Apparently, those who DID'NT come to class/ participate - visited this site instead and wrote some immature stuff. He is fair & approachable, in the feild, applies it, makes you think - and helped people up to the exam. STUDY +SHOW UP +PARTICIPATE =PASS.
Teaches with an enthusiastic attitude and incorporates a hands-on-approach to the material. Will provide specific information so as to help facilitate exam studying, as well as offer additional material out of interest. Go to class,do the reading = pass
Some others have overlooked this proff's: flex-ible accesibility between classes (phone calls/ emails), extra handouts, extra web sites pertaining to chapters, to mention a few items. If he did any more - he'd have to DO our homework too.
It's too bad this man is married. He's the hottest prof alive. Oh and he's also great at teaching. That's not why I went to all his class. I went just to stare at him. Trust me, that's more fun then getting a 'C' from him at the end of the summer term
Are these whiners on drugs? Professor Amitay put NO time limit on the exams! And the average on the midterm changed significantly from 55% the day after the exam--they'd know that if they came to class. Losers!!!
This was my first psyc course ---- I hope my other courses are like this!
He was a good guy and helped me with alot of after school work! TAKE HIS CLASS AGAIN AND AGAIN
excellent
Amazing course! Didn't do as well as I hoped but enjoyed the experience.
Knows how to make an entrance. Not your average proff! dramatic interactive hands on approach. Challenges you to think, promotes class participation and discussion. proves 2nd time with this prof is a charm i hope ill be in his class again!!
He wants every student to succeed and pushes them to be their best. He is a great prof and an exceptional human being. Final exam was pretty reasonable. Dont expect to succeed if you dont keep up. Has tonnes of energy and seems to truly enjoy teaching
Awesome guy who really cares about your education and is always willing to help. Also has a great ass!
IF YOU MISS HIS TEST FOR A LEGITIMATE REASON (ILLNESS OR ANY UN-CONTROLLABLE EVENT) HE WILL NOT GIVE YOU ANY MAKE UP EXAMS BUT WILL MAKE YOU WRITE A 15-20 PAGES LONG RESEARCH PAPER. IF YOU WANT TO FAIL, THEN PLEASE TAKE ALL HIS CLASSES. HIGH STANDARDS
good prof..very interesting lectures, but he's exams are a killer. everything he talks about in class and in text..the exam questions are beyond it and wack..our class avg in summer, was 57%!!
There is no better class to take on a saturday morning than Oren's CPSY621 class. Very High quality teaching with superb lectures, Wonderful stories, Amazingly incredible videos and Amazing 'toys'! GreatEST professor in the history of mankind.
He's my Hero. I want to be like him when I grow up. Not one of those stuck up, dry aliens one usually encounters as professors. Very smart, approachable, and has a big heart. TAKE HIS CLASS AGAIN AND AGAIN
Tough marker on the Essay but other than that all good!
Very sexy and seems great so far. Explains everything very clearly and makes concepts crystal clear. Even more clear than water
Overall he's a very good professor, but it's (Very) hard to get an A in his class. You can hope for B's that also if you are extremely diligent. Not attending his lectures is a guaranteed recipe of failing his class. Has High expectations for term paper t
He makes the midterm test really hard to give everyone in class a "wake up call"! Makes the final a lot better. There is absolutely no need for him to mark hard on the essay because this is RYERSON in case he's forgetting.
THAT was the exam everyone has been terrified of? Yeah, some of the questions are long and take some brainpower to read through, but he prepared us so well for what to expect. No surprises at all!
The Best prof I've had at Ryerson. To anyone who's giving him 1 for easiness, he deserves more than that. No other prof ever gives hints through out the term as to what you're supposed to know specifically for exams. He's awesome!!!!
Excellent prof with the Best teaching skills. When I had him last term, his mid-term exam and final exam were very fair. I didn't do so well on the mid-term because I studied mostly textbook and most of the questions that he gave were from lectures.
He is better than many profs
Great prof! Works very hard to help students with course related questions (i.e - MSN Messenger) Means well but exams are somewhat challenging.
I nominate Oren to become the future president of Ryerson. Or he should be promoted to Dean of the faculty at U of T or York
Great prof, such a nice guy, really awesome course
cool guy
Oren Amitay is the only good prof around that actually cares about the success of his students. If you don't register in his class, all I can say is that you missed a tremendous opportunity to learn and be inspired from a true master.
Great story teller
Amazing! Brings the class alive with relevant (and FUN) stories and well timed group work(which I usually hate). Exams are TOUGH but he prepares you for them in precise detail.
Very helpful prof. EVERY SINGLE thing he talks about in class is on the exam. If you attend class, pay attention, take notes, exams are a give away. If he'd have to be any more helpful, he'd have to write your exam for you and do your assignment too!!!
Hot prof. Proffessor Amitay looks like a ****star. Atleast that's what I thought when I first saw him. All questions on exams are like this "According to your professor.." or "According to your prof and/or the textbook"
COME TO EVERY CLASS!! Why? 1-EVERYTHING from lecture is on exam. 2-He helps out SO much in class, telling us what to focus on from lecture and the book (maybe he's TOO generous?!) 3-Class is WILD!! 4-You'll go to bed dreaming of his sexy voice and
cool guy, take his class, he gives good marks and has no trick questions
his exams can be easy if you show up to class and pay attention. he is the biggest joker and is so helpful and sincere which lets us enjoy learning the material even more. :)
Oren is an awsome teacher. he knows his stuff and is very enthusiastic about it. in order to pass the class....you HAVE TO GO. if you dont you have waisted your money...you will fail. this class is awsome...and the info was/is useful

Great lectures! Take his class. Psychology of Human Sexuality is the best psych course offered at Ryerson.
Professor Amitay is truly a wonderful human being and a wonderful teacher. He knows Human Sexuality inside out. TAKE THIS COURSE!!!!
Goes on tangents a lot. Likes to go off-topic
Lectures are fun, exams not so easy. make sure you attend class!! And make sure he knows who you are and that you always go to class. Participation in class will help too. Good guy actually, he really gets the class involved. But I can't give him 5 for helpfulness.
The best experience I had in a classroom. He does indeed show "nice" videos and he does bring in "nice" toys. Nice to look at and listen to. Chill prof that really creates a great learning environment.
I'm not one to normally go to my morning classes but when he was teaching, you couldn't help but go 'cause the lectures were so fun and interesting.
how could oren not get all 5+s for helpfulness? he responded to msn and emails immediately and was always available to talk about the paper. exams were hard but come on, he prepared us really well for them! and he made lecutres so interesting!!
Oren remembers that he is in it for the love of teaching and the students. He is a truly good person who appreciates that we have lives besides Ryerson. He tells you what you need to know and if you don't attend class then you have no one to blame but yourself. You are the BEST Oren! A wonderful man and professor. WAY TO GO OREN!!
Very sexy prof
Excellent teacher! Excellent and interesting lectures! You have to come to class and you will do very well on the exams! Participation is also helpful! He made Sat. morning classes worth coming too. If you like sex then you will love this class. Last class is the best!
Oren's standards are way too high for this sad excuse of a University that we call Ryerson. He needs to remember that if we were smart, we would be attending U OF T or YORK, not Ryerson. Unrealistically High Expectations on the term paper, exams are sometimes worded ambigously. Lectures were great to attend, mainly because he is easy on the eyes.
He is a good guy. The thing I liked best about him is that even if you do bad on the midterm, unlike many profs, he doesn't give you attitude or make u feel dumb. If you talk to him, he gives you positive hope on how you can improve your mark. He also uses several schemes in calculating your final grades and gives you the best possible. Nice person
AWESOME Prof. Once again Oren proves that you can be a professor and balance that with making sense/being cool. Anyone who needs an intro or abnormal psych, human sexuality or Compsych course - take his - you won't regret it. Your "self narratives" will thank you. Oren you're the best!
One of THE BEST instructors I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. He is absolutely hilarious & made the class enjoyable. Although he is a hoot, he is serious about the course, but does so in an ..unconventional way. He encourages class discussion, not "read-the-dry text" method. His tests are fairly easy if you attend EVERY class & read text
Awesome Prof!
awesome prof :)!.. everyone should take his psych courses...you wouldn't regret it !!!
Very knowledgeable; teaches well; very honest (blunt); may sometimes limit class discussion if there's not enough time in class (which makes sense); very helpful in answering any questions you may have about assignments/exams; I enjoyed this class a lot!
AMAZING PROFESSOR...BEST COURSE I HAVE EVER TAKEN... VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY HELPFUL. SHOWS SOME GREAT CLIPS ON THE LAST DAY OF THE COURSE. NEVER MISS ANY CLASS, TAKE GOOD NOTES IN LECTURES AS HE SPEAKS, DO YOUR READINGS IN A TIMELY MANNER, GET INTO A GOOD GROUP FOR THE ESSAY, GET TO KNOW HIM PERSONALLY, AND YOU WILL GET A GOOD GRADE FOR SURE
FANTASTIC PROF! Go to class and its an easy A. He tells you what to study and helps you out as much as he can. Alot of exam material comes from his lectures so if you attend his class you do very well. Guarenteed u will want to wake up sat morning and attend this class :o)
Absolutely one of the best profs at Ryerson. He knows psychology inside out and makes class very entertaining with real life stories. ALWAYS available to students. He often posts extra material on BB for YIO(your interest only). His tests are tough but he is fair and gives lots of advice ahead on how to prepare. It was an honour to get to know him.
Oren is the best! take his classes you'll learn alot! (and he's hot!)
Not a good teacher at all
Attend his class, take good notes, and rest assure a B. Class is enjoyable, pay attention and you'll learn somethings.
Professor Amitay was outstanding. The text was good but the in class material and lectures were far superior.
Nice professur. Most of the test questions come from his lectures and NOT from the textbook. You have to make good notes in lectures, and read only those sections of the textbook that he tells to read and points out as important. If you have not gone to his lectures, you will do very poorly. He is quiet flexible and accomodating most of the times.
Incredibly reasonable. Thoroughly enjoy the class. I wish he was a nursing instructor!!!!!
Excellent Professor! Helpful, Interesting, understanding, enthusiastic and all those great things!
Prof. Amitay is inspiring in and out of the class. He posts so much material, information, and encouragement on Blackboard. He expects us to work hard and drives us to do our best.
Thanks you for a great class sir. You are an amazing teacher.
He's a greeeeeeeeeeeeeeeat teacher!
Absolutely my favourite professor of all time. I don't have enough good things to say about this course. His stories are entertaining, and lectures encourage discussions. Sex jokes are a plus.
He's funny
He is the most angel professor I have come across till now. He really care for the students, available to chat after class, tells good stories which will help remembering the material, explains very good. Just great in every aspect. Very pleasant and nice when you email him and prompty answers. Puts his students first. Exams are fair also.
Everyone check out that link. He received 2 teaching excellence awards from York AND Ryerson in the same year. This guy is top notch. He knows his stuff and how to convey it to his students. You will like Psychology if you take one of his courses. [http://www.ryerson.ca/news/news/General_Public/20061122_oa.html]
I'm not even in Dr. Amitay's class but he took the time to help me with my project when no other prof even got back to say "no, sorry". And on that day he had 2 others in my program lined up to see him! (and I know others in the program have gotten help from him too!!) 30 min with Dr. Amitay is all you need to see why everyone loves him!
Very confident in what he believes with regard to issues pertaining to abnormal and normal behavior to the point where students are tested on his philosophy. To do very well you must know what he belives. As a Christain I found some of the things said to be offensive, kind of turned me off from the class.

wtf to last rater!? Oren and his website were very helpful, they both provided so much information and fascinating materials. This wasn't for "fun". He was generous, flexible, fascinating, and all about the students. The person below looks like the kind who asked questions on the class website that had been answered 1000 times there and in class!
Lectures are very interesting. Easy to do well if you 1. show up, 2. read the book, 3. pay attention which means don't surf the net on your laptop during class or talk with your friends (u know who u are). highly unusual to get a professor this passionate about their work and this animated, so enjoy!
Yeah, it's a good course & would advise it as a liberal. He's great, although he can be a bit much at times. One thing I didn't like was the standardized exam, which brought my mark down & negated from what prof. amitay was actually teaching. Otherwise, a really great course. He sheds light on a lot of the problems in PSY that most won't talk ab
A very good prof. He tells you during class almost exactly what to expect on the tests/final exam. No tricks, knew what to expect. A very fair marker, his anedotes & jokes made the class alot more interesting as well as enjoyable. Did very well in this course, not hard at all! Does not like too many questions though. Overall, an excellent prof!
My fav. prof! Very honest and experienced and offers lots of funny anecdotes. His tests are difficult if u don't understand the concept well 50% is txbk and 50% is from his lecture. He's on MSN a lot so if u have any questions, that'll be a good time to ask BUT don't ask him for exam/test ans. as he'll get mad. Read the discussion board!!!
2 hours studying for first midterm + 2 hours studying second midterm + 2.5 hours studying exam + 4 hours writing essay= 10.5 hours. This is the total time I spent on this class outside of lectures and ended up with a B. Pay attention to lectures because there's a lot of things he mentions not in text. Very entertaining fellow.
OMG....if you have not taken psychology of human sexuality...well u need to take it, and make sure you get oren...he is the best prof at ryerson and he gets that his course is not the only one we have!!awesome guy and he's always on msn, you can talk to him whenever you want!! lectures are soo easy to understand knows exactly what he is talking bou
Oren is the best professor that i have ever had. He makes learning fun and he makes you understand that material. Not only does he bring new information to class but he is not a proffessor that regurgitates information from the textbook. If you can have Oren as a professor I highly recommend taking his class.
In my entire University career I never thought I'd encounter a prof as approachable, interactive, amazing (cute) down-to earth...the classroom as a "theatre: of surprises, insight, and 3d learning" don't miss a class. Truly a "class act" and down-to-earth . Cares about his students and is willing to help any way he can. genuine.authentic. awesome.
Oren is a really bright psychologist and a great educator. His lectures are interesting and he presents material that goes beyond the text to stimulate our mind. Perhaps one of Oren's most admirable qualities is his open-minded approach and how he accepts individuals.
Great prof. Great guy. Makes you critically think!
The best professor one can hope for in a University. Dunnno how to describe it any better.
wowwww he is gooood...!!!!!
Oren captures your attention, makes ideas stick in your head, and is very engaging. He pushes his liberal views on students. If you are more conservative, you might find his way of speaking, and teaching aids (Ex. videos, pictures), offensive, crude and distasteful.
Amazing prof. Goes Above-and-beyond what you would normally expect from a prof. Gets to know students personally, gives detailed and clear explanations to any question asked, extremely knowledgeable about psych. Even maintains a great blog www.docamitay.com where you can ask him pretty much _any_ question and receive invaluable advice. Overall A+
Very helpful.
I LOVE OREN! He's smart, funny, sincere, helpful, approachable and...very very cute! He's the best prof I ever had. A great person on both a professional and personal level. Going to class was fun. Prior to Oren's class I never use to write on Blackboard but only when I took his class I started writing and being more active. Bigs hugs for Ore
Remarkable prof. Takes his job seriously, makes class a pleasure to go to, and is very very helpful when contacted outside of class time.
re last comment, looks like soooomebody didn't do too well in Oren's class :P. I was in 105 too, and since then I've taken 3 more of Oren's classes. SOME of us can tell the diff between well earned confidence and arrogance ("project" much, last rater?). And you won't find a more helpful prof who goes waaaaay out of their way to help students.
awesome prof! really concerned with students' progress, helps out in every way he can
Dr. Amitay is the best prof i've had within my 3 years at Ryerson thus far. He is a great role model for students and TEACHERS. His passion for teaching shows through his enthusiasm for course content and want for students to do well. If you want to actually learn something, take his course! It is a privilege to listen to him leacture!THANKS Dr. A
Amazing prof! the course itself is pretty hard
IS a really goof professor. You really learn a lot from him and he makes it so interesting you never want to skip his class.
this professor is really intelligent and knows his stuff so well. he is very attractive looks and has a great personality. his voice is so sexy.
WICKED PROF
he is the worst prof I ever seen, he thinks that he is only prof who knows how to teach and what psy about..he criticize all other psy's professions..who cares how he looks or how he similes, don't take his classes he is the worst
Great prof! Very considerate of his students. Gives clear hints about possible exam questions; exams are not hard if you show up to class. Brings own experiences to lectures and is very passionate about the material he teaches. Lectures are interesting and go far beyond what’s in the textbook. Some advice: pay attention to assignment guidelines!
Chose the class because he was teaching it! Great fun, sole complaint is that he rants/justifies himself a little too much. 45 minutes leading up to a topic is just a little too much (we believe you!!!) The final report killed the entire class, literally. 90% of the tests are from lecture so don't skip even if you're dying from the flu!
hes a fantastic teacher, however.. he should think about restructuring the way he marks his essays.. the majority of the mark shouldnt be influenced by the way your lay out your essay.. it should be marked mostly on the actual CONTENT of the essay. But hes a great teacher and he keeps your interest.
worst prof ever.. he doesn't know hot to teach at all.. he goes off topic..he thinks he knows it all but he has no clue.. awful
overrated!
He is great but it is very hard to get A or A+ in his courses. I studied a lot, went to every lecture but got B only. High Expectations on the Assignment. I wouldn't take more than 1 course with him.
I took a few classes with Oren and my marks got better and better. High expectations? Definitely.Hard marker? Yes, but he's fair. He is also available almost ALL the time on line if you need, he tells you exactly what to expect for the tests, and so on... I guess it all depends on what you really want: learn something interesting or just get by?
I've taken 3 classes with Oren...fair bit of overlap for some topics (lots of unconscious), always available 24/7, willing to discuss anything, and will direct you to wherever you need to go. Oh ya, I also got an A or A+ in every class of his...you MUST attend to get good grades
I loved that prof
He is a good prof and he is kind and compassionate. He is very clear in explaining and getting the point across. He has always offered kindly help in the hard times if he knew that you went to his lecture and worked hard. No wonder students love him and he is one of psychology's super star profs not only at ryerson but in york also
He's an okay guy but generally overrated, mainly because of his own constant self-promotion! Generates lots of discussion in class but at the cost of not going through much of textbook material, which students then have to learn themselves. Test questions are tricky & he suppresses assignment grades based on ridiculous criteria to lower the avg.
Amazing beyond words. Lots of interesting storiessss!!!!
Tough grader on the Assignment!! My advice is you become friends with him, talk to him a lot, participate, follow the instructions given carefully, then he won't mark very hard on you.
Psych is so far away from my own field it's not funny.....but Amitay grabbed my interest, he's hilarios, and he's extremely fair.....tells us what to expect on exams. He's also really approachable and helpful with anything I've asked him.....We need more profs like him in my department.....
Great!!
Very tough prof
he knows what he's talking about. he provides you with a different perspective (clearly not from the textbook) and the stuff you learn in class can be applied to everyday life. make sure you go to class or you'll basically fail the exams. still , you have to read the textbook. the course is not a bird course so only take if ur interested in psych.
When I took his course it was something like this: Midterm exam pretty tough, but fair still, just that it had some very long and trickily worded questions that you had to read carefully. Assignment (permitted to do it as a group) marking kind of strict but not unfair. Final exam very very easy and straightforward provided you went to all lectures.
I've heard students say Oren's classes can bring you to tears, and now I know which one. I think HE even had a tear in his eye in his lecture on borderline personality disorder. Powerful all round, but some lectures will drain you emotionally! And the exams will drain you too (but he's VERY fair and helpful if you attend class and read blackboard)
I took Psychology of Human Sexuality (Fall 2007, Sat.am)with Oren, and I really enjoyed the course. He is an excellent professor. I do encourage the reader to take a course with this professor.I never missed his classes and this is due to the fact that the material he brings to his classes are extremily helpful. He is organized and very helpful.
Oren is a good professor. I certainly would not classify him as "great". Reason being is that he incorporates way too many personal stories into his lectures and sometimes the information stated in the textbook does not coincide. However, he is VERY fair with his marking scheme and is also lenient towards the assignments.
Great prof!! He does have strong personal opinions but he doesnt force you on them. He respects your own beliefs and opinions. His marking scheme is strict, but if you follow the instructions and get to know him, he will be fair with you. His midterms are challenging but finals are very easy if you went to class, took notes, did the readings timely
I took Clinical psychology with him and it was a great experience. He is expert in his field and you will want to become like him if take his class. STrongly recommending that you take a course with Prof.Amitay
DR.AMITAY IS THE BEST LOOK PROFESSOR IN RYERSON UNIVERSITY. HE MAKES HIS COURSES CHALLENGING BUT AT THE SAME TIME REALLY CARE FOR THE SUCCESS OF HIS STUDENTS AND DOES EVERYTHING HE CAN TO MAKE HIS COURSE CREATIVE AND INTEREST STIMULATING FOR THE STUDENT. ATENDING ALL LECTURES AND MAKING GOOD NOTES ALONG WITH KEEPUP IS CRUCIAL FOR GETTING GOOD MARKS
Oren for President !!!
OUTSTANDING Instructor. However you will have to work hard for your grades. Even if you do not get A+ or A in his course, his class will generate your interest in Psychology and you will learn something useful and valuable. Will also train you to do better in future PSYCH courses.
Professor is Great!!!
I took Psychology of Gender with him ... He's amazing and very open when it comes to discussing sex ... Loved that and learned MANY things I never knew !
I like this professor's teaching style and took Psych of Human sexuality as my elective. If you are looking for a course where you don't need to attend lectures, just write the exam and breeze by, his classes are not for you. You have to actively attend all the lectures and do lot of studying. He has a huge passion for psychology and teaching
AMAZING
Dr. Amitay is awesome, he makes the material covered applicable to everyday life and really interesting too! He is enthusiastic and strong to his beliefs. Class is interesting and often enjoyable. He is very practical and you can do really well as long as you come to class and study, his hints come from class. Highly Recommended!
i think i have a man crush on Oren..LOL..jokes aside, he's the prof i've ever had. he relates the material to practicle life and makes the stuff interesting. if u wana do good in the class u have to attend the lectures because he exams cover stuff from the lectures aswell as from the book.
His class are very intense and exciting. At times he may go a bit fast because he does have ALOT of great things to say. Wish there was more time in his class.
A professor, who travels to work with a smile on his face, also makes a student like me wanting to travel to school with a smile on mine. Professor Amitay, You Rock!! I will always remember everything everything you said and taught us from class. Keep it up!!
I took his Intro to Psych in second year, and his Sexology class in summer. Great Professor, very helpful and kind to all his students. His lectures are interesting, humourous and entertaining, making the world of psychology come to life. If only all profs were like him, ryerson would be a better place. NOTE: Don't skip his class and the readings!!
Amazing professor. Too bad Ryerson doesn't value such Professors who actually love what they do and want their students to do well...he doesn't teach during the day anymore but if you have the chance, take him at night!
This prof was really good..the best thing about him is his passion for the material he teaches. He's not like most of the other profs who would just assign some reading and lecture what's in the text. He brings lot of real life stories and applications of the material and tells students what exactly will be on exams. Take his Cont ed courses surely
I really enjoyed his class, definitely recommend taking him.
Oren is a realy nice prof. He has immense concern for the success of his students and their future so he works hard in getting to know people personally and making sure they do well. Today is his birthday also, so I wish him a Happy Birthday. Amazing prof. You do have to attend his lecture each one otherwise you will get bad marks surely.
Best teacher I've had so far at Ryerson! He makes learning fun, and you actually learn a lot in his class. I cant believe Ryerson would let go of him. So sad!
Took my 3rd class with him last sem. He's great, learned and really makes you understand things. I still say his long winded rants on off-but-slightly-related topics are unnecessary in lectures b/c he takes SO long to make his point. If you're reading this, sir, e-mail us the rant instead! Stay on topic during the course!
I agree, he does go off topic sometimes but most of the times his stories whether they are off topic or not, are interesting to listen to.
I echo the recent comments. He often goes off track which does not bode well with the audience. I think he should keep this in mind in his future courses!
He is great.
a really great prof. i wouldn't say he goes off topic because he tells these stories to help us understand what's going on. attendance is not "mandatory", but it is extremely important. Gives a lot of hints in class so take good notes, best would be to use a laptop. his class was the only one that ended to early, really enjoyed it.
the one class i looked forward to going... really interesting.. really good lecturer!
Entertaining prof. to watch/listen but has a large EGO. If you're late for his class, he'll remember and hold a lil sarcastic grudge, if you ask him questions. Class is mandatory so don't skip bc he gives you hint. Still tests are highly detailed as he makes his own vs. the textbooks "standards" multiple choice.
Go to class. Make good notes. Join the discussion and you'll do great. Oren knows his material and makes the class fun. The only problem is sometimes the class felt to rushed, the best time to ask questions is in the break. Oren is responsive to emails. Also, on a side note guys the class is 90% female.
He is an excellent lecture...excellent professor. I have taken two courses with this prof and I will take more if it is possible. Don't miss his classes because you will be missing a lot of good information. I find this exams rather difficult --- Oren, if you ever read this, it was a pleasure to take clinical Psychology with you. Peace to you!
Very intelligent and down-to-earth prof with no attitude. Treats all students with respect. Understands the challenges life poses on people unexpectedly. His knowledge in the field of psychology is remarkable.
I came in from St. Catharines every Sat morn for my 9 am dose of sex with my favorite prof! (Never missed a class!) Oren dealt with very controversial topics with the right blend of humor and expertise and sensitivity. He gave fair exams and prepped us well, but they are tough! Yes, you can fail sex ;)
Good prof. He can come across as arrogant, but once you get to know him he is quite down-to-earth and helpful. If you want to do well you MUST go to class as exams are primarily based on lecture material. I really enjoyed his option of a "free association" paper. The material was VERY interesting and he clearly has a great passion for it. Thanks!
This was my third class with Oren. He definitely makes an impression. You know this is a fact when you start your sentences with "my prof. says..." a lot...LOL. He's a really nice man and it doesn't hurt that he's easy on the eyes. You really need to go to class if you want to do well on exams. Take meticulous notes and you'll get a good grade.
Amazin Prof. Very helpful and teaching quality is remarkable. Lectures were full of real life stories and you will look forward to hearing things he says. He will really stimulate your interest in an already interesting subject (Psych of Human Sexuality) DEFINTELY take his course. But be prepared to do all the readings carefully and attend classes!
Who else would make a drinking game out of how many times he mentions something?!? If you're reading this sir, I got the Tina Fey-Sarah Palin reference! I know you're always disappointed when noone gets your references, but I do! He's also an expert on everything! Imight switch my major after this class!!
amazing proff, funny, helpfull, easy to understand, and super interesting! must take another course with him
Really funny. Extremely clear on what's on the exams. Made the course more interesting. A little scattered when it came to lectures, but nothing the average student can't handle. Overall pretty good.
Oren can easily be said to be the BEST professor out there. He actually makes you want to go to his class. Not hard at all. Just go to his lecture and you'll be fine. He also gives you several choice for assignments, which helps you with your grade. Definitely recommend him. Be the master of your own environment! haha
Amazing Professor. Brings great amount of confidence into the classroom. 1) He tells us exactly what materials would be on the exam as he lectures, 2) provides us with several options for assignments, 3) shows us our grades immediately after the test, and 4) very quick at replying and posting reviews and marks. I RECOMMEND HIM! Best Professor!
This is the best prof I had in Ryerson so far... his lectures are VERY interesting. I found myself saying "my psych professor says..." alot after his class. BE prepared to attend each and every class - alot of the questions on exams are from lectures. Its an easy course - if you put in some work/reading..
Honestly the best prof I've ever had. I had him this past summer and found he is one of only a few profs. who really enjoys his job and wants his students to do well. He is VERY clear about what he expects from his students and what he will be testing on. He raises your interest inhe maerial and overall a nice guy. He genually earned my respect.
This prof. was hilarious. He's a hard marker though when it comes to the last assignment. But if you study your notes and go through your text you'll make up for it on the exams.
Many of my friends told me about Prof Oren's classes, and I finally took sex. I had their notes, and a lot fo core material was the same, but each friends notes had a lot of differences, pretty topical, and so were mine. But it's more then the notes, it's the DELIVERY. He's an excellent presenter, and really teaches critical thinking. A++
Just took a summer course with him and i know I will enjoy it. Everything is explained clearly, and overall lecture is just a pleasure in itself. Didn't receive any grade as of yet, however, this is one teacher I wouldn't mind failing, as the class is just amazing.
Read good words this prof. In reality, I feel disappointed with him. Lectures are not organized well. Forgets many things. The only thing that he does not forget how wonderful psychologist he is in comparison to others. No modesty or limits in this at all. Will have to learn everything by myself from the book. Don't recommend this prof.
This prof is too comfortable with himself and therefore his students - whom are mostly strangers to him. He needs to tone down his informality because it can come off as rude. Also needs to stop mocking random students as if he?s 'friends' with them. Anyways, this course is excellent, if you come to class or get notes from someone who comes to clas
He can come off as a bit arrogant and a tad self-obesessed but he by far the best professor I've ever had. His passion for teaching and his knowledge of his subject matter makes attending his class a pleasure. His dry sense of humour is just icing on the cake for me. He's incredibly fair on his marking. Attend all classes and you'll do well!
He can come off as a bit arrogant but he is by far the best prof I've ever had. He is so passionate and engaging that it is a pleasure attending his class. He's sarcastic and has a dry sense of humour and for some people that may be a put off but not for me. He's an increibly fair marker. Attend his lectures and listen and you'll do fine.
I agree with last 2 comments. Dr. Amitay actually discussed this in class, talked about his "persona", but did admit to being cocky. But if you talk to him 1 on 1 or ask for help about class or personal things, you see his REAL, caring character come out. Get past the humor and "persona", and you see his true compassion, knowledge, and expertise.
The best lecturer, fair evaluations, crystal clear explanations. Attend classes for sure.
He does come across as a bit arrogant in class, but if you actually talk to him, he is an extremely down-to-earth person. He is honestly one of the BEST professors I have ever had. You must attend his lectures if you hope to do well, but going to his class was always something I personally looked forward to. Just amazing.
Best Professor I have ever had. I agree with the last 2 comments but his sense of humor and sarcasm were the 2 most appealing things. He is fair and a good teacher. Learn so much about psychology not just the book stuff but other too. I am so happy that I took his class, It was always interesting to attend his lecture. Attend class must*.
Umm, hehehehe, hehehe.
Very interesting, tells funny/relative stories for course and real life, easy, straight forwards exams, tells you whats on them, anything that'll be on the exam he says "make sure you're clear" and then says what'll be on the exam. classes are very interesting and he will change your way of thinking no doubt. Amazing!
He...is AMAZING! If you are thinking about courses with him. GO FOR IT! no doubt. Nothing can go wrong with Oren. He's funny, tells related clinical cases, jokes, and "plz be clear" hints for exams etc. He makes classes fun. I had 9am class with him, and I never fell asleep once. He's too interesting to explain.
Awesome Professor. He should train the others
Amazing proff! Super engaging and fun. Make sure you go to class as his exams rely heavily on class material. 1 negative he's kind of full of himself.
He is awesome. he is one of the most informative and knowledgable professor I've ever had.
A lovely professor in every way. Go to lectures, he will tell you what the half of exam Qs are. Don't need to read ahead. He will give you guidelines as where to read in the text, just read them. Got great grades in every course that I had with him. BTW DON'T DO THE 30% ASSIGNMENT. JUST DO THE 10% AND YOU'LL BE FINE.
The best professor in psychology. He should teach more (in not all) courses
I feel like I'm in a graduate level clinical psychology class, or a training seminar. Prof Amitay blends practice & theory & research so well. And he knows 7 different orientations and shows the strengths & weaknesses of every one he discusses. (and medications too)
One of the best professor I ever had at Ryerson. I think he should teach other instructors. his method of teaching is excellend. very Respectful. Never missed his class. Great sense of humor, helpful, and super engaging. he teaches materials from outsited the textbook which is great.Thank you Dr. Omitay
seriously the BEST prof ever. I wish all other profs at Ryerson were more like him. super funny and knowledgeable. I recommend this prof for sure!
PLEASE BE CLEAR- BEST PSYCH PROF I've ever had hands down. Lectures are incredibly interesting, provides interesting and relevant examples, very knowledgeable. I definitely recommend all classes with Dr. Amitay
Dr. Amitey is a great professor. He is fair, respectful, open-minded and his classes are very interesting. I learned a lot and I got a great mark. What else can you wish for?!...
Most amazing professor EVER! His class is really interesting. He tells you EXACTLY what to study for and what is going to be on the test. He also gives you a lot of options for the assignment. Always gives back marks the next day, never later. TAKE THIS COURSE IF YOU WANT A GOOD MARK!
I loved Oren and the course but it is definately NOT easy. You have to work hard for the grade. I got an A-, but the exams really required a LOT of analysis and interpratation. But he DID tell us what to expect for sure.
HE IS PRETTY INTERESTING. HIS CLASSES WERE NEVER BORING :))))I WOULD LIKE TO TAKE ANOTHER COURSE WITH HIM
Oren covered topics I never really saw covered in other classes. Great diversity of perspectives. Lots of questions from lecture so you have to attend. It was a small class so it was almost like a seminar....very cool!
Best,best,best-everybody must take his courses!!!!
I've taken 2 classes with Dr Amitay. He is engaging, articulate, funny and down to Earth. I learned a lot from him, and the references he gives are more food for thought for when class is done. Attend all classes, as many hints for exams will be given. Be on time. He hates tardiness. Be respectful and speak your mind and you're in for a great class
Dr. Amitay is in the top 1% of instructors in terms of overall effectiveness. He is extremely bright, funny, engaging, knowledgable and compassionate. He has the gift of true psychological prowess and is quite frankly a hero.
Amazing. This was one of the only classes I've ever had where I actually looked forward to going to class. Really smart, clear, and funny. He 'hints' to possible exam questions, so attendance is mandatory. Did not even feel like I was at school, because of how interesting class discussions were. Strongly recommend.
Good professor. Only thing is this guy needs to lay low on his narcissism.
Last rater probably didn't speak with Dr. Amitay directly because I thought he was arrogant too, until I spoke with him. He helped me out a lot about some personal things and also grad school....He even helped me again 2 years! after class was over!! Great prof, better person :)
I love love love love love him! Now i basically compare all my profs to him
Dr. Oren covered so many topics that were relevant to me as a future psychologist, but also as a current student, family member, friend, etc...He brings psychology to life and I'm loving clinical psych with him right now...More of the same great teaching, clinical guidance, exam hints, etc...
He is the best prof I've ever had make sure you take a class with him! Make sure you attend class as he tells you exactly whats on the exam and posts no slides online. As long as you attend class and listen you are guaranteed a great mark!
I took this class bc it sounded fun and kinda easy. but don't be fooled, it's ALOT of work! but the prof gives alot of help and is very funny. also I learned and still remembered more from this course then any of my other classes in my own area! great prof, great class I highly recomend it
Recommended. Knowledgeable, funny, and engaging professor. Class and his lectures go a bit too fast for my liking, so ensure that you can keep up. He tells us what the exam questions are during lecture so I advise you to go to class and study hard for it. The assignment is weighted either 25% or 35%. Loved this course and Oren.
Absolutely the best prof i have ever had!!!! You must go to class, if you dont you will fail. But he tells you whats going to be on the exam, what sections to read in the textbook, and is SO enthusiastic about what he does! Definitely the best prof in Ryerson! TAKE A CLASS WITH HIM!!
awesome prof and person
Took Human Sexuality with him-can't remember course code. You have to go to class or you will be lost. Usually makes a comment every week about a possible exam question. MCQ's are tough, you have to study and know your stuff. Only criticism is his massive ego, he is a great prof but pretty high on himself. Lectures are always amusing.
He makes the class interesting and fun! I would look forward to his classes and I hope to take more classes with him. He will tell you what will be on the exam so there's no surprises. The paper was easy and straight-forward. Best prof I've ever had.
I took this course as an elective. Prof. Amitay really knows what he is teaching, and how to present the info in really fun and interesting way. You'll need to attend lectures, but they are worth it. He is also a fair marker for the essay, and told us in advance about what to study for the tests. Also, caring and great man.
Dr. Amitay is one of THE BEST profs I've ever had. He's inspirational and extremely knowledgeable and knows how to make the lectures fun. Always helpful and quick in his replies. Assignment was straight forward and flexible in terms of weight. You NEED to go to class in order to get a good grade since more than 50% of the exam is from his lectures.
The best university class and professor I have ever had. His lectures were interesting, hilarious, and I learned a lot! I always felt comfortable asking questions during lectures and his answers were always very clear. He tells you what will be covered on the exam, so come to every class and take good notes if you want to do well! I got an A+! :)
Honestly the best class I have ever had! Learned so much from him. Attend lectures, take detailed notes and he gives you hints along the way. It helps that he has a good sense of humour, must take his class!
Dr. Amitay is easily the best educator I've had among all professors and teachers I've had in the past. He's hilarious, encourages participation and leaves you completely absorbed in all his lectures. Also, he goes above and beyond the typical textbook material by teaching real life stories and corruption that occurs. Would recommend him to anyone!
Amazing prof. Never a dull moment in his lectures, super entertaining, and sets students up for success by clearly stating what will be on tests and expected in assignments. Finally a prof I can connect to as another human being and not just some talking head in front of the class! Would highly recommend you take a class with him.
He is SO EASY. And he is interesting, so its easy to pay attention and remember lectures. He is a great proff, really teaches well. Can come across cocky, but he is cool. He is really helpful because he will tell you exactly whats on midterm and final.
AMAZING prof! I took the Saturday morning class, not the most exciting time to be in a classroom but time literally flies by because you are completely immersed in the lecture. He can come across as arrogant but he's a really nice guy and that's just his teaching style.
Dr. Amitay is one of the best professors at Ryerson. Not only does he teach very interesting topics, but he presents them in a way that everyone can understand and relate to. He tells you majority of the exam questions in class (so participation is KEY!) Would love to take another course with him. He is simply amazing!
Dr. Amitay is very intelligent, engaging, and you are never bored in his class. I found him to be supportive on questions related to the assignments and exams. Be sure to attend his class, this is not a class where you can just read your text. He uses a lot of the class materials on the mid- term and exam. Overall, a great professor.
One of the best professors I have ever had. I could listen to this man speak all day! He is so intelligent and teaches in a way where information sticks with you. He's incredibly helpful with answering questions about tests/assignment. Awesome prof!!
Oren gives great lectures which keeps you very invested. His exams and final assignments are SUPER easy. The class is pretty funny and informative. The only thing is that he is very full of himself and loves to hear the sound of his own voice. But hey, the guy knows what he's talking about so it's not a deal breaker.
I'm in my fourth year. Oren Amitay is the best professor in Ryerson. I absolutely adore him.
Dr. Amitay is the best prof I have ever hard in my 4 years at ryerson. He gives the most amazing lectures and is hilarious. 90% of his questions are from lecture. If you attend class this is an easy A. He straight up tells you what is gonna be on the exam and all his tests are multiple choice.
come to class is my only advice. great prof!!
gpa booster!!
Enjoyable lectures and he shares his clinical experience which is interesting and helpful. However, this guy really thinks he is something special. He is so high on himself and his ego has gotten so huge that he can barely get himself into the tiny little lecture hall. Oren, you are not some sort of lecturing god. It's time to scale it back a notch
If you are choosing a course and based on these ratings you want to get into this class. Don't. Lectures are mandatory, but tests were really hard. Some of the questions were on the midterm that we did not study. He gives a feeling that everything will be easy but no. Also he says about a statement that it will be on the exam, dont rely on that
A wonderful professor! One of my favourites. I'd take classes with him any time.
I enjoyed sitting in Oren's lectures. They were engaging and I felt like I was grasping what he was discussing. But if you are a student who enjoys clear rubrics of what to study for then steer clear of this professor. The tests were on things he had said in class with many being extremely specific. Would not take again, great guy but a bad profess
Come to class, and you will most definitely pass! Even if you cannot do the readings, he specifically gives you an outline on what readings you should know, and even if you cannot do those, coming to class will save you! He thinks critically and it is obvious he is here to help us!
Oren is definitely one the best professors I have had at Ryerson. His lectures are so engaging and it is clear that he really wants students to succeed. He gives lots of hints of questions that will be on the exams. Very fair marker. Highly suggest this prof for any course! Ill be taking another one with him in the future!
Dr. Amitay was the best professor I have ever had. He can seem cocky, but hes honestly amazing!!! For PSY621 class average was 69 and 70 for both tests. But if you go to class and take notes, write down everything he says cause he gives all the answers and lotsss of hints. but also if you dont read and make textbook notes you wont get a good grade
Amitay's a narcissist who plays favourites in class. It's easy to do well in the course by pretending that you're in awe of his abilities. He violates ethics by telling stories about patients. Easy grader if you play him right. Avoid him if you want to learn anything about research.
Dr Amitay is an amazing professor, he is inspirational and his lectures are super interesting. Whoever said he is narcissistic, clearly missed the class on narcissism and has no idea what it means :D. He really cares about students and wants everybody to succeed! I highly recommend his classes!!
I learned more about being a GOOD therapist (and researcher) from Dr. Amitay than from any other prof or supervisor at 2 universities, 3 internships & placements, & my current clinical job. I'm now in a position to mentor others and I teach them what I learned in 325 & 335 from Dr. Amitay, who was very generous with his time and knowledge.
I have 2 words: Life changing... one of the best professors at Ryerson. He's so intelligent and caring, I wanted to take another course with him but unfortunately its on a Saturday. Also in case you're wondering, yes you have to put in a lot of effort, but you get so much out of his class... highly recommend
Dr. Amitay is top-notch. Time flies by in his classesthey are always so engaging, unique, and informative. He teaches to employ true critical thinking and integrates his clinical experiences with research and theory. Its obvious that he loves teaching and genuinely cares about his students, and that he is just a genuinely kind person overall.
(Hi Dr Amitay! I know you read these lol) excellent prof, great lecturer. He will give A LOT of guidance in lecture so you absolutely MUST go to class (which is tons of fun anyways!). Teaches a lot about how to be good psychologist/HCP. Would take more courses with this prof if I could. Easy to approach for help! Hope he releases his book soon c:
Out of all my 4 years of undergrad, this has been the best class I've taken. Oren is the living definition of possessing the ability to critically think while being open-minded to new ideas. Going to his lectures are fun and engaging, you will do well just going to his lectures & tells you exactly what you need from the textbook. Take. This. Course
This teacher is friendly and really wants students to succeed in and outside of class. You can get a B by just attending the lecture, but you'll need to read the textbook if you're aiming for an A. The class is very relevant to my field of work, but also to my personal life. The prof. uses a lot of examples and encourages class participation
Dr. Amitay is a rare bird in the crumbling culture of academia. He does not push an agenda but is committed to teaching his students to think critically. He is a heavy hitter in the Psychology of Sexuality community and is respected internationally. He really has a heart for people and I found him to be extremely kind and generous. Life-changing!
I agree 100% with the last commentator. I've had Dr. Amitay for 3 different courses (621, 325, 335) and he promotes critical thinking in all of the classes, and touches topics no one else has the guts or honesty to discuss any more. And he always covers controversial topics from many sides, not just one. He's inspired me to be a better therapist!
Dr. Amitay is a great lecturer, he really knows how to engage an audience at 9AM on a Saturday. His tests are NOT easy however, you should write down as much as you can in class as knowing the context behind what he is saying is important. Also need to read the textbook on your own which was a bummer. Paper was graded fairly. Would take again.
It seemed that Oren covered at least one sensitive and controversial topic each class. He gave so much information about each of these topics and never told us what to think. He taught us HOW to think. And he did this with humor and compassion. He certainly has an "attitude", but underneath that you can see his concern and commitment to students.
His class is without a doubt very entertaining. However, I've got to say that he isn't very organized or clear in what he wants for the assignment. Once you're enrolled in the class, you'll see that his D2L page is all over the place. He's clearly passionate about the subject, but he's kinda cocky... and his lectures are VERY subjective imo
Hes the best professor Ive had yet. He is so genuine, funny and you really do learn!
Such an interesting class, Oren is a great prof if you show up to class and pay attention you'll get an A. You NEED to go to class as the test material is what he says in class. Hard to forget what he says as it's fun and interesting which makes the material so much easier to remember. Looking forward to taking another class with him he's GREAT.
Most amazing professor Ive ever had. Genuinely looked forward to lecture. Very funny. Even with ADD I never got bored or zoned out in his class. Wish he taught more classes!
This was the second course I took with this prof and I absolutely loved it. I would highly recommend taking any course with him you wont regret it. Lectures are very engaging and he is very fair with grading the exams and paper. He gives lots of hints and tells you exactly what to study for exams.
hard working, critical thinking, non-judgmental, with a touch of both humility and narcissism. Easy to get along with, cares about the students, and encourages discussion and challenging ideas. If you're looking to be treated with kid gloves, look elsewhere.
This is my 2nd class w Oren. He was really helpful, and available all the time, and responsive last time. Now he's keeping us in the loop w constant updates (too many??) during this crisis, and he's even more available than before. He's also givig us MANY options for our final exam, to help us manage the craziness of covid19. I feel he really cares
Honestly the greatest course I have ever taken. Oren's class gave me a different perspective when it comes to critical thinking and I am grateful. Attending his classes were actually fun given we learned some very important and interesting things. Would recommend this course to anyone!
My only prob with Dr A is that he makes all my other profs look like s--t! Most of them are ripping us off during covid online learning, like making us watch short &crap videos, and not going over enough materials in class. But Dr A gives LIVE & INTERACTIVE lectures every week, answers questions during breaks, and gives extended lecture every week!
I've never written reviews for any profs before but I had to for Oren because he is truly the best professor I have ever had. Wish he could teach every single psychology course at Ryerson. Listening to him lecture is a pleasure and you truly learn so much from him. Take all the courses you can with him you won't regret it!
This guy is a rare one. Had his class at 9am and his personality alone makes you actually want to wake up and attend his lectures. Always had the most interesting discussions in that class. Solid professor. If you get the chance to take this course, I highly recommend it. I would take it again if I could.
He is not horrible. You will learn some really interesting things but the prof is sometimes unbearable. He juggles multiple topics at once making it really hard to follow. All exam questions are based off his opinions (backed up by science supposedly). There are better courses to take.
I was not a fan at first because I never questioned all my "brainwashing" throughout life. In the 1st class, Oren said so many things that offended me, but I resolved to stick it out & it was the best choice I ever made. No one teaches & inspires critical thinking like Oren does. I literally see the world differently now & am a different person.
I was worried about taking PSY621 online because I didn't think the experience could match what Prof Amitay brought to the in-class lectures I took with him for PSY325. I've heard from many students that he makes online learning as close as possible to live lectures, so now I'm looking forward to another amazing course in a few weeks!
Oren is a strong proponent of critical thinking. He does not believe in supporting opinions for the sole purpose of backing political ideology. He teaches students to investigate the validity all research before believing everything one reads. Oren's lectures are so engaging and he loves interaction, so students are never bored!
I don't share the same feelings about him as many of the raters here do who seem think he is the bees knees. Exams were based mainly on stuff he discussed in class and very little from the textbook and readings because his opinion on things have more merit than any other scientific study it seems. He's not horrible but I'm not a fan. Go2Class
I don't usually rate profs, but I can't let the last person's comments stand unchallenged! Prof Amitay def bases most of his exams on his lectures and he sometimes disagrees with the text, but he always explains why and provides evidence. Just because YOU don't like the evidence, it doesn't mean what he's presenting is wrong. #criticalthinking!
I'm a nursing major and had to take this class as my elective to graduate. Now I'm minoring in psych and it's because of Amitay. Also, he will literally say "Write this down for the exam" so its an A if you show up to class. NOTE: If you get easily offended and/or lack openmindness and critical thinking skills, you won't like him.
I don't know if Prof Amitay did this in actual classroom lectures, but he gives us so much extra time after the lecture is supposed to be over. In all my other classes, I love it when profs finish early, but I want as much time with Prof Amitay as I can get! He is also always availeble outside of class. And he leaves videos of lectures up all term.
I don't know why he has such high reviews. He's so unorganized and his lectures are a mess. He jumps from one topic to another with no structure in any of his lessons. He's very lecture heavy, but also makes you read the text. The class average for the first midterm was a 68.
I'm in 335 and just did the exam. The text part was pretty hard but there wasn't so much to study because Oren was very specific about what we needed to know from the text (and class, which had LOTS of questions). Lectures are fascinating, he goes in different directions because we ask lots of questions and he answers them which I really appreciate
It was a hard exam and i didn't do as well as I hoped, but when I went over the exam with Oren, I saw where I made careless errors. He gives lots of time so there is no excuse to make the mistakes I did. But he gave us a bit of a bump and he just gave us a bit more. You really get the feeling he wants you to do well.
Please do not take any courses with him. He's so disorganized and his exams are difficult. You have to attend every class and read every page of the textbook.
I'm laughing at the last rating! What did they expect?? Of course you have to attend every class! I've taken 4 of Oren's classes and if you actually attend lecture (I haven't had him online) and read the class website, he says what you need to know from the text. There was less text material in all my classes with him then all my other classes.
Hes honestly the worst prof. Tbh Im convinced he writes all the good reviews himself. He thinks hes this amazing prof, but in reality hes so disorganized and is talking about 5-6 topics all at once. He shouldnt be a prof
When I saw his positive reviews I was looking forward to taking this course with Oren, but he is by far the worst prof I've ever had. His lectures are all over the place and hes rude when you ask him a question over email/text. Imma be dropping his course and retaking it with someone more competent
In my career, I've worked with and learned from many psychologists. Dr. Amitay ranks among the top of them. I can see how he's not everyone's cup of tea, but you'd be hardpressed to find someone as effective at both teaching and clinical work (which I'm inferring from his teaching), especially his ability to balance compassion with accountability.
Stay away from him. He's the rudest prof I have ever had. He clearly has favourites in the class. If you're not his favourite it doesn't matter who good you are. He goes on about how good and famous he is and gets invited into different shows and . Academically, he is NOT. Please stay away. Wouldn't be surprised if he wrote all of the good reviews.
I think the best description is that he is who he says he is, and he teaches what he says he's going to teach. You get a critical thinker who teaches us to deal with controversial topics with a critical mind. Exams are tough, but he tells you exactly what to expect and gives lots of time to write them. The paper is pretty much more of the same.
I can't say enough good things about Oren. He's always available outside of class and I can see why he's such a great therapist when it comes to dealing with personal matters. He seemed intimidating in class at first but speaking to him outside of class gave me a whole different perspective, and after that I saw him in a whole different light.
Dr. A is a compelling speaker though I often feel I am being led by his personal beliefs. In some ways I do not find this to be problematic, especially within psychology where there are no always right answers. His cockiness doesn't bother me personally, but it makes me wonder about his adaptability and propensity to admit his mistakes.
I've never had a prof like him, hes so interesting to listen to and the content was so interesting. He's got a different perspective then other profs and backs all his claims. Please take the class with an open mind. Only thing that sucked was how his lectures were everywhere, but he makes it clear whats on the exam. Essay was also easy.
Just finished the course with Oren and I can truly say it was the best course I've ever taken. It really helps to be actively engaged and Oren makes you really want to get involved. His clinical experience is invaluable and I really appreciate his "unique" teaching style.
So if your looking for a chill easy elective class.. this is not it. First of all you have to attend all lectures because he makes his own rules and uses his own theories on his exams, therefore if you miss one class what he puts on the exam could be totally different from what official definitions or textbooks say???
Dr. Amitay is a great teacher, you just have to step outside your comfort zone with how you are used to being taught. . He was real; which is something I appreciate after many courses with those who lack passion for what they are teaching. Yes, attended lecture, listen to what he says and understand what he wants for the paper and you can do well.
Dr. Amitay really teaches critical thinking EXPERIENTIALLY. Each week, I found myself challenging my beliefs & assumptions. Material is often controversial & "triggering" (he hates that word), but he deals with everything sensitively & respectfully (and uses humor to make it easier to digest.) You won't get this content or perspective anywhere else
Finishing up the semester, and I've never had a prof who is as honest and genuine as Oren, who is inspiring me to be as caring to my future clients as he is. I've had many psychologist profs, but Oren's class was the first time I got the sense that I really learned about clinical psychology and how to be a great therapist. Highly recommended.
On one hand, I can see why some students wouldn't like Oren's teaching style or personality, but on the other hand, I can't understand how anyone would find any problem with anything he says in class. To be honest, I didn't believe some of the more controversial claims Oren made, but I looked everything up and confirmed that it was all true.
He is the worst professor ever. I was doing the final exam and the lockdown browser just closed by itself. When I asked him to open the test again he was so rude and told me he can just start it one more time and he gave me a third of the normal time. I saw all of his lectures(3 hours per session)lectures for his exams but couldn't get a good grade
I love Dr Amitay, he covered so many controversial topics and turned me into a critical thinker! I never missed a lecture and was always engrossed because of the content but also because of his delivery. He was also very compassionate and understanding about my personal situation. I wish I could take more courses with Dr Amitay :(
Doc Amitay has an unorthodox approach, so for anyone expecting a cookie-cutter approach to education, which, you can frankly teach yourself with a library card, he might not be for you. Do you have to work in this course? Yes. But, you are BETTER for it. Simple formula: (1) Watch/attend lectures (B) Study the text (C) Write a reflection paper.
The lectures were super interesting especially given that he's able to pull from his own clinical experience. Papers were graded generously, and if you watch all the lectures you should be able to do well on the exams. He's such a good lecturer that even after a long day I was excited to attend the class, even if it sometimes went past 3 hours lol
He just talks and is all over the place. His lectures are messy and he jumps from point to point. His midterm was difficult and was proctored. He likes to talk about himself a lot and why he has gotten "cancelled". He likes to give chapters and chapters of the textbook and random files that you need to know, while always going over class time.
Midterm was based on lecture content and some readings. He provided us with recordings and would preface exam content by stating that it will be on the exam. He also outlined which specific pages and sections to read. We were given options on the final term project and he said he would adjust weighings for each student based on performance.
Midterm was spoonfed. Lecture recordings are provided and he states what will be on the exam. He also specified what pages and sections to read. We had options for the final term paper and he said he would adjust weighings for every student based on performance. Opinions aside, a course doesn't get more straightforward than this.
Prof. Amitay is the best I have ever encountered in many years of undergrad studies. He is very honest and fair with the marks. His lectures made me reflect on my personal life as well. I could say that this course changed my life. I wish I could take more courses with him but they are very limited.
Awful teacher. Claims to make us into "Critical Thinkers", all while feeding us heavily biased and transphobic opinions. Every time he shares an anti-trans view, he defends himself with "I can't be transphobic, I have trans clients". Being non-binary, I felt very unsafe to speak up in his class. If you have a complaint, send it to the school.
Good experience. He really loves teaching and he asks us to guess the disorder he's describing in class and it's a fun and enriching way to learn and I end up retaining way more compared to classes where profs just teach out of a textbook/self-directed module and he shares relevant and insightful anecdotes about his clients.
B- prob, good reviews r like a weird fan cult. usually an A student. and prev psyc major. proctored exams, 1 assignment. exams are difficult, you need to listen to every word he speaks... he likes to choose certain topics-- like focuses on people who were deemed controversial like him... etc. it's odd. imo makes the course unnecessarily difficult.
Doc Amitay seems knowledgable, but his lectures just consist of him stating his opinions on everything. There are 2 exams, with the questions largely being "what the instructor did/didn't say about xyz..." with 6 mutliple choice answers for each question. Extremely unreasonable to expect us to remember every single thing he says.. a waste of money!
I'm guessing the previous reviewer never attended Dr. Amitay's lectures. This was my 2nd class with him, he always shows & explains where his opinions come from. His exam Qs usually have 4 or 5 answers. I remember "Not" Qs having only 4 or 5 choices. Lots to remember for exams, but he's very clear on what we need to know. Essay grade seemed fair.
Very easygoing professor. Midterm and finals questions are mostly things he pointed out to take down in lectures. Marks the essay very easy. In addition points out what you need to know from readings and work. You have to be very open minded as he says a bit of controversial things but it makes his lectures interesting. Also bell-curved - love him.
I can't believe that Dr Amitay was yanked from the class half way through the term! He was the best prof I've ever had, and I really appreciated that he actually teaches critical thinking and exposed us to more new information I have ever received in all my classes. I was looking forward to what else he was going to cover.
I don't usually write reviews, but I have to warn others about Dr. Oren's CPSY621 class. In 3 years at TMU, I've never experienced such disorganization. He lacks slides or structure, often jumping topics off the top of his head. He doesn't know how to teach he should stick to his psych career. Exams are proctored, yet guidance is minimal. AVOID!
Amitay is by far my favourite professor and I've taken a lot of courses. The first class felt like a Pilot episode and he just knows how to give a lecture. I've never had a class that felt this personal and interactive, even though it was remote. He makes you *want* to participate in the discussion and learn intrinsically.
I was apprehensive at first if I should continue but glad I did. He spirals through a lot of content so it's often very difficult to keep track of concepts, but his lectures are highly engaging. Content isn't what I expected but more of a critical thinking course, which I find to be incredibly valuable now.
I was concerned if I should drop the course based on first class. Glad I didn't. He's awesome and teaches critical thinking skills unlike any other class. Class content wasn't quite what I expected but equally important. He's very engaging in lectures and helps you to understand content outside of traditional textbook/lecture format.
