He is very pompus and smug, and wants everyone to fail....
Rude, and speaks as if he is a legend, but no dice.
I only went to 2 lectures the whole semester, that is how bad he is. The first day I was there, the class was pretty full. The second lecture I attended, there was about 10 people there...one word...BORING!!!
Owen Davis is the man. The class he teaches is for people who need a math refresher or for people who suck at math. About half the class fails because they suck at math, not because he's a bad teacher.
too fast, too hard, no explination, boring, make it interesting and eye catching students will appreciate it

extremely boring. but i went to class 3 times and got an a so i cant complain
I thought he was a great guy. He has a bad temper if you rub him the wrong way, though. His lectures made sense but when I got to the exam it didn't make sense. There is something wrong when the average is in the 50s. Thankyou for the curve!!
I'm sorry to burst everyone's bubble, but Davis was a cool guy. His explanations are very easy to understand, but if you don't go to class, you'll fail the tests. Never fear, there's a killer curve. If you don't get an A, you suck at math.
Decent teacher, moves too fast, makes a lot of hokey jokes/comments. Can tell he's smart, just doesn't present information terribly well.
Why must everyone refer to him as 'owen davis' and not 'owen' or 'mr. davis'...his incessant e-mail flood my mail box, he needs to stop making Alg/trig look like 4th semester calculus or worse.
I HATE OWEN DAVIS!!
A teacher that will explain eveything if you go to each class. He moves fast because there is alot for him to cover. Attend the classes and take notes and even the worst student will do fine. If you can't follow him because you don't attend class, that's your fault not his.

He is a good guy. Just go to class, do the online homework, and stop complaining. He is alittle dry, however, is job is to teach not make us laugh
he was funny, though his funniness was lost in a big lecture hall... i understood everything when i was going to class.
he's one of those teachers that knows the material but doesn't know how to explain it. he expects u to know everything before he explains it, never answered my Q's or e-mails until its to late especially for the online HW, n the online HW is a stupid idea, go n take 153 n get an A in it n go to 223
I really liked the class. Owen is a good prof, and people who complain are the ones who skip out over and over. Go to lecture, so many exam problems are done on overhead it really pays off.
OWen teach Math during the summer, he is a funny guys but sometime I don't get his joke. HOwever, his exam is much harder than I Thought, all of the problem were not came from the homework material. I fail some of the exam, but he does explained thing well.
He is a terrible professor, his exam never come from the lecture. He enjoying make people suffer, I don't like his attitude.

Owen can not teach worth a damn i had to start going to a different lecture so i could understand what he was trying to say. he needs to give up his day job and maybe try to bring back his awesome style of clothing
This guy is freakin crazy!
Good teacher. He has corny humor, but make sure you keep up lecture attendance. It pays off.
He has his kids to read to!!!!
WTF?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

OWEN DAVIS ROCKS
kinda weird but go to lecture
Good teacher, jokes funny but in a not in a student - teacher way. very helpful just go to class and do his review problems and you will easily get an A
the dude abides
didnt like him
Best math instructor i've ever had
This guy is ridiculous
One of the worst professors i have ever met. He needs to have someone who actually understands how to interact with humans set up his lectures.
Good teacher as long as you go to lecture you'll be fine. If you fail you skipped lectures or you are just horrible at math. Either way not Davis' fault. Kinda strange sense of humor but you get used to it.
Excellent Professor. He emailed the class every night with homework hints and such. He's a nice guy once you get to know him, funny and everything.
He's not a bad teacher, but if you don't go to lecture, or do the online hw, dont expect to do well. his exams are hard.
The online homework made me want to light whoever created iLrn on fire. Owen Davis was a pretty decent professor. I actually originally has another lecturer, but that was at 7:30 AM... so that didn't happen.
BE READY TO work! Show up to all lectures, spend time on online HW and I mean lots of time. If you do this you will get a good grade, but expect to put forth a ton of effort. Several hours each night doing HW. After all it is a 5 credit hr class a week. Tests are pretty tough, but if you take the time on HW to do well you should be fine
Great professor in lecture but pretty useless if you try to go for help just go to a TA and don't waste your time. Oh, and DONT TALK DURING LECTURE. If any of you happened to b in the class where he blamed 2 kids as "whats wrong with this world" that was me. To be honest he is a good teacher as much as we seem to hate each other I respect him.
Too much homework
hard! do the homework!!
Very good teacher! Explains the material very well
juat a lot of HW...
when I think of a college professor he fits the bill
very good teacher. the course is alot to handle, but just go to class and do the homework and you will be fine. he is very fair about all of the exam grades and your final grade.
Really understands the material and tries to help you understand it. Tests come mostly from the concepts covered in the homework.
great teacher, explains well. the only thing is the tests are hard and the homework takes FOREVER.
He cares about his students but only those who make the effort to find him after class or during office hours. This is not an easy course there is online homework due almost everyday of the week and on top of that quizzes every tuesday and thursday. Be ready for a lot of work and having math be part of your everyday schedule.
Professor Davis really wants his students to learn and succeed. He is very helpful and you will learn a lot from him. It's a 5 credit hour class so expect a lot of work. His exams are relatively difficult. If you are not motivated to spend a lot of time on homework almost everyday, do not take this class.
He can be an ass. I did all the home work, went to lecture. Did everthing except study it for 6 hours a day. I spent about 2 hours a night on home work I think. This class is awful and I hate it. I had an A in precal in high school, so I was expecting to be ok, like a B. Nope. BTW this has one of the highest failed classes at Purdue.
I loved this class. It was hard and sometimes frustrating, but in the end he was the best math prof I have ever had. I really understood precal and trig after this course.
Best math teacher I have had so far but this class is extremely hard. If you're not ready to work hard then I highly recommend not taking this class. TON of homework, be prepared to do homework for 2-3 hours a night. Quizzes every Tuesday/Thursday. Tests are tough, but his curve is generous so as long as you do the homework/study you'll be fine. GL
Helpful teacher. Very devoted to teaching.
Professor Davis is the most helpful professor this semester. He really wants you to learn and do well, but the class is extremely challenging. Go into the class ready to work hard. I don't care how much math you've had in High School, this class will take over your life and suck up all your time, but he is always approachable and very helpful.
Very helpful and provided lots of resources to succeed, its just up to the student if they wish to pursue them. However, he is sort of creepy and I have witnessed him hit on freshman girls before and invade personal space.
Out of all of my professors this semester, Mr. Davis is the professor this that has showed the most passion for his students success. He is always open to students coming in for help and will continue to work with you until you are comfortable with the material.
Best professor ever
A very helpful teacher. It really shows that he truly understands the subject and is passionate about it. The lectures are fast-paced but the explanations are very clear. I really enjoyed this class.
Good instructor, clear and comprehensible. Exams were fair and workable. Everything else was pretty standard. Though he is a bit of a stickler about some things that may seem silly.
Sends thousands of weekly emails each of time atleast 7 paragraphs long with QUOTES! Has alot of time of his hands to not answer questions or respond to ANY emails. Exams ARE APPLIED knowledge from class, so it doesn't even matter if you learned it or not. Grading Scale is absolutely ridiculous. AVOID OWEN DAVIS!!!!!
Owen is a good instructor, not the best one, but still pretty good. It's true that his emails can be pretty long, but I felt it was good he kept us apprised of the ongoings with the class. Fair exams but the "A" grade seems ever so elusive.
His exams are not fair. Pretty much everything in the book is "fair game" even if not discussed in class.
Both his 223 and 224 were awful. He designs the most bizarre test questions. You will receive on average 4 Emails from him a week, none of which have a real point. The online homework site fails often, and I cannot stress enough that the tests are difficlt , and the curves are small. Best to Try and test out of this class to avoid the frustration.
The material of this class is not hard. But Mr Owen Davis' exams are the worst. They ridiculously hard, random and have almost nothing to do with what you've learnt. Preparing for exams are almost pointless. Its quite unfortunate.
This class was challenging for me to start, but after doing well in my separate class section and on homework, it was the exams that caused my D. They are built to make you learn how to do different things you have never before done, rather than testing what you know (the way tests should be).
He is a fairly good teacher. Tests are very difficult but if you put the time in, then they are fair. Some examples in class are somewhat unclear but he is always helpful in office hours, so make sure to us them. He's also a really nice guy.
There are a variety of ways to get help, which is nice. The in class lectures/quizzes never prepare you for the test. The tests are insanely hard. Anything in the book can be used, so unless you read it cover to cover you are bound to be confused. Also, be prepared to get a million pointless emails with inspirational quotes.
Academic Hazing. Exams were not a test of the course material, instead applying critical thinking skills that were not even mentioned in class. They weren't exams, but just intelligence tests. No grade estimates were ever given, and all emails stressed the need for "Hope" in passing the class. Hope should not be a factor of my Math grade.
Absolutely the worst instructorcourse coordinator I have every dealt with. Honestly I don't understand how he hasn't been fired yet. Yes, calc 2 is a difficult subject, and you need to put in the hours to pass. But when 80% of students fail your exam, something is wrong, and its your teaching.
His calc 2 class has literally set student up to fail
He is a smart guy, but kind of arrogant which means he assume all of his students are genius. The exam is hard, the homework will make you mad. Also took his MATH 159, horrible experience!
If you're above the curve and do well on quizzes on homework you'll be fine. He's pretty helpful if you email him. But expect a couple of lengthly emails a week from him with annoying quotes on the end about fighting the good fight. The second test had an average of 50% so you have to work for your grade. There are several ways to get help.
Owen Davis may be a smart fellow, but the system he is using for his course is not. Any little error and you're out of luck. He also is extremely rude to students. I met with him for help understanding how his strange grading scale works, and he answered his phone while I was still talking to him and forced me to leave. Avoid at all cost!
Terrible! They way he operates MA16020 is not good. Lon-Capa tests are terrible and he wants you to save your math grade by praying.
Despite using a tutor, studying, and doing the practice problems, I did very poorly on the first exam. When I asked him what I should do to improve in the class, he simply told me to "try harder". Oh, and expect several emails a day from him, even after you finish the course.
Tests were very difficult, but he was very helpful.
Awful class, take at ivy tech if you can
The class was very hard and that's why i was bored the whole time he is very bad at teaching.
His use of online coursework for homework was frustrating at best and hell at worst. His curves are set insanely high to make up for the fact that his exams are hard. He's not particularly polite or caring about sudden emergencies or conflicts either. If you have the option. take this course somewhere else. You're GPA will thank you.
Awful
This is by far one of the hardest classes I've ever taken. You have homework due six nights a week. YES SIX NIGHTS A WEEK!! Sun-Fri there's a homework assignment due. Some homework assignments take up to three hours per assignment! Also there are SIX exams PLUS the final. That's an exam every two weeks!! Then the final! The exams are really hard.
I took the Impact version of this class and we had daily quizzes with little time to complete them. If you made one little mistake on the quiz, you usual did not have time to go back and fix it. Also super strict about 3-person groups; one time there was a group of four, and he literally pushed one of the student's desk away. Intimidating guy.
Owen Davis is a tough grader and teacher especially with the how difficult Calc 2 is at Purdue. stay on top of the homework & do well on the quizzes you should be fine He gives big curves at the end of the class and on all exams he also drops a few quizzes and homework assignments. Get on his good side and youll be fine,if not ur screwed.
Its a hard class. definitely study ALOT. The main issue is the online module the exams are done in as they require a certain format. Also exams are 10 questions and are 90% open answer so they are unforgiving. Make sure you do homework as similar questions will show up on the exams (especially the more lengthy ones).
The online coursework is frustrating and asks for an incredibly specific notation. There is no partial credit and most of the grade comes from very difficult exams taken the same way as the homework. There is virtually no theoretical mathematical explanation and the course is mostly just learning to use formulas. Not fun. Very challenging.
Sends out unnecessarily long emails SEVERAL times per week where he encourages students to drop (which, in my opinion is unacceptable). The class's online homework/exam system is not the best, but it is reasonable. But this class is basically a conglomerate of math-related things that have no clear connection between subjects.
The exams are impossible and if you miss something as small as a negative in your answer, you get the entire thing wrong which drops you down a whole letter grade. Randomly puts questions on the exams that were never taught or discussed in lecture or the homework. Only good part is that he posts online video examples if you miss class.
This class is crazy hard. If at all possible, take it at Ivy Tech instead. You have to go to class or you definitely won't pass. The tests are really tough, but the curve can be nice. Going to SI will help, but try to avoid the class. Definitely the hardest class I've taken so far.
I had Davis as my lecturer; I would recommend trying to get into his class instead of being taught by a TA. He cares a lot for his students and offers tons of help material. If you want to do well on the tests, practice the homework problems again and again.
This was the hardest class I've ever taken. Considering that Calc is tough as it is in Purdue, Owen made it harder with the way he formatted his class. There are 5 exams and a final, all online with only 50 minutes given. The exams are open-ended questions which makes it even harder and more time consuming. Definitely don't recommend.
DON'T TAKE IT
The class was way too hard for non-engineering calc 2 - we covered so much more than just calc 2 (up to linear algebra).
I had Owen as my lecturer and it was the best choice for this class by far. He really challenges his students in his lectures with quizzes, but he prepares you for the exams by doing this. I definitely wouldn't take this class if he wasn't the one teaching it. He cares about his students and only wants you to succeed, but he expects effort from you
Avoid this course at all costs. The material itself isn't that difficult, but the format of the course where you have to take loncapa exams makes it extremely difficult. You also have to learn the notation to submit your answers so you may have the right answers but you're writing them wrong.
His MA16020 class is extremely difficult for a calculus class for business students. Least favorite professor in my time at Purdue
This class is part of the MAI index for business students and was very difficult. I was unable to get an adequate grade to be eligible for upper division classes in Krannert. If you have the option, take this class somewhere else and just transfer the credit over. Its not worth it to take it at Purdue if youre a business major
They give you very little time on exams and quizzes (which are always a surprise so dont skip class)
I took it in Spring 2018. I think it is the easiest class I have ever taken as a bio major student. I ONLY went to class on Fridays for quizzes. You can get an easy A on all exams as long as you do all the hw and understand them. Examples are given in class but those on course website are more helpful. Only tests, quizzes and hw matter.
Owen Davis is not a good professor. I am taking the hybrid class and it is one of the hardest things I have ever done. Owen purposely makes this class so challenging for no good reason. It is so hard and I need to pass this class yet Im struggling so hard. I am a A plus student and am very great at math. Btw I do the hw and everything
Take the course somewhere else
Homework takes ridiculous amounts of time and the exams are extremely difficult. I suggest taking this at Ivy Tech or something cause Owen will make you hate your life
I was good at math until I took this class. I just about keeled over because of how difficult homework and exams were. Youll spend hours doing homework, and If you dont do well on exams youre ruined because thats where all the points are. Never in my life have I cried so much while doing homework for a class.
This class has the worst structure. There are 5 hard exams, for no reason. The quizzes are random, and the exams weigh for 80% of your grade. Beware. Owen also loves spamming your emails.
Makes math unnecessarily difficult to a point where it's impossible to do well unless you know everything beforehand. Constantly spams emails a few times a day where he says an A or B are not practical goals. 80% of your grade is from exams that are nothing like reviews. HW takes hours to do. Wish we had a book. poorly instructed. Expects too much.
I have never struggled with a professor more than in this course. Exams were the majority of the grade and averages were typically around 50%.Video notes have errors in them which makes learning how to do problems impossible. He degrades students for sitting 1 seat off before an exam, for having questions in class, and with daily excessive emails.
Hw due 3 times a week, takes hours to do. Tests account for most of your grade. Spams your email about what grades you should expect. Would not take class again.
This class is unreasonably hard for non-math majors and is harder than it ever had to be. I'm pre-pharm and took AP calc and got a 3 and got an A in MA 16010. This class is easily harder than my organic chemistry class and I spend 3-5 hrs. on every hw assignment 3 times a week. My work load for this class is more than all my other classes combined
This is the worst structured class I've ever taken. Exams are 12 questions each and worth roughly 80% of your final grade. Averages for exams are usually about 50%, albeit with a heavy curve (which you don't know until after the semester). Prepare to spend hours on homework. Seems like Owen enjoys making students struggle as much as possible...
He gets a bad rap because his course is hard by virtue of the material. He understands his course is difficult and curves the exams and overall letter grade accordingly. From my perspective, he does everything he can for us to master the material and do reasonably well in the class.
I almost killed myself taking this class and doing the hw on loncapa
Contents provided do not cover most of the homework. Spam you with a lot of long emails which can be simplified into one sentence. Notes on LON-CAPA is not helpful at all because every important sentence will come with a paragraph of useless information. Will make your life in Purdue a little bit more miserable but no pain no gain. Do the quiz!
Comes off as intimidating, and it's a little tough approaching him for some questions. Too much homework
The class is so hard, if you dont spend lots of time, then you may not be able to solve any of the exam problems. There is a curve, but the problems are hard, do not take this class, take it somewhere else if you can. Not because you cannot get a good grade, but because youll lose your mind doing hours of hw and studying for 5 exams.
I understand the course is difficult by nature but Owen Davis is not encouraging and is degrading. He sends 4 copies of every email he writes flooding my inbox daily. His emails always talk about options for dropping out of the class and are always very vague on important information. And he even deleted the textbook link 2 weeks before the final!
The math department is a little screwy but Owen knows what he is talking about and gives examples during class that are like the homework and the exams. If you work hard and pay attention, it is easy to get at least a C in this course.
Get ready to spend most of your time on this class. It is way harder than it needs to be. There is no reason for the work overload that they give you. However, I must say that Owen does care about the students. He works very hard to make sure every student has the resources they need. All in all though, the class is just straight up terrible.
Hardest math class I have ever taken. The homework takes hours to do and is due three times a week. The homework does not prepare you for the exams either. The curve does take you up a few letter grades, so that helps, but it shows how bad everybody does in the class because he is a poor professor.
Sold my soul to the devil just to get that grade. He loves making homework problems 10x harder than the example problems he gives. Theres 4 midterm exams plus the final for 5 exams over the semester and Im pretty sure I lost my sanity after the 3rd exam. Learn to make the math resource room your new home if you want to do well in this class
If you have this class as a hybrid, RUN THE OTHER WAY!! Quizzes have to be done in class and cannot be made up if you miss class, so if you have it at 7:30 in the morning, RUN THE OTHER WAY!! He also sends a ton of emails that are very long and annoying. I highly recommend taking this class somewhere else if you can. Thank you, good night
This class is insanely hard. The exams will break you, but the curves will bless you. I guess exams are made very difficult because some kids are actual geniuses and there wouldn't be a fair distribution otherwise. Anyway, this professor did seem to really care about students throughout the semester, and I found his emails encouraging.
Owen is like a caring grandpa who loves wordily sharing his life philosophy. About MA16020, the homework is the root for everything. Nearly every question in quizzes/exams/extra credits was taken from it just with the numbers changed. Exams account for more than 80% of the grade (4*120 out of 580). So be careful!
Took 16020 as a distance course and found it challenging to learn just through Owens online lectures. The homework can feel like busywork because theres so much of it, but they set you up well for exams. There were 4 midterms, no final exam, and lots of quizzes. The exams are tough but the curves will save you.
Hardest math class I have ever taken. His exams are meant to kill you.
Professor Davis is a good guy who does care about the success of his students. But, this class is unbelievably difficult, even though the curve is decent. Take this class at Ivy Tech, make sure you get a good grade in Calc I before you take this class, etc. This class is the hardest class I have taken so far in my college career.
Homework before every class that takes hours to complete every night. Extremely difficult exams. Good luck.
You won't have him exactly in your assigned class, but he has SEVERAL videos explaining problems in the class. He cares a lot and people give him crap because the class is insanely hard. The problems aren't as hard as they may seem because his videos show the same strategy but with different numbers and equations. Be aware of thousands of emails.
Just the facts. In this class you have to: -Do calculus by hand. Which is fine and entirely doable with effort. -Do it with a 1-line calculator (TI-30xa). This requires a rock-solid algebra foundation. -Do it all at 5 mins per problem (12 problems per 1hr test) Some may find his emails to be overly-frequent, repetitive, and somewhat patronizing.
Make sure to have a study group if you want to do the homework last minute, because you will not finish them under one hour. He tells us to purchase a one-line calculator for exams. DO NOT DO THIS. You are allowed to use your computer's calculator. Pros: generous grade curve cons: you will lose hair
This was one of the most difficult classes I have ever taken. Owen Davis is a great professor who really cares about his students, but this class was incredibly difficult. Homework takes multiple hours, 3 days per week, 2 quizzes per week. I took 16010 at Purdue and got an A easily. Taking 16020 at Purdue was a mistake for my GPA. Go to IvyTech.
Prof. Davis was not actually my lecturer, I had Prof. Rabieniaharatbar who I thought gave comprehensive lectures and fair quizzes. Davis is responsible for the 4 midterms plus final and the multiple hours of homework due every 2 days that left me mentally exhausted day in and day out. I had to put 75% of my time studying into this class to pass.
DO NOT!!! take this class at Purdue. Even if with another professor, Owen Davis is the course coordinator for all sections. This class is impossibly hard, especially for what it is. LON-CAPA is the worst online math program I have ever used. He tells us "but it's free!" I would rather pay an additional $100 for an adequate program than use LONCAPA
Davis truly cares for his students and puts time into crafting emails made to help you. This course is tough and test heavy, so study hard and smart. As a student who just received an A in this class, study the harder homework problems as they will likely appear on exams ;) Final Takeaways about Davis - Caring -Study the HW's -Take adv of Piazza
taking his course is the stupidest decision I've ever made in my life. This guy does not even know how to teach properly and I learned nothing related to exams in his class. DO NOT TAKE HIS COURSE.
Excellent professor. Really accessible outside class. The class is difficult and it is supposed to be difficult. However, as long as you keep up with the materials, speak to the TAs, and attend office hours, you will ace this course. He will ask us to do lots of sample problems which will prepare you for the exam. Nothing surprising.
Here is the rundown: -Nice person -To many quizzes -Loncapa is bad -Tests are stressful -Knowledgeable about math but can't communicate ideas to students -Course coordinating subpar due to wordy emails -Needs to have more structured lecturing instead of aimless groupthink.
I think that Prof. Davis did his absolute best to ensure that students are comprehending the topics. This class (especially the exams) were incredibly difficult, however Davis does a good job at providing resources (Piazza, supportive emails, videos, etc.) that will help
Much harder than MA 16010. Still quite difficult even during the summer session. Homework is time consuming and can take hours for one homework assignment. Exam content is clear. He is a nice professor that wants the best for his students, but I would not take this unless you are really confident in your math skills.
Owen makes it extremely clear how to pass the class. Never miss lecture, there are 2-3 quizzes/week. Just for perspective, my quiz and homework grade were both between 50-60%, but those were minimized by the value of the tests. I got an A on the final and an A- on combined midterms (with generous curves). Learning content is #1 above all else.
He make many mistakes while teaching and expects the class to catch them for him. His explanations are confusing and he moves too fast to actually learn anything. The only way to know about quizzes are in class when he tells you.
I cannot believe that some people do not like his class!! Super nice and kind prof. If you need to take applied calc PLEASE take his section. He always emails the notes with some advice and office hours. He often spends his lunches in dining halls for additional unofficial office hours. I never thought I'd enjoy calc but here I am! Take his class!
I can start this off by saying tests are 80% of our final grade. If you fail tests YOU'RE done. He doesn't mention anything about quizzes so you have to go to class to know. There's really no reason to show up because you have to teach yourself to really understand what's going on anyway. Good luck.
Messes up occasionally during lecture, but sends detailed emails and will help you during office hours or after class if you have questions. You have to go to class to know when the quizzes will take place and he tells you the work he expects you to show to maximize your points. Straightforward, caring teacher.. just put the effort
Professor Davis is honestly just an average math teacher. His lectures can be hard to understand sometimes so I used the LONCAPA videos a lot. He is very kind and I think genuinely wants his students to succeed. The quizzes in class are hard but prepare you for the exams well. Go to ohs if confused, he is really understanding. LOTS OF HW
Lectures are relatively good, he does not make attendance mandatory but attending lectures are the only way of knowing when quizzes are, he does not post them online or in emails (most of the time). Makes a sincere effort to connect with his students and is a pretty cool guy when you get to know him. Has many resources available if you need help.
If you want to actually learn how to do math, I would not recommend this professor. Your better off learning the material from a monkey with better notes. As well as not teaching, he enjoys pestering kids to put their phones away and occasionally makes a mockery of someone for asking a question (no one knows what's going on). Avoid at all costs.
