Sucks all the life out of the material!
boring, opinionated, difficult. I would avoid his class!
Terrible teacher, unfair grader, boring, doesn't know how to teach. My worst class here!
We should have more professor like him, always willing to help out
No Comments
MAKES CLASS SOO MUCH HARDER THAN THEY HAVE TO BE
test is 70% lecture, 30% book. wouldnt reccomend unless u can make it to class everyday and take good notes. very boring also
good teacher
This was the worst class that I took here at Stony Brook in terms of difficulty. Even if you try you have a large chance of failing because professor Goodman makes the class so much harder then they have to be. He is boring, don't take his class!
My advice is don't take his class! he's boring and can mess up you GPA! He'd do us all a big favor by retiring?

I had him for social psychology and for his relationship class. What you here about Norm for being a tough grader is true. HOWEVER, HE FLAT OUT TELLS YOU WHAT IS GOING TO BE ON THE TEST. Half of you grade is going to come from essays on the exam. You will get a choice of what essays you can use 3 of which he wil have told you about in advance. So long as you talk to him, he knows your are there working and generally just try...you will be fine.

I seemed to understand his notes and required reading yet did horribly on tests. In fact half the class failed every exam. Tests are much too hard. Waste of time, even if you try you'll barely make it.
if ur late and u sit in the front, he'll stop the lecture and harass u about it in front of the whole class. his tests are freaking hard, and the only good thing is that he gives you a choice of essay questions to study from, and he picks 3 of them. and, if you go to his office hours, 4get about it. he brushes you off, like ur wasting his time
his questions r diffrent from his lectures
horrible class..so boring could be interesting if it were a different teacher..he should retire
Boring class. Boring professor. The subject seems so interesting but it's not. I donno if it was jus the prof. I don't think it was though because we had a sub for like 2 weeks and she was pretty bad as well. Thankfully you don't have to attend class, however, a lot of his q's on the exams are from class and you wont find it in the book. Take notes
just picture your grandfather teaching you about intimate relationships - exactly.. tests are ridiculously hard and dont have anything to do with the material - skip this one
I hated this guy. He was a harsh grader and his multiple choice questions were unfair. He also doesn't use blackboard at all.
this guy ****ing sucks hes a horrible teacher do not take this classss he is so rude and cant hear but expects you to hear him and gets pissed when you ask him to repeat himself if your late dont even bother going hell flip out and ask to see you after class his TAs dont do anything expect pretend to his student hes no help what so ever 3 test and
It helps that he tells you in advance what the essay choices will possibly be...but I found that most of the time he had his TA's do all of his gradeing, and they were very unfair with the gradeing, and I would have to go and see him to have my grades re-evaluated and adjusted.
I did most of the readings, went to class and almost lost my hand from writing all the notes he gives. And i nearly failed his class. And to add to it, his lectures aren't that clear. And the textbooks don't help much either. Tests were EXTREMELY HARD and material is boring. He made it so much harder than it needed to be. Don't take this class.
norm is wonderful. crystal clear and mirth-inducing.
This class is not really a walk in the park. You have to constantly read the textbook closely or you'll find yourself getting B's or C's. I had to study for about 10 hours just to get an A+. If you're truly interested in this type of stuff, take the class. Otherwise, you'll end up grieving it!!
Please if you can avoid from taking his class do it. I am telling you in advance. His test are HARD!!!, and he is extremely boring.....barely passed hi class. Your Warned, don't take him.
he can be a little boring but I thought the material was reasonably interesting. there is an easy one page paper and then 3 non-cumulative exams. he wants extremely detailed information for the essay part of the tests.
Professor Goodman is the worse teacher ever...im barely passing his class bc all he gives are 3 very hard tests 1/2 multiple choice 1/2 essay...and a stupid 1 pg paper...hes inconsiderate, mean, boring and very rude during office hours. ive never failed a class in my life and i think this is going to be the first. avoid him at all costs please!!!!!
He's a pretty good professor. Only complaint is that he spits out information faster then you can write it down sometimes and only writes down a few headlines of things he talks about. His tests are mostly based on his lectures so go to class. and if you miss class, definently get the notes, you'll need them.
DECIEVING!! at first, goodman seems like he is going to be the greatest...after the second week, he makes class a living hell. the topic is interesting, but he speaks way too fast, and his tests are near impossible. multiple choice is HARD and he grades the essays UNFAIRLY. his tests do get easier, but he is a ridiculous man. avoid him
Good guy, but speaks very fast and doesn't post on BlackbBoard. Interesting subject, but difficult class. I studied hard, but got 80's on the mult. choice. Gives out essay ques.'s before, so you can prepare. ATTEND LECTURE and READ THE TEXT! Study from your notes as well! And sit close. Really really close.
I thought he was a great professor, he may speak fast but will repeat what he said if asked, essays aren't that hard if you just memorize the material and put it into sentence form. The TA did grade my final essay unfairly though, i missed one part out of the five and got a C!
I loved Norman Goodman, he is a great professor, he has a great grading policy and knows what he is talking about. If you want an enthusiastic professor, he is the one!
I didn't really enjoy his class. You have to come because he doesn't post notes anywhere. He's a little weird and thinks he's really cool when he's not. His tests are kinda hard and it includes a short essay question on every one. Little textbook use though.
He is VERY hard of hearing! If you talk to him during class he will ask you to repeat yourself about 3 times. And you MUST raise your hand or he'll remind you to and it's annoying!
I enjoyed his class a lot, he gives everyday examples and doesn't make things too boring. You should attend the lectures and read the book (most questions are from the lecture though). He's really nice and if you put some effort in you will get a good grade. Very fair!
He taught intimate relationship that i thought would be an awesome + interesting class but BOY WAS I WRONG. He's very boring. The class is okay but...i thought it would be a lot better.
I really enjoyed the material and professor for this class. Sometimes he doesn't speak loud enough and he can't hear well but he's very nice and tries to make it entertaining. I highly suggest going to class because the exams are mostly based on the notes. Over all I really liked this class and professor!
he's a wonderful prof. who makes the class interesting ~~~the class and tests are pretty fair if you go to class EVERYDAY and take good notes(try to write down most of the things he says cuz they might be on the tests) I juz go to class everyday and study the notes I wrote and aced the tests got an A at the end~~
thought this class would be interesting and was the exact opposite. you can't understand him when you're there and he goes so fast and writes on te board so small, (you need to sit in the front to grasp ANYTHING) and then on the tests expects you to remember everything he sped through in great detail. would never recommend this professor
Wanted more detail of things on the test than he explained in class. Even if you go to every class it was not complete enough information for you to do well.
Professor Goodman knows his stuff and explains it well. He gave a review sheet for each exam, which was helpful. However, he puts too much emphasis on exams (95% of our grade) and is somewhat tough with the grading. Take his class only if you need to.
Way too much work for a 200 level soc course.
He is a very good professor, but he does speak on the quiet side and writes on the smaller side, so sit towards the front if you can. i enjoy his class very much!
HE IS THE BEST. I learned so much from this class. Im majoring in Soc because of him. He is quiet and doesn't use blackboard but pay attention and you will learn a ton. Fair grader on essays and assignments. He is very intelligent and one of the best i've had!
Very difficult to hear him during lectures, as well as seeing what he writes on the board. Goes very fast through lecture, so you will miss a lot of notes if you do not attend regularly. Textbook is important because some of the exam questions come from it. Otherwise, the exam consists of mostly notes. Interesting class, so I enjoy the lectures.
I liked him. He knows what he's talking about. If you think it's going to be easy because there is little written homework, you're wrong. You have to pay attention and actually work hard.
This class is intense. If you aren't prepared to go to every class and take notes verbatim from what he says, don't take the class. His exams are equally as challenging. Make sure you spit every detail back to him in his essay questions or you will get a C. If you don't go to class, you will fail. Period. He changes his dates with a weeks notice
I asked for help and he did not have anytime for me. its sad because I was attentive.I felt pushed away. :(
Goodman is a great professor in presenting information to the class, and it being clear. However, his exams are hard (especially the essays). You must copy and study the notes verbatim from his lectures. I truly recommend taking this class if you need to. This is not an easy 200 course.
This class is not an easy 200 level course. You will do more studying for this class than any of or as much as your 300 level course work. The grading in this course is extremely HARD and you will not pass unless you recite his notes on the test essays verbatim from what he teaches in class. Also MC ques are not easy.Don't take cunless you need to!
Incredibly hard class. If you take notes, listen to lectures, and memorize concepts and studies verbatim, you will be ok. You need to be in lecture to take notes for his essays in the exams. There is no book. He says not to write too much in the essay, but thats a lie. Write everything remotely relevant to what he asks. Not an easy A at all
Sweetest little old man. If you have a friend who took this course and saved their tests, TAKE THIS CLASS. Automatic A. He doesn't change the tests and even uses the same essay questions.
He's a very sweet professor~ He has been teaching the class for years, so his notes are the same. Attendance isn't mandatory, but there are no lectures online. His tests aren't hard, just tricky. You will rely on his lectures more than the book. This class isn't for slackers and is a challenge, but you'll do well if you take good notes and study.
He's certainly a nice professor who knows what he's talking about, but sadly this class was not for me. He rarely utilized the textbook. In order to do well on his essays you must write every minute detail relevant to the topic. Basically, spit everything he says back to him. He does not use powerpoints which I found inconvenient. Hard class.
Although Professor Goodman is a very sweet and kind man, his tests are extremely tricky! I went to EVERY class and still didnt do well at all on the multiple choice because he gives answers like: " A.) x B).y C). z D.) y & z E.) none--> overall it is just very tricky you need to make sure you write everything he says in class. EVERY WORD!
This is a very hard class for a 200 level course. If you miss a single class, you will be far behind and will need to make sure you get notes from another student. 50 tricky MC question plus a blue book paper for each test. Not a easy class, you will have to work EXTREMELY hard. Be prepared.
hard to pass
If I hadn't learned most of the material from previous classes, I probably wouldn't do well. lectures are boring and the only way to get material is writing what he says. the class is a bit of a challenge but nothing insane considering its upper division.
DO NOT TAKE HIM UNLESS YOURE WILLING TO p/nc.
intimate relationships is a boring class as it is.. since it seems like common sense. he makes the classes boring because he stands there and mumbles the entire lecture. i found the tests easy, however essays are graded hard, make sure you know what you're talking about. if you can manage to stay awake in his class and take good notes youll be fine
I do think this class was a lot of work for a 200 level class, but you can get a good grade if you work really hard. If you miss one class you will fall behind tremendously. Even with his microphone at the highest volume, it's hard to hear him. Just pay attention, write really detailed notes, study, and you can get an A or B.
I am impressed with how well Professor Goodman knows what he is teaching. However, his class is very difficult. 90% of his test are from lecture. His lecture is mostly verbal and you have to get down everything he says and spit those words back to him on the essay. Essays are graded too harshly. MC tests are tricky. I do not recommend this class.
BE PREPARED TO TAKE A BUNCH OF NOTES! This class is NOT easy and taking it as a freshman was NOT a good idea. There is a lot of reading (at the end of the semester you read around 8 chapters in 1 month and then your final is on those 8 chapters and counts as 50% of your grade. Essays are grading harshly and multiple choice is on the reading.
The essays are graded ridiculously. If you do not put virtually all your notes into them and memorize them beforehand, don't be surprised if you get a C or D on them. Also, read the textbook or you're screwed for the multiple choice part of the exams.
Harsh grader. Make sure you go to class and take notes otherwise you wont pass. Hes boring when he speaks and doesnt take attendence but definitely go. Try your hardest to get down what he says.
Horrible. After reading these comments I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt. After taking the first test, his mult choice was verbatim to lecture with a few from the readings. He gives an essay question..I was under the impression I did well, I put everything in my essay that he said in the notes and I got a D. Drop.
Being a psych major and soc minor the material from this class is really interesting-I just suggest taking it with a diff. professor. So much material it's almost unfair. For tests, the multi. choice is straight forward, however the essays are graded VERY harshly and unfair. I also suggest recording his lectures just in case you miss things he says
I went to class every day, took detailed notes, prepared essays for the exams, and made study guides and still had to GNPC this class. He was unhelpful and unrealistic when it came to exam expectations. If you GNPC than I would recommend the class, it's not impossible to pass but you have to work for a C. He was disrespectful when challenged.
Prof. Goodman is an sweatheart. Yeah what everyone else is saying about the test being hard is right but that's only if you don't put the effort in to study. I recommend going to his office hours or his TA's office before the test if your unsure about somethig. Willing to help in class. Took it as a freshman got a B overall. Take good notes!
Goodman was my favorite professor I took last semester. His lectures are long but informative. You need to show up and write down every word he says - but it's not bad at all. He makes the info fun and interesting to learn. Tests are multiple choice and one essay. Gives you 5 topics, you need to know 3, one of your 3 will be on the test. Not bad.
His class is so straightforward and easy. Three exams (one is 15 %, 30%, final is 50%) and made up of 45 easy multiple choice questions and an essay. Everything he lectures on is all you need to know for exams plus minor textbook reading, barely opened the book. Gives you essay questions to prepare a head of time. Put in effort, you will do fine:)
During the semester, he decided to give us both exams a week early. DO NOT BELIEVE THE DATES HE WRITES ON HIS SYLLABUS. He is an extremely hard essay grader and the exams are half multiple choice and half essay. Although, he gives you a few topics to study from, he expects very detailed essays.
great lecturer, sit in the front he is very quiet & writes on a chalkboard which is hard to see. tests are hard (gives options such as all of the above, none of the above, 2 but not 3,etc)grades essays VERY HARD, have to be pretty much verbatim to his notes to get an A. (i did-not easy). He also lost my test and then blamed me.
Be a great note taker and share notes. Sit in the front and bring a laptop. Make sure you can write an essay clear and concisely. The exams are half multiple choice and half essay. Although, he gives you a few topics to study from, he expects very detailed essays. Practice all the essay questions because you will see them in the multiple choice.
If you want to pass this class, take it with another professor. Goodman speeds through lecture slides and then makes his exams THREE WEEKS EARLIER than listed in his syllabus. He is unreasonable with students and is not helpful at all. You really need to show up to class and read WAY AHEAD if you want any hope of passing. Avoid at all costs!!!!
Terrible professor, absolutely rudest person I've ever met. Man needs lessons in dealing with people.
Professor Goodman is completely out of touch. He simply does not know how to conduct the course. He is rude when challenged, and offers very little help or guidance throughout the course. The exams (there are three) are incredibly difficult, especially the essay. The course could have been interesting had he not been the professor.
One group project where you choose a celebrity and write a presentation on their identity with another person in the class. Must talk during discussion about other celebrities and other presentations. Easy
Everyone here likes to complain about how he grades his exam essay sections so strictly. However, they neglect to mention that HE WILL GIVE YOU FIVE POSSIBLE PROMPTS A WEEK IN ADVANCE. And only three will be shown on the exam, and you only have to answer one. Take the week to write an outline for three questions and you'll do great. Overhated.
make outlines for all 5 essay prompts instead of just 3, you will basically have studied for the entire test. I got an A+ on the essay portion of my tests on every one in 204. Don't know what his 380 class is like but his 204 one is an easy A, and I'm a freshman (not an Asian either, so that's not an excuse). Also if he's going too fast speak up.
When I took this course he required 3 textbooks. Textbooks are expensive and not necessary for this class. You have to read it plus readings on reserve because he asks specific questions about them on the tests. They usually will say "according to this reading in your text..." He also gives multiple choice questions plus an essay for every test.
Lecture goes by quickly with detailed slides but does not go back when missed or post them. Nice although his lectures are not the best...
I went to get an essay question clarified because I had a poor grade and he was very quick with me. He was able to clarify what the problem was but left snippy comments, such as "what the." I would have preferred constructive criticism instead of insults. He can be very unrelateable and not understanding.
This class can be really difficult if you don't show up, take bad notes, and/or don't prepare for the essay questions beforehand. The final counts for 50% of your grade which sucks but it's non-cumulative. As long as your interested in the class and what you're learning you'll do fine. He's a really good professor.
SUCH A TOUGH GRADER. no extra credit. Grade is based off only the tests. Does horrible test reviews. wish we had more outside of class time reviews, about specific questions on the test. Stay away from his courses. Ive taken so many sociology courses and always received at least an A-. But this course I failed.
The only advice I can give is to really go in on your essays. He wants you to answer questions he didn't even ask but are just within the umbrella of the topic you're writing about. Be extremely detail heavy and you'll pass. Multiple choice is ridiculously easy.
RUDE man who does not like to be asked questions. He goes too quick and grades unfairly. For this class you have to take notes/record the lecture. Only good thing is he gives the essay questions a week in advance but even so they require so much work- to pass make sure you know everything on the essays you are writing on! Don't recommend
He's very judgmental, harsh grader, expects you to memorize about 5 pages of information without changing wording. Study a lot.. you can learn a lot from him because he's very smart, if you have the time.
Very kmowledgeable professor, make sure you take good notes. Be sure to write in very specific detail on the essays, or you wont get a good grade. Multiple choice questions are just memorization.
Goodman is so passionate about what he teaches, he reminds of a little grandpa; oh so wise. Show up to class, take good notes (sit closer to the front), study the essay questions (given a week in advance) and you'll pass. Don't know why there are so many complaints in regards to his grading... you reap what you sow
The tests he gives are not fair. He expects you to memorize every single detail in writing the essay for the tests, if you miss one detail you get a bad grade. I am an A/B student and right now I have a D in this class because of his ridicuolous grading. Oh and the final is about 50% of the final grade which is ridiculous. Stay away!
he is passionate and very knowledgeable in what he teaches. Great guy. In order to pass you must go to class and take hefty notes because he does not post his slides online. Tests are straightforward if you study for them.
Just like any other class if you didn't show up, you were only hurting yourself. The only problem is, I went to every class and sat directly in front of him in the first row and it didn't make a difference. The multiple choice portion of his tests were pretty straight to the point, but it was almost impossible to do to get his essays right.
Im an A/B student and I left this class with a C. Your entire grade comes from the exams that he only gives you an hour and ten mins to complete with 55 multiple choice & 5-page essay (provides 5 Qs one week prior and you have to pick 3 to memorize perfectly). Doesnt provide a rubric and his expectations are unclear & unreasonable, stay away!
He is a very knowledgeable professor but in teaching a course about relationships in 2018 I feel it is the professors duty to teach more than hetero normative relationships. He did not respect the accommodations DSS sent him for myself and refused to slow down during lecture no matter how many students asked.
His tests are impossible. He gives 3 test, 40 multiple choice and an essay. He gives 5 essay questions a week before the test but he only chooses 3 for the test. He's a HARSH grader when it comes to the essays. I would never take him again. I usually get A's and B's but i have a C in the course. Save your GPA and don't take him.
No clear grading criteria. After half of the class failed the first exam he had a grad student do a follow up lecture with us in which he just told us to study more.
His lessons are impossible to sit through. They're incredibly dull and yes he gives you the essay test questions in advance but there is like 5 diff parts to each question and If you don't answer every single part or if you're off by one detail you will not get a good essay grade. I'm also an A/B student and I had to GPNC this course to save my GPA
He is god awful. He is so boring, his lectures are so boring its insane. You need to go to class because he does not put anything (i mean nothing) on blackboard. His test are impossible hes such a harsh grader for no reason. He speaks so quietly too
He does not take attendance but you will miss a lot if you don't go. Also he does not grade clearly. It was honestly awful.
Professor Goodman is extremely lecture heavy, and although he gave the essay questions ahead of time it is very unclear as to what he is expecting from the actually written paper. This class was overwhelmingly difficult and it didn't need to be.
Took this class for my major. He was a very good professor. Lecture heavy but the lectures and his teaching methods are very engaging. Some difficulty communicating but not an issue as the TA was accessible. My favourite professor in my freshman year and would take this class again.
By far my worst class ever. 45 question test and an essay in an hour to be completed. Essay is pretty much class notes thats pages long. Not enough time. Way too hard. Hardest professor here at SBU. Not clear on grading. Failed both the first tests.
He has a very old-school teaching style. The actual information that he teaches is not too tough if you are into sociology but his tests are extremely detail-oriented and he expects you to memorize everything for the essay questions. If you don't answer the essay question exactly how he wants it, he fails you basically. I will never take him again.
His lectures are confusing. He doesn't take questions. He has difficulty hearing and talking for extended periods of time which hurt the learning process. Office hours are useless, he doesn't help, just says "get a study group". His exams are confusing and the essay portions are unfairly graded. Unless you're a psych/soc major avoid him!
Professor Goodman is elder, so when participating in class, yell at him! His tests are based off of lectures, class discussions, and textbook readings. Hes a tough grader when it comes to the essay portion of the exams. He also flies through the lecture slides. So, make sure you write down the gist of the topic.
The course is very interesting but there is a lack of current data. He also speaks only about heteronormative relationships and he doesn't answer questions. He expects way too much from students who must complete 45 m.c q's and then write a superb essay in just an hour and 15 mins with no clear grading criteria. not worth your time!
He cannot hear well which does create a barrier with the students and is hard to understand Essay questions are ridiculously convoluted and the fact that you have a 45 multiple choice question section for the exams and an essay that he dissects leaving little commentary behind is a double edged sword.. But maybe he wasn't my cup of tea
His classes are doable if know what you're getting into. I didn't realize what a tough grader he is until I got Ds on my first 2 tests. However, for the final I pulled it together and I was able to get a B in the class. You'll do fine if you read the textbook and pay attention to detail. He does get an attitude but overall he's not a bad guy
Although he gives you the 5 essay topics in advance he is a very harsh grader on the actual test. Study long and hard and remember ALL of the specifics. I did enjoy his lecture though, found them to be very interesting.
Terrible prof and class! I had to drop it because it wasn't worth the stress. Don't take this professor!
Professor Goodman is an amazing prof! Anyone who complains about his class clearly just didn't put the work in. He gives the exact essay questions a week before the exam. Doesn't take attendance but slides aren't posted on BB so if you miss class you won't know the material. Interesting topic and overall sweet prof who is passionate about topic!
he's the best, he gives you outlines of the notes so you can print it and use it for class. Attendance not mandatory but he says a lot of important information in class and its actually very interesting and its not a lot and in the start of class he reviews what we want over the class before. He also gives the essay prompts a week before test.
The ONLY format in which lecture content was available was as pre-recorded zoom lectures. Just lecture footage. No uploaded notes. The PowerPoints were in the video, nowhere else. There are three tests, worth 15, 35, and 50% of your entire grade respectively. Worst of all, he took down the lecture videos at 11:59pm the night before the final.
I'm not sure if it's because the Professor was not familiar with online learning, but the format was this class was by far the WORST. Like stated in another comment, your grade is based off three tests, with the first, second, and last being worth 15%, 30%, and 50% respectively. Tests always had errors and the final seemed to have lots of errors.
This class was so difficult for no reason simply due to the format. The exams are on 100+ prerecorded lecture slides that cant be accessed unless you watch the lecture. There was a lot of textbook reading and it felt like i was just teaching myself the information. The content is dry imo and i would recommend a diff course.
I took his class during covid while it was online, and I was truly not a fan. He grades you on 3 tests (the first one worth 15%, second worth 35%, and third worth 50%) which I believe is not a good grading policy. You could be getting A level grades on the first two, but do not so well and the last and it'll bring you down. He doesn't post notes.
Honestly, I'd rather read the textbook then listen to this man talk about sex. All of the data given was from at least 10 years old. Soc of intimate relationships sounds great, and the general information was great, but overall I don't think it was worth it cause the data was so old.
Really hard to communicate with, really seems to not care about students, grade is based off of 3 tests only. recorded lectures really difficult to follow.
By no means is this an easy A. Goodman overwhelms you with info and readings. If you're not afraid to put in the work and be dedicated then the class won't be a problem. Not impossible to do well, but its not easy
Only assignments the entire semester were 3 tests. Can watch the lectures whenever you want, a decent amount of reading but not overwhelming. Usually curves the test by a point or two. If youre interested in the material should be a smooth ride
He is very stubborn about giving extra credit. He doesn't care about your mental health and on top of that claims to show proof. As for the class material, it's interesting but it's hard to remember all of it because it is a lot of reading, and He doesn't have homework or quizzes.
Grade depends upon 3 tests. First is worth 15%, second is 35% and the last is 50%. This class caused me major anxiety and I'm just happy I passed.
Yeah unless you MUST take this class, avoid it. He reads off of slides that barely have anything to do with what you are reading or they barely scratch the surface of the reading. You have chapters upon chapters of reading and are expected to basically remember it all and you are not allowed to use any notes. Grade was based on 3 tests. AVOID
Don't take this class unless you have to it's been years since I took this class and I'm still mad (2018)
