Really hard grader. Nice guy, but you have to work hard to get a good grade.
Very difficult teacher, i dropped his class half way through the year
No Comments
Worst teacher in this school, teaches the class as if we were in 3rd grade, teaches you how to use a comma and perios - waste of time and awful grader
Great teacher.. hard grader but he knows what he is talking about.
Very unhelpful and unclear.
He sucked, I failed. He obiviously knows what he is talking about, but I didn't??
I dropped his class after the first 2 days because he was so difficult to understand and not at all helpful!
The Worst Proffesor i have ever had.
Don't expect to get an A~hardest grader I've encountered. He pays way too much attention to class participation while grading than he should. Doesn't talk about the books. If don't do well on papers, you're screwed.
i thought he was a great techer, i really felt like he improved my writing. he deff is a difficult grader, but he is always more than willing to help you...you just have to be prepared to rewrite your papers like a ten times
He actually makes the class interesting. He has to cover the aspects of writing structure b/c it's a part of the curriculum and the book we read isn't up to him. But the writing assignments are interesting and more like creative writing than essays. He tells you exactly what he's looking for and grades you on such. He is a very interesting teacher
Very thought-provoking as a teacher. He is an incredibly intelligent person and fun as a teacher. The only thing I've struggled with is that his class is very loosely structured, which I am not used to, but he clarifies things if you simply go ask him.
He's a really good teacher. zhe lets you know exactly what he is looking for in your essays and his assignments are very creativa and interesting. Hardly ever kept the class the whole time.
Great teacher! Very knowledgeable and helpful if you take the initiative to go out of your way and get help (he will review all your essays and give you tips on how to make them better before they are due) he is a little hard to understand because he is from sierra leone, but he is a very nice man.
Really nice guy, but his grading scale is ridiculous. I had a 95 avg. and he tried to tell me that it wasn't an A. Even after I showed him his syllabus with the grading scale on it, he wouldn't back down. He finally relented once I said I was going to go to the dean to dispute it. Make sure to keep the syllabus just in case this happens again.
he is very tough, He doesn't help with grading. He tells you he would help you if you come to his office to correct your mistake but he is never satsfied with the work you do. for me asking for his help or not is going to yield the same grade eventually. Bottom line, if there is someone else teaching the course don't think of taking it with Hollist
most horrible long borring class taken.powerpoints are 2hours usually, talks non stop about nothing, Grading is unfair he does not stick to his rubrics, grades depend what mood he is in. one paper class av 95 next paper 75. only paper that counts is MIOP (40%) class av 74. grades impossible cant use words is are was it tobe in papers.do not take him
Professor Hollist is the worst mistake for taking a class. He is long, boring and talks about the same thing over and over again. You will not learn anything with this professor, and he will try to analyze every word of your essay to a state of incomprehension. He will give you horrible grades for no reason and will not teach you anything.
If you want an easy A do not take this class! Attendance is mandatory, the man doesnt care if someone died in your family. You will get zero for all the assignments missed on the day you were absent. Talks about useless things like his life. But one good thing I can say is he did teach us alot of grammar rules which is useful.
Very hard to get a decent grade. He expects you to be magnificent at writing his specific way right from the get go. Very opinionated on his essays..if you dont write how he thinks...your grade suffers.
Really hard on grading..But he gives you grading sheets on what exactly he is looking for so its not too hard to get a decent mark.. hes a really good teacher..makes the class interesting..good sense of humour.. hes a bit harsh on attendance..but overall..hes good. i'd take him again!
Very difficult grader. Lazy, cancels class constantly. Doesn't respond to emails. Do not take this teacher!
He might be tough but he really did help my writing improve. That B was probably my happiest grade b/c earning a B in his class is like an A in any other class! He's a great guy and the class was really helpful!
He puts his all into his work, If you get an F you deserve an F. On the other hand, if you make a concious effort and you are not making it, he will go out of his way to see you make it.
Ridiculous on grading and takes away all the true writing skills you have learned. Won't defend any of his critiques. Long lectures that repeat. Absurd critiquing on papers that will never give you higher than a 78 on even when Saunders Center disagrees with his critiques. Don't waste your time putting in so much work when it won't help your grade.
Insane Grading system. It has to be his way and no other. the lectures go on and on about pointless stuff. Attendance is mandatory! Papers focus on the same topic and they are all argumentative! Almost everyone in my class got the grade which was around a 76.. All i have to say is screw Jean Kilbourne! Stay AWAY
once you learn his grading system the class is not hard. After taking his class writing is a breeze on any subject. he tells you exaclty what he wants in your papers, and he gives you the actual paper he uses to grade with. Take if you want to learn how to improve your writing, don't take if your not willing to improve your writing and change
He's a great guy but a horrible teacher. He will make you re-write a poem so that it contains a "beginning, middle and end," and he even re-wrote and rearranged one of my poems without my permission for an in-class critique. Lectures are repetitive and he is not clear about grading - grades depend on his mood and opinion.
i think he's a very good professor. he has interesting discussions and he's very passionate about his work. i also liked that he went over our essays a week before they were due and made suggestions...i followed them and got an A! :)
Talked in circles sometimes, esp. in the earlier part of the semester. Seems to be interested in teaching what is really important in life and generally went beyond the literature. He really got me thinking in a larger context. Grading is fair and your writing will improve. Attendance policy is reasonable. I learned a lot!
Great guy, makes class very enjoyable. He has a great sense of humor and he loves to make jokes. Lots of peer-editing prior to submitting assignments.
Very passionate teacher. Fun, involved, high expectations of students. Very informative. Wonderful class experience.
As a student to loves to write and enjoys english classes, I must say I am very disappointed. At first I felt his class would be interesting but he makes us do all these assignments which isn't a problem, but when it isn't done his way he gives you a horrible score on it. Also his directions are very unclear
Very strict on grading and pretty much forces us to change our individual ways of writing into what he expects from us. I feel like I lost my creativity to write.
Funny, smart, I just love sitting in class and listening to him talk! Really makes you think, just take lots of notes and do the readings and you will get a good grade. You basically give respect and pay attention and do assignments and you get the grade you deserve.
Brilliant Man and I learned a lot from him. He is more difficult and pushes you to develope new ideas and expand the way you think. It's not an easy class and he likes his essays more developed. However, he'll teach you how to break down your writing and analyze it.
Wonderful, passionate teacher. Really cares for his students and for their success not just as writers, but as scholars as well. He treats each student according to their abilities. Lovely speaker, and very involved in his students goals. Even after my semester with him ended he still emails me and checks in on my progress at the university.
As a summer class, it's a lot of work. The class voted on weights of grade. Attendance is 10%, so just show up. There's a presentation on a lit work and quizzes on certain works. Guaranteed 100% on all quizzes if you run through them prior to class. (They're online.)Very approachable and understanding and makes you really think about creation.
Dr. Hollist is one of the greatest professors I've ever had. He is truly passionate about literature and challenges you on a personal level. There is TONS of required reading, since this IS a literature class, so if you don't really enjoy reading, do not take this class because you will fail. He is a tough grader but very understanding and fair. The things I've learned from him and this class, I will remember for the rest of my life. Can't say enough good about this man.
Professor Hollist is a nice guy and is helpful when you speak to him outside of class. He can be a difficult grader, especially when it comes to poetry, but it's nothing necessarily unfair. Attendance is not mandatory but part of your grade is participation. Good class to take if you enjoy writing, but if not, don't ruin it for others who do.
He's awesome.
He is an amazing professor!
Hollist is a friendly guy who loves writing and teaching, but some days he's angry for other reasons and he seems to take it out on the class. He is a tough grader and I thought he could be unfair at some points, but overall he did inspire me to actually write better.
I've never read more in my life than I have this semester. His class is entirely set up as a class discussion. He always sparks interesting conversation. It was always a pleasure to be in class. He will always make time to meet with you out of class. He is always in class, and if he isn't he will assign you work to do anyways.
He's a tough grader. If you're not prepared for that don't take him. Other than that, he is insightful, helpful and makes literature interesting. Class can be boring at times but other than that you really grow to have an appreciation of what he teaches.
Good explanations, AWFUL GRADER! If you take his class, he will tear apart your paper. If you take him, get ready for some tough grading.
Worst professor at UT. I believe this say it all.
He's strict and hard BUT if you put in the right amount of work needed, you can't go wrong in his class... You have to take the time to meet him and let him analyze the work for you. A good writer welcomes criticism
NO NO NO! Long lectures are dull and redundant. Useless exercises. Horrible grader. He will destroy your work, even if you are a strong writer. Gives you a short time notice on an assignment and then takes forever to grade. Assignment for a paper worth 20% of our grade is unclear and honestly too difficult for a FYW class.
SO HARD too much work with not enough time and explanation. When I say a lot of work, I mean A LOT. His stories are pretty cool though...
Dr Hollist is very undecided when he grades, one day you are doing everything right and the other day your paper is terrible. He also messes up the grade book. Overall, he is a nice professor and at times inspiring, but after taking his class I would not recommend him fully. A very hard grader too.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS! Worst professor at UT. He is absolutely rediculous with grading and is unclear about directions about our two major essay assignments worth 50% of our grade. The person below me explains this perfectly. His voice also makes me want to fall asleep.
Hollist is a great professor. If you don't like getting criticism and don't want to improve on your work then why are you in college anyway? Of course he is going to grade difficult and be hard on you, he wants you to succeed. He is absolutely willing to help you if you take the time to see him!
I took Hollist for Contemporary World Literature and I loved it. As long as you are willing to work hard and participate in class, you will learn a lot. We had to read 5 novels throughout the semester, so it is essential to budget your time. Hollist is very intelligent and our class discussions were always compelling. Highly recommended.
Do not take him, I repeat, do not. I wish I read stuff other people say about this guy before I got into his class. Sure, he is a nice guy. But his instructions are absolutely unclear (he thinks that he is..), a hardcore grader, will not let you leave early unless the fire alarm comes on. If you are taking him, I salute to your bravery.
Straight A student here, Hollist assigns work in his intro class as if we were all writing majors with no other classes. At least 3 readings before each class, puts everybody on the spot, each student pretty much teaches 4 classes a semester, incredibly unclear and unreliable grader, he grades a first draft as a 7/10 and then a second at a 3/10.
Nice guy, grades kinda tough but leaves comments on graded papers. Class wasn't hard, lets you do your papers on the topics you chose. Easier class than most other AWR classes at UT.
He grades as if this is a class full of Harvard scholars. The class is supposed to be an easy first year class, but was not treated like one. I struggled to even get a B. He is the worst professor I have ever taken and I would not recommend him to anyone. Expect lots of homework and for your GPA to drop.
Dr. Hollist is one of my favorite professors at UT. He is very understanding, and cares for each student individually. But, he is not an easy grader, but it is meant to push you to do better. If you ask for help, he will give you many suggestions, and good feedback. You also need to go to class in order to pass the course. He does count attendance.
hard grader, hard to understand, always adds more things to do for a paper when you are halfway done or done, so then you have to go back and add all the things he now wants you to do. ALL about the details, details, and more details. All you do is write papers the entire semester. Occasional quizzes and exercises.
Worst teacher I've had at UT, confusing and hard to understand when he talks. All you do all semester is write essays for him which he grades impossibly. Adds random assignments not on the syllabus that are due the same night. Avoid if you can
Dr. Hollist is a very nice man and is genuinely a funny guy. Yet, he is an extremely hard grader and does not make any assignments clear. There are three main papers and two big presentations. Do not take him.
Dr. Hollist is a very nice man and is very funny however, he is a very tough grader and it is hard to do very well on his papers. His instructions for papers and projects are very unclear and ends up adding requirements days before something is due. You have 3 main papers and 2 presentations at the end of the year and there are some pop quizzes.
Will lecture you for the entire duration of the class and is extremely boring. He does not make class interesting and is extremely tough when grading papers. I do not recommend him.
If you plan to take this class, I commend you for being brave. He's a harsh grader and likes to give out assignments that are due the same night of class. Lectures are a roast session, so come prepared and don't look lost (he will especially pick on those type of students). There are 3 major essays and a project, don't mess up on any!
Dr. Hollist is a great guy, he cares about his students and tells you exactly how to get a good grade on his assignments. He also has a good sense of humor. Pay attention to that and you'll be fine. There are a lot of bad reviews on here but they're coming from other UTampa students so that doesn't say much.
Nothing to say other than he is an extremely tough grader. I usually do not struggle with writing however he does not make assignments very clear and will take many points off for minor errors. He's a nice guy but you need to make sure you work for your grade and he clearly points that out.
He is a really, really cool guy. He is very passionate and I enjoy that about him. He gives really good feedback and is very educated. We have at least 3 readings to do before each class. We teach the class 4 times per semester for about 45 minutes per presentation. He is a very hard grader though.
DO NOT TAKE! ]Professor is extremely rude, will embarrass you. His class makes no sense he does not ever explain assignments, just expects you to know what is going on and then will grade your work extremely harshly. Will say one thing in class then the next day will say the complete opposite thing, and it's your fault if you mess that up.
very nice man, but talks extremely slow and can be boring. He tends to act like he knows all, which can be difficult if he looks down upon you, but he truly tries to be nice. Don't take HON classes with him.
DO NOT TAKE! He is a very harsh grader. I never struggled with writing until I took this class. He talks very slow and expects you to understand everything. He WILL embarrass you in front of the class. 10/10 would not take again!
I wouldn't recommend this professor if you care about your grade. Hollist is a great man. A boring professor and a very harsh grader. Attendance is mandatory. Lectures aren't interesting. A lot of busy work. Assignments are mandatory but even if you try you'll never receive an 100 or even close. Receiving an A with Hollist is highly unlikely.
Even though Dr. Hollist doesn't have great reviews, he is a great guy but the class can be difficult. He is a very tough teacher to have and he makes sure that the content that he gives is difficult and will challenge you. With that being said you will learn a lot in his class. He has a great personality and I found him funny but does grade hard.
He's super chill as an honors professor. In class assignments were almost always group, with one presentation at the end. Not hard at all he's super passionate about the honors program.
Prof Hollist is so passionate about AWR and HON, just be ready to work. His intentions are good but his class is difficult. If you follow what he says you should be able to succeed. Plus he doesn't make you buy any books, 3 or 4 papers you have to do, and a couple of activities in class that are difficult, but he does bring out the best in you.
He will literally ramble all class and is very unclear about assignments/essays. His voice will put you to sleep. He will spend all class period talking about an assignment, then give you 5 mins to complete it. He is a very tough grader on everything. You will never receive an A on anything in this class. He will also pick on you in class.
I've racist, sexist teachers, but dealing with Dr. Hollist is WORSE. Unnecessarily difficult, harsh grader, unfair, will ensure you don't get an A on your assignments, even if your work perfectly matches the rubric, doesn't follow his own policies but expects you to. Had to fight for a good grade in his class. If he's on your schedule, switch ASAP.
I am a freshman at UT and Dr. Hollist is one of my favorite teachers. He is always making jokes and provides helpful feedback on not only how to succeed in his class but as well as writing in other courses. He lectures can be long at times but it shows he cares. Finally, extra credit is given if you correct your papers. Overall great guy!
I wouldn't recommend taking any class with Dr. Hollist as a teacher. There's not really anything good to say about him. Clear power dynamic between him & students & he takes advantage of that, will do anything to make sure you can't get an A, no matter how hard you try. Even the toughest Harvard professors would say he's excessive and terrible.
Every UT upperclassman told me to drop his class or switch out when I said I had this teacher for AWR. I didn't listen, and now I wish there was a way I could blacklist teachers from being put on my schedule ever again. Worst teacher ever. He doesn't even teach and grades horribly. He has to have tenure or something... how is he still working here?
I read the previous ratings on this professor and thought I would be able to finish the semester out but ending withdrawing. He is unclear on what he wants and does not let anyone get a 100% on any assignment. DO NOT TAKE. A waste of time and his lectures often are off topic and will make you take a quiz about his lectures if you don't take notes.
When I asked for help he told me it was not his job to tell me what I was doing wrong, but instead my job to figure it out with no explained rubric. Assignments were confusing, I asked another professor and the writing center and still was not on the right track. DO NOT TAKE. He will fail you if you are not perfect, which no one is perfect to him.
I was scared when I saw the ratings for Dr. Hollist before but he turned out to be amazing! He was intimidating at first, saying that you need to "exceed expectations" to get an A but it is not hard to get an A in this class as long as you follow the rubric and instructions very carefully and take his feedback. He genuinely wants you to succeed!
Hes a good guy who knows what hes teaching. there are 3 essays that u work on and a final in class essay. If you dont procrastinate the essays its an easy A. pay attention in class to what he has to say and ur good. also there are easy A's for his lectures.
Good teacher but be aware as time goes on the syllabus will change. He was good at giving feedback and focusing on the fundamentals of writing. He cares about what the students have to say. You have to put in the work, but overall a great person and professor.
class: migration narratives and literature. great professor and will help you in the areas you need. can be a picky grader. Lots of reading and reading checks. He has given one or pop quizzes on readings or things that we learned in class or homework. workload is resonable. Some ssignments aren't super clear on what he wants but its manageable.
I have nothing bad to say about him or his class. I just would like to inform you to not stray outside of his instructions on big assignments as the quality of work is irrelevant if it is not on his tee of expectation. Expressing creativity within his class cost me my 4.0 GPA and I would not want it to do the same for you, but I recommend him 100%.
