really cool short quizes but really challenging... will really make you think about the problem... tricky!!!amazing professor!!!
he is a best math professor that i have ever had in my whole life!
very clear. precise on what is important. very helpful. want u to know what is math. highly recommended for who like math or who doesn't
4 tests lets you use any calculator. Drops the lowest attendence is optional. NO GRAPHING!!! Lets you know what's on test ahead of time. Everything from the book
The quizzes come for the hw. And really try to understand the material fully before going into the test. The final is open book but it is extremely hard.
Tests are tricky!
I think he is the best calc professor at PCC. He is very clear and he will give you more than enough time during test to finish it. He is very very very nice. His tests can be hard, but they are not too difficult that you cannot solve them. Take him!
GREAT TEACHER. the best math teacher i've ever taken at pcc. so helpful, so nice, i was scared of taking the class but he made it a breeze. tests were scary but we got lots of time and could use graphing calculators. always early to class to answer any questions. i so wish he was teaching 5b and 5c at pcc. take him!!!
Best professor i've ever had in PCC. Hws are due the begining of tests; Quizes are super easy, only one problem!!! All questions of quizes and tests are similar to examples he gives out in classes. The gradings are fair and he gives out lots of partial credit!! Seems like no time limit for doing tests and final!!! Great great professor!!!!
He is great teacher, and the quizz and test are easy. Be careful, the final is hard, So try to more points in his quizz and test, you will get an A.
best math prof EVER!!! he makes witty comments about math sometimes. quizzes and tests are not that hard. as long as you did the homework, you'll be fine. he also explains in great detail and you can totally understand calculus. he even told us that the final will be open book/open notes. highly recommended. TAKE HIM!!!
He's extremely cute! His quizzes and tests are somewhat difficult, but if you do the homework and pay attention in class u'll be fine. He jokes around a lot, some people get it some don't. But to most of the students, he's funny. He's the greatest professor in PCC!!! TAKE HIM!!
the best math prof in pcc. will take his class until i finish diff equations. extremely clear explanations. tests might be tricky, no graphing. funny too.
Best Math Teacher ever! He always explain the material thoroughly, and he doesn't make you memorize unnecessary stuff. Also, he will tell you EXACTLY what is going to be on the test the day before the test or so, so be sure to go to class before test day or end of the chapter. Final is not hard, he is the best out of the best! Highly recommended!!
Good professor. If you have chances to take him, just take it. Always and always wonderful!
Dr.Riley he is the best calculus Professor I never had. His lecture was very clearly, easy going on.There is four test in the winter semester drop the lowest score(60%).HW(15%)Final test was not super hard.(25%)
Professor Riley is the best teacher I've ever met in my entire life! NO KIDDING! He's always well-prepared before he came to class and the lecture was clear. If you wanna really know what Calculus is all about, TAKE HIM!!
I FREAKING LOVE YOU !
This teacher is one in a million. Very clear in his lecture, always ready to help, and at the same time a modest person which is very rare nowadays.
He is really nice!
Love him love him love him. Best professor in PCC. He's always ready to help you and he's really nice! U'll fall in love with Calculus after taking him.He lets us see the BEAUTY in Calculus haha
best professor. however, you have to get above 92% for ur average to get A. i got 90++ but still got a B.
I possibly think this is a pretty easy class. if you need to continue with math till 5b, 5c or 55. not very recommended.
Professor is a cool "math geek" who knows his stuff.Very helpful. He is clear and concise. Gives you examples from the book. His homework is not heavy but it counts. He drops the lowest test. He actually tells you what type of problems will be on the test so you know what to study! AND the final is open book/notes! I'd take him again if I had to.
Really nice and helpful. He tells you exactly what's going to be on the test, and he drops the lowest score. He is always ready to help!! Highly recommended!!!
99%+1% recommend him! He's the nicest guy in PCC! I took both math 8 and 5A with him, just because I love him so much! Extremely helpful and responsible for every single student! TAKE HIM! YOU WON'T REGRET!
Easiest 5A class where many As were given to students(about at least half the class). If you are bio major or some majors that only require up to 5B or 5A,and never even need math again in career, u can take him for the sake of getting an A. If you are engineering or have to take up to 55, you will probably suffer in higher maths.
I have taken both 5a and 5b from Professor Riley. 5a is easy, and I end up with A, but I feel that 5b is a little hard, since I take it during short term and received my first B+ in my math class. But anyway, if u are smart enough, I believe it is possible to get an A.
Excellent teacher! Very clear and precise. Lovely manners and funny too!
He's really tough, his tests are nothing like what his reviews are for. I know alot of people like him but they are people who are gifted at math. If you have a chance take Strinden instead. He's much more clear.
well, let me explain what did I learn from his class. to get an A need a 92%. many people end up with an A because they have tests from his previous clas. he gives partial credit, but final is touch
i'm not good at math and i didn't even do well in the class, but if i took anyone else i would have failed. he completely covers the test goes over ever problem thats on it. the homework is based on check or check -, but is easy. attendance is chill too
Try to make the subject easier to understand! If you want to learn this subject, take him! He's very very very responsible and helpful! Nice professor...
SO EASYYYY :) got an A, if you can't get an A from him, I dont know if you can ever get any A from other calc teachers
he is the NICEST professor ive ever seen in my life! if you dont understand the subject, he wont be tired to explain until you get it. he indulges you to email him if you have trouble in doing hw. He is polite, responsible, patient.. and you for sure, its hard to find professor like him!
people say he's easy cause he previews the test, but some of the test are still hard! even though u know what kind of question will be on the test, sometimes its quite hard!HOWEVER, u wont NEVER regret to take him!he is the BEST professor at pcc! very polite, funny, responsible and dedicated! and u can see his passion to teach til u get everything
Students are cheating in the class looking at each other tests and still he doesnt take an action for it and is letting it happen :( what a promising calculus class for future preparation
THE BEST PROFESSOR EVER!!! enough said! you will never regret if you take him!
Even though he says what's gonna be in the tests, the questions that he puts there are quite hard and tricky! But he is the best professor ever and really helpful. I super recommend him! Just study hard and he will help you to you get a big A!:)
I took Math5A last spring with Pro.Riley, he is really good at explaining the lecture and makes your life easier with 5A. he is a fair grader and give a lot of partial credit. you have to beware that he only gives people who got 92% or more an A. overall, I enjoy his class
Now taking his 5c and took him for 5a and 5b. I got two As already and am on my way to another A from 5c. His classes are WAY TOO easy and basically he tells you what is on the test, b4 the test. The whole class should be getting As. But there're sum people not getting As. And i think if those students take diff profs, they might not even get an F.
Beware of grading system! Final is hard.
Not very easy
His class isn't as easy as I thought. He does review before the test, but the problems on the test are a little bit trickier than the ones from the review. Try not to rely too much on the reviews. On the positive side, he does explain things fairly well. So, if you just want to learn, take his class. If you just want an A, try someone else.

Awesome professor, will go to great lengths in order to help students, I think he's been the most helpful and devoted teacher I've ever had, gives plenty of extra credit but his tests aren't very easy
great class learned a lot. There was 5 quizzes and the final is easier than the quizzes. There is homework almost every class day. He lets you know whats going to be on the quizzes and final. he try to make sure you completely understand what is given to you. 25% on class 25% finals and 50% quizzes (grading)
great teacher, but he isn't easy. Riley goes beyond the book and sometimes you will see that on his exams. his exams are really challanging. also if you're not good at word problems DONT TAKE HIM. the word problems in the exams are ridculoulsy hard. there arent any examples in the book similar to the exam, so you have to understand the material.
Hes a nice guy and teaches well, but many times he goes too much in depth, way more than necessary. He does preview the exams, but somehow the test questions always have little tricks that were not seen before. Just had the final and it was HARD...basically he took most of the hardest problems throughout the semester and threw it all on one exam.
this prof knows and loves MATH! lectures with him can be so boring since he loves to talk about math instead of being straightforward. his tests can be challenging but don't worry about it. just show your work. even tho it's wrong he usually deducts 2-3 pts only. that's why i got an A in this class lol! warning-he loves giving out word problems
This teacher is the best math teacher ever. Took him this summer.. Everything he explained made so much sense to me! He is really nice and understanding. He cares for his students. Great experience being in his class.
i thought this was going to be an easy class, since it filled up so fast, but it turned out half the class were his previous students. i only done one exam so far and its tough. you get 1hr to complete 8problems. sounds easy, but its not. almost nobody finished within the hr time limit. he does review before the exam, but it wasnt all that helpful.
He is not hard on he's students. Doesn't care of you come I late. He only asks that you listen to him and get the material and ask for help. He lid always willing to work with you. Best math teach I have had.!!!
Great Professor!!! I definitely recommend him!
Great teacher! I took him in Winter. Lectures are a little dull, but he tries his best; it's Calculus after all. He wants students to do well. Some test q's come from the hw & notes. He is VERY clear about what will be on the test and final. He provides practice problems and what the instructions will be like on tests. I wish I had him for Math 5B!
You're a fool if you don't take this guy. He's the best lecturer I've ever come across in my life. He was so awesome that students made him shirt and took him out for drinks.
Most math profs will show much more interest in the students who think of math the way they do. Dr. Riley knows that this is a problem and goes out of his way to be very supportive of everyone. He teaches at a higher, more theoretical level than is required, and his tests are very hard and worth 95% of the grade, but it's completely worthwhile.
Taking his Math 5C right now. Very Very Very nice professor, tests are not hard but will challenge you if you didn't study well. Lectures are just as awesome as Dr. Socrates'. Just wish he had more office hours and would be a full-time professor.
This man is so kind, and so sincere and understanding. His lectures are crystal clear, his tests are straight forward, he plays no games with his students. Not sure why he isnt the highest ranked prof on rmp, but if you can, DEF take him. worth 7 am 4 times a week. class will remind you why you chose a STEM major (not money)
The BEST professor I have ever met in my life! Nice, kind, knowledgeable, humble, funny, and caring. You SHOULD DEFINITELY TAKE him if you have the chance! In his class you will learn with no pressure. Very cool professor.
Transfering, thinking back to the best professor at pcc. love you professor riley, keep doing what you do. you are the reason a lot of people are still in their majors
good professor, makes quirky jokes has nice stories to tell during lecture. good lecture. tells wat is on test before test day 100%. A+++++
Very nice professor. He is one of the best Math professors I know. I definitely recommend him.
Awesome professor! Lectures are very entertaining, informative and crystal clear. Also not hard to do well in his class as long as you put in the effort. Highly recommended!
Best math professor out there! I was so hesitant on taking a math course but he made it way easy! His lectures are clear and gives many examples in class! Always previews the test and lets you know what will be on the quiz. Take him if you have trouble with math you'll really understand him!
This professor was by far one of the best professors I've had here at PCC. He truly dives into the subject of calculus and explores basic fundamentals before practicing. His method in teaching math is something I truly enjoyed and gained much from. He even goes beyond Stewart's textbook. He is a relatively easy grader too. Great class!
The best math professor in PCC. You wont regret when you take him. Just do what he tell you and spending time to do his homework as well as the practice tests. He's also a easy grader, cares about his students.
I went into this class hating math bccs i didn't understand it. After having Processor Riley,He always made sure we left his class understanding the HW. We even had time to work on it in class. He always told our class exactly what was going to be expected on the upcoming quiz/tests. Down to the nbr of pages, problems and provided samples for us.
He's a really good professor, take him you will not regret it!! He's helpful, fun, and by far the best professors I've had!
After reading his reviews i thought his class would be good prep for calc. He doesn't follow the textbook which confuses the students. He doesn't prepare you for 5A. I got a B in the class but almost failed 5A because I had to relearn everything from 7A/7B.
Riley is the BEST math professor ever! I love Riley! Riley REALLY cares about his students. Not only is he easy, but he is a very nice grader, and an excellent professor. He doesn't torture his students with unnecessary information. I wish I had Riley for every math class I have take here at PCC. Take him! he's the best!:)
He is not "easy" he is just clear and gives a fair and expected level of challenge on exams. there's a difference between "easy" and him preparing you to succeed on exams. Every now and then he does throw jokes, really awesome person. His voice reminds me of Zoidberg
Truly amazing professor. Sometimes u may fall asleep in his class because he focuses too many details in his lecture; however, he can do math step by step with explanation, and provide good examples. Since It's an honors class, it's like regular class with same concept, except u need to do a project. Tests r really easy and he is an easy grader.
Fellow students, BEWARE. I took Riley's Honors math class at PCC and we were BOMBARDED with "HONORS LEVEL" exams and homework!!! You better like doing projects all while being bombarded with the most time consuming assignments and difficult TESTS! They label it HONORS in order to give you TRIPLE the amount of work and DOUBLE the difficulty.
Super long lecture but super easy exam. Drop lowest exam. Only Final can open book, open note, open iPad, open laptop! Yes! Allow all electronic during final. Generous partial credits and easy grader. Can push the deadline if you really ask. Post answers for hw and practice for exam. Easy honors project and take him if you want easy honors class!
Long class and he keeps writing on board and People have to write all the stuffs that he writes. Fair amount of hw and only check completeness. Test super easy and same as the problems he gives us. U can pick Topic for ur project and have whole semester to do it. Too easy for honors class compared to science honors classes. Take him if u need an A.
You can literally sleep, play games or do whatever you want if you took AP Cal AB at high school. Even if you didn't take AP class, you can still get perfect score at every test and even exam because he posts 2-3 past papers on canvas so that once you do and remember all the past tests, you can get 100 because all tests are similar to the real one.
Professor Riley is AMAZING. If you ever get the chance to take him, do! He has the most clear, entertaining lectures you'll ever find in any math class. I cannot say enough about him, his love for math and his students is an enormous amount. The kindest and most caring professor aside from Azizian for physics. :)
Prof. Riley is very knowledgeable in math and he is very patient to everyone. His lecture is clear and his test is based on what he teaches and the homework. He posts practise tests on Canvas for us to study. The only not good thing is that he was absent two weeks due to his health issue. Overall, taking him will be a good thing to do.
Professor Riley makes a really tough subject accessible. He's very understanding and cares about his students. He also gets really excited about how beautiful math is on a pretty regular basis, which I thought was really cute. Take him if you can, he's one of the best math teachers at PCC!
Very pleasant experience taking Differential Eq's w Riley. He's very enthusiastic about the material and he has a lively personality that enhances the learning experience.
4 Exams, 1 dropped, Monster Final. Everything about him is easy going and friendly, a great professor. Expected a monster course since this was the honors section but he really did make it a tiny bit harder thus much manageable. It was truly an honor taking a class with him!
Prof Riley is a great and funny teacher. I will always remember the time he wrote on the board with a permanent marker! LOL 5 chapters, 4 exams, 1 test grade dropped. His lectures and examples were very thorough. He provides practice tests for each chapter and final on canvas. Questions on the exams were always similar to lecture objective.
5 exams, 1 final, drops lowest test. This was an honors class, so there was a project due at the end of the year. Study based off of the previous tests on canvas, and you will do well. Patient and caring. Does a nice job explaining material. Definitely wants students to succeed. Encourages students to ask questions. Highly recommend him!
Took Riley for 5C and took him again for 55H. He's such a friendly, informational professor who is extremely thorough in his lectures. He also has a great sense of humor in my opinion, which is a plus. 4 exams total, 1 dropped. He provides many previous exams for you to practice, which is helpful. 1 project, which is open to whatever you want to do
I absolutely loved Prof Riley, He genuinely cares about his students. One particular thing I loved about him was how non judgmental he was and how understanding he is when you've forgotten something from past math classes that you should know. He is through and has very clear lectures. Test after every chapter, drops lowest test, final is cumulativ
Riley is the sweetest professor I've ever had. He really just wants you to appreciate math the same way he does. Definitely recommend taking him.
Words cannot describe how supportive and caring Professor Riley is :)
He really likes Caltech and MIT practice problems because my guess is he believes students in his honors class are capable of solving such challenging problems. Sometimes, they are on exams. If you are looking for a class tailored to helping your critical thinking in math discipline, this is for you! Prof. Riley is super intelligent and caring!
Man Riley was amazing! Dude was endlessly patient as well as hilarious through the entire course. He loves his students and loves math just as much. He makes math entertaining in a way I had never before seen and made me excited to come to class every day. Sweetest professor I have ever had. Take him, he's the greatest! Wish I could take him again!
He is AMAZING. I can see he really loves math and teaching. At the same time, he understands students all want to pass this class with good grades. Though his lectures sometimes are really hard, he makes the tests super super super easy. Its definitely an easy A class.
Never updates canvas so your grade is a mystery. He screwed our entire class on the final. He told us the final would basically be an outline of his past finals and it ended up being completley different with an exception to a couple problems. I only needed 69% on the final to get an A in the class and my grade ended up giving me a B in the class.
Easiest & most caring calculus professor in PCC. Dont get scared by honor class, his project is super easy and the tests look as same as his sample tests. I have an illusion that Im very good at Calculus now. Will definitely take again!
Professor Riley is arguably the best math teacher at PCC. He makes hard subject like math easy and fun. He loves to talk about Newton, Malibu and Caltech. Do the homework and solve the sample tests, you should be fine.
The class is easy the entire semester and then he will ruin your entire grade with an impossibly hard final. Avoid if you care about your GPA
Processor Riley is one of the best professors I've ever taken for math. His honors class is based off: tests, homework, project, and the final. He posts previous tests from other semesters as your study guides. Study those thoroughly and you'll be fine. Attend class and turn in all your assignments and you'll get a A. Simple as that.
He explains the topic of Differential Equations well! Only complaint is that you have to determine what method is best to solve certain differential equation equations, but it was Honors, so I don't blame him. Honors students, expect self-project related to 55. Practice tests on Canvas & HW similar to actual test. Also, his handwriting is small.
He's a great professor and very student-based. He's exams are mostly based on past papers that he puts on canvas. He's a chill guy who is always open to the student's opinions and grades very leniently! He made calculus very easy for me.
The most caring Professor ever! So passionate about Math :) I am beyond lucky to have been taught by such an amazing Professor. Lectures are very clear and tests are all based on lectures and past papers WHICH HE PUTS UP ON CANVAS! No words on how grateful i am to have been taught by you Professor Riley! Thanks for everything Professor! :)
Makes math interesting and often relates topics to real world applications. Tests are very straightforward and gives old tests to study from. Seriously an amazing professor, he's a real gem. If you can't get an A, it's because you didn't put in the work. Take him, you won't regret it!
His passion for math really shines thru. He makes you actually interested in calculus and has invaluable knowledge on the history of calculus and knows many prominent mathematicians and physicists. Agree with the last review.. if you don't get an A, you need to actually put in the work. Will be taking him for 5B!
Overall, a great professor. He genuinely cares about his students and loves to teach math. I 100% recommend taking his class!
Professor Riley is an incredibly caring and open minded professor. He was very considerate about our well being during the transition to online classes. However, because he got sick often, our class timeline was thrown off and we ended up only having 1 test, the honors project, and the final. He gave us a week to do the test and final
2-3 tests and a final for the entire grade. Homework is optional. He's a normal Math Professor. He introduces concepts, answers questions and that's it. You still have to learn elsewhere (textbook, YouTube or whatever) in order to get a good grade. It's not a cakewalk, but I'd say he's much easier than some other professors.
He actually cares about student's success and is willing to help each students. You have to take at least one of his classes before transferring/graduating from PCC. Great professor!
I felt that this class is more of INDEPT calculus. It's not just learning how to do it, its more of UNDERSTANDING the roots of calculus. I'm not a fan of math, but I will do it which is how I got an A. His lectures were harder than his quizzes though which was funny. Suggest taking him if you want to learn calculus and not how just to do it.
Took him for Math 5A. He's really sweet, but he should not be teaching. He is too old already to teach and online does not help. It's a teach yourself everything class. Lectures consist of him just talking over already solved problems and not actually teaching and doing the problems. Very nice, but I wouldn't take again if I actually want to learn.
used Webassign for hw. Had 3 quizzes, 1 midterm and 1 final. He grades very very fairly. He understands that students arent Einstein and if you make small mistakes on exams, hell mark off only a few points. He also has a lot of past tests that he puts online that you can study from, its very helpful. He doesnt use proctorio either btw
Professor Riley is very sweet and passionate about mathematics but his lectures are not enough for most of us to understand calculus. He would probably not see this but I really want to suggest he solve the example problems step by step with explanations.
Study his old tests + notes you will pass the class. He was often out sick, but that just ended up delaying our tests and gave us more time to study. His 5AB finals were brutal and the hardest tests I have taken. He explains things step by step better than the sol manual during OH. 1 of the best prof at PCC. His class always fills up early.
I'm honored to have taken Professor Riley's class. His lectures & fact that he is still teaching even at his age reveals his aptitude and passion for math. Exams were not easy & students often had trouble finishing on time. Past exams r on canvas & he tells you whats going to be on the exams. Generous with grading & honors project was not difficult
He is such a nice guy and he really knows what he's talking about when It comes to math, but I took his online class and pretty much had to teach myself everything. In the lectures he would just read over slides and he never showed how to do problems. Definitely not ideal for learning math.
Good guy. Make sure to self-study. Review the old tests.
Professor Riley is one of those Professors who inspires you to learn, esp. a tough subject like CalcB. Prof. Riley values the finer things to Calc and your journey learning it! That being said, chapter quizzes and discussions, as well as one midterm and final. I think the toughest part is the homework, since it is quite extensive, but manageable!
