Assumes we are all lit major. If you hate reading (like I do) you are going to hate her. She has a very special way of seeing life and she seems to think we actually read for pleasure.
Good teacher, explains well and teaches yo how to write. However, getting a B- not to mention an A is extremelly hard.

Likes to put students down and not just students. There was this librarian who was late coming to class to tell us about the library and the professor spent almost rest of class saying mean things about her and hardly gave her anytime to talk. We felt so bad for her.
NEVER take her!! She puts every person down including other professors. She assigns an insane amount of essays and never gives you a good grade. Your work is never good enough and try talking to her, shes sooo evil and her reading assignments are CRAZY boring. Trust me just stay away from her!

Semester is only halfway through and I already fear my final grade. Unless you adapt her writing style, you will always get back your paper filled with red ink. If another professor taught you differently, she will claim that that person is wrong, ALWAYS! Too enthusiast for a class that begins at 8!
Contrary to a review below, she is not smart--has urban ideas but on a very superfician level. She's an old woman who acts like a teenager. She doesn't even teach; she only goes on -all- about her life in every class, her sex fantasies etc, and grades according to her assessment of your personality.
She likes to humiliate students and make them feel dumb. She is a very hard grader. I always got A's before this class...and she is ruining my GPA.
She is a nightmare. She is not very clear when answering questions and she teaches as if every class was a recital of memorized facts. It is a great mistake to put such a teacher in charge of teaching a class that is supposed to instruct and help students with further writing skills. She is a don't!

She is a very fair professor for students who put the time and effort into her course. The students who complain about her simply don't appreciate her intelligence and style. Very often the most difficult professors are the ones who care most about their students.
She may come across as the spawn of satan, but she really does care about your development in English as well as your well-bring. I thought she hated me with a fiery passion and when I simply explained why I had been having difficulty in the class, as well as showing up to class, she understood. But don't play games with her... she's very smart and can see through you. Appreciate her quirks and try to understand her teaching style. :)

She is also an opinionated feminist and likes to make students feel stupid. Really, I think shes has a lot of personal frustrations and likes to vent her anger at her students. I like her. When i had some trouble in school she was very understanding and she let me give in my work late.
She gave me a C but I thought she was fantastic. She really knows her material and doesn't let every fool with an uninformed opinion take over class. If I wanted to hear all my classmates H.S. opinions then I would pay them my money and I would take their classes. She makes me want to be a professor. She really loves language and literature.

Her class is difficult. She assigns alot of reading and journals. Papers are graded harshly and must be done twice. Personally, she offended me; she always confused me with the only other Af Am student in the class and the way she phrases things makes her seem close minded. She also picks favorites. I wouldn't recommend her class, esp. for freshmen
What can I say about Ondree Israel... She is probably the worst professor I've had at Pace. Reading assignments are outragiously long, and she is a VERY harsh paper. She seems to think that your have no other courses or life outside of her class.
Professor Israel is a college level professor - she doesn't just read out of textbook.. Yes, this class is difficult, and you probably won't get an A, but you will leave the class with more knowledge than when you came in, which is the point. I don't recommend this class for freshman, but soph-seniors will definitely benefit from taking her.
The absolute most hideous soul I have ever come across. She isn't aging gracefully and she is soo lost in the space of her own head. SHE IS A TERRIBLE PROFESSOR. You'll spend AT LEAST 20 hrs a week OUTSIDE of class doing work. Once assigned three papers in one week and didnt tell us the topics until that week. plays favorites!! YOU WILL HATE HER.
you need to buy 6 books for this class.there are 4 mandatory trips.only one is during class time and the other 3 are on sundays. you also have to write a review due the class after. she definitely has favorites and is very opinionated.doesnt think you have other classes beside hers.lots of work OUTSIDE of class(reading/papers).likes to shred papers

I worked my ass off all semester. Class trips on sundays, about 10 papers (which i got mainly A's and A-s' on) and attended every single class and ridiculous trip. I read 3 novels and 2 textbooks for this 6 credit class and still got a B. God only knows what some of the other people got. She is by far the worst professor in the universe!
If you plan for a light course load.... DROP HER CLASS!!! She is reminiscent of Cruella De Ville and you will hate yourself if you take her. Too much work to get a B at best. Very critical. Very harsh. Just don't do it, especially if you enjoy writing because she will crush your soul.

Ok, so if you had asked me about Professor Israel halfway through the semester, I would say DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. At first she was very intimidating and scary. However, once you get to know her and she gets to know you, she is a sweet woman. She is an extremely tough grader. Don't take this class unless your willing to work hard for a good grade!
I dedicated a lot of time in this class- in every class there was always either a paper or a reading quiz due. She kept me engaged and interested in her lectures. She is an amazing and helpful professor. Be prepared to work extremely hard, do all your assignments, attend classes, and participate- what you SHOULD be doing in class.
if you wanna read a book every week and get a C on almost all of your papers and a D on the midterm... sure take her. She gave me my first C in College. Terrible. Do NOT NOT NOT take this class. She pretends like you don't have any other classes to take and that you go home and dedicate all of your time to her work.
Ondree Israel is the most vibrant and incredible woman i have ever met. Everyone (below) who has poor comments to say about her are narrow minded. Her hard exterior is to motivate you and build your character as an individual. You must be able to accept critique in life to move forward and learn from your mistakes.

You will become a better writer after her class, but you will also never want to write again. She can be overly critical, and overly opinionated. Be careful, if you have her, and be ready for a heavy workload (reading/papers).
As someone who has never looked forward to an english class, she made me interested to see what was going to be taught. Her stories make class go faster and she is not only extremely helpful but clear. She is not going to hold your hand but will help you become a better writer. Easy A not the class for you but looking for a challenge take her!
Great teacher however it is a tough course. If you are not prepared to work for it then do not take this class. She makes you work for your grade but you gain so much out of doing so. Very reasonable with essay lengths and amount of readings. She makes the class entertaining and makes you understand complicated readings by making them relatable.
She believes that a B is a "perfectly fine" grade. If you work hard, you'll surely get it. The class isn't boring mind you, but the grades are just depressing.... (So Depressing)... for unclear reasons. If you don't mind B's and some Cs, you'll be totally fine.

She grades very harshly and you can barely read her hand writing on the assignments you receive back. She is so overly opinionated its amazing she can get through a class without exploding. It's one hell of a class. Tough grader is an understatement. Only 2 people in my class got an A in a few occasions. Shmoop and Spark Notes are your friend for a class like this. This class does stimulate interest involving romance(tragic mainly). If you're ready for an challenge this class is for you. She sometimes lets you out early.

She scrutinizes your work to a point that you feel stupid. No matter how hard you try you will get your work handed back with so many red marks that it looks like she slit her wrist and poured her blood on the paper. She's the teacher that will have an evil smile while handing you a D on your paper. Had her for a Critical writing class, but all we did in class was read, and she would give us papers left and right without any rubric or teaching us how to write. The readings were very interesting but she focuses too much on it. Grades for everyone were horrible.
This professor is a very hard grader. I don't think anyone got close to an A-. We mostly read in class and discuss some different concepts. She is very opinionated, so be ready to get average grades (Bs and Cs) because no student's writing is ever up to her standards.
I was very intimated by prof for the 1st few weeks but as the weeks go by, you can tell she is caring. She is a tough grader and MAKES you work for it. I did very poorly on my 1st paper (I thought I was gonna get a C for this class) but hard work really pays off. Ask lots of questions, don't forget to do hw(!!!!), always bring the textbooks.
She has been my favorite professor so far. She expects you to work hard and try your hardest to understand the material but is fair and will give you the grades that you earn. Her lectures are very interesting, she is very knowledgeable in literature and she knows how to keep the class interested in what she talks about. Definitely recommend!
Personally, I would not recommend her at all. She is a tough grader and when she gives feedback, it sometimes sounds demeaning. She corrects assignments to the point that it sounds more like her writing than your's. However, I do have some good things to say about her: she is intelligent and picks good literature.
It's hard to tell how she wants papers in the beginning of the semester, but as the semester progressed it became clear. PUT TIME ASIDE FOR YOUR PAPERS she can TELLLLL. If you need help ask to meet with her. She wants to help you. FOLLOW the schedule she gives you and you will survive. take notes during her lectures, they help with her tests.

This is my second time taking Professor Israel. If you do not like her, you do not understand her. She is brilliant. Her classes are very difficult. You have to work for it. She is a tough grader, but she gives great feedback. Lots of papers, but it makes you a stronger writer. She is a genius and I have learned more than just English in her class.
She is an insanely hard grader so unless you're an english/lit major, don't take her. She pushes her students a lot and expects them to grow, but there's only so much growing one can do in a semester class and she doesn't seem to get that.
Worst professor I have had at Pace and was the reason I almost dropped out of college. She is rude and asked students if they ever graduated high school or if they have a learning disability. She also told us that when she grades our papers it looks like she "slit her wrists and used her blood." Awful professor and even worse of a person.

Everyone who is saying that she's awful just didn't try hard enough. After the first assignment you see how much effort you need to put in and if you make it known that you're trying it will pay off. She's tough but if you kiss up a little and make yourself known she'll like you and go easier on you.
She is harsh, direct and demanding but misunderstood. As soon as you understand and accept that it comes from her dedication and care to teaching English, you will appreciate her. She's incredibly knowledgable, clear and overall a wise woman from whom you can learn a lot. Take her class, show up and care about you work and you will be rewarded!

Seems scary but its actually the most caring professor. She wants you to be the best writer possible. After taking her, I am a more advanced writer. She is DEMANDING but if you listen to her long list of DOs and Donts then you will get an A. LOTS of work but she will give you extensions if you need it. Im very thankful to have had her.
The hardest class I have ever taken. Do not take if your major isn't related to english or writing. I consider myself a pretty good writer, and I cried when she gave back our first paper. She makes more corrections on your paper in red pen than you wrote for your essay. Acts like she is the only class you have because she assigns soooo many things.
