He has a russian accent but since the beginning of the year being able to understand him has gotten a lot easier. I had experience in calculus before the class so it was not too difficult for me. He is very helpful during his office hours. He can teach concepts very well, he just doesn't always know the best way to explain it.
I did not have Prof Makarenkov but I frequently attended his office hours for help because he is able to explain hw and concepts quickly and clearly. His accent did not affect my learning. He paid attention to what I was doing well on and notified me on what I may need to practice more and this helped me organize what to study more.
He had an accent, but it wasn't to the point to where one would have difficulty understanding his words. However, he still had a bit of trouble communicating certain aspects of the course content. His quality improved over time during the course, but it still definitely leaves much to be desired. He was actually really nice and very approachable.
His Russian accent is a little hard to understand at first, but I got used to it pretty quickly. He kinda teaches differently from the way I was taught in HS (more complicated), but he is VERY willing to help and tries to help his students succeed.
Oleg is a very nice guy, and he is a very good professor. His lessons are slow which make the concepts easier to understand. He is not hard to understand like other people have said, and he does his best to help you succeed. I like Oleg he is chill, and he doesn't really take attendance which is also chill.
I think Oleg is a really swaggy teacher... I suck at math, but for some reason, he made me understand it?? His eyebrow game is hella strong.. but that's beside the point. He was super swaggy and helpful you should def take his class. Don't let the Russian accent throw you off, it's not as bad as you all say don't hate, just appreciate! thx Oleg :-)
If I can describe Oleg in one word - Swag. Ok, so he may mess up a lot. And yes, he may not be very good at teaching, but in the end his fresh steeze makes up for it. Based God Oleg is very chill and deserves to have the highest of ratings. And his eyebrow game? On point. Highly recommended.
Oleg tries to teach by starting off with a really hard example instead of starting on smaller ones that build upon each other. This makes things quite hard since you cannot properly do this difficult problems without a foundation in basics. He also struggles with explanations of the material and he has an accent (very understandable though).
He has problems properly explaining the concepts. He knows what he is talking about but has a hard time telling his students in a comprehensive way. He also makes a lot of mistakes which is frustrating. He starts on way too hard of problems too.
The only problem with Oleg is his English proficiency. But this was his first semester, and I think he can eliminate this drawback. Overall, he is so friendly, helpful and has great knowledge. If you want to study Math, give him a shot.
Literally moves mountains with his teaching. If I could choose to be one person in the world I would choose to be Oleg. He is way too chill for words. You go Oleg.
Oleg is the Mr Miyagi to my Daniel San. I was blinded to math but now I can clearly see. Rock on Oleg. Highly recommended if you want to be successful in life.
Hands down the best math professor I've had. His willingness to help students cannot be matched. He makes sure that every student understands the concept before moving on. I would definitely recommend professor Makarenkov to anyone taking this course!
Oleg goes above and beyond to help students. He sends notes through email each week. He responds to email and is easy to meet with during office hours. He's very laid back and nice. The course strikes a nice balance between a hands on and hands off approach. Expect the majority of the content to be self-taught through reading the book.
Takes a couple of weeks to get use to Oleg's accent and presentation style (uses overhead to project graphs on white board and draws on them). The man goes way beyond requirements in offering out of class opportunities to learn/review material. I would take another class taught by him.
Excellent teacher. He explains new concepts in a way that the class can easily adapt too (his accent isn't that bad and takes probably a few days getting used to). He genuinely cares about the students and is always looking out to help. The exams are a little hard but if you go over past quizzes/homeworks it isn't that bad. Solid calculus professor
Thank you for all this lessons at switched systems S15!
Great teacher, however, you do need to go to class in order to do well on tests. Problem sections tend to fill you in on major ideas and concepts but his lectures will fill in the steps to get to the answers
Calc 1 is supposed to be slightly more difficult than diff/integral calc so don't be scared. His accent is a little hard to understand but you get over it in a week, its been getting better overall anyway. His office hours are open almost all the time. Under him, I only had trouble learning one topic throughout the semester. Eyebrow game on fleet
Professor Makarenkov is the best math teacher I've ever had. The entire class adores his enthusiasm for math and helping us become better mathematicians. His lectures are very organized - they're even color coded, and if you ask him a question he'll answer you clearly and happily. I probably wouldn't show up to class if not for my love of Oleg.
Lectures are pretty clear and he can make you crack a smile, but overall pretty boring. He makes quite a few math errors that students almost constantly correct him on, but he does teach the material well.
I didn't take any calculus in HS, so I wasn't sure how I would do with 2417 as my first semester of math. Professor Makarenkov made the class as easy as it could possibly be. He tries to teach everything that will be on the HW/tests, and any mistakes he makes during lecture shouldn't be too important if you're actually paying attention, anyway.
For the most part this class was understandable, even for someone who didn't take calculus in high school. Some of the topics can be difficult to understand with the way he teaches them (specifically u-substitution) but most are generally understandable if you attend class.
Oleg is approachable and genuinely wants students to do well. His lectures may be confusing at times- he does not have memorized list of integral rules + trig sub, but these can be easily found/derived He has a quirky humor and does make mistakes in class so point it out and he will correct it (don't be afraid of him!)
He is an adorable man who tries his best to help everyone understand. He sends out frequent emails to further explain examples he does in class and makes an effort to make himself available for students. Oleg makes an effort to also help in giving points back on a test if a grader graded too harshly. 10/10. Love him and his class.
Oleg is one of those professors who really wants his students to succeed. He can teach the concepts really well and oftentimes will show how to solve certain problems in different ways. He's also excellent at sending his students emails to keep them informed. Although attendance isn't taken, you'll understand the material much better if you attend.
I am taking him right now and even though he can be a little hard to understand at times, he is absolutely brilliant. Really caring and wants you to learn. I would definitely take his class again!
Math is not my strongest subject but usually with some effort I've made A's. This class might be the end of that. I don't find the lectures helpful. He goes directly from the book and spends so much time on theory that when I comes to the actual homework I don't know how to accurately apply it. Just head straight to Math Lab. They are amazing.
Makarenkov is an amazing professor. He is incredibly intelligent and although he teaches from the book, it ensures that if you miss a class you can still pass, but also that you are staying on the correct curriculum track as well. He prepares you for exams, what is covered on the homework, quizzes, and THQs.
Friendly professor that is very approachable. Don't be afraid to ask question, because he won't bite you. Class lecture heavy, but all you need is clear notes and you should be fine on the THQ. Accent was hard to understand at first, but you get used to it. Though sometime, he would take a long time on a single solution which can be done quicker.
Professor Oleg is the greatest math teacher I have had to date. I have never struggled with math, but the way he teaches in his lectures makes everything easier to understand. I would highly recommend him to any that has the option to take him.
Professor Makarenkov is a great professor. He wants you to learn the material and be active in his class. He does not pick on anyone, but he does wait for students to participate. He makes small mistakes at times, but nothing that is major. He find ways to help students digest to material and sends additional emails to help.
I didn't even have him, but I showed up to his lectures regularly and went to his office hours because my own professor was too hard to understand. He really tries his best and sits there during his office hours, just waiting for students to show up. He is hilarious too, and honestly, I can't see why some people don't respect him.
I loved him. He's always available during his office hours and even other times when convenient for the student. My friends and I were able to get help from him every single Tuesday without fail. Some of whom skipped their own lectures to attend mine. He's very through and his lectures are structured to assure that the student can complete all work
Oleg is a good instructor. He goes very in depth in his teaching examples, but sometimes this can be to a fault because it can get very confusing. He likes to focus a lot on theory, which isn't really necessary for the course, but it shows his passion for mathematics. You can tell he loves mathematics and he cares about his students.
By far the best math professor I've had at UTD!
I freaking loved this professor. He was kind and approachable and cared about students. One of the best professors I've had for a math class. He made the material easy to understand and developed the theory so you could then apply it to hw/test questions. Weekly quizzes in the prob section count as 20% of your grade so do not skip the prob sec!
available outside of class, don't like students talking , he wants to answer all the questions himself, help in the exams and what is going to come.
He is by far the best math professor you can take! He doesn't cover that many examples in class, but the ones that he covers, he makes sure to go slowly and clearly so that everyone can understand it. He is a great lecturer, lots of laughs too.
Great Professor, probably one of the best I've had at UTD. Will give you every opportunity to learn the material. The material isnt very hard as long as you dont fall behind. Will also make himself available outside of class if you need the help.
So much fun in his class, he is very thorough and will not continue unless all questions are answered, he is very quick to reply to emails (often first thing in the morning is when he starts to reply) and very well mannered, he has great respect for what he does and for your education and wants you to get the most from his class.
This professor is fine if you're skilled in calculus. But if you aren't, like me, a professor with more accessibility, better teaching skills, and less of an accent barrier might be better for you. Math classes at UTD however depend a lot on the student's willingness to put in work though, so Makarenkov isn't a poor choice.
Dr. Makarenkov really helped me get the grade I wanted in this class. I had a lot of absences due to health issues, but he was always super willing to schedule times with me to go over material outside of class. He really does his best to make sure you leave every meeting with a clearer understanding than when you came in. Great prof!
Took him back in 2016 but I still clearly remember how helpful he'd always been regarding not just coursework but all facets of furthering education at UTD. Really great professor and, in my opinion, something down-to-earth about him just made me feel really eager to learn in his lectures. Never had any complaints about the guy, so I do recommend!
Professor Makarenkov is great! He definitely encourages the participation of every student in the classroom by constantly asking for clarification after he completes problems. He will walk you through examples in office hours and during class if the time allows. By constantly offering outside hours, he makes sure no student is left behind!
Dr. Makarenkov is the best professor for this extremely challenging course. Hes efficient, kind, patient, and very informative. He frequently went out of his way to make time for office hours for me and I really appreciated that. Very few professors would do the same. Hes patient as well if you dont understand something. Exams are very hard tho
He is an excellent professor that cares about his student's learning. The test can be difficult sometimes and lots of studying is going to be required, but he is easily accessible and is very helpful
He is one of the best teachers I have ever met in my academic life.
He will always help you IF you ask! As a grad student, I'm glad I took his course (math analysis I) because he actually helps you and wants to see you learn. I am not saying that other professors do not, but from my experience, others are just aloof to the need of the student. This one here, in my opinion, goes above & beyond, he wants you to pass!
Dr. Makarenkov was quite possibly the best math teacher I've ever had. He was so clear and organized in his lectures. He loves this subject and he clearly has a passion to teach. The thing that stood out the most was his quickness to reply to emails. I could email him a question on a Saturday night and get a response within 20 minutes. Five stars!
A wonderful professor. His approach to calculus and his teaching style (professional, respectful, and not too serious) will help you build on your math skills and also keep you interested in the course. Plus his setup for online lectures was great!
Honestly one of the best teachers Ive ever had. Its obvious he cares deeply for his students, and takes pride in teaching. He is extremely funny and approachable. Have a question about grading? He will help you out instantly. He prepares us very well for class and is an amazing teacher, and more importantly an amazing person. Will take him again!
Professor Makarenkov, is someone who is always there to help if you ask. His lectures are in depth and go along the lines of the CalcChat textbook, so having that is helpful. He genuinely wants you to succeed and will be there whenever you have any questions.
He is very passionate in making sure that the topic he is teaching is clear. He looks for feedback from you as he is discussing theorems. Every week there is a homework assignment, but its nothing crazy if you are keeping up with the class. I would recommend him if you are deciding between two classes.
good prof, good class
I loved taking this class. Oleg was extremely accessible outside of class and was very helpful with making sure we understood the material before moving on. I also felt that he graded very fairly and looked for understanding and hard work. The only complaint I have is that the final was pretty overwhelming. There were too many proofs.
Following the abrupt shift to fully online formats from the COVID-19 pandemic, Professor Makarenkovs online lectures were the best out of all of my classes. His lectures felt like in-person ones and were well constructed with examples to help learn the new material. Watch the lectures, do the assignments, and youll pass as easily as youll learn.
have wonderful online teaching skills. highly recommended
commenting on online teaching: Professor Mankarenkovs online lectures where easily the best of all my classes since the start of online classes. The lectures made me feel as though I was in a regular in-person lecture.
Professor Makarenkov is an awesome professor! He's really nice and understanding, and explains everything very thoroughly!
Commenting on online teaching: Oleg seemed pretty comfortable using presenting software in his online lectures. It was clear what he was talking about with his mouse as a guide and he was still visible to see himself talking as well. Much better than most professors with regard to online teaching.
Professor is learned, very patient and will take efforts to make you understand. He doesn't shy away from doubts and will often give more one on one time than the duration of class. Homework is little overwhelming and you will have to read lot of material to do it yourself. I felt exams were relatively easier than homeworks. Syllabus-explicit
This man was the absolute goat. The class material was kind of hard to me but that was honestly my fault. Oleg is a very understanding and caring lecturer. Highly recommend.
Dr. Makarenkov is a very sweet professor. He answers emails fast, regardless if you email him late at night. He is always willing to review topics during class or in office hours (he even met with me online over the weekend to help me with some topics). He understands that what he's teaching is difficult and is very patient with his students.
Oleg gives great lectures and cares about your success. Exams were difficult, yet quizzes were straightforward. I personally found this class very difficult and disorganized. If you're a math/physics major, take Oleg, but if not, you're better off taking differential equations at community college.
Took this prof in Fall 2022. One of the best Differential Equations professors out there. I struggled with this class with a different professor the semester before. If you involve yourself it becomes a fun and interactive class. Great professor. My favorite class that semester.
His lectures were clear, and the most helpful resources to succeed. This is a tough course, but this is the best teacher to take you through it. the Hw is not graded, however theres one per 10 days, and its short. Skip the Hw? only if you have a better method of studying, and you will study to pass.
Dr. Makarenkov is one of the nicest professors at UTD. The class, however, is extremely difficult, but passable with enough effort. Homework is not graded and there are 3 exams in total, as well as 8 quizzes. The quizzes get harder towards the end, and the exams (especially the first one) can be extremely hard if you are not good with integration.
Fantastic professor. Prepares you for exams well. He makes mistakes in class but doesn't take himself too seriously, and is genuinely willing to help you outside of class if you're stuck. Class is grades solely on quizzes and exams, but if you do the homework you'll be golden.
Oleg is an amazing professor, sometimes the accent gets a bit in the way but I have no problem understanding him. He does a very good amount of examples in class to make sure you know what to expect. He also does exam reviews during the lecture before exams which are really helpful. Overall a really friendly and great professor.
The structure of the course is really good, the exam questions are little bit challenging and I prefer the exam with the select questions from the list for the exam, as it can test whether the student understand the knowledge or not.
Oleg is a very kind professor who is clearly very passionate about his work. He tries his hardest to ensure everybody in the class understands what is happening. He usually will go about deriving the different concepts first and then go over in-depth examples. If you can, I definitely recommend Oleg for math2420.
I think that if you want to spend all of your time outside of class teaching yourself the material, Then for sure take Oleg. His lectures are not clear, he gets caught up and confused in his own questions. I learned more in this course from my TA and from the internet than him. Worst professor.
Great professor, his lectures are in depth and are much more simple compared to other professors offering MATH 2420. He has a Russian accent, but after the first week you will get used to it. Test heavy class, but Oleg is great at teaching tricks & questions to watch out for on the exam. Excellent professor, would recommend him over the other profs
Dr. Makarenkov was kind, accessible, and had a great passion for math. Sometimes his lectures were too conceptually heavy, but he solved lots of practice problems and went slowly and thoroughly. Made mistakes in class, but always open to feedback. Always responds to emails promptly. All in all, great professor.
Oleg is always willing to discuss with students, and I believe students will obtain some useful insights in maths if they pay attention in class.
A very kind professor who knows how to lecture well. Goes through theory first then applies it to practice problems. He is also very generous when it comes to final grades. Take Oleg if possible.
Professor is funny and accessible. Homework is just for practice (not turned in), short quizzes after problem section, and tests allow you to omit 1 question. The class moves painfully slow, lectures are alright but not great, and the professor is slightly too mistake heavy. However, his class was for the most part easy. Textbook is not needed.
He is goatttttttedddddd asf. If you have any questions, emailing or visiting his office hours is beneficial. He is very funny and overall a great professor.
An overall great professor who is very knowledgeable about the subject matter. Course is very test heavy (70% of grade is split between 3 tests). The other 30% is split between quizzes. The tests/quizzes are not too difficult to prepare for as the professor thoroughly explains the contents found on these assessments.
Professor Makarenkov clearly cares not only for his proficiency within the subject matter but also the success and well being of the students taking his class. He has thus far been the best math professor I have taken at UTD and I would highly recommend taking his class to everyone. It is not a blow off class by any means so study early and often
Incredible professor. Great lectures but aside from that, he is extremely understanding and flexible. He is ready to evaluate when a student finds something on the graded content which is unfair in an incredibly timely manner. Overall, amazing professor. Note: be sure to ask him questions in class if you need elaboration so you don't get lost!
Very informative lectures; instructor is on time and attentive to the material. Even though material gets posted, it's still best to attend lectures. Please, do not fall behind .... from personal experience lool; the material is very accumulative. If you truly understand each theorem, getting through the class isn't to bad.
Professor Oleg is a great and entertaining instructor. He explains the material clearly, making quiz and exam questions easy to solve. He does make frequent mistakes but keeps the class engaged when students point them out. His Gru-like voice and occasional jokes add to the experience, and he wants everyone to succeed. Goated professor for diff eq.
