He's the best, I love him. He doesn't care about anything!
He embarrassed me in front of all my friends:(
he speaks in puzzles, very unclear in his lesson plans
condecending
Very motivated Prof
he is the worst monster on 2 legs and loves to see kids fail
he explains so fast!
He's as interactive as watching TV and he humiliates students that ask questions
you better know your calculus before you do his courses, cuz he can't help you..
Class bites......
HE LOVES TO *FAIL* PEOPLE, DON'T TAKE HIS COURSES!!

Bad Prof...
He needs to take a calculus course!!! Doesnt know what he is talking about.

take his course if you have $500 to spare cause you're gonna end up dropping it

He is a fine professor, his students hate him since they know nothing about math

Don't you need a PhD to teach?? He sucks.
He truly sucks as a teacher. Self-study if you want to pass his courses.

EXTREMELY hard professor, but teaches well
So Funny, funny
check his webpage for final grades, so many E & F, is he "easy"? don't think
Very hard to follow in class...
don't ask him questions
surprisingly got a B with a failed test (4x%) and not good exam. huhah!
teaches only using letters, no numbers, willing to help with grades, got an A
Doesn't know how to teach, didn't know anything about the text, POOR extra help
If Hitler taught Math I think his name would be Puritzky. Horrible teacher, RUN

You never understood the difficulty of calculus until you've sat in this class.
This man ruins lives. Sure he knows math, but the tests are simply terrible.
now i understand why 82 is a+ instead of a. u learn things by losing mark
Great prof, if you ask him, he'll help you a lot
His marking scheme is awesome :D But he sucks at teaching >:(
nice guy, but quite possibly the worst i've ever had.
Worst prof I've EVER had
Confuses himself all the time... which then confuses the HECK out of the class... just go to the other prof's class unless you're comfortable getting your lessons from the text book.
Horrible Horrible teacher NO Lesson PLAN Nothing!! Confuses eveyone by confusing himself!! Stay far and far away, I will never take his course again!
One of the worst professors I've ever had. Made learning difficult. It would have been easier paying for the text book and writing the exam!
I wish luck to the person who thinks of taking this class. This guy cant teach for the life of him. His tests are brutal. Whatever you do stay away from him.
Though I recognize that he MAY know what he is talking about, he does a terrible job of conveying this to the class. His tests are brutal and horribly unfair. If you take calc 1505 with him, expect to teach yourself.
He Likes to see us suffer. A class average of 50% makes him think that the tests are too easy.
Great prof!!!! People who don't like him probably need remedial courses in math. his lectures are brilliant, never boring, and he is very friendly.
never arrived on time, didn't let you use ANY calculators for tests, & made an 8:30AM class more unbearable than necessary!

He is not too bad i think..Honestly, he doesn't know how to teach. But ,if you get the pastpapers, you may get a good mark.
he doesn't teach at all, he doesnt solve anything or answer many queestions, but all he does is prove things...but on the other hand, his tests have been easy, and to be honest, much easier than Kochman's
He is the absolute worst professor of all time. He should be fired immediately. Unfortunately, he and kochman are the only teachers for some math courses, and it's a toss-up between who's worse.

I took math for non-math majors. Test averages were 40-45%. As people dropped out they got harder as "only the smart people were left" and he wanted to keep averages down. I started with a class of 200 and end with 13 people. 13 PEOPLE!!
All good professors need not be good teachers. His notes would confuse you further. He makes even simple things look difficult. The class which was full intially had half the capacity at the end of the semester. His tests are however not too dificult.
who is hiring these teachers? Does York care who's teaching their courses? They may as well have hired a monkey to teach this course...Purzitsky is really that bad.
This man is totally incompetent in teaching. I could see that he got slightly frustrated everytime he tried to explain the material. I'm lucky to have survived his class because of his easy tests and final. Overall, he sucks and whoever hired him is an idiot.
This prof is an awesome person. I like him a lot. He's funny and makes the class enjoyable, even though he cant really teach. But if you study the notes and work on them its gonna start making sense. Relatively easy tests and great personality. Should work on getting his lectures accross.
what is wrong with this guy? does he care if we learn anything or not? i guess we are all supposed to get last years exams study them, ignore his notes not do his homework (which by the way is the most useless list in the world)and pass. Mulivariable calculus? more like multi variable memorization.

Sooooo freakin hard. Extremely hard marker. Avoid at all costs, spend an extra year at university if u have to.
Purzitsky is a tough prof, but he is equally fair in the way he runs his courses. You will need to put a lot of work into this course, but if you keep up and ask for help when you're confused, you'll be just fine. All in all, an interesting course for those who like math.
This Purzitsky man ended up with one student in his Real Analysis Class MATH 4010.06 in one semester in 1988.
AVOID!!!!! Rude and very confusing lecturer. Tests are overall difficult. Not helpful at all. Overall bad prof. HAlF the class dropped out. If you need to take a class with him, miss the first test. He tries to weed out students with diffcult first test.
He is a great teacher. No unexpected things on tests. If he says that there are going to be proofs, there will be proofs. The only thing, left for you, is to sit and learn them. I am not saying it is easy, but if you know how to prove 2+2=4, then you can prove 2+3=5. He tries to interact with the class so we won't fall asleep during lectures.
Oh man RUN AWAY!!! He actually told us that he expected there to be 20 students at the end of the semester. We ended with 22. He said he'd have to make the course harder next time. Did I mention we started with a class of 156 and this is a course for non-math majors? Seriosuly, the guy is freaking insane. Whatever you do, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!
He's a bad teacher and could easily make his notes more organized, but he probably realizes this and makes up for it with very easy tests (everything he says that will be on it will be on it). Just study lecture notes and hope you have a strong high school background and you'll do good.
Does not explain anything! And when I asked him to explain he was mean to me. He did not give enought examples. His tests were hard. I am so glad I am done with that course!
Excellent professor with strong teaching skills. All you need is just good background from school. He assumes that a student knows a lot of stuff he teaching. His notes are terrible and messy. Never write down anything on his lectues, just read the textbook. Our class was 120 we ended with like 35 ppl in the class. Overall class is easy.

Do NOT take this course with him.
You need to understand his messy notes, otherwise the text book does not help you with his tests and final exam.
He seens like a nice man, but personality wise....and his teaching skills are terrible! I used to love calculus, alway got high marks in school...with him i barely passed/ Ill have to take the course again....but not with him thats for sure!
The guy's smart, but he can't teach. Doesn't follow the textbook, and provides horrible notes. Tests are difficult. Avoid him at all costs.
I don't know why he evaded the course that prof burns was supposed to teach if burns did not go on a long vacation. He is a rubbish porf I ever had, so if you are struggling, just drop the course he's teaching, because he won't be going easy on you.
He is not that bad! If you have trouble understanding his writing, you just have to ask and he will verify it. His tests are difficult but, his notes are the key to studying for tests and exams.
I wont state my opinion I will just say the most relevant things. 1)Lectures are very fast and logical explanations of concepts are unclear (cryptic notes) 2)Does not follow text at all 3)Tests from his and text's material 4)Present for O/H but is not of much help(very stubborn) 5)Tests are easy (85 possible), exam is hard (failure is possible)
Never take a course with him! If you are good in math, you'll get a low score with him - I had an A average and I am a pure math major, I know how to study - but I got a C! He will laugh at you in class when you ask questions instead of answering them, mainly cuz he doesn't know the answer, and his his lecture notes are horrible. Doesn't follow boo
Rude and incompetent. Often ****.
Notes are absolutely horrible. It is impossible to take good notes because he does not know what he is doing always erasing and making mistakes so proofs make no sense and are not finished. Tests are not that hard but only if you can memorize the whole entire notes. This class is not to learn something but to pass by memorizing.
Attend as many lectures as you possibly can. Memorize proofs (cuz u might spend a decade trying to understand), review examples from the notes. Do not waste too much time using textbook, he himself says it is the worse txtbook ever. He'll ask to memorize definitions
This is the only proffessor I will complain about. Its been since 1999, since I've been in his class and being a teacher myself now, I am convinced this teacher should not be allowed near the students. He was self-absorbed and never made anything clear. The text book he used was not suitable and therefore I was lost in his class.
Worst professor I've ever had! He told us he didn't even look at the textbook. Gave people 0 on a test question because they used the method in the textbook instead of his! Class average was 45%. Spends more time making fun of students than teaching. Avoid if at all possible!
THE WORST PROF! drop the course if there's no other instructor
If you get this prof, SWITCH IMMEDIATELY!He spends 3/4 of the class making jokes about students, and rushing through entire equations in the last few minutes without explaining or fully completing them. His writing is illegible, making note-taking even harder. He does know his stuff, but he has no concept of communication or teaching. Terrible.
really nice guy..the reason he cannot teach is because he is too intelligent to be teaching such low level mathematics. but hes a very nice guy.
Amazing professor. Amazing method of teaching. Others complain about him making jokes in the class... well what else is he supposed to do?! He is making the course fun! He is very approachable and as for his handwriting it is clear and you can always copy the notes after class. 10/10
THE WORST MATH TEACHER/PROF EVER. You sit in his classes, you will have the same feeling that you will get when you open up a random page of a quantum physics book which you don't have any knowledge on. He speaks his own out-of-earth language! His writings are completely unreadable. I was lucky enough to switch my section before too late!
I am in his class right now. School year 09/10. Hes teaching Calculs for Bio and Medicine. WORST TEACHER EVER. His handwriting is not readable, his notes are useless and he wears the same shirt to class everyday. His needs to be fired. Honestly, IAlready suck at math, and hes making it that much harder.
hes not that bad of a guy, he is not rude to people all of you are so god damn sensitive thank god im not the prof if you think he's being rude with those jokes then jeez. You guys are ridiculous just shutup and do your work and he's not evil. Tests are manageable just relax.
he is the reason why im considering dropping calc this year. speaking of studying and doing the work, me and my friend did all the questions in the book and looked at all the notes. we even did last year's quizzes but we got around 15 questions to do only in 50 mins and there was not one single person who came out happy. big suck up this guy below.
too overqualified to be teaching this course. people who do not excel at math will be unable to understand his terminology. he makes things much more complicated than they need to be; i learned more math from sparknotes than class, BUT he doesn't follow the textbook; tests on lectures so if you don't go to class then you're likely to fail. AVOID.
The course is called "Math for non-math majors". It started out with maybe 200 people and by the end was down to 50. He said that he wanted the class average to be 50% so he kept having to make the tests harder as the "stupid people dropped out". He thinks he's teach some 4th math course but he's just a 1st year prof for non-majors. AVOID!!!!!
This professor is the best professor i had in my first year, He made the class fun. I recommend you sit at he front if your in his class, you really get to interact with him. I thought he was going to be a bad professor but he is actually a really good professor. You just have to give him a chance. I had a great time in his class. Good PROFF
This MAN is not a teacher b/c he does not teach rather jeeber jabs most of the time, gets people confused if they were not already, takes their self confidence away and wastes your time plus the money you paid for course. AVOID_AVOID_AVOID!
He is a very nice and smart prof. But one thing that he tends to forget is that majority of people have no good understanding of math. so he tends to move on. but one thing i can reassure u is that if u copy every single examples he writes on the board and study only those examples, u wont even need the text book. I got an A+ with that strategy.
He must think he's teaching some graduate level theoritcal matmathics course. I took a first year math course for non-math majors. He said that he wanted to keep the class average at 50% (for a first year course for non-majors???) we started with about 186 students and ended with 18! If you're stuck with him see the TAs, that's how I passed.
Basically with this guy is u gotta take his notes, do not follow the textbook. So sit at the front of the class so you can see his writing clearly cause his writing sucks. But if you understand and go over the notes he makes in class you will be fine. So this means attend every lecture you can. Just use the txtook for practice, not understanding
Horrible, horrible professor. I took "Math for non-math majors". The prof said his goal was to have a C average for the class. It started out with 180 people and ended with 16! As more people dropped out he said he had to make the tests harder. AVOID
I was in his 1505 math class and i agree with one of the previous comments stated, attend all classes and take HIS notes, do not rely on the textbook too much. his tests are mainly based off of examples he does in class, if you need to use the textbook for clarification do so obviously, otherwise just listen in class. do this and you'll be ok (:
Boring professor. Uses a lot of his own examples in his tests. Not a very hard course if you study all his examples and take his advice. Never opens the textbook. Easy to understand, but sit near the front in order to see what he is writing.
this guy has really unclear writing and you gotta sit in like the first few rows to see it....man his tests are so TF cause little question is worth like 10 marks and he makes the test out of 100 marks and gives only 50 minutes to complete it...its not fair and this guy is so bad at explaining stuff you wont learn anything from him
he doesn't bell curve so don't reply on that... and study off his notes... textbook questions are way too easy to be on his tests. He doesn't care about the class average being low or tries to make the next test easier
horrible! switch out! I dreaded going to this class and as a result skipped most of the year. He is NOT clear AT ALL, teaches as though you already know the material, and his TESTS ARE HARD! more than half the class dropped out
This professor may be a little disorganized, but he is the most helpful professor I've come accross. Yes he may be witty, and may emphasize the stupidity of some questions (when deserved) but what else do you expect? He's very real! Go to class, follow examples and you'll do wonderful. His examples are just as hard as his test questions.
Honestly he may teach a little quickly, but his tests are extremely fair. he does A LOT of questions in class, and the questions he gives on tests are usually not harder, nor different that the examples he writes on the board. that being said, go to EVERY lecture, and do not over rely on the textbook. try to do all the problems he gives in class.
Test questions come from the example, he claims textbook questions are too easy. Horrible at getting his point across. Exam was a nightmare, due to the fact all the questions were unclear. He claims you can finish 90% of his test in 45 mins if you know your stuff, but his tests are long and only gives you 60 mins. Also memorize his proofs.
Dr. Purzitsky is a very knowledgeable professor. He is always willing to help students after class and presents material in an interesting manner. He tries to make the class fun and interactive. If you listen to his advice, do the assigned homework and review the material after every class, you will do extremely well.
I had purzitsky for calc and a lot of people hated him but i thought he was good. the textbook kinda sucks so just make sure you understand the notes he takes in class and you should honestly be good for the test. refer to the textbook if you need to i guess.
hes just terrible, not much else to say, one of the worst at explaining his ideas to students. If you have the chance, pick any other prof
If you did bad in highschool calculus, you won't like this guy. If you did well, meaning more than 80%, the material will seem really easy and you will get your A. Everything on the test will be from problems done in class. Good Luck
He is a smart guy for sure but just too messy for a lecturer. Messy and careless handwriting but very picky on marking. He gave a list of sheet to study. Very honest but no help from him and all those proofs we got were not even in his notes. And we need to memorize them all. Not the greatest experience but is a nice guy in person.
The amount of mistakes he makes in a lecture is rediculous, but he does seen like a nice guy outside of class
ok so why exactly is this prof rated 1.9? This prof was amazing! He does a lot of problems in class, a lot more problems than you need. All the problems on the test will be like the ones he does in class. No tricks or anything. Go to class. Take detailed notes. Review his notes and repeat his problems. Try some problems from the textbook. Easy A!
Notes are messy but his willingness to help makes up for it. He will never flat out give you an answer but he will always be there to give hints and wait until you are ready to write the next step in the proof. Really loves what he does. Good sense of humor.
Made me cry. He singles people out and makes you feel terrible about yourself and makes you doubt any mathlife skills you have.
This guy was so confusing, messy writing (his "h" and "k" look the same), occasionally making mistakes, skips several steps while doing problems cuz he assumes you know what he's talking about. I'd say try to avoid him but from what I've been Told all math 1505 profs are bad Do past tests and pray to do well... or hope for a miracle
An okay teacher. Having taken prior calculus is definitely an asset as he doesn't go into depth for anything. Go to him during his office hours and he's a great help, he will explain everything. Do textbook questions, even ones not assigned (not the bio ones tho) helps prepare for tests. Search past tests and practice on them. Work HardAB+
Try to avoid him. He can't get his ideas across, is a messy lecturer and makes a lot of mistakes. He makes you feel awful with his horrible attitude. If you want to learn something and get a decent grade, by all means avoid this person.
If you got 80 or above in high school, I highly recommend this guy. He does tons of problems in class . Test and exam problems are only from the problems he does in class. He BELL CURVES !!! Tests and exams were easy since there was nothing that we didn't see before. Get past testsexams, do a few textbook problems, take notes. A+
I always loved math, and was a straight A student until I encountered this professor. He was NO help whatsoever, unclear, and had poor grammar. Half of the time I could not understand what he wrote down. To make it worse his tests were brutal, the class was always at a failing average. Avoid him for your sake and your GPA.
Never worked so hard for a D in all my days.
This prof deserves much more credit. If you understand calculus and functions and did well in high school calculus, you will do amazing with him. He gives lots of practice problems which are the only questions to appear on exams. He does move quickly during lecture and has sloppy writing, but has no problem re-explaining concepts when asked.
He's a terrible teacher. His lecture notes are unclear and is especially of no help when you ask him to clarify certain concepts. He is extremely rude and belittles those who answers his questions in class incorrectly. Definitely would stay away from him.
I think he is great. He is very professional and knows his stuff. Lots of negative feedback here but most of them are just people who get a bad grade and love to find someone other than themselves to blame it on. I also find his sort of southern american accent awesome.
Just one pieces advice as a sufferer, - "If you want to pass, please stay away from him." And I mean it.
His lectures are useless. He doesn't know how to explain. He makes the material sound much harder than it is. He doesn't tell which chapter we are in exactly. His TAs don't give partial marks for the work or often don't give enough; however, the only thing good about Purzitsky is that he is a good marker, and that's the only thing good about him.
Prepare to read a lot, practice a lot and get a C+, then cry and cry harder!
Uses the doc-cam and writes illegibly. You need to follow each step carefully, because there is no turning back. He doesn't explain things directly so you need to study on your own to extract the meaning from the examples he does - this actually helps you understand things better because you spend more effort. But still, doesn't feel very caring.
He comes to class late almost 5 to 10 minutes almost everyday, he sounds like he does not care for any living soul and is harsh to student questions and responses. He is seemingly unorganised with his notes and cannot get to the understandable point as he just states proofs with incomprehensible analysis. He is not a very good professor. AVOID HIM!
Comes to class late and usually isnt prepared very well. Notes are hand written and messy most of the time.
Amazing prof. Like a really bitter coffee, he's a bit of an acquired taste
Professor Purzitsky is all over the place during his lectures! He makes everything seem way more complicated than it actually is. His lecture notes are so messy and difficult to read. I learned everything from online videos and help websites, as well as reading the textbook and doing the online assignments.
Although Purzitsky does incorporate a bit of wry humour in his lectures, he is overall a very messy writer and a prof that is all over the place in his work. Extra work online had to be done to understand extra concepts, and "Heaaaalf" the time he would teach redundant concepts which we would hardly ever see again. You'd be better with another prof
1. This guy has serious beef with James Stewart. 2. Strays from both the textbook and his own syllabus. If skipping class to self study, text someone so you study the right material. 3. Tests have high concentration of questions from one section. So if that happens to be your weakest, GL 4. Way too many proofs that never come up again.
His tests are fair. Only asks what the taught in class. However he makes the course look a lot harder than it actually is. His handwriting is sloppy and won't answer your question properly if he thinks its not smart enough. Even makes fun of students. Avoid.
Finds the stweart textbook to easy, so makes up his own questions for test. Super hard.
Avoid if you can. Messy, hard to read writing. Hard tests atrociously graded. Frequent sadistic remarks on how easy the book is and how hard the tests will be. Below average lecturer. Poor course organization. Enjoys picking on students. Test questions are somewhat similar to homework/lectures, if you must take him He is an unpleasant instructor.
Norm is a somewhat different type of professor. He thinks that using strange analogies like the 401 or the 400 will help out with certain related rates questions. He may sometimes ask you to differentiate a question out of nowhere at 3:00 am on Yonge St. There's certain thing that give you no hope that you'll move on from Calc 1 confidently.
He knows math but is rude to students asking questions in class. He will call on students and tease them in front of the entire class for not knowing something, rather than taking the opportunity to teach them. You are better off sticking with the textbook and going to class only to find out what he wants you to memorize will test you on.
Messy when it comes to teaching. He can't even follow along with his own notes that students have to correct him. He expects us to solve integrals easily when he can't teach the class at all. Thinks he is always right and won't admit he's wrong even when he gets caught making mistakes. His teaching style is too old-fashioned loses the whole class.
Messy notes, discourages student achievement, one day he just walks in and says that most of us are not going to pass the course based on our high school. Lectures are required. You must read the textbook if you want some guidance. Often have to correct him on mistakes. Dropped the course, not worth the stress.
Pretty solid prof. His writing is messy but he doesn't get offended if you ask about it. He writes notes on paper at the end, ask to see those if you missed something. Make sure to check his website he doesn't use moodle but he has everything on there. Don't say dumb things or he'll call you out. Puts emphasis on doing homework so make sure you do.
Horrible, he admits to making his tests harder then the other sections. I got an A in 1013 and am struggling to pass this class. Ridiculous, yells at students when they say they dont understand, and refuses to go back and re explain things. Students constantly complaining and he has zero sympathy. Dont like him at all.
Ridiculously hard tests compared to his own notes and the textbook, really doesn't try to guide you in any way.
Hardest class I've ever taken! All the tests had failing averages! Prof didn't explain well and had horrible handwriting so it was always hard to read...
Get ready to read and do lots of homework. Lectures are not that good but you make do with what you get. He has a reputation of being a tough grader (with tough midterms) so you'll probably get at least 2 letter grades higher with another prof. Been a straight A+ student in every other math course ive taken with other profs...
Well if you don't show up to class you will not have an idea about this class! although the prof is a really nice person literally you need further help and the best way is make sure you solve all the homework because that is the type of things that def come on midterms and of course youtubeeeeeeeeeeee will help sooo much.
Lectures - did not write much down. Not precise in spoken part of proofs. Different approach than textbook, so hard to teach yourself. Availability outside of class - approachable and available for extra help Graded by two tests and final exam. Final grades were curved (results were really bad overall).
Norman is a nice guy but a horrible prof, you try or you don't try you still fail lol
AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!! does not care about his students, makes so many mistakes during his lectures. More than half the class fails and he does not bell curve what so ever!!! Do not bother taking a course with this prof, it will save you a lot of stress! His tests use notations that do not follow the textbook and does not give you enough time!!!
Nothing on his tests are taught in class, more than three quarters of the class is failing. Terrible teacher, when doing examples he never completes them. Doesn't care about students. Would not recommend
This is a course that makes you think about your life, this prof just light my world up and makes me realize that how beautiful that math is. First of all you got 6 pages double sided formula to study, second this prof won't ask any question as simple as text book like calculation he wants you to think deep and understand each concept fully.
The WORST prof I EVER had! LEAVE WHILE YOU STILL CAN !! Never clear and seems bored teaching. Doesnt use mic and doesnt have clear writing. Belittles u if u answer wrong and doesnt explain y u r wrong. Doesnt admit to making mistake since he claims hes GOD bc he made the course. Tells class they will fail and doesnt help class avoid failing.
He tells you exactly whats on the tests and it's almost the exact same thing as his notes. The textbook doesn't really matter in this class. Just go to every class and take all notes you can. He's god awful at writing notes out tho. So I guess that's the difficulty. Tips: buy his past tests from club infinity and know all examples from class
This professor absolutely stressed me out and ruined my semester. His lectures are extremely unclear and he insults the textbook used and does not base his tests on it yet the only questions given are in the textbook. My advice in all honestly is to drop the course and try it in another semester, people are lucky to get a D with this guy.
If you come to know that he is teaching a course that you are ought to take, take him. He is clear, concise and respects students, especially those who ask him questions and corrects him. Mr. Norman is so passionate about teaching and ferociously upholds the beliefs and values of education. Why should we have all the fun?
I was mentally crying while writing the exam and while going home. I couldn't sleep few nights after because I was too anxious about how I did on the exam. Do not take his class, but if you can't escape MAKE SURE you know someone in the other class because their prof will email them about stuff like midterms and exams, this one doesn't.
Norman is to teaching what Messi is to football (or soccer ). G.O.A.T.
Norman is not at all a bad teacher. He is wonderfully droll( although some students may find his jokes unappetizing) and possess extraordinary knowledge about many vivid math concepts. But, he is also impudent( for the lack of a better word) to the students who give wrong answers to the questions asked. Like I said, he is a very okay instructor.
greates of al timee
All I can say is that I was stressed to the max in 1505. His lectures and explanations are so unclear and I legit had no idea what was going on. I had to go to another professor lecturing in the same time slot in order to understand the material. Please save yourself and avoid!!
He never used a mike and it was hard to hear from the front row. His explanations were terrible and counterintuitive. The online homework was optional, at least when I took it, but you should do it to make sure you understand what's going on. I made the mistake of not looking up this professor before joining his class. The lectures were absolutely awful. Clarity isn't his strong suit and he never sent out e-mails regarding midterms/ grades. 75% of the class was failing without the bellcurve after by the time the finals came around. Save yourself the anxiety.
I'll admit I was intimidated at first, but once I got to know him better, he was a gentleman with manners. He uses a projector, pen, and paper. His lectures can be confusing and fast, at times. Writing is messy. But he always lets you take pictures at the end. He even lets you take his papers if you are the last one. Very approachable.
if you didn't take calculus in high school, do not take this course at all. Ifyou do take this course, be sure to do very well on the first two test becausee the last 2 tests are very difficult. First test is review from high school which is why i said dont take this course withOUT A CALCULUS background. Makes mistakes when he marks tests.
Norman Purzitsky is a good professor but not good enough.
It's the first math class at York that isn't a complete bird course. You have to actually try to get an alright mark. His lectures are a bit confusing, and you definitely have to put in work outside of class. Follow the textbook questions if you get confused.
Worst teacher/prof I have ever had. Avoid at all costs.
He is a knowledgeable prof but he cannot teach properly. Usually students want things to be explained more but thats not the thing that he would do in his class
In lectures, he does not explain concepts, rushes through them, and does not give any clarity. Also, when someone attempts to answer a q, he insults them if theyre wrong. The tests are based off of webassign and textbook qs. Majority of the class already failed test 1, and it only gets harder.
Hard marking and overall boring class. Limited help and clarifications provided. Notes are handwritten and very difficult to read. Talks way to fast. End class way too early. Overall had a difficult time actually trying to learn. Highly unrecommend.
you will not understand the handwriting and it was really difficult to learn online.
Because we are online, he is making the tests much harder than if this class was given in person. I feel as if he is trying to make us fail rather than pass. When teaching, he teaches himself rather than the students. When asked to re-explain an unclear concept, his explanation is still unclear
This man does not care about you or teaching the material. He is such a terrible professor that it's embarrassing to the university. Do not take this man, he will waste your time and energy, you'll be better off learning through YouTube and Khan academy.
He does not teach his classes this is the worst class I have taken in my whole life. If you get him as your prof try to move sections at all costs.
This prof teaches the lesson quickly, does 1 example, and thinks we're good. He's a hard marker, basically you show up to class, and after 30 minutes of teaching he has an online quiz, where he makes the question, or in some cases, questionS, way harder than the examples he teachers, and you have 5 minutes to complete it. So Tick Tock Tick Tock
WORST PROFESSOR EVER. He called students idiots and says that all the calculus we've ever learned is "fake calculus". His tests were extremely hard and after the 2nd midterm, only 12/125 kids were passing. He used new notation on the tests that he never used in class/in the text so no one knew what any of the questions were asking. HE SUCKS!
Made an account specifically to rate him. Absolutely horrible prof. He is unclear in his lectures, commonly forgets to record them until a student reminds him, is often corrected by students and says he'll "rewrite the notes later", has completely illegible handwriting with no organization or steps to help explain, too many questions on the tests..
not succinct with explanations, easy to lose track, lectures are unclear, many mistakes too. If you have him and can't switch sections, make sure to be very vigilant and attentive to catch mistakes. I've had to re-watch lectures 2 to 3 more times after class to understand what he was trying to say. Be prepared to teach yourself.
Lectures are unclear and handwriting is illegible. Made 50% of each test impossible and unreflective of any homework he assigned. Class average on first test was a 34. His response to this was to make quizzes harder. Does not care for students success and insulted our intelligence at least once every lecture.
Demeaning and inconsiderate to students, insults the class at least once a lecture. First midterm was out of 100 marks but made 50% of it impossible to complete. His lectures are impossible to understand, and finished the course content in 8 weeks with little explanation. He says the textbook is wrong but can be useful to answer first 50% of tests.
Disgrace of a professor. He will not teach you anything, as he probably doesn't even know the content in the first place. Very sloppy handwriting, lots of mistakes, little to no teaching. He is very lazy, he will not provide office hours or a textbook or any help. Avoid him at all costs.
Online quizzes worth 40% of the mark! They are only 5 minutes long. They're supposed to be easy to be our "bell curve". At first, they were, but they are not anymore. They are no longer doable in 5 minutes. Unfair. Wants to bring marks down after they've been too high, even though HE said they were supposed to bell curve! Very stressful situation.
I nearly have panic attacks writing those quizzes! 5 minutes for them is awful. If they're not some careful calculation, they're a definition instead; which you CAN'T FIND ANYWHERE. It's unacceptable that these are worth 40% of my mark. I nearly did better on the midterm. Only 25/30 quizzes are supposed to count, but he should definitely drop more.
The quizzes are stressful. You can't seriously say that they're supposed to be our bell curve. It would be helpful to have complete, organized, legible solutions and notes from him. Uses two textbooks, that are actually not that similar - this can be confusing. The test was almost more fair than the quizzes - although the average was a low 30.
Does easy examples in his lectures, but you ABSOLUTELY can't follow along because his handwriting is horrible. He doesn't explain that well, and makes online quizzes 5 minutes long, and that is 40% of our grade. The tests are impossible to do. He expects 50s from class, not sure why York keeps him on their payroll, as he is making $200,000+ a year.
He does easy examples in the lectures, and then on the test and homework it is next level stuff, that we don't have any idea how to do. So the homework ends up taking hours to finish, and the stuff on the TEST/QUIZZES, is harder than the homework. Can you believe it? You must ask, how can one attain a teaching's license being a teacher like this?
His tests are impossible to complete. He gets pissed when students ask a question about a concept over and over and says "come on guys it's easy stuff". Yeah, it's easy for him who's been teaching math for 100 years, not for students. He said he expects the class to mostly get Ds and Cs. The Average for both Midterms was BOTH LESS THAN 40.
He's teaching a low-difficulty (for a math course), straightforward 2nd year course - but manages to make it complicated & confusing; he confuses HIMSELF. Every lecture I can't believe how unprepared he comes. Stumbles on what he says/proves, but concludes with "this is really important, you guys should learn this". Treats his lectures like a joke.
can't explain anything! all over the place. hard to ask him questions.
No clue what was going on the whole class, he hated the textbook so there was no resource to help understand his messy notes. He couldn't even solve the problems himself...
Going over 2nd test: he says "This problem was really easy", but then it takes him 40 min to finish - had to start over several times. Halfway through solving, he says to himself "What am I doing..". I can't believe I'm paying tuition for THIS. Never hesitates to put us down, always pointing out how unprepared we are, but doesn't even try to teach.
He is awful. His notes are scratch notes, with countless mistakes in them (he says he will fix them but never does) - it is very difficult to understand. He makes his lectures near mandatory because he has a quiz every lecture that accounts for 40%. He tests us on things he can't solve in a reasonable time himself. He complicates the trivial.
He gives pure math questions from 3001 to tests, and those questions usually worth half of the test, so your full grade is 50%! Class mean around 30%, so good luck!
He is the worst prof and won't let you pass. If you are reading this, take a course next sem or next year with an alternate professor because you will just waste your tuition fees taking him.
-Used notation different from either book -Regularly made mistakes in calculations -Complained about lack of rigour in the book but never proved theorems -5 min quizzes every class, worth 40% The hardest part of the quizzes was deciphering which answer matched each letter that matched with what roman numeral which matched with what drop-menu box
if you are reading this DROP HIM IMMEDIATELY. he straight up doesn't care. He will fail you even if you study your butt off. His notes are super messy and hard to read and he makes fun of people when they ask questions. He won't teach you anything. avoid at all costs.
Have myfinal with him tomorrow. I have had ALOT of bad teachers since elementary & high school, but he has been the WORST EVER. His handwriting in notes is worse than my 10 year old little sister. You literally have toteach yourself the entire course!!!5 min quizzes everyday, and even he can't solve them in 5 mins. Avg is 30 in Midterms. Undoable!
The course is doable with a different prof. He makes the course 1000 times unbearable and that's not an exaggeration. His handwriting is difficult to read. Two textbooks were made available and yet not enough. He includes so many proofs in midterms and final that he hardly goes over in class. I think he intentionally wants students to fail.
Unfair grading
This prof cannot explain what he is teaching. His writing is messy.
HORRIBLE professor. I've unfortunately had this guy for 1013 and 1014, and he is literally the worst professor I've had at York so far. His handwriting is completely illegible, he frequently tells students that he thinks they should give up/drop the class, and doesn't provide support outside of a weekly lecture that's only 1/2 hour long. AVOID!!!!!
You're better off learning out of a textbook than listen to his lectures. He doesn't actually teach the material, but instead reads out his math logic to himself as If he's solving the question on his own. Waste of money to attend his lectures, only 15-20 students in a section of 170+ attended his lec. Got an A by listening to other profs lectures.
The worst professor ever.
DO NOT DO IT! He makes so many mistakes during his lecture, which btw, are literally just his already-worked-out problems with his messy handwriting. Kinda makes you feel dumb when you ask questions. The ONLY reason I passed this course with a good grade is cause I attended another profs zoom lectures.
Let me warn everyone that follows in my wake. If you have Norman for any math class, prepare for a professor that offers no homework help and routinely puts students down for asking questions. Most of my time was soentavoiding class because all he does is read off of scribbled notes instead of practicing concepts (The book is your best friend.)
Old school, i hate his class
tests are on material that is not taught, mostly questions we've never seen before
Had to learn everything by myself because i could not understand this man at all
No communication, Class Average grade 15% on the first midterm, Terrible handwriting, No syllabus, No course outline, No office hours, Frequent class cancellation, Does not follow textbook, Good luck.
Didn't a horrible job explaining the lesson and had quizzes every lecture. During our final, he added questions that were very difficult and was outside of what we learned. So many people failed that so he curved the grade. Even if you attend the lectures, he does not do a good job of teaching the lesson, only take if you need a 4Umath course.
It has only been three weeks, but he hasn't been a good professor so far. He teaches the material like we already know it and says that it's a "no brainer", but the way he teaches makes it the complete opposite. Everything's all over the place, no proper technique of teaching and writing his notes, and just solves the problems by himself.
worst teacher I've ever had, no exaggeration.
Horrible professor, he wrote his notes during class by hand, handwriting not understandable at all, incredibly disorganized. The way he explains is like he thinks we already know all the content, not clear at all. Ended up teaching myself the entire course and using notes from friends who had the class with a different professor.
Avoid this professor if you can. He doesn't teach, just does examples on a sheet of paper which sometimes you can't understand due to his handwriting. In addition, his lectures are boring & lack structure. Students become demotivated & end up falling behind. I regret taking the course, it was a waste of time & money & I should have withdrawn sooner
He actively insults students, mocks those with learning disabilities, and brags about failing students. He still uses an ELMO overhead projector, writing all of the lecture material on pieces of paper. At the end of the lecture, he gives everyone about five minutes to take pictures of all of the papers and then takes them to throw away.
Only had this guy for 5 lectures so far but they have all been shocking. Everyone I talk to in this class hates him and for good reason. Terrible handwriting and overcomplicating concepts. Writes on scrap paper that he throws away instead of on whiteboard. Actively makes fun of students who ask questions or get things wrong. Year long course BTW.
Norman Purzitsky makes up nonsensical questions in class that you can't even understand because is writing is so bad, he makes everything sound harder than it actually is, and he forgets the question he is solving WHILE HE IS STILL SOLVING IT. Avoid this prof at all costs, the hardest engineering course is still easier than doing math with him.
I am taking his class this semester. He does not teach good. Don't even tell us assignments according to chapter. Writes on paper with terrible handwriting. He expects us to know everything and explain everything in the harder manner possible.
Don't take a course with him. Don't do it.
Teacher doesn't even do lessons, only takes up examples. Relies on online assignment for teaching. Supposed to prep students for calc, but makes easy concepts 100000000X harder than they are. Spent 30 minutes deriving the quadratic formula (over half of class) to end off with its this formula you dont need to show how you got it. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
THE WORST PROF he just assumes the students know everything, doesn't teach well at all, there is no flow in the class, doesn't use a textbook, won't even reply to your mails. The lyryx assignment that has to be done, half of the questions there aren't even taught in the class. This prof made me hate the subject by the end of the semester.
Would insult students who were struggling, doing well, needed help, needed no help, got good grades, got bad grades, who showed up, who didnt show up. Nothing is ever good enough for this man, and insulted the class at large for getting better grades than he expected. I went to him during office hours for help, and he insulted me again and refused.
VERY HARD CLASS OMG! I don't think I'm pretty stupid but his classes made me feel like so. The tests are insanely hard. "If you don't know this simple thing, you might as well fail the class." I've never met a teacher more uninterested in trying to foster an educative environment for FIRST YEARS than him. If you have a choice, don't take this class
Nie mowie po polsku
The professor is so bad. I used to attend every class since I struggled in maths but he made me hate every single thing in the class. He does not know how to teach. I will say Don't EVER TAKE HIS CLASS! He doesn't even grade the test properly and then doesn't even bother to reply to my emails.
Whatever you do, don't take a class with him!!! This was by far the worst class experience I've ever had. In the very first class he managed to over complicate the lesson. He belittles people's answers and repeats his question because he doesn't like the wording even though it's correct. Every other review on here is 100% accurate. SAVE YOURSELF!
Avoid him, there are better profs out there First day of class called us all idiots. Would berate us for not being able to recognize properties we werent taught Gives online questions worth 10%, half of which arent taught to us The class average was consistently below 50%, and DOESNT CURVE He would consistently just ramble on
Avoid this professor at all costs! He makes even basic concepts seem overly complicated. Unstuckstudy AI and the free textbook are the only way to survive this class.
When i go to his class i come out knowing less than i knew before. Extremely confusing to the point that I come out of the class thinking everything I knew so far was wrong if that makes sense.
Worst professor ever. Rude and unprofessional—denied funeral accommodations. His illegible handwritten notes are useless, he ignores the syllabus, and adds surprise material last-minute. Tests are unfairly weighted. Avoid him at all costs. 40% final two 25% midterms and learnt more from youtube or textbook.
In the first class it self he was solving questions without explaining what he is doing,he expects us to know this stuff magically without teaching anything. On top of that he writes on papers, deciphering his writing itself takes the whole lesson. If you want to enjoy math and actually learn,PLEASE DO NOT TAKE HIM.
His lectures suck. Learnt more from YouTube. Handwriting barely legible. Would Avoid.
no comment
The concepts in the course are not difficult, but the problems to solve can be, and he doesn't focus on that enough. He goes through content very fast and his examples are hard to follow. He's not outright bad or anything, just could be better. I think if you just practice a ton (I didn't) and watch videos and stuff like that, it's not bad at all.
Professor Norman is not a bad teacher. Attendance is MANDATORY. If you miss one class, good luck passing the course. He's not a bad teacher. His lectures are easy, you just have to stay focused. There is a lot of homework. His tests are not hard at all. You just have to study the lectures and assignments.
I have never written a review on here but I had to warn anyone that was planning on taking a course with this professors. Don't ever take this professor for any course, let alone MATH 1510. He won't prepare you for any upcoming Math course. Pick any other section or wait to take this course with any other professor. DON'T TAKE IT WITH HIM!!!
i dont know what to say about this prof other than the class was ok but guy is judgy and i dont know why because there's a lot going on here that we could all judge him on. think maybe he has an issue with something in his personal life.
Nice older gentleman, his teaching was a little unorganized and there were some difficulties with the projector. Going to class is a must because he doesn't post notes but other than that grading was fair and if you understand the concepts you'll do well.
lectures are hard to follow. uses a paper and projector and has issues often. speaks in a confusing way and doesn't seem to care too much about the students.
He knows his stuff, but he can definitely find a better way to explain the concepts. The difficulty comes from the fact that he uses a projector and pen and makes tons of mistakes, he also never post his notes online so if you skip one lecture you are VERY done for. I personally learned more with Youtube than him, so avoid him in general.
He's an older guy, uses a docu cam and writes on paper with a pen. He often makes mistakes in questions and draws over the same questions with a pen, making his notes very hard to read and follow. The only good thing I can say is that his tests are similar to the homework questions, and they are fair.
Norman is an older guy. His lectures are near impossible to follow because his chalkboard writing is messy & his speech is unclear. Most of us end up teaching ourselves. On the bright side, his tests are fair & closely match the homework and textbook.I mostly attend now for entertainment he often gets fired up & argues with students when corrected .
Idk what's up with this prof, but he derives a lot of useless equations and then continues to skip a lot of steps because apparently we're supposed to know how to solve a problem, even before it's been taught. He sort of expects you to know how to do everything on your own. And when you ask questions be prepared to be made fun of
Do yourself a favour, don't take his class. Nobody ever understands what he's doing. Also insults students who ask him questions. Prepare to teach yourself all the course content. On the bright side, his tests are not that hard and are very similar to the assignments and homework. I mainly use YouTube to learn all the content.
i often say prof x is a bad teacher but a good person. this man is the worst teacher and the worst person on this planet. bad handwriting- insults students- his teaching method is so bad u will understand nothing in class- doesnt post his notes - 3 midterms and 5 sets of homework if you choose this prof be prepared to chew the textbook on your own
I couldn't read his writing at all, and his midterms were much harder than those given by other professors teaching the same course. I ended up rescheduling this class to the next term with another professor and earned a solid B+.
worst prof i've ever had would give this guy negative if I could.
