. Exams were on very obscure topics, and I had a breakdown studying. I barely got an A- and I literally holed up in my room for 2 weeks to study. I don't recommend.
Very passionate dude. He loves plants, like REALLY loves plants. Unintentionally hilarious.
The course material was interesting and I often enjoyed myself in the labs. But, it is ridiculously hard. The tests asked for you to correctly answer extremely minute biological details that did not correspond with any of the expectations for the exam. If it wasn't so hard, I would have liked this class a lot more than I did.
People aren't lying when they say this guy loves his plants, but his enthusiasm was nice to see. It's a pretty difficult unit, so I'd recommend going to office hours or buying smoking notes just for his section. No study guide is provided for the exam, which makes studying stressful, but the test wasn't as bad as I thought it'd be.
For me, Douglas was an average professor. He was the 2nd best professor out of Longo and Dutton and very passionate about plants. His content is hard and the average was the lowest but there was a curve. A mini study guide was given out on iclicker but smokin notes may be useful.
OK prof, lectures sometimes feel like rambles. Course goes off-sync from syllabus so attend class. Exam is tricky and requires a lot of memorization in a topic that's not intuitive (plants). Never been to OHs but seemed approachable in class.
He was an average professor, probably with a not so interesting class. Smokin Notes deifnitely helped, but is not necessary. He also gave a nice curve on the test with some study resources. Overall, not a bad professor, but not the best.
His section was plants, and terminology/vocab was so important for this section! The subject matter was, unfortunately, sort of boring, and the exam had a C average, but he did give us a small curve. He says "um" a lot, which made it hard for me to focus during lecture; he was kind of disorganized, and his lecture slides didn't have a lot of info.
This is a combined lecture & lab course, so lab attendance was mandatory but lecture attendance was not. Prof. Douglas is very knowledgeable (as were the TAs!), and the lectures were always enjoyable, but there was a lot of information to know for exams (both lab and lecture exams). The lab is very hands on -- easily my favorite lab at UF.
He did his best to make the Plants unit relevant and understandable, and his exam was pretty fair. The lectures are enjoyable, you won't fall asleep in them, and most of the difficulty just stems from the fact that plant biology is a bit counterintuitive compared to most of what you've learned beforehand.
One thing I like about this professor is how his lectures slides were structured and how he adequately answered questions we had in class. If you are taking this class I'd recommend going every day and staying on top of your notes. Smokin'Notes was very helpful with helping me understand concepts and know what to study.
He kind of just rambled during lecture and was not very clear. He is passionate about what he does but I did not think he was a good lecturer. He provided little practice material.
Majority of the exam questions are a paragraph long which is annoying for the time limit. Labs are somewhat difficult but graded fairly. You have the same group members all semester. The adaptive quizzes you can do as early as you want as long as you get them done before their specific due dates. The professor is nice.
