She's easy to understand and she seems to care a lot. If you go to lecture you should be fine for exams even though she likes to do a lot of pointless demonstrations.
A very nice professor, but a tough as nails class
If you took AP Chem with a decent teacher, this class is cake anyway.
A very good professor in my opinion, however her exams were difficult. She is extremely helpful and does a TON of demonstrations, most of which are pointless. However, she was one of the best professors I have had.
Midterms very fair. Quizzes are a piece of cake and meant to be easy points--never studied. Final is basic. She said she would drop the grading scale since so few people got 90+ (an A) on her midterms. This never happened, and for me it was difference between a B and a BC, I was 12 points away. The final point breakdown was not posted, either.
so easy going female
She is a normal teacher, sometime i can't understand what she wants from us,she has a weird accent....it is a kind of boring to attend her class, but after i will have the opportunity of changing the class, maybe next year,i will have other possibility.i have some colleagues who like her..so everyone is free to tell what he think about anyone
She is a super nice woman but not a very good professor. Lectures are super boring and she does not move nearly fast enough for this course. Be prepared to teach yourself out of the book if you have to take her for it.
She is a super nice woman but not a very good professor. Lectures are super boring and she does not move nearly fast enough for this course. Be prepared to teach yourself out of the book if you have to take her for it.
Easy going and a little slow but quite enjoyable. Easy tests.
She's a good teacher... Exams expect you to know a little about a lot. She's also very attractive.
Just come to class and do what she tells you to do. Really, she's one of those professors who's nice enough to give you easier materials in the exam than in her lectures.
If you go to lecture and go to discussion, you can easily get at least a B in this class with the curve. She does a good job going over some definitions stuff in class, however be prepared for a lot of pointless demonstrations, many of them you don't even need to know about. However I heard she is a better than most Chem 103 Professors, so up to u.
Very easy class if you attend discussion and lecture. She is very nice and will help you with anything if you just ask. Exams are much easier than what the book has. Book goes much more into detail than what she asks on the test
Professor Martin is one of my favorite professors. She is so excited to teach Chemistry and brings a lot of enthusiasm to the class. She is very helpful and wants her students to succeed. I thought the class was pretty fair, and the tests are easy if you study.
Martin's class is extremely easy. She goes over everything very slowly in class and her exams are all multiple choice. There's no need to read the book and you can still easily manage an A on the exams!
Took the final today. Either she's a good teacher or/and or the class is just easy because this class really didn't take too much effort. The pace is good (slow?) and you really do learn a lot. I thought the final was pretty easy but apparently others didn't. I just really don't like the labs but all classes have the same labs so can't complain.
She was awesome! I had her last semester and she was the best chem professor I've had. She definitely prepared me for the next level of chemistry. (analytical AND organic)
She's cool! Easy and it's not bad going to her classes, they fly by!
Exams deal directly with the book. No outside learning necessary.
Prof. Martin is very engaged in the class and loves her job. She's from Romania, and even after ten years (or so) at Wisconsin, her accent still hinders some lectures. If confused, she is ready and willing to help with any issues that come up in class. Homework is very easy/straightforward if lectures are attended, and tests are fairly graded.
She is very clear in what she teaches and is engaged. I got 3 midterms with average of 92 on all of them (the class average was 60, 70, and 75). Take her for Chem 103- enough said
Really nice, uses lots of examples. She doesn't teach everything from the book but she only makes the exams cover what she taught. The book goes into more depth than what she teaches but she teaches exactly what you need to know. Really approachable and friendly during office hours too!!
Martin is the best! Her tests are very fair, and everything that is on the test is clearly explained in lecture, so you only need the textbook for clarification. She does a lot of examples and makes Chemistry an easy and approachable subject. I was so afraid and had heard horror stories of 103 but with Martin theres nothing to be afraid of!
iClicker was used to take attendance so go to the lec! Oana makes it really fun with lots of interesting examples! You are only tested on what is taught in lecture so the book is only needed for clarity and extra reading.
Oana is super nice and friendly! She tries to make class fun by doing experiments, but often they are irrelevant and take away from the lesson. I attended lecture but rarely paid attention because I learned more form my TA.
I really enjoyed class with Oana. She is so nice and cares a lot about her students and the class. She is so nice and definitely the easiest professor for CHEM 103. I'm really happy I have her again for next semester.
Oana is an excellent professor. Her notes are clear, and she really cares about her students.
Oana is the CUTEST prof. ever. She is adorable, her exams are all multiple choice, which is VERY nice.SRONGLY recommend!!!!
Prof Martin is the best. She really cares about how you're doing in the class. Tests are multiple choice and she covers all you need to know right in the lecture. In CHEM 103 I didn't do very well (BC), but this semester I'm getting an A. I would highly recommend you take your gen. chem. classes with her.
Keeps you attention in class. For a chemistry class exams shouldn't be based on conceptual knowledge, and multiple choice questions. Forget calculations in her class since she makes very few points based on calculations.
She is such a nice teacher! She acts so nice to everyone and always brightens your day. Material is very clear and easy to follow and she only tests you on things she goes over in lecture. Tests were very easy and all multiple choice! Take her if you can! BEST PROFESSOR EVER
Prof. Martin was great. She is really great about making the material relateable like she understands how to explain it in a way that people new to it will understand. I'd take one of her classes again.
Oana is the sweetest person ever! She is so friendly and approachable. Her explanations for the most part are very clear. Lecture is boring sometimes and experiments are pointless, but she makes up for it by making everything clear and straight forward. She's not going to ask incredibly challenging test questions. Overall great prof!
Martin was good and her accent wasn't that bad. Curve is generous. I would recommend her
Not the best teacher out there. Her tests were okay, but I didn't get much out of her class. My TA seemed to do a better job teaching.
Her accent, combined with the way she presents information, can put you to sleep sometimes. However, she is one of the more enthusiastic teachers and always brings alot of energy to class
Professor Martin always makes lecture interesting and worth coming to. Reading the book and understanding it is the key to good test grades. There is only so much a professor can do, but she does a great job in my opinion.
The best professor I've had so far. She explains everything with clear examples, and her lectures correspond with the book readings very well. Tests tend to be tough, especially her mastery problem. However, I would absolutely reccommend her.
Professor Martin may not be the best at explaining things but she is very sweet and funny in lecture. Tests are difficult, but doable and the homework load is fairly light.
I loved Oana. She really knows the material well, provides clear concise examples, and is all around a great professor. Genuinely cares about the students understanding Chemistry. You'll have to work hard but it is worth it.
Sweetest prof there is. She makes you feel at home in her office. Very clear in her explanations and makes sure that you understand the material. Works through the problems with you. Tests are rough, but the class is worth it. Recommend her.
Very lenient and reasonable with grades at the end.
I loved her classes. Awesome teacher. She is awesome when you go to her office hours/ask questions. But tests are a bit hard.
Professor Martin is absolutely fantastic. She takes the time to make sure everyone is comfortable in regards to topics, she explains everything well when walking through problems, and is outrageously kind and approachable. Prof. Martin is pretty much everything you could want in a professor.
A fast paced class for sure, the exams can be quite difficult, Martin does a good job at keeping the class interesting but can improve upon going more in depth into the material. Homework is nothing like the exam.
Very kind professor who wants students to succeed, but she is not particularly helpful. Most of the lectures only touch the surface of the material, and are otherwise filled with nearly useless demonstrations. The homework and practice exams are significantly easier than the true midterms and final, so be careful in preparation.
Prof Martin was super helpful and honestly wanted her students to so well. She provided every opportunity for us to prepare and succeed. That being said chemistry is a difficult subject and as a student you actually have to apply yourself and put in the time in order to expect a good grade.
So blessed to have Oana for chemistry!! Made it very easy, like taking a high school class. My TA SUCKED so thank god for the professor. Exams are fair, homework is fair for the most part but read the book if you think she hasn't gone over something. Extremely nice lady you can ask her anything anytime. Probably best professor I've had so far.
She is a fantastic professor! I didn't take chem in high school so this course was tough for me, but she explained concepts in a very understandable way, is super nice, and really helpful if you ask for help! I would highly recommend her to anyone.
Oana is the sweetest lady ever! Chem is overall difficult but she does a pretty decent job at explaining the concepts, sometimes she gets off topic though.
she is the cutest prof I've ever had and her lectures taught me so much. i would highly recommend her!
She is okay. But she doesn't really try to help you. She lies to her students on what is going to be on the exam. Overall, I would avoid.
She is the best professor ever! She teach the material very clear and makes the class fun. The exams can be a little challenging but not all the exam, there are normally 1 challenging question and the rest is ok. She is very helpful and cute.
Her lectures weren't that useful and I didn't read the book at all, but I still received an A at the end. If you put time into the homework, you will receive a good grade. The tests are hard, but the grades at the end are lenient. Still one of my favorite professors.
Prof. Martin us super sweet and approachable. Her lectures are well organized and easy to follow. Attendance isn't mandatory but clicker questions are a small part of your grade. She is very helpful at office hours. I'd say if you take the time to read the book and work through practice problems, an A is very attainable.
She was a great professor and would really recommend her. Her tests are tough but she curves well and if you keep up to date with the material you should understand everything. great class!
She is the sweetest professor in the world, take chem with her if you have the chance!
The sweetest Professor I have ever have! Always so nice and helpful. :)
Go to all of the lectures, PAY ATTENTION. She basically tells you what is on each exam. Homework is harder than what is on the quizzes/exams, but do it anyway. Go to office hours if you need help, (her office hours are usually empty). Her practice exams are 3x easier than her actual exam, so STUDY. Know the main concepts and you will be fine.
Love her! She's great at lecturing. Problems setspractice exams are great representations of the actual exams. Keep up on understand the material.
Professor Martin is AWESOME She really made me fall in love with chemistry. Tests are very fair. Everything in lecture is fair game but as long as you go, tests are straight forward.
Ochem is a beast no matter who the professor is. Dr. Martin is super sweet and the material is straightforward in class, but the quizzes and exams are rough. She likes to do clicker questions which take awhile, and then she has to rush to finish everything she wanted to cover in one day.
Oana Martin is by far one of the best professors I have had in a long time! She seriously has made me love ochem. Her tests and quizzes are tough. Recommendation: Always stay one step ahead of the game, keep up with the practice sets and exams, go to class and you'll do exceptional!
Shes a good lecturer and clearly has a passion. She really cares about her students as well. That being said her exams were tough (the averages were about 5-15% lower than any other prof) and very difficult to prepare for as there was minimal resources offered.
Dr. Martin's first time teaching 343 was just okay. Exams were harder than course material and tested extrapolations of concepts breezed over in lecture. Understanding the tough homework problem sets was crucial in doing well on exams.
Dr. Martin is the sweetest person I've ever met. Her lecture is clear and straightforward, writes everything on the board. Her tests are really hard because she includes some concepts that she didn't really emphasis. Problem sets are hard, and the practice exam is easier than the actual one. But there are tons of resources to help you succeed.
If you want to do well, you need to go to lecture. Exams are tough, but the curve was always good. Probably the best chemistry professor I've had here
Oana was amazing. If you have the chance, take her class! Super sweet lady who cared about her students. Master the problem sets and you will excel on the exams. People who complain about her didn't put in the effort. This isn't a cupcake class, you're not in high school. Do your work and she will put you in a position to succeed. Best teacher yet.
This class was not too bad at all, assuming you put in the time. Don't be afraid of taking organic chemistry, especially if you have Dr. Martin.
Best Chem prof I've ever had and would highly recommend her to anyone taking ochem. Tests are hard, but problem sets help a lot so make sure to do them and re-do them before the test, plus the curve is great. Lectures aren't absolutely necessary as she posts the notes online, but it still helps to go to lecture so everything is completely clear.
Oana is amazing. Very nice and understanding. The exams are 100% from lectures and the TAs sometimes take bad notes, so go. If you do the the problem set each week and ask your TA to clarify you're good to go. Dont read the book except maybe for the last unit. Final was easiest exam of the course.
I had her for o chem and am really glad. She's a great professor and is wants to teach the students. O chem is hard, so you have to put a lot of time into it. There isn't graded homework, so if you don't study, you won't do well. Wish I could have her again!
She's such a great person but such a difficult professor. Her expectations were way too high and I got nothing from lecture. The exams were not challenging, but impossible. This course made me change my major.
She rocks!! I seriously make up questions just so that I can go to her office hours. Lectures are very clear, and online homework each week really emphasizes what you need to know. She is very clear about what will be on exams, and exams are fair for the time allotted. Lots of demos to keep students engaged, and she cares so much about students!
Professor Martin is incredibly nice and her teaching style is very clear. She gives plenty of examples that will are useful for the exams. She goes over the material very thoroughly in lecture so it's a good idea to show up. There are assigned readings but they aren't required and she always goes over it in class.
Dr. Martin is an awesome lecturer and a very sweet person. She is so willing to answer questions and she goes over material very thoroughly in lecture. The lectures are basically taken from the assigned readings so if you don't do them you will still learn everything. The exams are very similar to practice exams and aren't too difficult.
I was unsure how I would feel about her at first, but I'm so glad I had the opportunity to take. She assigns weekly homework and quizzes, but they all help and are related to class material. If you study for the tests you will be fine.
Oana was an awesome professor! It was her first time teaching 343 when I took it and she did an exceptional job. The test material was straightforward, the problems sets she gave helped me learn, and the grading was fair. Really cares about her students and enjoys teaching.
Professor Martin is excellent! While her lectures can often seem long, they are very informative. Her tests are very fair (most of the time) as she tends to stay away from the gotcha sort of questions. Her grading policy is extremely fair, as the average grade in the class is a B and 25% of the class gets an A. TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!
Oana is an amazing professor who truly cares about her students. She integrates demonstrations into her lecture, so lectures are rarely boring. Her exams and quizzes are extremely fair and follow what she said in lecture. I highly recommend her for this class!!!
Adorable young Romanian woman. She explains chemistry very well and is clearly excited by the subject matter. She prepares you well for Chem 343
Dr. Martin is a great chemistry professor and all of the other reviews are spot on. The exams were faireasy for the most part, and she takes the time in lecture to make sure students understand concepts before moving on.
I thought Oana was adorable but I found her lectures to be very challenging to follow. When I would look over my notes to study for her tests (which were very challenging) I would struggle to understand what my notes meant. There were weekly quizzes that counted the same as a midterm which were not too challenging if you knew the material.
Course is challenging, but Oana makes it bearable.
The best professor I've had at UW. She explained everything very clearly. I actually wanted to go to her lectures because they were enjoyable, and she mixed in real world examples into her lectures. The tests were representative of what she covered in class. Definitely take her if you can.
Oana was great at defining and giving examples in her lectures. She kept her lectures interesting, and genuinely cared about her students. Her exams were pretty straightforward, if you study and know the concepts you'll do great. She gave quizzes in discussion, so be prepared for those. Try to get Oana if possible!
