Professor Ruiz is a pretty laid back guy. Easy to talk to, and likes what he does. I recommend him
Pretty laid back teacher, but grades really hard on essays. He's very picky how he wants his essays done, and he gives you 3 essays and a research paper.
He is pretty laid back guy. His instructions are clear but he is very picky how he wants his essays. He is not easy but if you try you will pass.
Favorite professor of all time, he makes everything easier, no exams, no midterm. Just 4 papers. He actually listens to the need of his students, and is very flexible. There is a lot of writing, of course. But he doesn't usually assign more than one page. Don't skip unless you're determined to get a F. His class is more debates that lectures.
Mr. Ruiz is a really nice man, laid-back, and funny too. His assignments are clear-cut; he only assigned like 4 papers during the semester. He is helpful if you need help revising your essay. He doesn't reply to emails, but if you're looking for an alright ENC1102 class Ruiz is your man.
Great professor. Helped me with anything I didn't understand! Def take this class!
He is a very laid back professor but if you do the work you will pass. Read and do the assignments.
Like others have mentioned, he's very laid back. The class is interesting and with him it's very easy. I slacked off a little bit and still received an A, take him.
He tends to come late to our class but that was because he had a class before us in a different room. There was homework each week usually something easy like a reflection of the reading. There's only 4 big essays in which is peer reviewed petite being turned it. Must know how to make an outline. Makes lots of bad jokes but it was Ight.
Took as the accelerated course. Awesome teacher. Lectures are great but involves participation. You will be graded on this. If you are extremely nervous about talking aloud i suggest don't take. There is a group project but it is super easy! Response paper every week. 2 exams! do the review those are the questions!!
You will not know your grade until the end of the semester. Sometimes he isn't clear what he expects on papers. He talks alllllll class and has discussions for too long instead of going over criteria and such for papers and assignments. Overall he's not a good teacher at all. Sorry
Lots of homework. Get ready to read a lot
He has everyone do a presentation. You will be lost. Nothing is found online. He reads your work twice. He doesn't help. There is so much homework. There's 5 stories per week and you have to write about them.
If you are out of high school and don't care to do anything than stay home. ITS EASY!! just read short stories and give an easy presentation. OPEN note tests. TAKE NOTES to what HE SAYS !! Inspired me to read some Murakami He's cute too.
Professor Ruiz is super hilarious, many of my classmates didn't get his jokes. You will have homework after every class, there is a lot of reading involved (articles are pretty interesting). The response for homework is just that, your own response! He really wants everyone to be apart of the discussions.
I totally recommend him. If you're ready to put in even a little bit off effort you will get an A. He's really insightful, and the class is very fun. I had a blast taking his class. There are 2 exams and a group presentation, both are pretty easy. TAKE HIM!!!!! Funny, wonderful, and easy
He's really great! Yes there is homework after every class but they are easy reads and small stories from the book. Homework is usually a response paper(your opinion on what you thought of the stories). No tests, just midterm essay and final exam. Mainly class discussion and super funny with corny jokes. Easy to participate even for the shy ones.
Easy book work for homework. Extra credit opportunities with all 4 papers. Participation counts.
He's a good professor overall but get ready to read a lot! The homework assignments are really easy because all you have to do is write what you thought of the story and that's it. There are 4 major essay's and he is a slow grader(you won't know your grade until the end of the semester).
He gives you 4 terribly LONG story's to read, weekly. And expects 3 to 4 pages of what you thought about them; The more honest the better. Just too much to do when you have a full time job.
He's a really fun professor and every class is enjoyable. There is always homework, but they're short reading assignments and just little, informal responses saying what you thought about them. He doesn't grade fast, so you might never find out how you did on that one essay. In-class essays sound scary, but he has mercy when grading them.
Overall, I would say he isnt a bad professor. The only problems is he doesn't respond to emails and takes a while to grade essays. I will never know the grade of my final essay as well as my hw and participation grade. Other than that hes a nice guy and his class was not too difficult.
He has been my favorite professor! He gives great feedback on each essay as well he will proof your rough draft if you ask! Participation is a must. A lot of in class discussions!! Def taking his class for ENC1102 also!!
He is really amazing, he might go off topic from time to time. He knows how to get his students engaged in the conversions. He does give out homework, but it's just some simple stories and all he wants is your feedback and thoughts on the stories. He likes having in-class discussions, so be prepared to talk. Overall, great professor.
He's a pretty cool professor I have to say that. I took other literature class's and they were so boring and so were the professors. But Oscar is amazing he does give out alot of reading to do like 7 and some are long, but if u put your time into it shouldn't be a problem I have a full time job and doing 4 class I still can mange to do his work
He's a great guy but the only bad thing is you will not know your grade till the end of the semester. :( he doesn't use blackboard takes a while to respond to emails. But other than that hes an easy class just do the work and be prepared for the class if he says u need this don't wait the last min
Professor Ruiz made English fun, it was more of a discussion class but thats what had the class engaged. By the end of the semester he had students participating who usually did not participate. Super easy we just read stuff from the book and wrote a one page paper on it, twice a week. Now I can write four page essays like its nothing.
Professor Ruiz is one of the best professors I have ever had the chance to learn from. I took the Saturday morning class. There was a lot of reading but the stories were interesting and you have an entire week to read them. BE PREPARED, read the work and show up to class and you will excel. He provides great lectures and keep the class interesting
I didn't know my grade until a day before my graduation when it was posted on panterweb. He's a easy professor he was funny as well. The stories are long and you have a week to read 3-8 stories and write a response. It wasn't so bad just read take notes and talk in class
Overall a good professor. The class consisted of class room discussions (which you will need to involve yourself in), 3-8 readings and 1-3 page responses (based on how much reading you were assigned to ). The class in the beginning can be quite intimidating because of the amount of reading and writing, but just stay on top of it and you'll do fine.
I love this professor. I took him Fall 2018. You will work in his class but he is so worth it. His sense of humor is from out of this world funny. He does keep you the entire class and I took him on Saturday morning. He was one of my favorites out of the four classes I took. I would recommend him I ended his class with an A.
hes a pretty cool teacher I had him last semester and as long as you care about your grade and do the work youll be straight wish I could have taken him for enc1102
Doesn't use blackboard, or tell you your grade throughout the entire semester. You won't know the homework if you miss a class because he only tells it in class, also doesn't have a set schedule on the syllabus, or even a schedule at all. Talks about himself the entire class & almost makes it seem like he enjoys failing students.
Currently taking this professor and I am very disappointed, let me elaborate. First, he gives a lot of readings and you have to write a response for every class. I still dont know my grade btw. He is a tough grader, honeslty if you can find a better professor jsut skip OSCAR because you will regret it. Do NOT TAKE HIM
I had him for 2 semesters (LIT1000 and AML2631) and hes been nothing but AMAZING. For LIT1000 there is a textbook full of short stories but he also prints them out for you. For AML2631, we read 7 different books (all good/interesting). Youre graded on responses, participation, and 1 group project.
He is very knowledgable and caring, you will have to read and write a small essay for each story. Participation a must! no extra credit, but if you do every assignment will pass the class. I would def taking him again.
This class is ALL about reading. We are reading 100 pages a week, with a total of about 10 books for the semester, all with 300 pages or more. They are GREAT historical stories with a little fiction. HE IS A GREAT TEACHER. To pass you must read books and write reviews on them. We discuss the book in class and thats your grade.
Worst professor ever! He clearly stated from the beginning that he could fail us if he wanted to. He is barely on topic, unorganized and jokes around a lot. He seems like someone who either doesnt know what hes doing or doesnt care about his job. His attitude says it all!
My favorite professor!! His classes are pretty chill you just discuss the homework due that day. Theres homework due every class, its not hard just tedious. You have to read about a 2 page story then write a page response just on what you thought of it. Cant skip more than 3 classes or you're removed.
I recommend this professor to the students that try their best and actually reads the passages he assigns; the readings are very interesting. As long as you participate in his class, do your homework, and show up to class for his lectures, you will pass. He's a phenomenal teacher, he's very funny and really entertaining. wish I took him for ENC1102
I am honestly shocked that people have bad things to say about this professor. If you show up, do the homework, and participate in class, it is an easy A. He assigns homework every class, but it's nothing horrible. The assigned readings are always really interesting, and you'll get the opportunity to share your thoughts in class in group discussion
Hes a really great professor. Theres homework every class but its just reading along with your personal take on the story. He might come off as intimidating the first two classes but after a while hes a pretty easy-going professor. Just make sure you actually read the texts or listen to the audio books (which are provided) and youll pass.
The worse professor ever. The class is a fricking show all the time. It is only him talking about stupid/ personal things that's nothing have to do with the class. But in the end of course you'll have 2 long articles-50 pages total to read & answer more than 20 questions. If you wanna learn, never take him, due he's like a kid, get mad easily.
This was one of the most confusing classes I have taken. Directions were unclear for assignments, and it was difficult to ask any questions because it seemed like an issue and everything seemed to be a joke. I also think this course being online did not help the situation at all and not much feedback provided. Grades are very prolonged as well.
This was a terrible class to take. The professor was not clear on he expectations and was very vague with instructions. All we did was read short stories and them write a quite response. Class time was wasted with nonsense topics and it took forever to even get the class started. Never gave grades. This class was a waste of time and energy.
I keep seeing a lot of negative reviews over Professor Ruiz but he is honestly one of the best! He does assign a bit of readings, even I would fall behind sometimes, but he was pretty flexible with the journal submissions so if you did it, you would pass! I took him twice for Intro. to Lit. and Hispanic American Lit. If you participate, you pass.
As a person hes really funny and a cool person. However, as a teacher he gives a lot of homework. Be prepared to read and write A LOT. Usually we do 4-5 stories a week that we have to read and analyze. Its not super hard just very time consuming. Our analysis for each story is half a page and participation in class discussions is mandatory.
I saw on here that his classes weren't that hard. I expect there to be work of course and as the other review said homework every week which is true but 4 stories per week and a response paper on it. He doesn't give clear instructions on how he wants you to write the response paper and doesn't even teach. He also doesn't update grades on blackboard
he never teaches he talks no sense doesn't upload grades in blackboard never gives you feedback on your assignments and you never know what grade you have in his class i could never take his class again
Hes a great teacher! He loves to talk and joke around with the class. He does assign work every class but as long as you show up, participate and do the work its an easy A. Very understanding teacher would 1000% take him again
If you want to get a good grade this professor is not a choice. I took literature, 4 readings responses every week but not enough for him. HE NEVER POST GRADES TIL THE LAST DAY OF THE SEMESTER. HE NEVER FEED BACK SO BASICALLY YOU CANT NEVER IMPROVE YOUR GRADES. I did all readings but for not enough participation he gave us D as midterm grade
I wish I could go back on time AND DONT TAKE HIS CLASS. I did all of my homework and still didnt pass. He gets off topic really easy. If you didnt turn your homework on time we would confront you in front of the class, making you feel bad for the person he was talking to.
I would not take him ever again. My experience was exactly like some reviews posted on here. He does not give you grades to improve, he send an email on the midterm and then final. All my work was submitted on time. If you can, wait for another Professor. Ruiz is not worth the stress.
Any absence after two will result in an automatic F for the course. If you do not have your computer's camera on during class time, you will be considered absent. *** Students who are seen using an electronic device during class time will have to write a 5-10 page essay on the topic of their choosing.*** WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS PROFESSOR!!!!!
This guy takes his job way too seriously. If you want to have an extremely stressful and boring semester in ENC1102 I recommended this guy. If you have anything come up in your personal life or anything slip-ups due to the fact that people are not perfect, you will most likely be given an F or be dropped from the class.
Did not post grades until the end of the semester, this made me nervous because I did not know what grade I was going to have until the end of the semester. Will you read articles from the textbook or articles he emails. The readings are long but you do learn from them. He has you write a response paper that can be between 1-2pgs the final was 6pgs
He was great. he does give lots of readings, some long, but interesting, with a response paper for each. Usually 1-2 pages, can be annoying but easy. 2 big papers. 1 based off of readings and other readings/online research. They're 4-6 pages and he is very nit picky with the format. Overall good class and funny guy. Attendance matters too.
Weekly response papers(1page),two major essays(4-6pages). Barely any feedback given during the whole semester, his classes are just discussions about weekly readings(also a lot of meaningless conversation). He didn't teach anything about writing essays. You can't miss a class,no matter the reason. Only post grades at the end. Wouldn't take again.
Wonderful professor. He's is very understanding and keeps the class engaged.
In the beginning he might seem intimidating but within course you find out he is funny&very understanding.Every week you read a section of a book then you will have to write a response on what you read which is not formal writing which makes it easier you have 1 presentation in a group & in final do you have to write a MLA style paper!Plz take him!
He assigns weekly reading homework and you respond what you think, of you don't do those you won't pass
He's very relax if you do the homework they are easy.unless u don't have time take someone else.
He's clear about how he grades, and doing that homework is smooth sailing
He's funny
This was the most confusing class I have taken. If you don't have your computer's camera on during class time, you will be marked absent. He will boot you out if you miss a chance to participate in class or if you do not hear his questions. He does not give you grades to improve. He always mentions he can fail you if he wants. He never teaches. RUN
Professor Ruiz is a very down-to-earth and respectable man. His lectures/discussions are always engaging and make me think a lot more about our readings. His only problem is the lack of showing grades, but if you're participating and doing the homework it shouldn't bother you. The homework is all opinionated which gives freedom to write anything.
If you want a smooth first college class sure take this one but be aware that you will not know what your final grade looks like until the literal last day of class. he does not give feedback on the weekly assignments so if you want to know what to do better ask someone else.
He gives homework, including reading an article he chose and writing a response to it but he doesn't say what he wants from the paper. He doesn't update his grades until the final day,so you're in the dark if you're doing anything wrong. He doesn't teach English but talks about nonsense the entire time. A strict no-phone policy and you must be there.
You can't track your grade and if you do not use the gaming app, Discord, then you will have no access to the course material, assignments, and documents. He refused to use anything that Palm Beach State College has access to. He records and calculates all of his classes' grades on a sheet of paper. PBSC Has no access to Discord.
Outstanding professor. While there are a lot of writing assignments, they are relatively easy to do. He has a good sense of humor as well.
Lots of reading I was genuinely tweaking at my monitor at 4 am.
He has a great sense of humor, but that does not stop him from being a very effective teacher. He will give very in-depth answers for your questions in class and feedback on your papers.
This professor gives very interesting and engaging lectures, responds pretty quickly to messages and answers any questions you may have. a good amount of homework but it's all fairly easy.
You have to have discord!! He's a funny teacher and class is fun. My problem is he doesn't show your grades until the last day. Lots of reading!! He doesn't really give you too much feedback back on your writing, but he does tell you what he's looking for. If you didn't do the homework then don't come to the next class, because he'll kick you out.
This professor is very picky, he doesn't give you feedback, he sends you to read every day not the best professor
Would not take him again because is too much lecture and response papers to everything.
personally i did not like him he was picky about attendance and you had to be there on time if not he will lock the door on you , you cant use the phone to check the time if not points are deducted and accused me of plagarizing without having evidence and made it into a big problem for no reason and ever single assignment had to be at least 2 pages
Mr. Ruiz is an amazing professor who genuinely cares about his students. His teaching style is Fun , concise, and interesting, and he's always willing to spend extra time outside of class to ensure that all of his students get the assistance they need to be successful. I highly suggest taking one of his courses!!! Advice: Tell him if your strugglin
This professor is AWFUL too many readings and assignments, and he seems to ENJOY TALKING ABOUT FAILING STUDENTS. He doesn't actually teach, just shows up, asks pointless questions, and brings up irrelevant scenarios. He's also quick to accuse students of plagiarism. I regret not checking reviews before registering. CHOOSE ANOTHER PROFESSOR!!
Professor Ruiz is amazing! He is funny, realistic, and clear on everything. If you're lazy... you will struggle because he does expect the best from everyone. However, he grades based off pass or fail. So, as long as you do the work with your own opinions and show that you read the papers you'll do well.
This professor shows us more than just English he also gives us life lessons and he is very respectable would take again.
accuses students of usin AI
He was unnecessarily cruel with no real helpful feedback. If you have to take this class for a passing grade, its fine. Just don't expect to learn and be prepared for when he uses you for the butt of a joke. Its easy to figure out what his writing preferences are to get a passing grade. But If you love writing, find someone else. He wont help.
Professor Ruiz is an amazing professor. I took him for an express class, and he told us right away it would be accelerated. He truly loves to teach and is great at it. Attend and participate, or you won't get the grade you want. Do your work on time and avoid procrastinating, or you'll fall behind. If you love or hate reading I recommend taking him
He's a good professor. He likes what he's doing, but if you want to be better at writing it's not for you cause he doesn't give any feedback. No idea if you're failing or passing until the last day.
As someone who enjoys reading, I really liked this class. Unfortunately, I cannot give .5 ratings, but I think a 3.5 is what I would give. He's very fun and the material is interesting, however you will be expected to participate and work with others. This class also may conflict with your schedule if you have 4 or more classes due to the workload.
Do not take it if you're busy because there are reading/writing assignments every other day and does not play with AI
He is not a reasonable grader; there are two essays a week. He talks a lot, and participation matters even if you do the essays.
Oscar Ruiz is top 3 funniest professors in pbs, although his work is on the heavier side hes open to providing necessary help in order for your success, group discussions were always delightful and he is beyond understanding! would take his class again. Just make sure to always be on your toes when taking this class!
That he is really strict and doesn't let you redeem yourself. If you have accommodations, he will not let you use them whatsoever. He is nice, but not when it comes to his assignments.
Prof Ruiz is funny, he picks very interesting topics on technology and its effects. It is a writing class, so expect many written opinion responses as HW; he offers near to no feedback and no late work, so you don't really know anything, including grades. pass/fail grading scale, participation is key. If you read and do the work, you'll do well.
