I love this man. He is such a great professor, and so helpful. GO TO OFFICE HOURS. Lots of memorization, but very straightforward, organized, and clear notes/lectures. You will not be disappointed with this class because you come out learning so much!

Beatty is a great professor, as well as an awesome individual. very helpfull with school and anything else you want to talk to him about.

Beatty kicks ass. He's very funny, very helpful, and very clear. It's definitely better to take this class when he's teaching it. Tests mostly involve putting together what he teaches you, and not just regurgitating what he says during lecture.

whoever said he was hot was lying. beatty is a nice guy. pretty sarcastic with a high pitched voice. he'll answer you're questions and jokingly give you a hard time. his lectures are filled with a lot of sexual innuendos, which gets annoying after a while. the course was fun, but hard. study b/c everyone else does and there's usually no curve.

Great professor! Very helpful at office hours, but the class is hard for those not used to memorizing basically everything taught in the class. Some of the material was very interesting and applicable to real life.

My freshmen year at berkeley was horrible until i took this class. the professor is great with humor and is very intelligent! The professor made the material interesting and enjoyable. the best professor and CLASS i ever had.

Very friendly, very approachable, and interesting during office hours as well as lecture. Keep up with the material, it's more or less straight memorization, but I found it fascinating. It helped me decide to do Immunology as my track.

Prof. Beatty is a dedicated, thorough, and funny instructor. The exams for this class were never easy, required tons of writing and serious understanding of the material. But Beatty did a good job reiterating the important concepts, hammering them home.

The sweetest and nicest professor ever! His lectures are very interesting, clear and informative. He is very passionate and involved in the subject he teaches, which really passes on to his students. I learned an enormous amount from his class and would recommend it to anyone, not necessarily bio or med majors! Awesome class and awesome professor!

Beatty is an amazing professor... Easily the best professor I've had so far. He is very entertaining (and that's impressive for teaching about the immune system) and engaging. GO TO OFFICE HOURS especially before exams, he basically holds study groups. He is very approachable so don't be scared. I'm gonna miss this guy.

Doesn't use a textbook, everything is based on lectures. Exams are multiple choice, matching, but mostly short/long answer. Don't try to cram everything in before the exams since he tests concepts and not details. He gives practice tests before each exam and provides the answer key. Overall, very good professor.

I LOVE THIS PROFESSOR. TAKE MCB 50!!!! it changed my life, i'm not kidding. go to office hours, even if you don't have any questions. beatty is incredibly helpful and really funny in class. this was one the best and most worthwhile class i've ever taken at Cal!

great professor!!! very funny; an amazing person. very interesting class but if you're not a hard-core bio person do NOT take it. i heard that some advisors were recommending bio 1a prior to taking mcb 50. tests were OK...just make sure you memorize+UNDERSTAND everything.

He is probably the greatest immunology teacher ever. His lectures are well organized and he lectures very coherently.

He is a great teacher but somehow I cannot say he is a fair one. He definitely has favorite students. Those ones will get A or A- while not-so favorite ones will get B+/B.

He is a pretty good teacher. MCB 55 is definitely a great class!

GREAT CLASS. I LEARNED SO MUCH! This class is co-taught with Prof. Vance that did most of the lectures. Fall 07 was the first time they offered the class, but I hope they offer it every year. Great way to do your Bio Breadth and truly learn a lot of good information that you will not forget soon. MCB 55 Plagues and Pandemics!!!

Funny, cute, old-ish guy. Very enthusiastic about the topic, goes over very thoroughly in class. VERY INTERESTING topic!! made me kind of want to become a MCB major!! need to READ and STUDY for tests or you will not do well, but overall, GREAT CLASS!!

VERY INTERESTING MATERIAL!! But readings aren't all that great, and discussions suck because of the worksheets. Also, the midterms and finals are hard and you have to have read over the reader and really understand the topic to do well on tests. But if you like mcb, definitely take this class! He is a great prof and it is very interesting!!

Beatty rocks! GO TO LECTURE, take notes + you'll know everything when the test comes. He's very funny, well-organized, helpful, and just a cool guy. He's got a gift for making complicated material comprehensible. Don't be afraid! you don't need to know any science beforehand (I didnt), and he's very willing to answer questions. Section is a waste.

Great class. He was really funny and entertaining. He makes really boring material interesting. However, GSI's are not that great. Take very good notes because the reader is only a glimpse of what you will be tested on. Good class but a lil hard

Very entertaining lecturer. He's a bit short-tempered if he sees you being disrespectful in lecture, but he'll help you with pretty much anything in office hours, and is amazing at answering questions in lecture.

Great lecturer. Depressing midterms. Difficult final. I guess the class is on a crazy scale/curve. Read the reader before lectures. Listen to lectures. I liked his chalk style. PowerPoints moved too fast, but at least he posted them. Discussion articles are entertaining, but the questions are annoying. However, the group project was fun.

Absolutely adorable professor, who loves to joke around :) Doesn't use a textbook, so make sure you review notes, or get ASUC lecture notes (highly recommended)! Study everything, even the small details and you can pull off an A. Huge curve.

What a down-to-earth Prof. His lectures are based on selected slides from the book, so it's useful to review the captions in the book before lectures. His problem sets are actually harder than his midterm, but don't expect an easy A. If you take the time to understand the concept, the mountainous load of information won't seem so overbearing.

Dr. Beatty is incredibly engaging. He is definitely the best/my favorite prof at Cal in the 3 years I've been here. He knows his****, he's funny, and he's very approachable. This class definitely made me wish I'd majored in MCB. However, the class isn't easy. Don't just memorize the facts, be able to apply the material to real life situations

This professor really knows what he's talking about and uses engaging anecdotes and jokes to explain the material. The tests are kind of difficult, and he has high expectations, but there is a lot of opportunity to get help if you don't understand. Very interesting class on pathogens and the immune system. Doesn't let you use laptops though. =(

One of the best prefessors at Cal. He's crystal clear and very knowledgeable about the subject. Guest lectures are fun too. But the course might be a little hard for non-science majors. Easy pass, but hard to get an A.

Easily one of the best professors I've ever had. Incredibly knowledgeable, always willing to help students, super helpful in office hours. Great sense of humor, too. Exam was fair.

Took this class in 2008. He's one of the good ones. I was giggling WAY too much the first few weeks of class - if you get the humor, you will be entertained. Loved the material and presentation style (all blackboard) - I think this class inspired me to go pre-med. Do study hard for the exams, but I got an A before taking any other science classes.

Extremely knowledgeable and energetic. Has a sense of humour and is always open to questions and makes himself available both inside and outside of office hours. Overall good professor and person.

Co taught with Vance. Beatty Can be a tiny bit of a jerk, but he's pretty clear with concepts, and is flexible with office hours prior to exams. Only major complaint was that he rushed through lectures just to give pop quizzes at the end (personally never read the readings and got a B average on quizzes). Decent class, just didn't interest me much

Beatty is a crazy intelligent guy. His class was really challenging, but also pretty interesting. He was pretty clear for a while but got less so towards the end. His passion is evident, and his chalk drawings were gorgeous. Take this class if you're willing to work really hard for 3 units. And like bacteria. But it was still a great class overall!

Great professor,very entertaining and very encouraging of undergrad students. He's honestly one of the best I've had in terms of interest in his students, but be sure to go to his office hours to ask questions and get to know him. Always ready to help with questions and loves talking about interesting topics in immunology. Quiz/papers can be hard.

Awesome professor. The class is hard but the material is interesting as well as his lectures! Participation is important but he's very interactive and understanding and encourages students who are not doing well to go talk to him and work things out, or just in general talking to him is just plain interesting. Taking MCB55 next!

I seriously enjoyed Beatty's lectures- they were infused with a great (and biting) sense of humor and it was clear how knowledgeable he is on his field of study. That being said, don't take the class if you aren't prepared to seriously study for exams. Skipping lecture is also not an option due to iClicker questions.

Hes a fantastic lecturer! I was taking bio 1A at the same time and preferred beatty way more than Bio 1A. I now have a new love for immunology. The midterms are hard so be prepared to study but they are fair. really enjoyed this class!

Dr. Beatty is funny in lectures and this is a huge reason why I came to class. This way, he keeps the dense material more interesting. One group project, midterms are doable, and the class has a curve. He doesn't allow laptop notes, but that's okay. Because he will make taking hand-written notes fun again! Uses iClicker questions in class.

iClicker attendance taken; lectures matters for exams, although if you're taking the class P/NP you could probably get away with just memorizing the slides; readings assigned, but not included in exam; can be sarcastic/rude, so don't ask basic questions; helpful if you ask good questions Overall highly recommend!!

Prof. Beatty makes sure you thoroughly understand the course materials. He offered extra office hours and a review session.

Great professor! Super funny during class and explains things very well. Lots of teaching on the board so go to lecture and copy it down. There is a reader (it helps). One group poster project (not my fave but it was fine). I loved this class and I loved Beatty. Anyone could/should take him.

He is a great professor and presents the material super well. I enjoyed his third of the class. The class is not too hard and has a big curve of 1 letter grade at the end. There is a lot of small assignments to keep track of but they are worth very little. Overall great class.

Beatty is super knowledgable and a really nice guy when you get to know him. The nature of the class is that it moves really quickly and you have to put in lots of work from the start. The trick with Beatty is attending his office hours. If you get to know him, he'll definitely help you out and it will make the class so much more manageable.

Professor Beatty is an amazing individual. I took his class in Spring of 2016 and received a B-. His lectures are clear clear, and the use of clickers really brings engagement to the subject. He also offers great office hours, where he helps you understand any concept without being coincided. He helped me pull through college through struggles. TY

Fantastic professor. Very accommodating, helpful, and receptive. Beatty makes his classroom feel small and comfortable. Tests and quizzes are challenging but not unreasonably so. Attending lectures is very helpful as Beatty will clearly emphasize subjects that will be on midterms and finals.

Professor Beatty is a hilarious lecturer, and he genuinely cares about his students. His kindness and humour made his lectures fun to attend. Definitely go to office hours if you need extra help because he is very willing to answer your questions. Tests and quizzes were hard for me so I really needed to put in the work, but that's expected.

My favorite professor this semester, easy B but have to work a bit harder for an A. There are two midterms and one final that is weighted the same as the midterms, the final was a harder than the midterms. There are also 6 quizzes. Some of the quiz & practice exam questions are on the midterms so if you got some wrong ask him for the right answer.

My favorite professor at Berkeley so far. He clearly loves teaching, his interactions and little asides during class always made me laugh, and he's overall an engaging lecturer with great chemistry with his students. 10/10 professor, I'm taking MCB50 next semester because of him and he really inspires an immunology focused student like me :)

I loved Prof Beatty. I had him for mcb55 my freshman year. His lectures were great and I was stoked to go to class every day! Study hard for his finals/quizzes and you will do great on them, it's just a lot of memorization. Amazing teacher, definitely take him if you can.

Professor Beatty is a great professor and is very knowledgable about the subject. The class is very heavy on memorization. His tests and quizzes are solely based on the lectures and very few readings. The class is super interesting, but you really have to work to get an A. My advice would be to go to office hours and review lecture slides often.

Accessible outside of class. Definitely attend office hours. Quiz and tests are not hard if u study. Great professor.

Course was almost entirely lecture based (minimal readings) but Beatty is a good and fairly engaging lecturer. Grade is heavily dependent on midterms and final, so review for those, but it's definitely not the most difficult STEM class.

Super interesting lecturer, my favorite prof so far. GO TO LECTURES. There are 3 tough but fair midterms and no final. Last midterm is during finals week, but they're all weighted the same. Study hard and you'll do well. Only one easy homework a week. Take it if you like immunology, otherwise it may be too tough for what it's worth as a lower div.

DO NOT take for a breadth course (only if you're into bio)! Midterms were harsh required memorizing and extra studying. There are 3 diff professor in MCB55 course. IClicker points + recorded lectures regularly lacking sound make attendance necessary. Overall, I enjoyed this course and recommend taking it despite how difficult it was.

Prof. Beatty was extremely knowledgeable and put together incredibly thorough lectures. On the flip side, sometimes the info became kind of overwhelming, especially the lectures on immunology. He was very good about answering questions in class, although some people felt that his tone was slightly condescending. Very smart guy. Not super patient.

Beatty's a great prof; great lecturer, fun, interesting, & passionate. I highly recommend, especially if you are a STEM student. I'm an art history major who hasn't studied bio since 9th grade, so I struggled in his lecture (very stem focused with little dumbing down). A bit rude, but in a funny way. Be prepared to be challenged, but he's great.

such a great lecturer for a 9am class. his humor is definitely sassy but he keeps it real. his section was theoretically the hardest of the 3: but to be fair, there's a LOT of topics stuffed into his section. Overall great lecturer who is always available for OH and keeps things engaging

Yes I love Prof Beatty! Took him for MCB 55 and now again for MCB 50 last spring. Great lecturing style, posts slides ahead of time to review that are very concise. Him and all both GSIs were always available for Office Hours. Overall, graded by few tests on the harder side, but very doable keeping up with the lecture materials

Pros: Passionate, available for office hours. Decent slides for studying and answers many questions in class. Cons: Often doesn't finish slides in class, goes quick in lecture, sarcastic. Occasional info overload. B+ on midterm w/ studying. Harder than I thought for a breadth (1st sem freshman). Tip: focus on cell lvl material. Dont talk over him.

He was a pretty good lecturer, he just talked kind of fast, so it was a little difficult taking notes from the slides while also trying to listen to him speak. We used I-Clicker in his class like every day so I would recommend showing up to as many classes as possible.
