Rough... very very hard
You will definitely have to work if you take him for tax accounting, but he geniunely cares about your performance. Absent minded at times...but c'mon, take a look at his office. All around good guy.
had him for the second half of the semester, it all went down hill from there, hated every minute of his class, don't take this professor
Very hard class, tests are hard, and grades hard. But overall, good prof. I learned a lot.
Very hard! Grades even harder!
Needs to work on his people skills. I would never recommend him to anyone.
Rude, no help. Told me I would not graduate my freshmen year on time and I'd fail out soon. All wrong, out in 4 with a good GPA. No help at all. Looks and acts like Mr. Burns
Auditing. Tough class, heavy workload, face paced at times. EXCELLENT teacher. If doing public accounting, you will learn more form him than any other prof. (maybe tie w/ Wags). Put in a lot of time, but u will get more out than most.
Good guy, looks like Mr. Burns, Makes you take dictated notes word for word, Expects no less thatn 15 hours a week of studying just for his class, but its not necessary, just read the book, take notes and you'll do fine.
Don't take this course unless you don't mind living in your book. However, he is quite fair and as long as you keep pace with him you'll do fine.
grades very hard on papers,he expects alot out of them. He loves to give out reading assingments. As long as you participate, read, and take good notes you should do fine.

easy class as long as you keep up with the work. The whole class is 5 papers. Grades hard because he wants good things from you. Take him and listen, he'll teach you alot
Very Hard but good professor. can be helpful if you can actually catch him in his office.
hard class. but wants everyone to pass. very helpfull. cool guy
worst prof at KU complete jerk expects to much of you think we all want to be accounting majors and that it is the only class we have to worry about. And we should do accounting 24/7. avoid at all costs.
HE LOOKS IDENTICAL TO MR. BURNS ITS SCARY!!! Whole class is 5 papers... which can be hard cuz theres a lot of reading involved. He picks his favorites. He's a nice guy and if you go to him for help or advice he'll steer you right for your paper.
Hes horrible. good luck trying to pass
Hard hard class...expects a lot and this is an entry level course all business majors must pass. REDICULOUS
Well he's a good guy but the whole class is 5 papers. He wants the best from you. The only this really bad is that he says LISTEN TO ME, LISTEN TO ME alot. Even when everyones listening! Oh well it's an easy B.
If you go to class, the class is not to hard. He takes his tests right from sections of the book, so go to his classes and read the book. If you show up for class and take notes the whole time he will like you and treat you with respect, if not drop it
If you want to succeed in the world take his class. He pushes you to your fullest amount if you want it. He has a great business background with many accomplishments. He is very helpful if you seek it. His tests are hard. If you study they are easy.
If your not a accounting major, I wouldnt take him, "You need 20 hours a week to pass my class" -Very Difficult. Good guy, and recently is trying to cover up his MR Burn look-alike appearance
Great professor, if you’re willing to get used to his personality. I scored at the top of my class. However, I’m forewarning those who are reading this looking for the easiest teacher; DON”T TAKE HIM, I give you my assurance, you will fail. If you’re a
I have enjoyed several classes with Professor Sigmond. I wish I could take more. He is one of my favorites. Note to fellow students - diligence is required and rewarded.
Not the easiest teacher, but if you take the notes (which he makes you) do the homework, and then buy the study guide, and study that you should do OK. Def. requires some work...don't take for an easy A. Def. learned a lot, much better than other profs for teaching. BUY THE WORKING PAPERS!!!

Dont get me wrong, he is a great guy, and very interesting to listen too, but his assignments-GOOD LUCK! his papers are way to hard, and i think he might have a dart board in his office because he just throws the same grade of eneryones papers...which is ususally never higher then a B-
he is very nice, don't get me wrong, but his teaching ways are very weird. he makes us gets these books and we barley uses them. i like him at first but then he got very boring. i would never take him again.
it was only a first year class but he was helpful but a hard grader.

nice guy.. but probably the hardest class i have ever taken. haven't learned very much. always trying to guess where the information on tests came from. avoid if possible!
Total Hunk!
booooooooooooo
An intelligent, straight forward description of Professor Sigmond: Received a lot of schooling and has a good sense of the business world so he knows his****. Listen, take good notes in the class, and you'll be rewarded. Challenging but also enjoyable. A harder professor, but motivational. Connects with the class, funny, but diligence is required.
He is a very hard, but he just wants to push his students. You need to go to class and be prepared. If you have a problem, go talk to him. He just wants you to learn the information.
Horrible! He stands and dictates notes to the class and harasses you if he thinks you're not copying what he says word for word. There are no tests, you just have to write intensive summaries of mind-numbing articles from Fortune magazine. This class was half the reason I'm no longer a business major.
weird man. he spends more of the class telling you how you are probably going to fail then he does teaching. tries to be funny but is so lame, i wouldn't reccommend him
The material is difficult, but he explains it very well. He emphasizes things he wants you to know, but also expects you to know the chapters. He is willing to spend time explaining the material to those who don't understand. He is strange, but funny...it keeps you awake. I recommend taking 'Uncle Norm'.
alright i'll agree he knows what he is talking about, but the way he runs class and dictates notes is just terrible. and his tests.... well i never had to write so many essays for accounting before taking his class. i wouldn't reccommend him its just not worth it
He Is the worst teacher every. Dont waist your time taking this class he s*cks. At the start of the class there was like 50 kids. By the time we took the final there was like maybe like 10 kids thats how many droped. he thinks that his class should be a survior show to see who can make it to the end.
I love "Uncle Norm"... yes he is really werid... but he knows what hes teaching and he loves what hes doing... sometimes he can pick on you but he just really wants you to do well in his class.... hes a very passionate teacher...
He really knows what he is talking about and he has an unbelievable knowledge. If you are willing to study hard you will be fine and learn a lot. If you just want to get through accounting better take sb. else.
Had tio drop his class, he goes in his own order and talks like you should know the basic accounting principles. Wagaman or Hiembach are great!!!
Professor Sigmond is terrible. NEVER TAKE HIM FOR ANY CLASS! He didn't show up for any of the appointments he made w/ me. He tells students to wait for him for a half hour, then never comes. He is highly irresponsible, and a bad teacher. His class is way too hard for a freshman seminar class. His term paper is impossible. DONT TAKE HIM! trust me
He really knows what he's talking about, but shouldn't be teaching freshman-level courses. So often, he asked his class to write faster because he "had" to get through the right amount of lecture material that day. I for one can't speed up. Tests are also way too long for the class time.
know everything!
this guy knows his stuff. he is a very difficult teacher, but if you want to learn accounting, and i mean really really learn it. take him. there is a reason why he teaches mostly upper level classes.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS. if there are no other prof's available, wait to take a class if he is the only one teaching it. He is full of himself and thinks he is the greatest thing on the face of the earth. terrible advisor, terrible teacher. likes to call you out and make you look like a fool. if you like to feel stupid, take him.
This man is HORRIBLE. He should not be teaching. First of all, he thinks he's some kind of genius. He expect far too much from his freshman seminar class. He grades unfairly and doesn't even teach on topic. We read a book called "How to read a book" and talked more about that then Business. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Just teach yourself the material and you will be fine. Dont bank on learning the material from him because he tells you, you need to absolutely know everything and then the test comes around and there isnt 1 question or problem about it. he constantly comes into class 5-10 mins late everyday and then rushes through everything bc he's behind.
He's difficult but fair. Always show up for class, always read the material and know the information prior to attending the class. If you put in the time, you should be fine.
Worst professor I ever had. Made appointments yet never showed up or showed up an hour late. Lost my work. I needed clarification on some hard material and he rushed through them when I went to see him - waste of time since he's not interested in after class consultations. He should stop rating himself on this website. Uncle Norm?? Please!!!
Egotistical and Pious. Runs his class like a hysterical tyrant. However, he is quite sharp regarding his knowledge though has a difficult time relating to students. Does a swell job weeding out accounting majors.
Avoid at all costs! He requires you to study 12-15 hours/week MINIMUM (this includes the homework, text reading, flash cards, etc). I am a good student with a GPA above 3 and I'm having a tough time holding a C in his class. He's very knowledgeable about accounting but cannot relate to students, especially those of us with jobs. Very demanding Prof
Well he may be the smartest business professor at KU, but he is not a nice man. 15-20 hrs a week? He doesnt realize we have other classes to study for. His attitude is pompous and he puts you down regardless of whether you are doing well or not. Should you take this class (which I do not recommend at all) you will most likely drop or fail
He is probably one of the most brilliant professors I have ever had and probably will ever have. However, his class is extremely hard! His tests are NEVER consistent and you almost never know what to expect on them. You absolutely NEED to go to class, his notes are great you just really need to be willing to put in the study hours.
Avoid him at all costs. He may know what he is teaching, but he CANNOT communicate it to the class. He claims to teach at Wharton "on the side," but I'm not too sure about that. He changes his requirements for projects and tests on the day that they are due. His e-mails never reach any students, but it's all our fault for not receiving them.
Very tough accounting prof. Preaches how you need to spend 12+ hrs./week on his material for an A/B. Exam weeks I studied all week for 20 hrs+ and I got either a C or B, depending on my final exam score. He says to know one concept inside and out for the exam and then it's not on it. Some exams all MC, some all fin. statements, some both. HARD.
Terrible Professor! Expects waay too much from his students. Don't bother taking notes becuase they wont help you when taking the exam. Exams all way too much material to cover in a 50 minute class. I'm pretty sure he couldn't even finish his own exam in 50 mins. POOR PROFESSOR!!!
Is he arrogant? Yes. Is he kind of a jerk? Yes. Does he grade fair? Well...YES! If you can't keep up, you shouldn't be an accountant. What do you think being in the industry will be like? Grow up, if you can't pass Intermediate 2 you need to reconsider your major.
Hard Class. Teaches material well. Fall behind in time and then it is on you to learn. Breezes over homework. 50min for a test is rough but is a fair grader. He has curved every test by 10 pts given. You do need to keep up with the reading and studying and DO the Homework to reinforce it or you'll fall behind! Dry sense of humor but good teacher!
always late, doesnt reply to emails. When you ask questions he makes you feel stupid. Knows alot of information, and only likes the top 2-3 in every class. Very Rude and cocky, Do not take
If you are accounting major, you already heard his class is extremely tough in various meaning. When you graduate and get accounting (or accounting related) job, you will know he is your accounting guru. I really thank to him a lot. Good luck.
An A is possible!KNOW the HW probs. and Ch. questions/terms. He never responds to emails but he's helpful in class and is an Accounting genius. The course isnt easy, but that's why it's ADVANCED Accounting! If you pay attention and READ the book, you'll do fine. He's not as bad as people make him out to be. The whiners in class were worse than him!
This man is terrible. He does not communicate the material AT ALL. He changes the date of the test and the materials on the test last minute. He is always late but preaches we should ALWAYS be on time. He is the worst motivator. He has to curve EVERY SINGLE test b/c he does a horrible job preparing students for it. He is so unorganized it is sick.
good dude.
I'm run a business and I'm doing my taxes and I have to say, Professor Sigmond taught me A LOT about accounting. It took a while for me to figure out his teaching style, so I didn't do as well as I expected gradewise, but I really did learn managerial accounting. Two Thumbs UP!.
Knows accounting very well. Will help you if you don't understand something. Very approachable outside of class. I had him for summer 1 int acc1. Went thru the material real fast but what do you expect for a summer course. If you can't keep up take it in the fall or spring. I aced every test but I also spent 2 hours each day studying and like he says, " know the concepts." if you don't want to put in that amount of work, you shouldn't major in accounting because you'll never make it.
Has dry humor. Terrible teaching style. Would not recommend to anyone.
Know his stuff very well and makes it very clear about what he expects. Very helpful. Will curve test grades if it benefits most of the class. I'm taking him again for sure.
Awful professor and would not recommend anyone taking him. He expects so much and requires you to read the textbook just about every night if you want to do good on the exams. He acts like his class is the only class you have. You take a ton of notes and most of it is worthless for the exams because he wants you to read the textbook.
he gives notes, which are spoken out loud and u must copy along as he speaks like a mad man, then when u go back to read doesn't seem to make much sense. regardless majority of it probably wont even be on the test, arrogant egotistical, comments on any minor movement in class a little discouraging. Talks to the class like were in 3rd grade.
A lot of people don't really like him that much, but he is not that bad. He is just an old school teacher. But all the notes he gives you is basically all just on the test. So just write down your notes in the book and you'll get an A
Great professor and really knows what he is talking about. He is more then willing to help anyone with anything. Not going to lie, his class isn't the easiest but if you go to class and take notes you will get an A in his class. Ive had him for 2 classes so far and he was great in both classes.
Worst teacher ever. You have to memorize everything both book and lecture notes. expect to wright 6 pages of notes each class. after the 2nd test all his tests are open ended and he doesn't believe in giving full credit for anything. only good thing about his class is that he gives extra credit but that's so you can pass with a c and be happy
This class is very simple if you read the book, but going to class and listening to Dr. Sigmond will just confuse you and leave you with a notebook of useless notes. He is very traditional in the sense that he will yell at you for coming in three minutes late or getting up to throw away a tissue. He comes off very rude and is not easy to talk to.
Good guy, difficult class. I did horrendous on every test I think a c was the best I got. I went to every class, showed I cared, and made a personal attempt to talk to him in his office about tests and how I can do better. He passed me and I respect him for honoring students who put in the effort, but cannot seem to comprehend the course.
Had to take him for a substitute finance course. Awesome guy. You really have to do deep into his lectures. Honestly, the course was more difficult than I expected it to be, but I just adjusted my study time according, and still came away with a very solid A. If you put in the work, you will do well. READ. THE. BOOK.
Prof. Norman is something else. He's pretty old & plays Chuck Berry music videos sometimes. He makes nicknames and calls people out. Tests are basically straight from the book & notes are pointless to study. The tests multiple choice except the final 3 essay questions. Extra credit randomly given for being in class when attendance is low.
Currently at the end of the semester with Professor Sigmond and I was not the biggest fan. Every exam you take in this class is strictly from the book you can literally not come to class and still pass if you do good on the exams. All the notes you take are pointless for the exams. Although this class is great for entrepreneur mindsets
His class can be so boring really pointless but the guy is a genius. If you want to learn the ins and outs of business he is you guy. He comes across a bit arrogant sometimes but you have to play into it, hes funny and really will help you out in office hours he loves when he knows you care.
Prof. Sigmond is, by far, my favorite professor I have ever had. Accounting is very in-depth, so you have to work for it. He is funny and our class definitely pays attention to him. I truly appreciate Prof Sigmond as a teacher, mentor, and inspiring soul. Prof. Sigmond, if you ever read this, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart!
I would never recommend taking this professor for any class, but especially not his introduction to business for non-business majors course. Hes the worst teacher Ive personally ever had!! He didnt allow us to unmute ourselves in zoom, or type in the chat. He said to email him with any questions, but would never answer his email as well.
Took online & literally just talked at us for the entirety of lectures. No PowerPoints, no using D2L. Emails tests to students the day of and is not available during test taking. All assignments are emailed and no rubrics/feedback. Takes forever to grade things & everything is based on the book. His lectures are pointless, went for attendance only
- All you need to do is participate and you'll pass the assignments and exams - You write a lot of notes be ready; he's very technical about notes - Class is very boring
the professor is monotone, and genuinely makes you copy every word, comma, and period that he says out loud. he does not bother making slide shows or putting anything of value on the board in class. he is very intelligent but his teaching style only works for 10-20% of students. One of my personal worst learning experiences within the university.
Dinosaur who needs to retire
Terrible and boring professor. Exams are essay driven and not structured fairly at all. He basically wants you to guess what to study out of the millions of notes he gives, along with the textbook. He does not expect any of us to be accountants, but teaches us like we want to become one. His ways of teaching is prehistoric, and he needs to retire.
I don't think he's a bad or mean person, but I have never had a professor in my life so unnecessarily ruthless with grading. In no world should a test 100% essay based have to be graded as low as a 10% out of 100 unless you either leave it blank or don't answer the question at all. Also I hate how he doesn't even display his notes while teaching.
Very odd. Repeats statements continuously. Not liked by his peers.
He is not a good teacher every test he gives is an essay format that he harshly grades. HE doesn't write notes he just stands at the front of the room and talks. He yells at students, he is not a good advisor at all, I've had to wait 40+ mins to meet with him even though I filled out my appointment form days in advance. Good luck.
His grading is very unfair. Two people will have roughly the same answer on an exam but one will get a lower score. There are no slides for his lectures, he just talks and you have to listen. His lectures are very odd and he repeats things a lot but, it makes to easy to remember things. My biggest regret, not writing down everything he says
Grading is ruthless. He will change the exam material with only a few days' notice. If he decides your answer is not good enough, even if its from the textbook, you are incorrect. Pro tip: all material from the exams comes from the key terms section of the textbook. He definitely knows the material and is knowledgeable, but super unfair gradewise.
Uncle Norm was a great teacher who seemed like a grandpa trying to be funny but failing to do so. Very insistent on using the textbook, but as long as you read the pages he recommends you should do well. Even if you don't passing with an A is still possible.
