The worst prof I have ever had! Do not take him if you can avoid it!
The class was pointless beyond words. His class in no way reflects business reality, and has an insane level of busy work. In his defense, the biggest problem is with what it covered, which may be an RMU decision.
This class should have a sign on it that says "Say goodbye to your life" I don't mind hard classes, but this busy work is just insane! That and he doesn't have a very good lecture style, not inclusive at all.

The way he teaches this class it should be 4 credits. You spend to much time on material that is irrelevant in the business world. He is a great guy and truely loves teaching and loves his family and students. Remember he curves!!!

Awful teacher. Assignments took hours to complete. Lectures were awful. Never returned calls/emails for help. He even came to class once with his shirt on inside out. A complete mess. Ended up getting a B, but had to do tons of work to get it. I don't recommend.
Worst Professor at RMU. Conceided as hell. He thinks that he's friends with everyone, but in reality he's a dork that know one cares about. His class sucks
Arrogant and time consuming on his personal problems. Constantly downgrading RMU staff. Not enough teaching nor help from him if you can avoid try one else if possible. Has connections and tenure, Dean can see no wrong.
Though his intentions are good, and you will learn a lot if you can keep up, Laverty defines "Scatterbrain." He is more disorganized than you ever want to know, and every second of his lecture is a jump from one thing to the next. If you get behind for a second, you will be lost and he will dismiss your confusion as not paying attention.
Packy is a GREAT GUY, but he is a bit of a scatterbrain. He knows his stuff though. You just have to try to keep up and weather the storm. not sure if I learned enough though.
Do NOT take Packy. I repeat, if you have to sit out a semester as your only option, do it! He is arrogant and refuses to listen to his students constructive criticism. While most of his students are working adults with a finite amount of free time, he'll fill it and then some and you'll find yourself scratching your head wondering what he wants
Packy gives you your $$s worth. I took three undergrad courses w/him and would recommend any day of the week. Be prepared to work and you will really benefit from his knowledge (if that is why you are there...this site might make you wonder though). Thanks Packy!
Packy was a terrible teacher. A pure waste of space. He forgot to teach the entire class!! I could've just stayed home and sat in the dark and I would have gotten the same amount of learning I got from just listening to Packy. AVOID at all costs!
Great teacher you have to undersad that it is your job to learn in college.. But he is the absent minded professor.. Take him expect to work hard and you will learn alot.
I took Packy one time, and it's my last time. Never ever take him. He's one of the worst I've ever taken. He gave so much irrelevant homework and did not actually teach the class. He gave lots of homework as an illusion of his knowledge and work ethics. He wasted much of my time with his yapping and scatterbrain. He does not give good direction.
The man has no brain. I got an A in the class not because he taught us anything but because I knew what I was doing before hand. AVOID at all cost!
Packy is an interesting teacher, in that he knows his stuff, from about 7 or 8 yrs ago. Which is ok for this class in that the technology hasn't really changed all that much at it's basic level. But he is VERY scatterbrained, likes to ramble, and switch topics at random. Taking notes is almost impossible, and gives BIG Tests. Take at own risk!

Packy is basically a good guy, but he is very scattered. Very hard to follow his lectures, taking notes is impossible. 400 question tests and a ton of lab work. This is the most difficult and time consuming class I have ever taken, but if you do the work, you will get A+ certified at a cost of not having a life for 15 weeks.
everyone hates him and his assignments are like a riddle. one time, after everyone failed he claimed that kids from NA middle school have to learn this same material. probably because those kids dont have him for a teacher
Packy will help any student he has. He does give alot of work. If he quit adding new material to his class and just taught what he had it would be alot easier. Every time I have had him he always tries to add something new to a already huge work load. Barely passed his class having 15 credits and working 40+ hours a week.
Look his class is hard, but if you put in an effort, attend class, do the work even if its not always correct, then you will pass his class. Packy is very nice, but his class was very difficult. If you can pass this class, you can pass any class. Packy really does care, but you have to care too!

Except for the fact that 80% of the test questions answers are not in the book or brought up in class discussion and he has a tendency to ramble on about nothing for hours on end it's not that bad of a class
Packy is the worst I have ever had as a instructor at any level. Packy does not know what he is teaching. The most unorganized instructor, unprofessional, and weird personality I have ever had. The class is not worth it unless you want to hear about good drinking stories. He needs to retire.
What ever you do. avoid this guy. He has no sence of how much time is worth. If your working full time - do not take his classes. If your a full time student - do not take his classes. He is very slow to respond to most e-mail.
When teaching adult continuing education, Packy needs to realize people have jobs. His assignments do not make sense, his typos cause commands not to work and you spend all your time trying to figure out: space, no space! It takes him a week to respond to emails, I just think this guy should retire. He had us learning about "Floppy Disks"!

Please do yourself a favor: do not take this guy. I had him for an online class, and he is not accessible. You're not allowed to leave him a voice message, and he takes three days (minimum) to answer an e-mail. His assignments are extremely long, I don't know if he thinks people do not work or what. Avoid him at all costs!
Packy's N+ class as an elective for my MS in MIS. He told us we'd hate him by the end of the class and the ratings on this site show that he was mostly right. Packy is extremely tough but I found him to be generally fair. If you do the work, you will pass the class and earn whatever cert U R pursuing; N+ was a breeze after Packy. He's a good guy.
This guy is terrible. I wish I would have read the ratings on this site prior to taking the class. He is not accessible to help with homework and requires a ton of work for an 8 wk class.

Avoid if at all possible. There is something seriously wrong when this level of instruction is acceptable by the institution or students. The fact that he is salaried by RMU would be amusing if it was not so disrespectful to students who are paying his salary. Shameful.
WHAT A DISGRACE to the University. I cannot beleive this man is a teacher. Almost every single PowerPoint slide, and test, had mis-spelled words on it. I had him for an online class which wasn't too bad, but I would NOT want him teaching me in the classroom. It's a shame these bad teachers are still teaching only because they are in a union.
He is by far the WORST instructor I have ever had to deal with. Long tests, Lectures have nothing to do with the tests or quizzes. Likes alcohol that's for sure. He curves all the tests so they are "passable". Please do yourself a favor and avoid this class at all costs. I wish I read all these reviews prior to taking this waste of money class.
Packy doesn't really know what's going on. He is all over the place and is not prepared for class. However, the class is fairly easy if you put the time in and have prior Excel knowledge. Do the homework and take the practice quizzes. I received an A in the class, just do the work. You are in GRAD School.
Wow can RMU get an instructor that has more then just book experience? I would rather be taught by CD?s then this person. In addition he also did not care about me as a student. I should have taken someone else. I was warned and did not listen.
Packy is probably one of the most immature professors at RMU. He takes forever to email you back about questions. And when he does respond they are usually nasty and unprofessional in the way he speaks to his students emails.
Had him for the first class of my post-grad studies. Was seriously deciding whether or not to continue with the school if this was the standard.

This professor has no inkling of familiarity or know-how about industry, networks and hardware. He presents himself as a veteran. It's time to retire. Keep reading your books Professor Laverty.
Attending his class is a waste of time. His lectures are completely unrelated to hw/test questions, and his lack of professionalism is astounding. Expect little to no guidance from him, you must teach yourself the material. Avoid his classes at all costs.
Have no idea why the school keeps this guy around with all of these comments. May be the worst teacher I've ever had.
I don't know where to start, but to say this guy is an embarassment to his profession is putting it lightly. He doesn't even understand how to use Excel half the time!! He "taught" absolutely nothing at all, and the call came completely second to his social life. It's a disgrace that RMU employs him, let alone a preschool. Unprofessional waste!
Where to start? Packy turned an 8 week course into 15 by giving the entire class Incompletes without consent. By week four, it was apparent that his oft-incomprehensible lectures were best used as background noise while reading the A+ textbook. A nice enough guy, but I expect more out of a professor. Avoid unless you already know the subject well.
The best teacher that I ever had in my life. Stunning "stream of consciousness" lecture style that developed concepts from the mundane to the sublime. My life's work was determined by this man's genius and to see the comments of the students on this site about this brilliant man has broken my heart.
Took this class online. The assignments had nothing to do with the tests, and were lengthy and time-consuming to complete. I learned a lot, but the comprehensiveness of the assignments were only undermined by the complete lack of thought put into them. Missing steps in tutorials, blatant spelling and grammatical problems. will not take again.
This professor give alot of work and doesn't lecture well. Homework is very time comsuming, test are 3 parts, and the writing part of the test is very hard and you must have every detail to get good points.

Very challenging professor, but you will learn the content if you put forth the effort. He expects a lot of his students and will tell you up front to drop the course if you aren't willing to try. Proceed with caution, but you certainly will learn from him.

If you want an easy A stay away.You will work for your grade.Most of the work is busy work, so much in fact he can't grade it all.Most reviews are accurate, he will not hand you a grade and his work is full of double or triple questions.Busy, Busy, Busy work.So many sources you can't learn from them all.You must find short cuts to keep up.
He doesn't understand his students have other courses to also worry about. His online course consisted of 50+ page assignments and 400 question tests crammed into 8 weeks. He didn't teach and he has no idea what he is doing as a teacher. I will be taking this class again, unfortunately, BUT not with him. HE IS AWFUL!! Do no take any of his classes!
I had INFS6010 course with him last semester. He will keep your time (weekdays and weekends) totally busy with his assignments and tests. He is un-recommended professor.
I was warned by many that this would be a tough class. Yes, it was tough, but I learned. Packy states at the beginning of the first class that he expects us to work we were given assignments well in advance. The homework is intense and forces the student to research and learn. Tests are intense. Glad I took this class.
I took two Packy classes back-to-back, in the same semester. I was able to handle both courses, and get good grades too! Yes, he does give you a LOT OF HOMEWORK (imagine for two classes!), but YOU WILL LEARN from his quizzes and assignments. He is very good to talk to as well, and grades really easy. I felt he is a good professor.
Course work is nothing more than busy work so he feels important. About 20 hours per week or more. Some questions are not even a whole thought. Wiki and Google run the class work. Tests however, are word for word from the quizzes. I learned 0 from this class. He should be ashamed of himself as a teacher.
Yes, he gives A LOT of homework, but, it is those very homework assignments that really help. I learnt the complete SQL language, thanks to his assignments, and scored a 97/100 in the finals test!
A complete disoriented course but much better putting side by side to Dr. Paullet. He at least is familiar with the subject and I got something from the course.

Most of the people on here complaining that the class was "too hard" or there was "too much homework" are most likely lazy. Yes, there are 50+ page assignments; yes, the exams are 400+ questions, but if you really want to learn the material, take Packy. You wont like him during the class, but it is completely worth every drop of sweat and tears.
Good personality, but teaching methods are far too disorganised. When it comes to assignments, the work is definitely geared toward quantity instead of quality. It's all busy work with no real substance. His tests are also ridiculous (400+ questions). He is also very detached from individual help. Great "bar buddy", but terrible teacher.
A word of advice, avoid him by all means necessary. He is THE WORST professor I've ever had in my life. His tests are 400+ questions, and his assignments are absolutely ridiculous and take days to complete. He is NO help whatsoever and is EXTREMELY rude to his students. AVOID.
So much busy work. I don't mind regular homework but this guy just gives out hours upon hours of busy work for you to complete. An almost unrealistic amount of busy work. Not even worth to take. I have heard this from numerous students who have taken him. 1.9 rating? Why does he still teach at RMU?
I understand having to work hard for a grade and to learn, but with Packy you are working hard just to satisfy his need to over-complicate things. He's pretty resistant, so the easiest thing is to just do what he says - he isn't accepting of student thoughts or opinions. To be honest, his class is not worth taking for what you MIGHT learn.
The assignments and workload is well defined on Day 1. While there is a lot of busy work, there's no surprises in the course and Packy is genuinely invested in his students. He also rovided extra help on resumes and internship opportunities to the class.
This class is the definition of BUSY WORK! 1 HW assignment can take days to complete & the HW is very tedious, sometimes repeats itself. Packy is a professor who believes that it is his way or no way. The guy talks about the bar more in class than anything else & goes on rants about unimportant topics. I learned most of the info on my own STAY AWAY
I hope Robert Morris has the integrity to fire Packy. He has made my life hell with all of these assignments that do not make sense. He is the worst professor that I have ever had and it is not even close. I feel terrible for the students who will have to take this nightmare of a class. STAY AWAY
More work I have done in my entire life combined in one assignment. If you take him you will have no time for any other classes or for your personal life.

A lot of work sure but just do it while watching a movie or something. If you don't have two monitors then get two monitors. The class is easy. He grades things as fast as he can so you can be wrong on a lot of stuff and still get an A.

To simply put it, the tests were ridiculous and the assignments were ridiculous. There was no time for other course work or having a life outside of school. I plan to retake another course with a different professor. I will never choose another class that Packy is the instructor for. Thankfully, my tuition got refunded for this course.
By far one of the worst professors RMU has to offer, The class is a joke while most time is spent with him rambling about nonsense that does not relate to the class, the tests are incredibly long and repetitive, the labs are insanely long. He prides himself with how good his material is but I have never seen anything worse. Do not take his classes.
He is a great professor. Yes he has a lot of homework but he is very passionate about the course. He gives examples and stories from his life experience. he is a respectful teacher. If you go to his office, He is very welcoming person and he can help you with the assignments. He is really flexible about due dates. I would take another class.
Almost easy A if you do homework ON TIME. Workload is heavy, but it is possible as long as you are not a procrastinator.
As long as you show him you care and dont procrastinate he will show you grace. its a tone of reading but you do learn a lot from the hands on and i thought it was interesting to do. If you take the time to know him and show him that you care about the class you'll do fine. he might seem terrible but give it some time and you might like him.
The structure for Packy's Online classes include: watch hours of video content linked from other universities, some hard to understand, fill in multiple 60 page documents, then take a test that is usually timed around four hours and has 300 questions. If this is your type of class go for it, although I expect more from an institution like RMU.
This good rating does not mean the class is easy. Packy will take your easy A classes and shove them down your throat, and tell you he'll do as much with a smile on his face. However, if you want to actually learn and better yourself, you aren't going to find a better prof to learn from and question about the material and life in general.
You are in for the fight of your life when taking his class. Multiple 100+ page assignments are due every couple of weeks and the work is more than all of my other classes combined. Good luck keeping a job or social life while having a packy class. I will probably get a passing grade, but at what cost? I don't recommend taking his class at all.
If the mark of a great professor is how much work they give you then Packy is one of the best professors. If it is how much you actually learn then he is the worst professor and shouldn't even be employed. Seven 200+ page word documents for homework. Have fun trying to decipher his instructions since he is illiterate. How does he still have a job?
Packy is notorious for his insane assignments. However, for A+, he only requires you to complete Testout (which is still 13 chapters of work) and his 4 exams with 2 parts each (which take about 2 hours per part). Aside from that, you have to take 3 certification tests which all count towards your grade. A lot of work but possible to do well.
He gives an absurd amount of homework. He rarely does anything other than lecture during class.
You will never take another class like a Packy class in your life. Its a right of passage you must take a Packy class.
As others say, having Packy for a class is a rite of passage at RMU. Excellent professor and gives out legendary large assignments. Those assignments will make you learn and help retain knowledge (at least it did for me). Just work hard, stay on top it it, and youll be fine
In short I had to quit my full time job to make time to take his class. The amount of homework is actually cartoon levels and shouldn't even be possible. You will be dedicating all of your free time to his class. If you already started your career it's time to quit so you can take his class. I would say avoid at all costs, but it's not possible.
He sent one email in first week of class then refused, correct word, to discuss anything the rest of the class. Impossible to contact, refuses to answer phone, will not answer emails. I turned him into his boss after the class for lack of teaching but nothing can be done because he's been at RMU Too long and is protected. Problem with Professors

Let me start this by saying we had to move online due to covid-19. He didn't contact us about the course schedule, or anything until about 4 weeks after we shifted to online. His novels of homework contain numerous errors and dead links. Constantly brags/complains about teaching multiple classes, and finds almost any excuse to bring it up. Take? NO
Incredibly large assignments. Only had 1 (out of 6) assignments graded by the last week of class.
So here is what I would say about Packy. He, himself an awesome guy with a ton of knowledge and connections, he was always available to skype and would help me whenever. However, his assignments are extremely long. If you get ahead start and focus you will be fine. He just wants to see you make an attempt.
Do not I repeat DO NOT TAKE this class. One of the worst experiences ever. He will never admit his mistake has excuses ready anytime. All he talks is he has bunch of things to do, won't respond to emails/calls. First day of class received an invite 40 minutes before. Lots of homework. PLEASE DO NOT WASTE TIME TAKING THIS PERSONS ANY CLASSES!
He gives out 6 Assignments for the class and don't think to yourself only 6 assignments wow that's easy. NOPE, the longest 6 Assignments you will ever have and I guarantee it. And each assignment has at least 2 parts to it. Please do not take this professor if you do not absolutely have to. I promise you that you will regret taking his class.

This class was one of my worst and most frustrating overall academic experiences. Long, tedious and repetitive assignments riddled with poor and or confusing instructions. Very disorganized course with messy execution. Professor provides minimal interaction and grades are usually delayed. Definitely doable, but stay away if you can.
Did I learn? Yes. Did the class need to have so much work for me to learn? No. This was my last semester and I wouldve dropped and taken it with somebody else if I could have. Some of the longest assignments in my entire degree. Professor is very familiar with subject and willing to help with questions
Terrible professor, goes on multiple tangents throughout the lecture and class time feels completely useless and wasted. Assignments are also extremely lengthy and time consuming, so much so that I had to quit my job to make time for his course. If you are able to, do NOT take any of his courses!
To begin, very nice man, will always try to help with what he can. But, he assigns SO much homework to the point where you will not care about learning the material, but rather trying to get it done as fast as you can to get it done by due dates. Your family, friend, free time, work, and life balance will diminish. I wish he would understand this

Unfortunately if you are a CIS student, you are forced to take his godawful course. Be prepared for 6, multi-part, 100-200 page assignments with incoherent instructions, and 200+ question tests. You might as well quit your job, social life and drop all of your other courses to take this class, you'll have no time to do anything else if you take it.
Don't take him if you are a hands-on learner you will learn jack and quickly get burn out.
