He's brutal. Hard to understand and will dock you marks if you ask him questions. I highly suggest switching sections if this is your lab prof.
Couldn't understand a word he says. Not very helpful at all during lab help. I strongly recommend you get out of this lab class if you are currently enrolled in it. Believe me!
His marking is ridiculous, How in the world do you get minus marks, if its wrong its 0 not -4. Horrible teacher
Akwado was alright, nothin' special. The idiot before however doesn't realise the "-4" on his page is subtracted from his total mark ex. if an assignment is out of 10 and you get a 0/3 on a question, that -3 signifys 10 - 3. All in all, didn't answer questions well and his pre lab lectures were useless
This teacher is what I like to call, ridiculous. I cant even count how many times people complained that they had minus marks on there assignments. He not only gives you a 0 but will still dock marks if you dont have the correct sigfigs. He is hard to understand and does not teach things well at all. GET OUT WHILE YOU CAN!!!!!!!!!!
This prof uses notes from another prof and it isn't even worth going to class! You can buy the notes he uses and stay home and read them yourself.
HE DOES NOT LIKE TO HELP, IF YOU ASK QUESTIONS HE IS NOT HAPPY TO ANSWER THEM AT ALL, HE EXPECTS YOU TO KNOW EVERYTHING, IF HE CAN CALL YOU STUPID HE WOULD. NEVERMIND THAT HE IS A CRUEL MARKER. LIKES TO TAKE AWAY MARKS LEFT AND RIGHT. ONCE HE SAID U ONLY HAVE 3 Q TO ASK. SO IF U HAVE THE FORTH TOUGH LUCK!
He is very helpful, except he talks really slow and monotonous sort of.
He is somewhat hard to understand and follow, and he may seem harsh at first. But if you stick with him, he becomes quite friendly and helpful. If you're serious about the course you'll do just fine. plus he's an easy marker compared with many others instructors.
He was an excellent lab prof. very interested in helping his students and kept a positive attitude throughout the course. He made it known, however, that attendance was mandatory and he would not accept lateness.
check your tests for missing marks... not that he will change it anyway.
He doesn't speak English. That's all I would say.
Impossible to understand, doesn't like to help or answer questions.
All he does is read straight from the Chem notes that you can buy at the book store, and will add extra explanation to them. He makes things simple to understand. However, exam questions were examples straight from the notes taken in class so it is still helpful to go. Willing to help, but sometimes doesn't understand what you are asking him.
Okwado is funny prof (even his name sounds funny) and he's really helpful if you ask him questions. But the prelab lectures were sometimes boring
The class is easy if you read the lab in advance and do your work efficeintly, the labs take the full time and if you don't work you'll run out of time. It's hard to understand him most of the time because of his accent and he is also a quiet talker. He tries to make the class fun at least, and wants you to pass.
Horrible! Hard to understand, can't explain things well, help is tough to get with him. Also you can't email him because he will never answer your emails.
Horrible prof and not recommended to anyone! Stay away!
Kind hearted man but just not a very good teacher. Confuses the class and gives exams he doesn't prepare you for. The course itself isn't too difficult, but Okwado doesn't really prepare you for how he grades you. I would recommend a different instructor unless you're keen to figure a lot of stuff out by yourself.
He is a nice professor who does help if you ask him the right questions. He wont just give you the answers. The labs are really self explainatory but he does a quick demonstration to help show you what to do. Sometimes his english is hard to understand but usually it is fine. He is not the greatest but he is definitly not the worst.
I cannot do math so the class itself was very difficult to do. Okwado though is such a good guy, he gives many partial marks if he sees that you are not doing good on an exam. His accent makes him a little hard to understand but he is fun in class. Nothing wrong with him, may not like him at first but he does grow on you.
he uses terrible examples and often looks confused when he try's explains things. students often have to correct his mistakes in class. but in the end he will bump your marks to passing without you asking him :)
Terrible terrible lab professor!
He is hard to understand, but you can get used to it. He has a hard time with presentaions, and often stands there trying to think of what to say. You have to ask a question just right in order to get a glimmer of help, as he often misunderstands you. But, he wont just give you the answer, he helps you figure it out on your own. NOT RECOMENDED
He is a lot of fun!
Terrible teacher. Lectures were all over the place, I found him vague and incomprehensible. Especially if you struggle with Chemistry, DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. After the midterm about 60% of my class dropped it.
He is a great prof he demonstrates every lab before you do it yourself and he answers every question you ask him. He marks pretty easy and he is very friendly and always has a smile on his face. The only thing is his accent its a little hard to understand but after you have been in his class for a week you can understand him. Just listen carefully!
Terrible Teacher, i went into the final with a good grade and studied his "review" which none of the questions wre on. I HAVE NO IDEA WHERE HE GOT THE QUESTIONS FROM THE FINAL!! HE NEVER TELLS YOU WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW JUST A BUNCH OF INCOMPREHENSIBLE BABBLE AND THEN HIS TESTS ARE NEAR IMPOSSIBLE. I Seriously think if you value your GPA stay away
Just reads the notes off the powerpoint all class.Very few examples and does not know how to explain them. Does not speak english very well and is hard to understand.
Really hard class he just reads of the overhead, but he bumped me up to a pass.
Unfortunately it feel as though he is not interested in being an additive to student success. Although he is obviously smart, he does not go above and beyond the basics leaving any in depth learning to be done on your own. It truly downplays the importance of the lab and how applicable it is to the lecture.
He wasn't bad. It was a little hard to get past the accent at first, but over all he was pretty fun. He had interesting examples to support what was on the slide, and he let us write down the slide and then elaborated on it. Also, he's very personable. Even in the lab.
He is very hard to understand. He knows his stuff personally but isn't very good at teaching it. Would not recommend him. Though his midterms were very easy... You had to teach yourself everything.
He has an accent that's a little hard to understand but he talks slow enough and if you are unclear on something he will take his time to explain it to you. He's a great professor and I would definitely take his class again, he is a very nice man and cares about his students.
I thought he was a pretty nice guy and made some funny comments in class. He's a pretty chill guy and tries really hard to get students to participate. His exams are fairly easy if you study. If you don't study, you probably won't pass. If you study his notes you will do fine. He gets pretty much all his notes from the text.
although his lecture is boring but his note is really good. attend his class regularly then you will understand the lecture very well
Homework it self never is enough in any university course, do all the hard questions in the book and attend every class you will get a 4.0 in this class. Don't deviate from his lecture notes. DO THE PRACTICE EXAMS. He's a great proff.
Best prof you will ever have! Really funny too. Just ensure that you do the masteringchem assignments, because the midterms are almost identical to them. Two thumbs up for Mr. Akotski :)
This professor was personable and understanding. His midterms and final were right out of the notes and online assignments.
He is a useless Prof. He does nothing but leave you with zero understanding of the course and the only work to do is a mastering chemistry assignment online. He is absolutely useless
Good guy, need to listen really close because hes hard to understand. His tests are easy as long as you put in effort, straight from notes/workbook. Would recommend.
The definition of rough if you take Okwados class.
Okwado is an EXTREMELY nice person and individual however the whole language barrier prevents him from teaching efficiently and his lectures aren't that well done. He does try really hard though! Practice exams and questions from mastering chemistry and being intuitive during lecture is necessary for a good mark.
Very kind and helpful prof, I could ask him a million questions during the labs and he wouldn't have a problem. His accent is hard to understand but you will get used to it. One thing I like is that he takes a lot of time in the beginning of the class to demonstrate the lab for us literally step by step. Plus he's got some good jokes.
Reads his lecture slides verbatim. Gained more knowledge working through the slides by myself than from his teaching. Really monotonous voice and hard to hear through his accent.
Nice person but It is extremely hard to pay attention and understand his lectures. Very confusing and have to ask many questions in order to have a clue of what is going on. His online assignments are extremely difficult, for his class examples are fairly easy. You practically teach yourself the material. A tutor would be required for his class.
Hard to understand, not very helpful outside of class. Actually threaten to drop my mark lower when I questioned why he never gave me part marks while other students with the exact same awnser did. I personally had to learn everything online. He selects favorites and if your not one of them get ready for an awful semester.
If you want to save your GPA, I strongly advise you to avoid him unless you know what you're doing OR you are more than willing to put in extra time to learn the material yourself.
Avoid him at any cost. Not only his teaching is not helpful at all but also his marking system is not consistent as well.
Professor Oak is a true MAN! Great and amusing Professor :)
Dr. Akotsi is a really friendly teacher who is eager to help. He also likes to joke, which makes it easier to communicate with. Of all the teachers I've had for my fall term, I thought he was one of the most fun teachers to talk to when asking for help. P.s. I had him for a chemistry lab
Does not understand questions asked by students so then gives a unrelated generic answer that adds more confusion. Goes at an extremely slow pace such that by midterms you will not have even discussed half the required material needed for the test.
HE IS THE BEST TEACHER EVER! Man my mark ended up at around 90% in his class. great booster! The only thing hard in his class is his accent is a bit hard to understand and sometimes (not often) talks a bit fast. In the beginning of the semester, he was a bit rude and hard to ask him questions, but as he sees you improve and work hard, he helps you
He was a pretty good prof. He was really good at explaining concepts and provided good examples. However, his exams can be pretty challenging. Do his practice questions but focus on application. Look at the practice questions and come up with what other questions can be derived from the practice. He wants you to really understand what you're doing.
I took this prof in an intensive Spring semester and I regret it so much. When doing examples, he sets up the problem, does the calculations on his calculator and writes the answer. So when Im going over my notes trying to study, I have NO idea how to do the problems and this course is all calculation.
He is not interested in the the success of his students. Personally he knows his stuff, but is unable to effectively teach the content. Tests proved to be much more in depth and challenging than practice questions. Multiple calculations were done wrong during practice questions in class, causing further confusion.
He is not a good teacher at all. He makes his lectures way more confusing than they have to be. He would fail to answer any questions I had. He would not be in his office during office hours. I do not suggest this teacher at all! I had to read the entire textbook to understand what was going on. He only does one example of every difficuly concepts.
i love this brotha
Heavy accent, and a very quiet speaker, making him very difficult to understand. Lectures are not hard as they at straight from his notes which are all posted online. When answering questions he manages to leave students that knew the answer confused, completely lost if you didn't know the answer. Tests are much more difficult than examples or HW.
Very hard tests, very different from material taught in class... if you already struggle with chemistry avoid this prof at all costs... he complicates things way more than they are!! During this coarse I had to teach myself all of the material through the textbook. Mastering chemistry homework is very different from the tests. Avoid!!!
Has a very heavy accent, hard to understand. Even if you can understand him, he is not very good at answering questions; gives broad answer. His homework is online and requires you to buy, as a forewarning. Very helpful though.
He skims over the difficult stuff, and spends a lot of time on the really simple things learned in highschool. The class average was far lower compared to other profs, so his tests are hard too. 10/10 would not reccomend
He is very hard to understand in terms of speech and the way that he presents material. His exams are not fair, and not only are they not fair but he marks them very strictly. He will not go over any of the exam unless you force him to, and is not open to reason. i would not recommend him as a teacher at all. If you are enrolled I'm his class, drop
Avoid him at all costs! Homework is done online and can be very difficult. Midterms are hard and not fair. He also skims over the difficult topics and does not give good answers to his questions. Very strict marker as well, if you want a good grade in his class you definitely have to put a lot of extra work in to understand the topic fully.
Exams were not easy however, if you're willing to work hard you will get a good mark. Practice exams were helpful in preparing for midterms. Don't really need to attend lectures as he just reads from the board. Requires you to purchase master chemistry for assignments.
Okwado is a horrible prof. He may know his material but he cannot explain things at all, he is rude when you ask him questions, does no examples, only reads his slides and makes constant marking mistakes on his test. His accent is also extremely hard to understand. There were 6 people that I knew at ONE tutoring company because of him.
I don't understand why everyone is giving him such bad reviews. I think that chemistry is a difficult subject. Bad marks doesn't always bad prof. Attendance is not mandatory as all slides are on bb. Best part: midterm practice exactly like the actual midterms. He may not be inspirational but at least he's fair. Hoping final is also fair.
He's actually a really nice man. He's always willing to help you out if you're struggling. May not be the best professor but he's not as horrible as some of these ratings claim he is. Practice Midterms are pretty similar to the actual ones, work hard and you'll get a good mark.
This is my first time ever rating a professor. Here I sit after his final examination, and I can only say one thing. WORST teacher to exist, he brings up new topics in exams.. WHO does that. He does NOT prepare you for exams. His midterms, unfair, final, hardest thing I've ever written. This is coming from a 4.0 student my first C- IF THAT. UNREAL
Chemistry is not an easy course. If you aren't willing to put in an effort, of course you won't get a good mark. He may seem rude, however he is a nice guy whose willing to help you out anytime. Does examples in class and practice midterms/finals that are very similar to the real thing. Online assignments are free marks.
Really don't understand all the hate. Can't expect to walk into university and have the professor transfer everything into your brain. Studying is key to have success especially in a class like Chemistry.
Dr. Akotsi is the kind of professor you want to avoid at all costs. His lectures are dry and confusing. When you ask him questions he looks at you like you're dumb and when he tries to answer it you're left even more confused. He is not effective at teaching whatsoever and his marking is VERY inconsistent. I had to get a tutor for his class...
To the the people defending the teacher. Let his averages of exams speak for themselves. Let his rating on rate myprof speak for itself. One or two people is understandable, 80% of rating say he's a bad teacher.. wake up.
Its funny how guaranteed most of the people bashing the teacher are the students who show up to the first class and disappear until the midterm and then complain about their bad grade and blame his teaching style. To the person saying his lectures are dry sorry but nothing about Chem 101 is exciting so suck it up its not his fault.
Just because you didn't get the grade you wanted doesn't mean you can scrutinize him for wearing the same clothes everyday. He might not be so well off as to have an unlimited wardrobe. Anyways, his tests did reflect what we did learn in class, and definitely not difficult if you took your time doing the practice exams he would post.
Professor Okwado Akotsi was a funny guy in class and he knew the material well. EVEN THOUGH he knows his stuff, I would not recommend him if you are not the greatest at Chemistry. I understand teachers are not suppose to spoon feed you the goddamn course but a better teacher will help you learn the material better and Akotsi isn't that teacher.
Really good lab instructor. Makes the material pretty clear before hand and walks you through the lab, answers any questions you may have. A bit quiet, so try not to sit next to the fume hoods if you want to hear. Marking of labs is frustrating at times, as he seems to give only full or zero marks/question, even if you just made one small mistake.
He spends the whole class reading word-for-word from his slides so there is no point in going to class. The examples he does are extremely basic. He spends half the lecture on a simple concept and then almost completely skip over important content. His exams are fair enough but unless you write down exactly what he wants to see you will lose marks
Professor Akotsi knows his material very well and most examples he did were taught well. The key is to pay very close attention in class to what he's doing on the board and saying. I thought the practice midterms really helped when it came to the actual tests and it is definitely reasonable to do well in this class with Akotsi as your professor.
He gives us our first quiz without any heads up. He is a very lazy prof and gets frustrated if someone asks him for help.
Just avoid at all costs.
Hard to understand. Impossible to learn from attending class alone, I learned 95% from the textbook.
I had him for my chem 101 lab and it was very hard to understand what he was saying. His tone changes from very quiet to somewhat loud making it hard to tell what he's saying. All assignments must be done in pen otherwise you won't receive a mark. Other than that he's a decent teacher, he understands the concept and explains it very well.
He is not good at explaining. You have to read your manually heavily
I feel bad giving Okwado a bad review because he seems like a genuine and nice person but just isn't a very good professor. He is very quiet and is hard to understand. Very tough grader too. I'd suggest taking a different prof unless you are confident in chemistry!
Nice guy, bad professor. You can download his chapter notes and read the chapter yourself in about an hour where as it would take him 4 lectures to just read the slides to you. Just study from the textbook if you have him as a professor.
Just do yourself a favor and avoid him as a prof. Just avoid.
Okwado is a really nice guy that means well. However, he is not very good at explaining things at lab if at all. Wouldn't recommend taking the course in the spring either. The only reason I got the mark I did was Youtube videos and reading the manual over and over. Advance study assignments help A LOT as well. Don't rely on his teaching.
Avoid taking his lab section, could barely understand him and he doesnt answer your questions well because he doesnt understand what you are asking. Makes you hand in your observations before you leave so you cant chnage it if you realize you messed up while doing your report. Cant stress enough to avoid this lab instructor.
explained labs pretty well and demonstrated them clearly. pretty lenient marker, but the quizzes are tricky. however, he does have a very strong accent and a lot of students found him hard to understand. and if you didnt know the answer to a question or asked him questions, he would get frustrated
I am a first year engineering student and Okwado is one of the few examples of extremely terrible profs I've encountered. He takes almost 2 hours out of our 3 hour lab talking and this is especially painful when it is an 8am lab. Despite spending all that time talking, the objectives and learning outcomes are not clear.
He just read off the slides and did not give much information outside of that. If you want to talk to him outside of class, do not email him, he tends to ignore them. It's probably better if you learn the content yourself.
Okwado is a decent prof, he definitely knows his stuff. He can be a little hard to understand, but his lecture notes and examples are straight forward as he goes through each example in a step by step manner. His practice tests are fairly similar to the actually exams! DO all the examples he gives you in class!!!
Worst prof in the whole school, he failed all the class. Doesn't bring anything from the practice midterm and super hard to understand him because of his accent. don't recommend taking his class at all.
I have him right now for my Fall semester and hes DECENT at best. He has a strong accent but dont get me wrong, he is understandable. Get ready to do your own studying because he comes in and just reads off the powerpoint slides. He does give examples every once in a while and he asks the class questions so Id recommend pre-reading the slides.
I already made a review in the start of the sem, but now its almost the end I wanna revoke everything I said about him. Okwado is the nicest guy ever. Ya his lectures might be a little boring but he makes sure you understand the lesson by giving practices and being accessible. As long as u show up and try, ull be just fine. Goodluck on ur sem :)
Couldn't drop this class is because I didn't want to become part-time. Okwado is a nice guy as a person, however I had a hard time with this class. Literally taught myself. Chemistry isn't my strongest subject, but the way this course is taught by him wasn't for me. Def. would not recommend, especially as an introductory prof. Classes became empty!
It took over a month to get my marks back, I did not get them until I was done with the final, even though I emailed him twice about it. He does not provide much help even when asked. I don't know the experience of in-class, only online, but it felt like he put the absolute bare minimum into this lab.
If you can change out of this class you definitely should. During the lectures, he reads the slides and will not do examples. If you ask a question he will likely reread the slide. He is a very nice person but it was extremely difficult to learn. The exams didn't have anything on them that he said they would and it was a struggle to get through.
For the spring term from June 1 to 18, the university decided to keep the class online, which isn't a bad thing, but the way he administered the exams was terrible. He made it so that once you submitted an answer to a question, you could no longer change the answer and you were stuck with whatever you had put. Would never take this prof again
Dude doesn't explain anything and his lectures cover maybe 50% of what is required to do well on the assignments and exams. One of his chapter note packages covers not a single bit of relevant material for the assignments on the chapter...
Worst thing about him is that he refuses to take responsibility for his poor instruction. He's smart but lectures were very mediocre, and what's on tests are not the same as the material in the lectures. On top of that you never get enough time to do the quizzes/exams and you don't get part marks for anything. very poor onlinechemistry experience.
Hilarious? Hilariously rubbish. Hands down the worst prof at MacEwan University. The textbook is a joke because none of the chapters align with the sections you are being taught. If you thought the job exportation in the USA is bad, think again, this man farms his class off to the evil overlords at Pearson who make you sell your soul for grades.
Akotsi was a subpar teacher. He is a very poor teacher when it comes to lectures and only goes through the slides. Please fend for yourself in this class. You will be teaching yourself.
Dr. Akotsi cares about his students and is very knowledgeable in chemistry. I struggled with the class, and the lectures were a bit dry and he talked very slow, but otherwise an okay professor. Chem 102 is very difficult overall so make sure you stay on top of things. I took this in june.. it was brutal. Do not take chem in condensed form.
PLEASE I AM BEGGING YOU AVOID THIS CLASS AT ALL COSTS. HE DOSEN'T ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS!!!!. HE DOESNT TEACH BUT READS OFF THE SLIDES THE MIDTERM REVIEW IS NOT WHAT YOU WILL GET ON THE ACUTALLY TEST NO PREPARATION AT ALL. THE CLASS AVERAGE WAS A 58 WITH ONLY 5 PEOPLE IN THE 80s EVERYONE GOT BELOW 60!. RUN AWAY!!!! TRANSFERRING TO U OF A...
Okwado's chem lab was interesting class to say the least.. I cannot recall learning anything from this lab as he spent little to no time lecturing which made this course harder than it needed to be. The material itself isnt hard and he does not mark hard either, he never explained any of the concepts to us. not the worst prof but far from the best
Don't take him! He let the material teach itself. Every lecture I went to could've been better used by reviewing the material myself on my own time. I would strongly suggest switching profs
Honestly the worst professor I have ever. Showing up to his class is pointless because he doesn't cover anything. His lectures are so dry. I have never struggled so much in a class before. If you can avoid this professor, I highly suggest it. Words cannot explain how terrible he is. I thought I should give him a chance and ignore the ratings, don't
Dr. Akotsi only reads from the slides. So, it is better to just self-study. His exams are hard and put question types that are never discussed in class.
He is a very nice guy. Exams are similar to the review materials.
Just no! Akotsi reads off the slides word for word, does not answer your question or clarify properly instead makes it even more complicated so don't bother. The only reason why I passed this course was due to my lab mark and youtube videos that helped me understand the material better than Akotsi!!!
Tests are brutally hard, make sure to do practice regularly before tests. Not impossible to pass, but not a cakewalk by any means. Didn't interact with him much myself, he explained the material well enough for me save for a couple things I had to look up.
Dr. Akotsi has mediocre lecture material, and if you're not strong in chemistry, lectures are best supplemented by the textbook, Mastering Chemistry, and/or Youtube/Chegg tutorials if you want to do excellent. He was supportive in office hours and helped with the understanding of the material. I put in average effort and received an average grade.
Inorganic Chem- Lectures SOMETIMES cover material that helps with homework/tests. Tests are fair, and most of the questions asked are a variation from the given list of homework. But then again, lectures do not fully cover what is being asked in the homework. Self study is a must.
Just avoid HIM if you can. Not really good at explaining concepts with the fact that chem 102 is not an easy course so it was just a recipe for disaster. If possible just avoid this course lol.
This was a professor that I had for Chem 102 Lab but NOT for the lecture. For my peers who had him for the lecture, I heard terrible reviews, so I would not recommend him for the lectures. HOWEVER: take him for the labs, as he is a very easy marker, if you do not understand how to do something you can make an appointment where he explains clearly.
He is very detailed with his explanation. He teaches at a slow and understandable pace
Just reads off slides. From what I have heard there are much better options than this guy for the lecture
Dr Akotsi has rather boring lectures but detailed slides that are useful for exams. He also gives a study guide thats almost exact to the midterms and final. He is rather confusing at times but very sweet and tries to explain the concept in the most simpliest form. You can skip lectures and just read slides if thats what your into and still pass.
Does not explain concepts very well. I found myself learning some theory in labs that was never discussed in the lecture. Would not recommend taking his class.
Akotsi's lectures can be dry, but his detailed slides and study guides make up for it. With some self-study using the textbook and resources like unstuckstudy, you can do well in this class.
His low rating is deceiving. He's such an easy marker, got 100% on every lab. He was hard to understand but and not best teacher but idc, this class a GPA BOOSTER. I had him for chem 102 lab. if u want a grade booster take him, easiest A+ ever.
He's a nice guy, honestly his lectures are boring but they're doable so that's that. His final was very hard, second midterm was quite hard too. Good luck cuz I failed that shi
His lectures are boring but put in the work and the material is not too difficult. Just don't procastinate. The first exam was EASY very similar to his practice, but the second midterm was AWFUL. I suggest reading the textbook and getting comfortable with questions then you will be fine. He is available for help, accent is a bit tough to understand
I had this professor for my chem 102 lab. Majority of the time he would end up doing the entire procedure through the first hour of the lab which left us with only 2 hours to do the experiment. I do not recommend this professor at least for the lab portion unless you want to stay all 3 hours of the lab. It is also sometimes hard to understand him
Accent is sometimes hard to understand. Helped me a lot whenever I faced problems in the experiment setup or don't understand something. Very strict in grading on Crowdmark.
Took a lot of time from the lab to do the entire procedure himself leaving us with not a lot of time left to do the lab leaving us stressed. They used a new platform for some of the post labs which was good because you got your grade back right away. Took way too long to grade stuff (3/4 of the assignments weren't posted until after the lab final.
