He's got skills but I wish he would leave the drama at home.
Nice guy but doesn't have what it takes to be a good teacher.
Spending 40 hours on one piece is never good enough for him, he'll rip your heart out and serve it to you in his Michael Jackson jacket. When you're not looking for "Wefference" he's assigning stickers to you like you're a child. He pushes you to be better to the point of insanity.
Oliver is honest and he pushes you to be better. He's tougher on people he thinks are talented because he knows he can get more out of them and I like that. Once we get into the real world art directors aren't gonna hold our hands and try not to hurt our feelings, so better get used to it now.
You have to do things in his way or you are out!
He has been called a talented, obnoxious, egotist. Not by me you understand. But its been said.
He is a very difficult teacher unless you are 100 percent in this class as well as super talented. He gets kind of ****y when you don't do things exactly to his expectations. I read in someone else's review that he feels nothing in terms of art, I agree to an extent. I see that he thinks a lot of himself and of talented students, but what do you do, this is the industry, maybe he is just getting us ready!
He is extream for a teacher. You better come with your game on. He demands a lot from the students But if you take part in the class with questions, discussions and etc... he will go way out of his way to help you to become better.
Wow, I took his online class and it was a huge waste of my time and money. For every assignment I submitted, where other teachers would respond with valuble input and constructive criticism, he would only respond in incoherent, breif phrases for each. Like, "U did good here". Seriously. I had to email him multiple times and ask for better feedback
The teacher for this class is not a good teacher. He doesnt respect his students at all, he will show off his work and boast about himself plenty. If you take his class, never ask about how he grades he will get mad. Dont take this class, try to get another teacher.
Oliver is a very demanding teacher, attendance is required and he doesn't accept any excuses for incomplete work. But, you can make everything up if for some reason you fall behind and he has a very good eye for individual student progress. If you tend to be lazy and aren't really interested in illustration don't take this class otherwise, do!
Oliver is a very technical teacher he will teach you how to draw form but when it comes to any kind of creative freedom you will be stifled. He has no patience for students not showing progress in there drawing skills and he rarely gives positive feedback on work which can leave you feeling very uninspired. I recommend Dale or Carol instead.
Incredibly disrespectfu, put down studentsl. Will choose favorites then never help others in class. Annoying art director, not teacher. Critiques are not helpful. Will nitpick your assignment like crazy. No creativity allowed in his class, all work is made to look the same. Don't take his class.
As a teacher he is extremely disrespectful, attacks students, not students art, extremely harshly in front of class during critiques, refuses to work with students even when consulted privately, picks favorites without reason or basis, critiques art on personal taste rather than on learning, blatantly ignores the syllabus on multiple levels
I've had Oliver for 2 semesters. He can be demanding, but also very helpful. He has a low tolerance for absences & lack of effort. If you are trying and making some improvement, he gives nothing but encouragement and constructive criticism. I personally love him as a teacher. One down side is he doesn't give much freedom for personal style.
Oliver is a great teacher
he's passionately teaching layout!definitely a best teacher!he also teaches about working professionally and meeting with tight deadline. he knows the best for student and helps student to improve the drawing.I progress a lot in this class. His method really works! Students need to be open mind and humbly learn because the end result is amazing!
He is a passionate and helpful teacher. He is strict and tough but all it's from his caring. He is honest to everyone instead of pretending there is no problems with our work so I've improved A LOT since I always listened him and fix my problems. I really appreciate with him!
Very helpful! You'll learn a lot about effective storytelling and design thinking, and getting your ideas down quickly. If you love originality and creativity, the course may be stifling in terms of tools (Tombow markers, tracing reference) and ideas (obvious, stereotypical solutions preferred) A good class to master the basic design principles.
Very helpful class, help student get strong idea of layout design.
oliver is a amazing professor ~! He has such unexpected enthusiasm in teaching students and make them become more professional in layout design field ! Believe me , be a humble and positive student, you can learn a large of professional ANM knowledge from Oliver~! ! You'll Love IT !!!
good teacher ,really care about student if you work hard in it,i get some great lesson from him in designing layout. ,too bad that he's extremely annoying to work with, grating personality and totally bias to different approach. He hates digital work with burning passion, don't show him that or he will despite it no matter if it's the piece that ge
as a student point of view, its a hard class but the end result, the portfolio oliver helped me to create from this class is AMAZING impressive, i got many positive feedback from the ANM industry with the portfolio, please dont take this class IF ure lazy student, Oliver is tough and he's honest instructor but students will learn a LOT from him!
Demanding, don't slack you won't have time. "Do more research and think about what and how you put an object down" is really what he is trying to teach you, which is why he makes you do tracing paper. Uses Tombow ink markers for that appeal and line quality most people awe at if done correctly, so get practicing. Works around your schedule for DS!
Oliver is a polarizing teacher. Work hard, go to the workshops, don't miss class, keep a positive attitude and he'll go out of his way to help you. But if he feels like you are being lazy or not accepting his feedback, he can be harsh, irritating, even offensive. Tough teacher, but if you do what he asks, you WILL develop an impressive portfolio.
This class is very helpful. I improved my composition and drawing skill a lot !
very tough, but 100% fair. Learned a lot from Oliver :)
Oliver is the one of my best instrutor at school. Also he is amazing artist. I learned a lot from his class, the first time I did the layout design was very awkward and immature, through his guidance and constant enlightenment that makes me improved a lot. I cannot achieve the great layout without him.
oliver expects students to work hard to earn a grade u deserve, he is a tough instructor but very honest instructor, i learned a lot from this class, highly recommend~
Mr. Sin is a working professional who has been working in the industry for over 20yrs and teaching at AAU for over 10yrs as well, with his help on my layout portfolio and i found an internship at disney, thank YOU Mr.Sin
Oliver was a very inspirational teacher and was very helpful in layout. I learned a lot from that class, especially the importance of using reference. Unlike other AAU teachers I've had, Oliver knows how to critique your work, not you personally. He had such a positive personality and made students feel good about themselves and their work.
Oliver knows the material very well & enhances his lessons with his ample industry experience. He has high standards & expects professional, thoughtful, exciting work from his students, & he does a great job outlining his expectations & offering in-class help & weekly workshops so all who work for it will be successful. A valuable, fun teacher!
it's my 2 time taking layout design from Oliver, he helps me to improve my layouts, Oliver is honest & passionate teacher who gives positive feedback every session! Oliver always says: u work ur ass off to earn a grade u deserve which i think it's true, thank YOU oliver for his help
Oliver knows his stuff. The methods used in this class were new to me a a little hard to break into but once I did it was all soft-serve. Very useful tools obtained from this course. Oliver will push you to get better!
Oliver sin is a very helpful and responsible teacher. It's my great pleasure to take his class. As the first time learning perspective, this class is not easy for me, but Oliver made everything clear and easy to understand. I enjoying this class a lot!
Oliver is an awesome teacher. I learned a lot from his class and I will really miss it. He does not mess around, so be ready to work. He inspired me in my layout design.
He is a very tough teacher, and he makes you work for a good grade. But in the end you come out of that class with tons of new knowledge. I really enjoyed that class, even though it was a busy semester. Do take this class if you really want to push your artistic skills further. Oliver will be your best guide to good layouts! :)
Oliver really treats and prepares students for professional/industry standards. He really emphasizes Concept/Storytelling over Drawing Skills. Executing a strong/exciting story is what separates artists from just making the usual "pretty pictures". In addition, he is a really genuine artist who proclaims himself as an eternal Art student himself
The best thing about Oliver is his positive attitude towards learning. It's so easy to get stressed/frustrated as an artist so it was always encouraging to hear every morning that he was ready for us to pin our "beautiful artwork" up on the walls. He'll give honest and helpful critiques and also advises us on how to give professional presentations.
I found Oliver's Layout Class to be extremely useful. He makes you work hard but if you follow his instructions and put in the time and energy, at the end of the class you will have a great portfolio of work. I enjoyed learning new techniques in this class which included working with tombow markers, prismacolors, and tracing paper.
i got an internship from a portfolio i created from Oliver's layout class, Oliver is very helpful teacher and he pushes u to try 200% weekly, highly recommend him to you ONLY if ure seriously interested in learning!
Great teacher. I really enjoyed the class and learned so much.
I loved this class!!! I learned so much from Oliver. He was very patient and so positive about helping you reach the next level. I came out with a great portfolio and a SOLID understanding of Layout Design. Highly recommended!!! :)
Oliver helps you to improve serious students to improve but academy has open enrollments which means school accepts anybody, Oliver is very helpful conscious teacher ONLY if u are eager to learn, if not, don't waste your time and his time!
Oliver is such a patient and nice teacher!! Of course, this class isn’t easy, but don’t worry, he'll always be there and helping us! I get a beautiful portfolio after that, all depends on how many efforts I put in. I do admire his professional skills and attitude on pressuring better and better art. It’s telling that his class makes me love layout!
It's a great thing to take this class.Oliver always gives us a great outline to guide us. He'll help you to create a great portfolio when you finish this class.
This is a very useful class. I have never thought that I could done the works so great before this class. Basically, in this class, Oliver maximized my potential.
The main problem with him he has been assigning the same assignments for years and industry pro's have been noticing exact same portfolios. Almost all assignments are done by tracing multiple objects from various photos. He usually wont like photos you choose and provide the class with those, so when you look at students work, they are all the same
Oliver is really patient. He'd like to try his best to help every student.Because we need to pay 200% effort on the assignment,so we got really beautiful portfolios at last. Just one thing bothers, depend on the style that he required and the drawing skill that he taught us,i feel most of students' portfolios looked really similar.Anyway, he's great!
Learn how to create a good story telling layout!
not helpful.
Oliver Sin are very professional, and he focuses on traditional layout design. Through his teaching, I learned a lot of knowledge. In class we got a lot of attention, and I get a lot of feedback from him.
Just Passed my Midpoint Review, the reviewers thinks that none of the portfolio i got out of this class would be applicable as an portfolio since it looks all the same as the older students throughout the years.
He would say the same thing over and over again during class, it probably help for some international students, but it just doesn't work for others. most of teachers in the AAU are either inspiring or good ad teaching, this guy is basically has none of those qualities. not reccomended.
try to compensate his zero skill as an artist by being unnecessarily harsh, dont waste your money, energy and time on this.
doesn't keep up with technology and how the real industry works, tools you will need: tracing paper, scissors, tape, markers, etc.just to give an idea about what are you going to face for 15 weeks, originality will not be rewarded, but tracing from pictures will be appreciated so much more.
He assigns the same things every semester to every student, and gives the exact same critiques over and over and just repeats himself. He obviously doesn't enjoy his job anymore, and makes it miserable on all the students. He just makes you trace from photos from magazines and prints.
limited vocabulary. cant answers difficult questions, and ironically will blame you for not finding out the answers yourself.
Helpful and clear, has a good sense of humor, very PRO. Show up on time, do the work, and you'll be fine. Also, grow a thick skin, because he'll tell you exactly what's wrong with your work. Passonaite traditional art guy
ask other students opinions who took it before taking this class to get the "honest real genuine" reviews.
i will encourage you guys to ask him to show his layout portfolio during the first week to make sure you're okay with his artistic skill level which honestly way under the AAU faculty's standard.
Questionable passion in teaching, need to works on his temper, cancelling class pretty often, and i won't expect any feedbacks through email if you cant make to class for any reason.
An easy A class, but whats the point of grade if you learn almost nothing but copying stuffs from various source ?, and hes THAT insecure about his own ability of teaching that he needs to invites some of his “ex-students“ to demonstrate how what they learnt in his class is useful in the industry. Choose a better teachers for your own sake
My money worth every penny spent on AAU, util i stumbled upon this class with this particular teacher
My favorite teacher. His class helped me to think of silhouette shapes of the design element. Thinking of the silhouette shapes of the design elements is really important. Tracing elements from pictures helped me to design look interesting. Oliver, as a teacher, gives me a feeling of meanness first. But his attitude to the students is professional
will bring you down instead of lift the students up. please do your research before taking it.
taking this class as directed study is probably one of the worst decision i've made, we learnt the exact same thing as the regular class, and its twice as depressing to be honest.
there's a line between being inspired and copying, between motivating and being rude as well as line between arrogance and confidence, it seems like Oliver crossed every single lines.
uninspiring.
will get the best out of you. not in a good way.
very strong accent, hard to digest what he wants.
Oliver is a honest and responsible teacher. His class is systematic and practical. If we could put ourself in a good learning attitude and follow his teaching and guidance as a real student--be more unconditional accepting in the class, we would have achievement after this class.
Layout class was very useful for me and I 've learned a lot. Oliver works very hard and helps student very much. His workshop was also very useful for me. Thanks to him
Oliver is a very good teacher. I think if students want to learn and put in the work he will match their level of effort. He always makes time for extra help on projects and it is very clear that he wants students to succeed. His teaching style made me push myself to grow and I really am very grateful.
Oliver is an honest and approachable instructor. Though he has a tendency to like works which is cute and attractive, and his method is no longer used in the industory, I could learn some very important things from him. For ones who know the class is where you LEARN, not receive praise or a good grade, taking his class is a good choice.
spent to much time saying the same thing over and over again, mostly are pointless.
if you art students expect doing anything creative in this class, you might need to look for other classes. However if you expecting to draw or tracing multiple objects based on pictures on furniture catalog, you are on the right place.
never listen to what students have to say, nor our opinions. he needs major changes on his ways of teaching, so it wont stuck on teaching methods the industry used over a decade ago.
Teach us nothing about taking risks and being adventurous with our projects, left me doubting myself to go outside my comfort zone.
Respect his effort to tell students about his personal experience working in the industry, except the fact that he spent 60% of the time doing it than actually teaching us something.
Too much attitude anr narrow-minded for being an art instructor.
I was expecting a class with graduate school level of brainstorming, problem solving and excecution skill to produce well-made portfolio, not a kindegarten's draw cut and paste like this one.
Oliver is stubborn and old fashioned. The assignments are rigid and repeated every semester, so everyone ends up with similar looking portfolio pieces. The techniques we're required to use essentially making collages of tracings from furniture catalogs are out-of-date in the industry today, and slows one down instead of making things efficient.
same topics for your portfolio, years after years, i wonder if he can teach more outside his "typical" assignments.
I like this class, and I learned a a lot from Oliver.
He is quite helpful with the content of the class. I learn many new things from the class. He also help and develop our way of thinking and designing the layout. I think he is more helpful when I attended the workshop. About the assignment, now it seems like the concept is limited and we cannot do many new concept asides from what has been done.
Great instructor. He inspired me a lot. I know the most important thing about design is get great reference first, and it's something I didn't noticed before. And he is so warmhearted to helping, and really hard working person. I learned more than just technique in this class.
I'm satisfy with the contents of the lecture. And I am inspired from this class a lot. If you want to make your own portfolio, you gonna disappoint a lot. But if you have a attitude to get something, you can get tons of new knowledge.
Oliver goes beyond for the student willing to do this same. He volunteers extra hours. Critiques are specific and designed to help you improve. He works with each student where they are. I experienced my best improvement yet in 15 weeks with him, and I plan for more. A tough and great teacher, designed to help you learn.
Oliver Sin is one of my best teacher . He really think about how to make you improve. He likes spending time on you for pushing you forward. if I have any question any time, I can always contact with him and get some feedback. if you are a hard worker, you would learn a lot from him.
Oliver Sin really think about students and he really care if you are improved. He always spend time outside of class to help you. if you are a hard worker he would like to try every thing to make you do better. He really inspired me. I feel really lucky to take his class.
I found Oliver to be a wonderful person and a compassionate teacher. He is techno-phobic, and only teaches techniques through traditional media. He is straightforward when speaking with students so don't expect to be coddled. You will not get portfolio pieces, but you will come out with the confidence to make great backgrounds. Be open-minded.
Oliver is best teacher I have had. He is like a role model to me although I do not talk to him too much. His drawing skill is so high yet he is so humble. He gives very direct feedback so don't expect that he pats your back.
Worst experience in this school. I don't recommend anyone to take Perspective class with him - you won't learn anything about perspective. He is oldfashioned, technophobic and stubborn. Impossible to make a dialog with. Arrogant, irritable, disrespectful and offensive to students. Waste of time, nerves and money. He shouldn't teach adult people.
Asking someone to say good things about him during our on-site sketching in the Union square. I know because the same guy says the same thing about him to me twice. During Monday and Thursday (was accompanying a friend the second time).
i put "Hilarious" tag for how hilarious (ridiculous) his method of teaching is. He expect us to doing something the industry does 10-20 years ago. don't be fooled by his instagram fame, because that's exactly the only thing hes good at when it comes to art, monochromatic portrait painting. so don't expect he is skillfull in layout/perspective
I won't bother to write some reviews if I'm not worried or feels pity to future students who might ended up in his uninspiring classes. Save your money for another classes, any other teachers in the academy is more eligible and trustworthy to teach than he will ever do.
Had him in Fall 2018. The worst teacher I've ever had. Rude and dismissive to everyone. Frequent off-topic rants. Demanded arbitrary revisions. Became belligerent when asked to explain concepts. Frequently approved things (reference photos, earbuds in class, etc.) and then said he hadn't. Violated the ADA by asking me to disclose a disability.
I'm taking Professor Sin for Figurative Concepts online and I'd have to say this class is extremely challenging. As someone who's still pretty amateur in traditional drawing, he is not that lenient at all when it comes to grading. He's very blunt in his feedback, and grades very harshly, with attention to details. He wants everything to be exact.
