She is really weird. She plays favorites. She will pick on some people if she doesn't think they are paying attention and she is a tough grader on tests.
She's hilarious! Go to class, go to her office hours and get on her good side. Do the homework, even though it's not for a grade. The tests/ quizzes will have problems that are EXACTLY like the ones from the homework. You will for sure get an A if you do these things.
She's adorable, but an awful teacher. She makes you feel like an idiot if you ask a question, and you're lucky if she even answers it. Granted, she's pretty funny and occasionally says silly things, but it's too bad she doesn't put that much effort into her explanations.
Really dislike this teacher and the way she grades. Took the exact same class in high school and got a B, took this class and got a D. If you don't answer questions the exact same way she does you get a zero. Ridiculous
She is a horrible professor. She has a hard time explaining herself and is pretty much teaching herself as she teaches you. She is rude and very unhelpful. You MUST use her way otherwise you get zero points. She does not give partial credit unless she likes you the best. Worst professor ever.
We always correct her work. It seems like she is learning material as she moves along. Then BANG! the test is filled with problems avoided during class time. Her grading is "messy" There is no set points for specific parts of problems, grades it like an ENG paper. She acts nice (until we ask questions)..she grades bad.. if that's what you want..
Attendance and homework are a MUST. She sometimes has a hard time explaining herself, but she teaches the material well. Very good about giving partial credit on tests and she explains how to do every single test problem the next day. If you go to class and do the homework, the class will be (relatively) easy
Awful teacher. Hard to understand. the tests are ridiculously hard. Do not take this lady by any means necessary.
Pal is a great teacher! Some people have a difficult time understanding her because of her accent, but she teaches the material very well. She goes over relevant material in class and if you have a question she will go over it until you get it. She is under rated here. I say this because she genuinely wants you to succeed.
I liked her a lot. Very smart but sometimes confused. Homework was hard, but the problems were put on the quiz in 146/sometimes in 147. The amount of extra credit was ungodly, I don't understand how people didn't get A's or were failing. The work was difficult but with that much extra credit and test and quiz questions from the homework? cmon.
Pal is a very good teacher. She is not the best at getting things across, but if you ask a question, she will answer clearly. Her classes are structured very well, you know where you are in the book, unlike some professors.
I really don't understand why Pal get's a bad wrap on this site. I thought she was a phenomenal professor. She's a little on the stricter side, but overall she was very motivating. She truly cared about her student's success. Just dont get lazy! Go to every class and ask questions. Sheused great analogies, which made the harder concepts easier.
Pal is a very good teacher, the people who give her bad reviews are probably just bad at math and did not put much effort in. She is definitely tough, but the extra credit she provides is enough to keep your grade up.
Pal seems like a very good teacher at first, but she goes very fast and didn't give me the time of day for help when I needed it. She goes very fast in class and doesn't like to take time to answer questions while she is teaching. I am a pretty strong math student, but this professor made this course much harder than it needed to be.
She's super cool and really funny, but I honestly had such a difficult time learning in her class. The extra credit on every test is really nice, but when none of it makes sense, it doesn't do much to help you. If you take this class, I hope you're really good at math, and I wish you luck my friend.
Pay attention to lectures and go to class. Make sure you do the online homework, up to 44 points of EC. The quizzes and tests all have extra credit. The homework questions come up a lot on testsquizzes. Class is made up of challenging info, but she explains it pretty well for the most part. Expect some curveball questions every so often.
Easily worst professor I have ever had. Barely speaks english, does not care about students at all, very rude and unhelpful. Very unfair grading style. I have always been a solid math student but this class left me questioning my life entirely. will be attempting to get grade withdrawn because it is nearly impossible to pass with Pal.
This teacher was probably the worst teacher I have ever had. She does not speak any english. If you go to her for help and can not understand her she just gets mad at you. I would never suggest taking her, and feel bad for anyone who has to take her in the future. Just a terrible teacher.
Pal has a good sense of humor, but sometimes she expects students to know the answer to the questions they ask her. She has a tendency to ask you to stop writing down notes while she talks, which can be annoying if you learn by both writing and listening. However, she gives out a ton of extra credit which pushed my grade from a C to an A.
The thing with Pal is, you'll have to get to know her to appreciate her. She does actually care for her students' success and will reward you for hard work and willingness to learn. What I found annoying were frequent requests of group work and a bunch of immature kids in the class. Other than that, no probs.
I found homework and weekly quizzes to be a bit easy, but the tests were incredibly difficult for me. She gives plenty of extra credit though - I got a B and two Cs on the tests and ended up with an A in the class. She's nice as long as you pay attention and do your work, and is usually pretty good at explaining things.
She was not good at explaining new concepts. Fortunately for me, I took Calc AB in high school and got a 4 on the AP test. I retook calc 1 as a GPA booster and am getting a C now(my lowest grade). She is a very tough grader, little mistakes cost you a lot on tests. It is possible to get 200% on all the quizes but they still can be difficult.
I didn't understand anything she said. This class is hard enough as it is, and not understanding the teacher is not a good bonus.
Definitely would take with this teacher again, although the material was hard she was always very willing to help if you needed it. Grades were based on 5 online homework assignments, 10 quizzes, and a couple tests. Offers TONS of extra credit, so there's always a chance to save your grade. She is extremely clear on what will be on the tests.
With her accent is it actually easy understand all the words she is saying, but the way she teaches does not work for me. She is available with office hours and willing to help but everything she said when I went to them flew over my head. Would not recommend her for her poor teaching style. Needs to know more than one way of explaining a concept.
Extra credit doesn't help you if you don't understand the concepts anyways. Her teaching style does not work for most people.
Pal is an awesome teacher. Her accent is tough at times but she starts the first 2 weeks off slow so we can get used to it. Its calculus, its not going to be easy. However if you work hard in her class its super possible to get an A. Has high expectations which could be good or bad depending on how you react to it.
Buy a 5 subject notebook for this class an expect to use the entire notebook for just this class. She gives so much extra credit that it's pretty hard to fail unless you don't try at all. I failed a test and still got an A because there was that much extra credit.
Tests are not that easy but offers extra credit on everything you do in the class. It is almost impossible not to walk out of the class with an A or B. My test average was an 80 and I could take a 0 on the final and still get an A in the class. Pal is kind of confusing but does her best to help you understand and truly cares about each student.
Pal offered a ton of extra credit that helped with my grade. Her tests are difficult and really test your understanding of the material. I was not a huge fan of her teaching style - her notes are messy and talks fast. Overall, she is a nice lady but be ready to study hard for her class!
Nice lady, tough grader. However she gives you 10 extra credit point opportunities on every quiz, and a 30 point extra credit quiz at the end of the semester. You basically have to try to fail
Pal has really high standards for her students' work. She expects a lot, but it makes you a much better student. Tests are awful, but her extra credit can save you, even if you do average in the 60's for exams.
She's a nice lady, but I didn't like her teaching style. Notes can be messy & she has an accent that's hard to get used to. Can get extra credit on the quizzes but the tests & quizzes are difficult & she's super nitpicky. Do the online homework, it's a huge grade booster. Final was super hard & lowered my B to a C. Good luck to all who take her
Really annoying and will give pop quizzes if a lot of people skip the same day
Pal is very nice and knows her material very well, but is not very good at teaching it to her students. There was extra credit on every quiz and exam, which boosted everyone's grades. If you do all of the homework and take notes on the material, getting an A isn't hard at all, but I would have rather had a worse grade with a better teacher.
Super hard class but the amount of extra credit is unreal. I never got better than a C on a test and managed a high A. Very thoughtful and cares about your success, insists she is your friend. Very unorganized with notes and class lectures.
Pal is super sweet, she makes jokes while teaching. But, she explains things different for every section so some sections get an advantage and some don't, she doesn't follow notes to guide her lectures and the notes she gives are sporadic. she does give tons of extra credit and is always willing to meet with you to discuss grades. her class is hard
She was impossible and unhelpful outside of class. During lecture she kept my attention and presented the information well enough but out side of that completely unavailable other than to tell me to go to the tutor, which I already was! She grades her quizzes and homework completely different than her tests so beware!!!
Avoid this professor. Teaching style is extremely disorganized. Grades are not available and the only way to calculate your current grade is to meet with her in person (rarely available) or to save all of your old tests and quizzes and calculate them manually. If taking this course, ignore lectures and learn subject strictly through textbook.
Extra Credit offered often but doesn't help much with the difficuly of quizes and tests. Quizes are every Friday with only 2 or 3 questions so get 1 wrong and you fail. Terrible teaching style and unmerciful grader.
She is a terrible teacher. The worse grader i the world. If you get her drop out and look for another teacher. A lot of extra credit but doesn't because she doesn't teach you. Be prepared to teach yourself
Each quiz is out of 10 points, but you can usually get a total of 13 or 14/10 because of extra credit (& an extra credit quiz at the end of the semester). The grading system is really weird - so if you do well on the quizzes (some are take-home) and do the online homework, you can have one bad test grade and still get an A or B
Pal is by far the worst professor Ive ever had. She does her lectures on a google doc and doesnt explain anything at all. Super disorganized and isnt accessible outside of class. She is the hardest grader and wont give you credit if you dont do the work her way. Extra credit doesnt even help on test and quizzes. Better off teaching yourself
Pal is easily the worst professor at Illinois State, possibly worst in the world. Her lectures make zero sense and her tests are near impossible to get a C on. Everyone in my calc 2 class literally failed. Some of the smartest people I know were in her class and couldn't pass. Avoid her. I cried so many tears over this class, and changed my major.
If you get in this class drop it. She is the worst professor at Illinois State. If you dont do the work the way she wants you to, you will not get any credit. She does give extra credit but it is not enough. She grades extremely hard and doesnt answer any questions in class. Do not take her class if you want to keep your GPA up.
This professor is unorganized and doesnt know how to teach a class. She teaches to a brick wall. She doesnt realize there is a class behind her. She doesnt interact with her students or answer questions. She knows the material but doesnt know how to teach it. If you want to struggle take her. But if you can avoid taking her class, do so.
Always vote for in class quizzes, if she gives take home, it will be impossible to earn full credit. She is very unorganized and hardly references the textbook. Online homework has nothing to do with the exams or quizzes. Very hard grader, expects paragraph answers for simple computational problems. Avoid if possible.
Really hard grader... getting the right answer is only half the battle. She takes calc and you feel like you are trying to be weeded out of the class which is not why I came to this school.
Pal is awful at explaining basic concepts and assumes the students have prior knowledge of concepts that are difficult. If you don't answer questions the EXACT way she wants, you'll be marked wrong. For example, I took a test and had mostly right answers (80% if I had to guess) but I received a 56, as I didn't write the answers the way she wanted.
She is terrible, she knows the material but can not convey it. She shows skipping steps making them almost useless since if you did this on a test youd lose half credit.
She teaches as if the students have already taken the class. She knows the material but she is terrible at explaining it. She is also very hard to understand at first. She does not calculate your grade so you have to calculate it yourself.
She is terrible, I could not understand anything she said during lecture, and she would give me a 0/10 on problems where I made a small error. I do not recommend her, take it with anyone else if you can.
As a completely honest review of pal, as a person she isn't terrible or anything. She is nice and will attempt to help you as best she can as long as you can ask. However, she does expect prior knowledge of Algebra, Trig, and precalc. Bottom line is, her tests aren't easy, expect yourself studying A LOT, and she wants answers written her way.
Terrible at teaching, of all my professors definitely the worst at teaching
Pal is the most aggressively condescending professor I've ever had. Tells you as long as your work is mathematically equivalent you get credit but then she takes off half credit for not doing it the way she expected despite the question not specifying. If you ask a question she often says you should know this and moves on. Avoid if you can.
Incredibly tough grader, you can get every question on a quiz right but if you don't put the steps exactly the way she wants it you will fail. Rude and condescending when you ask a question. Overall even if you are good at math avoid this teacher at all cost, save yourself from the unnecessary stress.
This is the worst professor I've ever had. I consider myself fair when ranking teachers but this teacher was actively detrimental to my learning. Correct answer but average work 0 points. She doesn't care at all if you got the right answers you must complete assignments to her standard and exact method. Final is rough because of this.
It saddens me to write that Pal is the worst instructor I have had in all my years of schooling. She teaches the class as if the students already know all the content, going way too fast for me to comprehend. She cancels class on multiple occasions for absurd personal reasons and enters students grades wrong in the grade book.
Would not take again her if my life depended on it. She didn't explain anything clearly and refused to compensate with her classmates. Her grading is HORRENDOUS. She says "explain" when you have no explaining to do or already explained it. She does this because she wants it done HER way. If you don't do it her way, your screwed. gg
An extraordinary teacher for an extraordinary hard class. She teaches the material very well, but if you aren't familiar with thick Indian accents, it can feel as if you don't learn anything. I reccomend seeing her during her office hours if possible. I had her Fall 2019 so before the pandemic. Perhaps avoid this class until you can do in-person.
If you have this professor drop immediately. This class is the most ridiculous math class I have ever taken. I did not know what my grade was until the day before the final. Tests were moved 2 days before they were supposed to be taken. She did not teach the material and would take off tons of points even if you get the right answer.
I've had Pal for 3 courses, Calc 1/2 and Linear Alg. She knows the material and what she needs to teach, her methods are not the best though. If you want credit, you need to do the work exactly how she has shown you. If you fall behind, meet with her. I passed a class with her after receiving a single digit % score on an exam. Be prepared to work.
Absolutely do not take this professor, drop if you have her right now. She is an extremely tough grader and does not work with her students.
She has a funny personality but that's where the good stops. Was graded based on 2 exams 5 quizzes and the final. If you take her class, don't, you better be brushed up on your algebra and trig because you are going to be doing more of that than calculus. she "does not believe in class average" (test average). the majority failed the first exam.
She's VERY particular on her grading if you have never taken calc before this class will push you. She was somewhat understanding for the first all-person semester but I don't think that will last much longer. She wasn't understanding to those who missed and doesn't post lectures online. I didn't think she was an awful professor but she wasnt great
Run while you still can. Proof that course evals do not work. Beyond worst I have ever had. Must show every single step of work meticulously. Didn't do it her way? Get ready for a 0/10. Writes "Explain" on tests despite no need. You'd think getting the right answer would be enough. Wrong. I turned my quizzes and exams over to the Math Dept. Chair.
I feel that Pal gets a bad wrap as a professor. While her class was difficult, I really enjoyed it. She is well-paced in her lectures, posts all her notes online, and only has a hand full of hw assignments all of which are pretty easy and a great grade buffer. Just do the problems as she would and you'll be ok (since she can be a picky grader).
I had her for MAT 145 and 146. I got a C in 145 and dropped 146 because I didn't want another C. She is terrible at explaining things and grades tests/quizzes very hard if it is not done her way. Tests are next to impossible and even tutoring didn't help. I can tell she cared about her students she is just not able to teach well at all.
Dr. K can be a funny and nice teacher to have, but most of the time she requires you to do your work in the exact way that she does it. So not only is there a learning curve because of her accent but you also have to adjust to her style of teaching and grading. Overall would say if possible take another teacher.
Do not take this class. Yes, you can pass, but she is very degrading. I lost my dad to a stroke and she would not offer any makeups for the time I missed. She vaguely responds to emails and will make you feel awful about asking her questions. Please choose a different professor. ISU needs to reevaluate Pal
Pal is a capable instructor, however she can be unsympathetic toward slower learners. I would consider Pal's class a "calculus for math and science majors only" course. If you like math and are good at it, you will likely survive Pal's Calc II course, otherwise, you should switch professors or consider holding off taking Calc II.
Subtracted 19 points out of 90 for not doing it HER way.
I LOVED Dr. K. Her class is very difficult, and she likes math written correctly. As a result, she does grade extremely hard. Just study her notes to see how she likes it done, and you will be all set. She also provides tons of extra credit, by the end of the year we had a total of approx.150 points of extra credit. She also grades really fast.
I've always enjoyed math and that's probably why I liked her class. She moves pretty fast, but there is a lot of opportunity for extra practice and help outside of class. A LOT of homework, quizzes every week, big exams. We had a lot of extra credit opportunities though. She's tough on notation so pay attention to exactly how she does things.
I LOVED Dr. K this semester. She was super nice and she loves her students like so much. She is super accessible outside class and she gives a lot of extra credit. You have to put in the work and she wants you to show your work on tests, but the extra credit and homework keep your grade up if you mess up. You can tell she cares about her students.
I think Dr. K gets a bad rap, but I actually didn't mind her course. She teaches very thoroughly, although she does have a lot of out of class work. ALL her questions are from old classwork/homework, so study those. She also gives tons of extra credit to pad your grade for the final, so I only had to get a 30% to keep an A.
Difficult class and can move very fast if you have never taken a calc class before, weekly quizzes with not many problems. Dr. K is really nice and will do anything to help you as long as you are willing to help yourself. Loads of extra credit to really help balance out your grade. If you do decide to have her as an instructor be ready to work!
Dr. K deserves a higher rating. She truly cares about her students' success. There is a lot of homework and weekly quizzes so be prepared to do the work. Her test questions are from past quizzes, homework assignments, and lectures (use the study guides). She offers a ton of extra credit and is available during her office hours for extra help.
Would recommend this class if you are a math person and pick up on material easily. Make sure you show your work very thoroughly on tests and quizzes and pay attention to the proper notation. Dr. K has high expectations but I think she makes that clear in the beginning. Lots of extra credit available as long as you understand the material.
A tough professor but she will help you succeed if you are willing to put in the work. She posts all lecture notes online and gives lot of take home work to practice what you learned. You have to be willing to work hard. Her expectations are high but she is fair in my opinion. Great professor and very thorough with lecture notes.
Dr. K is one of my favorite professors ever! Show all of your work for good grades. She gives a lot of extra credit (a whole letter grade). Most of the quizzes are take home. She always posts the notes after lecture, and is always willing to help students during office hours. Calc 2 is a hard course in general, but Dr. K makes it very doable.
After taking MAT145 with her, she was good up too spring break: then afterwards everything tanked. She rushed lectures, barley goes over anything over on the homework, only gives you at most three problems in class and makes you want to learn everything by yourself. This is a class I would not recommend for anyone.
Dr. K is an incredibly tough grader with absolutely impossible criteria to meet, and she expects you to be able to remember all of the previous info you learned in math classes to a t. She offers lots of extra credit every single semester, which proves that her students do not do well enough to pass on average on their own. Avoid this professor.
She is definitely a tough teacher, but If you show up to class and do the work, you will pass. She cares about you learning the material, and she is very friendly. I do not think I would have passed calc. if I didn't have her as my instructor. It will seem rough at first, but she will do her best to get you to pass.
She grades incredibly harshly, using metrics not traditionally used in math classes. Also, she's awful at teaching, and makes fun of students for asking questions. Awful teacher.
The best Professors ever, you just need to attend class and show that you care about learning the material.
She is a good professor. It is a very tough class. Her teaching style is decent, I would say it's not great because I have had to learn a lot outside of class despite having 4 classes a week. She is a VERY VERY tough grader. Do not expect any partial credit, or at least not a lot. She does give extra credit a lot, and that is great.
She is a very kind woman and clearly cares a lot for her students. Funny person and pretty good teacher. The hardest grader of all time though. You have to fight for a good grade in the class but it is achievable. Overall good experience but my god she loves to take points off for minuscule stuff
She is a tough professor but very willing to help outside of class. I really enjoyed her teaching, though the class was very difficult I never dreaded coming to class. She is pretty funny and obviously wants students to succeed, though her grading can make that seem contradictory at times. To help though, there's extra credit and study guides.
DO NOT take her class if you want to pass calculus. She assigned an obscene amount of homework and quizzes for a 4-credit class. She's also a very tough grader and takes off points for solving problems using different methods. The pace of the class is very fast, and you have to teach yourself a lot. Also, she doesn't review material for exams.
Harsh grader. I got ever answer correct on the first exam but got a 73% because I showed my work incorrectly somehow. The second exam I got a 50% and only had 2 answers wrong. She gave a lot of extra credit at the end of the semester because I think she knew everyone was failing. Would never take a class with her again.
Dr. K is a very kind professor who teaches a hard course. She will help anyone willing to ask for help, so if you're struggling, DON'T WAIT. You NEED to study outside of class, and though she can be a hard grader at times, she gives lots of opportunities for extra credit. Go to TA office hours whenever you can, don't skip, and you'll do fine.
So funny and fun to be around, she's willing to help you if you ask for help and she gets to know everyone. Definitely one of my favs.
This was, without a doubt, the worst professor I have ever had at this school. While, there is no doubt that she's extremely knowledgable in her field, however she has absolutely no teaching skills. I almost never received full credit on a test question, the questions were 10 points each. I now have to retake the class and my love for math is gone.
Outside of being a friendly and an approachable professor. Dr K is a extremely tough grader. Do not expect full credit on questions even if the work and answers are correct. She marks off for very minor things. Luckily, her tests are taken directly from the study guide.
I LOVED Dr. K!! She cares deeply for all of her students. Weekly homework and biweekly quizzes. Sometimes, the quizzes are take-home or group quizzes. For the test, she gives clear expectations on what needs to be shown. Tests are very similar to her study guides—test corrections. Show up to class. I would definitely take her again in the future!
Dr. K has a reputation for being a tough grader, but as long as you show every step, you can get the question wrong and still get the majority of the points. Many of my classmates who complained about her grading just didn't show their work properly. Besides that, Dr. K is very receptive during her lectures and really cares about students' success.
I never thought I would ever right a review on this app. That was until I took this class with Dr.K. That's how you know it was bad. This class was the hardest class ever because of Dr.K and I'm literally pre-dental and took Organic Chemistry. My girlfriend is pre-med took calc, goes to another school and confirmed it was most definitely the prof.
absolutely awful for anyone not in a math major. often gave me 0/10 points on quizzes bc i did an extra step that slightly affected my answer. no exaggeration. could teach the content well enough but unless u could read her mind by doing exactly what she was looking for on tests in terms of steps & answer formatting, u won't get more than a 50%
Worst teacher. Run! She is rude to students and will take of 3 points out of 10 if you forget an equal sign or a step. It is worth taking somewhere else or with anyone else. She would pull students chairs if she thought they weren't paying attention. 8-10 pm exams every 3 weeks will not take work as an excuse for missing or sickness. RUN!!!!!!
Dr. K's MAT145 is a challenging course, but with diligence and using resources like Unstuck study, it's doable. The grading is tough, but she cares about students learning. Attend class, do the work, and you'll likely pass.
Stay away if taking for credit. Tough grader who cares more about her style than it being the correct answer. Makes accommodations for herself but is very stern to students needs. Be prepared to dedicate your semester to this class over any of your other classes. Would never take again
The class was challenging, Dr. K is a harsh grader but at the same time you can tell she cares about students. Mohammed the TA was very helpful.
I took this class in F23 (WX) and S24 (A+). My advice that helped me S24 is to study for every single quiz. If you do good on the weekly quizzes you will do good on the tests. NEVER miss class and NEVER miss assignments. This class turns into a good learning exp and actually not hard if you do both of those things. This will be your hardest class.
Not good at teaching
Do not choose this professor. She was an incredibly nitpicky grader who constantly changed her grading criteria. She forgot when quizzes were, and she was inaccessible outside class. I will say that she was not one of the best professors that I had. Attendance in this class was also mandatory, not the worst thing, but hard to manage well.
Dr. K will either be the best or worst professor you have - but it depends on you. She is kind and wants all her students to succeed, but she's strict. She's clear about what she wants and will take off points for not giving her exactly that. Study guides are exactly like the exams. Quizzes are often take home. There are ways to do well with Dr. K.
Took her twice, did bad the first time, got an A second time. She's a good teacher if you go to class. 146 is a really difficult class but if you study a lot it won't be. Study for all the quizzes and you should be fine. The first few tests are harder than the last few because you will understand the material. GO TO CLASS
Don't take if you can't handle and Indian professor with a thick accent who also expects you to know how to do everything because “it's just algebra” . You do hw assignments on things you haven't learned then learn them the next day plus your expected to do a different curriculum then everyone else in MAT 145 while doing start of calc 2 questions.
There were two fallen angels from heaven — the Devil and this professor.
Calc 1 with Dr.K was great! Her class can be challenging, but she provides so much extra credit, extends deadlines if you ask, and makes most the quizzes take home. I was able to get an A in her class by doing the HW, coming to class, and doing the study guides. Sometimes she will put the exact same questions from the study guides on the exams.
3-10m late ~every day and then she went over every day cramming new topic at the end. Class was a mess the whole time. It was hard to be a student. She gave a ton of extra credit so we would pass. Taught myself a lot. Not many good options for MAT160 other than pulley. First time teaching it. Assigns 30 problems grades 3. github for book answers
