Smart lady, but too harsh and sarcastic.

this cousre should be an easy course and the purpose is to introduce to music not to attend the high level concerts for no good reason students dont even know what music is right now and she expects too much!!!
Her exams are a bi*ch. If u take her class, make sure u dont have any other hard classes because u have to give most of ur time on this stupid class. THis prof should cool down a little. She shouldn't treat her students as professional musicials.
She knows her stuff and you can ask all the questions you want without any complaints from her. Her exams are fair, if you listen in class and read the assignments you will do very well in her class.
for education majors.. she's good! u need mus152... and she's really good for this class. really sweet.

By far, one of the best teachers I had, she knows her stuff and teaches very well. But she demands too much - you must go to 3 concerts, she gives 2 exams, pop quizes and lots of HW. But once you pay attention in class, listen to the musical assignments and read the text - you must pass the class.
piece of cake if you have a head
I took this class a few years ago now but found it WONDERFUL. Deff. a challenge and a lot is expected of you but nothing unreasonable.Makes you stretch and gives you enough credit to assume you can DO IT, even if it is hard. Ask a lot of questions and study the material and you should have no problems. To the rest dissing this prof. I would suggest learning how to formulate a cohesive crit. before laying into this (or any) prof. you make ccny look bad. The rest of the 'proletariat' are weeping. seriously.
Professor Krasner is one grumpy person. She always comes late to class at least 15 minutes all grouchy and frustrated. She bashes the class for another wasted 5 minutes and in anger she takes the attendance. This lady got some issues. If you are a professional about music and stuff you are doing, do yourself a favor, take it with the pros instead.

She's very laid back. She tends to be late and let the class out a bit late as well. Still, she knows what she's talking about and is very clear. Grading is easier than average and we only had two 2-3 page papers. No other homework.
this was a great class, i learned alot, and i enjoyed going to her class. she required a museum visit and some easy 1/2 pg reports. we used the txtbk alot and listened to tons of music. not alot of homework. take lots of notes, pay attention and you will do great.
One of CCNY's very best professors. She is very funny, extremely knowledgeable, and clearly loves teaching. Attendance isn't a big deal, but class participation is. There is no textbook work and homework assignments are usually fun and original. She can be critical at times, but she is very fair and her great sense of humor makes it OK.
The first day, our class was huge, there weren't even enough seats for everyone, and she talked about the class like it would be the hardest thing ever. A week later, after about a dozen people dropped, she revealed her true self and the class became very cool. The topic (writing about music) sucked, but she's great (though a bit quirky). Not hard.
I heard that she was a good music professor and you have to do her work. She doesn't accept klater papers and she always ask the people questions especially the people who don't telk. Her class was o.k but there were 2 music reports and she knos everything. she is good if you are willing to learn.
she is hard u have to work hard for B-
Heavy workload, nice person very helpful
very smart professor. gets critical if class doesn't follow readings. Her tests are hard...fill in the blanks. have to know terms very well. You will have to write two concert reports for her class.
the class is ok. she will try to make jokes to see if you're playing attention. not many assignments, just readings and the 2 concert reports. take good notes for the exams, which are fill in the blank.
Music Appreciation in exactly what it is - anatomy & history of music. It does not matter who the teacher is but GRAB her...She is funny, not clinical & not boring. Do your work & you will be fine. Most importantly, she gives life examples (funny)to help you comprehend the subject matter. Believe me...there are BORING teachers. Take this one.

when i emailed her about my final grade she said I didnt understand college level work and put no effort, meanwhile i tried really hard for the class. she is actually a horrible person. she has no respect for her students and doesnt understand the point of learning music. she takes it way too seriously and made me dread her class.
Sheis an easy professor. but, if you are Muslim, DO NOT take her she is prejeduce, she gives low grades to Muslim students. other than that you'll be fine!
Just don't. okay? DONT TAKE HER.
I just read a review her that said she doesn't like muslims. That's BULL. She always encourages students to come see her during office hours if they are having trouble. Her class is tough, but thats because MUSIC IS TOUGH. She's funny and uses the best analogies to explain music. I definitely recommend her for MUS 131.
great prof she was strict yet liberal and very engaging i still use some of the stuff I learned with her in my professional life...always have your basics solid!
Honestly not a good professor all. Wastes too much class time yelling at people to pay attention to her boring lectures. "Jokes" made to engage the class are boring and repetitive. Class material isn't clearly explained and is more worried about maintaining her image than assuring students understand her.
Krasner is one grumpy person She always comes late to class at least 15 minutes all grouchy, frustrated,in bad mood and very sarcastic. She picks on students and compassion is something that she never practices. She got some serious issues. If you are serious about music, do yourself a favor, take it with the pros instead.
Dr Krasner is a horrible, I hated her class, sarcasm and inflated ego. This woman has no compassion for her students, she constantly pick on her students. Not a good human being. Period!
For those of you who aren't music majors (which most students weren't in my case), this class can get a little boring. However, Professor Krasner does her best to keep the class awake by making jokes at some point during every class. READ THE TEXTBOOK. Exams consist of fill-in-the-blank, listening, and maybe an essay question. Overall, she's good.
Professor Krasner is the quintessential old fashioned music professor. She doesn't play when it comes to grading, but she gives you more than enough opportunity to do well. I found her very interesting and she is very approachable if you're interested in what she has to teachsay. I enjoyed her class and would take her again.
Tends to be rude. Knows her stuff well. Hard to get good grade if you mess up even once, because everything weights alot. Wouldnt recommend it unless you're a music major
MUS101 is obviously super easy for a music major but if you're not one then her class won't be the easy A you're looking for. She's a bit obnoxious, quirky, and her lectures seem never-ending. In her midterm and final there is a listening portion where you name the composer, style, era, etc as well as terms. There are also 2 concert reports.
Not recommend for non music major. The class is not that easy as I expert. You may not get an A even you put effort in it. She is very knowledgeable, If you are music major, you will learn a lot from her. DON'T take her if you just fulfilling the requirement. BTW, Her grading is kind messy, midterm counts 20%, but there is no any midterm.
Tests are fill-in-the-blank, brief listening portion, and one short answer. The tests are hard if you drifted off during class and didn't touch the textbook. Take notes on the trivia she says during class, it'll pop up on pop-quizzes and tests. Study textbook vocab, her trivia, and her posted music on macaulay: if you participate and do this, B - A
Dr. Krasner may seem very intimidating at first, but over the course you begin to realize that she really cares about her students. No mandatory textbook for the class, but she gives us drill sheets and plenty of resources. She makes the most amazing analogies, she is able to relate music to anything to help you understand more clearly.
Krasner is passionate about music and theatrical arts, which made her class engaging. She barley grades her papers so be prepared to not know your grade during the semester. Krasner cares about class participation. It's not important to know everything in the chapters she assigns as much as it is to say something intelligible. (Slightly elitist.)
Easy A class. She really loves class discussion. Cares about students and always tries to accommodate your schedule. Krasner took us on a plethora of artistic outings that were very fun and interesting. She's genuinely interested in having you love NYC as much as she does- and having creative philosophical discussions in class. Very light workload.
We didn't use txtbook, forced us to buy it, not really recommend for ME students becuz she gives you lots of work &places to visit in NYC which for ME students is a big deal since we are low on time &money. Grades two concert reports-hardcore, gives extra assignments that usually go against you. Pop quizzes and tests! Not an easy A. Dont recommend
Don't take her,I walked away from the class hating this professor and music in general, &Im a type of guy who loves listening to music. You wont gain anything from this class &it will give you a lot of stress as to where she will make you go to many concerts and waste ur time attending the MET's music gallery where she expects 5, 10 page essays.
I love her. She explains everything very patiently and slowly, even though she has done this a million times. If you don't understand something, don't hesitate to ask questions! She wants people to participate. If you are shy, you can always ask her your questions after class and she will explain it to you in-depth. She is insightful & amazing.
Great lectures, I really enjoyed her class. That being said, this class is tough and if you want to pass, you better be ready to work.
Do NOT take this professor. She took her introduction to music 101 which is a beginner class WAYYYYY to seriously and she will grade your music paper like hitler with a stick up his ass. Once again for those in the back who couldn't hear me the first time, JUST DON'T.
She is the one of the hardest professors out there. If you want to be a Music major, go for it but if you aren't don't go for it.
She is a really great professor. You have 2 concert reports that you have to do and quizzes. I think participation helps show that you are interested and you are learning. She may come off as hard or mean but she just wants the best for her students. Definitely recommend!
2019 - MUS 34100 DO NOT TAKE CLASS WITH THIS PROFESSOR Reasons: -No structure (No syllabus providing what material will be discussed) -No respect towards her students (prepare to be belittled every chance she gets) -Your input doesn't matter (make sure to not comment unless spoken to) -No real passion for teaching If required take with other
It made me uncomfortable that I wasn't made aware of how I was doing in class. Could be more organized. I already had some knowledge of music which is why I think I got an A. She is a very tough grader on the concert reports though. Study! Her tests are confusing. However she has an obvious passion for music and I found her lectures interesting.
her class was so bad i dropped it in the MIDDLE OF THE SEMESTER!! see thats how bad it was. I thought music 101 was going to be easy and light work but she made it complicated for no reason. Its an introductory class but she treated it like much more. Basically don't take her unless u wanna suffer
Music 101 but took it too seriously. Her grading was overly strict. My GPA went down almost 3 whole points after this course and I still have not recovered after 2 years.
I recommend for students not to take this professor at all. The other day she sent out a email saying that there's not going to be any class on zoom google meets hangouts, blackboard ultra collaborate not Tuesday nor Thursday not ever this semester but she is still giving work without her there and shes expecting us to know the material on our own.
I found it HILARIOUS that she had assigned 2 papers before my writing class could assign one. She expects so much but doesnt provide enough. Her instructions are always unclear and she doesnt know how to help her students most of the time: she gives us a platform she doesn't know how to use and when we have problems we don't have anyone to go to.
If you don't want to spend hours researching old musicians, don't take the class.
A lot of work is given and she doesn't even grade a lot of the work. Instructions are very unclear for every assignment. She doesn't hold classes so you're basically teaching yourself there is no need for her.
I expected some readings but not too many. Unfortunately it was mostly reading material, professor made the class asynchronic, meaning no meetings. I would have been ok with it if the prof made lecture videos, after all it is a lecture class. No mercy grading work, quizzes had tiny details no one would know, quizzes were there to kill your grade.
The class was asynchronic, meaning no meeting times, expect some reading, unfortunately all I did was read. There wasn't even lecture videos. No mercy when it comes to grading work, quizzes full of tiny details, most likely to kill your grade. Still gave work after classes were over. 50% music related history, 30% music(basics), 20% other.
Intro to music? I think not. Gives out so much work that she can barely keep up, by finals week youll only have 3-4 assignments graded. Gives no clarification, just work and more work. Assignments are unclear. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PROFESSOR. Harsh grader, youll spend hours on assignments to not even know where you stand in the class. STAY AWAY!!!
i am a great student in all my classes, but this is by far the hardest class I've taken and I hate that it was mandatory. she is a tough grader and I feel like there is no way to impress her. the test are hard and the listening pieces are hard to identify. this was way too hard for an intro to music class, don't take her. prolly will ruin my gpa
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WHATSOEVER! SHE IS THE WORST PROFESSOR YOU CAN EVER HAVE. SHE DOES NOT GRADE ON TIME. SHE IS NOT CLEAR ON HER MATERIALS AND GIVES MORE WORK THAN ANYONE CAN HANDLE. THIS CLASS IS TERRIBLE.
Shes a tough grader who takes a required class for credit like a Music 301 class. Her papers instructions are completely unclear and she wont clarify her meaning through email. Her tests have questions that arent related to the course either. Additionally, she grades slowly and HASNT finished grading Fall 2020 yet.
please avoid this professor by all means!! its sad that there aren't any professors teaching music 101 besides her, so for most they dont have a choice. initially, i ignored the bad reviews and thought its a 101 class how bad could it be.. this is worse than a 300 level class!! too much work and never clear on assignments/tests. AVOID AVOID AVOID
She takes off points unnecessarily for having technological difficulties. She also makes her exams hard, (i.e she puts sound files where you have to know the difference between the French and English horn). She also makes multiple choice questions more difficult than necessary, having multiple correct choices (and penalizing for missing one).
I can see why people hate this class, but I think that COVID-19 most likely made this class easier since the exams are open book. That being said, she doesn't provide feedback, the quizzes are difficult and longer than in most classes, and she doesn't lecture (I wish she did). Use your free time wisely and STUDY HARD. It's the only way to get an A!
A complete waste of time for anyone that doesn't want to be a music major. If you need liberal art credit, just take the CLEP exam. Her tests are weirdly specific and unfair to people who don't have a music background. Worst thing is that she feels like she's doing students a favor when she makes basic COVID accommodations. Took it and I regret it
Her exams are extremely unfair and she grades the reports way too harshly. Save your GPA and avoid her.
Please save your time, GPA, and your mental state, and do not take her.
Its crazy how this is a beginner 101 class and she made it so unnecessarily difficult. She is extremely unclear with the grading and will not elaborate when asked. I am a straight A' student in all my science and math classes but somehow am barely passing a music 101 class.
She will make you hate this topic and never want to do anything related to Music ever again. Somehow after all my stem classes, this music 101 class was still the hardest class.
I don't have the right words to warn you enough to avoid her. The reviews here are accurate -- listen to them.
I am a music major with straight As yet this is the hardest class I have ever taken. Not enough explanations, bizarre quiz questions having to do with her personal life (i.e. "what language am I learning right now?") and an absolutely awful lack of clear feedback. Also doesn't understand that group projects don't work the same during the COVID era.
I am doing a double major in 2 difficult subjects and decided to take this class as a fun liberal arts requirement. Somehow this was the hardest class I took this semester. I regret taking her so much. Her expectations were way too high and I think that may have been her downfall.
This is probably one of the worst classes I have taken here. Words cant describe how horrible this class made me feel. The professor offers no real guidance and has unrealistic expectations to what a student should be able to do. Quizzes often include listening sections that unless you are knowledgeable in music wouldn't know. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS!
I'm currently failing calculus and this class still makes me more sad than that.
THE WORST! She gives a 5 page essay, a listening exam, and a 50 question exam during finals week. Her quizzes are the hardest quizzes ever. Its an intro to music class, but she gives exams like she expects you to be Beethoven. I took a capstone class this semester, and I have a lower grade in this class. Do not take it, i am being serious!
By far the most awful elective course I've ever taken. this was an asynchronous class so the professor didn't have to put in any effort over the semester, yet she piled on a ridiculous amount of work for an irrelevant, useless class. she acts like this is a PhD course with the amount of assignments and quizzes and essays. do not enroll. its trash.
I really don't like talking down on a professor but she is an exception. By far the strictest professor I took and I am a science major so that says a lot. She literally made me depressed 2 classes in and I really hope you read this and think twice before taking her. She genuinely made me question if I even wanted a college education. Avoid her.
I don't think she has a passion for teaching this course anymore. Just don't take her if you have a choice.
this class made me depressed.
I was taking 3 other classes during the semester, including a 4 credit course, and this elective course was the most hardest and stressful one. it was completely asynchronous which made the work 10x more challenging than it already was. i had to break every bone in my body to earn this B+ and that is with extra credit.
I'll be honest, I read these comments but still gave her the benefit of doubt thinking how bad could she possibly be. From student to student- she is by far the WORST professor I took. I had such an incredibly horrible experience with her and she made me so unbelievably sad throughout the entire course. She's a narcissist and doesn't care about you
This class was way harder than it should've been.
She would give us the next assignment before she could grade our previous one and we were left with no feedback. Then she would get mad at us for not 'correcting' our newer reports based on her non-existing feedback.
this class and professor made me very sad.
She thinks that all the students in the class knows classical music like its in the back of their head. I thought I was gonna be listening to WLR but instead she got me listening to Mozart - Piano Sonata No. 16 in C Major then expects us to gain information out of that.
I don't know if it was because it was asynchronous, but this class? Horrendous. I thought I'd be learning about music and the structure of it, instruments, and how to compose, but I was DEAD. WRONG. And why am I getting papers for a MUSIC CLASS? And she's almost never available for office hours. Never taking this class EVER again.
This class was harder than my calculus and computer science courses. She completely destroyed my GPA and I will forever regret taking this class.
Do not take this class if it is not required for your major.
I took this class Fall 21' and it was too much. The amount of readings she made us read and then the test would be even more difficult. Do not recommend, plus there is no way to cheat on her exams. Tried to look for answer sheet but you would have to look up answers one by one on google, sometimes the answers you google are vague.
DO NOT TAKE!If you read all these negative reviews and decide "how bad can it be?" & give her a chance, you will forever regret it. Expects you to know everything she does & shes never available. When you reach out she basically tells u to study more. Grades so harsh and super late. This is the worst class and professor I have ever had! Depressing!
she made an intro to music class so unnecessarily difficult. it brought down my gpa. f her.
I understand having difficult courses, but I found this course a bit excessive for an introductory class. There are two textbooks provided and links beyond links to refer to when it comes to weekly listening and general quizzes. I am not well versed in musical terminology, but managed to work through it. Not sure I'd recommend to a friend.
This professor has unreal expectations for a beginner music course. In order to do even do slightly well in this class you have to be extremely knowledgeable about everything. This class is harder than my stem courses, which is not something that should be happening.
You have to write 2 music reports where you have to attend 2 classical music concerts. You also have to pay out of your own pocket for these concerts. She is very unclear about the report requirements and graded them very harshly. Do not take this course if you're not a music major.
She is a tough one to please. She would give to the lowest grade she can give you. she does give extra credit but is so long a difficult just for a few points that would make no big difference.
I took this class in fall 2020. I do not know how I got a B, but do yourselves a favor and never take this class. She expects you to know everything about music when she doesn't even teach the class. She should get fired tbh.
Don't take this class if you still want to enjoy music by the end of it. The prof assigns so much work and is too ambitious for beginner music students. Final exam has three parts which will be difficult. Don't take this class unless you have time to waste. She expects us to have the knowledge of music professionals. Save yourself, don't enroll.
This class genuinely made me lose hair, for an elective and a 101 class she did way too much. Her modules are so long you would need weeks to fully understand one. Test heavy and she's a harsh grader for literally no reason. Why am i writing essays for a music class??? She set you up to fail, no other explanation. Never take it save yourself!!!
do not take. too many hard quizzes. dont take if it not ur major
I took her fully asynchronous Music 101 class for a required elective credit, the worst mistake of my life. She only assigns readings from the text with music videos without a way to break it down. It might be part of me being tone deaf but it was terrible. Communication with her was also very unclear.
I took her asynchronous Mus101. WORST DECISION EVER! She is unforgiving toward late submissions. She will not re open quizzes even if you have a valid excuse. She gave a 3 part final! I would honestly petition to get her fired. Just very miserable toward students. If you value your mental health, do not take her class!
never take this professor!!! NEVER and NEVER
Very difficult tasks, it is very difficult to find a common language
No wonder so many people think she is awful because she is. If you take her class, get ready to regret that forever. I wish I had come here before taking her, worst mistake. NEVER take her.
asynchronous, easy class you could honestly get by without reading the articles she puts up, I did, quiz every week, final project you need to make a song of ambient sounds kind of a tough grader she doesn't accept late work at all I never had an issue with this but she is strict there. Easy pass, anyone who says not wasnt on top of the work.
While the amount of work is absurd for a introductory class, it's not too hard. You need good time management and good understanding of instructions to do the project. She honestly writes too much for instructions, but being in a group chat with your peers is especially useful for this class. Definitely make a gc or disc if you take this class.
She is a nice professor, If you had any questions she would answer back to you really fast. We had tests every week, 2 parts of a project, the final is 3 parts. This class I would say for you to be in a group chat it really helps. She is a tough grader. If you hand something in late she would take points off.
The class is challenging, with many concepts and listening requirements. Attendance is mandatory and the grading is tough. But unstuckstudy proved to be a useful tool for preparing. Overall, the class is manageable if you stay on top of the work.
I've taken IB Music Theory in High School and this is one of the most heinous intro to music classes I've ever taken. With a professor that threatens failure if you don't follow her 36 part instructions to the T. I'm graduating this fall, I would NOT recommend her class if you're just taking it to fulfill a credit. Good luck to Music majors!
I had to drop out because it was just so difficult to keep up with the work. Final project is to make music out of ambient noise. Instructions are long, wordy, and a whole lot of yapping with very little substance. She isn't horrible but her assignments are. Quizzes are difficult even if you cheat and I don't see why this is considered introductory
