Professor Brown is TOTALLY brilliant, by far the best I've had at NYU. She's extremely passionate about the subjet and stops to answer every question; she really makes you think too. I changed my major because of her class. Essays and tests are not at all hard if you do the work. She explains everything very clearly; highly recommended.
Class is extremely boring, she's very disengaged, doesn't ask questions -- literally walked into class on the first day and didn't say a single word, and just started writing the historical background of Plato on the board. She plays favorites when she grades. Whenever asked a question, she says "that's a good question" but doesn't answer it.
Her classes are for people who actually want to learn something. Unlike other GSP classes, they are real, quality college courses. The subject matter is difficult, but she is highly prepared, extremely knowledgeable, and explains everything clearly. Also, she hears everyone out and encourages different interpretations. Great teacher!!
I couldn't disagree more with the last person, who obviously missed the first day of class when we did the Yeats poem about No Country For Old Men. She obviously cares about all of her students and wants everyone to do well. Her comments on my essays really helped me to improve as a writer. She's got great energy & answers all questions thoroughly.

Great Professor! Highly recommended! You will learn 100 times more than you will in any other GSP class. Not a class you can slide by without effort though. Gives crystal clear explanations and is very encouraging. You don't really have to do the reading because she goes over everything. Just pay attention to quotes she mentions!

It's not difficult to do well in her class as long as you do the readings, she does give pretty decent notes, but she plays favorites and her class is uninteresting. SF is a topic that should have engaging class discussions, and there were NONE, she was boring & uninspiring, rarely encouraged participation, and never applied topics to the real wold
Her class is hard core philosophy, not current events, and she says that up front. If you came to college to be babied, it's not for you. Her standards are high and you get out what you put in, no way she plays favorites. She's super smart, super encouraging, and inspires you to work to your fullest potential. A real, quality, learning experience.
Quality all the way. She's fierce, fabulous & flawless. She knows everything, encourages everyone, makes you think without imposing her own agenda. You will learn a TON. Highly recommended!
Thought I would hate her because the books are impossible to understand. By the end though, I learned more in her class than any other GSP course. She explains everything excellently and if you take good notes, you will do fine. I stopped reading the books after three weeks because you don't really have to. Overall, great teacher, learned a lot.
I liked her so much for SF1 that I signed up for SF2 as well. She can seem a bit intimidating at first, but if you ask for it, she gives great advice for papers. The classes are about 1/2 lecture, 1/2 discussion & the books are very challenging, but I definitely ended up a stronger overall student. I'd take her again in a hearbeat! Great professor!
Comes across as intimidating at first and takes a very professional approach to philosophy. Easily one of the best professors in the department. You will learn the information, and you will end up enjoying it. Don't get discouraged when/if you bomb the first paper. She gives really helpful information to make you a better critical writer. Take her!
I am starting to believe that this teacher is writing her own ratings. She is easily the worst professor at NYU. Not only does she know NOTHING more than the book, she refuses to interpret things any way other than her own. If you want to be fed a semester of nonsense that leaves you with no knowledge, take her.
Explanation of philosophers' theories is impeccable. Knows what she's talking about, is passionate about the subject. But, class can get a little dull and repetitve. Tough grader. Your grade consists of 3 papers, 2 exams, and weekly participation on an online forum. If you want to be challenged intellectually, take her. If you want an easy A, don't
I absolutely deplored this class! Her grading is tough and well, rediculous. The essays were unimaginably hard. Plus, you have to write 200-500 word discussion boards each week. The class itself was boring. I looked at the clock every five minutes. She speaks so fast that I couldn't write all the things I wanted despite using my shorthand.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. SHE WILL KILL YOUR GPA. She's extremely close minded, opinionated, and subjective. Assignments are ridiculously long and its impossible to catch up on the work in that class. Grades are nowhere near fair and she bases participation grades on what you get on your essay. WORST PROF YET.
I am a better student after having taken her class. Yeah, it's difficult. Yeah, you have to earn your grade. If you want to sleep through the semester and get an A, she's not the prof for you, but if you want a highly rewarding educational experience, she's the best! Learned a TON.
Her class was really challenging but I learned more from her than any other teacher this semester. She tells you exactly what she wants and encourages you to go further in your thought process. The homework is a bit challenging (lots of readings) but come prepared to class and say some interesting things and she'll love you.
Worst professor Ive had this year. Class is boring, her grasp of the subject is sub-par (but she pretends to understand it), and most of the time she just wants to relate subjects to how they affect women. Maybe she was a good SF1 teacher like these reviews say, but as a CF1 professor, Im dissappointed.
Worst teacher I have had. She is close minded, hard to understand, assigns essays that make no sense, but she thinks she is brilliant. Her class was so boring I would look at the clock every 5 minutes. She applies every topic specifically to how women are portrayed (this is not a women's studies class!). I have nothing good to say about her.
Extremely boring lectures, pretty difficult exams, and a hard essay grader. She's extremely intimidating at first, but honestly she's just there to teach. She's by no means easy, and pretty closed minded, but by the end of the class don't be surprised if you're a better reader and writer.
I took her for two semesters because I wanted to challenge myself and honestly, it's the best decision I ever made. HUGE payoff if you do the work. She pushes your critical thinking and makes you look at texts in completely new ways. I'm a much stronger reader and writer entirely thanks to her. My most rewarding educational experience so far!
Who are the crazy misogynists who say she only talks about women? When does a male professor even get accused of talking about men? She has no agenda. None. All the "intimidating" stuff is crap too. She's just wicked smart, and isn't that what you want? Take her!!
Pamela Brown is a brilliant teacher. Her class is extremely well organized and structured, and she presents the material in a clear fashion. This is definitely a hard class - you have to put in a few nights of studying for the midterm/final - but it ultimately worth it. If you want to get your money's worth at NYU, take Dr. Brown.
she plays favorites and definitely has a few students that she dislikes (she makes this quite obvious). she's pretentious. her pov is apparently the only right pov in a PHILOSOPHY course-mind you it doesn't make sense. she will also make mistakes in your grading and refuse to fix them to give you a better score. worst professor. not worth it AT ALL
She's challenging but she's actually my favorite teacher. She's a bit intimidating and she WILL call on you in class so don't fall asleep. Her discussions are actually pretty cool.. I hate history and she made the class interesting.. She has this really annoying discussion board homework every weekend but eventually you can just give up and BS
I wish that Pam Brown were teaching again this semester. She has made NYU worth every penny. She presents the material very clearly and will improve your analytic thinking skills drastically. An A is difficult, not impossible. **Write down the passages you discuss in class. This will be very helpful. Great professor. Worth it.
She's really arrogant and if you believe anything other than what she tells you in class she'll say that you're wrong. Topics are boring and all she does is lecture. If you answer questions she'll love you and probably give you better grades. Overall class is terrible and you should avoid her at all costs.
The reviews that say she tells you exactly what she wants are spot on. The only problem is what she wants is impossible. I worked incredibly hard and tried my very best to get a good grade, but I was never able to achieve the level of work that she was looking for. She made me feel stupid in class. She is very condescending, and talks WAY too fast.
Dont take Professor Brown if youre looking for an easy 4 credits. Do take her if you're willing to apply yourself and grow from the class experience. Very well-versed and passionate about the class material. Demanding grader on written assignments but very fair, always giving plenty of thoughtful feedback. Very willing to help. Highly recommended.
She is generally well-prepared and helpful in your analytic thinking, but you have to try so hard to get an A- or A, which I think is not necessary for people who do not pursue this major. TRY SO HARD EVEN NOT TO GET AN A CLASS.
Professor Brown was truly an awful professor, her classes were uninteresting and uninspired and she managed to make interesting material extremely tedious. She grades extremely harshly and does not make her grading policies clear whatsoever and makes NO attempt to help her students, inside or outside of class. Avoid this woman at all costs.
She is truly an amazing prof. I am DEFINITELY taking her again next semester. She is difficult, but for what you get from this class, the stress is so worth it. She is willing to help you understand the material. She is very passionate about the class. She gets so excited when students participate in class. Best Professor ever!
I learned a lot from Professor Brown. She doesn't give much freedom in terms of interpretation of the text, but she does map out exactly what she wants you to take from it during class discussion, which is extremely helpful when writing papers and taking the exams. Go to her one on one conferences, you will learn a lot! I'm taking her again.
Brown is not the prof. for anyone who likes to have their own opinions. She will shoot your ideas down. One disagreement leaves you on her bad side all semester. Never clear, pretty boring, impossible exams and abstract paper prompts. Not very open to helping either. Just did not get much out of this class.
I personally didn't enjoy the style of this class. If you prefer to receive one interpretation of a text and have more of a "math brain" you will probably do well. Definitely take advantage of the office hours because she will tell you exactly what to fix in your paper. Not warm and cuddly, but cares about students.
Not an easy A, avoid if you're lazy. Take down all the passages she points out in the book. You have to adapt quickly and ask questions about how she wants her essay because she has a specific style. She KNOWS her philosophy inside and out - brilliant woman. Overall I respect her, I learned a LOT, and I'm glad I took her.
I got an A -its not impossible but you need to pay attention and participate. She will help you and clarify ANYTHING if you ask. Midterm and Final not that bad - study but clarify that weird essay part. Take good notes, make sure you understand the books and her specific passages. She cares in a tough love way and if you care - you will learn.
Somewhat of a tough grader, but if you put in the effort you will most definitely be rewarded. Best professor I've had in LSP, really made me want to do well. Only 2 short papers, one longer (5-6) as a final paper. Midterm and final are fine if you put enough effort into studying/stay on board in class. Definitely take her if you get the chance.
She is a tough grader with very specific requirements for papers. The class requires a lot of writing. She is very organized and intelligent and presents ideas so that they are interesting and easy to grasp. She helps a lot when you ask her for help. A lot of work, though.
Pamela Brown takes this class way too seriously. She is a nice woman, when you get to know her, but she comes across very cold. She grades very harshly, even though I obviously tried extremely hard and I am a talented writer. I put way too much effort into this class than should have been necessary. Her "star" system for good writing is absurd.
Comes across very cold, isn't very engaging, grades too harshly. Takes herself and this class way too seriously.
Unengaged, very "I'm right you're wrong", too strict and takes herself too seriously. You're only allowed to have 2 absences, and the class itself is boring (coming from someone who loved SF I) and you don't learn very much.
She is a very intelligent woman who knows her stuff and succeeds in making everything clear for students to understand, but she is one of the harshest graders I've ever had. 20 verbatim paragraph-long definitions required for midterm and final, and only worth 15% of the whole test. Kills us on grading essays, her idea of "good writing" is ridiculou
She is an extremely tough grader, and her expectations of good writing were very hard for me to understand and carry out in my essays. She is pretty arrogant when she talks to you, and is very firm in her own beliefs, and is not open to other beliefs. Weekly blogs count towards participation. Absolutely avoid her if you want an easy class.
Literally the worst professor I've ever had. She is entirely uninspirational and boring. Get ready to literally memorize entire paragraphs and write the dullest, most obvious essays possible. I love reading and writing and even for me she made every book completely tiresome. Do not take her, please. She will ruin good literature for you.
Professor Brown is amazing! She's tough but that Really motivated me to do my best in her class. I can say that of all my professors this semester, I got the most out of her. She really wants the best for her students. Especially when it comes to writing. Definitely not a class you can easily bs. An A is doable but it will take hard work.
A very intelligent professor, but has no room for others' opinions, which makes her appear stuck up and condescending. The material is fairly easy but Prof. Brown manages to complicate it deliberately, and makes students believe that the class is hard and their low grades are fair. An acceptable professor, but doesn't suit NYU at all.
Worst prof i've ever had
Professor Brown is one of the most boring professors I've had so far, her lectures drag on. Also, the topics for her essays are insanely intricate and require you to read the prompt at least 15 times to even get some kind of understanding on what its asking. That being said, her exams are easy she gives you pretty much the entire test beforehand.
Prof Brown was the best professor I've had at NYU. She really cares about her students and is very helpful in everything. Her lectures are amazing and she is very knowledgeable. When compared to the other profs I've taken who just waste time in class doing meaningless discussions she actually teaches A LOT. Take her if you actually want to learn!
I struggled to stay awake every single class, and I wasn't the only one. Students barely understood what she was teaching. The work wasn't too bad if you pay attention, but that's the hard part. Didn't understand that we aren't advanced philosophy students (if you are, you'll do well) and were just taking this because it was required.
Tests are based on very specific parts of the lecture, make sure to study definitions ahead of time.
Number one piece of advice for this class is to ask for help! She's super happy to tell you what she wants and will let you know if you're on the right track. Her desired writing style is hard to get used to, and she can be a tough grader, but if you try hard you will do pretty well. Her lectures are info heavy and very interesting.
Ridiculous. you will put the most effort into this class to get the worst grade.
Horrible teacher. Every class is identical, she gets in front of the class and just reads the book. I didn't learn anything in this class, and was constantly frustrated with how much of a waste a time the class was. Also, she grades on whether she likes you or not. On her midterm and final you are required to memorize word for word paragraphs.
Pamela Brown is a very disengaging professor. Not only does she lecture in a monotonous tone, but her expectations are also ridiculous. She holds a very high standard for your assignments, and if you deviate slightly from her guidelines, you will be marked down.
She clearly cares about the subject, which is the only positive I saw with her. I never do reviews on this but she was so bad I felt I had an obligation. She expects yuo to follow her guidelines for writing essays, deviate in the slightest and you earn yourself an F. This would sound fine if her guidelines weren't ridiculous.
Her midterm did not make sense and she would take points off for things if you did not do it EXACTLY as she wanted. Not open to different ideas and ways of thinking other than her own. Her examples of "good writing" are subpar. If you use class notes she tells you not to/ penalizes you. But then its like why am i coming to class then?
Her grading expectations are unclear. For the midterms and finals, you better memorize EVERYTHING to the T, or it's OVER for you :(. Not very open-minded to other ways of thinking but her own. Worst professor I have ever had. Would not recommend taking. I only took her because no one else was available. Good luck! You'll need it :(
Horribly monotonous and boring--no clear grading criteria whatsoever. An extremely closed-minded professor who will branch off into pop culture tangents constantly and expects you to memorize passages and lengthy definitions verbatim for the midterm/final. Would rather switch majors than take this class again.
Incredibly boring lectures, complete with zero student interaction and unclear grading. Uses very obscure grading scale. Nearly all of the midterm and final was definitions. Seems very kind, but is ruthless when it comes to grading. I would definitely recommend that you, at all costs, do not take this class. Your choice - choose wisely.
Terrible professor with even worse grading. The course allows for no improvement even if there's a drastic change in writing. Extremely boring lectures, with some expecting you to read a whole book in between classes. Worst professor I've had at NYU.
Everything felt like busywork. She would also take a while to return papers, to the point where she assigned a paper before returning our last paper. I also never really understood the content because she never really *taught* it to us. We would just read on our own and do the work, and I felt lost in her class often.
She piled so much work on us. I dont recommend that anyone whos having a hard time adjusting to online classes to take her. Shes very boring although sometimes nice. But I dont take a class because a professor can be nice sometimes. Shes very unclear on what she wants and usually favors the same 5 students.
Gives really good in depth feedback. She typed up two pages of feedback for each paper I handed in, and allows a rewrite for one paper she gives feedback on. Her preferred style of writing is a bit tough to get used to, but once you do this it's smooth sailing.
This is the second semester Im taking her (my own mistake) and shes somehow gotten worse. Shes really nice and endearing but the class will make you want to bleed out your ears. She drones on and on answering just one of her homework question. Shes very close-minded and has a very specific rubric (which she doesnt blatantly tell you about).
I would've switched professors if I could, but when I tried to do that all the other classes were full. Just don't take her, she's terrible
This by far has to be one of the worst classes I've taken in my entire life. Take her if you want to deal with the most uncreative, redundant class ever. You will do 4 different long assignments weekly, read practically 100 pages every week, write 3 papers about the same 4 books, and sit through the most boring lecture known to man. Good luck.
I promise you you don't want to take a class with her. She is such a nice person but this is literally the worst class experience I have ever had. SO much work, at least 5x what my other classes were, if you like writing you can't write the way you want to, HARD grader & takes SO long to return papers. Do yourself a favor & don't take the class.
This class is a lot of work, and can be a bit overwhelming at times, but I really feel like I got a lot out of it.
This class is what made me think about majoring in philosophy. It is a ton of work, some of which is completely unnecessary but it's caused a massive improvement in my critical thinking and writing skills. I hated it the whole time but if I had the option to go back in time and change professors, I would stick with Pamela.
She is the absolute worst Professor/teacher/anyone regarding academics Ive seen. Her class is extremely boring and there is soooo much work. She is an incredibly harsh grader and expects so much. Please dont take her if you plan to have a life outside academics. Worst decision ever!!!
A lot of work and very tough harder. If you have an option to not take her then don't.
Tough grader. If you're having trouble, don't bother asking for help as she will just tell you to "pay more attention". If your learning style is to listen to long unamusing lectures then chose her class! I show up, listen, and take notes but it's difficult to be a critical thinker that's good enough for her.
She's a very tough grader, only 40% of the class received a B or above for the final grade. Her lectures can be long, and the content is very confusing. If you cram on your papers or exams, don't expect an A. But she's still a very good teacher, her feedback is a little tough, but it's honest. And her exams are very simple and straight forward.
I took her class both fall and spring semester, and though her assigned readings SUCK and she grades papers harshly: she made me a better writer and student. Her class may have been boring and lecture heavy, but she really teaches you how. to. write. which is what matters most in the end. Overall? A solid C class, very deeply average
Good professor; she knows her craft and explains the content well. Her class is also direct and straightforward, a very basic system, which you will see. Her lectures are long, she's a tough grader, and the content is grueling. But she does make you a better writer and student overall. Out of all the classes, I remember her content the most.
As a math major student, I would say her way of structuring the class is a solidly effective way for me to really learn something from this art subject and to improve on writing. So even if it's super exhausting with many uneasy writing assignments, I like her straightforward and writing-heavy class. And she is smart, caring, and patient.
Really hard. She has clear favorites and is harsh grader. She also reads grades of aloud. For our midterm, she told us who got the highest scores and did well. She also has discussion posts where she tells the class which students did the best (got a star which is an A), and the students who got second best (half-star which is an A-). Good luck
Very pleasant personality and nice sense of humor. She makes it clear what she wants and if u match that you will do well. Long/somewhat boring lectures but if ur into philosophy then go for it, she is really knowledgeable. Great help w office hours. There are a lot of readings but you don't have to keep up with them weekly (check in for exams tho)
Prof Brown assigns dense readings (and a lot of them). This class is passable as long as you keep up with the readings, pay attention during lectures, and participate regularly. She vocalizes what she wants from you, and if you do this, you will get the A. All this to say, Prof Brown sparked my interest in philosophy and encouraged me to do my best
Reads grades out loud once a week- only prefers one style of writing, accuses everyone else of plagiarism. Required to read eight full books, midterm + final require word for word memorization of definitions. Does not tell you rubric for papers until after grading the first paper- chooses five favorites per class. Do not bother with her class.
Accessible- but gives everyone the same advice- 70% of students get a B- or below. She has clear favorites chosen the first day of class. I transferred in, could not transfer out- grading is dependent on how much you show you agree with her opinion that she doesn't let you know until after handing back papers. Really not worth it- does not teach.
Does not convey material clearly- asks students to practically teach the class then adds on if there is time left during the class. Never specifies a grading rubric for papers- reads all grades out loud- accuses students who think differently than her of plagiarism. Has no evidence of this plagiarism when asked to present by advisor. do not take
Does Not Teach- you have to read hundreds of pages every time before class and answer discussion posts weekly as well as answering study questions due prior to the teaching of any texts. Honestly a waste of time and an easy way to lower your GPA no matter how much you try
She gives no guidance on the first paper but still grades it very hard. Even though she allows rewrites, she doesnt give much feedback on the essays. She also gives study questions for each reading which take very long to complete on top of the actual readings. Her exams are manageable if you study well.
Very tough grader. Does not make requirements and criteria clear enough. Unhelpful feedback focused on minor errors. The amount of reading is average for the type of class. Bad at explaining concepts and does not know how to teach. Knowledgeable but overcomplicates ideas for students. Do not take her: very low effort to grade ratio.
My first review goes out to this terrible professor. Everything she talks about is nonsense. Her grading is terribly hard and she takes off points for the most specific things. She wants you to quote everything, which leaves no room for the real arguing or analyzing. I have never had a worse professor. This class is honestly harder than orgo.
You can tell that she is super well-educated in her field however, the class is nonsense. Her grading criteria are super unclear and when you finally receive feedback after the first essay and midterm, it is extremely specific and focused on minor details. She offers a rewrite but yeah I wouldn't recommend you take her at all if you can avoid her.
Genuinely don't take. She's not a bad person but omg her lectures are so boring and confusing. All she does is talk the entire class, just reading off a book. And then you are also required to participate, even when you don't know what actually going on. SO MUCH WORK!! Inordinate amounts of Hw, papers, tests, memorization, etc. SO STRESSFUL!
RUNNN!! She's terrible. Aggressive and unhelpful. Reads off book monotone, so boring!! Gave plagarism and F for not citing source when its purely my own analysis of quotes from the right book. Heavy on picks favourites! Harsh harsh grader + SOO MUCH WORK. Hw, tests, papers, forums, etc. Gave work due over thanksgiving and doesn't care abt students.
Don't let her laidback persona fool you, she's very rude & doesn't care about students' problems. Thought she was kind enough to meet w/ me but during said meeting, she kept cutting me off & was so rude though I was being respectful. Also her classes can be boring/rarely make sense. Gave work on a holiday. I left the class feeling so worthless.....
I am begging you to avoid this professor at all costs. She grades so harshly on extremely minor details but does not employ a clear grading scheme or have a rubric to reference. There is an excessive amount of reading and a lot of homework. Honestly an extremely difficult class no matter how much you try so avoid unless you want to lower your GPA.
Professor Brown is a great professor who clearly shows an extensive understanding of the field she teaches. However, her classes and exams are in my opinion, unbearable. Her midterm and final exams are pointless. She will ask you to remember 15 terms and definition verbatim that everyone is going to forget when the test ends. Is this rlly learning?
I think she's writing her own good reviews? This prof was rly bad. She's doesnt care to listen to her students. She doesn't really make class criteria well known, or at least online she didn't. She also can't really grade. Anything you write that won't get accepted to a literary journal wont get a B in her class.
Brown is a very knowledgeable teacher, and because of that, she tends to overcomplicate classes and ramble about unimportant topics. She writes her notes in shorthand, so some of her lectures make no sense. You're reading 100-150 pages weekly and writing discussions, just mini essays every Sunday. A lot of work!
This professors class may be harder to get an A in than in any other course at NYU. I am not joking. Take at your own risk as she does not seem to understand what is considered standard in grading criteria. She does know what she is talking about (generally) but drones on in class a lot so it can be hard. Her papers will not help you in the future.
You will have to relearn your writing style for this class and also be able to memorize a lot. After that the class becomes much more manageable, and you can learn about philosophy. So, for students who want to learn about philosophy (but don't need an A, such as if a prelaw student) consider taking this class.
The class is extremely difficult with readings and study questions, papers are difficult to get right, exams require a lot of memorization of 15 long definitions, BUT I can't lie: I definitely learned so much in this class. Prof. Brown does a great job making sure that ideas are critically deciphered through discussion. I personally enjoyed it!
She is very knowledgeable and you will do well if you have a genuine passion for literature– her classes are very literature-heavy and entail a lot of close reading on texts. She is very particular with the definition part of the midterm so you have to include almost verbatim all the long definitions.
worst professor ive ever experienced in my life. I am a science and humanities major and have never encountered a professor quite like this. withdrew because I liked my gpa, took the same class with a professor who assigned exams, pop quizzes, and essays and got an A. she's the problem. she got suspended for a sem bc of how many ppl failed
Pamela Brown is a bad Professor. I am unsure how she managed to get a PHD. She has bad grammar and a bad understanding of topics. She presents false ideas, lectures excessively, and bases 40% of the test grade on memorizing poorly written, inaccurate definitions. DO NOT TAKE. I did not learn anything.
