She acted nice and told you to do one thing and then when you did it, you got a crappy mark for it. She missed a lot of lectures out of a full year course.
The only prof I've ever truly hated--she shut down a web discussion on interracial relationships in "Cherrylog Road" because the idea had never occurred to HER. I went to her office once and was crisply told that it was two minutes past her scheduled office hour. Unbelievable.
This woman is psychotic. Whined to students about her problems at the university. Wouldn't show up for class. Really bad fashion sense which made the whole thing worse.

She was awful. All over the map, extremely unclear; she ordered her textbooks through a independent bookstore, making even those unfamiliar with the city go find them elsewhere, and had us watch an interpretive dance video presumably because she was the narrator, not because it had anything to do with the course. Never again. Never.
If you are ever in a class with Dr. Banting my advice is to meet with her after class to find out exactly what she wants. If you get on her good side you will get a great mark. My friend got an A in the course after getting C's on every assignment because she had scoliosis and talked to Banting about it. Thanks fair!! NOT!
Very judgemental. Get in her good books and you will be fine. Otherwise, good luck. Also very self-centered in her curriculum choices, and required an expensive sub-par photocopy anthology in lieu of actual books that we could potentially sell to recoup some cash.
I am saddened to hear that Dr. Banting is still making students lives miserable. I took her course in 1998 and witnessed many of the same problems that I am reading here. That year, the head of the English department had to speak to our class to avert a full-on revolt by students in response to her biased and unfair marking. Not pretty. to s
Has been the worst Prof I have ever had. Even people getting good marks have complained about her as she is extremely boring and not helpful at all. If you have to take a class with her just agree with everything she says or your mark will be affected badly.
Prof did not teach the class - the students did. I wouldn't take another class with her.
Also ENGL 503 (I think?). Great teacher! Knows very well and is passionate about western Canadian literature. If you show a keen interest in the material, your marks will be fine. Regarding her use of Pages Books on Kensington for texts, why not support an independent bookstore rather than the University?? Pages is close to Sunnyside train St.
Canadian lit is made less interesting through this teachers infomercial like lectures. If you want to take a class you won't absolutely hate then avoid this prof at all costs! She is very rude and unhelpful. Got grades re-evaluated and got at least an extra letter grade or two on everything.

This professor is horrible. I think she smoked up before coming to class because her lectures were so spacey, I doubt even she knew what she was talking about. She is also a horrible marker, she chooses favorites and grades that way. Acts nice and friendly but is very rude and unhelpful and puts students down. Overall Worst professor ever.
Really helpful, clear in her expectations and grading. The assignments were good, and I still use many of the readings in the photocopy anthology as sources. As for the office hours thing: they are scheduled for a reason. Show up when they are scheduled, and not 2 mins before/after they are over. Easy-peasy, right?
You will read a lot, will be required to think a lot, and will get a whole lot in return. Be prepared to read--it's an English course, after all. Regarding the "playing favourites" business, as one of the favourites, it won't matter if you don't deliver, it won't make any difference. She's a professional.
The worst prof I had in first year. By far. Notes are non-existent, and In-class discussions are boring. When approached during office hours for clarification on a grade, she can't honestly tell you what was wrong with your paper. Comments vague and unhelpful. No structure to the course whatsoever. Impossibly hard marker. Avoid at all costs.
I no longer go to U of C, as I've transfered to UBCO. But I took a class with Pamela, and let me say, it's been 3 years and I still remember how horrible it was! Avoid!
Seemed nice but relied too much on activities instead of lecturing for my liking. It sometimes felt like she was teaching grade 7 instead of university. Virtually no constructive feedback on assignments, some comments were downright insulting and marking was unclear and hard for courselevel(I have much better grades in higherlevel english courses)
I thought the grading scheme was very tough on students. 1 mark was 1 percent, which meant you could either do very well or very poorly. I felt that exams were far too difficult and that it was nearly impossible to prepare for them. I do feel like I learned a lot from her. Just make sure you try to get as much info on the tests as possible.
She was good prof overall, and if you read the material class discussions were quite interesting. I typically don't like english classes but really enjoyed this one, which was environmental ethics. If you put the time in, and seek help whenever you need it, she will treat you well.
She was great! Don't understand what everyone is talking about here. Maybe you suck at reading and writing? Dr. Banting is very knowledgeable in the field of environmental literature, ecocriticism, and environmental issues. Her lectures/discussions were interesting and she marked fairly with helpful constructive criticism. I recommend her!
I don't understand why people don't like her. She was extremely helpful and easy to approach. Classes were very interesting and values student input in discussions.
Absolutely the worst. She changed the midterm date 3 times, ended up giving us only 1 class notice of the final date. Send an email changing the date of the project from the next week to being due the next day. Did not communicate expectations or dates of important assignments at all, even after students badgered her all class for finalized dates.
I found this class to be very easy copared to all of my other ones. If anyone is looking to take an English course who is not good at english/does not like English like myself, I would highly recommend this one. There were no essays, and no final for this class. She is VERY scatterbrained, but it is manageable for this class.
Great prof! if you read the books and show up to class you'll do great, she likes to give students good marks as long as you're engaged in the material and put some effort into the class. if you're interested in environmental literature she is a brilliant person to be teaching it to you
I was seriously considering not taking this course due to the rating and negative comments on this site. However, I'm so glad I chose to take this class anyway. This was my favourite class that I've taken over the last three years. Banting's lectures on environmental literature are particularly engaging. She offers lots of feedback on assignments.
Worst prof of my life .Has the most useless things to say about assignments and has no rationale behind the grades she gives out. Also incredibly rude when replying to emails and has an extreme lack of professional behavior when it comes to dealing with students.
Horrible teacher
Best prof ever. If you take a theory-heavy course, actually go! Make an effort (i.e. attend class) and you can do really well (A+!) Take all of the nature-related courses she offers, they are so good! I have chosen my masters based on her courses. Really wish I could keep taking classes with Dr. Banting, but I have to graduate.
Very good professor, very helpful and lectures well. Would highly recommend to anyone interested in the environment and improving their writing.
I really enjoyed this class. It was environment based, which was super interesting. She chose great booksfilms to study, and gave lots of feedback on written assignments. Tests and quizzes were very easy and straightforward.
Worst prof I've ever had. Does not back up the grades she gives out, they are essentially based on wether she likes you or not. Has absolutely no professional behaviour when dealing with students. Her lectures put 80% of the class to sleep. She has a monotone voice and does not make the class interesting. Very immature and unprofessional.
Dr Banting is a good professor. She's open to hearing ideas, likes to talk about Ecocriticism, and grades fairly. Class attendance is necessary to pass, but at times boring. Some activities seemed useless at the time, but I did enjoy the class community. She has a lot of experience with lit theory, especially PoMo & Canadian contributions.
I am fully willing to bet these reviews were written by non-English majors, doing their best to find a class they do not need to attend rather than attempting to give a fair review. If you show up to lecture, read the books, and do your work the odds are very good that you will find yourself with an excellent grade. Review your punctuation.
Dr Banting is an amazing professor and a really great person to study environmental literature under. Her grading is skewed by class participation, so ensure so show up and put in some effort (she is an easy grader for the most part). If you are looking to learn more about ecocriticism and environmental/energy literature, take a class with her!
I really enjoyed this class. As long as you attend and do the readings you will do very well.
Horrible prof, unless you really love learning about oil, gas, and aboriginal perspective with a LOT of reading, dont take this class! Tends to treat the class like a grade 7 English class but with PhD difficulty as her exam question dont relate to the work done in class.
Dr. Banting is an inspiring, open and amazing professor. I learned so much from her and her material. All the books she choose for this course were thought-provoking and poignant. Dr. Banting's 517 class was the best English class of my entire degree. Much love and respect for this brilliant woman.
Tests were easy. Go to class because she discusses books in depth and her ideas come in handy for final/midterm. Hard marker when it comes to essays, really practice punctuation and grammar. course split into assignments and tests loads of opportunities to bounce back from a bad grade. She is inspirational. find myself thinking about her ideas.
I don't know why so many people are complaining about her. The tests were a breeze, just read the books and listen to lecture. Marked a bit hard when it came to essays but just ask for help or visit SSC for extra help. Overall one of my easiest courses and the books were interesting. Just put in effort, don't be lazy. Many people did well.
Awful prof. By far the worst I've ever had. I was one of the various English majors of her class and yet she has no regard for the various writing styles of her students. Never justifies her explanations for grades, let alone her thinking surrounding lectures. Never know what she wants/talking about. Awful, would never, EVER recommend.
Lectures drag on, she loses focus in class and not to mention, a terrible person. She picks favorites and never gives her students a chance to redeem themselves. Not optimistic and shuts down kids to make them feel unworthy or stupid. Would not recommend nor take again.
Banting takes too much of the class time to go off on tangents that don't even help with the course. She is passionate about what she teaches but her teaching standards and what she expects from her students isn't clear. focusing on 6 different books every two weeks was hectic and it didn't give us the chance to connect with any of the novel.
Pamela was so entertaining I rearranged my schedule for next semester to take another course with her! She chooses texts that are entertaining and genuinely cares about what she's talking about. She gets so excited sometimes that it's adorable.
Also not sure why people are complaining. She is SO inspiring and clear in her lectures. Do the readings, put in some thought, go to class and participate in discussions, and the quizzes/journal entries were a BREEZE. She is very approachable. Not to mention, the TOPIC of the course is extremely relevant to the world today.
This course was a bit of a step up from her Engl 309 class with more assignments/essays, as opposed to ponderous journal entries and short quizzes in 309, but still VERY enjoyable and worth taking. The 'research-creation project' also allowed a LOT of room for individual strengths of students to shine! Such a great prof!
This professor is one of the most unprofessional teachers Ive ever met. Her assignments are weighted way to high and were far to many for any English course and thats coming from an English major. During the COVID-19 pandemic she not only ridiculed the students over email that they might die too, she ADDED to our already crazy workload. Beware.
Great prof! Wish she gave more feedback on assignments. I'm an Engl major and found she marks super easy. She cares and listens to her students above all. Not sure why someone said she added to our workload during COVID for this class -- everything still followed the course outline exactly. Heavy weighted (40%) final assignment but was marked easy!
Thankfully she is an easy grader because marking criteria is quite vague. Gets a 2 because she doesn't require lecture attendance. I recommend reading the texts in advance of the semester and just working through the journals by yourself. No need to go to class
Passionate about environmental literature, and her enthusiasm is infectious. Show up to class, contribute to discussions, and carefully plan your assignments. She is not an easy marker, but will actively help you succeed if you engage with the material. She was very accomodating during COVID, not sure where the complaint below is coming from.
Easily one of the worst professors I've ever encountered. Marking criteria was extremely unclear, and did not give useful feedback. Cares more about minor grammatical errors, as opposed to actual content. Lectures heavy, and quite frankly a condescending and direspectful professor.
In my discourse with Dr. Banting, she has regularly ignored my requests for clarifications and graded me outside of the course documents. She unfairly grades people on petty reasons and does not explain how she graded it. When asked to clarify or how she graded she deflects. This is single-handedly the worst professor I've ever had in my life.
I enjoyed Banting and did well in her course. But I do agree with those that have stated her assignments are very unclear. I enjoyed the class but was very stressed just trying to figure out what she wants in assignments. She's a little too open-ended with assignments, and often her email clarifications don't help. Find a friend to bounce ideas off
Dr. Banting is a nice professor who is very passionate about the topics we are studying. However, her assignments are unclear and when you ask her to clarify what she expects from you the response is vague. She is quite condescending and as mentioned with other students I found that she is an unfair marker who does not give useful feedback.
Best thing about Dr. Banting's class is that you'll come across some great readings. However, as a person, Dr. Banting is condescending, disrespectful and her emails are extremely unprofessional. It's too bad that she has tenure as her ridiculing of students seems to be a reoccurring theme with her.
Do you like trees? I hope so, because Dr. Banting really wants you to like trees. She wants you to LOVE trees. Personally, I found the assigned readings for environmental lit a little dry, so I supplemented them with other books in the field that were more interesting to me. She always respected that and graded me kindly. (I like trees.)
Banting is the worst professor I have had, she is condescending, entitled and extremely unprofessional. She refuses to give clear assignment parameters and belittles people for asking questions: she has even made fun of us on twitter. She has time and time again proved that she is not qualified or interested enough to teach.
Great Professor. Interesting subject. No textbooks, but quite a few scholarly articles to read and a handful of non fiction texts to read along the way. I found them all to be very interesting. Psychogeography was the subject of this class. Speak up. Participate in the readings and the lectures, and you'll do fine.
Pamela Banting is a great prof. I learned a lot in her course. She is not an easy prof but if you work hard you can get a good grade. She is knowledgeable and passionate about what she teaches. Her tests are very hard though. But all in all I enjoyed her class a lot.
Banting's class has been my least favorite I've ever taken by a large margin. Her grading criteria is extremely unclear, and obviously bias. For feedback on an OPINOIN piece I did she wrote; I disagree with your perspective. Furthermore her lectures hold very little substance, and her assignments are often unclear and general.
Feedback from Dr. Banting: "You seem to have such a cynical outlook, [Student]...It seems you are reading from a cynical standpoint and it is causing you to create very serious distortions in your interpretations... I hope you can recover from the indoctrination you have received in previous courses." (Banting, 2023). She punishes critical thought
Taken alot of ENGL classes but this was probably the worst. Despite an interesting class topic lectures were boring, with Banting just recommending non assigned books for like half the time. Midterm was extremely hard and there was no clear rubric for assignments. Also assigned 2pgs of writing every week which became quite the drain to do.
I am extremely dissatisfied with the education provided by Dr. Banting.
This Professor is probably the most unprofessional lady I have ever met. Her demeanor is very unprofessional, her grading scheme is ambiguous and refuses to provide more direct feedback, and is accusatory. Often times, she spends her times on her twitter ranting about how bad we are as students, poor participation, discloses private health matters
I hope she reads this review. she is the worst prof ever.lectures were boring, and she had no review for tests. She needs to treat students with respect. Ive emailed her multiple times for guidance but she doesnt respond. Very unprofessional. Her feedback is rude, and unhelpful. doesnt provide corrections, dont expect to learn anything in the class.
Banting is passive-aggressive and sometimes mean to her students. She will lecture the class about what we did, yet provide unclear guidelines on how to improve. If you disagree with her opinions on the course material be prepared for a low grade and a response which is unprofessional at best, and derogatory at worst. Don't take her classes.
Please do not take a class with her. She is extremely passive-aggressive and rude. Her guidelines were unclear, and the feedback was useless. Even if it is a mandatory class (like in my case), I suggest finding another prof.
Dr. Banting is extremely kind, caring and went out of her way to ensure students were prepared for tests, projects and assignments. We read a wide variety of interesting texts and the class discussions were excellent. She encourages students to take their learning outside of the class and challenges the way we conceive of and engage with nature!
Really unreceptive to challenges to her knowledge. She literally didn't know what parkour's (the topic she brought up) original philosophy was intended to be. Too immersed in her readings and field of specialization to understand different perspectives. I think she expects regurgitation. One of the main reasons I changed my degree.
EXTREMELY rude, entitled, and stuck up. If you do something she doesn't like then best believe she's gonna let you and the whole class know. Some poor girl was coughing, and she sent out a email calling her out and even went so far as to make a tweet about it. 100% would not recommend taking this class if you want a good prof.
Doesn't treat her students very well imo. Very condescending towards us, not very helpful, and overall someone you don't wanna be around. Why she would get a teaching job is beyond me, maybe a job where you don't have to talk to others would be better suited for her
Probably gonna tweet about this as well, but Pamela is extremely unprofessional. The way she acts and conducts herself is unbecoming of someone in a teaching profession. She makes coming to class something to dread rather than something to look forward to. Even as someone who loves to learn, Pamela makes that a dreadful experience
Spends all day on twitter and comes off like someone who does. Just one of the most draining person to hear speak. As a teacher, she won't offer you clear ways to improve, just criticism as she sees fit. She acts like she is the smartest person in the world. Granted, she is probably the smartest in the room, yet she acts so smug and arrogant. Avoid
Just as a person, Banting is not a pleasant person. Very passive aggressive, rude, and overall a bad person to be around. You can see for yourself what she thinks about students, just go onto her X account and search up "student" or "class". Frankly, its appalling how someone like a prof feels the need to air out dirty laundry like that
More chronically on Twitter than most other people I know. And that's bad when she's so rude and miserable cuz it's such an easy fix but twitter is her source for life so you know she's never gonna change
Banting is not a professor you want if you are starting an English degree. All her classes center around her PhD focus, which would be valid in a specialized class; it is not here. She spends most lectures talking about other texts NOT assigned to students. Very convoluted way of teaching.
RUN FOR YOUR LIFE. STAY AWAY I BEG YOU.
Don't take classes with her. Trust the reviews. Genuinely the worst prof. I have ever had. She'll make you question why you even signed up to be at uni.
A hard class
Pamela Banting is such a confusing teacher, she brings up other authors because SHE likes them, they dont have any relevance to the course itself. Her 203 INTRO class was not an intro class, it was very specific to her taste. she harassed a girl in the first two weeks causing her to drop. she will post about you on X before responding to an email.
Banting is the worst education provider I've had in my entire school career. As a first year in an introductory course, I was extremely discouraged. Her lectures are irrelevant and she provides no expectations or useful feedback for assignments. She does not respect students and will out you in class or post about you on twitter. Horrible.
Passionate but very condescending, passive agressive and slightly self absorbent. Doesn't use/post rubrics and is picky with writing. Lectures aren't about text, but other authors or political matters and her opinions. Posts on X about your email rather than responding to it. You"ll live if she is the only option, but I'd would advise against it.
She is insufferable. Her knowledge and way of teaching suits the masters classes she fawns over, not a mandatory intro English course. Guys I'm so fr do not take this class unless you have to. The sound of her rolling bag haunt my dreams. No rubrics, no useful feedback, when asked for clarification she only says "it's really quite simple"
Lectures composed of the prof rambling about things she likes, rather than the subject matter of any of the highly specific and specialized books… the class seemed very overly focused for an intro class, and lectures were completely irrelevant until she drops the most random pieces of grammar information (of course on the final). Don't take!
Her lectures were genuinely bizarre. I never once knew what she was yapping about. Did well because I shoehorned environmentalist talking points into everything I wrote and pretended to agree with her wholly. I played solitaire through every lecture.
Avoid this prof at all costs! She is TERRIBLE at responding to emails and is super uncommunicative. Says she doesn't but DEFINITELY grades with how much she likes you in mind. If you have differing opinions to her she will also grade you harder.
The large workload and massive amounts of reading could be forgiven if the professor was less snarky and vindictive. If you're an English major and have to take her course, put your head down and you'll survive. If you're not, avoid at all costs.
This course made me rethink my choices of my degree.... I have never ended with a grade SO awful. For future reference. I will not be taking a course with this prof, even if my life depended on it. No Thanks
