Avoid at all costs. You will learn absolutely nothing from him. So much more work than necessary is needed to get ahead in this class. Most of your time will be wasted trying to comprehend what he's saying, and if you manage to do that, the comprehension of the subject is a completely different story. Non interactive class, your grades will suffer.
He is extremely knowledgeable, and knows what he's talking about. Sometimes he can be hard to understand, but if you put in the effort and go to him for help, he is more than willing to help! He has an accent, but once you get used to it..it's not bad at all. Plus, so many professors at Clemson have accents so its a barrier everyone has to cross.
This man is so easy. I never go to class and or if I did i literally went to sleep and I have a high A. If you just read the chapter you will pass. Homework come offline so you cant make an F. And he lets you work in groups for quizzes in class.
He is difficult to understand and he his powerpoints go over way more material than needed. You'll learn more from going to SI then going to class but he gives quizzes every week. I'd recommend getting another teacher unless you already know chemistry.
Dr. G does not speak English clearly! Unless you are in the first 3 rows you will not be able to understand what he is saying. The class is pointless because when he does examples on the board you can't read his hand writing!
Going to class is pretty pointless, just read the book and take notes yourself. You only really need to go for quizzes and tests. The quizzes are group quizzes and the homework answers are online. Just study the quizzes and homework and you will do fine. Class isnt too hard at all.
The sweetest man ever! His accent was tough to understand at first but after a while you get used to it. He makes a point to know everyone in the classes name and always gives a chance for late work to make up bad grades.
Great guy. Very knowledgeable and very friendly. He does lots to help the classout on every quiz and test.
Really nice professor who was very helpful and knowledgable of the subject. While he was a little unclear at times, the tests were so easy that it didn't matter much. His quizzes were group assignments and he gave a lot of extra credit. Would definitely recommend this class!
I did not enjoy this class at all. Dr. G is boring and he is soft-spoken, so you can't hear him unless you're in the first few rows of the classroom. I loved chemistry in high school, but I've lost my interest since Dr. G's class.
I took him in back to back semesters He's pretty difficult to understand. However, if you read the book and review the powerpoint you have a great chance of making an A! He's a really nice guy, just not a natural teacher.
The only reason to attend lecture is if there is homework due, a quiz, or a test. While he is a nice guy and he seems to know what he's talking about, he does not lecture well. He is hard to understand and simply reads a power point based directly off the book. You will do better on the exams if you just read the book carefully.
He is ALWAYS willing to help explain above and beyond what normal Profs would.
Olt is a great guy. He's really funny, but nearly impossible to understand with his Romanian accent. I was able to get an A. Most of the homework and the quizzes are online. Attending the lectures is practically pointless. He posts all of the notes online and there are no pop quizzes. So you can skip every time there isn't a quiz or homework due.
Really nice guy, but you're going to need to read & take notes from the book to actually learn & get A's on homeworks, quizzes, and tests. He has an accent but you're able to understand him a lot better as time goes on, i promise. He doesn't take attendance. Most of the homework and quiz answers are online somewhere.
Dr. G is a great and funny guy, but impossible to understand in class. I never went to class except for quiz days, and still managed to get an A in the class. I recommend going to SI to learn the material as much as possible.
You know that saying: "If you're not foreign, you're boring?" That doesn't apply to Dr. Olt. I was bored. But he is really, really nice. You have to listen closely because he's from another country. Study a little to get a good grade. If you have any questions, ask him in his office; he can be very helpful.
Dr. G is very helpful and does what he can to help you succeed. The only issue I feel is relevant with him is that his accent can be hard to work around. However, if you sit in the front half of the class and listen carefully it really isn't an issue.
Olt is very willing to answer questions or work through tough problems with you. He gives extra credit on his quizzes, which many other Chem professors don't do. Also, many of the quizzes are completed as a group. Olt genuinely cares about his students and their understanding - and I've chosen to take him again for CH102. Textbook is not necessary.
I'm not good at chemistry but I am doing well in this class. He lectures right from PowerPoints and does not take attendance. The quizzes are in groups and the tests are curved. His accent is very hard to understand.
He is a very nice guy and genuinely cares about his students. He can be funny, but his accent is hard to understand and he rambles over the power points all class. He curves his quizzes and tests and some quizzes are in groups.
He makes information pretty easy to understand although his accent is pretty thick. All the quizzes are group quizzes and the information on the exams are pretty much the same as what's on the quizzes. Lectures are boring though and all he does is read from long PowerPoints.
Olt is a really nice person and wants his students to do well. He has an accent, but you can still understand him. He reads from the slides and doesn't write many examples. The book really helps if you do not understand a topic. Olt will help you if you need it and go to the SI sessions.
Olt is really nice and want you to do well. He has an accent but after about a week you get used to it. He rarely gives any examples and the ones he does work out are really confusing. I sat in on other professor's classes and learned a lot more. If you don't have a natural mind for chemistry I would not suggest taking him.
Olt isn't a bad teacher, nor is he great. You can pass his class with an A without going to class as long as you study the slides he posts on blackboard. Group quizzes make class very easy, and exams aren't difficult at all. Group paper/presentation is also easy, and it is a nice boost to your grade.
Olt is a really nice guy, while his accent is sometimes hard to understand in the large lecture hall, you get used to it. He isn't the best lecturer, but it's a good class. All of the slides are on blackboard and if you study those and read the book, you will pretty much get an A. Class isn't mandatory either
During the lecture, Olt never stopped to explain anything and provided little to no examples. I had to teach myself everything outside of the class. Going to PAL sessions helps. Your grade is based almost entirely on tests, the quizzes hardly count for anything. The final exam is easier than the other tests. Wouldn't take him again.
Read the book to pass. His lectures do not help for the tests. Knows what he is talking about, but he rarely explains anything. The homework is hard. I suggest googling most of it. Although the test are all multiple choice, so the class could be way harder. But he just kind of assumes that we know everything when we really don't.
Yes he has an accent, but its not awful. You get used to it too. He used to be a chemical engineer so if you are an engineering major he is a great professor. He explains things as an engineer. He moves fast and you cant have laptop out, but he does an amazing job at making sure you know what you need to know for the test. Overall, great professor.
He is definitely very smart, however he often breezes past slides with vocab, and rarely gives examples. When he does, they normally end up being more like tangents. If you are using a phone, laptop, or just doing other things he WILL call you out. He tells you you can only miss 4 classes, but never takes attendance. Really not a hard class.
Class is nothing special, just him reading from PowerPoints he posts online. He definitely knows his stuff and will go into detail on some subjects, but that sort of thing is never on the test. Most of the test questions come from the book, and some are pretty specific. Gives a lot of grades between chapter quizzes & tests, though.
He is very hard to understand for one and when he is understandable it is almost like he is in his own world. Lets put it this way, if I didnt have a genius best friend there is no way I would have passed even with tutoring and reading the textbook!
Get the textbook! Professor Geiculescu's lectures more very quickly and it is hard to understand with his accent. He does not go over the material needed for tests and quizzes, but he is a fair grader. Take notes from the book and online homework and you'll be fine.
Olt knows his stuff when it comes to Chemistry, but his lectures are beyond boring. I went to every class (he says attendance is mandatory but he rarely takes attendance), but I just read the book and took notes on that during lectures because he goes through his powerpoints too quickly to take notes, and he doesn't allow computers. Easy class.
He is a nice and intelligent man who should be teaching higher level courses. He never explains the basics and rarely covers what is actually on the test or does practice problems all the way through. He can be difficult to understand so sit at the front. He never lets out early and his lectures are painfully dull but he tries. No big deal to skip.
get a chegg account and you will be golden for this class. Sweet, funny man who understands this class isn't for science majors. grading scale is pretty test heavy so you can bomb quizzes and it won't affect your grade.
This professor is hilarious and very cute. He really knows his stuff, but his lectures are SO boring and unhelpful. Get ready to memorize the chapters in the book.
None of what he talks about in class is actually on any tests or quizzes. Everything is from the book and all of the quiz/test questions are on Quizlet somewhere. Best advice I can give you is to find a friend who's taken the class before and ask to borrow/buy their old tests. (At least half of the questions on every quiz or test don't ever change)
He's always trying to uplift everyone's spirit, and does his best to insure that you pass his class
Not enjoyable at all. Doesn't allow computers. Information from lectures are barely on the exams so attending class is not beneficial but he will randomly take attendance. You need to read the textbook to study the material that will be on the test. Frequent quizzes on each chapter during the class after the chapter powerpoint is finished.
While he is a nice and caring guy, I found that the class was the most difficult Ive taken so far. The concepts are easily understood however some things on the test werent addressed in lecture. He also frequently quizzes (kind of every chapter) and theyre often much harder than the exams. He does give extra credit homework that helps your grade
Worst professor I've ever had. Nothing in class will come up on tests. Learned more from the Lab TA about chemistry. No attendance taken, so no point in even going to class. After the first two weeks total attendance was like 55% on the best days. Horrible, but easy class.
He's a nice guy but it seems that he is so smart that he can't dumb anything down if you ask a question. He is also from Romania, so he has an accent which may be a problem for some. He gives a quiz after each chapter so be prepared for that. They are pretty tough. I've gotten basically a 67 on every single one except a couple. But quizzes are 5%.
This man gives SO MANY QUIZES. They are 10x harder than the tests made by the chem department, and not in a helpful way. They don't cover what was taught in class and they don't cover test material. They're on the same topic but the difficulty level is ridiculous. He also just reads straight off of the slides for his lecture and he is hard to hear.
Really boring classes, but he will take attendance randomly. Really cares about his students, so if you are having trouble with something, go to him! Gives extra credit and is willing to work with you so you are happy with your grade.
Olt doesn't exactly teach the best for the exam. He gives you the content you need but barely touches on the non-math application you'll see on the exams. Doesn't assign much homework or many quizzes (in-class, not group) but take that as you will. Take advantage of PAL sessions too. They are way helpful for 1010 and 1020 with Olt.
I have attended every lecture for Dr. Olt's class, and every single lecture consisted of him reading the notes from his powerpoint word-for-word. You would think that a professor understands that his students can read for themselves, but I'm not sure Olt has realized this. I have never felt like I wasted more time in a lecture than until now.
Went to Zoom lectures and he only read off the slides. He answers questions poorly when we ask in class. Tests were impossible because going to zoom lectures was pointless.
Absolutely awful. I'm normally a straight A student and I choked my way through this class. Can never get in contact with him, so couldn't even get help when needed. He attempts to go through powerpoints with 70+ slides every class. Absolutely no direction for tests, and tests are way too long for the period. Avoid at all costs.
he flies through slides to the point you cant write notes, makes mock exams that are nothing like the actual exams, gives no direction of what the mc on exams will be so its a guessing game based on luck of what to study, doesnt teach material well, then blames the students for low overall averages on the exams. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
PLEASE AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS! I have never experienced a professor that is more dismissive of a class's concerns, and he never seemed bothered that our exam averages were around 60% every time. Lectures consisted of him reading off of slides and exams had very random topics to be answered in too short of time.
Nah... just don't do it. He only reads off the slide, doesn't really work well with computers and zoom. All test/quiz are lockdown with camera and audio. Sweet man, but defiantly not the move for an online classroom.
Let's see... This class was ruthless. I dreaded it every time I went because he flew through all the material and didn't actually teach anything that wasn't on the slides. He gave mock exams, but they were NOTHING like the real exam. The averages on the test never got above like a 65. AVOID THIS MAN AT ALL COST!!!!
During lectures, he reads the slides word for word. You must read textbook in order to understand the material. He skims over the math parts. Out of all assignments (homework, quizzes, exams, final presentation/paper) the only grades recorded are the quizzes and exams until the end of the semester. Doesn't thoroughly answer questions.
Cant understand, lectures very boring, you need to self teach yourself, test are really hard.
Geiculescu is a good professor in a bad place. His lectures are packed full of so much rambling information that you sometimes can't cram it all into your head. If you are a chem major, take this guy! If you're not, you might want to try someone who can give you just the test essentials.
This guy sucks. I don't have a problem with his accent; you get used to it. But I have never heard this professor answer a question straight up. He always dodges the answer and/or answers very vaguely. His lectures are boring, and he just reads directly off of slides, all while skipping through them incredibly fast so you don't have time to write.
Hard to understand, does a poor job explaining material
Was not cooperative whatsoever. I have to go home early for thanksgiving break for family stuff and he wouldn't let me. You're also not allowed to use computers in his class.. only paper and pen. He goes way too fast over the slides, extremely hard to understand, and is extremely ineffective in teaching. I actually went to a different chem class.
Olt is a really nice guy, but his teaching is not the greatest. He just puts a powerpoint on the screen and reads it for an hour and 15 mins. He talks really fast and has a really thick accent. You don't really know what's expected of you on the quizzes/tests, so you just have to hope you studied the right things. Just be ready to teach yourself
Olt is a very nice chem professor but he doesn't let you take notes on a computer and his accent requires you to really focus in class to follow along. His quizzes are hard but they prepare you for the exams which are easier. There is less homework in his class compared to other chem profs, but the exam averages are lower. The pal sessions are good
He really cares about his students and wants them to do well, but he reads off of the powerpoint slides for the majority of his lecture, so it is hard to pay attention. The quizzes are the hardest part of the class, but they only count for 5% of your grade and there are a lot of them. The exams are easier than the quizzes, so they prepare you.
Most of the lectures have nothing to do with the tests and exams. He has a very thick accent, so it's really difficult to understand him. No computers are allowed during lectures, and he flies through the slides, so it's really hard to take notes unless you read beforehand.
Not a good Professor for CH 1020! Do not take if given a choice. He is very lecture heavy but goes over the examples too fast and speeds through the notes. The in class quizzes are also extremely difficult. The worst chemistry professor for CH 1020.
The worst CH 1020 Professor at Clemson. He read straight off the power point and does not explain the examples. He is also very hard to understand with his thick accent. Not good at explaining anything chemistry related. Worst professor I have had at Clemson so far.
Olt is a really nice guy, I'll give him that. However, he often goes on tangents and reads entirely off the powerpoint while also moving incredibly fast. This man can finish a 100 slide powerpoint in an hour and not bat an eye. I have had him twice for two different chem courses and I will not be taking him again.
Olt is extremely hard to understand even though he reads straight off the powerpoint. His tests and quizzes are almost impossible to get a B or A on unless you go over the whole 140-150 slide powerpoint word for word. It is so specific for a beginning chem class. Would not recommend this professor to anyone.
He is the worst Professor I have had at Clemson. Do not take him at all cost. His quizzes are impossible and he never slows down. He is naive to how much his students struggle in his class.
He simply does not give us enough study material to succeed on the exams in his class. The quizzes are pretty hard as well but are worth a small portion of the final grade. Attendance is practically mandatory because you have to be aware of when the quizzes are happening. Take someone else if possible
Awful lectures. Cant understand anything he says.
Terrible.
He is a nice guy, but his course is largely self taught. His unit power points are at least 100 slides, but you are not tested on a vast majority of it. You have to read the textbook and pick out what you think is the important information to do well on the exams. Attendance wasn't mandatory though, except on quiz days.
This class was overall just really hard, but if you go to Dr. Olt's office hours the class will get so much easier! I struggled a lot during lectures to understand what he is saying, and the quizzes were really hard; but, going over the material with him is so much easier than trying to study on your own!
He is very hard to understand and flies through his slides, but I actually had a good experience with him. I took CH1010 here and found that his 1050 class is much better structured and the material is much easier to understand. He also gives lots of extra credit and your lowest exam gets dropped. I would take 1050 over 1010 if you have the choice.
this class is hard but no where as hard as 1010, if you have the option TAKE 1050 over it. a quiz and hw for each chapter and 3 exams total with a group project and chem lab is a BIG percent of grade. GO TO HIS EXTRA CREDIT DAYS--tour of world of energy & botanical gardens--prob the only reason he gave me an A is because I went to both
Even though he is a nice guy his class is extremely difficult for beginner chem. if you have never taken chem or it is not your strong suit this class is not for you. he relys on prior knowledge and has tons of slides that you will review and barely any of that is on the test.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS This class was one of the worst I've ever taken. Not only is he just a bad teacher, he teaches things INCORRECTLY. As in my friends and TAs would work problems he did after and some of his answers would be wrong. He skips through slides when he has run out of time, skips examples, and sometimes makes fun of students. Dont take
The only way to pass the course is to find previous quizlets from past students. He does not have study guides, tutoring, or PAL sessions available. Attendance is not mandatory however, on days when not many students show up he takes attendance. He goes through 50 PowerPoint slides per class and 90% of it is not on the tests or quizzes
Olt is a nice guy but the format of his quizzes and tests is not ideal. For the quizzes you have to rely on past quizlets but for the tests its a shot in the dark you never know what random questions are going to be on it. It is easier than 1010 so I would take it as well the lab section is a lot easier than 1010. He does give extra credit.
DO NOT TAKE CHEMISTRY WITH OLT!!! Everything you learn for this class will be from outside of class on your own. Absolutely never responds to emails. If you are already stuck with him I HIGHLY recommend the PAL sessions for chemistry, they are the only reason I got an A.
Olt is a great person and cares for his students! However, he is not the best at explaining chemistry concepts and reads directly off of the slides. Also, he rushes through practice problems and does not really explain how he got the correct answer. The exams are pretty difficult but the final exam replaces the lowest exam grade.
Just really hard to understand and almost none of the lecture pertains to the exams. The averages on exams were probably the lowest out of all classes and wanted to get hit by a bus before this class.
Dr. Olt is genuinely such a nice person. He really cares about his students and it shows. There are a lot of quizzes, and the exams are mostly made of the quiz questions. Use quizlet to your advantage and you'll be fine. He is very understanding and offers extra credit early which will really help you. The class is a little tricky but he's great.
I haven't finished the course yet, but Olt is honestly one of the nicest people you will ever meet. He is very approachable and will answer your questions. However, I think he has so much knowledge that when he tries to compare other subjects to chemistry it can be confusing. It helped me to ask him questions + put in your own time into studying.
hes not very good with his lectures but he is a very nice person who will help if you ask
I hear a lot of mixed things about Olt, but Chem2 is just a hard class overall. I'm probably going to manage to squeak by with an A, and that came from asking Olt for extra help and attending pal sessions. He's incredibly sweet and understanding, and with the right amount of work, a good grade is possible!
olt can be confusing but if you use quizlet to your advantage you will be fine. he reads straight from the slides, hw on the chapter then a quiz and 1 group paper and presentation. 2 exams that cover 2-3 chapters each and final is NOT cumulative. go to his extra credit tours for easy points on your final grade! SOO much easier than gen chem
I took this class for a lab requirement. Do not do that. Take an easier class This class was very quiz and test heav. The tests and quizzes were multiple choice but extremely difficult. I had a D the whole semester but met with him and somehow ended with a B. He offers extra credit, but overall lectures are boring and you cannot understand him.
I wanted to genuinely fall asleep. I don't know what I learned. Drop.
You have a quiz on every chapter and exam every few chapters. They are easy as long as you read textbook and go over basic stuff. HW is very easy you get unlimited attempts. Is hard to understand but it doesn't get in the way of doing good in his class.
Do not take him. I felt like no matter how much I studied, I still wasn't getting good grades. He claims to be going off of the textbook but will have random questions on tests about random statistics that were never mentioned. VERY unhelpful when trying to understand material. Thick accent, too, and assumed everything was common sense.
Let me start by saying Olt is a great guy, and he seems really sweet. His class was awful though. It's hard to understand him, his lecture are boring, and the exams are hard. This quizzes he gives out are easy because you can find quizlets similar to them. I did not enjoy this class at all, simply because I had no idea what was going on.
He's so nice but he unintentionally makes the class more difficult. Do the homework!
Olt is incredibly kind, caring, and funny. Class is repetitive every day, and lecture is kind of boring. Also, for every quiz/exam there are quizlets that are very similar- if not the same- that are great study tools. There is one paper and slideshow group project at the end, but it's not hard at all. If you need a lab science, I recommend this.
I highly recommend finding another teacher if possible. He teaches unnecessary information that will not be on the exam and it will confuse you even more. This class is made to be difficult but he doesn't explain the topics very well. He is very nice but I would advise anyone to change classes immediately.
so awful i cant even begin where to start. chem 2 is already hard enough and somehow he manages to make it ten times harder. his lectures consists of useless information and i end up teaching myself every single lesson
Does not respond to email, impossible to understand through accent, got super annoyed during the group project when a group had technology issues. Definitely a nice guy overall but is not technologically savvy or accessible outside of class.
I hated this class and this professor. The class isn't too difficult because you can use quizlets to study for quizzes and exams. He says the book is required, but don't buy it. You can survive this class and get a good enough grade, but you probably won't learn anything about chemistry. He is very hard to understand in lectures.
i dont miss him. dont take it. please save urself. if ur graphic comm.... im sorry.
Impossible to understand, never gives practice problems. Awful.
I used to pray and hope I would fall violently ill or get run over before going to his class just so I didn't have to deal with it. I actually hated chemistry because of him. He assumes you know everything, so will not elaborate on anything at all. He seems like a nice person, but he just isn't meant to be a gen chem professor.
The worst professor you could take. He sets his students up for failure. If you need to learn something, do not go to him, instead watch youtube or tutoring (I learned more in tutoring than his class).
Not really teaching the material, the quizzes and the homework don't correlate much. Hard to understand during lectures. just reads off the slides with no real instruction and you need to already know chemistry to succeed or be good at teaching yourself. In 1050 there are no PAL instructors or tutoring services so make friends to study with.
no. barf. thats all i have to say. Gen chem is awful as is but do your self a favor and at least get someone who can teach. This class makes me breakdown once a week. I could be home with family rn for thanksgiving break but nooooooo of course we have the last exam time.
I think this man is truly out to get me. His powerpoints contain the most random material and his quizzes are so much more difficult than the tests. I would study for hours and still fail. He is kinds funny though and sweet and I like him as a person but he is not a good teacher and I think he is praying on my downfall.
he is not a good professor, he cannot explain things in a simple way, the slides are so boring and just a bunch of words on a screen. he is a really nice person, and funny but just really bad at explaining things. Also all of the other gen chem teachers gave their quizzes at home, but with this professor he makes you take them in class
Dr. G is a very nice professor, but the lectures and material are quite random and he tends to get off topic a lot. The quizzes are quite difficult, but account for very little of the grade, and exams are not horrible. The lectures themselves are very hard to follow, and the questions asked are often very specific compared to what is talked about.
Olt was a cool guy but an awful teacher. Honestly, being there really didn't make a difference because I didn't learn anything anyway. He is good for meeting outside of class, but that's about it. If you take Olt, just prepare to teach yourself chemistry. This class was harder than Calc 2. Chad's Prep on YouTube and ChatGPT saved me.
