When I had questions for her, I would email her and she always responded in good time. She has a very strong accent and can be very difficult to understand at times. Her lectures are very long and I found it very hard to pay attention. I opted to skip most classes and teach myself the material from the textbook instead.
Very kind and responds to emails quickly with detailed explanations. Makes detailed lecture slides that helps students understand the theory better. Also she gave lots of examples during class that were pretty useful in midterms and the final, so its best to go to class. Overall a great prof!
Had some difficulty understanding her lectures due to a heavy accent but overall, a really great prof and excellent one-on-one. She cares about her students and their success, often giving general evaluation feedback as well as homework/practice questions to better prepare students for tests.
She had a heavy accent, so it was kind of hard to understand her. Despite that, she gave very good examples in class and was easily available during her hours, actually there to help you understand this hard course.
Was sincerely interested in students success and made sure materials discussed were understood before moving on. Was also accessible outside of class for questions.
I had her as a prof for my first semester of university. She wasn't a bad prof, however she was not amazing. I would say the run of the mill prof that supplements the textbook that you will need to read. If you struggle in chemistry you will need to put a bit more work by yourself if you have her.
The NICEST prof. Chem 1300 isn't a super easy course and if you have to take it - take it with her. She gives SO Many resources for you to improve, and EXTENSIVE study guides. She even knows a lot of her students by name and will reach out to help you improve. If you are struggling - it's not her fault , you just aren't studying enough.
From my high school life till now I haven't really found a better chemistry teacher than Dr. Olesya Fedoryak. The way she covers the whole syllabus is really amazing. If I take Chemistry as major then it will be only for her. If we had teachers like her then studies would've been much easier for us. I wish her maximum prosperity in the long run.
Olesya is the best prof I've had at the U of M. she makes chemistry very easy to understand. she provides supplementary reading but I didnt find it necessary she explained everything very thoroughly in lecture. one of the only profs who actually teaches FOR the students and their success, highly recommend for chem 1300
One of the best profs for first year chemistry. She really wants everyone one to succeed in the course and is willing to spend extra time on the topic if someone is unable to understand something. She is also easily accessible out of the classroom. Would highly recommend her for CHEM 13OO.
She's the sweetest, she genuinely wants everyone to succeed in the course.
The nicest chem instructor in the department. Genuinely cares and wants you to succeed. Ask for extra help, do all the textbook questions, genuinely learn from the mastering homework and youre set.
Iclicker and quiz questions are very similar in format and difficulty to exam questions. Gives lots of practice.
My favourite prof so far. The sweetest most caring lady ever. She truly wants all of her students to succeed. Since I'm doing it online, each CHEM 1300 prof takes turns making note videos and hers were the best BY FAR. She is very detailed and provides many examples. She's also more than willing to have zooms outside of class before tests and exams
Olesya is the type of professor who cares for her students' success. She answers most questions and is always open to lend a hand if asked. Although she is a great professor, a lot of time and work will be needed for CHEM 1300. Her lectures feel fast-paced and intense; if you see her during office hours, very chill. So much respect for her :))
She wants everyone to succeed. She takes her time to make sure a majority of students understand before moving on and is always available for questions. She expects you do learn outside of class and understand why during class and practice what you learned. Expect lots of iclicker questions.
This could be just me, but Professor Fedoryak had a slight arrogance about her. She definitely knew how to teach, but be prepared for lots of I-Clicker questions (I am so sorry). I found it super difficult to be engaged with the lecture for the full 75 minutes, so keep that in mind. The quizzes are easy, but lots of curveballs on tests and exams.
Great chemistry prof, and I hate chemistry! She's funny and wants you to succeed, will reply to emails quickly with lots of detail if you had a question. One downside is that she can be 'mean' in that she sometimes doesn't understand why the class may do bad at a certain question/topic/etc. Either way, it comes from a place of love, I think...
I had her in Fall 2019. I don't get how people like her. She seemed kinda stuck up and unapproachable, so I never went to her for help. Get prepared to teach yourself, that textbook is your best friend. I literally learned nothing from her lectures. Stay on top of the textbook reading and make your own notes, and maybe you'll get an A.
Fedoryak wants every student of hers to succeed therefore she is very willing to answer any questions. She responds to emails quickly and provides lots of extra help sessions. Lots of Iclicker questions during lecture. Preparing before the lecture by either reading over notes, watching videos posted or reading textbook was the key to my success.
I took CSKL 0100 over this past term and I cannot recommend professor Fedoryak enough. She has helped me immensely, thoroughly going over any problems until I understood. Personally, I like when heavier subjects are broken down over the course of the term so the tests arent so heavily weighted; just do the work that is assigned and ASK for help!
Dr. Fedoryak is amazing & always willing to help. she really wants everyone to do well & understand the tough concepts that are presented in this course. she also responds to emails within minutes which I loved. only down side is that she can sometimes race through lots of lecture slides extremely fast, but 100% would take a class with her again!
She's kind of scary at first but she really is a super caring person. Answers questions and helps all students and does a lot of practice questions in class which she goes over in detail afterward. Make sure to do the pre lecture videos and assignments because she doesn't always go over the info in class, she just sums it up and does questions.
One of the best professors! She is willing to answer any questions you have and help you if you do not understand. Majority of her lectures are just going over examples so reading the textbook and notes that she posts are very helpful. She is also very understanding and will do her best to help you. I recommend her 100%.
Dr Fedoryak was an awesome prof. Having first year online was difficult but she made it a lot easier by answering all the questions during class and made sure the class understood the material before moving on. She was excellent at explaining the material and overall made a fairly difficult course a lot easier.
She's understanding and wants the students to do well.
Great prof, she is super caring and wants everyone to succeed. Always willing to help and answer questions.
Professor Fedoryak did not seem so warm or kind in my experience. When students would get questions on I-clickers wrong she would raise her voice and get mad when she hadn't even taught how to solve questions asked. It was tough to stay engaged and she talked kind of loud. She did make me feel dumb when we got questions wrong.
Olesya is the best prof for chem 1300, she made a difficult course much easier. She gives you lots of tips and tricks and explains concepts so well, and follows the chat to answer every question. She also replies to emails almost immediately and is always helpful
She is very kind and explains the content really well. She is also very understanding especially during remote learning. I received emails very fast and/or at a reasonable time.
You will not find a better prof for chem 1300. In general chem is just a very difficult course to take, so it was very helpful to have someone who cared about students and making sure that they had the best chances of getting good marks. She was constantly posting homework questions to do that could boost your mark and help understand the content.
just the best
Dr. Fedoryak is a very considerate instructor. She truly wants each and every student to succeed. While the labs were a lot of work, she was always there to provide clarification to whoever needed it.
Responds to emails instantly although you don't see her much during in person labs
Solid prof who wants you to succeed. It helps you find your errors and always emails back promptly. You don't see her a lot because you work with a TA in the lab. Provides clear instructions on labs and any assignments. Can be curt with students if they have already answered the questions that they ask. Overall very solid prof, do recommend her.
They were so rude when we emailed them for questions about our marking. There were so many things that we just wanted clarification for but it was so clear that they were not looking forward to listening to our side and helping us out. They also responded in a way that was demeaning as though we weren't respectful while emailing them.
I took a lab course with her and I liked it. She is a kind person who really wants to help with material and lab reports. Visit all student hours and don't be afraid to ask and youll be fine.
Hands down the best prof in the chem department, she actually cares about her students and their grades, would definitely recommend to anyone that's taking chem courses and if you see her name pop up in anything other than chem courses that's fine, still take her she is most likely better than any other prof anyways. she should get a raise on god
She is a good professor, she is reasonable and responds very quickly to emails. She made a very difficult class a-lot easier.
For this course we had to complete a weekly lab (one week in person, the next week online) as well as a prelab quiz and a lab report. This was very time consuming, but as long as you watch the associated videos on Lab Flow it is not difficult. Dr. Fedoryak always responded to emails, even in the middle of the night and held weekly student hours.
I sent her an email asking about an extension after I got some due dates and rotation sections confused and she gave it to me but with a pretty rude/aggressive email where she angrily told me what I did wrong, which I was already aware and apologetic of. Not a great first impression and left a bad taste in my mouth,
Extremely rude over email (I was a receptionist and have good email etiquette). I was unable to attend a lab last minute (thx covid). Because i could not attend in person, i had to do the other rotation with online lab. Was given 2 days to do it (instead of a week) then she got mad when i asked for an extension. Had to do two weeks of labs in one.
Doesnt really teach any aspect of the course. All your learning is from videos or lab manual. Shes not too kind in some emails, ask a question and she will be passive aggressive for you not knowing. Only saw her once in labs and it was just so she could tell us not to ask for extensions.
Amazing prof. Biochem is a hard class, but she made it very understandable. Read all the notes provided and do ALL the practice questions. She is always willing to help, so go to her office hours!!! This course is a lot of work, but if you actively put in the work you will do great. Do NOT fall behind, you cannot learn this course overnight!
Dr. Fedoryak is an amazing prof! Biochem is a super tough course however, she made the content easy to understand. She is SUPER caring and she truly wants you to do well and understand the material. I HIGHLY recommend going to her office hours as she explains in detail practice questions! She goes above and beyond what I would expect from a prof!
Her lectures are average, she is very caring and will answer any questions you have. The class is challenging but, if you put in the work and attend her office hours, you will succeed.
Rude and passive-aggressive. I had trouble logging into our online coursework during the covid isolation so I went to her office for assistance. She basically just insisted I was lazy and making excuses when the whole problem was I didn't know how to access course material. Avoid at all costs, would never take again.
Dr. Fedoryak speaks very direct and wants you to figure out the answer for yourself. Despite her directness, she showed sympathy when I unable to complete the pre-lab quiz and assignment before the deadline due to an emergency. As long as you complete your work on time and well enough, you should be fine :) Good luck in this course, you got this!
lots of reports and tests, not a lot of time or feedback given
The only reason I did not fail this class was because I learned the material on my own time by myself. This professor was not very helpful and had very confusing lectures that did not correspond to her material. Definitely would not take this class with her again and I've had classmates say the same thing.
Very nice prof, always willing to help and accessible outside of class
I was initially scared of chem in general but Prof Fedoryak is very caring and helpful if you reach out for help. She gives extensions and opens more attempts for you on labflow if you actually communicate with her. Definitely want to take her again for future chem courses. Although you need to know the lab procedures and specifics for exam.
this was her first year teaching this chem course, and it was awful the average for our midterm (out of 150 students) was around a 40% the midterm was not curved. she would be great in sticking to teaching the lab. she is VERY hard to understand, and can be a bit rude at times when students ask questions. better to teach yourself the course
Very nice. Only issue was she didn't have office hours and was only available by appointment.
Olesya was pretty good. She is much nicer and way more helpful when you need help in understanding topics or changing marks in person compared to emailing her. She is EXTREMELY rude in her emails, but very nice in person if you have questions. She goes above and beyond to make sure you understand the topics.
She was super helpful during office hours and was very organized.
Chem 2700 is known as a hard course. Her explanations were clear and to the pt+ she adapted her teaching style according to our needs. Our class avg was very high too, showing she is a good prof. Her students hours were in a group in a room so I could hear everyone's questions and them hear mine; this reinforced my understanding. Pick her!!!
I think she only teaches this in the summer, but trust me, take her! I thought it would be super hard bc it's condensed, but it went so much better than when I tried taking it in the fall. She tries hard to make sure everyone understands and if you don't go to her for help! I think she is the best prof for biochem 1! just make sure to do your part!
I love her so much. Lectures are information dense, but she explains material so well. Don't be afraid to ask questions, she is great at answering them both in lecture and out of class. Gives many opportunities to learn in class. Fair tester and marker.
This is probably the worst professor I have ever had, she does not answer emails when trying to clarify questions for lab reports, takes large portions grades off for small issues, does not seem to care at all about students or how they do
DO NOT TAKE HER FOR CHEM 2720. She only handed out the first lab report's feedback after 4 lab reports were handed in. She has had this issue with multiple biochemistry labs. Grades lost on previous lab reports could not be made up. She doesn't tell you there are excels you need to hand in and only had a days notice to make up lost grades.
Very unfair at marking, especially for an intro biochem course. Doesn't reply to emails or grade appeals. Doesnt release lab marks until after the submission of our 3rd lab report. The grading rubric for lab reports were changed and are much harder than previous years, to the point where even some TAs state that its unfair.
Prof is pretty good by herself. However, the marking of labs are very unfair because the TAs mark them and they are randomized. Some TAs are good markers but other TAs have so many little things they look for that my TA never mentioned in class. Dont be surprised if your lab report got a 65 when your friend got a 97 even though you put more detail.
If you have a choice of a first year prof choose her! I started attending her lectures after seeing how horrible my original prof was and my grade significantly improved. She genuinely cares and will spend the time going over practices questions with everyone so we have a better understanding. The material is hard to learn but she makes it easier.
Great professor, hard material. She did an amazing job at guiding us through hard concepts via lectures. Seemed like she genuinely cared if we understood topics, and would go over them again if she felt like she lost us. I encourage you to attend all lectures, I slacked and missed a few and feel like if I had been there I might have faired better.
i wish all my future science courses are with dr. fedoryak! she simplifies the hardest concepts and makes the class a comfortable and fun place! the seats in her class are always full because everyone goes to lecture because they're just THAT good. take her.
Still one of the best profs I've seen. This class is a challenging one and marking is harsh but I get why it is hard since its biochemlab. I went to see her every office hrs and it helped. I asked her about lab reports etc, and it made me get very good marks in lab reports. She had office hrs everyday!!. Her exams are easy but finals is straining.
Heavy workload due in such a short amount of time. Marks on lab reports are easily taken off if you have a small mistake. If your lab TA isn't the best, it's going to be harder to pass. Get ready to learn material on your own unless your lucky and get a good TA who actually explains well.
Amazing prof. Explains the material well and is also very caring. But be prepared to study hard for a good grade because this course isn't easy.
I took biochem in the summer and Olesya was very kind. She explained things relatively well and made sure we understood the concepts taught. During the midterm, there was an outburst caused by a student and she handled it gracefully and mature and I respect that. Exams were very fair.
She's a good prof and wants her students to do well.
The instructor responds email very fast. But this course is heavily rely on self-learning.
Not very approachable and very direct. Tho, she would open back up lab reports for students if they made a mistake after submitting it, so that's nice.
Dr Fedoryak is great at simplifying concepts. Her use of iClicker as practice was great for clearing up understanding and preparing yourself for exams. Friendly and focused lectures.
Poorly run class, you teach yourself. TA responds to emails after due date, graded all assignments very late, I received a 45% on an assignment I got a 93% on, & Prof responded to email a month late. Assignment due in 2 days (not 3 like syllabus says). Insufficient notes, no lectures, just vague slides. Suggest: chem lecture w/ this & ask qs at uni
I want to add that although prof responded to my emails late at the end she usually responds very fast, she was nice, she listens to your concerns and you can go to her office and ask questions. She even opens lab in some cases where you made a mistake. And although I got graded bad on an assignment I got a higher grade on, she fixed it for me.
One of the best profs at UofM. Especially for chem lab courses. She is so caring and goes above and beyond to help students. Go to her office hours if you don't understand something. I wish she taught more chem courses!
Very good prof, I highly recommend. Tests are fair and assignments are graded generously.
this professor is heavy on the lecture notes if you have her make sure you do your quizzes and you pay attention in class not that hard but make sure to catch up of you miss a day and do not be afraid to email her
Prof Fedoryak was a great prof, going to her class was enjoyable as she's so sweet and funny. I found her tests to be pretty easy, and she was VERYY generous with grading. However the final was surprisingly difficult compared to the tests. She assigns lot of readings, but as long as you keep up with the work you'll be fine. It is lots of work tho.
I did not like her at all. Her grading system is completely random with no grading criteria, she returns assignments after 5 weeks minimum so any small mistakes you will make will carry throughout most of your assignments. Her TA's are not familiar with the material or experiments and are no help during experimental periods. Don't take this class!
The class was very well structured with lots of opportunities to do well and succeed in the course. She was super easy to talk to and provided very good explanations. She loves her iClicker questions but was actually helpful in learning the material. She was engaging and encourage us to ask questions before she moved on to the next topic.
I would strongly advise against taking classes her. She has no clear grading criteria and takes a minimum of 4 weeks to return assignments, resulting in the same mistakes being continuous throughout the semester. Our scientific presentation was due mid October and was not returned until Christmas. She does not care about her students/their grades.
This class was organized very poorly; there was very little grading criteria and often you will lose marks for not including things you didn't know you needed to include. She's very direct if you visit her during office hours, but she does know the material very well. If you want to do well, make sure you over explain everything in your lab reports
Grades came in weeks after labs were completed, often with little to no explanation to as to why marks were lost. The harder topics were not explained enough in the lab background. My friend lost marks for 'AI use' because she gave her answer in bullet points (so avoid that!). The final exam lab data was screwed up for most with no way to appeal.
I took this class the previous year and got a really bad prof so I ended up dropping it. I took it again the following semester with her and went from being absolutely scared of chemistry to actually enjoying it. Her use of iClickers I found very helpful for understanding concepts and she really focused on how to solve questions (i.e. calculations)
Very slow to respond to emails, as well as return graded work. Little or no feedback is given on reports. If you get a knowledgeable TA, you will be fine. Is very direct in emails and in person, sometimes coming off as a bit rude. The iClicker questions are very specific and not usually relevant to the lab or report. Also, forget grade appeals.
She is good, but there is no standard criteria for lab reports
she was extremly unhelpful and rude in emails, failing to help me get back on track and screwing me over for the rest of the course 0/10 never again
I had her as my lab coordinator and she wasn't a bad teacher at all, but comes off extremely rude both in person and over email. I constantly felt put down by her even when my questions seemed valid. It made it very difficult to go to her for help as a lot of the time I didn't even get help and I would just be ripped apart.
very accommodating for students and helps usually in all hours of the day- very accessible. knows what shes doing especially in the labs and is very clear and concise.
Just plane rude, does not like students
Very understanding and extended the deadline for my lab report when I needed an extra day. Just make sure you explain yourself in the reports and give as much information as you have from the labs to get good marks.
Just a rude person overall, dont take the class if you're looking to succeed
not very nice at all. my ta was good tho
Labs vary in difficulty but grading is pretty strict. Class sounds a lot scarier than it is. I had a panic attack in my final and Dr. Fedoryak was so sweet, she actually pulled me into another room and offered me a juicebox (:
Very unclear grading criteria, very rude and condescending when I asked a question, never responds to emails. Avoid at all costs.
her course lacks any clear grading criteria or rubric. shes also fairly condescending if u ask questions :(. Grades for lab reports come in extremely slow, and often have multiple mistakes that you'll have to email her about to get them fixed. TAs often don't have a good understanding of the topic either.
coordinator for this class, very hard to talk to and reach. Also not overall a very nice individual from what limited interactions we had. As for grades, they depend on which ta is marking.
technically had a TA for the whole thing basically and my TA was great, olesya on the other hand, on the few times i interacted with her, was very rude. i got told by my TA to do calculations a certain way then got marked wrong for it, and when i emailed olesya she said i should've not listened to my TA and there's nothing she can do about it....
I loved the way she used her iPad and Apple Pencil actually to write on the notes and found it quite easy to follow along. She had no problem answering questions people asked in class. Warning, though, is that when she writes equations, she does NOT fully solve them and skips steps, assuming you knew that already. I liked her, but TOUGH course.
Really good professor. Genuinely tries to help you understand the material.
Rudest prof ever. Hard to understand her accent
