good class...not too hard
If you enjoy physiology and are looking for a 4th year elective take this class! He's an awesome professor and cares about the success of his students. Last year we had 2 exams, multiple choice and true/false, very fair. You learn cool stuff about his research. Great class, great professor!
Im gonna make this fair. His physiology class is good in the sense that he organizes the required material well, all you need to know is from his slides, if u dun understand certain things in the slides, then u check out the textbook. And u can watch online for his class which i like the most cos i can concentrate more. he is very helpful!
Professor Birot is definetly one of the best profs in the Kinesiology department. I took KINE 4450 only because i was interested in it, but he made it alot more intereseting than what i thought. His test are not hard or tricky, but you do need to be well prepared. He knows what he teaches in and out since this is his area of research..do recommend
really nice guy, but I could not for the life of me understand him (he has a heavy french accent). normally this would be fine, but it complicates things when talking about something like cell signaling. skip the lectures and memorize the course kit.
Soo hot!I really can't focus. His accent is soooo attractive and he's pretty good looking.Easy course too!
One of the best profs I have ever had. His French accent took a little bit of getting used to but after a couple weeks it's like he's speaking perfect English. He's great at explaining concepts and answering questions in a way that you can understand and provides examples and analogies that make the course material much easier to understand.
If you're not a kinesiology student, you'd better know your neural pathways etc. pretty well..he makes things harder than they need to be and doesn't seem to care about students
His sexy French accent is hard to understand and can give me a headache when I'm trying to learn. He seems to talk slow and repeat stuff that is important which is good.
Nice person and a good prof however not a good TEACHER
Seems to be a little arrogant. Assumes that because he has this great amount of knowledge about physiology, we should too. He explains things clear enough... however his tests are tricky in the sense that they're not just regular multiple choice questions. He gives too many options, having you second guess yourself when answering.
I'm surprised that his supposed "hottness" outweighs the fact that he is arrogant, difficult to understand and and not a good teacher for so many people...i agree with those below me who took the course this year..
very nice french accent, but it is difficult to understand! he goes over concepts which is helpful, however his exams are really really hard! too many options on the multiple choice questions. since this class was only made up of a midterm and a final(no labs or assignments) he really should have been more lenient and made the exam easier!
Awesome prof. I didn't have him for Phys 1, only for Adv. Phys Cardiovascular. He often related the material to real world cases and his lectures were very interesting. His exams were very fair. In the final lots of people got A's and A+'s. His accent isn't as bad as the other ppl on here are making it out to be. He's a very down to earth guy.
He is a very good professor, and he explains concepts very well. When ever people asked questions in class, he answered them all very nicely and properly. Only thing is, his exam questions are not easy .. it takes time to read them, process it and understand the question.
Use your textbook, go over your notes and review.. If you dont study youll do bad.. his exams ask you DETAILED questions so go over them
I didnt like how the grades were only based on two exams, but the prof was alright.
good prof
very good proff
Perhaps one of the most interesting classes I have taken. Very knowledgeable professor, knows his area very well. Highly recommend this course. Note that the course and tests are not easy, must know the material inside out.
Smart professor makes one understand concepts clearly with every day concepts. Although his exams are tricky like A, B, C, two of the above, etc.
It's too bad this man doesn't teach the entire course. AMAZING.
You'll 1st have to process the accent through your mind then the actual info being given = hard to keep focus, even sitting in front rows coming to lecture with loads of enthusiasm = confusion + disappointed at the end. He does make an effort to explain some points again & again, which you may not necessarily have found difficult @ all.
Listen carefully, accent can be difficult sometimes. Repeats easy concepts many times while briefly going over difficult concepts. Don't be tricked into thinking course is easy.. Lectures may be easy but I have no clue where he gets his questions from. Questions are EXTREMELY specific so make sure you study.
Cardiovascular physiology is a very interesting course. Must listen and grasp fully what the professor tries to explain. It's his field and he really tries to do the best for the student to understand the material. Test are not easy, they are demanding, require full understanding of the material and application. Highly recommended.
This prof is smoking hot. That notwithstanding he is dynamicintelligent Taught the middle part of 2011, the material is dense and complicated but he manages to make it interesting & applicable with real life examples. I recommend recording lecturesre listening. test are TOUGH but fair. GET the txbook he talk about its way better then ours.
Very competent guy. Well organized and fair course. Stick to just the lecture book the textbook is kinda useless. Attendance is a must.
Really liked the way he taught. He gave examples and always asks if we understand, giving the opportunity for questions. Only problem is his accent. It can be tough to understand at times. Overall loved the way he explained and it made studying easier. Make sure you pay attention and take notes and it will pay off. Great prof!
Honestly could not pay attention for more than 5 min in his class without drifting off. And I know this is not because of my attention span, because the moment Tanya Dasilva (the other joint prof of this course) began lecturing, I could understand everything she was saying! I don't know if it was because of his strong french accent .
Cool guy but not the most interesting lecturer. Maybe it's the accent that serves as a distraction. His exams questions are pretty detailed, but they're all based off HIS lecture notes so study those. Only use the textbook as a guide if you don't understand his notes as some of them are a bit confusingvague.
He's hot. Tests aren't. nuff said.
Hes a good prof if you can get past the accent. His test are based entirely on his lecture so if you dont get anything, use the textbook as ref. his tests are spec and confusing at times such as a or b a and b or 3 of the 4 options above or correct. half of the test questions he gave were true or false.
I'll try to make this as objective as possible: if you just attend, focus and take notes you will get most of the content because he does a great job of repeating himself and explaining. It helps that he is funny, straightforward and HUMBLE. What i liked is that he admits that contrary to popular belief, profs dont know everything about everything.
Not a bad prof. You do have to attend his lectures though (has some extra slides which are not in the course kit at times). His accent may get distracting but its not bad, you get used to it after a week. Repeats the concepts and applies it to real life examples, which made me understand his content. His test questions are not bad, read carefully.
His accent may be distracting but he does a good job really explaining concepts, slides are packed with info so no textbook needed, I got an A by using the course kit only!! The major downside is that his test Qs have VERY tricky answers such as "all of the abovea and ba, b and d.." which really tests deep understanding and tiny details!
Love the accent! his looks are very distracting
Great prof!! Good pace, clear, funny and repeats things so everyone can understand. Interesting material. Must attend class as he lectures on things that aren't in the book, and also tells you what to expect on the tests. Not to mention, his accent is nice!
Extremely helpful and accommodating for students. hilarious during lectures. his tests are not the easiest but fair.
Dr. Birot was clear and concise with his lectures and even took time to go over tough concepts more than once in class. His tests are fair. Just study and put some effort into the course and you will be fine.
An absolute blast. Lectures are interesting and his accent is fun to listen to. Tests are not easy but fair. He goes over the material many times so you'll have no trouble keeping up. His slides are complete and textbook use is not necessary. Some effort should get you a relatively easy A (at least on his section of the course)
Awesome teacher!
Dr. Birot is an amazing professor. You'll adjust to his accent after the first lecture or two. His exams aren't cumulative, and he breaks it down into 4 different modules. He really wants his students to be successful. He'll occasionally review material not posted on Moodle, so attending regularly is helpful. If you put in the effort, an easy A .
Most straightforward prof I've ever had. Fair exams (non-cumulative). He occasionally drops hints about what will be on the exam so go to his lectures. He's hot and has a hot French accent anyways. His slideshows literally have all the material you need, went the whole semester with my textbook in original wrapping and got an A.
Prof. Birot is an amazing lecturer, his accent is not a problem AT ALL. He explains concepts in more than one way until you understand. Material is not too difficult to understand and going to lectures definitely helps because he sometimes tests you on lecture material. Go to lectures or read the book, either way its an easy A If you try a bit.
Great professor, reasonable level of difficulty in his evaluations. Just read the textbook and you'll do well, I didn't make most of his 8:30 am lectures (which were not recorded btw) so I relied mostly on the textbook to help me prepare for his evaluations.
Knowledgable, very reasonable, interesting guy, and lectures aren't boring. Cool guy.
Dr. Birot is awesome! Hilarious lectures keeping you awake in the morning, he gets to the point with the material and does so in a clear way. Tests are fair. Just keep up with the studying. 4 tests spread throughout the semester (not sure if this format will stay, who knows). It forces you to keep up with the reading. Awesome class, no complaints!
Birot is awesome. I'm surprised he doesn't have a higher rating. He presents material clearly and does everything he can to make sure you do well. Be sure to study for 2011 consistently throughout the semester because last minute cramming will not work.
AMAZING professor! You can tell that he truly cares about his students and helps them a lot. At first he may seem like he doesn't care and he is going to be very tough, but by the end of the course you will fall in love him. his exams are not easy, but if you study you can defiantly get an A. I really do recommend taking his course.
Excellent prof, had for both 2011 and krav maga pkin. 2011 was cake, you could miss all classes and memorize the slides for an a. He did give some q's that only were addressed in class so showing up does have some benefit.
Best professor I've ever had. Really funny guy and makes phys interesting - I actually enjoyed going to a 9:30 class. His course is set up to make sure everyone has the opportunity to do well. Pay attention in class and make sure you understand every detail on the slides and an A+ is definitely possible. Textbook is not needed.
Does not set a very pleasant atmosphere, picks on anyone who says one word to the person next to them. someone at the back made a comment about not being able to hear him and he said move to the front or be quiet (not very caring). lectures are not very clear and gives off the impression that he is not very engaged which reflects on students!
Do not understand him.
Dr. Birot really cares about his students and wants them to succeed. You definitely cannot leave studying to the last minute, but his tests are pretty straightforward if you came to class and studied your notes. He makes it clear that if you want to make office hours, he's more than happy to explain any concept to you then.
Dr. Birot is a really great prof! He always gives a summary at the end of every lecture and in the beginning and he genuinely cares about his students, he's funny and explains concepts well and repeats it so we understand it.
The material is pretty simple material. Study - Pass, Don't - Fail. He doesn't wish for your downfall like many professors. He's pretty cool. His slides are pretty detailed and that's all you really need to study to get a good grade. Honest dude, clearly let us know that the textbook is optional. Don't talk in class, he'll call you out.
Great professor, funny, engaging. Puts on a though guy face but he really cares about students understanding and passing the course, even with silly metaphors that will stick to your memory. Tests are extremely fair, people giving bad ratings simply did not study and thought that multiple choice questions can be answered without studying. Go study!
Very enthusiastic, knowledgeable, patient and easygoing. Not a very tough grader. Very caring and kind.
Birot's a great prof, always keeps the class entertaining and actually helps you remember easily. go to class to get the benefits since he uses chalkboard and gives some Q and A for the exam. He always does summary at the end of lectures and next class he'll refresh your mind again from what you learnt. Great prof!
Cheers to a good semester with this man. Played it fair and square and made sure his class understood the concepts. If you read his notes you were solidddd for the test. Good guy to joke with (here it is) and to explain concepts with.
Honestly love this professor. At first he may seem tough but he really does care about his students and really wants to see them succeed. Also the fact that he's hilarious and very easy on the eyes is an added bonus :) Overall awesome prof and great course!
This man is exactly what students need nowadays; he disciplines his students to attend class and shut up when he is talking. I have much respect for this man because he is one of the few remaining profs who actually care about students learning material taught during class. He also will spend a lot of time after class taking up questions.
Average prof. sure, he can be funny but difficult to understand at times. I must say his tests are fair.
Such a difficult prof, he intentionally makes exam difficult to lower your mark. His test are difficult and he always tests what he says not what's on his slides. Horrible...
Dr Birot is a great professor and he really knew his stuff but I found his evaluations pretty difficult and it seemed like what he was lecturing on was not on his evaluations. Overall, he is a good professor but this is a tough course
He is a good prof. Tests are based on the slides and not the textbook. His accent is a little problem when listening to the recording.
Dr. Birot makes it clear that you have to attend the class or you will miss out on a lot of the details that the slides don't have. Plus, you really have to read the slides and ask him questions if you don't understand anything. He will never test you on things he didn't mention in class. So, show up.
Great professor and a very interesting class. He takes it slowly and make sure everyone is one the same page before he moves on to the next topic. Class is not that hard just follow his advice and his tips and always attend class, He accommodates students and give you the option to drop a midterm if you didn't do well. Overall amazing professor.
I wasn't sure what to expect before the term started, but I'm glad I stayed in this class. Birot is super entertaining and really makes sure everyone is on the same page. You can't just memorize the information, you have to understand the concepts because there are application questions on the tests. Good course but you have to put in the time.
Great professor - he knows how to keep class interesting with funny stories and explains concepts clearly. The material itself is very different but he makes sure everyone understands as he moves along. He also wants everyone to do well, giving lots of hints and the option to drop a midterm. It's a shame this is his last year teaching this course!
he is great
He's very funny and all but he has a severe case of monotone when explaining, I find I have to put in effort to concentrate on what he's saying, that could also be because he uses a lot of fancy words to explain simple things. Also he gives the slides but he sometimes adds extra slides in lecture, so beware of that.
Bad prof, really bad at explaning things. To make things worse, he has a strong accent and monotone
He's a cool person, tells funny and interesting stories during early morning lectures which are nice. However, he is not good at explaining concepts. I'm taking KINE 4010 concurrently, and the exact same concepts are explained with far more clarity. This transcends to lecture notes which have some spelling errors and leaves me a bit confused.
Absolutely one of the worst prof I've ever had. His class is so boring and with his strong accent it's super hard to understand course materials. His class was just absolutely nightmare. He wastes so much time telling his life stories instead of teaching. I paid to learn stuff not to hear your boring life stories.
Did not like him at all. I found that he goes off topic a lot so I would zone out. It's hard when you zone out constantly because he goes on tangents and then you need zone back in when he starts lecturing again. His content isn't easy either so doesn't help when he goes on tangents. Be prepared to teach yourself and really go over the stuff
Attendance, textbook, and lecture recordings are non-mandatory. Reading powerpoint presentations are sufficient. Midterm 25%, 4 online quizzes (10% each), and a cumulative final. (Please note: wether or not one will require the use of the aforementioned resources really depends on your year as well as level of preparedness)
This prof knowledge0 (ask him a question and he will say I don't understand what you are saying). Talks about many things that are not necessary. Not caring at all. You get your mark if you study by yourself and he will not help anyone at the end at all. He will not even answer your email basically. Do the moodle quizzes will all your friends!
great prof
Great prof. His accent is definitely not a problem, he is a little monotone, but he speaks slow and clear so everyone understands. Take lecture notes and study from slides. Textbook not needed- just download the older version from LibGen! Test are easy but very hard because you are given 35 mins to do 40 question!
Do not recommend this prof. He does not know how to teach.
Please use the book if you want to do well in his class, dont depend on the slides you will fail. I dont recommend listening to his lectures (unless you are french or comfortable with french accent). First test is easy(cells), second (blood) and third (action potentials) are super hard, last (muscle) is easy. Get ready to self study!
He is entertaining but is sometimes dry and monotone, you can tell he's bored of teaching this course. His explanations are not always that clear and he can be confusing at times. Tests are tricky - you don't have enough time and you always think you did better than you actually did, be careful with wording! He's not great but he's not terrible.
The bad reviews on here are because the students did not study or allowed his french accent to hinder them from understanding. I attended 0 lectures and only listened to the recordings and received an A in the course. Take DETAILED notes about EVERYTHING he says, and you will do fine. His exams are JUST LIKE his slides and verbal explanations.
Very heavy accent so takes all concentration just to make out what he's saying. Lectures are recorded but way to hard to understand without seeing his mouth move. Tests are pretty fair.. if you study a lot and put in the effort.
Dr. Birot is a great prof.. he knows his stuff and loves what he teaches. Good course to take. Test are only Short Answer so if you dont like that stay away. Otherwise , interesting content
I took Professor Birots extreme environments course and really enjoyed it. He didnt over load us with material, rather focused on applying our knowledge. He incorporated his personal experiences into the lectures making it very easy to follow along. He even gave us an opportunity to receive bonus marks to help our midterm grades. Genuinely cares.
Lots of material to learn every class but if you pay attention he will mouth feed you the material
Stay away from this course! Content is not hard but marking criteria is very ambiguos. Maybe it was me but he is very condescending and unapproachable , his way or the highway type of thing. Even living the whole covid 19 he didnt once say that he would try to adjust things for us. And if you do decide to take him well gluck! I hope he grew up
Do yourself a favour and stay awake from 4442 and his other altitude course. If you are taking the course for fun then sure do it, it is interesting but if not dont! He will show at the beginning of the class an average of 80% in his course for previous years but its only because he gives bonus marks at the end, dont be fooled Avg in test 2 was a50
Professor Birot is old school in the best way possible, the way he delivered the course material was very engaging to bring the student out of everyone. The testing i different, but better, no multiple choice forcing you to know the material. KINE 4442 was a very educational course, especially if you are an adventurer and love to exercise out doors
Dr. Birot is a dedicated professor who loves what he teaches. He is an expert in this field and created this course to broaden students' perspectives in exercise physiology. He is also funny and tells good stories to keep the class engaged. The negative reviews here are by immature, petty people who did not do well since they did not study!
Dr. Birot is a world class professional. Hands down the best professor in the kinesiology department at york. He is a great lecturer and he is determined in helping students. His earlier reviews do not reflect him as he cares about students and is very engaged with the students. His lecture material and research is very interesting and unique.
Great lecturer and knowledgeable.
