Professor Svalestad is the best. He's funny, laid back, super intelligent, understands how hard it is to be a student. He tells you what's going to be on the exams and has online quizzes open book. He's truly a great guy and wants you to do well. The class isn't a breeze though, as econ is tricky. He does an awesome job at explaining it all.
Probably one of the best, understanding, and intelligent teachers I have had in years. He is very considerate of situations and is very reasonable. Teaches well in lecture and is gladly answers questions. I am no the best of students but I earned an A because of him. I would recommend him to anyone taking any econ courses.
his class is helpless because he will just read through the power point for you with only few explanations. he cannot finish teaching the whole chapter at the end of the week, and then lets you take a online quiz (which will become harder and harder)
he is one of the best prof i had at uconn. very helpful and understanding. and this course is supposed to be easy if you carefully go over the material and the textbook. anyway owen is the best!
Took him for both 1202 and 2202. Both classes were well taught. Attend class he makes things very clear and understandable in class. Studied by using the book only- got B+ in 2202 and A- in 1202. Definitely one of the better econ profs.
Owen is a regular nice professor. He himself is clear and straight forward, the website with quizzes he uses and the book that goes along with it is what is not clear. He gives the opportunity for extra credit at the end though which brought me from a C+ to B-... Overall, his classes are an ok option to take. Not easy A or B though.
All he does during class is read from slides, and he doesn't even make his own slides. The multiple choice section of the midterm was made of online questions that he didn't even write himself. Lecture is a complete waste of time because owen is the laziest of professors and everything he says can be found online.
Owen's Macro class is pretty easy. A 13 of your grade is weekly online quizzes, another 13 is your midterm, and the last 13 is your final. I barely went to class, since he just reads off the PPTs and I got an A-. Just read the book, and check out his slidesmodules when you're studyingtake the quizzes and you'll be fine.
Very nice guy--he wrote a grad letter for me. Alright lecturer, some lectures are better than others. Make sure to do the readings--sometimes slides aren't enough. Good man.
He just stands there and reads off of the powerpoints, and doesn't even know what he's talking about. Multiple times students have asked him questions during lecture and he doesn't even know the answer. Going to this class is a waste of time, take Derek Johnson instead
Good Professor!!!! Participation is encouraged and when a question arises he answers it in many different ways to make sure everyone understands.
You have two options to do well in this class, you can go to lectures and take notes, or you can read the book. Powerpoints are online and he just goes over everything on the slides, which can actually be really helpful. He wants to see you succeed and gives you all the tools to do so
I took Micro and Macro with Svalestad, and I really liked the class. You DO NOT have to go to lectures or discussions if you have a solid understanding of economics. One weekly online quiz, a mid term, and a final. All the PPTs are online and there are so many resources to teach yourself the material. Not recommended for those who struggle w/ Econ.
LOVE OF MY LIFE. Great sense of humor, definitely a "do-it-yourself" type of class. My one complaint is that what he says is on the midterm or final isnt what it is, so just make sure to study everything.
I've taken intermediate and M&B with Sval. Yea he just reads off the slides and no one went to class, but I enjoyed it and he has a sense of humor which makes it not too bad. Since he knows no one shows up he tells the few that do what essays are gonna be on the test a few weeks before. READ THE TEXTBOOK, its so helpful. Very easy to succeed.
Going to lectures helps reiterate the reading, but I strongly recommend relying on the book. There are only 2 exams (midterm and final) so you'll want to do well on both for a good grade. Study as much material as possible because everything is on the tests, not just the things he says in class. Put in the effort to read and you'll do fine!
His tests are exactly what you learn in class. If you go to class and listen to what he says you will do fine. Discussion sections are also not mandatory, mostly just if you have questions. He's also adorable and he is guaranteed to make you laugh.
Owen is the man, but expect to teach yourself the content as his lectures are him reading from the slides created by the textbook, it is very easy to zone out but he is accessible and wants to see you do well. If you do the homework, show you care and make an improvement between the midterm and the final he will give you a good grade.
Really good professor. Lectures are not mandatory. He posts the powerpoints online. There are weekly online HW quizzes, one midterm, and a noncumulative final. Exams are straight to the point, not too specific, just know the general concepts and you'll do fine.
Lectures are unnecessary to go to, everything is posted online and all assignments are on myeconlab. just do the homeworks on myeconlab and use them to study for quizzes and tests and you will be fine
Boring lectures that aren't mandatory. In lecture he just reads straight from the slides and doesn't explain anything at all. I skipped class all the time and ended up with an A. But I did have to read the textbook and watch videos. As long as you do that you'll be fine. You have to do well on the midterm and final since they are each worth 33%.
He is nice, I don't get it why some people say his lectures were bored. I think the lectures were fine. no needed to buy textbooks.
In class, he just reads off the slides which are posted online so you don't really need to go to class. However, for some of the more complicated topics he does give good in class explanations and in class he often hints as to what kind of questions will be on midterm and final. Be prepared to read about 25 pages per week for this class.
Soo boring. He just reads off slides so no one goes to lecture and class is graded just on exams and myeconlab. Very old fashioned and stuck in the past type of teacher. Tests are online so generally if you try you get a good grade.
Owen is a nice guy but so incredibly boring. He is definitely the easiest economics professor at uconn so if you are just trying to fulfill the gen ed then take it with him. Only a midterm and final and they are both online. Weekly homeworks submitted online and are easy because you get 2 tries and he takes the higher grade. Easy A but boring class
One of the best professors I have had at UConn. He really wants his students to succeed, and will go out of his way to help them.
He's a boring lecturer, and just reads straight from the powerpoints. Can succeed without really going to class, only grades are online quizzes once a week (you get two tries and the highest grade counts) and three exams. Really not a hard class if you put in a little bit of time, and study before the exams. He's a super nice guy though.
Only midterm, online quizzes, and final make up your grade. Lecture is awful and boring. Exams are really difficult, it use to be alright cause you could take it from home but hes been trying new ways to test which were all really bad.
DON'T take this class, lectures are boring and are all posted online, making it easy to skip class. Graded only on online quizzes (super easy), and midterm/final exams (SUPER HARD). Took this as an "easy gen ed", studied, and it was still hard.
Professor Svalestad's classes are really boring. His lectures are very dry and he just reads it off from the slides. But, I guess his tests are easy. You just have to put in all the effort by yourself in his class
The professor uses slides that are straight from the textbook. He also always posts the slides online so going to class isn't necessary. There is only a midterm, final, and online quizzes, and there's little to no chances of making up your grade in the class.
The quizzes are all online, and depending on what he wants to do the semester you take him, your midterm/final will be either online or in class. He usually reads off the slides and tells you to go through some important topics on your own, but he is overall a nice man. Take this class if you're willing to learn econ on your own.
Svalestad is a nice guy but hes not a great professor. He just reads off the slides and doesnt really know the answers to some questions so other students in the class answered. Its still easy to do well in the class though cuz the material isnt hard and he was chill with retaking stuff. If you study well youll at least get a B+.
Owen's a great professor. Sure, his lectures are mostly just him reading off the slides, and you could still probably pass without attending class, but he's a good guy. 1/3 of your grade is online quizzes (very easy), and then the other 2/3 are a midterm and final. I didn't use the textbook at all but it comes with the online hw so it is needed.
Yes, he is boring and just reads off the slides. But, it is the easier class. However, the quizzes he gives online are hard and usually just talk about unnecessary details. Exams are pretty easy. As long as you can pay attention to his lectures, he is probably the easiest, but not necessarily the best professor for ECON. (Especially vs Tomolonis)
He just reads directly off of the power points, so going to lecture is super boring and not necessary. The midterm and final are each worth 33% of your final grade and he does not give extra credit. The other 33% of your grade is weekly quizzes that you have 2 tries and 20 mins to finish.
He is good teacher and a nice guy. Yes his lecture maybe boring and unnecessary to go, but the exams are all online and easy, also the power point is clear to read and learn. Again, no matter how he teaches in the lecture, I really like him.
good lecturer even though he mostly reads off the slides, but the slides are very good also. test heavy for sure, weekly quizzes aren't bad. its a pretty chill class overall but you will have to study on your own a lot for the midterm and final; he wasn't helpful in preparing for exams.
Lectures are boring and you don't need to go to them. He reads off of slides based off the textbook. Grade is based on online quizzes (very easy) and two exams. If you study the midterm and final are very easy. Easy A
All he does is read off lectures and says "get a handle of this idea/go over this some more/read through this again" right before he starts clicking super fast thru slides. Does a new chapter every class. Quizzes are online and fine but preparing for exams are a pain b/c he doesn't narrow down anything so have fun studying 12 chapters of material
Reads off of the lectures so class can be pretty dull, but you don't have to take notes and you can look back at everything when you're studying. Exams are easy and quiz answers are almost all on quizlet! Overall, he was really nice and I would take his class again, despite how much I hated econ! Go to discussion & he'll bump up your final grade!
Can definitely skip class. Prof. reads off the slides during lecture, all of which are accessible outside of class. There are weekly online quizzes with 2 attempts; find someone in the class to do them with, so it's like getting another attempt. If you actively go to your discussion, your grade will be bumped up at the end of the semester!
Lectures are very dry, he just reads from the slides. I retained the info much better by reading the chapters myself. There's weekly quizzes but most of the answers can be found on quizlet. The exams are multiple choice but still difficult. Go to discussion every week to get your grade bumped.
A great guy but his lectures come straight from the book. lectures are boring and its easy to procrastinate with this class. Theres only 3 grades, the mid term final and quiz average which are all 33% of your grade so dont take a class with him if you have test anxiety.
Really easy A class, Professor Owen is an absolutely nice guy, always accessible at office hour. Every week has quiz online, easy, and also exam easy. Definitely take his class again.
Svalestad is a solid choice for economics. If you actually show up to class, it should be an easy A. Owen is always available during office hours, so go if you are confused! Also drops some hints about what is important and what's not. TBH you don't have to take too many notes, but some things he will write on the board that are impt and on exams.
Only graded on 2 exams and online quizzes. Some quizzes are fine as others are tough. Does not narrow anything down for exams as you need to review 12 chapters for each exam. He's giving us 50 mc questions and 3 essay questions to do in 2 hours for the final. For the midterm, there was 4 essay questions in class and 50 mc questions online
2 exams and online quizzes make up your grade. I stopped going to lecture because he fly's through the slides and expects you go over it on your own time. For his exam summary's it lists 12 chapters and tells you to go over everything. It's a shame because the content is valuable for economic majors but it needs to be taught by someone else.
Was actually interested in this class until I had him as a professor. Lectures are useless because all he does is read off slides & then skips some & literally says "you can read that on your own." which is ???? Grades are only based off 3 things: quizzes, midterm & final, so you really cant mess up on exams. Not really a charismatic professor
By far, one of the worst professors I have ever had. Doesn't go over the material well at all in class. Exams are tough. Get ready to study 12 chapters of material for the exams, as he doesn't narrow anything down.
Honestly no comment on him because I never went to class... still got an A thought by doing sheets in discussion and watching videos. Very reasonable tests
He's a very nice guy and makes the material almost stupid easy to understand in lecture, but puts powerpoints and textbook online so it's not mandatory to go to class at all except to get the maybe 2 questions he bases off his extra spoken material on exams. Weekly quizzes not bad and honestly solid class. Taking micro w him in the spring :)
Lecture material is taken straight from the textbook so attending lecture is not totally necessary. However, attend discussion as there is a bonus for going. Weekly quizzes, most of questions can be found online. Material is fairly easy to understand. The only problem is the mid term & final make up 66% of your grade and those exams are a bit hard.
Svalestad is definitely an easier ECON 1202 than Johnson. The course is not difficult as long as you do the weekly quizzes. The quizzes are like a third of your grade.
took 1201. not much work but the material can be tough. 1 weekly quiz, midterm&final are most of your grade, LOTS of material on them,midterm50 mc Q's in 50 mins- possible grade killer. not mandatory but going to discussion will drop 2 quiz grades. straightforward, has powerpoints, boring lecturer- dry humor. his quote"econ's all common sense".
His lectures are pretty boring, but he posts the slides online. I found it more productive to read the textbook than to listen to his lectures. There's an online quiz every week with 2 tries. Only tests are midterm and final, each worth 33%, so it can kill your grade. Not horrible overall, just boring.
Only grades are two exams and a combination of quizzes, but o very much enjoyed the class. Lectures may seem dull because he talks slow, but if you enjoy or are interested in Econ this is a good class to take.
Very good at posting weekly lectures (which run a bit long at times but otherwise helpful). Graded solely on quiz average (around 12 per semester), midterm, and final (33.33% each). Class seems to be the same year to year, lots of resources online/past quizlets that were accurate and useful. Overall pretty easy class
Professor Svalestad's macro is pretty easy. Not all the info will click at first, but overall it isn't too bad. Two things that bother me, though, are that he directs you straight to the text with no explanation of material for half the content and that he doesn't respond to student emails - like, at all - but he's a good guy in general.
Honestly this class is super easy and I love it! I haven't really learned much but overall Svalestad is a super nice and caring guy. I haven't had to reach out for anything just yet but he seems very open to help. Would recommend if looking for an easy A (especially online).
He's such a great guy, even online I can tell he cares about his students. Weekly quizzes, a midterm, and a final. Everything is in the lectures and discussed during weekly discussions (participation in discussions doesn't count towards grade). Hw is optional but helps w the quizzes.
The class is literally just quizzes and your midterm and final, 33% each. Svalestad seems nice and respectful, he would probably be great to take in person if not for COVID. All quizzes and exams are taken at your own time and all multiple choice. The class is extremely self explanatory. I only had to email him because my textbook would arrive late
Professor Svalestad is a pretty average teacher. You arent graded on a lot. Just weekly quizzes, midterm, and final. He doesnt cover much in the lectures so youll have to read the book to really understand the material. Other than that its a pretty easy class and mostly common sense.
Average Professor. 33% for quizzes and 33% each for midterm and final. Quizzes are fairly easy but have to study for exams. Lecture material is straight from the textbook. I have taken Prof Svalestad both in person and online and both are the same format and material. If you need to take econ 1201, Prof Svalestad is a solid choice.
Had this class online during the pandemic, so I can't speak for his in-person lectures. Lots of reading from the book, took about 4 hours each week. Watch the video, read the book, take the quiz. Predictable, which was nice. 33% midterm, final, quizzes, and he drops the lowest quiz. Taking macro with him next, DON'T TAKE JOHNSON OR YOU WILL FAIL
His Money and Banking online class is easy in the sense that you can look up all the answers online. I do believe that if it was in person, I would have had a more difficult time, as there are a lot of equations and graphs I'd have to know and memorize.
Online version is easy. That being said, the best way to actually learn the material is to read the textbook. Powerpoint and online lectures cover only the basics so I wouldn't bother. Honestly felt like he didn't care about this class since it was online and not one of his larger classes (take that as you will). Graded on 2 exams and 20 quizzes.
This is my 2nd time taking him, now online, and his lecture videos were pretty much useless. In fact, they were the leftover videos he recorded in Spring 2020. It just seemed like he didn't care. As always he was very monotone and boring, but the 2 online tests were non-proctored and MC. You'll only learn the info from reading the textbook though.
I only make honest reviews. This man is the goat if you are just trying to get a free A. The only assignments you get are weekly quizzes, a midterm, and a final. All of which are fully MC and non-proctored. I probably spent 10 minutes a week with this class and received an A. Thankful for this man. If you want to learn though; not the best option
I also took ECON1202 w/ him. SUPER EASY with everything online. Weekly quizzes are simple/easy, lectures are quick and useful, midterm & final super easy. have to admit I'm not actually learning much, but if you wanna pass with an easy A, this is FOR SURE the class. I def recommend if you just need the credit. Such a nice, caring guy
I took this class asynchronously, so I can't really talk about his character, but his class was so easy, especially after taking ECON 1201 as a prereq. I didn't have to watch a single lecture, just read a chapter and take a quiz every week.
Pretty chill, and the material is easy
I really liked Svalestad and have taken him for two online classes. Grade is based off a weekly quiz, midterm and final, none of which are on lockdown. Other than that there was a weekly lecture and weekly reading. Not too difficult!
I took his class online and it was very easy. There were weekly quizzes that are graded and you have two tries for the highest grade but most answers you could find online. I never read the textbook or went to his lectures but I got an A. There is a midterm and final but most answers are online again.
Online was fine most of the grades were test and quizzes and he gave two chances on the quizzes. Tas had meetings each week but weren't mandatory.
I took this online so I might be a little biased, but Prof. Svalestad is a nice guy who wants to see kids succeed. Its not hard to get an A in this class, and he really doesn't use any textbook, it was all MyEconLab stuff. If ur thinking of taking him for 2411, I think he is a solid choice.
Professor Svalestads lectures were clear. He assigned additional videos that were very helpful. You are graded on 3 things, midterm, final, and quizzes. You get 2 attempts for quizzes and he gives you until Monday to take them. I would definitely recommend taking him for both Microeconomics and Macroeconomics!
Midterm is 33% and Final is 33% of final grade. On weekly quizzes you get two attempts with the same questions. Lectures were 20-30 minutes a week.
Does not put in a lot of effort into teaching. He used past lectures the entire semester and assignment/exams were multiple choice so the website he uses grades them automatically, so not quite sure what he really did this semester. The class itself was easy and all answers can be found online. If Econ is not your major I would recommend him.
He is good. 33% Quizzes 33% Midterm 33% Final
While his lectures may be somewhat hard to follow, his quizzes are so straightforward. If you just listen to him and, if you're struggling, read the chapter of the textbook, you're getting easy A's on the weekly quizzes. Maybe take notes on your computer so you can Ctrl+F for the midterm. Make sure you have something to draw with for the examples.
Not the most interesting lecturer, but keeps it to the point and is good at simplifying some of the slightly tougher concepts toward the end of the class. Overall pretty solid
He reads off the lecture slides (so if you don't like that, well get some other professor). But the class is easy as long as you do the online homework/quizzes he assigns each week. There is your normal midterm and final that is online as well. Tbh I like his lectures because he mentions real-life situations in the economic world.
King. So sweet and caring. Class was an easy A, don't even need to show up. Love him!
Taking him again next semester! So nice if you approach him after class with any questions. The quizzes are pretty easy and he provides videos to help w material outside of class. My less than ideal midterm grade was my own fault bc I did not study and put too much trust in God. He makes jokes and is a gr8 guy! My top choice for the future.
taking another one of his classes next semester. He definitely knows what hes talking about. Lectures can sometimes be boring but so can all lectures. Keeps you drawed in by connecting almost everything you're talking about to real life examples. Only assignments due was a 20 question quiz every monday. Besides that just midterm/ final. Not hard.
He is a solid choice. The exams are online and the e-textbook he used was really helpful because it has practice quizzes that help you learn the material. Lectures weren't too boring. I'm really bad at econ in general but I did well in his class.
Great teacher! I ended with a 92, you can get an A if you get 91 or above! I would've done much much much better if I stuck with reading and taking notes from the textbook. Weekly quizzes that altogether are worth 33% of your grade. You definitely need to study for the quizzes. Midterm and final were pretty easy. Lots of self teaching personally!
Boring but very easy. He teaches fine but there's not a lot to it, weekly quizzes aren't difficult (but get a mouse for the interactive graphs) and they become different from the lectures and practice quizzes later on. Midterm and final use the same/similar questions. You can use quizlet when really stuck but only happened for me on the big exams.
Don't have to attend lectures or take notes. You can pass just by doing quizzes and midterm and final. Weekly quizzes on achieve but you can cheat and google the question. There are no makeups to the quizzes and all of your grade is quizzes and tests. Take him if you want to get an A in econ and not have to do any work really
Good guy cares about teaching
I love this prof's consistency. Both macro and micro are just one easy quiz per week (two attempts) and the midterm and final. His lectures can be a lil boring but he always lets you out early. Attendance is not required but occasionally he gives quiz hints/answers during class for the people that go.
Svalestad is the textbook. Read the textbook, you are Svalestad.
Owen is a really easy going professor. I took both his Micro and Macro classes and his classes are beyond easy. As long as you have a grip on what is being taught, the quizzes shouldn't be too difficult and for the midterm and final you can literally look up the answers online (no lockdown browsers)
Great guy & willing to work with students. knows his material/really passionate. lectures are straightforward,. theres a lot to go over outside of class to get a good grade. hw not graded, but manditory in order to do well on the quizzes (online, 2 attemps). writes his own exam questions, so don't expect to find on quizlet. this class can be hard.
I took him for both micro and macro and thought the lecture was really easy. You can get away with skipping lectures for the most part and all you are required to do is a weekly quiz and a midterm/final and all of them are online and non-lockdown browser. However, if you want to actually learn I wouldnt recommend his class because it is very bland
took both micro and macro, classes are made up of 1/3 weekly quizzes, 1/3 midterm, and 1/3 final, all of which are multiple choice taken on your own time online without a lockdown browser. pretty straight forward. Some may find the lectures boring but I enjoyed them and the connections he made to current events using the topics we were learning.
Read, take good notes and go to class! He references specific things on exams from class.
Professor Svalestad was a great teacher. His instructions were always very clear and each week was the exact same- textbook chapter reading followed by a quiz. There was a midterm and a final. The quizzes were easy, you were allowed 2 attempts per question. His lectures are heavy and sometimes boring, but he always let us out early.
One of the easier classes I've taken at UConn so far and definitely the easiest ECON course I've taken. Graded on weekly module quizzes all on Pearson and the midterm/final were both on Pearson as well. Lectures aren't mandatory but it's nice to stop by every once in a while.
This class was so easy and I don't even like economics. There is one quiz a week that you have to do and two exams, besides that there is no homework so the workload is super easy. He is a good professor.
Midterm - 33.33%, weekly quizzes - 33.33%, final - 33.33%. I never attended a single lecture. The slides had way too much info. I didn't learn a single thing in the class if I'm being honest. I cheated on all the quizzes and exams and ended with an A though. If you actually want to learn, going to lectures probably wouldn't help. Teach yourself.
Just go to the lectures and take notes and you will be fine. He's a very nice guy who cares about his students (the ones that go to class at least).
Summer session class. Quiz sets due every week with one final and 3 discussion posts.
The class is graded on quizzes, a final and a midterm, none of which are too bad if you go to the lectures and read the textbook. Overall, the class isn't bad and Owen's a good professor, although a touch boring at times.
Great class, long lectures, definitely go to class
Very knowlegable class was a little hard, but good professor
Good professor and decent class. Evenly graded on quizzes (not through lockdown browser), a midterm, and a final which you take outside of class. Drops 2 lowest quiz grades. Not all answers for exams/quizzes are on Chegg/Quizlet, so make sure to read the chapters.
Try not to skip lectures. He will start putting stuff on quizzes down the line where answers aren't on the slides and chegg/quizlet won't help you. Grade is solely based on weekly quizzes, a midterm and final (lowest two quizzes get dropped). Lectures can be dry but definitely take notes on what he says. Solid professor overall.
Prof. Svalestad is a really nice guy and cares about making the class reasonable for students. Grade is calculated by average of weekly hw quizzes, midterm, and final so be sure to study because each exam is worth 30%. Go to class to help you understand material and youll do fine on weekly quizzes. Really interesting lectures if you like economics.
Svalestad is an amazing professor. From the first lecture, you can tell he has a genuine interest in the subject and wants his students to understand all concepts presented. Grade is based off of quiz averages, midterm, and final. There is no homework as long as you go to lectures and take good notes. All exams are done asynchronously.
You don't really need to attend lectures, most of the quiz answers are on quizlet, chegg. But if you do attend lectures and write down everything he says, you will see that he is actually so intelligent on the topics he talks about. He is an amazing professor, but he does not respond to any emails, you will have to attend office hours to reach him.
no extra credits. no pumpups on final grades. not enough time for quizzes
Pretty interesting course, overall not a bad professor, but the lectures could get super boring. Pretty basic course just show up to lecture, take notes, and you'll pass.
60 question only 80 mins, and all of the question were so hard, it said open note test, but you must memorized all things. DONT take it....
Lecture is boring but not needed. Weekly quiz which is very easy, and then a midterm and final. If you take notes you will definitely pass.
Only went to class on the first day, you will be fine as long as you read the chapters of the textbook online and take notes and then do the weekly quizzes. Drops the two lowest quizzes and the midterm and final are pretty simple and straightforward as long as you have been somewhat paying attention to the material. definitely recommend this class
1/3 of grade is the final, 1/3 of grade is the midterm, 1/3 of grades are collection of 1 hw assignment each week. Attendance isn't mandatory, and as long as you sometimes go to lecture and read over the powerpoint note slides, you will be fine for quizzes and hw (all grades online, no lockdown btw)
Professor Svalestad is a seasoned professor who cares about everyone doing well. Attendance is not mandatory but I went just to listen to his insights, especially on Fed decisions. Simple course design and it's all online in myeconlab. If you're interested in banking or finance you'll actually learn a lot from him.
This class was everything I could have asked for in an introductory microeconomics class. Watch Jacob Clifford on youtube after the lectures to ensure you understand the topics, you can't afford to do badly on an exam or your grade will tank.
Mr Svalestad reminds me of my sweet grandpa. He is a gem to the UConn community and makes microeconomics so easy and fun. From time to time he likes to make personal anecdotes, so naturally, he can be boring at times. But he genuinely loves what he teaches and it shows.
Professor Svalestad is very smart and kind. There are two weekly quizzes that can both be completed within about 30 minutes. Everything is straightforward and online. I recommend taking his Econ courses.
Owen was my favorite professor this semester. Very funny, and not a difficult course. Attendance isn't mandatory, but he very often will put information in the quizzes that he only goes over during lectures, so I would recommend attending.
While his lectures could be boring at times I still found this class to be enjoyable. You are graded by a midterm, a final, and weekly quizzes which are rather hard but if you put in the work to understand the concepts and how they are applied, it's not so bad. Because of this class and the way he taught, I am now considering a major in economics.
his lectures are INSANELY boring like I wanted to fall asleep, he just speaks so monotone and makes everything sound boring even if it's actually interested. Though he is a good professor and explains everything it is an easy class! you should take it
His lectures are very boring and he posts the slides so attendance isn't necessary. Online quizzes for each chapter and midterm and final were online.
if you're gonna take either macro or micro (or both), take it with svalestad. grading is based on super easy weekly quizzes, the midterm, and the final. all of it online. he also posts his lectures and doesn't take attendance, so really easy to keep up even if you don't go to class. he's adorable
His lectures are so. boring. he speaks in a very monotone voice, but also posts all of his lectures online so you don't reaaaally have to go. graded by weekly online quizzes + a midterm and a final, both of which are online. easy class, but I didn't enjoy his teaching style.
Quiz each week. Everything is online. Never went to class, never read the textbook. He will drop the two lowest quiz grades.
He often doesn't reply to emails, and there are many homework problems that can only be solved after class or by going to the office to find him.
I took 2 of his classes, did not show face to 1 class, and ended with an A. All you need to do is a hw quiz once a week and thats legit it....... easy A
Such a chill guy. You'll have one quiz a week (open note) plus a midterm and final online (open note as well). Was super nervous to take macro and this class was a breeze.
Only went to class to get any extra information that he would ask about on the weekly quizzes. Funny guy, easy A for a STEM major.
Do not take this class. This is by far the worst class I have taken at UConn. He does not teach you anything, expects you to go through the lecture slides yourself, and forces you to take two quizzes each week. The quizzes are only open on the weekends and are 20 minutes for 15+ questions, one attempt per question, and all completely theoretical.
I have taken few classes now with him and as always his classes are super easy same with his quizzes and exam are always online.
He is a funny and real dude. He respects everyone who goes to lecture. 1/3 of your grade is online weekly quizzes, another 1/3 is a midterm and the other 1/3 is a final. There really isn't any work in this course. I probably spend 30 minutes a week doing stuff in this course (besides attending lecture). Easy A if you know your stuff!
Strange format. You need to go to the lectures to figure out what you have to read, but he doesn't lecture about nearly enough to be prepared for the quizzes (only open on the weekends), so you have to read on your own! It is made way harder by him because everyone is using Chegg. Nobody who isn't cheating gets an A in this class. Automated trash!
All the tests and quizzes are online, just go to the lecture and pay attention and you will do fine. Take 1201/1202 with him if you can.
The class is easy, but the professor's poor teaching style makes it hard to stay engaged. He is often rude and unapproachable outside of class, rarely addressing questions or clarifying doubts. If you want a supportive professor, this isn't it. Homework feels like busywork with little value, and lectures are often monotonous and unengaging.
Grades based off of exams and timed quizzes. Quizzes did not allow for enough time (I would consider myself a fast paced test taker) Professor was not compatible with schedule "I refuse to read emails, its a stupid form of communication. See me during my office hours" which in my case were only twice a week and during another class period.
Easy AF.... Pick Owen is the top choice for the ECON 1201&1202
The lectures are very boring but I've heard he is the best to take for this class. Most answers are on quizlet but its still easy to lose points. two exams and weekly quizzes are all that make up your grade.
Lectures are extremely boring but you dont even have to go. Only thing he does is weekly quizzes and a midterm and final. All tests and quizzes are online with no lockdown browser and you can find all the answers online.
He's a very straightforward nice guy. His lectures are easy to understand as long as you read ahead of schedule like he recommends. Quizzes every week, a midterm and a final; very simple. No extra credit nothing. Prof Svalestad is an overall good guy who gives it to you straight from the start. Take him over Johnson trust me. He's also funny lol
I enjoyed this class, attendance is not mandatory, and the quizzes are easy and they are online, the lecture notes are always posted, tests are all online, barely any reading. I would take this class again.
Professor Owen makes micro fun with his personal anecdotes, though lectures can be a bit dry. Weekly quizzes are easy if you attend class and use resources like Unstuck ai. Overall, solid class for an engaging ECON credit.
This class is really easy, graded on weekly online quizzes due the end of the week. The lectures may be slow, but he openly mentions what will be in the quizzes and makes it easier for you to take notes. Take this class with him if you can !!!
Weekly quizzes on the textbook reading he has assigned. The quizzes will also sometimes include things he only discusses in the lecture and not in the textbook. The quizzes are timed but not lock down. There is a midterm and a final also online with no lockdown browser. Overall a very easy course and Owen Svalestad is a funny guy.
The midterm and final are online, not lockdown browser. There is a weekly quiz at the end of each week. His lectures are really boring, and you don't have to go to class. Overall, a very easy course.
Money and banking is a fairly easy class, you could theoretically not show up to class once and get an A. Fully online quizzes and exams (no lockdown browser) make up the entire grade. Teacher is generally good but the lectures are definitely bland.
Easiest A I ever got in both ECON 1201 and 1202. All quizzes, midterm, and final are online no lockdown browser. His lectures are boring, but the content is easy so def recommend.
Super nice guy, class is easy if you pay attention to the main points. Only hw is a weekly online quiz based off that weeks chapter. Midterm and final are also online.
I also took Prof. Svalestad for Econ 1202. The class is okay. While the lectures are boring you do learn a-lot from being there. All the quizzes and tests are open book online. You have one quiz a week and the two lowest get dropped. He is a good professor and would recommend him for any Econ classes he runs.
Prof. Svalestad is a good professor, clearly cares about students and super knowledgeable in the field. Lectures can be really dull though, sometimes unnecessary as everything is posted online. Graded only by weekly quizzes and exams which aren't on lockdown browser. It's an easy course if you need the credit, just a bit boring at times
THIS GUYS HIM!
Owen is not the most interesting lecturer, but he is pretty funny, and his class is super easy! The quizzes, midterm, and final are all online with no lockdown browser.
Kumalala Savesta
good lectures, ok class
Showed up to the first few classes, realized all the work was online submission. No lockdown.
Great professor. Lectures were pretty boring, but he covered what was necessary. All the tests and quizzes were online. Pretty easy A if you put in the effort 10/10 recommend taking Owen.
I had him for ECON 1201 and 1202. His class was very easy. There are weekly quizzes, midterm, and final all online, no lockdown browser. I skipped class regularly and got an A. Highly recommend taking econ with him.
engaging, knowledgable, seems like a kind man, funny anecdotes, simplifies large topics/subject matters very well
He's a cool guy and teaches well. The material can be pretty complex but he does a good job addressing it. Most of the work for this class is done online and generally open note.
Lectures were a little boring but this class did not stress me out at all. The exams and quizzes are all online no lock-down browser. He's a very nice professor and approachable, just tells you what you need to know.
I've taken Prof. Svalestad for all 3 courses he offers. Each course it's the same. Weekly quizzes, midterm and final. Everything is online so you don't have to go to lecture though personally I don't mind it. With everything being online it's very easy to do things open note. I would take him more if he did more courses.
literally so easy i dont get it when i hear people complain about this class. every single assignment/quiz is open note no lockdown. the only homework is one weekly 20 min quiz, then a midterm, then a final, all online. i also did micro with him, i attended class on the first day then never again. so easy
such a nice man who is passionate about what he teaches. quiz each week. your grade is the average of your quiz average, midterm, and final, so its pretty important to do well on those. you can use your notes but they are timed which makes it more difficult. you dont have to go to class because he posts slides but its helpful to go to hear him
Not the best professor. 20 questions in 20 minute quizzes are really hard to do well in every week. Lectures are mad boring. Really nice guy tho.
Owen is a funny guy who clearly cares about economics very deeply. Go to class and you will do fine
