VERY EASY, Quizzes/tests are open book/open note!
For all those who just need this class to graduate, take this guy! Like the last person said, very easy, open book tests and quizes, and he will go to great lengths to make sure you understand everything.
This guy is a goof ball, and can't even spell seat right! he's hard to understand, but he can also be very funny at times.
This guy has a great sense of humor. He's very laid back. The tests are take home and the quizes are open book/note. He has an accent, but isnt too hard to understand.
Very easy. Take if you want an A.
The best math professor I have ever had.
Great teacher, very enthusiastic and good sense of humor. Take home test were alot of work. but helped grade!!
very easy material, I left halfway through most classes and still did well. explains things thouroghly but is a little confused sometimes. glad hes not an english prof cause he cant spell. has a hard time grading fairly and consistently amongst other students.
Sweetest teacher to ever teach ever. Made me laugh so hard every day!
he is a great professor. maybe the best at EMU.
Dr. Calin is a very good instructor and also very friendly. He makes sure to explain concepts thoroughly so that quizzes aren't so difficult. Students who say he is an easy teacher probably took the easy math classes, like 110. He has authored books on mathematics so I'm sure his advanced-level classes are challenging.
Very helpful and clear. Expains very well.
He is soooooo funny. You have to take this guy, he will crack jokes out of nowhere. He is very lienient with grading, tests have jokes on them and he gives take home tests and open note tests. You have to take him, sooooooo funny.
Very clear, helpful, funny and interesting!
Calin is a great teacher and he is really funny. I actually looked forward to going to class every week. All Math majors should take him at least once.
Maybe too easy
EASY! He's funny and very willing to help.
One of the best math profs at EMU. If you don't understand he will work with you until you do. He makes a tough subject fun and easier to learn. I would recommend this teacher to anyone.
He is such a nice guy! and can be really funny! YOU WILL LEARN a lot especially if it interests you, he is very thorough in everything that he explains! there are quizzes everyday, but they are only one problem. good class, you should get an A if you are any good at math, maybe even if you arent :)
Excellent professor! Very smart and extremely funny. There was a 5 point quiz every day (easy) and four tests (he drops the lowest grade). If you have trouble with math, take him. He is a very thorough teacher.
If you are not great at math, or haven't had it for a while and need 118. Take this professor. He teaches you exactly what to know and in a way that is easy to understand.
Very, very good professor. I never went to class and nearly got a perfect on the first three exams. And its not because im a genius, because im not. but its because he teaches really well and he makes sure you understand the material. Watch out for his final, its a harder than the rest, maybe because it was all proofs. def take him again
I took him in the spring. He's a genius and has an awesome accent. He is very easy to talk to and willing to help if you ask. Material was harder than I thought and we moved faster than I could learn most of the time but all in all he is a good teacher. He's really scary smart, take him if you can keep up! 1 test was super easy, 1 was super hard!
Great teacher. Tough class but if you go and take notes you will do fine on the test. One of the best math teachers i have ever had. Kinda funny also. played his harmonica for us.
Pretty good all around. Seems to be learning as he goes but overall a good professor. You won't have to work hard to earn a good grade.
Lightning fast. Gives thorough notes, but avoids the idiosyncrasies that students often get hung up on. Dumbs the material down. Note: you must furnish your own questions if you expect to learn.
he was as good teacher. gave quizzes just about every class... it was a little nerve wracking. he would test us on stuff he just taught us. he wasnt too hard though... watch out for the final. it was ridiciously hard!!! he must have curved it b/c i only answered 3 out of 10 questions and i still got an a lol
He pretended to be nice. No homework just quizzes and exams. But he 's very hard to understand. He often forgot what he taught tow days ago!
Sweetest man you ever met.Never raised his voice even when his voice was drowned out by other Prof. from neighboring rooms. He played his harmonica for the class to reduce stress levels before a test.
First, he is very funny! He always gives jokes, and one time he even brought a harmonica and sang to the class before the finals! I think he composed the song. Anyways, he is very direct with teaching, he explains the material well. He gives homework every day, but you don't have to turn it in. I suggest take him!
Fun teacher, made jokes. Gave a quiz every week and 3 tests. The tests were quite hard but they were take home and he was an easy grader. Little hard to understand with his accent but definitely worth taking.
Absolutely fantastic teacher. funny, tells jokes, explains things well in class and is very helpful. He even played a harmonica before our exam to make us feel comfortable. EVERYBODY SHOULD TAKE THIS TEACHER.
Very good teacher. Quizzes everyday but it's on the homework so it's basically a homework check. Gives practice exams prior to real exams to help you study. The real exams are harder though but definitely not that hard. He is very funny and you will laugh in his class.
The notes we took in class we not helpful in completing the homework, quizzes, or tests because the examples in class we a lot easier than what was assigned. I do not recommend this professor.
Great professor, as long as you don't have him for honors. He goes very in depth to proofs of theorems rather than teaching you how to do calculus. No homework, he does practice problems before each quiz, funny teacher and he's great at explaining stuff, as long as you have prior knowledge of materials you will need to prove the theorems.
Stochastic Calculus is a very useful class. His version of the class was all proofs. You will not know how to use Stochastic Calculus in your work. It will not help with the actuarial exams either. Take Stochastic Processes, you'll learn something useful and practical.
Love this professor! One of the best I have ever had at EMU. Knows his stuff and is always willing to help. He wants you to learn.
This class is simply an easy A. If you hate math and really don't want to learn a bunch of equations, this is the class for you. Excel is used the entire semester and the assignments are easy. No homework.
Required class, took it last because I'm horrible at math and I earned an A. Must have a knowledge of excel to do well, also a laptop is required. Did not use the textbook once. Homework consisted of coloring the spreadsheet and printed for next class. Take this prof!
Dr. Calin is a sweetheart and I cannot recommend him highly enough. I was studying for the LSAT while in his class and he would help me with logic questions during his office hours. I never did homework and still earned an A in the class by attending and taking notes on the problems we did in class.
He is a good professor. He does have an accent, so some might have trouble understanding him sometimes, but he's usually very clear. Funny and all around good professor.
This is the best teacher I've ever had. Calc 2 is a ridiculous class but he managed to make sure that we understood everything. He cares about his students and has a great sense of humor. I really hope I'm able to take him again.
I had him for calc 2 and was beyond ecstatic to take him again for diff eq. This is the best teacher I've ever had. He's made me realize that I actually love math more than my original major. If you have the opportunity to take him, do it. You won't regret it at all.
Dr. Calin is a great professor. He does a good job explaining difficult concepts in ways we can understand. 3 exams: A short first exam, The second exam covers chapter 2, which is over half of the book, and a cumulative final. I wish I would have had him for other classes before. I seriously recommend him for anything he's teaching.
Class started easy enough and first exam was very easy. Last two exams were exceptionally hard, so don't get lulled to sleep by the simplicity of the beginning. Gives quizzes every week. Very nice and approachable. Taking again next semester for Differential Equations. Good teacher and good person!
Professor Calin makes math really easy and he is not harsh at all on grading. he plays his harmonica in class sometimes if he's early. he does have a thin accent and he acts very strange sometimes
He's a really funny guy as you will find out throughout the semester. He can be hard to understand and talks very fast. If you ask him a question during class he may not answer it and tell you he does not have time, but if you go to his office he will help you out. He really does care about how well you do. I definitely would too, which is a plus
He is not a bad teacher, really passionate about the class. HOWEVER, he does not assign homework (seems great 'cause you don't need the book..). This means your grade in the class is dependent on 6 quizzes and 3 exams. These exams are extremely hard, so make sure you study up and do some practice. Going to his office hours helps hugely - seriously!
He is a good professor with an accent. You have a quiz in his class every Thursday and he grades harshly on it. Toward the end of the semester he shows videos of how to do the problems on the quiz. And he does that with the final too. I wish he did that that earlier in the semester it would have saved my grade. No homework though.
This class was way to hard for math 105. I'm good in math and this was just confusing, your grade is based off 3 exams and one project and that's it. Super frustrating when you get A's on all the exams and one C, and have to finish with a Low A/B.
This man knows his stuff but he has a bizarre way of going about things, in my opinion. He is like the embodiment of Sheldon Cooper, from the Big Bang Theory.
In this class you are graded on only three exams and a project. If you get a low score on one test, it will likely hit your grade hard. He overcomplicates things in his lectures, so I mostly taught myself or used methods I already knew. He is an alright professor, but if you have the chance to take it with someone else, do it.
Calin doesn't have any homework which makes it really chill, however, there is a quiz once a week which are simple. the only thing is, you are only graded on quizzes and 3 exams, and if you do bad on one, you're most likely not going to get an A. His lectures can also be very boring at times making you really not want to go to class.
One of the best professors I've ever had. He makes difficult concepts crystal clear. He clearly plans out his lectures well in advance and uses every minute of class time efficiently. He also has a great sense of humor. Take his class, you will love it.
Do not take this professor. He says in the syllabus and names some assignments extra credit, but he will NOT give extra points for extra credit. He ONLY gives up to 20 points on class activities and claims that there is no extra credit while simultaneously telling us he will give us extra credit for what we do that day. DO NOT TAKE!!!
Mr. Calin is one of the best professors that I have ever had. His class credits are out of 120%, so there is 20% extra credit already built in. He is more than willing to answer any questions. If you build a relationship with him and participate in class, he is more than willing to help you out with your grade and find ways that you can improve.
This is probably one of the worst experiences I've had in a classroom. Calin refused to give out extra credit he promised and completely ignored me when I had a question that would've helped me on our weekly quizzes. He is very rude and inconsiderate. He also makes SO many mistakes when he goes over problems, misleading many students.
Dr. Calin is a wonderful professor. I would absolutely take his classes again in the future. Lectures were easy to follow, and weekly quizzes were very straightforward, as they were based off of the class lectures. He makes class very interesting and genuinely cares about his students. His sense of humor makes the class very enjoyable. Recommended!
Ovidu Calin is a great man with a skill for panflute, but not for math. He is very passionate and kind, but he is an awful teacher. He makes many grammar mistakes as well as mistakes in math, and promises extra credit you will not receive. There is a quiz every weekend, however a majority of your grade is based on 3 exams and one project. Yikes.
Dr. Calin is great. He really takes you step by step through everything. He explains complex theory in class and then assigns coding homework for practical experience. Intimidating if you don't know Python. However, his coding examples were the same as the homework: just change a few parameters and you pass. He also has a hilariously sharp wit.
Very unclear, and conceded. Extremely rude and never answers the question you ask. When you try to ask a question (especially because we are in the middle of a pandemic) he will respond with a copy and pasted message from canvas, which started with "you didn't see my announcement", when I was asking questions about that exact message. AVOID
Exams were straight from the notes. The only downfall is He does make errors in his notes, so if you dont mention it to him then it wont get changed. Ive had a question on the exam that was similar to a example in the notes & I got it wrong due to him explaining it wrong.
Im not good at math, but his examples from his notes were the same concept on the exams. As long as your study the notes And memorized the examples , you will do good!
The class online was really easy. There is a quiz about every weekend, but he provides step by step instructions to solve each question. He also offers zoom tutoring classes for his students.
One quiz a week, 2 midterms, & final (all have 5 attempts). One project that he shows you how to do step by step. Write the quiz prep each week, its the same questions as the quiz. Hes not too difficult to understand. Hes very kind and genuinely tries to help you. No homework, all quizzes/test. Hes a great choice
Replys to emails fast. A quiz every week but you have 5 attempts just dont wait until the last minute
This professor was good especially for an online math class. He gave good lecture videos, and you just have to make sure to follow along and you will be able to pass the class/ quizzes. At the end of every week there is a quiz to take but the good thing is you get 5 attempts on it. In my opinion, if you struggle with math take it in person or sync.
He is very unclear in his lectures and it makes little to no sense. 1 quiz a week and 3 test but be careful with this teacher I did not have a good time with him
Dr. Calin is very accessible outside of the class via zoom, and sends out frequent reminders of office hours. He posted the lectures at the beginning of the week, and there was a weekly quiz that was available from Fri-Sun. Quizzes and exams were easy, short, and he provided lots of time to take them. Homework was not required.
I LOVED THIS GUY! I want to start off by saying I really don't like math, but he genuinely makes It so enjoyable. As long as you listen to lectures and watch his quiz prep videos, you'll pass for sure. No textbook is needed, so don't stress; everything you need is on Canvas. He is a super caring, goofy, laid back guy. I highly recommend him.
Professor Calin genuinely wants his students to succeed, and gives opportunities for extra credit, however the class is graded only on tests, quizzes, and one project, so if you have testing anxiety it can be stressful. He covers material very fast as well, but if you need help he's accessible, and makes helpful videos. He also plays instruments.
He is so kind and really cares about his students!
very helpful and makes things easy to understand also offers extra credit
Professor Calin is one of the nicest professors I’ve ever had. He cares about his students and wants them to succeed. He explains the material in a perfect amount of detail and makes sure everyone understands it. The grade is almost entirely off tests (typically closed notes), so make sure to study!
Great professor, guides you in the right direction, making the understanding of the subject easier
This was the worst experience I have ever had taking a math class. He constantly gets things wrong in his lectures, he never answers anyone's questions correctly, and he puts a bunch of new things on the quizzes that he has never brought up in class. The only things this class is graded on is the tests but even following his test prep videos fails.
He likes to try and involve students in his lectures. Class time just felt so pointless especially the lectures. He just goes over the same exact thing over and over, asks you to try and then walks around looking over your shoulder. Some things made absolutely no sense though, heavy EXCEL use. 1 quiz every week over lectures (or not who knows)
You are graded on tests only, and never gives homework. 2 midterms, 1 final, a QR project, then you have weekly quizzes every week but he literally posts himself going over the quiz, follow along and you'll pass. He makes little cartoons to try and help everyone understand super cute!
Prof Calin provides enough resources for you to succeed. He does lectures in-person and posts recordings online. Weekly quizzes and no homework. Teaching style became boring, snooze-worthy, and repetitive, because the same info shared in-person & online is the same. Regardless - many chances to retake quizzes and he's helpful, friendly, & funny.
Expected me to watch 4 lecture videos a week. Each video was THREE HOURS LONG. THREE HOURS. Save yourself the time it takes to switch classes and DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. Swapped it for an 8am cause at least I wont be spending the majority of my week watching these videos.
This professor doesn't know how to teach. I had to constantly email him questions regarding quizzes. He doesn't give examples of tough questions. He only grades you on weekly quizzes and he does not help you at all. I had to rely on a tutor (a former math teacher) who also agreed he makes no sense at all.
Amazing professor, he is very fast-paced but if you are comfortable with math and attend every class you will do fine
Love Mr Calin, I highly recommend you take differential equations with him, he is very fast-paced, but once you get used to that you will do fine. Take notes and do the hw, which isn't graded, you will be just fine. Graded on exams and in-class quizzes only, hw is there to only help us get a better understanding of the subject.
I feel like you have to actively try to fail, to fail his class. He makes it very easy to succeed (and this is coming from someone who rarely attends class).
Very generous with extra credit and the weight of quizzes. There's 13 quizzes, two midterms, one final, and a project. He is very straightforward with his expectations and is accessible outside of class.
Dr. Calin is amazing. His class is very hard, especially since I struggle in math (and it's test heavy with no HW), but if you're honest about your struggles he does everything in his power to help you. He has a great personality and often makes real world connections to the math he teaches. 10/10 recommend, super outstanding guy.
EMU has to be lucky to have a mathematician like Dr.Calin! He is a very passionate professor and very knowledgable of what he does. Dont read other people's comments about having previous difficulty in math or whatsoever. It is not his fault that people in the US are mostly very poor in math. He tries to teach you, but you should also put effort!
