It was easy to get an A, but I didn't learn much. Thick accent, nice guy.
He explains the class from experience. Very informative and wants students to participate alot in class. Overall, very good.
Don't just don't!
otunnu is overall a ok guy, but is very very very unclear about what he expects out of u for assignments.(esp term papers(bad exp.))and tests i dont recommend this class (world refugee crisis) or him at all. thick accent and very unclear.
Hes a nice person. That doesn't make him a good teacher, sorry.
Is a very friendly teacher, just not very clear on assignments and has a tough grading scale for essay tests. Final presentation and paper seem to be only basis for grades
I think he is nice and he will do anything for you as long as you ask him you might think he is hard but he is easy to take advantage of trust me thats how i get through school and it worked on him
You think its a easy class...then it bits you on the a**. He seems like a really nice person, but its clear he thinks his students are idiots. I would NEVER take him again. I got a B, which isn't horrible but I still hated the class.
OMG! do not take him! he seems so nice n stuff but he's not willing to listen to you and he grades hard as hell. i got a B but i hated him. he told 3 students to e-mail him and he never replied. avoid him if you can. horrible teacher! cant explain nuthin!
Stay away! His classes are so boring and his grading is very unfair.
Intelligent-but Otunnu lacks any teaching skill-his lectures are long winded disorganized and unclear His methodology is to make students read packets of info of sometimes more than 2 hrs of reading before his "lectures" worst teacher ive ever h
veryy nice guy... teaching is aite.. totaly knew his stuff though..and easy to approach. Grading was not always clear though.

Nice guy, good teacher, poor grader. Knows course content inside and out, but is a ridiculous grader. Lets you leave class early if no one participates, but when it comes down to the quizzes, grading is all over the place and not based on your answers.
He is very disorganized and gives out arbitrary grades. Students who work hard and students who do nothing end up with the same grade. Although he is very knowledgeable about the subject area, he is a horrible lecturer.
He's a really nice guy, but he was very disorganized. If u want a blow-off class take this guy.
Otunnu is the man!! Do the work, read a little, and talk. He is a great teacher and knows an abundance of info. Can't wate to have him again.
this guy is not a good teacher, wont meet with students, disorganized, and seems like he is too busy doing other crap to care about his classes-having said that, he is open to moving ur grade up if u just meet with him like 50 times :)
Avoid if you can
Not sure why some people are being so harsh. He teaches students like professionals and asks nothing more of them. He doesn't like slackers and gives extremely interesting lectures. He gives you the grade you deserve-nothing more or less.
He is awesome. He is very helpful and consideratee on what happenes to his students. Although it is hard to understand him, he is one of the most friendly profs at DePaul. And yes you can meet with him just make an appointment or just talk to him, vryhelpf
Couldn't understand him in class. Writes random things on the board, very hard to follow. One test and final project, if you like reading take this class
alright
Avoid!
Ottunu is hilarious. Take the time to chat with him. I do admit his grading system is odd.
didnt understand what he said and he grades whatever he wants however he wants
Hard to understand...when I got my grade back, he had B- written down. I asked if I could look at the grades for the whole quarter cause I thought I did better, he said "how bout a B+?" I still think I got an A. Avoid this teacher...he pretty much gives everyone a B, but I don't think A possible
horrible PLEASE AVOID
He has a strong accent but I got used to it. He's a really nice guy. If you show that you care at all, which I am not good at doing, he'll help you.
Very interesting!!Otunnu expects you to know too much, very unfair if you havent taken African history before. To get a good grade you have to treat his class like a Sr. Level class. All essay tests, does not specify what he wants on the tests just says do your best and grades you according to everyone
One of the nicest, happiest professors at Depaul. However, he gave me the first C I've ever received on a test. Our class meets once a week & so for the past 4 weeks we've had an essay test each time we've met! Not to mention the 15 page paper thats due! It is nearly impossible to take this class while taking three others. Also, A TON of reading!
this guy is amazing-gives a lot of work but lets u make up for anything if u cant do it on time cuz he knows its hard to finish on time with the load.easy in class writen assinmnts.his passin grd starts at 63 and it is easy to pass.i give him A+

Otunnu makes himself extremely unavailable to students. When he says he will be in his office, he usually isn't, so it's impossible to ask him for help or grades. He doesn't really seem to care if anyone learns, just if he gets through it all. His teaching style and his syllabus are VERY hard to understand!!
He really knows his material, and he's so passionate about it that you can't help but be interested in what he's saying. Although his grading was tough, and the work load at times a bit much, I learned a lot in this class and it was always engaging and interesting.I recommend him completely.
If you are interested in the civil injustices of the world(genocide, mass rape, displacements)take this class. A plus if you know a lot on Uganda. The prof. is interesting and very helpful(3/7/06)
instead of learning about world wars and there dates and hilter this and stalin that- you learn about events that are really interesting like genocide. if you can withstand a lecture and take notes- and READ like 50 pages a week- you'll totally do fine in this class. Got a B+ and I forgot to read for a whole week and half.
It is important that you take time to read his material. Very understanding professor- and clases are not boring. If he sees that the students are bored he knws he failed his job and will let the students out early. Very comical. his 228 is about african images, colonization, apatheid.
3 small papers, 1 final paper and 1 presentation are expected. Otunnu never lectured and the student presentations were nothing more than book reports of the material you were expected to read. Five weeks were spent learning nothing. Very frustrating waste of money and time.
He was very interesting BUT all essays are written in class with a specific outline and without notes. Some of reading I had to re-read to really get it, but if you keep up with the mountains of readings, you'll do good...but you've got to read the material. He is very helpful and a good lecturer.
This class was tons of reading. He graded his essays very tough. In fairness he is open to let students do makeups. Basically our entire class ended up doing. I took this during summer - all I have to say is that between classes we were giving reading assignments that came to a total of 300 pages. With all that being said I was content with B.
Otunnu is a good teacher. Explanations are clear and he encourages class debates. he keeps class interesting. his teacher style is rigorous, but you dont leave empty headed if you follow the reading. try to read the assigned readings before class and you'll most likely make an A.
def. a good teacher to take, assigns a lot of reading but goes over the material really well...
Hard grader. Holds monopoly on African History. If you are History major, I suggest to avoid him and take Ancient Egypt instead, for African domain. HE WILL MESS UP your****GPA!
Otunnu is one of the *best* professors at DePaul. I felt honored to be one of his students. You have to work really hard but it's well worth it. Don't take the class if you aren't willing to do a lot of reading.
I absolutely love Dr. Otunnu. I know a lot of students don't like his class, but I think they're afraid of a heavy workload. He's very knowledgeable about the subject matter and will help you if you ask for it. I've taken two courses from him and hope I can take more. I can't get enough.
Very interesting class. Lots of reading, but totally worth it. I would take Otunnu again anytime.
Very kind teacher. Extremely generous with grades. Nice and interesting classes. I'd take him again
loooooove his prof! After taking his course I knew exactly what type of HST I wanted to focus on...This guy is great! Very interesting lectures, wants his students to learn and do well, has hands on experience on the topics he discusses. If you get a chance to take his class, DO IT, even if its not ur major or concentration, you wont regret it!
I read about 25% of what he assigned i i had the time to read it all but i still got an A- It's really easy and very interesting
I am not good at history classes, but I couldn't resist a class called World Refugee Crisis. The topic intrigued me, and so did the course. There was a lot of reading and he was not an easy grader, but I would take him again b/c he's very informed, hilarious, and genuinely a good person. You'll like him. It's worth the work.
Prof Otunnu's World Refugee Crisis was possibly the greatest class ive ever taken.
he was extremly informed in the topic, alot of the readings were his published works. He was a fairly tough grader but if you do the readings you really should not have a problem. He has an accent but you can get over it. He was one of the best teachers I have had this year, I actually learned alot in the class.
In the words of Comic Book Guy "Best Professor Ever!" Otunnu is the effing man. I'm not just saying this because I did well in his class :)
I don't know what these people are talking about. This man was possibly the worst professor I've ever had... he's a nice man, he's just never in the country enough to teach a class, and doesn't care. He lectured in 5 classes out of 10, and even then he was repetitive and not cohesive-- although mildly amusing. Take him if you have time to waste.
DO NOT TAKE THIS MAN..it's clear he couldn't care less about how his students do, he is very unclear and short about what he expects out of you, on top of that the subject he gave my final paper on wasn't even covered in class and barely in the assigned reading, and i have to write a ten pg paper and do a 20 min presentation on it...AVIOD!!!!
Another example of a smart person who should not be teaching. He is unavailable, and inconsistent and also lectures for less than 2 hours of a 3 hour night class. He cancelled one class because it was inauguration night. Not worth the money, aggravation or time if you ask me.
I am a senior with a 4.0 who enjoys history. WORST PROF. EVER. SOOOO unclear in what he wants in EVERY assignment. Only lectured in 3 of 10 night classes, other classes were exams that were never clearly explained. I can handle a heavy workload, but it doesnt matter if you do the reading if he never explains the exams & grades hard. goodbye 4.0
Bad news bears. His assignments were beyond unclear, ambiguous, and very little guidance was given as to what we even needed to do to get a good grade in the class. Suppose it didn't really matter -- his grading on things like participation (which was worth 15% of the final grade) were done arbitrarily. Nice guy, but I'd never take him again.
Although students who don't work hard and who not that smart complain about this professor, he is one of the best professors I have met. Extremely smart. Knows the subjects he teaches so well. Has published extensively in the field. And is invited to lecture at the leading universities in Europe and North America.
I took the same course with some of the people who wrote quite harshly about the professor. Those of us who participated in class, followed the instruction he gave, and worked hard, got very good grades. The professor was quite clear in what he expected us to accomplish. he was very clear in his lectures. The grading was clear as well. The problem
I agree that students who don't follow instruction and don't work hard should avoid prof. Otunnu. However, those who qualify to join any majot university should take him. His expectations are quite high and he lectures with that in mind. Excellent professor who is willing to help student reach their full potential.
If you are willing to work hard, take his courses. His teaching expectations are shaped by his previous training and teaching in Canada and the UK. If you have been getting good grades for poor quality work, don't take him. Baptism by fire!!
Someone who was in the same class with me claim on this forum that her/his advisor suggested that students don't take the professor's classes because they have had many problems. Here are simple questions: why are his courses full every year? Why do my graduate colleagues in ISP "die" to have him as their theses supervisor? The prof is great!!
My advisor check prof. Otunnu's taeaching evaluation in the department of history (they are in files at the reception) and confirmed that his evaluations are at the top. He is extremely popular with students and does an outstanding job. Just ask for the evaluations. Those who are complaining are a very tiny % of his students.
While his lectures are fascinating & he's generally an amiable person - it seems as though teaching is an afterthought of a job for him. He's inconsistent with his grading & allots/takes points arbitrarily and not based on actual merit. Participation was worth 15% though he canceled 2 classes, scheduled exams for 3, & let us out early everyday.
My friend who took the same course with the previous commentator asked me to respond to the comment. Only one class was cancelled. The pead the commentator sylabus because participation is 15% of the grade. If you can't participate why take such a course?
Hes a great guy and a good prof.Jokes around alot but the class is a whole diff story. You have an in class response paper to something u read, and then a mid term which is basically u writing for 2 hrs straight. And 2 weeks after the mid a 10 pg paper is due, after that its easy in fact we didnt go to the last 2 classes. Too much reading tho.
This guy is HORRIBLE! waaaaay too much reading that we didn't even go over in class. and instead of posting reading material on blackboard, he just tells you to google smth and if you cant find it, tough luck. His exams are VERY HARD and he IS NOT an easy grader! He doesn't really care about his students and whether they do well in his class :(
Worst teacher I've ever had. He does not care about his students. He canceled about 3 of our night classes and 1 of those we did not find out about until we arrived in the classroom. He doesn't respond to emails. You have to teach yourself through the extensive amount of reading he assigns. He doesn't know how to teach and he doesn't make sense.
I am glad that I took four classes with Prof. Otunnu. He is an excellent prof: clarity, critical engagement, assistance to students, academic rigor, etc. As I join Northwestern to complete my graduate work, I will take his course on Forced Migration at NW. Students who do not get good grades because the instructors just hand them such grades--will
Absolutely the best professor, though a very hard grader.
I took Prof. Otunnu's class in the summer. I will take his classes again and again. He is at the top of his profession. DePaul needs more professors like him. Prepare to work hard in his class and follow his lectures and readings.
He is one of the worst professors I have experienced at DePaul. He does not seem to be a honest and good person either. A lot of people in our class had problems with him. I think DePaul needs to evaluate him because he is making the school look bad.
Otunnu is a brilliant man and hes teaching style is unique. Don't expect his class to be like others that you have taken, because the structure will be fundamentally different. If you can reconcile with that difference initially, then you will substantially evolve your critical and analytical skills and perceptions in her course.
I am a History major and I found this class to be oen of the worst examples of the History department at this school. I was very unimpressed with the readings he chose and how he used them. I worked my ass off in that that class and I would ahve dropped it if I could.
Best professor ever!!!
I took hst 131 and hist 241 with him. He teaches extremely well and demands and expects a lot from his students.
Otunnu is an AMAZING prof. He is very intelligent, has an interesting background, and is willing to work w/ students if you put in work, too. You must work very hard in this class to get a good grade. Students who expect to get an A just by showing up will do poorly in this class. Take Otunnu he will challenge you but you will get so much out of it
Professor Otunnu is one of the most engaging Professors I have ever had. Guy is remarkably intelligent and skilled--you'll be reading some complex material that he breaks down in class. If you want a class that won't bore you, but will engage you in your intellect and bring out the best in you, then this is the class for you.
He is an extremely intelligent person, but a huge let-down of a professor. Didn't allow anyone to get up or leave during class, for any reason. Doesn't allow questions until the very end of lecture. Didn't learn any of our names. Somewhat infantilizing. Lectures are confusing, tests are too- I got a good grade, but I regret taking this class.
Interesting class. Read the texts thoroughly and listen to his lecturers, and there'll be no reason to get a grade under a B. Discussion and questions are after the lecture so the class has a consistent pace. The guy is very specific with what he wants, so as long as you follow the directions, you're good. Also, you can use the bathroom. Just ask.
Just legit be up front if you need accommodations. Speak at least once per class. Exams are the easiest things ever. I don't get the bad reviews of him. He LITERALLY gives you the midterm and exam prompts so there's no surprises! Just study and listen to his directions. The smoothest class I've had because everything is outlined.
Otunnu cares about his students and will make accommodations if you are upfront with him. Lecture heavy but the information is actually interesting and I really enjoyed this class. Not a tough grader but you will have to put in effort. One paper, written midterm, and a map quiz. Not a hard class whatsoever. Only take if your interested in Africa.
Dr. Otunnu is a very engaging lecturer. You should definitely do the readings before each lecture since he will not go over them. He is very clear on how the grading is broken down, and answers any questions you have. He keeps the class over time, which is problem because I had another class 10 minuets after his ends.
History major here. Can tell you that anyone who has ever gotten a low grade and complained were 99% slackers in the class. Otunnu gives a ton of reading (it's a history class, what do you expect?), but his lectures break it down and he tells you word for word what he will test you on. An easy A if you actually care to learn and do your homework!
A GREAT professor. Although there is a lot of reading, he really helps you understand it in class. He replies to emails in a timely manner. He is also funny and kind.
Dude's a beast. Hell of a knowledgeable person, extremely straightforward with expectations and what to expect for tests/papers. He isn't hard if you actually show up to class and listen.
one of depaul's best, smartest, most caring professors ever. his lectures are woke af too
He is a very brilliant and inspirational guy, and I loved his lectures. You're graded on attendance and participation, then a midterm exam and a final simulation. The midterm and final were fairly easy, and I learned a lot in this class.
Professor Otunnu is a straight-forward professor and an interesting person. He knows so much about what he teaches and you will learn a lot from him if you listen. Even though he assigns a lot of readings/videos at times you can get by with skimming. His online workload is extremely manageable and clear, not difficult to do well in this class.
His class only consisted of 6 papers, I wanted to learn about African History but instead only learned about problems in Africa. His online lectures are boring, as well.
Wish it could have been an in-person class instead of online, he just posted the work and had us write 6 essays, nothing else! Felt very detached but easy class if you don't mind doing 6 essays, not a super hard grader too! Class was pretty much only about African colonialism though, kind of disappointing!
DONT TAKE OTUNNU. for this class you have to watch the lecture videos he made from a microphone that he speaks in to and documentaries on youtube that are an hour and 30 minute+ videos. Some videos got deleted on youtube so he said to improvise. Have to turn in 4-5 pages every other friday about what you learned. he has a thick accent as well AVOID
This class is not what it seems to be. 6 assignments to do, but the material for this class is absolutely absurd. Very long documentaries and long readings, along with lecture videos which are hard to watch. Syllabus is very confusing, and overall a very sloppy class to take. I dropped a couple days after being in the class, not worth it at all.
This professor was so unorganized. There was always a lot of documentaries and the lectures were long and boring. We have to submit papers to his email which I think is not a good idea. This class was not engaging at all. The papers that we had to write were boring and there was nothing interesting about it. I would never take his class again.
Professor Otunnu is an incredible professor with high knowledge of both wisdom and great studies.
Otunnu is a peaceful professor who cares deeply about the material he teaches. His passion is contagious through his lectures and he provides a safe place for students to ask questions. I was going through a rough patch academically and he helped me stay engaged and do well in his class. He is thorough and his classes need to be taken seriously.
VERY nice man--I like him a lot, but not as a professor. His syllabus is very confusing, and he doesn't explain assignments well, and then gives you points off for things he never included in the syllabus. Also, he taught 10% of the time, and had students teach the other 90%, so I didn't learn much because no one knew anything about the subject.
Async. You need to complete a total of Four Reaction papers (6-7 pages in length), with some having a week in between them in terms of the due date. Lectures span an average of an hour so get ready to write a lot of notes. Also, I might add that his D2L page is not the best in terms of organization... Beware of his thick accent.
LOVED the lectures and the topic (world refugee crisis) but i could never get over a certain grade on the papers no matter what i tried. 4 long papers for the entire class and thats it
