Dr. Remi is extremely kind and accommodating. His lectures are easy to understand and he goes through tough material several times to ensure everyone is on track--this is his downfall. We're very far behind the other class and the exams are falling out of the scope of what he's gone over. I'm worried for the final. Subject is easy if caught up.
He is a very great professor and really loves what he does. However, his tests are very long and you must really know what you are doing to finish on time. He spends a lot of time on one topic and tends to over explain things causing the class to fall behind. Thus, we did not finish every section that was written on the syllabus.
Dr. Remi is incredible and everything about the way his class is organized is perfect. No textbook readings, 1 homework for each unit, and 3 exams. The exams were easy and most of the problems were very similar to the examples we covered in class. Goes slowly to make sure we're understanding (this resulted in us not finishing all the units though).
Prof Remi was awesome! He was very friendly which made it really easy to ask him questions. He will over explain (which makes him much better than other stat 155 profs) but he will stop if given confirmation that the class understands. The only complaint was that I wish we had slightly shorter/less test questions, but it is still easy to do well.
I loved Remi! First teacher at Unc to care about students. Didn't rush through material just to stick to a schedule, made sure we knew what we were doing and why. Study guides and homework matched exams! I actually learned with him despite hating math. great person overall, and an amazing professor. Take his class for stor 155!!
He's such a nice guy who really knows the material, but his exams are extremely difficult and long. Cheat sheets are permitted tho, which is great. Lectures based on guided notes make things easy to follow. Homework felt like busy work a lot of the time and often wasn't helpful for learning the material better.
Prof. Remi over-explains everything to the point where we had to complete learning the final material on our own time over Thanksgiving break because we ran out of time. His "review" of previous material takes over half the class every time and is extremely counterproductive. He does know the material and is passionate about data science.
The class was very straightforward. 3 exams and homework assignments are due every other week. The exams were exactly like the lecture notes from class. Homework was annoying because it was always much more difficult than the tests themselves. As long as you attend lectures and study the notes given, the class is pretty easy!
Pretty easy class if you already know Python beforehand. Tends to overexplain everything making lectures pretty useless IMO. The class is basically the exact same as the textbook
Easy class if you know python already. Nice guy but wildly disorganized. We were behind the whole semester despite him constantly saying not to worry and that we would catch up. Eventually he just created videos and made us watch them by ourselves at the end of the semeseter to make up for the disorganization.
Pretty easy class if you know python. This class was EXTREMELY disorganized. No clear due dates. He overexplains, which led lectures to be kind of pointless and we ended up being behind the entire semester. While he is a nice man, I felt him to be somewhat condescending in class when students asked questions. Took forever to get my grades back.
Prof Remi is super friendly during office hours. If it's your first data science class with no coding experience - it's not easy. The class and syllabus were super disorganized. We had to watch the videos on our own to catch up with the material. Exams are open-book. I hope he changes his time management in the future.
The class is pretty straightforward if you know python already and honestly don't even need to show up to class because the material is pretty self-explanatory. Professor Remi is super caring as a professor but as it was his first semester, he was very unorganized with the schedule but it didn't impact my learning that much.
Remi is the kindest person ever, but bad prof. Only had 6 HWs the whole semester, so was always unprepared for exams. Homework difficult and irrelevant. He explains things incredibly slowly but it is still confusing. Entire grade is pretty much based on 2 midterms and a final. If you do bad on one, your grade is done for.
Remi is a good stats teacher and his passion really showed. We did get behind because he does over explain. Test were just like the review sheets.
Remi is enthusiastic about data science. But he failed to return work, update the syllabus, and upload assignments when he said he would, preventing students from completing assignments on time. Even though he blamed his disorganization on his own poor time management, he was not accommodating of student latenesses due to his inconsistencies.
Remi is great. He provides fill-in-the-blank notes which he fills out along with you and while he talks fast and does have an accent, he literally posts every single class lecture online where you can access whenever. Always pushed back hw and web-assign gives 5 tries per Q. My friends in other stor 155 had to use my notes for their exams.
Absolutely unprofessional. Made this class much more difficult that it needed to be. Constantly spoke about how important respect is but failed to show any to his students through his actions in handling this class.
Probably the easiest class I've taken at UNC, and with an uplifting professor! It had middle school style fill-in-the-blank notes and 4 free unexcused absences before grade was affected. Exams were never surprising b/c Remi followed his own notes/study guides. Grading was lenient; HW was minimal. You're able to get a 100 on almost every assignment.
Dr. Remi's lectures were very long and tedious. He taught the material good but it would be very hard to keep concentrated with him. He has a strong accent, which at times was very entertaining. Tests were just like the in class problems. Homework is insanely long and takes forever. Overall an ok professor.
Very friendly, but lectures were not very beneficial and our class fell behind the others. It was Dr. Remi's first semester at UNC, so I hope this problem doesn't happen in future classes. Work isn't too difficult, especially if you have some coding experience.
Super clear guidelines. Review guides pre-exam were very helpful. He wants you to succeed. Very funny guy as well! Made the concepts seem simple.
I can't recommend Dr. Remi enough, he makes concepts so simple and the exams are literally exactly like the study guide he doesn't try to trick you and you get a full page for a cheat sheet. 4 free unexcused absences, the hw give you 5 tries per question and he drops the lowest 2 hw. Couldn't have picked a better prof for this class
Professor Remi is a nice man, but is unfortunately disorganized at times. However, it was his first semester teaching at UNC so it's understandable. Exams were difficult to complete within 50 minutes while other classes had open note take-home exams. Sometimes, he was slightly condescending during class when questions were asked and through email.
Dr. Remi is a nice guy but doesn't get through the information we need in lectures. The in-class exams test on something entirely different too. I would not recommend taking 120 with him unless you're prepared to teach yourself a lot of the material.
Remi is the best for stor 155. Tests are fair and just like the study guides and homework, he doesn't try to trick you. You also get a cheat sheet. Requires barely any time out of class just 1 homework every ~2-3 weeks and then complete study guide/review notes a day or two before exam.
Dr. Remi is awesome! His lectures are great, engaging, and fun. The material isn't super easy to understand but Dr. Remi makes it enjoyable to learn. Great professor and would 100% take his classes again.
Professor Remi is great!! The material is not easy, but he explains concepts well. The study guides are very similar to the exams and you get a cheat sheet. He is lenient on HW due dates and not a tough grader. Gives fill-in-the blank notes. The exams are hard to complete in 50 mins, but he does give some credit even if you haven't completed it.
This was my first time using Python, and I think Dr. Remi did a good job teaching first time users how to code and then apply that to stats. He takes his time in lectures to repeat key things, which some people feel is repetitive but I thought it was helpful as someone that struggled in the class at first.
Dr. Remi seemed to randomly grade the homework and lab assignments which made it difficult to get feedback on how you are actually doing in the class. He doesn't convey the material well and puts concepts on the exams that were not clearly talked about. You'll have to teach yourself if you take 120 with him.
Dr. Remi was not clear with lectures or material. Half of the time we would not finish the lectures in class and our homework and labs were graded incorrectly. Midterms were graded very harshly and were not very correlated with material learned. He seems like a nice and very knowledgeable guy but I would not recommend taking STOR 120 with him.
Professor Remi is such an amazing professor and his class is so well organized. The exams are exactly like the study guides so it was not difficult to study. We were also allowed a one-sided 'cheat sheet' for every exam. His notes are so helpful! I definitely recommend taking STOR 155 with him!!!
Professor Abayomi is awesome. He is very organized and provides many resources to prepare for exams. 2 midterms and 1 final. Midterms are fair and very similar to the study guide. You will do well if you pay attention in class, watch the recordings (if necessary), review guided module notes, and complete the study guide he provides.
Dr. Remi was a great choice for STOR 120. The midterm exams DO reflect what he lectures about in class for the most part. He explains most things more than once and will almost always ensure the class follows before moving on to the next topic. He is a really caring and passionate guy, and I would 100% take another class with him.
He is the best choice for Stor 155. He reuses so many in class/study guide questions on tests that really reward you if you show up and pay attention. You also get a cheat sheet. I never had to worry about my grade in this class because I showed up and did the study guide before tests
Dr. Remi was a very thorough teacher but was very condescending as a professor. He had very little patience and was rude to students on occasion. While his lectures were thorough, he spent a lot of time explaining simple concepts that everyone already knew.
Dr.Remi is a great professor who takes pride in his ability to help his students be successful in their coursework. He makes difficult concepts easier to understand and is very considerate of students circumstances outside of the classroom.
Dr. Remi was an amazing professor! He teaches passionately, and has a sense of humor. He explained topics with clear and concise real-life examples that made it easier to understand opposed to other stat professors who just throw you the complicated looking formula straight from the text book. He makes stat easy you will not regret taking his class
Professor Remi is great! He makes sure to stop if anyone has questions during the lecture or if he senses the class is not understanding. He uses great real-world examples to help the class remember concepts. My grade could have been better if I studied differently for the first midterm. USE THE STUDY GUIDE/PRACTICE PROBLEMS!
I'm not the best at statistics so I was very cautious to find a good professor before a stats class on. Dr. Remi is the best professor for this, he's straight up, extremely intelligent, has guided notes, and more. He made this class a (somehow) enjoyable 8am class. If you are questioning if you should take his class this is your sign you should!
Excellent professor, and makes introductory statistics fun and comprehensible. We got behind in lecture but this was always accommodated for, rather than leaving us to self-study foreign material. Exams are very fair and have study guides; however, don't ever become complacent or it will reflect in your grade.
Remi is a really good professor he explains so clearly the concepts and will help you out of class if you still have some doubts.
I loved Dr. Remi's class! He is super passionate about what he teaches. His classes were very straight forward and his study guides are extremely helpful for the exams. If you know how to do the study guide questions, you will be prepared for his exams. The homework can be time consuming so I would recommend doing a portion each day.
I see negative reviews for stor 120 so it must be a lot different than stor 155 because the class was so manageable and easy. His exams were completely fair and he taught everything well. Definitely recommend for stor 155
Tests and quizzes are not an unfair percentage of the final grade. Participation and homework still mean a lot which helps cushion your grade. Remi is incredibly passionate and knowledgeable about the subject matter and he explains every topic in depth. Tests and quizzes are easier than the homework so you feel extra prepared.
Dr. Remi is a great professor that was extremely clear on what he expects fro, his students. He always tries to make his lectures entertaining and push students to participate and to ask questions. He is very understanding and eager to improve. His well-rounded knowledge of soccer is a huge plus (he supports Chelsea). Definitely recommend!
Dr. Remi was a great professor really new how to make STOR 155 really fun. Made the class really interesting and made me more interested in statistics.
Not too much outside work and he is a super energetic and thorough lecturer. Would highly recommend.
Remi doesn't explain things well. He always makes mistakes unconsciously in lectures; you will be extremely frustrated if you don't figure it out yourself. Assignments are also confusing, which is even worse if he is not a good lecturer. Be prepared to self-teach if you choose a class with him. NOT going to take any class with him.
While his lectures are slow-paced and often slightly repetitive, his class overall is very easy to follow and does a good job at teaching the basics of statistics. Homework assignments are clearly communicated and not overbearing. I would absolutely recommend Dr. Remi for this class, I feel as though he has taught very well.
I appreciate how he takes his lectures slowly as that is unlike many other math or statistics classes. This makes it easy to understand the material and I don't have to spend much time outside of class teaching myself. His tests are also fair if you study and pay attention in class. He is also engaging in lectures and makes class more enjoyable.
Professor Abayomi is one of the best Professors I have had. He is a great lecturer and the problems provided prepare you well for his exams. Some say he is repetitive, but he repeats topics that are important to your foundation in statistics. In STEM classes this is a luxury, most professors would cover a topic once (or not at all).
Probably only has such a high rating because his homework and tests are so easy. But the lectures are hard to follow and have no clear learning path
Dr. Remi is an amazing professor who truly wants you to get your money's worth out of the course. Even though this class is a lot of material, he tries his best to condense the information for anyone to understand. Can be a bit hard to follow sometimes, but overall is the best option for stor 120.
He makes jokes in class, and actually cares and answers questions in multiple ways to make sure you understand the material. 8 homework assignments total, throughout the entire course, about 20 questions each- very doable and understandable to what we are learning. Tests are worth abt 75%, but he preps you well (do study guides!). Def take him!!!
Dr. Remi is an excellent professor and was very thorough in ensuring that we understood the lesson materials. He would make sure that we understood a concept before moving on and encouraged questions and concerns. I could tell that he cared about students' wellbeing and took his role as an educator seriously.
prob one of the best teachers I've had as a freshman. He explains EVERYTHING so students are able to follow his classes and makes sure students really know what they're doing by going back to old material while teaching new material. Tests were very fair. Many laughs in this class, a non stressful course, gonna miss this class next semester!
Dr. Remi made me care about statistics and I am not a math person, nor am I a statistics lover. It is clear he cares about his students and his work.
Remi is easily one of the best professors at UNC! He is routinely disciplined, intelligent, and very caring. Strict with deadlines, but with good intentions. I had Remi as a professor during his first semester at UNC (he was great)--he has grown significantly! He is organized & communicative while retaining his kind heart and sense of humor.
Dr. Remi was amazing! Dr. Remi gave amazing lectures and provided plenty of examples that made the concepts so much easier. He also had very clear grading criteria and exams were straightforward. He was obviously passionate about what he was teaching and wanted his students to succeed. Highly recommend him for STOR-155!
Dr. Remi has been the best professor Ive taken a class with at UNC. His lectures are clear, interesting and fun. He wants the best for his students, is easy to contact and is by the book when it comes to grading and exams. He makes the work easy to understand and links it to real world examples. I will most definitely take another class with him.
Dr. Remi is a hilarious guy and makes this class fun. Strongly recommend his STOR-113 class to those applying to the b-school over MATH152, especially those who are not the best at math/calc. He reviews algebra at the beginning and takes all material very slowly. His main priority is that the students understand. I suck at math and got an A-.
He does not remove two of the lowest grades in our grade books.
Had great lecture notes that made homework fairly easy. Offers plenty of office hours if you are confused. Posts completed notes so missing a lecture isn't the end of the world. Would definitely recommend for STOR120.
Good teacher and super easy class. Very easy and low effort homework, midterms, and final. Got an A+ on everything with minimal effort. This class gives me breathing room for more demanding classes. Good lectures too if you're genuinely interested in statistics.
Dr. Remi is quite caring for his students, though he could be stubborn sometimes. Most learning are through his lectures which is quite fast paced, so pay close attention during class. The exams have 2 parts, in-class multiple choice and after-class coding. I would say the coding parts are easier than the statistic-focused in-class parts.
I took Remi for STOR 155 and STOR 120 and he was great in both! He really cares about his students and is knowledgable about data science. Remi makes sure you understand basic concepts rather than focusing on the small details. He is strict about deadlines, but if you stick to them there shouldn't be any issues.
If you make a mistake he will not allow you to correct it and has no grade space.
Remi was a good professor. Be prepared to study and review lectures! He was very accessible outside of class.
I think the class has helped me learn a lot. However, the class meets four times a week, with only 2 unexcused absences, which is kind of insane. It is also A TON OF WORK. Like kind of a crazy amount. He assigns take home midterms and in class misters, so if you have any other homework or exams, balancing them will be difficult.
Remi is the goat. He is an amazing teacher and an even better human. Despite having big classes, he cares about every student and is easy to reach outside of class. I'm not a stats major, but I hope to take another class with him one day. He definitely knows how to teach the content in an easy-to-learn way. Take any class with him.
Dr. Remi was a great professor and lecturer! His exams were 60% multiple choice, 40% written. He gives a study guide before each exam that is helpful. He also allows a 1 sided cheat sheet for each exam, and both sides for the final. Definitely recommend.
Dr. Remi uses lots of examples, which helps bring some life into the material and make lecture interesting. He's careful to clearly explain difficult concepts to avoid confusion. His guided notes and study guides are great when you have to study for exams. Dr. Remi is also a friendly guy and seems to always be in a good mood for class.
Easiest class I have ever taken. The homework is pretty much the exact same as the exams. I always struggled with paying attention during lectures but still managed to get a 100% on one of the midterms. The attendance grade is incredibly generous.
I learned so much in this class and it definitely challenged me. Professor Remi is a wonderful professor and cares about all of his students. He challenges his students, but his class is do-able with a lot of practice. I would not recommend taking this class with a lot of other demanding classes.
Take this with him!!! He is so nice and cares for his students. Tests are just like the study guides and quizzes
Love remi! he is great and is very clear about grading and what he expects of you. not a difficult course if you stay on top of your work. only 8 hw assignments for whole year, 2 midterms, final exam. gives a lot of study resources that will prepare you VERY well for the exams if you do them(DO THEM).
STOR120 is an easy class, especially if you have prior statistics/python experience. Most lectures consisted of him re-explaining the same things over and over, which got pretty boring after a while. He seems nice enough, but I will say he does come off as a bit condescending when answering questions from students. Just an okay professor IMO.
The class is demanding and time-consuming, but Dr. Remi makes expectations clear at the beginning and provides helpful resources (lectures/notes posted online, accessible outside of class). There are 12 homework assignments, 11 labs, 2 in-class and 2 take-home midterms, and a 3-hour final. Pay attention and it will work out.
His written portion of the exams are easy, but the multiple choice make it to where its so easy to miss a few but they count for a lot. He makes class fun which is important!
Dr. Remi is always respectful and fair to all his students. I was originally scared as someone who had never taken a stats class before, but his lectures made it so easy and he is willing to meet with you outside of class to answer questions. Although his homework deadlines are strict, he is very understanding and wants to help you succeed!
Dr. Remi is the sweetest. He made lectures engaging and easier to understand. The homework didn't seem like a lot, but towards the second half of the semester, it piled up. It was also very time consuming. There is no extra credit!
Professor Remi is a great professor who really seems like he enjoys what he teaches. Took his class in the summer but the work didn't seem like too much. Very reasonable and the tests were manageable. Very respectful of student's times. He made statistics understandable and provided many examples with opportunities to ask questions!
not a good teacher for STOR320; didn't grade final project EDA part as stated on the requirements/rubric(ie. rubric said to use table or graph for each question; deducted points on putting only a table or only a graph and said in class that it is because only one table or graph is not enough; argued but didn't work); TA too strict for hw/analysis
He doesn't care if you fail or pass. He won't take extra time with you outside the classroom because “he's busy”. Not a very good professor if you have to get any extra help. I did this all on my own because he wouldn't help me in any way.
Hard to understand. Accent is so thick that I was left wondering what he was trying to say. It was online which made it that much harder to understand. He's extremely cocky. Felt like he was mansplaining everything with an attitude that he was better than the class. Math is not easy and he didn't help this. I suggest finding a different teacher.
Prof. Remi is really nice and makes this class easy to understand. The material gets more difficult once the statistics part starts, but it is not bad.
His teaching style is very engaging so time flies by in class. The content he teaches is interesting and he often draws illustrations on the board to help you visualize and better understand the material. He is clear with what he expects from you, reviewing outside of class, submitting labs/homework on time, etc. Definitely recommend!
Overall I think Dr. Remi is a good professor and I believe the exams are fairly easy. However, when it comes to asking questions about the content or meeting with him during office hours he is very discouraging and almost looks down at you for asking a simple question. On top of that some weeks we would be piled with so much work and assignments.
Dr. Remi is very smart, but he is not good at teaching the things he knows to others. As a student with no coding background, this class is very hard and Dr. Remi does not provide sufficient support to help you succeed. He does not respond to emails and is not approachable to ask questions, saying we would know had we paid attention in class.
He presents himself as accessible but isn't. He shames students for asking questions, making them feel inadequate, and seems to view students as haters. The workload is excessive, because is 4 credit course you'll be finishing a take-home exam and multiple homework assignments at once. It feels like he prioritizes his ego over student success.
This class is just a cheap knockoff of UC Berkeley's Data8—he's stealing their work word by word and claims it as his own. At times he would switch the states from CA to NC to not make it as obvious. If you want to get a feel of how the class would be I encourage you to look it up, and practice. You'll pass the class with flying colors!
Hardest 4-credit class I've taken at UNC (even compared w/ chemistry + physics). Workload and expectations are disproportionate for an intro level. He spends significant time overexplaining/ complicating straightforward concepts, while breezing through the difficult coding. No grades are dropped and no curves.
Beware of this class! It is insanely challenging for an intro-level course. There are no HW/lab drops or curves. You could be on your deathbed and Dr Remi still would not give you an extension. Never answers emails and talks down to you during office hours and when asking questions in class. Goes indepth on easy concepts, but breezes by hard ones.
He says he's accessible, but he'll shame you for asking for help and make you think you're asking dumb questions. He argues that ‘it's 4 credits, so it's hard,' as if we signed up for boot camp. In his mind, students are the enemy, I guess we declared war by enrolling. Good luck surviving his battlefield of homework and take-home exams!
Be prepared to hear, ‘Are you following the story?' and ‘This is very, very crucial,' along with gems like, ‘I'm already making my money; I don't care if you learn or not,' and, ‘In my side of the world, we did it this way...' all shouted at 8 a.m. on a Monday. If you don't need it, don't take it.
We took our final exam on Friday but we still haven't received our grades. He was extremely rude to people who asked questions and he frames his final coding section with things we aren't familiar with and expects you to be able to complete it in 3 hours along with the multiple-choice section
The class isn't too hard, but the grading can be ridiculously meticulous at times. However, this is a great course for learning python and statistics.
Take STOR 155 instead if you can, it is much easier. Got the worst grade of my entire UNC career, and I've taken chem and calc ll. In-class MC never reflects what we're learning and awards no drops for HWs, even though there are over 25 assignments. Also, emailed him more than two weeks ago and still haven't gotten a response. This guy is bad news.
If you put in the work and time to really learn the course material, you'll do fine (think a few hours each week). However, the grading criteria isn't very specific, so there are many loopholes he can (and will) use to deduct points. Also, when going to office hours, he doesn't try to answer questions but makes you find out the problem on your own.
Extremely unaccommodating professor. Offers no extensions or drops on homework assignments, regardless of the circumstances, which makes the course unnecessarily stressful. Communication is a major issue—they rarely respond to emails, and when they do, the tone often comes off as rude or dismissive.
Old review got removed because I did not speak graciously enough about our lord and savior Dr. Remi. This class was not fun and he barely taught stats yet all the exams are about statistics. Take 155 instead. Also, if you ask a question in class he responds very condescendingly.
Overall, Dr. Remi was a good professor. Although this class has a lot of homework, it was relatively manageable. If you didn't take AP Stats in high school then this may be a difficult class. It is taught in python but you are expected to understand basic statistical concepts. I would recommend taking the class with him.
The class itself is useful, but the grading was unnecessarily nit-picky. The professor was egotistical and unwilling to answer any questions or provide any sort of help. They spoke with an air of superiority and disrespect that I've never received from any other human being. I've never cried so much over a class. Do not take this class.
He is a good teacher and explains things clearly. However, he assigns a lot of work, sometimes not in a timely manner. You might have homework and midterms due in the same week.
The worst professor i meet in unc. The lectures were unclear, yet we were overloaded with assignments . The professor made no effort to support students, making the course feel unfair and needlessly difficult.
Very mid lecture. Easy content, but the harsh grading makes the class harder than it needs to be.
Dr. Remi is an amazing lecturer; he explains concepts very well & repeats important ones we should know. However, he is a ghost outside of lectures. Never responds to emails & is not accommodating. I was one correct question away from getting an A- but he didn't even respond to my email about bumping me up. Make sure you have friends in this class.
Dr. Remi's personality made it worth it to take an 8am statistics class. He is a charming guy, and likes joking with his students. He taught pretty slowly- but only because he wanted to give everyone a chance to understand the material in this course. The workload for this class is very managable, and we had cheat sheets on the midterms/final.
Dr. Remi is a very funny and good teacher. He has a no nonsense mindset though, so don't be suprised when he doesn't give any leeway around late work. The course content is not that hard, but you need to actually put in work learning it yourself if you want to crush this class. Got by doing sort of the bare minimum and got an A-
Does not respond to emails.
Very fun, approchable professor. Passionate about teaching and patient at explaning stuff to you. I feel he is too lax in this course. There are only 4 homeworks over the semester (each takes 0.5-1h to do) and there are not enough exercises provided to master the class.
I loved this class. Dr. Abayomi makes sure no one is left behind when teaching new content. He is very nice and didn't make it feel like an 8 AM. SQL is a straightforward language and has some cool nuances. Not that much work outside of class so can't complain. Exams aren't too bad and you have a cheat sheet too.
