Pam is very nice and open, and it's apparent what she does is what she thinks is best for her students. However, her teaching style is very specific and I can see how a majority of her students can get become lost. Powerpoints are fill in the blank; that's the most troubling part. You fill in the blanks then miss ALL the explanations. It's tough.
In her class right now and honestly Im impressed. W/ COVID, she's made very appropriate changes to the way she runs her class. She has everything planned out and all the materials are super accessible on brightspace. I watch all the lectures online and print out her guided notes. You do have to pay attention, but she is available to help outofclass
This is the first time Pam has taught this class and it shows. Lectures are long, boring, and rushed through. Homework do not correlate with exams very much and she never will let you know what the exam contents are. Fill in the blank notes are not a way to learn stats. Currently taking the class and it sucks.
This is the first time this class has been taught (Fall of 2021). Note there is no extra credit given our nor are the exams curved. However, the grading scale is fairly lenient (90-100 A). There are two lectures per week and they are fill-in-the-blank slides. Her lectures were all over the place at the beginning of the semester.
Lectures are very disorganized and she only shares parts of the notes on brightspace (leaves blanks for all of the important terms and formulas), the rest she only shows in lecture class. Recitations are not helpful, moreso a pain.
The layout of the course is completely disorganized and confusing. The slides are never imported correctly; thus, leaving out important content. The recitations and homework help absolutely zero with the exams.
I would never, ever recommend taking her class for any reason. She has no proper teaching method; you must mostly teach yourself to understand the majority of the material. The exam material is also never clear.
Class was super messy, but it was the first run of the class, so it might be better organized next time. She can explain things alright, but there's so much to cover that she can't take enough time to go over everything thoroughly. I bet she'll get a lot of low ratings, but she's not awful, the content is just difficult and there's a lot to cover.
awful way to learn statistics. Fill in the blank slides with an overload of unnecessary information. never does helpful examples. She sets the class up by the number of lectures given not by chapter so 3 lectures could cover one chapter. She also never gets through the lecture. Talks way too much making it impossible to focus. Homework not helpful
This class is fun if you like stats and really teaches you ways to think about probability in ways you haven't before. Highly recommend.
She is a sweet lady, but all material is in a mess. And it feels impossible to focus, you need to fill in the blank while listen, super distracting.
She's really nice but it doesn't translate to the lectures that draw on for endless minutes. I wish she used more examples and would refrain from spitting equations at students that will forget them right away. Massive blocks of texts on slides and she doesn't post the finished slides which is a pain if you take handwritten notes. Find someone else
Professor Porterfield is nice, but doesn't always grasp how much material can fit in a lecture. Granted, it was a new course when I took it, but the material & course itself was fairly disorganized. The full lectures slides are never posted, so if you miss lecture, doing homework is difficult. This class was more effort than it should have been.
She is a very knowledgeable professor. The course content is all over the place. She doesn't explain very well how the concepts connect, so it seems like you're learning a bunch of random content. I personally don't enjoy that the lecture slides are fill in the blank and filled out slides are not uploaded to brightspace.
The lectures that she gives are completely useless. Be prepared to learn all the material on your own.
Lectures are terrible and class is structured very poorly.
She talks about using excel in the exam review when the exam is in-person...
Awful lectures. Most strict proffessor at Purdue.
Horribly structured, material in lectures and homework is not similar to exams. Learn everything on your own.
I took the summer 2022 class of this course and i don't think she's that bad of a teacher, maybe because this is a new course and she might've done bad for previously, but the lectures for summer 2022 was organized pretty well, and the exams did not have anything that was out of the lectures as some has commented.
I like her course, because she put everything like homework due in the calendar of the brightspace so that I won't forget any homework or quiz like other class. The conception is clear in the PDF she give us, so I always do a good review before the test!
None of the concepts connect, fill in blank lecture slides are not helpful to students in order to understand anything other than basic definitions. Exams are nothing like the review or homework. This does not feel like an introductory class to statistics and does a poor job of effectively teaching students concepts.
Only has online office hours and is very rude if you are confused about a previous concept. The 3 exams take up most of your grade and are short answer tests.
Introduction to statistics should not be a difficult class. My best advice is to make sure you understand everything by studying the material each week. Attending lectures won't help because she does not explain how to do anything. Porterfield is a great person, just not professor. Take this class somewhere else.
Pam is a nice person, but she is not a very good professor. The class is pretty tough, so make sure to do lots of practice problems (I used youtube videos and did the problem before they worked through it). Her lectures are boring and she does a bad job explaining the concepts.
She was a very kind professor when I had questions to ask. I took this in the Spring of 22, so halfway through we were forced to switch to online due to her personal problems, but she made it her duty to help as much as she could. Exams were difficult, Recitations had nothing to do with content, but Homework was incredibly helpful
Attendance wasn't required, but Pam uses fill-in-the-blank lectures to force you to go. The material should be pretty easy, just make sure not to fall behind.
Professor Porterfield is an extremely nice person, but her class is difficult. Her lectures do not really help with much of the homework or the exams. It seems like there is no good way to study for the exams, and the content of the exams does not really seem to come from anywhere. If you have background in statistics, the class might come easy.
Professor Porterfield is not lenient at all with late work and is a harsh grader. There are lecture quizzes each week in recitation and an activity that is due at midnight that day so try to have an earlier section if you need more time to complete that. Exams were pretty difficult- homework was not like the test.Try to get a good TA!
This class is the worst class I've ever taken. She uses fill in the blank lecture slides to get you to go to class. She doesn't teach the content and goes over it way too fast. There is no extra credit and there are quizzes every week in recitation. She doesn't explain content well and will make you rely on your TA. Try to get a good TA if you can.
If you're taking stat 30301, make sure you have a really good TA with your recitation because Pam is not a good professor. The fill in the blank slides are ridiculous and the homework and study guides are nothing like the exams. Majority of the assignments are done with excel, yet you can't use excel on the exams. Show up to lecture and recitation.
She barely teaches, and the fill-in-the-blank slides are really not great for learning at all. I ended up skipping lecture because I was extremely sick, and she didn't even give me a Powerpoint! Just a recording of the class so that I could fill out the Powerpoint. You only get one absence and it doesn't matter if it's excused or unexcused.
She's super nice but her lectures themselves are average. I never learned anything from her lectures and her exam review sessions are not helpful at all. I got a higher grade in the supposedly harder continuation of this class. If you can take this with someone else, do it, otherwise be prepared to teach yourself the content.
Not a good professor, too much work assigned without any considerations. Not really great at explaining. TA were very helpful and nice. Take this class with someone else if yoy can.
This class is not too good. If you were great at AP stats, things will be great but if not, this class is difficult. The average on our second exam was a 67. She emphasizes the use of Excel but we can't actually use it on exams so it's conflicting. I recommend watching the prerecorded lecture videos instead of boilercast or going to class.
This class was awful. Test heavy meaning if you don't do well on the majority of the tests, you're basically screwed. Took this class twice; once online and once in person which made no difference. I had someone in AP stats try to help me understand the concepts and they said the way this class is explained makes no sense.
She sets you up to fail. I did fine, but the tests are not a measure of your intelligence, they are a measure of your ability to rapidly regurgitate information on your sheet. If the professor is somehow reading this, allow more time for test or shorten them, I know students who studied for hours and hours and knew the material who failed.
Pam Porterfield is by far the most awful professor I have ever had. She does NOT care about her students. She doesn't know how to teach and her recitations and lecture questions have nothing to do with the exam. She does not give out past exams to study from and the reviews she does give out do not help at all when taking the test. No EXTRA Credit
No forgiveness whatsoever in this class. Nice lady, but the class is made way more difficult than it needs to be.
I have had my fair share of bad profs in my life, but she makes it difficult to learn. The lecture slides have blanks which means if you take notes slowly, you will miss critical information. I have taught myself more by watching videos and reading the book than I have learned from lectures and recitation. The exams have way too many questions.
Have you ever wanted to teach yourself how to do statistics? Yes? Well, then you should take this course! Good luck finding any guidance on homework. An example problem? No way!!! Also, be prepared for 3 exams to be more than 60% of your grade. Avoid Pam's class if you can!
Lectures felt like her stating information rather than truly explaining it. Prof. Porterfield is notorious for gatekeeping resources, such as complete lecture slides or answers to review problems. You get to make a cheat sheet for exams though. To (barely) succeed, take time out of class to work on understanding the material.
You just have to go to class, and she covers all the content you need to know for the exams. It is also super helpful to do + understand her exam reviews and come to class with questions. Honestly, if you do that and attempt the homework (multiple attempts) you'll be fine getting a good grade in the class. Do need to put in time outside of class.
To be honest, I think she is a very nice. It's important to master the content of each lecture. You need to understand well the contents of the PowerPoint slides, both concepts and calculations. The assignments are not very difficult; Exams have a larger weight (60%), but if you master each assignment and LQ, it is very possible to score above 90%.
The worst professor one could ask for has no empthy for students. I was 15 mins late for the exam at 7:30 am and she didn't let me take the exam and gave a zero even when she knew I was unwell. That says a lot about a person, this is the first time I saw a professor being happy about failing there own students. Its like she wants to fail students
She cannot properly explain concepts and instead lectures are simply her stating information off of slides. Notes are taken in the form of slides with blanks that you are to fill in. So if you happen to miss a blank, boo-hoo because she does not give access to the completed lecture slides. Avoid if you can or hope you get a good TA!
She can't explain concepts at all. If you haven't taken statistics before you will be confused and if you miss a concept and don't ask within the week, she will be no help at all. Excel is used on everything except the tests so it's difficult to know how to do topics without it. Take it with someone else.
Professor Pam will set you up for success!! I learned so many cool things about statistics in this class. There are a lot of resources if you are willing to put in the effort. Rewatching the recorded lectures is very very useful. The negative is that recitation feels like just copying down what the TA says which is kind of pointless.
Awful. Avoid this prof like your life depends on it. She can't explain any concept and anything she explains ends up 10 times more confusing. I have never been more lost in class or on a topic. Her exams are unnecessary hard and long. I don't know how she is still employed.
Does not remotely prepare you for the exams. All study material is far easier than exam material. Very strict on submission deadlines, even when you are sick or have a valid excuse.
Professor Porterfield is very helpful, especially in office hours. She is the nicest and most caring professor I've had. She opens the hw weeks in advance and lets everyone know beforehand there are no extensions. This is not an easy course. She provides lecture recordings and daily office hours, and there are tons of resources online to succeed.
Reads straight off the slides. She does not prepare you well for exams at all. The exams are extremely difficult and take the hardest things we learned to put on the test. Excel activities were graded extremely harsh. Only two attempts on each homework question so homework grades aren't high to help with the harsh grading.
Made you use blank lecture slides as notes. She did not allow anyone to take pictures of the lecture slides because she believed it was a violation of "copyright." She was not engaging at all. Kept us late during lecture more often than we got out on time. Recitations were not helpful either. Good luck.
The tests were horrible and she made them hard.
I took this class online, so no clue how to do excel activities. Not allowed to go to in-person recitations because "the roof may fall in." Sentiment towards her is validated by her treatment of students- made one cry. I completed the evaluation weeks before due, submitted it a few hours late and she took 50%. (due finals week) Good luck with her.
Very lecture heavy, long and extensive, mostly never gets out on time. In addition, recitation is utterly useless, TA doesn't help or always says "I think so," then grades poorly after realizing what they said was wrong. I would not recommend this class.
Went to the professor after my TA said that all 500+ exams were graded in less than 5 hours, meaning there would be mistakes. I asked if she could walk through the exam with me, after not having a pencil out before we even sat down, she told me that I was only there for the points and nothing else. I just wanted help to prepare for the next exam.
Who teaches a Statistics class with fill in the blank notes?
Stay away, she makes class harder than it needs to be.
Porterfield is lovely but the class is boring, overcomplicated and annoying. The TA's try their best but it's hard when the class is taught so weirdly. The homework is irrelevant to the class.
THE WORST!!!!
She just reads off lecture slides. I learned more outside of the class on my own than in lectures. Be prepared for many of the short-response questions on the exams. She also doesn't curve the course, even if the class average is really low.
Shes the only professor for this class. GOOD LUCK. This is the worst taught class ive ever been apart of. NO CURVES
Homeworks make no sense, no curves and the majority of info I learned was outside of class. The class is so hard for no reason, I went to every lecture and most of it was confusing and redundant. She runs class until the very last minute. She is lovely I just think the class is structured horribly.
the exams are very hard and the the lecture slide does NOT help. Recitation is also a waste of time.
this is the worst professor at purdue.
This class has no reason to be this hard. Only reads the lecture slides, don't explain the concepts that well. No curves
its a stats class yet all she does is read off the slides and then the recitation is all about excel not actually learning the material. The reviews are nothing like the exams. The lectures slides are not updated from the previous semester. No exam corrections posted so there is no way to learn what you did wrong. GOOD LUCK
So bad at explaining the concepts. Going to lecture is a waste of time because I don't learn anything.
She really just doesn't seem to care about how well the class is understanding the material. Her lectures are very boring and the labs don't help you understand the material on the exams. She doesn't post completed slides and doesn't make it easy to find exam material.
she might genuinely be the worst teacher I've had in my life, she actually cannot teach, the content is not hard but it's confusing when you have to teach yourself the entire course.she doesn't curve her exams while also teaching nothing in lecture is crazy. can't even avoid her either, she's the only one who teaches this class. HIRE SOMEONE NEW!
The tests are indifferent from the material taught in lecture and the material given for homework. This makes the course slightly frustrating, but if that may be how Education is, then so be it.
The class is kinda in a weird spot. There are lots of free points in the excel activities and hw. But, the exams felt overly hard due to the vast amount of content they cover. Additionally, there was no emphasis put on helping students understand why we're doing each test and what it means in context so overall understanding seemed low.
Nice person, but her exams can be difficult. Useful subject
Porterfield is a nice person who keeps her students updated on Brightspace. The subject is important and the class material reflects this. HW's and ExcelActivities take time and consideration to complete. Personally, I felt there were a few curveballs thrown at me during the Exams that I wasn't totally prepared for.
Useful class
professor is very nice, but content is not explained very well. only one homework assignment every week.homework is also very easy and clear, then you take the exam and the questions are 10x harder. there is also recitation once a week which is completely useless. you just work on excel and the exams and homework have no excel use at all, poor setup
Professor Porterfield is fantastic. Unfortunately, some students who struggled with the course choose to leave negative reviews online, even though it's an easy class for those who put in the effort. Stay clear of those students, as their negative attitude and poor work ethic can be contagious.
Anyone who gives porterfield more than 1 star is her herself. Genuinely the worst professor I have ever had, and you can't even escape her. Lectures are fill in the blank notes, for statistics…that just doesn't work. Exams are insanely different from homework, I know more hard working students who just failed out than students that actually passed.
She's writing false reviews to make her rating higher
I was incredible at AP Stats in high school and had an amazing teacher so I feel adequately qualified to say that Pam is not a good stats prof. I had to help multiple friends with the material and our average on exams was consistently very bad. Already having done AP stats was the only reason I did well. If you have to take this class, sorry.
I SOMEHOW GOT AN A+ THROUGH THIS CLASS, I SAT THERE STUDYING FOR HOURS ON END! #PAMSUCKS
Prof Porterfield was pretty nice as a person, but I never found her lectures helpful; the class itself seemed disorganized, and the homework assignments don't adequately prepare anyone for exams. I had to teach myself the content through Khan Academy and online resources. The material in this class is helpful but it should be taught differently.
Easily one of the worst professors I have had in my 3 semesters here. I have not met anyone who liked her, and 99% of people doing well in this class is no thanks to her. who the heck does fill in the blank notes for a stats class. barely managed a B in this class solely by spending around 30 hours studying for the final.
Fantastic professor!
Blatant slander won't help anyone, so here we are: If you are sick, in an accident, have interviews, expect to lose points. No help at all. What to do? Gear up to study for yourself. The sample exams are a good indicator for what you will see on the exam, so master every problem. AI is your best TA in this class, the faculty is basically useless.
Professor Pam is amazing! She really knows her stuff and always make sure you understand what's going on, especially when it comes to help you preparing for exams. Super approachable and always there to help you succeed.
First off, Pam stop writing your own reviews enough is enough. Second off terrible class stay away from it as long as you can
Awesome professor!
I just genuinely do not think that Porterfield is good at teaching and therefore the class was so much harder than it should have been. Additionally, her grading system is flawed and so even though I did well on assignments, activities, and exams, it was still a STRUGGLE to get the grade that I did. Go to recitation!!!
I am just happy I passed the class. I think she cares about the subject and about teaching but she is not very good at it. Homework takes forever, and the labs have nothing to do with the class. Exams were the worst part, only an hour to do 40 questions each needing their own formula. Even with a study guide, it was nearly impossible for me.
The bane of my existence. Statistics just doesn't have to be as hard as she makes this class. We had problems on the exams that we had literally never seen before and it screwed me over. Never accessible outside of class other than to tell you to "ask the TA's". She gave an exam on Election Day despite the school telling the professors not to.
Words cannot describe how much I despise her.
she will NOT curve
Lovely person, but awful teacher
Has a serious case of Resting Witch Face
Horrible, exam on election day, not enough time to complete exams, very low exam averages, refuses to curve, was .001 off on a homework question and she would not even give me half credit.
those leaving positive reviews are ones who got perfect scores in AP Stats, if you have never taken AP Stats you are doomed, an intro to stats class was not enough to do well. find a group in your recitation to work on the excel with, to do well on the homework it needs to be looked up. everything is excel based, while the exam is not.
I think in all my life I have to say this was by far the worst professor I have ever had in my life.
Having homework due the night before an exam and learning a new topic the day of is not ideal. Students are trying to study and prepare for a midterm while having to worry about all of this other work at the same time.
Pam Porterfield is the reason tenure shouldn't exists. I've never heard anyone say 1 good thing about her class. Lectures: Fill in the blank slides (like that's helpful) Homework: Doesn't relate to lecture material whatsoever. Recitation: God help you the TA won't speak English and it's a waste of time. WORST CLASS EVER. DO NOT TAKE.
she didnt curve when the exam average was below 70. succeeding in class is genuinely difficult
Makes learning statistics more difficult than it should be.
My best advice is skip lecture and just read the book, only way you'll do well in the class
Worst prof. Ever
only chance you make it out alive is if you took AP STAT in highschool
How did I survive this class lol.
she hates her job so she hates us
One day I'll be out of this course :(
very inconsiderate and unhelpful didnt even really try to give me an extension on the exam when i had mono and said if i did i would get penalized wtf is that
Exams are 30 questions in 60 minutes, including showing your work/explaining your reasoning. Impossible to finish in the time allotted. The first exam might go fine but the second exam is something different. Exam practice sheets are barely helpful. Exam review slideshow is entirely irrelevant to the exams, focus on textbook.
Pam is nice but terrible at teaching. Her slides are vague and don't match the exams, which are much more detailed. If you haven't taken AP Stats before or don't have a graphing calculator, you'll struggle. The textbook is your best resource and make sure you read everything. Also do the hw and excel as it gives grade boosts. Take ONLY if you need!
Her tests are really difficult, and she does not curve for some reason.
Easy content made difficult by a subpar professor. She's nice, but her slides are fill-in-the-blank and she never finishes her lectures on time. I'm only succeeding because I took AP stats.
i hate this class. her slides are fill-in-the-blank style, and she can't lecture in a timely manner. Half of each class is going over what she was supposed to lecture about last class, and the last half is for the content you were supposed to cover today. Practice exams are useless and don't provide an accurate picture of what the exams look like.
Gotta be the worst teacher I've ever had. Only person I have ever interacted with that talks in 0.75x speed and has a voice that makes me want to bang my head on a wall. Lectures were brutal, she teaches a stats class with fill in the blank slides. Recitation was useless because it's excel and you don't use excel on the exams. She needs to be fired
Took this class three times and still got a C, maybe its a me thing but I know I am not the only one who took three tries.
The only reason I have the grade I do is because I ignored everything she said and used my old AP Stats and Econ 260 notes. Excel activities and homework are completely irrelevant to the exams but take forever. Literally cannot explain ANYTHING well and uses fill in the blank notes. Exam are a struggle to complete
Doesn't curve an exam even if the average is in the 50s. Insanely chinese TA's that I can never understand.
Don't listen to head, read the book it's your best friend in the course. She can't explain anything so It's always good to just look at the book.
She is a very bad professor. She does fill in the blank slides which does not help. She will not curve an exam that is 50 percent or lower. She will give reviews that do not help on the exams as well. The homework and recitation are just busy work that do not actually help. I stopped going to recitation because my TA useless.
Worst professor ever do not take this class. It is because like a independent study because she does nothing useful for you to learn.
this course put me in depression does not curve her exams, exams are nothing like the practice ones and lectures are so boring AVOID
Makes the course a lot more challenging then it should be, makes mistakes in lecture and in notes all the time. No curves or extra credit on exams. The EA and homework assignments are free points but you have to lock in on the exams or your pretty much ducked.
Why. Just why. Makes stats so much harder than it needs to be. 66% of your grade is exams. There is absolutely no turning in late work. She doesn't get the concept that her students have lives outside of her class. Gave an exam on Election Day even though the university advised professors not to, so I wasn't able to get to the polls and vote.
Oh man! This class was something. Definition on why tenure shouldn't exist
She is very sweet but this course is so dragged out and so much of the content taught is unnecessary. 60% of the grade is exams and its all math questions that were taught in the most dragged out and laborious way. Just practice a lot of questions and start early if u are taking this class.
I took AP Stats in high school and still did not get an A. Lectures are abysmal. At the end of the year, only 30ish people came to lecture because they were so bad. Would recommend watching the lecture videos instead of going in person. Hard to get through tests in time. Study by doing the homework. She is a nice person, but not a good professor.
Pam Porterfield is the sole reason tenure should not exist. I have no words
Yeah bro she's not great at all, class is terribly run and TAs all grade differently depending on their mood. Would say avoid her like the plague but Purdue has decided that she's the only one capable of teaching this course so until then good luck if you didn't take AP Stats
Easily the worst professor I've had. Exam practice questions are irrelevant, especially on the second exam. Get ready to read to survive.
Pam rambles a lot with her examples which are incomparable to homework. She consistently exceeds the class time. Her exams are NOTHING like the practice exams. EA's are not helpful and tedious. No curve even though the exam averages are around 50%. Recitations are useless. TA's have no idea what is going on and what Pam is doing. AVOID THIS CLASS!!
She is the worst stats teacher at the school. Really tough grader and do not expect her to curve anything even when the class averages on tests are super low. Her tests hard and contain lots of stuff not on the reviews.
The online class grading is split into five sections. Homework is worth 20%, lecture questions worth 4%, Excel activities worth 15%, exams worth 60%, and the course eval worth 1%. Homework and Excel activities have virtually nothing to do with the exams, except for the concepts. Don't take the online version if you don't have to. AP Stats helps.
Pam, this class made me question every decision I have ever made in my entire life. To call this class unorganized would be generous because of how hard it was to access useful material. A 6 year old boy could teach better then Pam Porterfield. Spend your lecture time doing something useful rather then attending this atrocity.
Worst academic experience of my life bro. Hate ts
Awful, Just awful.
Pam stop writing reviews about yourself
How is she still employed? This is genuinely the worst academic experience of my life. No professors average GPA should be below a 2.3... No amount of studying can prepare you
I got an A because I took AP Stats in high school. Homework and Recitation are beyond pointless and achieve nothing in helping you succeed in the class. It would be smart to learn the material on your own outside of lectures and hope that prepares you for the Exams.
Pam Porterfield is the worst professor I have had in all 14 years of school so far. While she doesn't seem like a bad person, she should never have been given a teaching position. Her lectures are close to useless and her homework do not at all prepare you for the exams. You are better off learning the material yourself -try to take over the summer
As others have said, the lectures are worthless and so is her teaching skills. Your TA has a good chance of barely speaking English. She will require you to know formula that SHE NEVER TAUGHT and only appears on practice problems. Her study sheets and practice is useless. You're best bet is to try to get a previous students exams.
I actually liked Pam. She is good at teaching the concepts, uses examples, and is more than willing to help during office hours (which I utilized several times). The exams are difficult and are in a "new setting" as she would say. As a result, the homework and exam review help reinforce the concepts but are not in the same setting as the exam.
This is the worst class I've ever taken. She is a nice person, but cannot teach. Read the textbook and do the homework to study. Excel Activities are pointless. It's hard to get through exams in time. Doesn't curve even when averages are in the 50s. Worst lecturer I've ever had, skip class and watch the videos instead. Has fill in the blank notes
Prof. Porterfield is a horrendous teacher. I took AP statistics in high school and can say for sure that her explanations and examples are lacking in many ways. Fill in the blank notes are terrible for teaching stats and her example slides essentially require you to have touch screen or a mouse to copy down. Skip lecture, get the slides from video.
I would say what makes her such a bad professor is her lack of awareness. She thinks that her style of teaching with fill in the blank notes is beneficial. I think she truely believes that she is a good teacher but is actully horrible. The recitation also is useless and you may be stuck with a very poor TA. Read the book and use other reasources
It is day 2 of lecture and one of her examples she used is simply not correct. The only reason I know this is because I took AP Stats. I don't even know what to do with this
Idk if pam means well, I failed the class and had to retake it which sucked. I took the online section and I found the book was 1000x better than going to lecture. I don't think she's a good lecturer and the added stress of failed a class really sucked but it worked out cause reading the book actually helped me learn. Binomials shouldn't be hard :(
Ended the year w 89.5 and rounded to a B. Good luck.
Oh boy! Don't even get me started on this class. I would AVOID this class and take it online through another school. She expects an hour is enough time to finish an exam with 30 questions. Don't mind the positive reviews, as those are definitely not from students. I hope this review helps in 10+ years because she will definitely still be teaching!
It's so so bad.
She does not set her students up for success at all. Exams are incredibly difficult and she purposely gives harder curveball questions that are worded/presented differently than the practice problems and homework, so when you get to the exam you're clueless. Lectures and slides are also useless and she doesn't curve exams.
Just took the second exam today. Genuinely what was that. You could spend hours doing the practice problems and even study in the most efficient way yet still the exam is basically designed for you to not succeed whatsoever. Walked out of this exam today in absolute shock. She is ok as a person but as lecturer, good lord.
Class is 60% exam. No examples in class lectures so when it is test time, you don't know how to use the 20 different formulas you have to use. She pretty much prays on your downfall...
I have never met a more incompetent person in my life. Exam 2 was a mess and no where near enough time to answer the 25, paragraph long, questions in one hour. Her lectures are not only unhelpful but what she manages to get out is completely incorrect. She has got to go. Avoid at all costs
avoid avoid avoid avoid avoid (also TAs get personal satisfaction from seeing you fail)
This has genuinely been the worst class I have ever taken at Purdue. Pam's lectures are hard to follow, and it is difficult to keep pace with her and try to take notes. The exams are 64% of your overall grade, and she has absolutely no extra credit or curving for the course. If you can avoid this, then please do- and good luck to all that must.
This is my third stats class. I earned A's in the first two. I spend hours studying before exams and about 3 hours on each homework and Excel assignment to make sure I understand concepts. I watch all lectures for the formulas, even though they aren't helpful. The exams are poorly worded and very different from the practice problems.
This is an awful class! I would avoid at all costs. Exams are 60% and there is never enough times to take the exam. The exams are extremely difficult. She has 6 lectures a week for distance and she is very hard to follow.
This class is made to set you up for failure. The only possible way you will do well is if you took AP Stats in high school. Fill-in-the-blank notes for a stem class is a total joke. Her practice quizzes are 138 questions long and somehow dont relate to the test in the slightest. Worst teacher ever who doesnt curve F's btw. Nice person tho.
WHY IS THERE A NEW METHOD FOR FINDING Q3. WHO CHANGES IT.
Terrible professor
Avoid this classs at all costs
Class structure is horrible and she makes it so much worse. One problem a week does not help you learn anything.
Actually the worst class ever, run please
It's wild that she's the only prof teaching this course... would rate a 0/5 if possible. Just like everyone else said run. but fr. do it.
Inhumane towards students
No care for students learning, just posts lecturers and expects the worst of students
She is the most non-understanding professor I've had, for example, I lost ALL of my notes for all of my classes, and after I told her the situation I was in, in a snarky, fake-friendly, way, she was hardstuck on a no. I don't like to rant, but it seems like she wants you to "slip up". My genuine, best way to describe her as a professor is a Karen.
I feel like she taught in just about the most confusing manner. I never went to lecture past the first day and I've preformed well on the 2 exams so far. I watch the lectures from home and take notes. You get a note sheet for each exam. Just cram material on there and take notes and you'll be fine. A or B.
Worst professor on campus at Purdue.
Do not go to class. Learn nothing. Getting a B in this class because I taught myself the material. Not a good teacher. Kind soul but terrible teacher.
Terrible Professor. She is a nice person, but if your class average for an exam is in the 60s with no curve that tells it is not on the students. No clue how she is still teaching here without a curve. Will ruin you're GPA. DO NOT TAKE!
If you have to take this try to take the econ stat class instead with vargas. The grading is hard and very picky. and cant teach. also it will be the end of the semester and they will start changing your grades for excel activities after the already graded them TA's "help" on ea activities then you get a bad grade.
i have to retake it
The professor does not believe in curving the class, no matter the average. Most of the people I know have taken this course twice because they did not pass the first time, and she still does not give curve. Do not take this class!! If you take it be ready to study so much before your exams and the exams to be tougher.
Sweet lady, but a terrible teacher. The lectures drag on and don't make sense, the excel activities seem pointless, and the exams are very hard. Waiting to get my grade back but hoping to receive at least a C-. If you don't have to take this class, don't. Expect to have to study a lot for the exams.
pam is sweet but boy does this class suck. exams are 64% of your grade in total, and they are nothing like any of the review material she posts beforehand. have never gone into an exam feeling prepared. no clue why recitations are excel based when we don't use it on homework or the exams, practically an hour wasted each week. avoid if you can.
Genuinely worst experience ever.Pam needs 2 read the reviews & take constructive criticism.Tests r nothing like practice test, excels r pointless, class is not made to try and help students actually learn.Ridiculously hard tests 4 a INTRO class & the averages are horrible. She needs to seriously consider changing this class it's insane.
She should just write down to not come to lecture and read the textbook on the syllabus. Worst professor I have had by far and this is an intro class. Your guessing skills better be good because the test is nothing like what you learn in class.
Got a B instead of an A minus because I didn't submit screenshots of the end of term surveys even though I did them on time. Old grumpy and sad.
In all honesty, I don't understand the negativity. I'm not trying to invalidate anyone's opinions (she does call out individuals during exams) but I personally thought Pam was great! The lectures didn't always help me, so I stopped attending regularly, but the ones I did go to, she seemed genuinely invested in her students and cared a lot
She is a good person, and her teaching is kinda understandable. I have no stats background, but her lessons are really easy to understand, given that English is not even my first language. Attendance isn't mandatory, so I didn't come. I watched videos and asked her questions next class. She's kind, but I understand her style doesn't suit everyone.
worst professor I've had in 3 years on campus. Exams are impossible. Excel is encouraged on homework but can't be used on exams. Zero curves or extra credit even though exams average in the 60s. does 1 "practice" problem a week and acts like thats enough to learn the material. avoid at all cost.
The worst professor I have had at my time at Purdue so far. Hardest exams I have ever taken and she does not give any curves or extra credit with the exam averages in the low 60's. I am blessed to be done with this course and Pam Porterfield as a whole and move on with my degree, that was the worst academic semester of my time here.
Time to retire Pam or learn how to curve when the average exam scores are in the 60s.
This is the worst class I have ever taken period. Exams are nothing like lectures or homework and exams test more of your reading and critical thinking rather than actual Statistics. I'm blessed to never have to take this course again. So much negative feedback yet Pam refuses to change anything about her curriculum. Surprised she's employed at all
This is a very tough class that makes no sense. The excel activities and homeworks are brutal so are the exams. Since no other professor teaches this class my only advice is to take notes by hand, don't use the fill in the blank versions. Also only focus on the main review problems when creating the cheat sheet for exams.
Worse than the Colts Defense. I literally taught myself all of the material. Just watch the review videos and do the practice exam problems. That is your best chance doing well in the course.
Idek where to start with Pam Porterfield's STAT 30301 class. This class made me rethink life. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Do not be misled by her "niceness"; her exams are unnecessarily difficult. It's like she writes the exams like the practice exam problems, but jumbles up the words so you purposely don't understand what the problems are asking. GOODLUCK
Lectures are unbearably boring and do not offer any support. Tests are also extremely difficult.
She's a nice person, but she'll teach you the bare minimum when it comes to what is needed for the exam. She'll give a set of review problems, but there's no guarantee that it'll be on exam. She'll also put the most random concepts that she skips past during lecture that would make you think aren't important. All in all, good luck.
