Prof. Loftus is OK, it seems to me that he expects to students to 'magically' already know things that they might not necessaily know,,,but other than that he is a fair teacher and gives you the grade you deserve.

For Developmental Chemistry, Mr. Lofthus was difficult to understand, unless you had Chemistry before. Of course, if you had taken Chemistry before you wouldn't have taken a developmental level class! Not likeable at first, improving with time tho. Has potential.Would not take again tho.
omg! this man is supposed to give beggining chemestry and any answer he gives makes three more questions! he seems to be a nice person as a person, even kinda cute, but entering this class without any previous chemistry classes humbled me in my former belief that i can do anything i put my mind to!
this teacher shouldn't be teaching beginners.
real fast
Hard to learn in his class unless you are going to major in CHEM. He is not very good at connecting with students who are not very scientific minded. Not very helpful.
He is helpful if you seek help from the beginning, very nice and helpful guy OUTSIDE of class, but the work in class is a joke, so hard to understand and he moves really fast. Good luck if you take this class the class average for the first two tests was 69. Not too great
One of the worst professors i have ever had. Extremely hard teacher who i think gets pleasure from seeing his students struggle.Goes way too fast and doesn't give enough clear examples to prepare students for test.Very intimidating professor that is hard to ask for help.Avoid this class at all cost! Be prepared to fail. His test are extremely hard!!
Horrible teacher!!! If you MUST take this class, then take the online version with another teacher! He goes entirely to fast and does not explain anything.
He was a very good teacher. If you were motivated. Many of the kids in my class didn't care.
He is the worst teacher in history I mean Chemistry someone should go to the dean so he can go back to kindergarden and slow down. He is like a big type writter. He'll say some thing like did you get that and you'll be like no and he'll go and Next Chapter. GET A TUTOR FROM THE START
You had better read and read before you get his lecture or it will never make any sense. He doesn't explain things in lay terms so you have to get it on your own. Truthfully I could of taken this class on line because I had to get it all myself. Nice guy, but is way to fast for anyone to comprehend.
Nice guy who knows about chemistry. It's a hard subject and that's why some dumb kids don't get it. If you try, you can at least get a C. Mr Lofthus, in case you're reading this, I thought the tamale would make you feel good about yourself.
I hate chemistry, but I had no trouble following this prof. This was a hybrid class and he was very good about posting lectures online and going over the material in class.
This is a great professor. Very willing to help in anyway he can. Some people are intimidated by him. Don't know why. If you talk to him he is a caring teacher. He wants to see students succeed. You have to be motivated to do well. However, his teaching would be more effective if labs and test were promptly returned after grading to discuss errors.
Great Teacher. Has personality to help break up the monotony of the class. The final exam is not comprehensive.
Everyone who says he goes too fast has never been in a real college class before. THIS ISN'T HIGH SCHOOL! That said, he will slow down if you ask, but you have to ask. He has a tendency to let everyone catch up on taking notes by going off on a completely unrelated tangent. You have to be careful not to be distracted if you get behind.
really nice guy.taking him for the summer in the 5 week session. He is very clear about what he is talking about which sometimes gets confusing.class is hard though & I dont recommend taking it for in 5 weeks.Id rather take him in the full 15 week course.I hope he curves the final grade like other chem teachers if u kno what i mean, chem after all
He is very knowledgable about the material but sometimes he is hard to understand. At first he comes off a little cold but once he warms up to you, he is a nice teacher. Tests are very difficult!
Weeks late in grading & returning work; ?I?ll get to it when I get to it.? Assignments are essentially ??do all of the odd numbered questions at the end of each chapter. Then log onto OWL and do the assignment s there.? During lab you can find him in the front of the room surfing the net. Do not assume teacher=help with this guy.
Excellent teacher, just don't be intimidated. He helps in any way he can. He tries to get you to come in to office hours and suggest outside help. He definitely warns up and will work with you. I enjoyed this class a lot.
I didn't care for his teaching style. Very time consuming homework. Slow grader. Nice guy.
He's knowledgeable, pretty serious and professional. He's there to teach, your there to learn. Do the time consuming homework and attend lectures. Ask questions if your confused. Get the recommended study guide, it helps as well. I'd take him again if I had to retake this class.
this professor had some trouble relating personally to people in his class. he has a "mean" sense of humor which is why he and i got along so well. very high drop rate, and many people barely make the 70 to pass. do the homework whether he's collecting or not, ask questions OUTSIDE of class, and show up for every lab and as many lectures as you can
Nice guy real geeky. Tests especially #3 test is extremely difficult. Late to class everyday and late with all work. Dont ask to many questions. Get a TUTOR! Labs you are on your own he plays on facebook whole class. Keep up with Homework 5% Lab 25% tests 75% of grade. I passed because of tutors. Very hard and only chemistry teaher at western.
This is NOT a class you can just breeze through. Go to class and go to lab. Lofthus has a great sense of humor and is essentially a nice guy. He genuinely wants his students to learn. ASK questions. If you don't ask the questions, he will assume you understand and don't need him to explain. Hard tests, so make sure you do homework/OWLs.
HORRIBLE! This is a deveolmental class and he acts like all the students were Chemistry majors. You ask questions and you would get a stupid look. Never could remember things that was mentioned to him on the outside of class and not helpful. Slow posting grades. HORRIBLE!
He is a good professor and a funny guy. He will go through stuff you do not understand. He is in his office a lot and is very welcoming. There are two tutors assigned for the class. You put in a shift and you will see the results.Labs and OWL's push your grade by one whooping grade. He gives a fair amount of extra credits too. Highly recommended!
nice guy. teaches material that is test specific. will re-answer questions until everyone's specific (sometimes redundant)question is answered. not an easy class, but if you do all OWL (homework) and attend each class, a very high grade is attainable. if you work hard, he will help you in every way. he is a slow grader, which is only negative.
Owen Lofthus is a very good teacher. His presentations in class are clear and organized. He answers without hesitation, although you might get his a taste of his signature sarcasm. He notes the idiosyncrasies of each of his students and helps them accordingly. His door is always open and he has assigned minions..err.. tutors. Vice? Slow grader..
Very helpful when you have questions. He's obviously there to help you learn; he knows his material and can communicate it clearly. He makes use of the Blackboard software - lectures are recorded (helpful for test review), and homework is graded online. I highly recommend him!
Mr, Lofthus is a great teacher and very willing to answer questions. During class, he will actually ask for questions, and wait a few minutes to make sure there are none. It is a running joke that he is "intimidating", but he's really not. Just wait till he wears his Chucknorium shirt to class. Chemistry is a hard subject, but Mr. Lofthus is great!
Horrible teacher. Had to go online and youtube how to do things, also had to spend a lot of time in the LTC for chem help. If you ask him a question he will look at you like you are stupid and laugh at you. Most people say that half of the class will fail his tests. It's a reflection on him if most students cannot pass a test, don't you think?
All around nasty guy. He's mean and puts the students down. He spends lab time playing on his laptop at the front of the room. He says he wants to help, but scolds the student when they ask a question, or if they answer a question he posed incorrectly. I don't think that he should be teaching.
A great teacher who gets a bad rep. He is very knowledgeable and is there to teach. Students who do not like to be challenged should just take a class with one of those teachers who spoon feeds you everything. This is college. If you want to learn chemistry, go to class, read your text and do the homework - you'll be fine.
Loftus is an AWESOME teacher. I had him for chem 111 and was so sad when I found out he wasn't teaching part two. He truly makes chem entertaining and easy to understand. Was also willing to help at any time. I took chem in high school and hated it, so I wasn't looking forward to this class, but I really learned a lot from him. Would def recommend!
Professor Lofthus is a wonderful teacher. He adds humor to lighten the pressure, and is extremley helpful. He uses every day things to help you remember things; He teaches practically.i love that about him. I think a lot of times he gets a bad wrap because young people don't like to be active learners. Do your part, and you'll excel NO DOUBT!!
Really don't know why he has bad reviews, he was nothing but helpful for our chm 111 class. He tried extremely hard to be sure every one understood and was more than helpful. Also made class interesting everyday and just an overall nice and chill guy! If you honestly want an A in this class, you can get it with his help.
Loftus is not a bad teacher. Ask questions in class, and you will see that it is a lot more interesting! He was really helpful in class, not in lab so much. As long as you do your homework, labs, and really study for test you will at least get a B. Read the textbook it helped.
Mr. Loftus is very helpful and cares about how his students do. He has a great sense of humor and if you go to his office, he is more than happy to help you. His class isn't easy, but if you show up and do your work you will get a good grade.
I really like Mr. Lofthus! He is so funny(well he tries to be) and he is more than willing to help all of his students.
My only real complaint is that his homework assignments are 50 questions with each question having around 4 parts each. I'm not a very lazy student, but I think I only was able to finish one of those assignments. As a person he is very nice and tries to reach out to the quieter students. Granted, he is NOT a pushover and not someone to disrespect.
111 is a breeze compared to 112
I did not like Mr. Loftus, he comes off rude and gets aggravated easily. He snapped at a group in lab and made a girl tear up. He rushes through the math problems, when those are the hardest things about the class. He assigns SO much homework, that isn't even taught. I got an A in chm 111, but he was just confusing. Only pro is he can be funny.
Mr. Lofthus is a GREAT professor!! I highly recommend his class. Chemistry is a challenging subject, but Mr. Lofthus explains it very well. He's always ready to help so visit his office hours often.
I found him to be a GREAT professor. Extremely knowledgeable about the material and really has a passion for Chemistry. He truly wants his students to earn good grades. There to help and answer any and all questions. Cares about his students. E-mails back very quickly. Well organized & a very fair grader. I would absolutely take him again!
Mr. Lofthus will help you as much as he possible can. He responds well to emails if you have any questions. And keeps office hours open in order to help. He provides endless opportunities to boost your grade, but makes you work for it. It is not handed to you, and I admire that.
He is the man and gives you the chance to get an A if you study. If you study and attend class then you will be good
Mr. Loftus explains chemistry well and his class made chemistry seem attainable and understandable. I learned a lot and began to enjoy chemistry. He is a fair professor who is always willing to help students. Ask questions, do the homework and you'll do well.
I found Mr. Lofthus to be exceptional knowledgable in Chemistry. Not only that, he wishes success on his students. He's a great help in lab if you don't understand it (what's the point if you don't understand) and he actually goes through the test material specifically. Also, having the book is a straight-forward guide to success. Recommended.
He's a great guy with a corky sense of humor. He's tough, but almost any teacher you take will be. He's willing to help and truly cares for his students. Study and you'll do well.
I failed Chemistry in highschcool and had to take Chm 5-11 in college. Before hand, I was nervous I was going to struggle like I had in high school. I am so thankful Lofthus was my teacher. He made chemistry understandable and really seemed like he cared about all of his students passing. I would DEFINITELY recommend him! Great professor!
Idk how he is in class but hybrid is terrible. Emailed him 3 times for an answer before getting a response, watched him yell at 2 students in lab when equipment broke by total mistake, and very little instruction given. Spends all of lab sitting on his laptop and telling you to find your own answers when asked. Horrible for students who need help.
Took 111 over the Summer. Not sure about how different it would be in a full session, but Mr. Lofthus was incredibly responsive. I don't think it ever took him more than two hours to get back to an email question; even on weekends. Very helpful in a lab setting and ended up offering a number of bonus point opportunities throughout the course.
Summer class, be prepared to dedicate every waking moment of your life to this class in order to get an A. Early on not too bad, but as the month wore on I was choosing sleep over hygiene as the hallucinations from sleep deprivation kicked in. If u work over 20 hours this will be insanely hard to balance. Class was 90% VT kids, they were struggling
He is a very knowledgeable professor, and he is fairly personable. Unfortunately, his tests are extremely difficult and he is a merciless grader. That's not to insult him in any way, but if you are looking for an easy passing grade, look elsewhere. In all fairness, I took his class during the summer. It may be easier during regular semesters.
Mr. Lofthus is very clear and concise. He tells you exactly what he expects and he's not very lenient when it comes to grading. He doesn't give extra credit often, but when he does, it's by showing up to class! GO TO CLASS! Also, read over the in class examples for the test. His tests are 70% of the grade, but the final isn't cumulative.
Knowledgeable teacher. test are very difficult, but gives a little extra credit. speaks very fast. doesn't have much of a test review. This teacher really makes you work for your grade. one of hardest class I've ever taken in my 4 years of college. Smart, good teacher, but I wouldn't recommend this teacher due to how hard he makes the class.
Compared to chem at VT this class was very easy. The tests are very easy to pass if you have a basic understanding of the material. He grades lab reports very easy and the homework isn't too bad (only twice a week).
Coming from someone who struggles with chemistry and barely understood Chem 111 with another Prof., Lofthus was willing to work with me and did not make me feel bad or dumb for being lost sometimes. The class is very hard unless chem is your forte, so be ready to work! He explains ideas well and encourages questions and discussion. Great experience
Professor Lofthus isn't a professor just for the money. He genuinely enjoys what he does and he really does care for his students. Attend class, email him questions, and use his office hours as much as possible and you will certainly get a high grade. The best way to study for his tests is by using the self-assessment at the end of each chapter!
Mr. Lofthus is a great teacher! He really cares about his students and wants you to succeed but he will make you work for your grade! I really struggled with Chemistry and he worked with me throughout the semester to help me understand it better. HIGHLY recommend him!!
Lofthus is a great teacher. I took him for both chem 1 and 2 and he was very kind to me. If you go to his office hours he will definitely help you. He wants you to succeed. He records all of his lectures and gets back to you quickly when you email him. Chemistry is difficult and you will have to work very hard to do well, but he makes it doable.
His is very good at making chemistry simple. This class has affirmed my love for science. He grades fairly quickly, is generally responsive to emails, and tells corny jokes in class. He also records lectures, which is very helpful, and twice gave out extra credit. However, he can have a rude tone when you ask questions, but idk if its intentional
Had a great experience with Professor Lofthus in 111. He really cares about his students and is always willing to help if something doesnt click during lecture. He likes participation- he would give extra credit for showing up to class. His test reviews clearly tell you what he wants you to know for test day. Do the problems in the textbook!
Great teacher
I was very excited for this class , but as soon as we had the first test I knew I was in trouble. I met with him to go over the test I flunked, he wasn't very helpful. I got tutoring every week, met with him after every test and he would say the same thing "seems like you don't understand something ". This class sucked .
Hands down the most unorganized class I have ever taken. Im guessing he got covid but he went MIA for a few weeks. Had a sub for lab that didnt know what she was doing. He also got a sub to do online lecture. Overall this class was a joke. His ppt are extremely long, with basic facts that are useless when actually trying to understand.
I signed up for Prof Loftus after seeing his good reviews. I immediately struggled with the material and often went to him for help. He was accessible but wasnt able to break down the concepts to me. He often stated: I dont know how else to explain this to u. So fast forward, I got another professor & did so well, I was exempt from the finals!
Lofthus is very peculiar, like a lot of STEM professors. Sometimes he does struggle to break things down enough for others to understand because he is very knowledgeable. FOLLOW DIRECTIONS IN LAB. He gets irritable. If you ask direct question and participate, then it should be doable. I personally enjoy him and his class.
Despite good things I heard about Loftus, his online class was the worst class I'd ever taken. I had above a 3.5 gpa and had never even failed a test before I took this class, and ended up failing 2/4 tests and the final. I am taking this class from someone else this semester and getting an A.
Assignments had errors in them. Right and wrong answers were switched. Professor acknowledged this but, from what I saw, did not adjust grades. Prerecorded lectures did not sound like his and his one-on-one help was just him reciting the book over zoom. *Responds* to emails quickly but had to ask questions multiple times to get clear answers.
Professor Loftus is passionate and extremely knowledgeable about chemistry. He is a great teacher, but he expects you to put in the work because it is a demanding and challenging subject. I feel like, with any subject, having the right attitude/mentality goes a long way. Becoming genuinely interested in a subject makes it easier to learn.
I'm a straight A student in biomedical science and took this class last fall. Most of the class didn't know what was going on. Honestly everything was terrible. The online textbook MindTap is the worst thing I've ever used. The labs were not explained well and the teacher did not help. He was gone for half the semester and is bad at answering email
I began the class excited to learn. I was ready to deepen my understanding of chemistry. However, I quickly learned that I made a mistake in choosing my professor. Lofthus was not very helpful, and in fact, I felt shamed after asking questions. He often seemed very sexist and failed to teach students the material. Bless you, if you're stuck w/ him
This is a demanding, very rewarding course. If you're not interested in the material, though, you'll miss what an excellent course this is and the many benefits of having Lofthus teach it. It's obvious he prioritizes helping his students and he enjoys making CHM accessible. Answers questions promptly and thoroughly. You do have to show up mentally!
Lofthus wasnt a bad teacher, he just wasnt the right teacher for me. He didnt give clear instructions for most of the assignments, which left us confused. When we would ask questions, his responses werent helpful. He mostly read from slides during lectures. For lab reports, he didnt provide any guidelines. Hes a super tough grader as well.
He is a nice person who is willing to help if you put in the effort. His instructions on assignments arent always super clear. If youre going to ask questions, make sure you elaborate because his answers can be vague. Hes a tough grader and is very unlikely to give full credit, especially on lab reports. Study hard and pay attention in lecture.
I really liked Lofthus. Attendance isn't mandatory but NEVER skip. He will sometimes give out extra credit if you show up to class and not a lot of other people do. He covered the material really well, however during lab, if someone makes him upset, he will stay upset for the remainder of the lab.
Pros: -often gives extra credit for showing up to class -cares about students success and will offer help Cons: -slow grader with little to no feedback -vague, slightly condescending answers to questions -assignments consist of online hw, lab reports and tests -reads only off powerpoint/learn only by online txtb -poor attitude and no help in labs
I originally took CHM111 with another professor and did not do well, but when I retook it over the summer with Professor Loftus he seemed to really care about his students and make sure everyone understands the material and his tests really reflected the lectures he gives. He is a little strict on lab reports but everything else seemed fine.
Had more than one extreme outburst in the lab at several different students. Very passionate about chemistry but that doesn't mean he cares about you. If you don't understand something he can only explain things one specific way so hop on board.
Very unorganized in labs and gives vague instructions, most of the time is on phone during lab, and only talks when students approach with questions. Does not help when you ask him questions, instead he looks at you funny. only does lecture and expects you to know everything. fast paced.
To anyone preparing yourself to take his class be warned that passing the class will take more than a C. He goes off a point system that is impossible to reach if you do poorly on tests. He often is non-engaging with students and during labs and even exams themselves will stay on his phone. Do not take class if you don't want to feel belittled.
My experience was that of a mean-spirited and uncaring person who did not have the patience to teach when a student was struggling. It was only after I went on to advanced my degree at another institution I realized how poor of a professor he is. Specifically, mocking derision for using office hours to seek help was a unique behavior of his.
