Very easy teacher. She explains everything many times so that everyone can understand it. Slight accent, but it doesn't bother me :)
extremely easy class. teaches so freaking slow, repeats everything, talks to you like youre 10 yrs old, so its SO boring but really easy. quizzes are pretty easy. easy A or B if you study only an hour b4 class. take this class over any other stats class. its the easiest youll get at jmu!!
Very sweet lady, easy class if you put in any effort. Very clear teacher, so if you have any problems understanding math she's definitely the teacher to take. 3 tests, some quizzes and the final, along with a few computer assignments. I would absolutely reccomend her!!!!
What the hell, she is a horrible teacher!I got her for her first semester at JMU and all she does is copy the notes directly from the text onto the board during class and rarely ever goes over any actual problems assigned for homework. Then you realize her tests are numerical problems, not her notes.
oh man! this class was awful. i had heard horror stories about stats. never took it in high school, was kinda nervous. she was super slow at the begining. by the end i was so lost it killed my GPA. i dont recomend her. at all. i think she is crazy. she doesnt speak english either.
She is nice, and her tests aren't that bad. She goes pretty slow, which is nice for a gen-ed stats class. Most test and quiz questions come from the homework, which she goes over in class. The only prob is that she doesn't go over them all, so you might have to go to office hours to get the answers
Terrible experience. Her notes are copied directly from the book and is a picky grader. She takes too many points off of tests for lack of work. Also, she screwed up my final grade and is not working with me to fix it. I am currently dealing with academic affairs to get it corrected. Also, doesn't speak english well
Not a very good professor. She doesn't speak good english which makes understanding the work difficult but she isn't too picky when it comes to grading. she takes attendance and says it will help if your grade is borderline and then claims she never said it. I do not suggest taking her class.
very thoughtful and helpful
Not gonna lie, one of the most boring classes I've ever taken... however, probably one of the easier stat professors, so it's worth it. Come to class, her lectures teach to the tests. Doesn't collect homework. Few assignments, lots of quizzes to pad your grade. Be sure to study anf practice, but put in any sort of effort and you'll pull a A or B.
I hate math and I am usually pretty horrible at it, but I ended up getting an A in her statistics course. If you go to class and attempt to do homework you'll do well.
I hate and am horrible at math but her lecture notes are sooo clear and organized. The example problems she does in class really help when it comes to the homework (which you should do or attempt). Boring, sure a bit, what what math teacher isn't? She's really accessable and ready to help. I highly recommend her if you need to take Statistics.
Classes can be boring at times. About 5 quizzes that are usually pretty easy, and 4 tests that can be hard. Not a lot of homework assignments, but make sure to do them, it will help a lot. Go to class and do the homework and you should do fine. She's very accomodating and from what I understand she's one of the better stats profs so I recommend her
Class is not too bad, but you have to teach yourself. The first 3/4 of the class is easy, but she flies through the last quarter so it is very confusing. 3 tests, 5 quizzes, 3 labs. Attendance is recorded. The mispronounces words which is annoying, and she takes random points off of assignments for no apparent reason.
The class is boring but easy. Her quizzes and test come straight from homework assignments she assigned and examples in class. Just go to class for attendance and go thru all the homework questions and you'll do fine. I'm not good in math and I have a A in her class.
Hard class. She does her best to teach it, but sometimes the class ended up correcting her mistakes which made everything even more confusing. There are computer labs and graded homework. Study for the quizzes and tests, a lot of the info comes from sample or homework problems. If you don't have to take Stat...don't.
Her accent is hard to understand but she knows this. To compensate, she gives you very detailed notes and instructions for activities. The first half of the semester is like 6th grade math and the second half of the semester is more difficult. Not very hard to get an A or B.
Professor Jahan might be the worst teacher I've ever had. I cant understand how any of this is relevant. The beginning is easy but the class quickly escalates into something beyond simple. She doesnt explain anything and expects you to know it. Dont take her!!!
If I hadn't already learned half the material previously, I would have been doomed. Gives exs. but doesn't explain how/why she did them that way and everyone leaves class confused. very boring as well, bring something else to do/get on the comp. or you WILL fall asleep, it happened to lots of people.tests r fair if you know what ure doing
What an awful class. I learned more from the kids sitting in front of me who were retaking the class for a second time. Examples were unclear and often more complicated than necessary. She wasn't very friendly and nitpicks on tests and quizzes. And she assigned a math project...
Never take a class with her! Extremely unclear in her notes and has an extremely hard time answering student questions. Easily the worst professor I have EVER had.
You're going to fall asleep. I did every class even when I wasn't tired. The fist half of the semester was going over bar graphs/six grade math but then you get really lost the second half. Be sure to keep up in the book before you go to class and the lectures will really help. But otherwise it's a really boring class.
pay attention to the problems she does in class, even though it can be hard to stay awake. READ THE BOOK, it makes way more sense than her. 1st half of semester isnt too bad, after that it all goes downhill.
DON'T TAKE HER CLASS as long as you can help it. she relies on her students to teach ourselves and each other and she rarely seems to know what she's talking about. it's almost impossible to stay awake in her class. avoid her at all costs.
Although this class was extremely boring, go. Her notes and the examples she does in class really help. Make sure to ask if you are unsure of something. She asks if anyone has questions and if no one raises their hand then she moves on. If you do need help though she will help you. Compared to the other STAT teachers she is one of the better ones.
the class is really boring however jahan knows her stuff. she sometimes mixes up numbers during examples so pay close attention and dont get confused by her mistakes. her notes and hangouts are very helpful. do lots of practice problems. there are about 6 quizzes, a couple labs, two tests and a final so study for those! dont blow it off.
Dr. Jahan is probably the most confusing professors I've ever had. She is constantly making mistakes which makes it impossible to follow along with that she is doing. Literally my entire class would correct her on simple addition and subtraction and sometimes she even got the equations wrong on formula sheets. My advice would be not to take her.
Professor Jahan is easily the worst teacher I have ever had. She has a pretentious attitude, enjoys putting students on the spot, and confuses even herself during lecture, nevermind the rest of the class. Take statistics with another professor, if not another math class altogether.
i dread going to this class because i learn absolutely nothing. rude when i asked for help, told me to re-read the book. pretty much just use the book to learn. worst class EVER
Easily the worst professor I have had at JMU so far. The only way I was able to get by was through the book as her lectures are confusing and unclear. She gives quizzes and tests and material learned the day before and oftentimes makes mistakes while lectures. Don't take her if you can help it
Get out of here immediately! The entire class is based on going over the homework problems, and because no body does them, its completely pointless. The class isn't horrible because you can do everything yourself and never go, as long as you make the quiz days etc if you put the effort in you will be fine. Waste of time going to class though
AVOID..GET OUT..NOWWW!! I've never really had a problem with math until now. The class is boring and it seems to go on forever and it's just not a good class. Avoid her and you'll thank me.
If I had not taken this class in highschool, I would surely be failing completely. The homework is super easy, but the tests and quizzes are confusing. She also continues to work after the let out time which tends to be irritating. She typically gives us 15 minutes at the end of class to do a quiz because she lectures the first 35 minutes.
I hate this class. DO NOT TAKE IT IF YOU CAN AVOID IT. Professor Jahan moves quickly through material with little help, calls on students randomly to answer homework problems, and if you get it wrong, she makes you feel like an idiot. She spends way too much time on easy material and not enough on difficult material. I can't wait to be done.
A lot of people seem not to like her, but she is better than some stats proffesors. I took stats last semester and hated it. Jahan is a lot better than my other proffesor, and she lets the whole class correct a test or quiz if the whole class does bad on it. She also goes over tests and quizes after we've taken them to help us understand mistakes.
Make sure you really, really pay attention or you will suffer. She often changes numbers in demonstrations, sometimes she confuses population and sample when she's talking (which is SUPER important) and if you don't stay on her throughout the problem she will sometimes go off topic. Make sure you REALLY understand.
VERY HARD. I barely passed this class. She expects you to already know a lot about statistics and makes you feel stupid if you don't. She does not explain hard concepts and it is very difficult to understand her. Do NOT take this class if you don't have to and if you have to, take another professor.
I'm good at math and that be why I thought it was easy. She explained it in ways that I understood. You can tell she doesn't plan too much as a teacher. You normally just go over homework every class, and normally you have no idea what the homework is. I think I would recommend her to science/math majors only
She is very hard to understand. Does not go over anything clearly and assumes you already know everything she goes over. Gives you no time to take your quizzes. Is never prepared for class. I would definitely not recommend her.
I read all the negitive reviews on here and thought Id be fine because I took AP Stat in high school, but i wasn't. Do not take this class. Id only take this class if you like teaching yourself out of the text book. Very scrambled class and very rushed towards the end. Way to confusing.
Get out now! Avoid at all costs! She doesn't explain things at all. Only 20 moinutes for quizes. Going to office hours is useless.
Do not take the class. Everything she teaches is extremely confusing and going to her office hours is useless. I went multiple times and she seemed uninterested and distracted while attempting to help me and told me I should just go to blackboard for examples. I would not recommend her at all.
I almost did not take this class because of all of the comments. However, this class was not bad at all. All the questions she uses for quizzes, tests, and final are from homework examples. I always finished my quizzes and tests before time was up. If you do the homework and follow the textbook then you can do well in this class. A+ is possible.
She is not helpful at all. She is very disorganized. I am good at Math and I really tried, but it is useless if you want a good grade.
Absolutely the worst class that i have ever taken in my life. She is a horrible teacher and messes up all of her examples. We have to correct her on almost ever problem and you still leave the class knowing absolutely nothing DO NOT TAKE HER AS A TEACHER
worst teacher ive ever had in my entire life. horrible grammar, hard to understand, no idea what shes ever asking from us. this class is PAINFUL to sit through. not clear about any dates. assigns homework that isn't mandatory and then expects the entire class to have it done and gets frustrated when no one does it.
Literally the most useless professor EVER. She literally explains barely anything and then gets incredibly annoyed whenever anyone asks a question. So horrible. Don't do it unless you're completely confident you can teach yourself out of the textbook because you will learn absolutely nothing from her.
I had an awful experience with this professor. Not only is she hard to understand, whenever I went to office hours she was no help. She would say things like "go look in the book" or "its not that hard". Everyone in my class was less than pleased with her, WOULD NOT RECOMMEND!!!!!
She is very disorganized and often loses track of what she is doing. Strong accent. VERY DIFFICULT GRADER. Often times not even a single person in the class would get a 100 on a test or quiz. DO NOT TAKE HER.
Honestly everyone is bashing on her for no reason. Yeah, she wasn't the best teacher nor was she the clearest teacher BUT its statistics. I took her and she was awful at first but once you get in the groove of the class its so easy. Her tests are questions you've seen before. Wouldn't technically 'recommend' but not as bad as people say.
Professor Jahan is really sweet and she's obviously very educated in what she's teaching about. But she can't really teach it, like theres a huge language barrier and sometimes what she's saying doesn't quite make sense. Attendance isn't mandatory although you work in groups and get credit for the work you do in the group. Don't take her.
Heres the truth. Yes it seems that she cannot teach the material very well to the students, BUT her tests are questions from the book with different numbers. Its honestly a piece of cake as long as you understand basic math. If you're really struggling shell help you in office hours. Not the worst teacher.
Not helpful if you don't understand the material right away. Doesn't seem to always know what she's talking about and can be really confusing sometimes. However, if you look over your textbook and read the notes it is possible to get a good grade but try to avoid!!
She's a pretty bad teacher, not much of what she says in lecture will actually help you learn the concepts. Getting the textbook and teaching yourself from it is imperative. Doesn't really matter too much if you miss a class here and there but there are some group activities you do for grades.
Very hard to understand, seems to have an apathetic attitude. Seemed unprepared for class most of the time. Some people just aren't meant to be teachers, she's an example of that.
I didn't think this class was bad at all until exam time. Lectures are boring but I thought pretty helpful in addition to actually going through the textbook. HW due online every Friday, Quizzes every Sunday. As semester goes on, both HW & Quizzes take FOREVER. BUT exams have absolutely no resemblance AT ALL to anything we do in class or HW.
Lectures are very confusing but she doesn't take attendance much and when she does, it doesn't matter. You can easily just teach yourself the material from the book and show up on group work days and test days. Quizzes and HW are all online and very straight-forward.
Not very helpful at all, disorganized and hard to understand. Lectures are boring and quizzes and homework done online. Overall not a great teacher and would not recommend taking her class.
She is a tough grader, and is very unclear about what she wants for answers on assignmentstests. She will take off points for something she never asked for and her tests are too long. VERY UNORGANIZED. I would highly recommend taking another professor, unless you wish to learn nothing in this class and do poorly on everything.
I often left Professor Jahan's class feeling very confused. You can tell she is trying her best, but some of the time the students had to correct her work. This class can be very frustrating and if you aren't a math person, you might find it difficult. If you can, I would avoid this professor.
She is confused and does not explain how she wants any of the work done. You could miss her class and would get the work finished. Only take this teacher if you have taken stat before because if you don't know what is going on, she is not the teacher to have explain things.
DO NOT TAKE HER, she grades way to hard on things she doesn't even tell you to do, has homework and quizzes due over each weekend and has everybody due group projects with random groups, never taking into account that most groups hate each other. She also hates answering questions and just refers students to the text book
I would say that taking a class with Jahan is like taking a class in hell, however I think that even the devil himself would easily recognize her complete and utter incompetence and fire her immediately. She is rude, condescending, and unprepared. If you enjoy having teachers constantly get problems wrong and nit pick your work, she's the one!
Probably the worst teacher I have ever had in my academic career. Got a B in this class after working my ass off in what is supposed to be an easy class. Teacher is not willing to work with you at all. Grades incredibly hard, and averages are low and as a stats teacher, refuses to curve. Avoid at all costs.
If you want to sit through a professor who still needs Rosetta stone then this is the class for you. Her lectures are very tough to follow and she is very unprepared for class. she needs a how to teach for dummies book. she is a very sweet lady but could not teach a class even if the outbreak of ww3 depended on it. Would not recommend.
Signed up for her class my first semester and thought it was going to be a pretty basic class. The first day she came off scatter-brained, and its been hell ever since. I studied for 10 hours for one of the tests and received a 50. Was actually rude to a student regarding their grammar while answering a Q, while she needs help herself.
I'm just here to state that a lot of these comments are incredibly rude. And looking to see that they were posted by people taking Math 220 I understand now. She isn't a teacher to take for lower level math. She is great for upper level stats classses though!
Worst math professor I have ever had. She is incredibly unclear with what she wants, her tests always average in the D range, and she never explains what you got wrong. There are extensive homework/quiz assignments on connect math which take FOREVER but you learn how to do the math, only to see her tests look nothing like the practice. LAZY.
First off, she is very unclear in her explanations during her classes and you are left more confused. The thing that can save your grade is the online homework but the tests are nothing like it. Even when I went in for help, most of the time she turned me away. I would avoid if you can! My class average was a D.
She was very confusing and her tests were nothing like the homework or quizzes you do online. Definitely would not recommend.
Save yourself and do not take professor Jahan. You can tell she really loves what she is talking about, but she is god awful at teaching the material. I leave every class confused. Read the textbook and teach yourself, because her office hours are no help. AVOID AVOID AVOID
One word: Avoid.
It is super easy to get an A on all the homeworks and quizes. Tests are really easy because they are copies of the homework/quiz problems. I got an A on every test including the final. The group work is really easy to get at least a 17/20 on or higher. Just read the textbook before class, each section is less than 10 pages. I would retake the class
She explains things so clearly, the quizzes are open book and online, only 3 tests that if you do practice problems it should be easy, I got A's on them all. She isn't as awful as everyone says.
Despite all the comments I've seen about this professor, I decided to give her a chance. Every answer you give is basically wrong. Not really approachable. Not easy to understand. I do not recommend.
Professor Jahan is a sweet woman but not the best statistics professor. She does an alright job at teaching the material, but manages to be very nit picky on her grading. She does not keep up with posting grades on canvas. She hasn't passed back group work we've done. She seems to love what she's talking about, but not many can understand her.
Professor Jahan is a sweet lady, but she really is not a good teacher. She leaves a lot of blanks in explanation and does not clearly answer any questions. The homework and quizzes are mostly online, so her grade book isn't up to date until the last possible minute causing a lot of stress. Avoid if possible.
AVOID AVOID AVOID. She is actually the worst professor I've ever had. She'll ask the class a question and even if you have the right answer she'll find a way to make you feel stupid. Needless to say, incredibly condescending, ignores emails, could care less about her students. I had taken stats before and got an A yet I earned a C- in her class....
Professor Jahan isn't as bad as everyone says. We used connect math which was super easy and helpful. We were assigned groups which we did work with occasionally. Only true dislike is the fact that she never showed us how to use our calculators to assist us. If you've taken stats before, it's not too bad of a class. She tends to be repetitive.
SO boring. She is very quiet and she'll ask a question and wait around for someone to volunteer to answer (no one ever does and it's super awkward). With that being said, super easy class. Quizzes and homework are online and there are only 2 tests in class. Definitely not the worst class, you'll be fine if you get her
The worst teacher I've ever had. Bc she knows what she's doing she assumes everyone else understands her process of getting an answer and doesn't explain the process/moves quickly. Took stats in high school and got an A yet she still makes this class impossible because of her lack of explanation. Always leave class even more confused
Prof. Jahan assigns online homework's and quizzes on a system called ConnectMath. It is the slowest website I have ever used and it is very frustrating. She often will not teach us material, and then it will appear on the online tests and quizzes, so you have to teach yourself . I hate this class so much. Only take it if you hate yourself.
10/10 don't recommend taking Math 220 with Prof. Jahan. She uses ConnectMath which is the most frustrating online mathematics website. Everyone spends more than one hour on each homework and quiz online and they count for less than 5 points of your overall grade although that is what you spend the most time on. Teaches complete opposite of textbook
Professor Jahan told us that you should round up when using degrees of freedom, but then the next class told us we are actually supposed to round down. My point is: She is the worst at explaining, and will often mess up on pretty important things. I hate this class, do not take her if you can avoid it. She SUCKS at explaining how to do anything!
I'm not a math whiz but Dr. Jahan was pretty good! She isn't a bad teacher as others say but is pretty average. Connect HW and quizzes which you get 2 attempts & 2 hours to do. Tests are straightforward & match what she shows in class & on connect. That being said, did give me 79s and 89s on the tests and wouldn't round. Not the best nor the worst.
The only thing that could kill your grade in this class is tests, because her homework and quizzes have like 2-3 retakes to get the best grade you can. I'm not a math genius or anything yet I still got an A. She'll definitively irk you throughout the semester with her teaching methods but the class really isn't bad. It's gen ed stats
Lecture is boring , but the class itself is pretty easy.
Professor Jahan is a nice lady, she is always here when u need help. Math 220 is really hard, I got 86.7 which should be B. Although B+ is 88 89, Professor Jahan still gave me a B+. TAKE HER!
Dr. Jahan is very knowledgable about math, but is not very confident or clear in her explanation of anything. She knows what she is trying to say and explain but her explanations come off as confusing and unclear in what to do. There is no curve, no matter how poorly the class average is.
She is an extremely bad teacher. Mixes everything up during lecture so she is teaching the material incorrectly most of the time. The hw's are on stuff that you didn't learn. Class average on the tests were 65%. She takes off points for no reason. Take someone else for this class.
DO NOT recommend. Nice lady but a horrible professor. Gave confusing lectures, not a lot of time to get group work done, and exams were too hard. For example, the last week of class we were only given 1 hour to work on a group project that had to b done in class (ended up being 7 pages long) and I went from a 94 to an 80 after I took the final
Did not explain things clearly, was very condescending, even when you got things right, paid $125 for an online homework site (and there was a ton of it), just overall bad at teaching. Only got a good grade because I took stats in high school. If math isn't your strong suit and this is you first stats class, do NOT take her.
Absolutely terrible! Most of the time she's confused on what she is taking about so she uses the words "um yeah", "you know", and "basically". She also creates her own quizzes with no clear directions. I literally just got done arguing with her through email about a quiz she assigned because she did not cover the material in class
She does not make material clear. She claims her exams are set up just like the problems just like Connect Math, BUT THAT IS NOT TRUE!! During online exams(since we got sent home from JMU) she claims she is online to help answer question, BUT THAT IS NOT TRUE!!! DO NOT TAKE HER!!!!
Don't even read the rest of the comments... just exist out, go back to MyMadison and look for another professor. Can barely teach, and was even worse online. She doesn't take anything into consideration. Grading is terrible, and points don't even add up. 10/10 would never take her again ever in my whole life of being on this earth
I tried very hard in this class and did not do well. I did not think that MATH 220 would be a challenge for me, but with her it was.
I read her reviews before choosing her class and thought to myself how bad can she be? I had no other option. Turns out super bad, she can't teach at all; she just reads her slides verbatim and those don't make sense in the first place. She does not care about your grade or your concerns and makes no effort to work with you. She's the worst.
This class genuinely took a minor toll on my mental health. This rating is not coming from a student who did poorly in the class and is taking out their frustration on the professor, this rating is coming from a student who has never gotten a C in his life until now. The class is not taught in a way that sets the student up for success.
This professor is the worst I have ever had. I worked hard all semester to get a good grade and ended up having to retake it. She does not teach at all. If learned something it was from either reading the textbook or meeting with tutors. I would not take this class with her I wish that I waited another semester to get any other teacher.
I took this class trying to ignore the bad reviews but I should have listened. The lectures may have been better in person but the test material is difficult and does not match up with the book. There are few opportunities to raise your grade outside of tests, homework, and two projects. She doesnt update grades regularly. Would avoid at all costs
The professor is very hard to contact and is not understanding. She lectures on a topic, assigns a connect math practice assignment, and then a quiz. She does this for every unit. Your grade is divided between five assessments, your connect math grade, midterm one grade, midterm two grade, group project grade and final project. I would not take her
Do not take this class. If you have her class Rn, drop it before its too late. This was the hardest class of my life and I worked my butt off and I still was not able to do well. Also, at the end of the class I had a 69.58 and emailed her asking for it to be rounded, and she just never responded.
Do not take Math 220 with Nusrat. Do pick another professor, any other professor. You made a mistake? that's your fault according to her. Do not expect her to reply to any of your emails. Do count on learning everything from the textbook and praying your remember how to use SPSS and the formulas for the tests. Good luck with this one yall.
Professor Jahan is NEVER accessible outside of class, gives very boring lectures, and overall is not a very good teacher. Very few people in this class are passing, I am only doing well because I took stats in high school but if this is your first exposure to statistics I would recommend changing professors.
This professor and this class are just frustrating. On our last test she literally wrote a question that had no correct answer. In this class you basically have to teach yourself because all she does is read off poorly worded slides and can't explain anything to you if you don't understand something. If you get stuck with her like I did good luck
It was an online, programming based course where she did not teach us how to use the language yet expected its use on exams/hw. Final 2 weeks went exam, big group project, lengthy reading assignment, final exam. Explicitly told my group to learn methods not taught in her class, then took points off the project for not explaining them sufficiently.
Point distribution system for exams/hw/etc is terribly flawed. It's easy for her to deduct many points and award few. The 3 exams are weighted the heaviest and everything else barely boosts your grade. She is a very slow grader so you won't know your grade until the end. Class discs were pointless and gave me anxiety. She makes you feel incompetent
Does not know how to properly teach the program we are learning stats on. Goes over notes we are supposed to read at home leaving no time to learn the software in class. Expect homework to be new material learning yourself.
She is nice and very smart. But she has the most unbelievably boring classes and you can really skip because its math and she doesn't do so great communicating out side of class. You can expect a few homework assignments a week and only 3 tests a semester. Overall really nice lady, but wouldn't take again because her lectures are just so boring..
If you do not learn by a prof just reading off slides, this is not the class for you. You have 3 tests and quizzes/hw/projs are assigned just days before they're due. She's knowledgeable af, but she can't teach. YOU have to put in a TON of work to get a good grade out of this class, but if you fail one test you will not finish with > a B.
Post 2: Class is just reading off slides and doing few examples. Tests/hw/quizzes are worded differently which makes them more difficult. YOU have to teach yourself the math bc you won't learn any other way. There's a $$$ book, it's never used, just the hw site is. She's nice but there's a difference between being smart vs a good teacher.
I am not a fan of any type of math but I really liked her teaching style and she made the material as simple to understand as possible. She writes her notes with an explanation for each step so theres no confusion. As long as you show up to class and do the homework, you should be fine.
I fall asleep in her lectures, the class seems so easy, but you have to teach yourself. The tests are much harder than anything learned in the class which comes as a surprise. If you take this class, just learn it on your own and dont show up to class.
Do not under ANY circumstance take this class
she makes you feel stupid when you ask questions. don't take her if you can avoid it.
If I had not taken stat before I would have done very poorly in this class. Dr. Jahan seems like a very nice lady, but as a teacher, she does not meet the ideal standards. Her lectures are boring and repetitive while not really giving much assistance. The class felt unorganized and was not assisted well in what already was a hard course.
Dr. Jahan teaches the class almost exclusively through powerpoint slides, which doesn't really give you the opportunity to learn anything. Hardly reviewed the coding software and expected us to just understand it. Always answered emails fast, though, but I had to ask a LOT of questions especially at the end of the semester. Didn't really teach.
The expectations of this class are extremely confusing. She says attendance is mandatory but she takes attendance on random days and sometimes she doesn't take it at all. She seems lost during lecture whenever someone asks a question as if everyone should know everything already. So much is left out of lecture from the book too. Dont take her.
She isn't mean at all, but she doesn't know how to teach and kinda teaches like she talking to herself. The ALEKS hws are not bad but when she has quizzes or tests on paper it is totally different, she doesn't prepare well. Overall, nice lady but can not teach.
She is super unorganized, it makes it very hard to pay attention in class. She also makes you feel dumb if you ask a simple question. She doesn't prepare you well for things that end up on the test. The only saving grace is the Aleks system grades.
DO NOT TAKE HER IF POSSIBLE! If you have not already done statistics are willing to relearn everything teaches outside of class you will fail! The students have had to correct her on so many things to the point she just asks us to do the work after reading off a slide so we "practice" when in reality she just can't teach. Save yourself the trouble.
she was a very nice and caring person but I struggled in her class. I felt as though I was teaching myself math the entire semester. This was a hard class not because the material was hard but because so much extra time needs to be put into understanding what's going on. I honestly thought I was going to have to retake this class.
Do. Not. Take. Beyond disorganized and ALWAYS was late to class. Lectures made no sense because she didn't even understand what she was teaching. When using R studio, she didn't know the code and had us just google it. Test were difficult and on material we did not go over. Assigns homework with out telling you on third party site. She was clueless
DO NOT TAKE. Very disorganized, and not helpful at all. It was very hard to get any help from her. We would have no assignments for weeks, and then a crap ton at once. She likes to post work on Sun., but its due that Mon. or Tues. She doesn't know how to work R studio, and will tell you to google it and figure it out yourself. Also a SLOW grader.
DO NOT TAKE AT ALL COSTS!! I have never done bad in a math class until I was in her class. She spends so long talking about useless information which creates horrible time management. She refuses to answer questions on the project. She walks out of the class and leaves you by yourself saying "good luck" and that's not even all of it. Stay clear!!!!
Each class consisted of her reading off slides for the majority of the time with very little time spent using R. Not much homework and tests are easy enough. It felt like sometimes she didn't know what she was talking about or how to get R to work the way we wanted, but fine otherwise.
Dr. Jahan was great. So many people did not like her, but I think a lot of that came from it being a difficult class in nature. The homework assignments were helpful, and the exams were fairly straight forward. She does take a while to grade though.
Attendance is not mandatory in the sense that its graded, but you'll definitely have to show up to keep up. Be ready to study. A lot. Don't expect her to explain much, she is inefficient with time- the tutors jmu offers and khan academy will go a long way.
She does not know how to teach. Every class is based on PowerPoint presentations. We do countless ALEX assignments and then get tested on completely different materials we barely cover. She seems so confused when explaining anything. She forgot we had a midterm until a student told her, includes so much that is not needed. No clarity in this class.
You will have to teach yourself, also very bad at lecturing. She tells not teaches. Very hard to follow with what she is saying. Most of the time she did not know what she was talking about and did not know SPSS and R. I would just wait instead of taking her and seeing what you get
Assignments are often assigned at weird times leaving availability for completion very up-in-the-air and hurried. Prepare for lots- and lots of lecturing that comes off more like her just rambling than actually teaching. The work isn't unbearable in quantity, which is the only good thing I can really say. Expect to teach yourself in this class.
get ready to fall asleep, if you've ever taken a class where you have to teach yourself this is the final boss. I don't think she ever talked about anything that was important to the material once in class she only read directly off the slides and then would move on even if it didn't make sense. Her accent is thick and so is her skull.
-she once wrote "21-19 equals 3" on the chalkboard -she once said the phrase "up syndrome and down syndrome" (???) -she once gave my friend points off an assignment for "using the infinity symbol instead of the alpha symbol" when she literally used the alpha symbol instead of the infinity symbol -dont take her unless shes absolutelyrequired
be ready to teach yourself everything and to dedicated 1-2 hours to homework assignments only worth 10 points and assigned within a 2-3 day notice. she was not good at explaining the material and was hard to understand. definitely avoid at all costs
I wouldn't recommend this professor. Lectures were so incredibly boring, especially when they were over zoom as she would just put up a slideshow with way too much information for students to write down. She would often test on something we did once versus the homework which took often took hours.
I didn't have a hard time. She was hard to follow during lectures and she kept messing up on her own problems, making it really hard to follow. She also used SPSS and didn't really explain it that well (at least to me).
Never had a professor disrespected students time as much as she did. Averaged 8 mins late to every class, would leave abruptly for up to 10 mins, and always went over time. I am glad I took stat in highschool and this is just a major req. bc she was one of the worst teachers ever as well and nothing she said made any sense at all, lots of tangents.
Super late to every class and class ran late. Lectures were super boring but if you do worksheets and actually pay attention in class you should do fine on the tests. You have to teach yourself outside of class because the lectures are spent on the same thing.
Okay, I made a lot of mistakes and failing her class was mainly my fault. But it wasn't made any better by the fact that there's 2 main exams and the final is 25% of your grade. My class had D to C- averages on all of them. Also, when I tried to ask her anything, she would always be exasperated. Mandatory $100 for 10 assignments was not it ngl.
You better get to class early and sit in the back because get ready for the most boring lectures of your life. I don't think I paid attention one singular time I was in this class. She is a fun sponge
Her lectures are boring but she isn't an awful professor. If you listen and do the ALEKS, you should be completely fine. This midterm carries a lot of weight for some reason, more than the final which is interesting. Just pay attention and come to class and you should be fine.
Do not take this class, even if you need it for your major. You should drop it. She is at least six minutes late to EVERY class and still doesn't know our names. She doesn't care about her students and will not make accommodations, even when everyone fails a test. Her teaching is nonexistent, she constantly get problems wrong and she is confusing.
The lectures were painfully boring and not very helpful. You'll need to teach yourself the material outside of class. Assignments are often sprung on you last minute. Definitely use Unstuck AI and other study tools to get through this one.
Some of these ratings are a little harsh towards Dr. Jahan. While the lectures are a bit boring, if you participate and pay attention, you will do well. All the homework is on ALEKS and you can retry until you get it right, which is great for practice. The class is very test heavy, but as long as you put in the time and effort, you'll pass easily.
DO NOT TAKE HER FOR MATH 220! very nice person, but her class was very difficult (IMO). i had to reteach myself all the lessons.
Jahan's ratings are harsh. Yes, she runs late, lectures are boring, and ALEKS is like $90. However, she is a great teacher if you actually show up and pay attention. She does practice problems every unit, identical to exam questions. Midterm- 40% and final- 20%. She also had office hours that help a bunch if you know what you're struggling with.
handouts and tests are all on paper. She poorly explains the material and doesn't understand how to help you when you are confused. The tests are your entire grade and she has a NO CURVE policy so when the class average is a 35% that's what you'll be receiving. The tests are all open response and she gives a equation sheet that doesn't help at all.
horrible. worst teacher I have ever had. she should never of been allowed to teach. laughs in peoples faces when she hands back a bad grade. does not care to help you in any situation ever. tests are super hard class avg is below 70. literally makes 0 sense in class you will have to teach urself, run for the hills, hills that r extremely far away.
Exams are so extremely hard especially because you have to teach urself everything. They basically determine your grade. She gives the absolute hardest possible questions, that you don't practice in class
She is one of the most difficult professors I have ever had at JMU. Not only is the class only graded by a few things, you don't actually know what your grade is most of the time because she doesn't grade things until the very end. I found her class super difficult, and I'm usually good at statistics. Would not recommend if this is for your major.
This is the worst math class. She grades nothing and blames it on TAs being unavailable. She only cares about the answers on tests, and she does NOT curve the grade; the homework is worth 10%. Expects you to read the textbook and understand all the material, then does problems and doesn't explain how they're done, basically only teaches definitions
please save yourself and do not take her. half the mean tests are all under 60%. she is so rude and doesn't help with anything. please seriously find a better teacher.
RUNNNN SO FAR AWAY. Ur ENTIRE grade is the midterm and the mean of the class is always below 70 and the lowest scores are always in the 20s FOR A REASON. genuinely awful in every way save urself.
DO NOT TAKE!! Your grade is solely determined by midterms and no one ever does well on them. The tests are worded weirdly, so even if you think you know the material, you won't do well. She doesn't explain or teach things well at all. While she can be nice, she also can be very short and rude.
She is very nice and does care about her students, however she doesn't seem to understand how to help if you are struggling. If you do not get a good group on the group project for the last few weeks be ready to do those on your own, she will just tell you to talk to them. Do not take her if you cannot self learn all the material.
she's a nice woman, however, do NOT take her class. you're going to have to teach yourself all the material. majority of your grade is based off the midterm that NO ONE does well on. she does not explain things well and office hours aren't helpful at all. DO NOT TAKE HER
She was OK. Exams were almost exactly like worksheets. If you pay attention and practice you will be fine. I didn't pay attention at all in class and just made sure I understood the worksheets completely before exams. I didn't do great but she wasn't tricky.
This is the most difficult and anxiety enducing class and she is fully the problem. Even if you study for hours I promise it still will not make sense ever they never have the same content on lectures, homeworks, and exams. Dont take this class if you were hoping to be happy.
PLEASE LISTEN TO THE REVIEWS! I genuinely thought I would be fine. LOL SIKE. The lectures are confusing, exams are the majority of your grade, which nobody does well on, and are never curved. The almost 200-dollar textbook for homework doesn't relate to anything you're doing in class. Be prepared to teach yourself everything.
I took AP stats in high school so I thought I'd be okay.. but no. She isn't super good at teaching the material and if someone has a question she gets confused. The exams were kind of difficult at times but were very similar to the worksheets. They're like 40% of your grade though so make sure you do well or you're screwed.
She seemed really nice at first—only on the first day—but she is actually very rude and insensitive to what students are going through. She grades extremely harshly and is not helpful at all when you ask her questions. Many times, she gets confused about her own answers, and there have been several instances where us students had to correct her.
in taking this class i started praying again. these 2 things don't seem related, but i promise you, they are. never in my life did i think elementary statistics would be difficult, but here i am. sweet lady, but the exam worth 40% of your grade quite literally determines everything. the HOURS of homework you do counts for basically nothing.
