Gives lots of reading assignments, but also gives exam questions ahead of time. World history class is chock fulla information.
So here is the deal.. She is a genius, and her lectures are very intellectual. If you take clear notes, her tests are awesome. She gives a study guide, so as long as you know the info, its easy. Hard info = easy exams. Great course!
Shes very straightforward about the midterm, paper and the final. Go to class. You can not miss lecture. Not that much reading for an upper div history class. Get to know her, she'll go the extra mile for you. Fairly easy if you are motivated.
Great professor bar none. Be ready to be challenged in a good way.
She is a wonderful teacher that makes you want to come to class, she involves the class and invites questions. Would defenitely take anothe class from her if offered
She has changed my life around, if you're used to haveing profs just teach what is in the book or on Fox news or CNN, be prepared for some real mind-rust removal with her. She really makes you think, I mean really, very challenging, she lets you decide if you wanna think for yourself.
She is an intense lecturer but teaches you so much! She wants you to learn so she does plenty of reviewing for the exams. I loved this class.
Professor Al-Shakry is very knowledgable, but her lectures are incredibly boring. She just sits and reads off her lecture notes like she's reading us a book. It's non-stop note-taking, but her tests were very easy in comparison.
she's very intelligent - teaches her class like a Religious class on Islam, first and then moves into modern history, focus on Egypt. excellent.
Boring class, history of Islam and Egypt. Only modern stuff is Egypt and Palestinian filmmaking with absolutely no historical context. Study guide is given before exam but grading is ridiculous. A terrible intro to the Middle East.
Don't miss lecture; the tests are based almost entirely on lecture, not the reading. Good class. Did a very credible job of beginning to understand a vast topic in a very short period of time. Would have liked a little more on modern times, because they're the ones that confuse me the most.
This woman is brilliant! Yes there is a lot of reading (even for a history class) but she is one of the smartest professors I've ever had at UC Davis. Just make sure you're interested in the material if you sign up for a class because her teaching style can be rather monotone, but it's all very interesting.
Too hard for me. I am interested in the subject but her lectures are so boring that it's hard to keep up. Add to that the many readings that she assigns. It's often like two readings per week. The essays are okay and the finals are about pretty basic stuff.
If you're only interested in learning about Mid East history, as in how it pertains to today's events, do not take this class. This is a philosophy/literature class, much of which is focused on Egypt & Algeria. If you seek a bit of a challenge in this area however, take the class. She's brilliant & will make you think in so many differernt ways.
Professor El Shakry is an extremely intelligent woman, who knows her field quite well. Note that sometimes her vocabulary leaves you feeling a little elementary, and that she throws a ton of material at you in her lectures. Don't be discouraged; everything comes together by the time you need to write a paper.
Professor El Shakry really knows her subject and tries to cover so much material in depth. I promise your hand will be aching at the end of lecture from trying to take notes. While there's a lot of reading, her lectures clarify a lot of it so that as long as you attend lecture you should pass the class.
great!!!!!!!!!!
She uses too much jargon in her lectures, so she is hard to follow but she is cool in office hours. Reading is intense. Expect a book a week, at least. Grading is fair, but the assignments are tedious as she tries to put creative spins on them. Proceed with caution.
El Shakry is the best professor at UCD, hands down. Amazingly intelligent. Gorgeus. I have never encountered the subject the way she has approached it. Her class awakened me to all sorts of new ideas. One paper, one midterm, one final. Easy ass grader. And BRILLIANT! like no joke...love her! I was actually sad when class ended.
She knows her subject very well, but is scatterbrained during lecture and goes off on tangents constantly. She also "uh"s and "um"s which really kill the flow of lecture. Reading is a lot, but interesting, and the class is cool but be prepared for confusion the first couple weeks as you adjust to her strange mannerisms.
Professor El-Shakry is VERY easy on the eyes. Besides being very attractive woman she is an intellectual and genuinely pours all her energy into every lecture she gives to leave a lasting imprint in your memory of how important history is to the present. Her middle eastern classes are BOMB!!!
El Shakry makes you questions the linearity of history. Her class is not limited to memorization of events. You must attend every class in order to do well on the final and midterm. There is one 8-10 page paper. She is very helpful in office hours to clarify terms discussed. She gives study guides to exams. Highly recommend her!
Have to come each class because her lectures are VERY in depth and there is no textbook. A book/long article per week required, but you can manage only reading some. Gives an AMAZING study guide and is really helpful during office hours. one term paper, one midterm, one final, all graded pretty easily. Awesome professor overall. Will take her again
A brilliant professor, very humble, pleasant.
Professor El Shakry is a great lecturer. Her classes are fairly easy as long as you attend lecture and skim the readings. She is very helpful if you attend her office hours.
She's an amazing professor! Very intelligent and sophisticated. She speaks very fast so be ready. Also, she jumps quickly from topic to topic so it can be difficult to follow lecture but you will adjust to her teaching style. VERY helpful in office hours and easy grader since the material is very complex. I definitely recommend her!
Awesome. Helpful. Organized. One midterm, one final, one 8-10 page paper. Passionate about the material and knows it well. I probably majored in history because I enjoyed learning from her so much.
Her class is all about Egypt. Middle East has only one state and that is Egypt. Teaches fast, alot, and you don't need to know all. Learn about Egypt you are A, what I did and got A.
I'm still not sure whether I like this class. Expect to read a book each week. The midterm and final are geared more toward what she covered in lecture, while the 8-10 page paper allows you to use the readings more. Pretty lenient grader - I was 100% sure that I failed the midterm, but I ended up with a 93%. Still not quite sure how that happened.
This class make me realize I made the right choice in becoming a history major. I highly recommend this class. Brilliant professor and super interesting. I'll be taking more of her classes for sure.
Very knowledgeable, very caring, and generous grading system. She allows for many grade buffers if you don't do well on the midterm and papers. The material is very relevant; however, her lectures can get a little overwhelming at times. Recommended professor.
Great professor. Easy class, go to lectures because she hands out the study guides in person. she gives you the midterm and final beforehand and answers are derived from the lectures.
This woman is absolutely brilliant. Lectures are very dense, but attend each one and pay close attention to small details and an easy A will follow. Exams are handed out in advance and a lot of detail is expected but the way she presents the material stimulates you in so many ways. Favorite class ALL YEAR
BRILLIANT professor. She is very clear and so knowledgable. Exams are given in advance so you prepare well. If you attend to lecture, and skim the books, you'll do just fine!
Easily one of the best professors at Davis. Her class is really clear and easy. Just go to office hours and you will do well
Love her, great professor. By far, my favorite history professor! She gives study guides of exactly what will be on MT and Final. She's very helpful and sweet. She's good at remembering names. Her way of teaching history is so interesting and I really enjoyed her class. I recommend you take it! Esp. if your a history major.
I love history. But she teaches history from a very biased perspective and makes no effort to hide her bias. But this is California after all. Easy class in terms of exams since she hands them out before hand but dont expect a balanced view of world history. It can get annoying most of the time.
Really great professor! Teaches history from a non-linear, objective perspective which makes it vey interesting and awesome! Would highly recommend her!
Not exactly sure what to say about this class. For a history class, the material is extremely abstract and philosophical. Very few names and dates so if you don't have a familiarity with history this could be a problem. The essay prompts are easy and the midterm prompt is provided a week before the test. She likes when you participate in class.
I really liked Prof. El Shakry's class. She lectures well and is very fair with grading and makes her expectations of essays and exams clear (she gives you the exam a week beforehand). The material can get very philosophical and abstract, so it can be difficult to really grasp the concepts. She puts a lot of time into grading essays.
I didn't particularly care for her. Like others have mentioned, she's extremely biased in the version of history she presents. Also gets very abstract in her lectures, talks fast and is difficult to understand. She's obviously smart, but she's a terrible lecturer. Essays and exams are fairly easy, but make sure you go to class.
I would only recommend this class to people who already know some Middle East history. She focuses more on theory than history and her lectures are extremely hard to follow. She talks really fast and jumps from subject to subject without cohesion. She does give a great study guide and easy test but it is hard to grasp the subject matter.
Great lecture but she is not clear on what she wants you to get from them. She gives you the a study guide for the midterm a week in advance which HELPS A LOT!!!
Teaches history in a very philosophical way, some students like it I personally didn't. She is very knowledgeable about the material and helpful but is also extremely left leaning and bias. However essays are graded fairly and exams are extremely easy (the study guide is basically the exam) I got a 98 on the midterm and 99 on the final.
Gets extremely conceptual and philosophical. Although it makes sense in a history class, it tends to be a bit excessive, especially since facts about history are never highlighted. At some point, it just doesn't feel like history. Some people like her though, so just be cautious. Her exams are very fair though. Study guides are given beforehand.
I only wish I would have taken her class at the beginning of my UC Davis experience. Leaves room for creativity, powerful lecturer. Amazing professor. Read the Committee!
Omnia is by far one of my favorite professors. She is so inspirational, passionate and caring towards students success. Go to her office hours, she wants to help you do well in the class. Wonderful
This professor is truly inspiring and so amazing. At first I felt intimidated and didn't know what to expect, but by the last class I realized that taking her class was the best decision ever. She truly changes your perspective on the way you view and analyze life. She is very fair and gives study guides for test, which she prepared you well for.
Her class should be on your UC Davis to do list - she's brilliant.
Prof. Shakry teaches history very differently than what I am used to. She wasn't one of those history teachers that just spits out facts and has you memorize crap. She wants you to understand the meaning behind the history and does so very well. Her lectures are really good however there is so much reading that goes into the class so be aware.
Very condescending. Talks incessantly without pacing. Lecture slides unhelpful and distracting. Whiny. Ignores Japan in a world history class. Horrendous appreciation and standards of film and art. Ignores economics in favour of metaphysics. Fails to identify where colonisation has been beneficial, i.e Singapore/Hong Kong. Very biased class.
I took this class as a GE but she made me love it. they way she talks is captivating she is very knowledgeable and passionate. She focuses more on the psychology than the solid material, but it is still very interesting as she is very unbiased and you really learn in this class. Going to class is very important if you don't youll be very lost.
Phenomenal professor, I'm so glad I took her. She's fast-paced, demanding, and expects a lot, but if you like a challenge definitely take her class. Such interesting content and readings. Midterm/final IDs very fair (she gives it all in advance) but the papers are pretty advanced. Go to TAs office hours - it'll save your grade too.
Cons: Her lectures are fast, lofty, and much too philosophical for a lower div world history class. Pros: She's very smart, gives study guides that are essentially the tests (which are based entirely on lectures), the essays are based on a couple of the readings. Took it P/NP, passed with ease, only read the books for the essays and skimmed others
Absolutely brilliant professor and amazing course. Focuses on big picture, metta history rather than spitting facts. NEED TO GO TO LECTURE. One midterm and final which she gives you in advance, and two papers. Don't need textbook but weekly readings should be done. Go to TAs before midterms/papers for extra clarification, since they grade.
Great professor. Her lectures are engaging and very interesting. This class gives you a very interesting way of thinking about history. If you have the option, take this professor.
Her world history lectures were usually extremely interesting, but could get a little convoluted and "meta", and hard to follow at first. Tests were easy based on summaries of simple concepts and short essays. Two 4-5 page essays given, but were fairly easily graded. Overall, gave me a new perspective on world history, highly recommend.
Great teacher! She speaks very quickly so be prepared to write down lots of info. We got a study guide for both the midterm and final that were the tests but with extra material. All the info you'll need for the tests are said in lecture so be sure to understand what's going on. Also definitely go to her office hours before the tests, it really hlp
Omnia is the best professor I had during my undergraduate career at UC Davis. Be prepared for a major intellectual exercise. A lot of reading, writing, thinking, and rethinking. You will be rewarded for your efforts. You'll leave inspired.
I swear the history professors at UC Davis are the best. Omnia has to be the best professor I have ever had during college. She is so brilliant. So caring. So passionate to teaching others about history for the greater good. If you show her that you are trying and you go to office hours you are pretty much guaranteed an A. I looovvveee her
I loved Professor El Shakry's class. Every lecture was mind-blowing. Every concept drew directly from previous concepts. I loved her vision of history, though I know some students felt she was too liberally biased. Her version of history is definitely very critical of accepted institutions and causes students to rethink everything they know.
AMAZING. Second course with Prof, and loved it. Her explanations of history & the material are incredible & thought provoking. Definitely do the readings for the papers. Tests based off lectures (attendance mandatory, nothing posted). Extremely clear grading criteria -gives you overly explanative study guide. Absolutely wonderful course.
EASILY the best professor I have ever had. I originally took HIS 10C with her and was incredibly inspired at the way she taught history, highlighting things I have never conceptualized. She taught me history the way my high school textbooks never did, and she has inspired me to try and make the world a better place.
Ah the legendary El Shakry, a teacher so popular her classes fill within seconds of registration. El Shakry has earned a great deal of respect that students treat her with, her well-rounded knowledge allows her to approach historical subjects with insight that truly changes how her students view history. She is absolutely a great educator.
She talks VERY fast. It's kind of hard to keep up sometimes, but she's such a smart and sophisticated professor that I can't even be bothered by it. It can get a tad boring at times if you don't like history, but she's a great teacher. She truly cares for students, and her study guides are literally the exam!
Absolutely the best professor in UC Davis. Her lectures are very analytical and she gives a lot of insight of history and really goes into depth. Her lectures are insightful and you'll definitely leave inspire. TAKE HER. even if you're not a history major.
Professor El Shakry is definitely one of the more inspired teachers at UC Davis. Her lectures can be hard to follow at first, but it gets better. She gives study guides for midterm and final. Office hours are super helpful especially because the professor is super nice. Two essays on top of the two tests. Material is really interesting too
She talks WAY too quickly, to the point where I had to type notes because it was not physically possibly to keep up otherwise. Make sure you write as much as you can, because the "lecture slides" have basically no content at all, all the material on the tests is things she has mentioned in lecture. Easy A if you keep up and go to class.
Very good lecturer, gets you very interested in what she is talking about. She is super passionate about history and you can see it . Unfortunately she goes VERY fast in lecture, you need to listen closely to everything she says. 2 papers that were graded fairly. Midterm and final were very straight forward, just study the study guide. Good class.
She is WAY overrated. When reading the other reviews I thought I would love this class, but I ended up skipping all her classes after the first midterm because of the way she lectures. Goes wayyy too fast and constantly jumps from topic to topic. It would be so hard to take notes that made any sense!. I definitely caution all to stay away!
One of the worst history classes I have taken so far here at Davis. Professor El Shakry is very knowledgeable but she lectures way to fast. The tests are mostly based on her lectures and she does give a study guide with the possible terms and essay prompts that will appear on the test. I felt that I that I was taking an art history/philosophy class
One of the most intelligent & freaking amazing professors at UCD. Her class&discussions are actual intellectual discussions, not fluff. If you don't like history/art/essays, this class ain't for you lol. She talks extremely fast and it's almost impossible to get notes on everything she says but she spits some mad philosophical fire 10/10 recommend
Wonderful, extremely intelligent professor. She knows what she's talking about and the material is extremely interesting. Go to class and take notes, do the readings, and also go to discussion for a guaranteed A. The discussions are not a pain to go to because the ta's are really cool and good at leading interesting conversation. 10/10
This class taught me how to contextualize varying political forces within the Middle East. She describes the material with a lot of nuance and care, and gives students the tools to understand how to do the same. Also is very approachable and easy to talk to. Essays and exams were generously graded as long as you critically think.
Professor El Shakry is 100% worth the hype. Her lectures are intellectually challenging but her grading is fair, she really wants you to succeed. Definitely go to office hours and go to lecture. The history department at Davis is great, but she teaches history in a completely unique and impactful way.
By far the best class and professor I have had. I carry the concepts and perspective I learned from this class everywhere I go. Holds complex ideas and events with lots of nuance and tenderness. Intimidating during class, but such a sweet person in office hours! TAKE the CLASS, and go to office hours too!
Not to be dramatic but Omnia El Shakry changed my life. If you havent taken her I truly feel sorry for you.
Graduated already. Dbl Maj in His/MESA. Took 5 courses and a seminar with prof Shakry. An incredible lecturer. She's approachable and will gladly help you break down the concepts. You cannot unlearn the concepts you learn in this course and will forever be applying them long after you leave her course. I highly recommend Professor Omnia / Grad17'
Professor El Shakry is absolutely amazing! She's an incredible lecturer and cares so much about her students. I'm normally not one for reading but honestly, I really enjoyed all the readings for this class. The concepts she teaches are literally invaluable. Best professor I've ever had, I seriously can't recommend her enough.
Kind of difficult to rate because the class was somewhat mediocre. As a non-history major, I found her asynchronous lectures extremely difficult to follow as she "lectures" through an audiobook with no slides. This class is intended for audio/visual learners, however, I found it so hard to grasp different concepts without proper lecture slides.
This class was just meh - largely because lectures and discussion were 100% asynchronous. I didn't like the format of the audio lectures - I really would've preferred transcripts or lecture slides, but it might be different for others. We covered really interesting topics, but I felt that the readings and lectures didn't explore them in-depth.
Amazing professor who cares about her students. She wants you to do well and will work with you to get your desired grades! Recommend sitting down with her during office hours because she's overall just a great professor to talk to. The class was pretty manageable overall and we made exam playlists instead of a normal written exam which was fun
Lectures are primarily podcasts that she reads off a paper which is very odd and hard to get used to. Midterm&final are playlists of music/art which is less stressful than a normal exam and kinda fun. 2 essays, like 1800 word count I think. Plus a discussion each week. El Shakry is cool and nice but does not feel warm or approachable.
El Shakry uses a lot of theory in her classes which can be confusing because it breaks from the traditional mode of teaching, but I've found it to be a useful way of understanding history. She can speak a bit fast at times but other than that I found the class to be very rewarding. There is a hefty amount of reading which can be very dense.
One of the greatest professors I've had in my entire academic career; she is an embodiment of the power of the brown intellect. Taking her class was an honor, and if you're willing to learn the information she introduces - you will leave the class with your entire world perspective altered.
A history class based on theory that equips you to think critically and develop your own opinions about how history builds the present. If you don't like this class chances are its probably your inability to take yourself out of your own ideology and critique the world around you.
El Shakry is very knowledgeable in her field. I will say, I did not like the way she spoke in lecture. It sounded scripted, like one of those recorded museum tour audio devices. Assignments were as enjoyable as assignments could be I suppose, and everything was graded fairly. She made herself very available outside of class which is appreciated.
The workload in this class isn't difficult. I never really got to speak to my professor since the class was asynchronous, but the discussion sections are enjoyable.
interesting but a lot for a 4 unit lower div. On average, two 30 min podcasts, another video anywhere from 20 min to 2 hours movie. And textbook reading. got away with just listening to lectures, although they're super hard to listen to— like a speech with no transcript and unnecessarily complex words. Grading difficulty varies by TA.
One of the greatest Professors I have encountered. This course can be difficult at first but as you get used to it it becomes more manageable. I love talking to her in office hours, she is super approachable and she cares a lot and will answer questions with details and ,if needed, examples. Overall, such an amazing experience.
Class was interesting over all. One of the essays was pretty fun and easy to write while the other essay with kinda eh. Topics were interesting but make sure to keep on track with the modules !!
This wasn't the kind of GE I was looking for but it was a good class, but be sure to stay on top of all assignments bc it is async! Prof focused more on overarching themes as opposed to specific events. Assignments were easy w/ no exams. My only issue was the lecture podcast format was difficult without any lecture slides. All in all an easy GE.
Low key hated this class
Spent most of the time talking about social issues rather than history. Also did not like the final paper. I wish she just gave me a prompt, not a creative writing assignment.
I'm a STEM major but I take all the class when Prof. El Shakry was in Davis, and rather than traditional history classes I think what she did was introducing frameworks that to understand colonialism, sexism, racism, and many other things that happening right now independently.
