He is funny and makes it C look like an easy language
No Comments
Knows material ; knows how to get it across
He makes the most difficult subjects easy to learn. Wish more were like him.
Funny jokes. His exams are all based on his HWs. And he posts all answers to the HWs. One of the best CIS prof. I ever had.
I had him 3 years ago...the nicest professor ever, very easy...he still remembers me :)
Very easy and nice. However if someone is planning to take CIS22 I don't recommend because it's too easy and doesn't fully prepare for the hell of CIS22
Just plain awesome. Knows his stuff, good personality, good comunications, seems to like to teach.
Very clear professor. Gives hard work, but clarity of information supercedes hardness. Very helpful and encouraging.
unclear, hard and tough grader
he is a very clear professor... u can't find anyone who is more clear than him for the classes that he teaches.... if u don't understand him, u should just change ur major.
Very special teacher! I wish this college had more teachers like that. Just awesome teacher. See his name on the schedule go for it. The best teacher I have had. Spectacular experience.
he is good, but not that eazy
clear and helpful ... doesnt make him easy but if u do the work u can expect an A
good ,uneasy, funny
awsome guy, totally hot, oh man i want him. wish i wasn't a guy. :) just teasing. you the man.
Easy and Funny TAKE HIM

Very good and funny teacher. If you're good, he'll give you candy. Really!! And one more thing, READ THE BOOK!!
It is hard *not* to understand anything as he is very clear. Fun, lively and helpful. Read the book, do the HW and have more than 50 IQ to get a good grade. A very good professor.
Excellent professor!
Woww one of the BC finest prof, i even got money from him!!! he is very clear in the class and you will learn a lot , got an A and the stuff that you learn here its really helpful in the other classes!!!
he is the best professor EVER. everyone should take him!!!!
He is completely psycho, i remember him like 6-7 years ago , i took assembler with him. he has no clue what is he doing....
hands down one of the best (not easiest, but best) professors in CIS dept
This was a once a week course, and he gave a quiz and homework nearly every class. He's a very good teacher, although a bit absent minded. Attendance not required, but essential. This was a hard course, but worth the effort. I definitely recommend him.
Intuitive lectures. The text was cryptic and terse but he added umpf to the subject. Great lecturer.
A great person, not a great teacher. Easy yet confusing. Very straight forward with expectations. Easy grader, just a dumb class. But overall a great guy
mixed bag: absent-minded, fuzzy expectations, old-school lectures, quiz every week. final was NOTHING like samples given. But also easy-going, approachable, good s-o-humor, generous grader. better option than other choices (Zachos). very interesting courses for abstract/logical thinkers. a damn nice guy, overall recommended.
Be prepared to read and do assignments every week.Final is accumulated which is a lot. Explain quite fast. Sometime it is hard to follow his explanation. Sitting 3 hours in such theory based class is pretty horrible though.
Nice guy. Get to know him. His test questions are easy and the homework is very fair nothing too hard. Easy grader, but in this class you gotta read most of the chapters. Don;t just rely on class notes. The reading isn't tough anyway.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!!Paradoxes & limits: Interesting stuff, very clear, very easy. If he says you don't have to read it, it means it'll turn up in the extra credit questions. He doesn't take attendance but, go to class, he will appreciate it, he's soooo cool. Also, for this class his "book" is $13.50 from Far better-also lightweight.
AVOID!! What a joke. He teaches it like you are an expert. There is a reason its an intro class. Don't ask him questions, he will belittle you, or just ignore your question. 4HR 3CRED class, but you will need to study a lot and go to tutoring, so make that 10hrs. Hes not helpful and this guy is ALWAYS..ALWAYS late for the class. Thanks for D.
Yanofsky is kind of bitter and a bit misogynistic. He definitely thinks he's funnier than he actually is. He wrote the textbook and pretty much just reads it in class. If you read it too, you'll do fine. Seriously. Tests are straight out of the text.
His upper tier Paraodx course is really easy, to the point you just read the textbook, whihc he wrote, and you should be more than fine. however the class is so enjoybal i still attend. Great guy and course.
Professor Yanofsky is super at teaching this course. He allows for students to understand how vital this is to any professional person. A lot of environment apply algorithms to ensure projects get completed accurately. This is a MUST-TAKE class. He breaks down the complex areas and challenges each person to explore improving one's area of expertise
He is always late and has an excuse for it. He memorizes the book and expects you to memorize it as well. No need to think. Then at the end of the semester, few weeks before the final, assigns couple more chapters. He should not be teaching at this level!
He has change his ways of teaching. He is still funny and has his own textbook. He gives tests with paradoxes, not definitions (the tests are harder). He will not let you keep the tests. He does not curve. Attendance is mandatory since his questions on the test are based on his lecture, not his textbook.
One of the worst Math professors i've had in the cuny system, and i've had professors which english is their third language. He goes straight from the book (which sucks), and stops every 5 minutes during lecture to either let a story or promote his book. When you ask him something, he may or may not answer. Avoid or take class in another school.
Teaches straight from the textbook and the textbook itself isn't very clear or helpful. Bi weekly quizzes which are "alright" but if your struggling with homework then you will probably fail them.
He is a great Professor, I would highly recommend him. He explains very well, and makes the students interested in the class.
He is a great guy. VERY HELPFUL. The class is straightforward, do all your hw and you will get a 'A'. The quizzes and final Qs are the same exact questions from the hw.
A very easy class, and he is very clear.
He is fair and very nice. Good professor and makes the class fun. Too many quizzes and assignment but it keeps you update with the materials. Overall he is an excellent professor to take.
Great professor. Explains the concepts well and always answers questions in person or via email. We had six quizzes which were very fair. Also, he's a generous grader.
It's a tough course with a lot of material to cover, but he reduces the damage by making it interesting with stories and anecdotes, and adapting tests to what is learned or is unable to be learned in class. He's pretty busy, but he does try to help, and is very approachable.
Ok this class is wierd, maybe because I was not expecting to learn what people CANT do. However, this professor makes this course interesting and fun. You will learn a lot of tricks to show off to your friends. 3 exams; tes1, test2 and final. Easy A+
I'm a Grad student One of the best instructors I've had for anything. Able to explain complicated ideas clearly. Attentive to students questions. Respectful. Hilarious. I would not recommend skipping class. Definitely should read the book. Def. do the homework. It's 5% of your grade, but if you don't, passing quizzes/exams will be hard
Great professor and awesome individual.
Amazing experience. I wish he gave more classes.
This is an incredibly difficult course. My advice is to read through the book (which is a difficult, but I do suggest google searching answers to help you through the material & homework). When you see an algorithm, you must trace it to conceptualize it because there's a strong chance it may appear in a quiz or final. I mean it!! Don't memorize!!!!
Amazing teacher. You can tell he really wants the students to learn the subject. Although, you HAVE to read the book and the tests can be a bit difficult.
Very good professor. Knows what he is talking about. But his quizzes can be fairly difficult. DO the HW or you won't pass. Ask questions over and over again until you get the answer you are looking for. He's great.
Do not miss a chance to take professor Yanofsky! He is easily in my top 3 favorite professors. He is not just an excellent & passionate educator, he is a hilarious, genuine & wonderful person as well. I not only learned an incredible amount but laughed my butt off during the semester. It was an honor to have taken his class & I hope you do as well.
Explains every concept thoroughly, welcomes questions, and adds a bit of humor in between. He makes class fun! Class is fast paced, however. As long as you keep on top of the short homework assignments, you won't be lost.
He's a nice guy who knows the material well, but he is not a very good teacher.
Fantastic professor that welcomes questions. Does grade the quizzes a little harsh but gives a huge curve at the end and a 10 point curve on the final.
He is a good prof comparing to others in the dept. He cares about students, and wants us to know the material. If you understand algorithms, you would be fine. My suggestion is to memorize some of them for tests if you have a tendency to stress out on exams. ( Like you know how it works, but just in case...)
The course is different to any other math course I've taken previously which made it kind of difficult. Nothing built off of previous work so every 2 weeks it was like we hit a refresh button on the course. This course had 5 quizzes with the content is similar to the hw but still hard. This is a tough course and I'd choose him for this class.
Class is enjoyable, he makes some good jokes but tests are very tough and sometimes material shows up on exam that wasn't covered. Also, he is a tough grader.
Professor Yanofsky has a way with lectures, they are fun and keeps you engaged with the class. The course material is completely different to the rest of the CS department so it was a brand new experience. The worst thing about the course is that the grading scheme is tough, 4 quizzes each worth 15% and a final worth 40%. All of the exams are tough
Theoretical Comp Sci is HARD no matter who you have, but Yanofsky makes it as painless as possible. He really cares about his students and works hard to make you understand. He is kind and caring and will explain things many times if needed. There is a bi weekly quiz but it helps you learn so you are not cramming for the final. Overall great guy!
I really enjoyed this course, his lectures are both entertaining and informative. The course was graded by 4 quizzes (60%), final (35%), and weekly homework (5%). The quizzes and exams were graded leniently, if you don't know the algorithm by heart, explaining the logic will get you most of credit. You need to read the book and do HW religiously.
Yanofsky is amazing. His lectures are taught in person and are available online to rewatch whenever. Lectures are very enjoyable. Full grade is based on 4 quizzes and 1 final. This class is already difficult, take it with him and it will lighten the stress a bit. Show him you are willing to work and he will meet you halfway. Great class, take him.
Amazing professor and person. Highly recommend taking him, and this class especially. He literally wrote the book for the class so you're getting the knowledge straight from the source. Very interesting topics and he has a passion for teaching it. The class is an easy A as long as you read the few chapters and follow along in class.
The GOAT. One of the best CS professors at BC. Don't pass up the opportunity to take him. You need to read and practice quite a bit for this class, but he does give a few pts extra credit on each quiz and the final which is generous. He's a great teacher and gives you ample opportunity to master the material. Would gladly take his classes again.
One of the best professors in Brooklyn College. Pay attention to the lectures and take notes on the recorded lectures. Practice the examples.
He is one of the few professors that seem to have a passion for teaching, and he's great at it.He makes hard topics seem easy, has great teaching techniques, and tries to make class fun by making weird jokes. Not a hard teacher, as long as you pay attention and understand the hws. Plus all his lectures are online
theoretical class was hard because write proofs for non-practical problems.(Bunch of proofs, including in the final) Most of the concepts are extremely boring and useless for a computer scientists 4 difficult exams and one hard final. professor will not curve the grade if you fail the final, you fail the class No coding problems at all math class
Despite the professor's enthusiasm for the subject, one issue continues to bother me: the finals. The professor merged the final exam with the last quiz, forcing us to take two tests on the same day, including the finals. It was an awful experience, and it's frustrating that schools can be so disorganized.
he is so lovely
Please TAKE Yanofsky if you get the chance for ANY class, thank me later! He is easily the best professor in cs department and arguably in whole BC. He is a BC legend! Funny, caring, and extremely knowledgeable. I passed CISC 3230 theory class that I took with a diff professor, by watching Yanofsky's yt lectures.
Best lecturer in BC. Posts lectures and homework solutions on Youtube. Funny and caring professor but the class is VERY FAST PACED. 4 Quizzes and a final make up your grade. If you practice homework problems, you will have no problem getting an A. However, he does not curve, and one or two bad quiz grades will significantly harm your overall grade.
The class is fast-paced so be prepared to study at your own time for the 4 quizzes. As long as you do good on 2/4 quizzes ur fine in this class, but the only con of professor yanofsky is that he asks for definitions on the quizzes and sometimes he makes some of the stuff harder than it needs to be when in reality it is easier. would take again
Very funny and passionate professor but he makes the quizzes more confusing than what it actually is. Also can be very bias, he has his favorites.
Says its hard to fail his class but he makes it hard for us to pass.
He got jokes, makes class interesting, but is a confusing grader. Will give partial credit when he wants, claims its easy to pass but not really. Not the best at explaining topics.
LMAOOOOOOOOOOO dont listen to these kids who put in these reviews they just tryna cope bc they didnt put in any work. this class is so fair and honestly they gotta cope because he literally curves so much stuff. im sukuna these kids are gojo brah
In a major and in a college where good professors are hard to find, this guy is the holy grail, the godsend. It is HARD to pass if you don't put in any effort. If people are having trouble with this course, consider changing majors. This is a CS course, not a freebie course. Put the effort in.
Took him my last semester at Brooklyn College (non CS major) and he was my favorite professor by far. Extremely clear lectures, and if you miss one you can catch it on youtube. All homework questions and answers are explain on his youtube. If I could've taken him for every class at Brooklyn College I would've.
Prof Yanofsky is a great instructor with the ability to explain difficult concepts in a way that most people can understand. Lectures are also available online. The concepts in this course are still challenging, so don't expect to pass without studying.
As someone who had him this Spring. The course I took was half philosophy and half computer science. I say he's ok in terms of teaching the materials. The lectures were sometimes hands on which were engaging to students. Sometimes he tells anecdotes which also made the lectures interesting. Overall, it was 50/50 the philosophy (ok) but not math.
If you follow through the lectures you will have no problem with the class. People say that he does not curve, but he gives away so much extra credit it is impossible to fail his class. Easy A if you consider you only need a 93/120, I ended up with 113 when i took him. Funny enough you dont get an A+ if you have 98+, you get it if he feels like it.
Funny professor that tries to make lectures not boring and he accommodates to the speed of the students. Graded with 4 quizzes, a final, and HW. Make sure you read the book.
Really good professor and delivers great lectures. All the exams were pretty fair, in my opinion. I wouldn't say he's a harsh grader. Even though his lectures are online, I feel like it's still better to go in person and use those videos as a review for quizzes and the final. The textbook isn't hard to read at all. Funny and class isn't boring
Hard class considering the material, you will need to read the book, watch the recorded lectures on his YouTube channel, and of course do the homework if you want to pass. On the bright side, Professor Yanofsky is a very nice person and is lenient with grading. I recommend that you take him if you can. Good luck guys!
Honestly, bro is a chill professor. It's not that hard to pass his class—just show up, take notes, study, and do the homework. The lectures are interesting and not very boring, but having a background in CS will help after the first third of the class.
His book is full of mistakes and lacks examples. When you ask for more, he tells you to provide them for his book. Topics feel rushed with no examples, and homework is not checked, with no answer sheet. Instead of focusing on computer science, he turns the course into physics and linear algebra, making learning frustrating. Highly recommend!!
The best professor I've ever had! He explains everything so clearly that everyone can follow along. I didn't really need to read the textbook. His jokes are hilarious, and his class felt like a great break after a tough day.
This class is a hard class, Professor Yanofsky provides lectures online but still study for them. He is very funny and enthusiastic about what he teaches.
Inspirational professor. Take him.
Even though his book had a lot of mistakes, and this class was a quite difficult one, he made it not that difficult. Excellent teaching style and clear grading criteria, drops the lowest grade out of quizzes. Would definitely take him again.
