A great professor that truly wants his students to learn about the material instead of stress about tests or quizzes. You can tell he is passionate about what he teaches and often includes stories involving his own experiences while lecturing. Taking excellent notes is the key to doing well in this class.
Professor Torres is very clear cut in what he wants students to learn and take away from his lectures. Your class grade is almost solely based off of the three exams and five quizzes besides the two 2-paged papers. There is a lot of material to cover in this class. I would recommend for exams creating flashcards based off of previous quizzes.
One of the best teachers I've taken, very down to earth. He exclusively tells you what to study. Pay attention during lecture and ask questions, he tells you what will be on future quizzes/exams.
I love professor Torres. He really cares about his students and he's also very helpful. He even lets you redo quizzes or exams if you weren't satisfy with your grade. His test and quizzes are hard but he gives you a study guide with the same questions as the exam. I'd definitely take his class again.
Loved this professor! Mr. Torres tells you exactly what to study for the tests, and makes his lectures fun. Grade is based off of the 5 quizzes(all group quizzes)and 3 tests, as well as two easy two-paged papers. Attendance isn't mandatory, but you will miss out on good, helpful lectures if you skip. Take good notes and study and you will get an A
This teacher is very nice and intelligent, and he respects his students. However, where the class struggles is his non-multiple choice, jargon filled tests. The amount of studying one has to do to properly prepare is obscene. It's as if the professor thinks this is the only class we are taking. Unrealistic expectations for a GE course.
Great professor, exams are hard if missed class, be prepared to study.
As long as you attend Quizzes and the test reviews you should pass the class. Its very easy all the classes are powerpoint lectures but he says what is going to be one the quiz and exams.
Prof. Torres tells you in advance what you'll need to know for the quizzes and tests, and he holds reviews before each test which was very helpful. All of the content is covered in the lectures (which he posts on blackboard), so I wouldn't spend money on the textbook. He is just an overall nice guy, too.
Professor Torres is an awesome professor. I came into 260 intimidated by the material. Professor explained it very well and turned that mountain into a pasture. Show up to class and you will understand
Great professor! Learned a lot by attending lectures. You will pass easily if you show up and do the work
Interesting lectures, opened the door to future psych classes for me
Dr. Torres worked at the NIH as a neuroscientist prior to SD Mesa, so not only is he wicked smart, but his level of professionalism, ethos and body of knowledge is expansive without a massive ego. He truly cares about his work and the students he teaches. If you're the respectful type who shows up and does your best, you'll love Dr. Torres.
Try to attend class because even though I didn't take notes I still retained the information. His quizzes and exams are straight forward and if you ask him what does he mean by a question he will explain even better and it helps you answer the questions. He is a really chill guy but be respectful. If you can't make class just send a quick email
Professor Torres is a great teacher! The only thing is there aren't a lot of assignments, so do good on the exams! Exams are tough bc it's all short answer/fill in the blank, so study or you won't pass! 3 Exams, 5 group quizzes, and 2 easy papers. Also DON'T buy the book, you don't need it. His lectures and exam reviews are enough to pass!
Best Psychology professor ever taken in my college life. His class is clear and you know exactly what to expect because he will tell you. He is very smart but doesn't have a huge ego which make his clas very informative and fun. You have to study for the test because they are open question but he will review before the test. If you can, take him.
I enjoyed his class, just make sure you study or you don't have much of a chance on passing. He is very intelligent but without ego. Very understanding and accommodating if "life happens." Pay attention to his lectures, they will give you clarity on the material, the PowerPoints only can help so much.
Great Professor, friendly and knowledgeable about this field. Encourages students to think in depth. Exams are quite easy as long as you study. Heavy lectures but yet informal and interesting. Minimal usage of textbook but I will highly recommend reading it if you are going into a psy degree
HIGHLY recommend Torres, he's so knowledgeable. Currently taking Human Physiology and I constantly find myself referring to old notes from PSYC 260. He makes difficult concepts easy to understand and follow. Quizzes are open-group. He uploads lectures online but makes things way easier to understand if you attend lecture. One of the best at Mesa!!!
Great professor-he's funny, smart & cares about the class. Feel free to ask him to explain things again. Only 2 short essays for hw. All quizzes are done in groups (but really the whole class worked together & he didn't stop it). Tests & quizzes have no multiple choice. A LOT of info in every lecture. Don't skip! Fun sheep brain dissection btw.
Look forward to this professor. He is super funny. He answers all questions even dumb ones. If you miss class you still have a chance to study the lecture online because it is POWERPOINT base, but missing a class is a loss because of how interesting the professor is. 6 quiz, 3 EXAM, 2 assignments. i didn' even have to study just be in class.
Best Professor EVER!!! I have learned so much! His lectures are gold! He let's you know exactly what will be on the quizzes(5)/ exams(3). There are 2 writing assignments(2pgs each). He is funny and really cares about his students. He would ask us to ask questions throughout the lecture. His power points are everything, everything you need to know.
Great tough course, but taught by a wonderful prof. You will do great in the class if you listen and put some time to review. About 5 quizzes and 3 exams along with 2 papers.
This is a class you definitely need to study for. Tests are NOT multiple choice and all fill in the blank. All the information are in his lectures, I didn't buy the textbook and I got an A. Just attend all his lectures and take good notes. He's really funny and his lectures aren't boring at ALL. He's very nice and helpful. GROUP QUIZZES HELPFUL!
His way of lecturing is great, and does a nice job at thoroughly explaining concepts or doubts students may have. No real homework, just studying for the exams. Final exam is NOT cumulative which is also a huge plus. However, exams do require proper preparation. Lots of studying. Would definitely take him again.
TAKE Professor Torres if you can at ALL costs. Great professor who cares about teaching you what you need to know & how to be prepared for the REAL world. Lecture style is great and very interactive. For a topic that I wasn't really interested much going into it, I learned a lot and would absolutely take Professor Torres again. Awesome dude!
I've taken 260 & 255 with him. I really like his method of teaching & the way he does his tests. He doesn't believe in multiple choice so it's all short answer & fill in the blank, making it easier to get partial credit. If you show up to class he lets you know a lot of the material that will be on the exams, he's very no bs. Hard but worth it.
Dude is a great professor who really care. He takes topics that could be confusing and make them as understandable as possible. His exams and quizzes are fair and is willing to move his schedule around to accommodate for the class. There is even time that he will review before the exams.
Great professor and cares about teaching you the knowledge you really need. Have to study because all tests are fill in the blank and short answer. Actually learned a lot in this class because of this and as long as you pay attention and study a little at home to refresh the topics, you'll be fine
I really enjoyed the class. The quizzes/exams are fill in the answer (definitions/term), but his lectures explain the material very well. Also his ppts were very helpful. His experience in research made his examples interesting and provided insight about the field. I could see he sincerely wants students to learn the material.
His lectures are clear and engaging. You have to attend class if you want to do well in the tests. Grades were based on 3 quizzes, 2 tests, and 3 reviews and 1 essay. Sounds like a lot, but he clarifies everything really well in class and repeats exactly what you need to know in order to do well. No crazy surprises and answers all questions.
Such an amazing teacher!!! I took him for psyc101 and he is the reason Im going to be a psyc major. As long as you show up to class and take notes on his lectures, you will pass both the quizzes and tests. He lets you take the quizzes in groups (super helpful) and the tests are almost direct questions from his lectures. TAKE HIM!!
Great And entertaining Lectures.
Oscar is amazing. His lectures were always interesting and funny. He always ensures that everyone in the class understands the material and ensures all questions are answered. Exams are not scantron but we have exam review days and quizzes can be done with other people. I've taken him for all 3 classes at Mesa and I wish he taught more!
Prof Torres is funny and this is an easy A class. If you attend the lectures he points out the things on the powerpoints that will be on the tests and quizzes. There was only one short paper & otherwise your grade is all simple multiple choice tests & quizzes.
Dr. Torres takes the dense material that is physio psych and teaches it in a simplified and easy to understand way. There is a lot of material to learn, but his lectures, slides and reviews are thorough. He will answer any question related to the lessons. He is always available during office hours and is very generous with his make-up policy.
Hes super cool. Hes a little dated with never posting grades but hell bring grades to class. You dont need the book. Quizzes and exams are based off of lectures. I suggest recording him. He talks fast BUT ask him questions. He does not mind at all to repeat him self. I enjoyed his class the most. Study your notes youll be good!
the best psychology teacher! hes great!!!
Professor Torres was one of the best professors I have ever taken. Im bummed our class had to be moved online because his lectures were fun to attend even at 8 in the morning.
Dr. Torres one of the best professors Ive had. I actually looked foward to going to his classes. His lectures were clear to understand and he would pause between his lectures to make sure you understood and tell you what will be on quizzes. I was so bummed that it had to transition to online due to pandemic.
Grade is only based off quizzes and exams so if you are not a good test taker I would avoid this course. As long as you watch the lectures and take notes you will do well in the class. 100% of the answers to the quiz and exam questions are in the lectures. I didn't have to crack the textbook open the entire session.
One of the best professors that I have ever had. Do the extra credit paper. He's funny, friendly, and VERY knowledgable. He explains difficult concepts in a simplified way to help students understand and retain info. Mostly graded on quizzes/exams. Book is not mandatory, but helpful as a reference point (especially at beginning of semester).
A KING! He is super smart and gives amazing lectures. If you are interested in psychology take him! Lectures are long, but take notes. I wish this was a synchronous class. I might take him for his other courses because he is great at explaining.
Professor Torres is great at explaining things. He will even straight up give you the answers to some of the questions on the test, but don't be fooled. The tests are still hard. I deducted a star because despite mentioning it multiple times, he didn't utilize the calendar on Canvas and didn't allow the chat option during Zoom lectures.
Professor Torres knows his subject, teaches it extremely well, and grades fairly. I already have a Bachelor's degree from UC San Diego and took this class to get into grad school. Not only was he better at lecturing than the majority of my UCSD professors, but he was so much more caring of his students. I would take any class that he taught!
He's pretty chill. You don't need to go to class, but if you do, you can ask him questions and he would be glad to answer them. There are recording nearly for everything, so no fear of missing out on materials. The class is easy as long as you watch the material and do the assignments. I personally did not like his teaching style
Professor Torres is very passionate about this subject he teaches. He is very good at his lectures and answering questions. Always willing to help and very understanding about life and works with you.
Prof Torres is an extremely genuine and caring professor. He knows his stuff and will make sure that you know it too. Sometimes he has trouble limiting the information in his lectures to just the essentials and it can be tough to process, but he's such a great person, that it's worth it anyway.
Hes honestly an amazing teacher, if you are a psychology major take him! you will learn so much and he makes it easy to understand. He's super patient and will go over the test before hand to address some questions that might come up in the test. He's honest and will give you great advice if you are a psychology major. Hes not too hard either.
I took Dr. Torres's Psych Research class online when all classes switched to off-campus during the pandemic. Dr. Torres is a really chill professor. Most of his assignments had flexible due dates. His lectures were well taught and he explained things very clearly. In all honesty, I couldn't ask for a better professor. Definitely would take again.
Professor Torres was very passionate about everything he was teaching. Watch and take notes for each lectures, go to the reviews and its easy to pass the quizzes and exams. He cares a lot about his students and really enjoys teaching his class. I would recommend him to everyone!
He is patient, very nice, and his exams are not too difficult. Make sure you do take notes, many details are only mentioned during lectures. Other than being an awesome professor, the only thing is that he does not really remember his students.
Professor Torres is an amazing instructor! He provides a nurturing learning environment and really strives for us to be successful. He is always willing to go deeper into topics during lecture and gives detailed lectures/exam reviews - so no surprises on exams or assignments. Hes also very understanding and responds to emails in a timely manner.
I've had Professor Torres twice. Both classes were great and fun! He is clear and helpful. His exams and quizzes are easy because he has study guides and goes over all the material needed. It is not mandatory, but I would recommend attending lectures. He has recordings of each but answers q's before & after class and sometimes they are not recorded
I wish every professor taught like Prof Torres. He is extremely clear in how the class will be graded and what you need to study to get an A. Hes cares about the individuals and making sure they fully understand the concepts.
Right away I could tell Professor Torres genuinely cared & wanted to teach us. Hes organized, & gives good lectures. Great study guides and exam reviews. But there are only 10 things graded!! Also, its been 3 weeks since class ended & he has not posted grades (was always behind). At the end of the day hes an amazing person who will motivate you!
This was a great professor but what really makes him stand out is the clarity of his class. There are no secret or obscure questions on his exams. Plus his lectures were really interesting.
Professor Torres goes beyond what is required to help students succeed. He was able to work with DSPS for proctors even during a skeleton crew summer session. His lectures are organized, clear, and had powerpoints as well as videos for review. Pay attention to the reviews and pass the tests, that simple.
Dr. Torres takes his time for what can be unfamiliar material in the form of an intro research class. Even for students who struggle he was attentive and patient. His demeanor keep the material from being dull and his personal experience offers some unique insight into research. Comprehensive reviews are offered, use them and get that A.
Dr. Torres takes his time with lectures because he wants you to understand the material. He does an excellent job at explaining the grading criteria for each paper.
Honestly, Professor Torres is so clear and organized with his work. Not really good at psychology but he made it seem so easy to understand the material. his lectures are so entertaining and insightful. He is really respectful and makes it simple. Exams are easy IF YOU STUDY. Please take him.
Great lectures and realistic in what to expect in the area pf Psychology. I would take this course again not a big math fan but he was able to teach those of us. Gives wonderful insight on what to do to help yourself be successful in this career path. Great teacher!
He is a caring and flexible professor. It was an online class. Basically, watch his lectures, takes notes, and a quiz every week. I used to play the videos on faster speed, he speaks very calmly. His lectures and powerpoints have everything you need. Exams are not hard. The class runs on automatic. He sends a weekly video of what's next.
test heavy and no homework options to bump your grade. I feel as though the lectures don't cover the entirety of what we need as students to succeed on the exam. Sure, it's a fun class. But when it comes down to getting a good grade it seems challenge, especially considering the entire class is barely getting by and it's week 6.
His course grades are entirely based off of test and quiz grades, which might seem stressful but he also is a really good professor (I could understand harder materials because of his teachings). He's very understanding and reasonable so if you happen to miss a quiz or a test you'll be able to makeup.
I absolutely love this professor. He makes me want to learn and enjoy everything about psychology. I'm not really into research but he piques my interests with how funny and engaging his lectures are. He truly cares about students and wants them to succeed. as a minority I don't feel overlooked. He deserves high ratings all around! He's amazing !
10/10! Great Lecturer! Try not to miss class just because he teaches a lot of new material each class. However if you take notes and pay attention, you will pass every test/quiz. He reviews exactly what he is putting on quizzes, so no trick questions or confusion. Really engaging professor and really funny!
The best psychology professor I have ever had. This course was hard, but he made it easy because he was very clear on what to expect on exams/quizzes (he didn't trick you, which made this class even better). He truly sets you up for success and not failure. I would definitely recommend this class to anyone, plus he is funny so be prepared for jokes
Prof Torres is great and has a love for biology almost more than psychology, which is probably why I liked this class. This course is graded SOLELY on quizzes and exams. If you want an A you have to put in a little effort to do well. He basically gives you the answers though. Study and get an A on each quiz and exam if you want an A. Easy class.
This class is based entirely on quizzes and exams. He does reviews in class for preparation of exams and allows you to retake the test if you got a D or below. For quizzes, there were a few questions about seemingly irrelevant details that were only briefly mentioned in class. He does a great job explaining the material.
Such a good professor! He's always available to help outside of class and his class was one where I didn't accidentally tune out the lecture. Lectures were engaging and interesting and you are only graded from quizzes, exams & a paper. If you show up and review for the exams, it's fairly easy!
Great professor . Very accommodating and also wants you to understand and learn the knowledge but also very flexible with you .
no homework just quizzes and exams but does great at lectures at a pace where everyone would understand, very clear teaching and funny
One of my favorite teachers in this school. He really cares and is always available for help. Sadly I had a few personal things going on during school resulting in my C. But I also didn't speak up. Thank you professor, you are the best!
I really enjoyed Professor Torres' class. He was very clear on what was going to be tested on and took his time to answer questions in class. I really liked that we did not need to buy a textbook as all the material is covered during his lectures which are also available online. I would strongly recommend Professor Torres!
I would say Professor Torres is probably my favorite teacher I have had since starting college! His classes are very engaging, he's funny, gives extra credit opportunities, reviews before quizzes/exams, and is very respectful. The main thing is to pay attention during the lectures because that is what we are graded on, so take plenty of notes!
Professor Torres let me take quizzes I missed for full credit! I did not need much assistance in this course as I had prior experience. I am retaking him in person and will leave another review at the end of the semester. Overall his course was rather easy and he is very understanding with missing quizzes. 10/10 recommend!
Prof. Torres is very helpful. He takes the time to answer everyone's questions, even if he just answered it. During the lectures he indicates questions you can expect. So taking notes and reviewing your notes will be great to score well. He also reviews the quiz/exam in class before exam day. That review is very valuable.
I took him for PSYC 260 and now 255 - great lectures, easy to understand *despite* the hard concepts, and mostly graded by multiple-choice quizzes/exams. He usually throws in a few points of extra credit/curve. He will take the time to answer questions and re-explain concepts. 10/10 prof, there is no reason to not take him!
I took him for PSYC 260 and now 255! He gives clear lectures, there are hard concepts, and mostly graded by multiple-choice quizzes/exams. He gives some extra credit/curve exams. He will take the time to answer questions and re-explain concepts. Very caring and easy to talk to about academics aside from just his class. STUDY! You will pass.
I took him for PSYC 260 and now 255! This class has many hard concepts and is only graded by multiple-choice quizzes/exams. He will take the time to answer questions and re-explain concepts. Very caring and easy to talk to about academics aside from just his class. STUDY, and you will pass. He is very understanding and a great teacher.
He broke the scale for a reason. Greatest professor I've taken at Mesa College. He is extremely well-versed in the subject and makes it easy for those with minimum subject knowledge to understand. The class is difficult in a vacuum, but he goes very in depth, uses good metaphors, and loves to answer your questions. Will never make you feel stupid.
I really enjoy his lectures, but he wasn't always transparent about material that would be on the tests/quizzes. He always talks about how he would never deceive us, yet he includes topics in tests/quizzes that he didn't go over in lectures. I only passed the class because because of study groups students formed. Reach out to students for notes!!
Although this class was challenging, it was extremely interesting. If you apply yourself and put effort into your attendance and note taking you will do well. His lectures were never boring. No homework but a decent amount of quizzes/tests. However he does give hints as to what will be on them
Professor Torres gives great lectures. He is very good at explaining the material, gives you enough time to finish the assignments and even gave us an extra credit opportunity. He is awesome. I would definitely take another one of his classes.
The class was just ok. I felt quite bored at times but overall Professor Torres provides an easy introduction to psychology. It was purely lectures, quizzes and tests.
I say participation matters bc you should show up to class even though it's not mandatory. You get info you'll need for exams & understand/remember it better if you come regularly. Dr. Torres is very funny, engaging, & understanding but no b.s. Exams worried me but ended up being easy to study for & he does some review videos that cover everything!
I took Psych 255 and 260 from Dr. Torres in the summer of 2024 and had a fantastic time! He's a real character with a lot of experience in laboratory settings. Ask him to tell you about his time at the NIH, those stories are very cool! Great lecturer, really got me excited for the subject. As long as you participate and study, it's not a hard A.
Most of the reviews are outdated. He no longer uses short answer tests, only multiple choice. Frequently gets facts wrong during lecture and never self-corrects, just doubles down. Every test had at least one mistake on it. Funny, but doesn't actually care about psych. Discouraged me from writing a research paper because it's too "hard".
Dr. Torres is an incredible professor. I took him for PSYCH 260 lab, and he explained everything clearly and with patience. He made the class enjoyable with his humor and approachable style, which really helped me stay engaged. His passion for the subject inspired me, and I'm excited to take more classes with him.
I took his PSYC260 Lab! What a great class, highly recommend to anyone looking to take a lab, go into psychology or neuroscience, or just go into a lab setting in general. He is very knowledgable, allows for group quizzes and open notes, supplies a free textbook in canvas, and makes class enjoyable. I feel like I am more prepared because of him.
If you're lucky enough to get Dr. Torres, do it. He's patient, kind, and truly cares about his students. He doesn't just teach,he mentors, & encourages. He even came in on his day off to help me with a research project. He made me feel supported, not like a burden. You won't just earn a good grade, you gain a professor who goes the extra mile:)(z)
All of these positive ratings are not accurate. He rarely responds to emails, gives several quizzes with duplicate and misleading questions, the three tests in this class aren't hard material wise but he makes them difficult in the way he makes the questions confusing. Also on answer keys, he selects a wrong answer as the right one. Avoid!!!
Cooked eternally
Professor Torres and nice and funny, however his quizzes and tests are not good. Almost always has a duplicate question, a question with the wrong correct answer, and sometimes contain material that was not previously learned or even talked about.
Grades consisted of 6 quizzes and 3 exams, all multiple choice only so this class was not difficult at all. Learning done through video lectures. He does not seem to respond to emails/messages but otherwise I'd recommend taking this course for an easy A
I don't recommend him. He told the class he's a mean person and told students to not expect him to be compassionate or helpful with them that because he won't be. He also said he isn't going to help students and doesn't care what they do. He also doesn't respond to emails and he told the class he hates his job.
Difficult subject, but the easiest professor you will get. Absence is okay; however, lecture notes are important to succeed. Only 2 easy writing assignments, 3 exams, 5 quizzes, and one extra credit opportunity. Always messing up on exams/tests, but that means free points. Super lenient if you need to do an exam/quiz during office hours.
The best professor you will ever take. His lectures are very clear and easy to understand, cracks jokes, and is very kind and caring. He literally can do no wrong in my eyes, he is that amazing. Tests are closed note but if you show up every class day, take notes, pay attention, and study what he teaches, you will pass. Absolutely choose him!
I took Professor Torres for PSYC 260, 255, and 260L in the same semester. He's a great lecturer and clearly knows his stuff! His material is very manageable, 6 quizzes and 3 exams total. He reviews before each exam day. Even if he makes a mistake, he is fair! He will definitely teach you lifelong skills and knowledge. He's the best prof, take him!
He was such a great prof, I took him for 255 and 260. He gives clear expectations of what he expects you to learn, just pay attention and ask questions. He is great at deferring when people are asking too many unrelated questions and is killer at setting boundaries. He may not be your cup of tea if you need an abundance of clarification.
Used each class to talk about how much he hated his job, coworkers, admin and the college. He spent a lot of time talking about how the psychological research field is filled with selfish & cut-throat people and held a very negative view on everything related to research and education. You can be informing without bringing personal bias into it.
Amazing class, I took his online course for Psychology 101 and all we had to take was tests basically, lectures and slideshows were also easy to understand.
easy class. just pay attention to lecture and study your notes for the quiz/exams but it's really not that hard bc they're multiple choice. only gripes are that he never seems to check his emails and he makes mistakes writing the quizzes but he'll fix them if you tell him
pretty chill, just attend lecture and make sure you understand the material
Super lenient and chill. Showing up to class isn't mandatory but I would recommend going anyway because he tells you some pretty important stuff. If you miss an exam he will let you make it up. He is also really funny and relatable. It's difficult to reach him outside of class but it's not a huge issue. Really easy class.
