awesome instructor
great guy, but needs a little more practice teaching
Just perfect! The best teacher I've ever seen and most definitely ever will!
He is such a wonderful instructor.
fare, humorous, spend much time helping students, nice instructor
an extremely thoughtful, passionate man
One word: PERFECT!
Great guy, the class is always fun. Could be better organized though
Great teacher and great friend!
a little bit unclear due to accent, but otherwise great
nice guy. help us understand. dedicated. fun class.
SOCCER!!!

cutie!!!
excellent instructor, get to know him, it's worth it.
Awesome teacher, great friend and talented musician! Oscar has it all!
Oscar is a fantastic teacher, is very helpful and honestly cares about his students
Very motivating, and encouraging. Is genuinely interested in his students succeeding. His positive attitude rubs off on others.
He is a great person. He is a bit disorganized and could be more clear in lectures.

a total sweetheart that would twist himself inside out to help a student
Wonderful person and instructor....if you MUST take a Philosophy course, this is the one to take :) Extremely insightful and interesting... Great job Oscar! It was a pleasure :)
One of the few at Mal who were made to teach. He cares deeply about his students and is passionate about the topic. A good guy, though as others said a bit disorganized and can be hard to understand, I still recommend his class
A great guy with a really easy class.
Great teacher and sense of humor. Can be hard to understand, quiet voice. But very helpful and fair.
Oscar is georgeous! He really makes an effort to help his students in any way he can.
Critical thinking and logic systems need to be presented clearly. OSCAR DOES NOT PRESENT HIS MATERIAL CLEARLY AT ALL. His accent impedes communication and he tries to make everyone "right" even when they hold opposing views. Read the text, skip
Sure he has passion... but if you aren't really intrested in philosphy you cn actually fall asleep in class... he has a low boring voice, otes can be found online... and the grade A is yours if yours if you do the work nothing explerary needed...
Oscar is an amazing teacher who truly cares about the success of his students. There are few instructors who make themselves as available as he does. If you can't make it in his class you need to go back to high school.
the course doesn't make sense... but he's HOT!!^^
I didnt understand half of this course material and Oscar was quiet and mumbly at times, but a nice guy who makes his classes fun and easy to pass. Recommend taking him

Sunday school teacher!
Very passionate about this subject and really gets into helping his students understand the material. Also a super easy marker!
Great teacher !!
very nice and humourous although hard to understand at times. fair marker & tests straight foreward. great prof!
Great person. Very approachable and takes interest with many students. Great teacher and knows the material very well. He's Very intelligent and an amazing musician. I recommend him for sure!
he mumbles in classes, I normally don't get it what he is trying to say. I am new in this course, and i asked him succeed, he beat around the bush for 15 mins and did not really answer the question. it's kinda of fun to be just sitting in class and talk for fun, but I am worried about my grades!!
Oscar is a great prof, and a genuinely good person. His lectures can be somewhat difficult to follow due to his lilting speech, but anyone with real interest in the material shouldn't have a problem. Yes, he does declare his religion, but he certainly doesn't push it upon anyone.
He is a great teacher. I expected philosophy to be horrible and some of it was, but he still made it fun and I liked comming to class because there was always a good discussion. He made something I am not interested in fun and I respect that

Oscar is a caring human being and although I have many disagreements with him this has never caused him to treat me unfairly. Comments about his religious beliefs are simplistic and unfair. 4th year students should know better than to make such weak comments. Let's talk about it in class. Double J.
Oscar is a good person and he means well, but perhaps he should not teach It does not seem to be completely safe to express different views than his. I have seen him aggresively attack and argue with some of his students when they say things that are contrary to his personal views.
Not open minded. Too religious.
Great teacher!!
The class is hard, his office hours is very unhelpful, I don't even understand what he's trying to say.
Oscar is an excellent teacher. I know a lot of students get offended by his religious views even though he's rather passive about them. Whenever he does argue for his religious views it's always very logical and philosophical, trying to prove that he's right not just trying to impose on other people. His tests were easy too. Always helpful.
Good teacher! Makes learning philosophy fun.
good guy,,, gets himself confused sumtimes! we need more straight answers! but hes a fairly easy marker... just needs to lighten up a bit!!
Nice guy, very smart, but when it comes to Philosophy of Religion, be prepared to work your ass off for a mediocre mark, IF you disagree with him.

Good teacher, but he refused to even give the possibility that god doesn't exist consideration. Didn't find out that he was a Roman Catholic 'til last day of class. Easy marker, a little confusing, but I'd take the class again
Religious dogmatist. Should be in a convent!
Never again!
Oscar does a very good job with the curriculum given to him. He put sufficient emphasis on the important schools of epistemology (rationalism, empiricism, and pragmatism), and left the post-modern garbage for the backburner. I was already motivated, but Oscar's passion made the class a delight. Discussed ideas after every class with some students.
Oscar is a great prof who is really interested in his students doing well inhis classes. If you attend and pay attention you will do well.
Oh dear GOD, do not take this class with this prof. He is ridiculous. He doesn't accept others views, isn't understanding at all. I had major conflict with him. NEVER AGAIN!!!
Oscar is a really nice guy. On top of that he's a great prof. He's caring and makes you feel like your opinion is important. Reasons his views very well while respecting his students' views.
bad ways of expression
A little hard to understand and easily sidetracked. Seems like a nice guy. I never talked to him outside class but he seemed open to talk about class or explain his own views 1 on 1 if you were interested. Fairly easy marker.
Good teacher. Good man. Never hand anything in late!!!
don't take em
Take anyone else.

Awesome professor! Cares about what he is teaching and is always willing to talk about ideas. A moral man who is fair and open-minded.
Poor Oscar. He doesn't know what philosophy even is and copies his lectures from Sparknotes. Can't improvise so don't ask him questions in class (or do for a laugh) If you want to learn, go to Justin and/or Robert. They are the only two phil. professors worth taking. In fact, it's like the overall quality of everyone else was reduced for these two.
This professor is a religious freak who uses every class to subtly put forward his own views and biases. His lectures are terrible and he is rude and unhelpful. Avoid taking him at all costs!!!!!!
This guy really has no clue how to listen to or relate to others. He also has no clue how to teach. God help us and find a way for him not to teach anymore!
I don't learn a thing in class because I'm busy barely keeping up writing down all his notes. I don't do well on the mid terms for this reason, but I have plenty of time to ponder my essay topics and get good marks on those. overall, his teaching style is hard to keep up with.
Avoid speaking of postmodernism or anything this guy hates under his nose if you care about your grade.
Oscar is a good teacher. He's takes the time to explain things clearly, he's a fair marker, and is truly interested in your success. Take him.
Speak all you want of postmodernism and things he disagrees with. Just don't write about them unless you are prepared to present a valid, logical argument that isn't rife with fallacies and poorly structured ideas. Enormously more informative than the other 111 classes.
no good
he hates nietzsche
A good teacher generally interested in your success. He goes out of his way to document his lessons and provide extra examples! Very good teacher.
Excellent teacher. He gives the class plenty of preparatory tests so that they can succeed in the exams. The course is a bit hard (lots of weekly assignments), but you learn a lot by the end of the semester. He's an honest and fair marker. Do not miss too many classes or your overall grade will suffer. He's also very approachable and friendly.
Fantastic prof. He's very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. He uses lots of interesting case studies in class to illustrate the ethical theories studied in the course. He's got a lovely Spanish accent though (hard to understand a times).
Oscar is a great teacher and an amazing person. He?s truly dedicated to his work. He gets the entire class involved in discussions, and makes you know your stuff. Very helpful if needed, fair, and considerate. I would definitely take another course with him.
Oscar puts a lot of effort into making sure the class understands concepts and theories as we go along in the semester. He makes abstract ideas interesting and approachable. His exams are not easy, but if you attend his lectures and look over the notes he provides you can do very well. I?m taking another course with him this Fall.
Loved him for 112, hated him for 362 and 443. Totally dogmatic, totally uninformed about modern philosophy, and the texts are written by creationists. Presents radical fringe views as though they're mainstream. You won't realize it until you talk to people who went to real schools and see what you missed. Should stick with 1st year classes.
A fun and interesting teacher with very well put-together classes and notes. Moves at a good pace, and is very caring about student success. He doesn't always answer questions very clearly, and can become agitated when his beliefs are challenged. Passionate, but needs to open up a bit to different viewpoints.
Oscar is very passionate and obviously loved what he teaches. He is always happy to help you understand concepts and encourages students to visit him during his office hours. He can be very stubborn, however, and does not like to have his beliefs challenged. Over all, I enjoyed Oscar as a professor.
Spent the class trying to force his religion down our throats. Would be rude and make you feel stupid if you even tried to give a point of view about anything he disagreed with. He also likes to make general comments about how "we all know abortion is bad" and then wont let you talk if you try to disagree. Isn't philosophy about open minds???
The other comments about Oscar's religion are a bit off. I certainly don't agree with his religious beliefs, but I don't feel like this ever hindered me in the course at all. Oscar is a passionate man and it is obvious how much he cares about the success of his students. I greatly enjoyed his 100 level courses.
Would 110% recommend taking any of Oscar's classes. They are fairly easy, hardly any homework (if any) and prepares you well for the tests. He make the lectures VERY interesting and entertaining, making me laugh (hard) pretty much every class. A class you actually look forward to every week.
Great guy, passionate about what he teaches, and very knowledgeable. Good class environment as he likes to provoke discussion.
I felt this class was all over the map and I never knew what was going on or what I should be doing. I also felt it was a lot harder than it should have been for an introductory philosophy class.
I really enjoyed Oscar. He's insanely passionate about what he teaches and is a very fair grader. I love the way he formats tests. He gives a pool a of questions before tests and then an option of questions on the test. He really wants his students to be successful.
Great Prof! He is very passionate and really cares about his students
Oscar is an engaging lecturer but, as others have said, he has some controversial views and it's best not to challenge them.
Very aggressive, comes after people with opinions different from his own. His religious beliefs take up a lot of the class. Treats his opinions like fact. Wouldn't recommend at all.
He is a good teacher just make sure to do questions before class. Lots of fun discussions!
Awesome professor, absolutely he has opinions but who doesn't? He wants you to do well and is always ready to give extra help. University is about healthy debate, if you have an opposite opinion and write about it well, you will get a good mark. He will debate you but it is only ever respectful and contemplative.
Fantastic professor in general. Make sure to do your reading though
Oscar's lectures are really amazing. He is very personable and knows a lot about his field, but answering his questions in class can be intimidating. You can't slack off in his classes.
Oscar is hilarious and relatable and really knows his material. He is great at starting discussions even if they may wander a bit off topic and his tests are very fair/easy if you do your reading.
Extremely high integrity. Wants you to succeed. Grades fairly with detailed explanations for each mark on exam. Has committed religious, social, and political views; he feels he is minority in predominantly liberal environment. But he grades on strength of argument, not on whether you agree with him.
I generally enjoy the man. I think hes a fantastic intellect, and i love his lectures. The guy has passion and he makes it easy to pay attention. I think you have to show up and be ready to argue. He'll challange you on your beliefs and it can come off as a bit standoffish. Passionate and intense, but a lot of fun
Oscar is such a genuine guy. Passionate about philosophy and a fair marker. He can come off a little bit intimidating, but he's all bark and no bite. 100% recommend his ethics class. You'll feel like a better person after taking it.
He's wonderful! He was friendly, patient with me since this was my first social science course, he makes philosophy interesting, he challenges opinions in a nice way and encourages us to debate with him. Reading the textbook is very important to keep up with him in class, so make sure to go each class so you don't miss anything!
Honestly, Oscar is a very engaging man and his classes are always interesting. I did learn a lot. However, he is VERY antifeminist, pro-life, and anything the environment? ANTI. His religion is FACT and there is no question that other view points/beliefs are completely false in his eyes. Agree with him or get out.
Dr. Clemotte has great knowledge. I feel very lucky to be in his class. Just engage in the class discussions and ask questions. He will do his best to explain everything. Philosophy is not an easy subject, but great teachers can make things easy to understand for us students.
I took this class because I thought it would be interesting and give me some helpful knowledge. I struggle with getting any helpful feedback from him and am maintaining a C average in class, despite normally being getting A's. You ask a simple question and he talks forever, barely covering your question. I will never take another PHIL class.
Like everyone else, you'd especially expect a philosophy professor to have their own opinions, but Dr. Clemotte tries really hard to welcome discussion from all views with the intention of broadening the knowledge of the entire class. Although I would take his class solely for his stories and character; He's a well travelled and funny person.
he was awful, never posted your grades online. no grade average ever. didn't answer questions
Oscar is definitely a tough grader and when it comes to his political opinions he gets a bad rap for not being "PC". I didn't care about that, however, it doesn't change the fact that he is a great prof and if you study what he tells you to, you'll do great. I loved his class.
This class was okay at best. The lecture material was very uninteresting and heavy with unrealistic scenarios. I disliked this class but I also don't love philosophy so maybe that's a part of it. His exams were reasonable enough but on the feedback his notes were unreadable and confusing. Wouldn't recommend.
LOVE OSCAR! He is an amazing teacher and is very passionate. Classes with him are fun. Love his vibe, makes you want to come to class often. Just be involved in his class to enjoy!
Oscar is by far my favourite professor! 20/10 I would recommend taking his class. He is very genuine and truly cares about his students, and philosophy. His love for philosophy made the course much more exciting! In my experience, anytime I put in the effort to learn and asked him questions, he was always happy to help me understand.
Not great. learned way more from textbook/friends than prof. I usually enjoy such discussions, but would bring up big topics (ie. his thoughts on how immoral abortion is or belittling pursuit of reconciliation w/ Indigenous people) in last 15 mins of class while hypocritically trying to discredit any opinions opposed to his. Gave unclear direction.
One of the best professors at VIU, without a doubt. If you happen to be lucky enough to end up in one of his classes and don't take advantage of office hours, you are making a serious mistake. His ideas and perspectives are refreshingly different from mainstream VIU and he will challenge your beliefs in a respectful manner. Work hard and read lots.
Professor Clemotte is by far the best professor at VIU. If you have the opportunity to take one of his courses and are engaged and work hard, you will learn lots and be challenged in the best way. Philosophy is a difficult subject, however, Oscar genuinely cares, is accessible through office hours/email, and provides detailed and helpful feedback.
Most Engaging professor I've ever had throughout any schooling. Bro gets absolutely fired up, definitely passionate about what he teaches. I took this class as an elective due to having a general interest in philosophy. Learned a lot through entertaining examples and great discussions.
Oscar was my fave prof this semester. He genuinely wants his students to do well, and is passionate about philosophy. You definitely have to do your part and read the book on your own time and put it into your own words. Be prepared for a life changing experience- you will question your own existence Lol.
I wish his philosophy class consisted of more discussions. My experience in PHIL112 was only lectures and notes. It wasn't the easiest to understand certain topics due to his pace and lack of focus on certain areas, making a hightened amount of after class research on many terms and theories. His class was interesting enough though. Do reccommend.
Oscar's mannerisms and jokes are hilarious, you will never leave one of his classes without laughing. In terms of the subject matter and discussions, it is very interesting. If you want to actually learn about the material, you need to read the textbook. The textbook should be your key source of knowledge, as his notes just cover key ideas.
Be careful, you may be subject to misogyny or personal comments disguised very carefully.
This prof told me that the mass genocide of children is just what happens during war. He is not wrong, but it was chilling to hear this from an ethics professor. He also was condescending and told me about how terrorists rape women. 10/10 would not recommend.
Would not recommend. Get ready to experience disguised misogyny and belittlement. Saw him high-five some men in the school hallway who called him bro. Otherwise a great course for improving your writing skills.
Save your money, time and peace. Oscar is not the best when it comes to understanding people as people and not lab rats.
Great teacher if you want to be inspired from philosophy
Oscar's philosophy class is a real thought-provoker. While the lectures can be dense, the material is engaging. Stay on top of the readings and use resources like unstuckstudy - it really helps with study prep. Interesting class overall.
Made one of the easiest classes the worst, too much pressure for a 1st year course
Very nice and knowledgeable prof. Encourages class discussion and wants to have philosophical debate.
Had Oscar for 100 a few years back and had a pretty good time. Liked his class much more than other PHIL classes I took at VIU. He did his best to explain confusing PHIL concepts and gave a lot of help before exams. I'm somewhat surprised by all the polarizing reviews. I myself thought he was very good.
Oscar is a great professor whose curricula seem well-honed, and builds on foundational knowledge well. Readings for this class were not too long, and the assigned essays were always building on them. He gives one of the best study guides I've ever seen before each test and the final.
He is definitely a fair-grader and very passionate about certain aspects of ethics. He provided a very comprehensive study guide for the mid-term and final, which was helpful.
Oscar is very thetistic and this certainly comes out at times. The course structure was two papers and a midterm and final. The exams are well structured in which you are given a list of potential topics to discussion and then you need to write about a number of them he selects on the exam and complete a case study, to argue bout. Phil100 will help
PHIL 100 was definitely a bit challenging, but Oscar comprehensively taught the material. He was a bit opinionated at times, but still encouraged open conversation. There were only three tests, which made each one very high-pressure. Yet, this class was enjoyable and engaging.
Dr. Clemotte was my first ever philosophy instructor and i must say that he made it very enjoyable, the the quizzes and practice questions were very helpful. his online lectures were easy to understand and follow, his grading criteria for the term paper was clear and conscise. Would definitely take a class with him again.
It was interesting subject that should have had a lot of discussion and debate but he managed to suck all the energy out of it. If you have ADHD this class is not for you, lectures were super dry and he was often sidetracked explaining the roots of words, one class he went off on word tangents 12+ times.
