He has high expectations from your work. There is A LOT of writing required and a portfolio that is due for review at the end of the semester. He relates to his students and makes the class intresting. I would take him again anytime!
It's an english class so there is A LOT of writing. He is extremely helpful! Assignments are heavily based on the Chicana/o community (but its a chicana/o course). If you do well on the papers, your portfolio is pretty much set.
he is funny and out going! he is very helpful and fun!
He gives about 4-5 papers, one of which is a research paper (HUGE DEAL!) Since this is a writing class you can definitely expect to write a lot. It's not too difficult, just be prepared to read and write! Attendance is a MUST since so much is covered every meeting.
ok dont listen to anyones info except mine, HE IS THE BEST TEACHER IVE EVER HAD, on the first day of class he sits u in a circle and u get to meet ur fellow classmates, how cool is that... so now u already have a buddy system also he is VERY lenient, oh and if his class is full he will still add u, he doesn't ever say no to anyone wanting to join
I notice that people only care if he is easy, and he is don't get me wrong, but he is also an amazing professor that makes you think outside the box. He challenges the status-quo and gives you something to go home with at the end of the semester. I have taken him twice, and plan to take him again!
He is a good professor, really easy- just do the papers and some reading. He isn't really clear when it comes to giving the essay assignments, you kinda have to figure it out yourself. Also requires that a tutor from the CHS department look over each of your papers.
He is really hot!! And easy loved him and i would take his class again.
The class was very easy. The literature that we had to read was cool and interesting. I learned a lot. Oh yeah and read!!!!
Very good professor, but takes a while to get stuff back to you. Made me think outside of the box, challenged me, but most people in the class just fell asleep because he is TOO nice. Omar, I think you need to be a little more strict and crank out the whip sometimes! Letting people turn in their work until the last day of class - not cool!
He keeps you interested in the material. His projects and writing assignments are relevant to what is being taught in class. He is very helpful and makes directions clear.
His a very nice guy. You have to read the material, you can pass by not reading, but i recommend you read. I read all the material and got an A. He grades easy. As long as you turn in a paper you can get an A. Attendance not mandatory and we watch a lot f movies.
Professor Omar is a down to earth guy. He assigns a lot of readings that you should do if you want to get good grades on your papers and on the discussions. He?s really chill and I highly recommend you take this class with him. From our class we took a written mid term and final and had like 4 four papers to do which went in a class portfolio.
Omar's a young guy, you might mistake him for a student, but he's also very knowledgeable in his field. He's cool, very laidback, and approachable. His style of teaching is entertaining and straightforward. He is lenient with work, and does not give much of it. It's especially nice since you have other classes to worry about. I'd take him again.
Professor Gonzalez was one of the best English teachers i have ever had. Not only are his lectures interesting, but the work he assigns are challenging in a good way. I highly recommend taking this class. You will get your moneys worth!
The best professor in CSUN. He gives a lot of helps and novels read in class are useful. He is extremely helpful to international student. Have to take his class!!!
He is the best professor this is my second semester taking him and his classes have been very interesting he not only makes the subject interesting but easy as well. I really recommend him what I loved about him was the fact that he just wanted us to learn he just like me thinks grades are dumb.
he is an awsome guy who loves his job, he makes the class very interesting and easy, no tests or quizzes, assigns interesting novels, shows lots of educational videos, he is a greatt professor and a very kind, helpful man... i miss his class!!!
Cool professor, required reading of novels and a few 2 page papers. The final was a powerpoint group presentation. It was extremely easy and if he teaches a fri and sat class, dont worry most sat classes will be cancelled either by furloughs or by him.Take as a 5th class or for gpa boost. So take him and learn alot about Chicano history.
BEST TEACHER IN THE WORLD!!! took his friday and saturday course. Was mostly Friday classes. Read the novels and write the papers it is simple. Class discussions are funny and interesting. i learned a lot from him.
Im in Omar's class this year (Fall 2010) and i honestly am very glad i chose him. he really loves his job, he's so chill and funny at the same time, just write everything he gives you early and you'll be fine. no tests no quizzes just papers. (not my best thing) but over all great class and SI Class was great as well <3 sad to leave :(
Professor Omar has to be one of the best teachers at CSUN. At first I was disappointed I was stuck with a Friday and Saturday class, but as his classes went on, I was actually glad I got him. Class discussions are interesting and Omar is a very nice person. Take him if you get the chance!
Great teacher. He is very understanding and resourceful. Although this class requires a lot of reading and writing, I would pick this professor or any other. He knows what he's talking about. You just have to keep up with him.
He is awesome! He does not care if you turn something in late, but i suggest you do because it is a lot of work and it can catch up to you especially close to the end.
Professor Gonzalez is one of the best professors i've had. He is very clear and understanding and does care about his students. There is a lot of work to be done but nothing that anyone can not manage. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
OMG great teacher, helps you alot HIGHLY RECO. !!!!
Very engaging, helpful, and kind. Passionate about what he teaches. He makes sure that the entire class is on the same page and always answers questions. He makes you think, work, and improve. Great sense of humor and stories. My class would've been better if ppl participated more, so dont be afraid to speak up!
He is an amazing professor that doesn't just teach but builds a great communication with his students. Not just teacher but will become a good friend.
OMAR is seriously the best teacher I have had EVER! His class was phenomenal from day one, It was never a hassle for me to show up. He is great as a professor and as a person...I really miss his class and all the books we read, that I'm actually reading some of the books again... And I dont "like" to read so that says alot.
Very Easy Teacher, its a fun class to attend and shows him that you do care and are serious. he cares a lot for his stuydents and if you have trouble talk to him, hell see what he can do. hell let you turn in some of your work in late which is a good thing because he does tend to ask for a lot of writing since we do a lot of reading I Reccomend him
Professor Gonzalez is a really engaging and fun professor. He has a lot of insight in his lectures and his discussions. Good person to talk to also, so if you need a professor to talk with about things, he's your guy. Do the work, always participate in discussions because they are interesting, and just have fun in his class. You won't regret it.
Omar is the the sickest guy. His class is very fun, interactive and easy. Also, he was 20 cats which and many stories about Texas that are amusing. If you have a chance to take his class, you really should.
Profé Gonzalez is the guy to take for CHS 202! He is honestly so nice, fun and caring. He will introduce to you many current events that are so interesting and you've never noticed before. Really easy, show up and just be ready to discuss. Dude changed my life!
Profe Gonzalez is AMAZING! He is by far one of my favorite professors! TAKE HIM. I promise, you will not regret it :)
Prof Gonzalez is amazing, sweet and caring. He is insightful and always willing to help. He makes you watch a lot of videos that are so interesting and current events, and write a couple paragraphs about what you thought. If you need to take this class I would highly recommend you take HIM! Do the assignments and readings, guaranteed A.
Omar is amazing! Not a hard grader at all. He speaks from his heart. He does not sugar coat anything. I love him and his way of teaching! Very helpful !
Professor Gonzalez made my transition to college a good one. He gives good advice ranging from writing to real life problems. He is one of the nicest professors and he is so funny! I had a lot of fun in his class. His assignments are easy as long as you read. His lectures basically sums up the books and he wants participation.
Profe Omar is one of the nicest humans you will ever meet. His lectures have so much meaning. Read the books and his lectures will explain them. Get ready to write. He will guide you the whole way. Participate! He's so funny!
Professor Gonzalez is a very down to earth individual. Do the readings, participate and you'll get an easy "A."
Professor Gonzales is one of the best professors I have encountered in CSUN. His class is extremely easy and fun. He keeps the class interesting and very simple. Took him for a three hour class and although, he usually takes the whole class time the three hours go flying. I recommend taking the three hour class !!!
He's the best!! Take him!! Such a fun and easy class. The class is fun and entertaining. There are no tests and just 3 papers due over the semester which are SUPER easy! His 3 hour class felt like an hour. You need to get a lot of books for his class and most of them are avaliable for free in the public library. TAKE HIM!! EASY A
His class is an easy A if you just put in the effort. Great professor, except he can be very unclear about due dates which did become problematic for the entire class at one point. Other than that everything was entirely doable. 3 extra credit papers that are 2 pages each single spaced, 1 midterm, and a final he let's you complete with your groups.
Never there on his office hours and gets off topic. This class was a waste of time.
He's an amazing professor!
He's very nice and can be fun to listen to, but can be very unorganized. He gives many assignments at once and constantly changes their requirements. If you skip a class you could miss an important detail he spontaneously added to an assignment. He's also not always reliable in putting an assignment up when it is "due". This was a stressful class.
If you want a class you will learn and enjoy he is the right professor for you.
I am taking one of his classes and honestly I regret it so much. He's one of those horrible people who think they know, and are right about everything. He takes it personally if you disagree with him. He's honestly really weird. He's really disorganized, and doesn't explain well at all, it honestly feels like he makes everything up as he goes along
His lectures were entertaining and informative but he would sometimes go off topic. He assigns a lot of books that pretty easy to read but takes up a lot of time. When he assigns papers the requirements change so much its hard to know what exactly he wants in the paper, it was frustrating. To make this class easy for you just read and pay attention
He assigns too much work that he ends up not even grading most of them. a couple of papers throughout the semester based on books and latino culture. he does not post grades until the semester is over so you do not know what you have until you're done with the class which is terrible. no quizzes or tests or final. easy A.
This professor seems passionate in this subject & his class is an easy A. As long as you show up to class, do his assignments, & read you'll be fine. However, he constantly gets out of topic, does not reply to emails, will bring up pop quizzes when he sees a lot of students missing, & has confusing due dates (never consistent).
Not organized at all. Assigns papers without complete directions. Says he puts up canvas prompts when he doesnt. Probably an easy A but he still hasn't put up grades.
He's unorganized and doesn't post his assignments up until the last possible minute. He strays off topic. He has an attitude and is dramatic. I would not take his class again.
He is super cool. The assignments are pretty easy and all the projects that we were assigned we got class time to start and do them. He talks over when everything should be due. He is super kind and really nice to talk too. You can see that he is really interested in the subject. Book assignments have really good book choices. Would recommend easyA
Horrible professor. I would not recommend him to anyone! Although class is an easy A and lectures can be engaging, he is just terrible. Constantly goes off topic and makes inappropriate refrences. Very opinionated and judgemental. VERY UNORGANIZED. Posts assignments last minute and does not answer emails.
Profe. Gonzalez is super great! His class is very easy and he is very passionate. He welcomes open discussion in his class, which makes it really fun. You have a paper that you work on step by step together and you have group quizzes. Super easy A and a fun class!
I don't get the negative reviews, this teacher was honestly really cool. Yes opinionated, but fun to have debates with. He can take and make jokes. I hate reading but some book choices were honestly so good. Just read and pay attention to what he says. You work in groups with most stuff which makes the A even easier. Text him don't email
I was quite excited to take this class. Now I never want to taker another Chicano class again
Overall this professor is really chill, but he is also very unorganized and he had to cancel some assignments because of this but that was a good thing for me at least. You will be in a group the whole semester. And there is a research paper due towards the end of the semester but he will go step-by-step on it so it isn't as bad as it seems.
Prof Gonzalez is especially opinionated and is quick to shut down students for their views. The class is fairly easy as long as you show up. He has the tendency to assign work and forget about it later. I would strongly suggest you choose a different Chicano studies teacher, I will never take another Chicano studies class after this.
This was by far one of my favorite lower division classes I took! Profe really made the clases entertaining. The assignments were fairly easy and participating in class is a big help. If he recognizes you for participating a lot, he tends be more informative with helping you boost your grade
Though the class got a little unorganized because of COVID, that wasnt the professors fault. The last couple weeks had to be moved online so Omar made assignments easier for the class. I dont get the negative posts here, I found Omar to be very approachable. We had a few group projects and though it was an easy A, I felt that I did learn a lot.
This class was fair, you arent assigned that many assignments in the beginning but at the end of the semester you do get assigned around 3 papers. You do watch many films in this class and have small discussions. Overall I did enjoy this class even though he isnt as organized, and sometimes is hard to reach when you have questions.
He is very cool to talk to. Love his lectures. He talks about real-life issues in the Chicanx society and in general. Loves it when people have cameras on. Participate or else it affects your grade and we didn't know that. Please follow the syllabus because he is unorganized with his own work. Doesn't know his own due dates.
Take him ! Hes the best , he makes the lectures interesting it mostly consist of documentaries and movies . Small writing assignments and a group midterm .
Nice, funny professor, but you never really learn anything about Chicano studies. Most of the time we just watched movies and talked about current events. Also cancelled classes pretty often.
Felt more like a queer studies class than a chicano studies class. Professor and the class were alright if you showed up. Syllabus is decorative b/c it was never followed. Major projects consisted of a personal essay, a research paper, a letter, and a group project which was out final. Take someone else if you can but this prof wasn't the worst.
As a freshman, I honestly thought the professor and class were pretty easy and entertaining. The impacted assignments (portfolio) for this course consisted of a personal essay, a research paper, a letter, and a group project. The assignments were EASY, and he showed various LGBT films. FYI these films weren't even uncomfortable. Easy A.
this class was easy but i dont think i would take him again. he was unorganized and he offered extra credit but would forget about it and never put it in the gradebook. you'll have writing assignments which will be added in your portfolio at the end of the semester so definitely stay on top of those assignments. no exams or quizzes
Great professor. Easy and fun class. Very knowledgeable.
This professor is AMAZING, for the basic conformers don't bother taking him because you won't know how to appreciate his genius and approach. He made this class interesting and engaging. He teaches about the intersectionality of the Chicano/a identity, we don't live in a vacuum and it is important to consume the material as you would life.
Profe was great. You can tell he's incredibly passionate about his field. Learned a lot about queerness and intersectionality that I wouldn't have been able to get off the internet & stuff. Overall gained appreciation and respect for chicano studies. Lenient and sympathetic about deadlines and students' lives. Hard to get ahold of through email tho
I feel like I gained a lot from this class and professor. Super passionate and knowledgeable, infuses great sources and information into his course. You write a few essays, but they are pretty open to your interpretation with a few standard guidelines. 1 group project that's fun and easy to do.
LOVED this guy. Really great at creating a sense of community in the class, posted all of the course reading & films so you didn't have to buy anything and was really understanding about turning stuff in late. I wrote a research paper on trans film that he offered to help me edit for publishing and the final was a ZINE. Perfect, no notes!!!
Lots of reading and group assignments. Extremely forgiving and nice if he notices that you're trying your best. Kinda scattered and doesn't follow the syllabus.
Overall a great professor. Does not want to make students lives difficult and is very understanding. He can be a little unpredictable. Will assign work then change his mind. Does not give feedback on papers but is also not grading harshly
all you gotta know is that this guy identifies as a 2 spirit
VERY UNORGANIZED, he would go off topic very often. I had high expectations for this class, hoping I would learn more about my Chicano heritage, instead I learned about the LGBT community. A lot of the literature and movies you will watch in class were more related to the LGBT community than the Chicano studies.
For the most part the class is easy, assignments are easy and grading isn't too bad. However I often leave class bitter. The professor talks more about lgbt issues than Chicano studies. He's a very far left person politically and anyone who disagrees he makes feel pretty bad or stupid. He is gay and thats fine but there's no need for all that.
Took this professor awhile back, he doesn't follow curriculum. He focuses on queer issues rather than Chicano Culture. You will watch and read lots of queer stuff. He is going to quiz you on how uncomfortable you are watching these borderline orn videos. Overall an easy class, but he should teach something else.
Professor Gonzalez was extremely funny and kind. He gave great feed back on work submitted class was a breeze as long as you follow along with the dates work should be done by.
Very Unprofessional. Super rude to students. Most of the times its super unclear his lectures
Mr. Gonzalez usually shows up late to class and doesn't send emails when he will be missing class , having students wait about 30 minutes for a no show. His lectures are confusing and tend to be all over the place and usually left with confusion. At times he projects and talks to the class in an unprofessional way . I don't recommend !
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR, FIND ANOTHER ONE!! lectures so unclear. you will ask him one question for clarification & will change up directions & leave you even more confused. never prepared for lectures. so rude not respectful at all. calls you out & makes you feel stupid. never posts assignments, says he will but doesnt then wants it next day.
Isn't a bad professor at all but I do get one of the reviews of him not actually teaching about Chicano issues. Doesn't really answer emails, grading is weird but does sometimes accept late work. There's around 5 assignments throughout the whole year and then 3 "big" assignments for the final. Also go to lectures, does not post any info on canvas.
Prof. Gonzalez doesn't teach chicano studies at all, if you're looking to learn about your hertiage go elsewhere. Most of your work relates to LGBTQ+ issues, which I don't have an issue with but im just confused about the relevancy of it. If I had wanted to learn about LGBTQ+ history I would have taken that, haven't learned anything relevant to me.
Lectures are all over the place, very passionate abt what he talks about in class, thought I signed up for queer studies since that's all he ever talks about in a chicano studies class, never responds to texts/emails, the semester goes by & you don't even know your grade in that class, assigns random work. Very messy class. Don't recommend.
He's a funny professor but also brutally honest. He does have his class labeled as CH S but then teaches more about LBTQIA+. Probably won't get a response back because he's "busy" but does answer in-class. I would say the grading is fair. Watched clips and movies for assignments. Also, it was mainly group related work.
Look he is easy just keep up with homework we only read one book and honestly you don't even need to read it then we did have to do 2 presentations and the professor talked a lot about like LQBTQ plus things which was surprising but he ends up relating it back to chicano studies. We have done less than 3 major essays but even those are easy kind of
Bad habit of having either unclear assignments or forgetting to upload stuff, you'd receive a prompt if you were in the class, it not be on canvas, and then them remembering it existed months later. Prof. Gonzalez was also really inaccessible outside of class. Content in the class is more alt. hist like LGBTQ and not stuff like Serna. V Porales,
