This class was the hardest class I have ever taken I expected a regular normal calculus class, received the exact opposite the only math I actually did was the mastery exam (derivatives). Every homework assignment that i had was up to 30-50+ questions and each required a paragraph of explanation and conceptual work.
Easily the hardest class I've had to take so far. The homework was long, tedious, and full of abstract concepts. It seemed more like a math theory class than an actual calculus course. The textbook that is used is poorly made and very hard to understand. I do not recommend taking this course, you will have to devote many hours a week to it.
Hard test, only concepts. Too much abstract hand writing homework which is boring and difficult.
The class did not prepare me well for future calculus courses. He teaches so differently than a typical math class, which is very hard to get used to. The text book is online which is nice because you don't have you buy it.
Basically the entire class is done outside of the classroom. It is all online through the ALEKS system. He does not ever leave his chair and he speaks poorly of students sometimes when the whole class can hear. When someone needs help, he will hardly ever help, his TA's do everything for him. Overall, my worst classroom experience.
Very rude and talks down on students to his IA's. He is extremely unhelpful. Has a very very bad attitude and messes up grades every single time he puts them in.
Took College Algebra with this professor -- or his TA's I should say. The man himself doesn't do much but is there when you need him to pop a knowledge check. Is direct and straightforward in a good way, clear about what he wants. The entire class is done in ALEKS, with no lectures or teaching. Get ready for some bunkering down over the weekend.
He does not teach anything and all material must be taught by oneself. His TA's are there if you need any help, but some of them are extremely rude, talk down to students, and become easily exasperated when you do not understand the vague explanations they give. Don't take his class if you actually want lessons for each section.
This is a math class for math people. If math is not your strog point be prepared to work! Professor Davis, recognize hard work and effort. If you are willing to put in the work he is there to help you. I highly recommend taking this class if you enjoy math becuase professor Davis is clearly passionate about his subject.
Amazing professor. He offers tons of E.C., and for all I'm aware, most of the other prof's didn't offer as much or even as close of E.C. when compared to him. EASY A, but you need to work for it, and do the daily homework. Exam questions come heavily based on homework, so doing the homework equals success in this course with Prof. Davis.
Very strict on attendance for a teacher that doesnt teach or talk to students. This is an online class you teach yourself and get berated. Your TAs point out some stuff but dont expect to learn anything from him. Youre teaching yourself.
He gives you homework that he cant even solve himself. Hes demonstrated it a couple of times in class. Also, he doesnt teach you what you need to pass the homework and quizzes. He spends about thirty minutes teaching and the rest taking care of his administrative duties. Dont even bother reaching out to him for help, hell ignore you.
He is a nice prof, but if you struggle with math already then I do not recommend you to take the class. He gives a lot of homework and a lot of extra credit, but sometimes that is not even enough and he will ignore you if you struggle. He gives lectures as if you were the one with the math degree... if math is not your strength then don't take it.
He is mean and not understanding/caring, as well as not patient and doesn't care at all about students. Blames students for having problems and never handles problems, just tells us to get help through ASU. Doesn't really go through a lot in class, just says to go to office hours.
Really great teacher. If you're up to date with homework (a lot) you'll easily pass. If you're having legitimate problems and ask for help before the last second, he is very understanding. He doesn't listen to bullsh*t and bad excuses which is why some don't like him. However, stay up to date and he will be a great teacher who's happy to help.
Math 142 wasn't too hard of a class, and Professor Davis didn't make things much more difficult than they had to be, he just always had a bad attitude. He would routinely send out snide, condescending emails about due dates, and was never very helpful when I needed questions answered. The material isn't the problem, he is.
He does not answer any questions, is very passive aggressive and makes you feel dumb. assigns so much homework.
Many homework assignments, not too insanely hard tho. Does not like repeating himself when students do not understand his directions. Will say go to tech support as his answer to any question asked. Passive aggressive, doesnt respond to emails.
Prof Owens wasn't a terrible teacher, but he 100% makes you feel bad about yourself even if you're doing everything right. Very passive-aggressive with no tolerance. For those of us that suck at math, some occasional encouragement would be nice. TAs are the saving grace of this class and mine was wonderful, they are a great resource so USE THEM.
With COVID-19 I have given teachers the benefit of the doubt when it came to switching online. This professor gives at least 7-9 homework assignments per week. His lectures dont clearly pertain to the homework so you are forced to seek outside help. It is clear he doesnt like to repeat himself & he will make snarky comments if he does have to.
This class was easier for me because I can teach myself, I'm not the best at math but he provides a lot of material for you to figure it out. The tests are simple if you complete the exam review. He is very precise about what he expects and doesn't really go out of his way. I would recommend staying on top of your assignments and don't fall behind.
Davis is very precise about how he wants you to do things. There are HOURS of homework each week, but he does offer late passes. Don't wait until the last minute to do all the homework, or you'll be scrambling. He seems annoyed sometimes when asked for help and makes comments that make you feel like an inconvenience to him. Stressful, but doable.
This professor does give lot of homework but he cares about the students. Hes really a gem of a professor who help you out if youre clear and honest with him. I would hundred percent recommend this professor unless youre lazy.
Professor Davis was by far my worst teacher/professor I have ever come across. This class was very unpleasant because of the attitude the teacher has towards his students. At least for my class, we all seemed to have major issues with this professor, as he was very unhelpful when it came to answering questions as it wasted his time.
The worst class I have ever taken. I was quite literally begging for help and he basically refused. 65% of the final grade is based off 4 exams, even though you spend HOURS on lessons every week. 0/10 would recommend.
Offers 3 tests worth 45 percent of your grade with the final being 20%. Makes you do 12+ hours of homework a week for it to not even show up on the tests.
prt2 of my rant, the lectures don't help at all like nobody even goes but he counts participation points for talking about his dog half of the time and the tests are are difficult and proctored. The ONLY decent thing are the latepasses and extra credit. Oh and before I forget his tutoring hours suck I learned more from random professors than him.
Professor Davis assigns a truly overbearing amount of work. The work outside of class is split between lessons and homework, and it is repetitive to the point that it doesnt help learn material. He also is very snarky and rude if you ask him just about anything, very condescending tone and just overall is not very nice. Choose another professor.
RUN as fast as you can away from this professor. You will spend numerous hours on homework that is repetitive and doesnt help on the test. The system/hw site that is used also has nothing to do with the lectures either. The class is all over the place.
The Rational Reasoning Platform used by this teacher would never be used by an educator interested in the well-being of students.
Honestly he is a great teacher. He is very homework heavy but its really not that diffrent from highschool math. The test questions are also pretty much taken directly from the homework. Its a self-paced class and he provides opportunities to finish the class early. Great dude, just don't be lazy, its not that hard
Professor Davis is a great and kind teacher, but the ALEKS platform you use during this class takes some getting used to. Yes theres a lot of homework, but if you manage your time efficiently youll pass, as the class material overall isnt that hard. The low ratings arent because of him, its because the ALEKS platform isnt the best.
If you can take someone else then do it. He gave SOO MUCH homework, it was ridiculous. He did give out late passes for hw and the tests weren't that bad but the work load is enough to stress you out, especially with other classes. He was at times hard to reach, if you have to take him you'll be fine but if you can avoid then avoid him for sure.
I will start by saying I am very bad at math. I hated the ALEKS program he uses as much as anyone but overall professor Davis is incredible. He is a fun guy to talk to and if you put in work he will give you extra credit for nothing. I was barely failing the class and because he liked my work ethic he passed me by giving extra credit.
Uses attendance points but the class is all online and pretty much self paced. A lot of math topics to master with not enough time but that's not necessarily his fault. There were no lessons taught but TA's did alright at trying to help.
The class is basically teaching yourself. If you go to class you will never know if he gonna be nice or rude in class. Don't get on his bad side.
This class wasn't horrible but I didn't enjoy it. You have to be on top of your work otherwise class becomes a lot. I recommend doing your work and try not to piss him off.
Take this class only if you're willing/able to learn a lot of topics on your own. Mr. Davis and the TA's are always willing to help, and he is very accommodating and gives extra credit here and there, but the ALEKS program the class uses is terrible and I would not recommend it. This class just includes a ton of work.
A breath of fresh air compared to my other math professors. The curriculum is easy if you remember anything from high school, but there is a lot of it. Almost the entire class is self-paced with the exception of a few assignments. He was very understanding and caring in regards to a situation I had communicated with him about. Great instructor!
Class was based on ALEKS, so Davis wasn't too involved with the teaching itself. Although, he did give a lot to be graded on so if you received perfect attendance, that was a slight easy grade booster. As long as you show up and complete all the ALEKS tasks, you'll pass, considering thats what I did despite failing all exams including the final.
I think Davis is a nice guy personally. However, he does not really make an effort to teach the class or help. Most of the time it is his TAs who will walk around if you have questions. You will be responsible for teaching yourself the material. This class is also purely based on Aleks. You wont pass if you dont actually work through topics.
Don't trust the other reviews. He is a great professor and is willing to help. He explains the questions in a way that you can understand. The class is taught online by ALEKS so he doesn't really teach its mostly by yourself. He was great, but make sure you take the time to learn the material.
Wonderful prof. Spent the whole session (B) engaged. ALWAYS willing to help. It is heavily self lead, which is great for independent learners. You receive the help you ask for! He has never been rude/sarcastic. A/B summer sessions are ROUGH but through no fault of Prof Davis. Take C session if you can to reduce weekly workload.
Summer session online. Math is not my strength and ALEKS is basically teach-yourself. I spent 25-35 hours a week on this course and hired a private tutor and I still barely passed. Extremely difficult.
Nice professor, very strict on attendance but otherwise helpful in and out of class. IAs will help out too. The way aleks is structured sucked but it was doable and easy. Finishing weekly topic goals was a breeze. You could get the course done in under a month if you wanted to try.
Willing to alter my ALEKS weekly requirement so I could focus on fully understanding unknown content. I think there were 4 tests, the last one was cumulative. Overall I didn't have any issues. He also sent out daily announcements with words of encouragements, and exam reminders.
If you want to waste your money on a math class then you found the perfect one. This class is completely taught by you. It is 150+ students, an online course, and there are teaching assistants who walk around but don't actually make an effort to ask you if you need help. Owen Davis sits at his desk the whole class and complains and doesn't teach.
Davis is an awful professor who does not care about his students. Attendance is required but showing up useless. You teach yourself the entire content of the course and somehow Davis inhibits your ability to pass instead of helping. Horrible communication and he just complains in class. MAT117 is easy but avoid this professor at all costs.
Mr. Davis is a terrible teacher and does not communicate with the students at all as far as learning. All he does is send out assignments and never teaches other than showing how much he likes to complain. There is no help from him either, he truly does not care about the students at all. I missed oneday andhe dropped mygrade by10%. DO NOT take him
Professor Davis runs this course through the ALEKS program which is very hit-or-miss for some. I particularly do not mind it because it allows me to work at my own pace. Even though it is mainly through ALEKS, Davis and many TA's are available during the class period and out for any questions you may have which is extremely helpful.
by FAR, worst professor. freshman in MAT187, if I could do anything different in my life, it would be taking this class with ANY other professor. not only is he unbelievably passive-aggressive, but if you ask ANY question, you will be shunned. he will send you to the syllabus. I stay up at night. I fail my FIRST exam. I'm FED UP, I WILL fail.
Davis is a good professor. MAT 117 for ALL classes is done through Aleks. He sends out reminders, videos going over problems and does partial credit for each exam and he is very lenient with it. If you are struggling or have questions literally just ask him or the IA's or go to his office hours and they are ALWAYS willing to help!
Mr. Davis teaches a class that is extremely self taught. He often comes off as rude or arrogant towards us and it feels unwelcoming to speak with him. However, he does offer "partial credit" which are basically test corrections which are very helpful.
I know ALEKS is an online classroom-esque website, but I would've preferred if the professor engaged more with the students instead of sitting by his chair for the whole class and moaning about silly issues here and there. Would not recommend.
Davis was an amazing professor and you can tell he actually cares about his students doing well! He always posts videos explaining material and clearly tells us what is due and coming up. The course was mainly self taught through ALEKS but he structured the class in the best way to make students motivated and do well!
His notes were very helpful and always made the homework a lot more understandable. He explained trig in a way that I understood pretty easily. Also it helps to look at the notes and do the homework before class, otherwise you might not get enough time in class to truly understand the math if it is not your sixth sense.
I don't think that the professor is difficult I think that ALEKS is just annoying. If you don't stay on top of your topics every week you will struggle so I recommend getting a head start on your topics early in the semester if you have extra time because you really want to take advantage of extra time to study for tests.
This was an easy class, but beware that this is mainly self taught through the ALEKS website. If you work hard enough this class can be finished early. The professor is caring and pushes his students to get good grades even though he seems harsh sometimes. When and If you ask for help he will makes videos explaining how to solve the problems.
the course was through ALEC which I won't lie it was a lot. The professor though really tried his best for everyone to succeed. he had a lot of helpful hands to go over the materials. He let us do partial credits on the test which really helped getting points back. The homework load is a lot but if you're consistent with it then its pretty easy.
He always tried to help those struggling by making time for questions regarding homework and upcoming tests. He even would host small sessions to review for upcoming exams. There was always at least one homework assignment due per week. Exams could make or break your grade. He is a good professor but does have a quick temper.
If you're a freshman don't take his MAT117 class. He isn't helpful at all and just makes you show up to do work (In a self-paced course). He's super hard on attendance and really doesn't help. DON'T TAKE
awful
This class was fairly difficult, The homework load was a lot but if you stayed on top of everything you will be just fine. Sometimes he does seem misplaced or all over the place but if you talk to him one on one, he will do everything he possibly can to help. You email and he responds within the hour. You have to take initiative and ask for help.
This is an online class with mandatory in-person attendance. He kept complaining to us about how hard the class is. He did allow half credit to me made up for missed problems on exams, which really helped my grade. The class is all done through ALEKS. The IA aides weren't very helpful and got a lot of work incorrect.
Sign up for his class if you want to teach yourself this course. All he does is homework in class. Honestly I learned the entire course from youtube videos. Although if you reach out to him via mail, he responds quickly
Honestly, Prof. Davis is a good professor, but you must use outside resources to learn the material too. I liked that he explained some stuff in a simple way. There is lots of homework, you should get ready for that. Recitations too. Overall, not bad. I would take this class again, so I hope that explains everything.
MAT 117 sucks because it is all online but Professor Davis is a really amazing professor. He goes out of his way to make full video explanations for any problems you need help with, allows you to finish the class early, cares about his students, and is easy to get in contact/meet with. All he asks for is students to have discipline.
The actual course is incredibly difficult. Its calculus with analytical geometry so it is more concept oriented. The professor acknowledges this and gives extra help out the ears. He gives out videos to explain homework problems or any concepts that you are having trouble with and is very good at responding to emails. You just need to actually ask.
Overall a super caring, but blunt professor. It's very clear that he is truly passionate about calculus, but more importantly, teaching it to you. Offers plenty of help if you reach out for it. Buy the book. Read it before attending the lectures. Stay ahead on homework. Get more practice outside the homework, and you should be in good hands.
Mr. Owen's as a professor is super understanding, passionate, and replies quickly. He gave half credit for corrected work and makes video's explaining concepts you don't understand. But, he use's Aleks which is pretty much a self taught online program. Not very helpful if you learn slowly. It's very fast paced, with lots of homework. Good luck! :(
Mr Davis. has no extra credit opportunities. Does not drop any tests or quizzes. Does not accept any late work regardless of circumstance. Very inconsiderate and unapproachable. I would not recommend him at all. Literally, take anybody else. Recitation is a huge part of your grade and remakes are never an option. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Love Prof Davis! ALEKS is very independent-learning. His classes are suitable for people who have a natural ability with math. If you need your hand held, he is not the professor for you. However, when you do need help - he is fantastic at making thorough videos. This is my second course with him and I'd take more given the opportunity. Easy A.
Davis makes things up and he lies that he will teach us but he didn't all he do is sending videos on announcements in Canvas. We as students get paid for College not like we are in Starbucks. DO NOT CHOSE DAVIS AS YOUR PROFESSOR ANY OF HIS MATH CLASSES! Take some of your math classes at Community College while you take your classes at ASU.
So I saw a lot of reviews here about Aleks, that is correct, BUT that is not the professors fault - it is the course itself that horribly sucked. The teacher helps you a lot though. The class is VERY accelerated. If this class is a requirement, you will have to push through, but I recommend Professor Davis to help you along the way.
The best part about Professor Davis is you can email him homework specific questions. He takes these and then does 25 to 30 minute videos going over in depth strategies to do these homework problems. The tests are very similar to homework so if you ask for help and review his videos you'll do fine.
Davis Is by nature a busy person. If you can handle yourself and show him that you respect his time and efforts, he will reward you in the form of videos and answering questions. He don't F*ck around but for me that was a breath of fresh air. If you want someone that will treat you like an adult and teach you how to think about math chose Davis.
I have Davis for 265, and if you put in the work and actually make an effort to do well in class, you should be fine. He also makes videos for any homework problems you don't understand. People who do badly in his class typically do not show up and finish the homework at the last minute, but if you don't procrastinate and study, you will be fine.
Gives partial credit on missed exam questions. Uses an online website for coursework (ALEKS). Provides videos for topics you don't understand. As long as you do the work on time and show up for class, you should be able to pass no problem.
(MAT 265) He HIGHLY overcomplicates the material and wastes half the lecture giving definitions you won't use. The lectures wouldn't cover half the homework as well and he rushes through the few examples he ever gives. it's better learning the material off YouTube. He is also strict and won't tolerate BS. tests are 80% of your grade.
EMAIL HIM. He will respond and send out videos explains everything to look at on your own time. He firmly believes that you get out what you put in, but if you put in effort you will be really successful, he cares about his students and wants you to do well. He also tells you what types of problems will be on exams which was super helpful.
He is a very fair professor. He works hard to make a lot of videos about homework. As long as you ask him a question, you will get a detailed and complete answer. His courses are great if you want to learn seriously, math is a rigorous course and what matters is what you learn, not loose grade standards.
This is an online course and as long as you finish the topic goal and do the review quizzes several times you'll sure get 100 in your exams. does not require much time to finish your work even if you are not good at math
Professor is good; I liked almost everything. The only thing I found to be kind of disturbing is that he is repetitive. He often repeats main theme of lecture , thus letting small details be forgotten. He also makes lots of videos and gives you nice partial credit on exams if you, let's say, got solution correct but final answer wrong.
From what I had experienced in this class it was one of the most difficult content wise, but Davis basically broke it down for a better understanding. He uses analogies so you can better understand and for me they helped. He blunt, straightforward, and does everything by the book. You can also request videos problems for problems which helps a lot.
if you take his 8 am make sure you are going to actually attend because when the attendance of the class room goes down he starts to not respond to emails
If you are willing to work on math everyday and attend lectures you will pass this class. Professor Davis makes videos for exam study guides which will help you on exams and has office hours. Majority of these bad reviews are just lazy students who want to be given an A with no work involved to be honest.
He assigns a TON of homework that gets overwhelming, especially if you have other hard classes. His attitude/temper isn't what you'd expect from a college professor but a high scool teacher. He makes videos about the homework that are semi-helpful. Don't skip lecture if you wanna pass. He is nitpicky about being on your device(s) during lecture too
This is by far the worst professor or teacher I have ever had in my life. AT first he came off as like a cool nice professor BUT I WAS VERY WRONG. He made me rethink my whole career and coming to college in the first place.
Professor Davis's way of teaching is without a doubt unique and different. He likes to use analogies to other outside math concepts to help students better connect and understand the content. On exams, he is very generous with partial credit on the written questions. In some lectures I was clueless, but asking him questions helped a lot.
The online course is structured into 7 quizzes (30%), 2 practice exams (10%) and two exams (30% each) and everything but the exams have unlimited attempts. Prof. is very accessible outside of class and regularly posts videos to help students. Overall, if you are willing to work, Professor Davis is a great choice for Brief Calculus!
A lot of people complain about homework, but one thing Mr. Davis made clear was that ALL ASU professors for this course follow a specific curriculum made by ASU. I recommend Davis if you are not good with math. He singlehandedly helped me learn more math in 1 year than I did all of high school. Put in the work and you simply cannot fail his class.
I normally have a hard time paying attention in lectures but Davis's were super straightforward and helpful. Attendance isn't required but if you go before quizzes/tests he tells you what to study. He makes videos for every kind of math problem and explains how to solve them thoroughly. I would 100% take him again and highly recommend him.
Mat 170 at ASU has always had lots of homework and is quite difficult if you fall behind. That being said this professor has a short temper and gets upset at very minor things. It's like watching a toddler throw a tantrum but it's every lecture since school started. Honestly you don't need a professor to go over this material unless you're dumb.
Teaches horribly
Don't rely on actually getting taught anything, if you want a good grade I'd recommend watching youtube videos on the topic. Towards the end, I stopped going cause my time there was pointless, much more useful to use that time on learning the topic outside of class.
Prof. Davis is pretty good, his method of in-depth explanation of each topic, good comparisons to relate it to stem related things and comparisons in general to help the student understand the subject is helpful. Small issue you might find is the homework length, the questions are repetitive and can be very tiresome if done last minute.
Very well spoken, go to class and read the book, overall easy class
Great professor overall. Explains concepts well and makes videos on homework problems when requested. He is always willing to help you assuming you do the work. Also curves exams sometimes. Do the homework and read the textbook and you'll be fine.
he was good
My review is pretty fair here. He was good about answering emails and posting videos. That said, the trigonometry part was too crammed. I feel students need to be told to start studying the trig at the beginning of the course along with algebra. He wasn't a bad professor. I just disagree with the trig setup. Too much in three weeks.
Great professor, he gave extra credit from Edfinity, as well as clear grading on exams and good lectures.
Very nice and super helpful. He responds to emails and questions on problems very quickly and is good at explaining things (my personal opinion, some would disagree). If you actually go to class and ask questions when needed you should have no problem doing well in his courses.
Professor Davis is wonderful. If you actually go to class and try, he'll be on your side and help you with whatever you need. He genuinely wants you to understand the material. He is very thorough in his lectures. HW is pretty standard, there's EC, tests are fair (usually q's you've seen before). He makes difficult math as manageable as it can be.
As someone who struggles with math, I can confidently say that Professor Davis is an outstanding instructor. I took his MAT170 class last fall, and each lecture was a great experience. He truly knows the material and how to teach it. I highly recommend him for MAT170 or any other math course he teaches.
I wouldn't recommend taking this professor. You basically have to teach everything to yourself. In class, he barely goes over necessary/important information & instead overcomplicates topics & moves at such a slow, BORING pace. He gets flustered very easily, too, & has a strict no phone policy. There's better professors to choose from instead!
IF YOU WANT TO ACTUALLY LEARN DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS!!! The only reason I got an A is because turning in your work on exams raises your scores and because I was at the online tutors 2-3 times a week. Only things graded were homework and exams.
This was the WORST professor I've ever had. He barely explained anything and seemed to not care whether students passed or failed. He even told the class that if we were struggling, we should drop our major because we "weren't going to make it." When in reality the real issue was his lack of explanation, not our ability.
I took MAT 170 in fall 2024. He is on your side as long as you go to class and do the work. No extra credit offered. He drops your lowest exam score with your final. I would do the lessons before going to class so that his lecture makes more sense. It was very easy to get ahead. Only complaint is the lack of resources from him if you miss class.
He is my Hero Baymax
Prof. Davis's grading criteria are straightforward, I think Davis is understanding, helpful and relatable to students, and cares about the well being and success of students regardless of their grades. He can drop your grade in an exam, but if you learn to put in effort, turn your work on time and read the book ahead, it should be an easy class.
The worst math teacher. You will attend his lectures only for him not to teach anything of substance. on an example that has parts a-i he will only go over part b. You have to teach yourself. Also I asked him a question after class and he told me to drop out or switch majors because if asked that question I wont pass.
This is the WORST PROFESSOR EVER! DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS! His class lectures don't help whatsoever, he doesn't teach anything, be prepared to teach yourself everything. He is rude, will laugh at you if get a question wrong and tell you you're not smart enough to be in college and should drop out. He rolls his eyes if you ask a question.
Math as is it is a scary subject and his class was a cherry on top of it. The exam dates were never updated on canvas/exam portal. Quiz were at random and not at all satisfactory class.
I have taken a precalc class before and most of this is relearning for me (top of my class for precalc). The site that you use to do most of your homework/lessons over explains the simplest of problems. On top of that, this professor's lectures actually do not help with your learning at all. I come into class to take notes and get more confused.
This has to be the worst math professor at ASU, I took his class, he doesn't teach anything in the lecture, he like barely even goes over the material, and then brags about he nurses don't take math 170 anymore because it was too hard. THIS GUY ENJOYS FAILING PEOPLE.
Many people failed his class when I took his class including myself. It is very difficult to pass his class, the tests are rigorous and all free response. He does not seem to care about students' success. If you are learning calculus for the first time do not take this professor, tests are significantly more difficult than what he covers in lecture
Took his class in 2022. Writing this 3 years later to warn future students: DO NOT take him. He ignored my request to round 69.84 to 70 and replied with poetry instead. That 0.16% wrecked my track affecting to this day! Cold, unempathetic, and detached from student reality. Absolute nightmare of a professor! TA was equally bad and inconsiderate.
Honestly a lot of people over hate this professor. While he wasn't friendly he explained clearly all his grading policies and the weighting for assignments and tests at the beginning of the semester. He also explained that the grade being so test heavy wasn't even in his control. At the end of the day if you pay attention you will be fine.
If you attend class, pay attention, & study like you're supposed to, you'll succeed in this class. He grades fairly, so you get the grade you EARN. He was willing to help when I asked & is not as unfriendly as others have said. Lots of homework & grades are test-heavy, but that's not in his control. I'm taking one of his classes next semester.
Good professor, despite some people's complaints, they are there to ensure you learn and know the basics. So even if you felt you may not have understood the 'why' behind trigonometry, geometry, and algebra, it finally comes together again. Keep in mind math tends to expose learning disorders, but the effort when you push through and win is worth.
RUN !! RUN AWAY, FLY AWAY IF YOU CAN ! This dude gave out so much homework, its almost impossible to try to complete it all with the stress and workload of other classes! Like I said RUN, FLY, JUST GET AWAY !!
He is very strict.
Owen Davis is one of the few online professors who cares about his students. If you have a question on a homework problem, he will make a video explaining everything and post it for the class. Sometimes, the videos would be 20-30 minutes long because he tries to explain everything. This specifically helped me pass the class, which was pretty hard.
Don't ask him questions because he is very unfriendly. Any question I have seen anyone ask him, he has either acted like they were stupid for asking, or said he doesn't have time to go over that. He is a fine professor to have if you are good at math and don't plan on interacting with him directly, but otherwise, I would not recommend him.
I am BAD at calculus, have always hated it. Prof. Davis helped make the concepts more digestible and often references pop culture and ways that he has applied calculus to his life to get better at it. We chatted about exponentials in media + movies, and I started to put more effort into the class. Med-High workload, lots of support outside class :D
The course is standardized for online students; thus, the teachers' rules are always minimal. However, whenever a question was asked, the teacher took the time to explain and even recorded how to solve it. While helpful, math requires conceptual understanding, not just memorizing how to solve a problem, which was not provided consistently.
Go to class. Or don't. You'll be confused either way. If you don't go, you don't know the specific questions you'll get asked on the exams. If you DO go, Davis will confuse you even more, but at least you know what's gonna be on the test. I got a C+ because I couldn't be bothered, but I think if you truly apply yourself you can get an A/A- easily.
Davis expects students to not have their phones out, but it may offend some. He is very kind and caring if you take the time to ask questions. He tends to focus on the basics in lectures to make sure you understand what to do but also goes into the why of some concepts which is really interesting if you like math.
I took this class the summer of 24' during a summer program. I am not sure why I am seeing so many negative reviews about Professor Davis. He was a very respectful professor and answered everyone's questions thoroughly. This class was difficult for me since I was never good at mathematics, but his TA's had tutoring sessions.
He is very by the textbook. He is very not always conceptual and expects you to figure out how things relate. He is very kind and understanding if you have questions. Email him if you need help. He will give you an in-depth video. He grades tests very fairly and will give you credit for attempting a problem. Extra credit is only 5% on homework.
He's a great professor and wants you to learn. He grades pretty nicely.
The textbook is required and there is a LOT of homework. You're given a study guide that is very representative of the test and there is an extra question on each test for EC + there is a redemption grade possibility for the final. Despite the other comments, he is super nice and helpful, and with time and effort the course is not too difficult!
The class was very boring and monotonous. Quizzes can be taken at any random day. There are many other better professors who actually care about their students. He is very unfriendly. DO NOT take this class.
DO NOT take this professor. He is very rude and unfriendly and wont ever answer or bother about your concerns.
